RESUMEN
This paper reports the synthesis, characterization and inâ vivo application of water-soluble supramolecular contrast agents (Mw: 5-5.6â kDa) for MRI obtained from ß-cyclodextrin functionalized with different kinds of nitroxide radicals, both with piperidine structure (CD2 and CD3) and with pyrrolidine structure (CD4 and CD5). As to the stability of the radicals in presence of ascorbic acid, CD4 and CD5 have low second order kinetic constants (≤0.05â M-1 s-1 ) compared to CD2 (3.5â M-1 s-1 ) and CD3 (0.73â M-1 s-1 ). Relaxivity (r1 ) measurements on compounds CD3-CD5 were carried out at different magnetic field strength (0.7, 3, 7 and 9.4 T). At 0.7â T, r1 values comprised between 1.5â mM-1 s-1 and 1.9â mM-1 s-1 were found while a significant reduction was observed at higher fields (r1 ≈0.6-0.9â mM-1 s-1 at 9.4 T). Tests inâ vitro on HEK293 human embryonic kidney cells, L929 mouse fibroblasts and U87 glioblastoma cells indicated that all compounds were non-cytotoxic at concentrations below 1â µmol mL-1 . MRI inâ vivo was carried out at 9.4â T on glioma-bearing rats using the compounds CD3-CD5. The experiments showed a good lowering of T1 relaxation in tumor with a retention of the contrast for at least 60 mins confirming improved stability also inâ vivo conditions.

The biologically triggered reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ has been postulated as a possible in vivo decomplexation pathway in 64/67Cu-based radiopharmaceuticals. In an attempt to hinder this phenomenon, we have previously developed a family of S-containing polyazamacrocycles based on 12-, 13-, or 14-membered tetraaza rings able to stabilize both oxidation states. However, despite the high thermodynamic stability of the resulting Cu2+/+ complexes, a marked [64Cu]Cu2+ release was detected in human serum, likely as a result of the partially saturated coordination sphere around the copper center. In the present work, a new hexadentate macrocyclic ligand, 1,4,7-tris[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl)]-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (NO3S), was synthesized by hypothesizing that a smaller macrocyclic backbone could thwart the observed demetalation by fully encapsulating the copper ion. To unveil the role of the S donors in the metal binding, the corresponding alkyl analogue 1,4,7-tris-n-butyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (TACN-n-Bu) was considered as comparison. The acid-base properties of the free ligands and the kinetic, thermodynamic, and structural properties of their Cu2+ and Cu+ complexes were investigated in solution and solid (crystal) states through a combination of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The formation of two stable mononuclear species was detected in aqueous solution for both ligands. The pCu2+ value for NO3S at physiological pH was 6 orders of magnitude higher than that computed for TACN-n-Bu, pointing out the significant stabilizing contribution arising from the Cu2+-S interactions. In both the solid state and solution, Cu2+ was fully embedded in the ligand cleft in a hexacoordinated N3S3 environment. Furthermore, NO3S exhibited a remarkable ability to form a stable complex with Cu+ through the involvement of all of the donors in the coordination sphere. Radiolabeling studies evidenced an excellent affinity of NO3S toward [64Cu]Cu2+, as quantitative incorporation was achieved at high apparent molar activity (â¼10 MBq/nmol) and under mild conditions (ambient temperature, neutral pH, 10 min reaction time). Human serum stability assays revealed an increased stability of [64Cu][Cu(NO3S)]2+ when compared to the corresponding complexes formed by 12-, 13-, or 14-membered tetraaza rings.
RESUMEN
Use of iron-based catalysts in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is very interesting because of the abundance of the metal and its biocompatibility. Although the mechanism of action is not well understood yet, iron halide salts are usually used as catalysts, often in the presence of nitrogen or phosphorous ligands (L). In this study, electrochemically mediated ATRP (eATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) catalyzed by FeCl3, both in the absence and presence of additional ligands, was investigated in dimethylformamide. The electrochemical behavior of FeCl3 and FeCl3/L was deeply investigated showing the speciation of Fe(III) and Fe(II) and the role played by added ligands. It is shown that amine ligands form stable iron complexes, whereas phosphines act as reducing agents. eATRP of MMA catalyzed by FeCl3 was investigated in different conditions. In particular, the effects of temperature, catalyst concentration, catalyst-to-initiator ratio, halide ion excess and added ligands were investigated. In general, polymerization was moderately fast but difficult to control. Surprisingly, the best results were obtained with FeCl3 without any other ligand. Electrogenerated Fe(II) effectively activates the dormant chains but deactivation of the propagating radicals by Fe(III) species is less efficient, resulting in dispersity > 1.5, unless a high concentration of FeCl3 is used.

Carbon materials slightly doped with heteroatoms such as nitrogen (N-RFC) or sulfur (S-RFC) are investigated as active catalysts for the electrochemical bielectronic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to H2 O2 . Mesoporous carbons with wide, accessible pores were prepared by pyrolysis of a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin using a PEO-b-PS block copolymer as a sacrificial templating agent and the nitrogen and sulfur doping were accomplished in a second thermal treatment employing 1,10-phenanthroline and dibenzothiophene as nitrogen and sulfur precursors, respectively. The synthetic strategy allowed to obtain carbon materials with very high surface area and mesopore volume without any further physicochemical post treatment. Voltammetric rotating ring-disk measurements in combination with potentiostatic and galvanostatic bulk electrolysis measurements in 0.5 m H2 SO4 demonstrated a pronounced effect of heteroatom doping and mesopores volume on the catalytic activity and selectivity for H2 O2 . N-RFC electrode was employed as electrode material in a 45â h electrolysis showing a constant H2 O2 production of 298â mmol g-1 h-1 (millimoles of H2 O2 divided by mass of catalyst and electrolysis time), with a faradic efficiency (FE) up to 61 % and without any clear evidence of degradation. The undoped carbon RFC showed a lower production rate (218â mmol g-1 h-1 ) but a higher FE of 76 %, while the performances drastically dropped when S-RFC (production rate 11â mmol g-1 h-1 and FE=39 %) was used.
RESUMEN
Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is the most powerful and most employed technology of Controlled Radical Polymerization (CRP) to produce polymers with well-defined architecture, that is, composition, topology, and functionality. Several hundreds of papers are published every year on ATRP processes, mainly based on empiric experimental procedures. Electrochemistry powerfully entered in the field of ATRP about 10â years ago, providing important contributions both to the further development of the process and to a better understanding of its mechanism. Five main issues took advantage of electrochemistry and/or its synergism with ATRP: i) understanding the mechanism of ATRP activation; ii) determination of thermodynamic parameters; iii) determination of activation and deactivation rate constants; iv) the SARA ATRP vs SET-LRP dispute: the role of Cu0 ; v) electrochemically-mediated ATRP.
RESUMEN
The Cu2+ complexes formed by a series of cyclen derivatives bearing sulfur pendant arms, 1,4,7,10-tetrakis[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO4S), 1,4,7-tris[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO3S), 1,4,7-tris[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-10-acetamido-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO3SAm), and 1,7-bis[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-4,10-diacetic acid-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO2A2S), were studied in aqueous solution at 25 °C from thermodynamic and structural points of view to evaluate their potential as chelators for copper radioisotopes. UV-vis spectrophotometric out-of-cell titrations under strongly acidic conditions, direct in-cell UV-vis titrations, potentiometric measurements at pH >4, and spectrophotometric Ag+-Cu2+ competition experiments were performed to evaluate the stoichiometry and stability constants of the Cu2+ complexes. A highly stable 1:1 metal-to-ligand complex (CuL) was found in solution at all pH values for all chelators, and for DO2A2S, protonated species were also detected under acidic conditions. The structures of the Cu2+ complexes in aqueous solution were investigated by UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and the results were supported by relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Isomers were detected that differed from their coordination modes. Crystals of [Cu(DO4S)(NO3)]·NO3 and [Cu(DO2A2S)] suitable for X-ray diffraction were obtained. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments highlighted the remarkable stability of the copper complexes with reference to dissociation upon reduction from Cu2+ to Cu+ on the CV time scale. The Cu+ complexes were generated in situ by electrolysis and examined by NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations gave further structural insights. These results demonstrate that the investigated sulfur-containing chelators are promising candidates for application in copper-based radiopharmaceuticals. In this connection, the high stability of both Cu2+ and Cu+ complexes can represent a key parameter for avoiding in vivo demetalation after bioinduced reduction to Cu+, often observed for other well-known chelators that can stabilize only Cu2+.

To achieve enantioselective electroanalysis either chiral electrodes or chiral media are needed. High enantiodiscrimination properties can be granted by the "inherent chirality" strategy of developing molecular materials in which the stereogenic element responsible for chirality coincides with the molecular portion responsible for their specific properties, an approach recently yielding outstanding performances as electrode surfaces. Inherently chiral ionic liquids (ICILs) have now been prepared starting from atropisomeric 3,3'-bicollidine, synthesized from inexpensive reagents, resolved into antipodes without need of chiral HPLC and converted into long-chain dialkyl salts with melting points below room temperature. Both the new ICILs and shorter family terms, solid at room temperature, employed as low-concentration additives in achiral ILs, afford impressive enantioselection for the enantiomers of different probes on achiral electrodes, regularly increasing with additive concentration.

Gold(I) dicarbene complexes [Au2 (MeIm-Y-ImMe)2 ](PF6 )2 (Y=CH2 (1), (CH2 )2 (2), (CH2 )4 (4), MeIm=1-methylimidazol-2-ylidene) react with iodine to give the mixed-valence complex [Au(MeIm-CH2 -ImMe)2 AuI2 ](PF6 )2 (1 a(I) ) and the gold(III) complexes [Au2 I4 (MeIm-Y-ImMe)2 ](PF6 )2 (2 c(I) and 4 c(I) ). Reaction of complexes 1 and 2 with an excess of ICl allows the isolation of the tetrachloro gold(III) complexes [Au2 Cl4 (MeIm-CH2 -ImMe)2 ](PF6 )2 (1 c(Cl) ) and [Au2 Cl4 (MeIm-(CH2 )2 -ImMe)2 ](Cl)2 (2 c(Cl) -Cl) (as main product); remarkably in the case of complex 2, the X-ray molecular structure of the crystals also shows the presence of I-Au-Cl mixed-sphere coordination. The same type of coordination has been observed in the main product of the reaction of complexes 3 or 4 with ICl. The study of the reactivity towards the oxidative addition of halogens to a large series of dinuclear bis(dicarbene) gold(I) complexes has been extended and reviewed. The complexes react with Cl2 , Br2 and I2 to give the successive formation of the mixed-valence gold(I)/gold(III) n a(X) and gold(III) n c(X) (excluding compound 1 c(I) ) complexes. However, complex 3 affords with Cl2 and Br2 the gold(II) complex 3 b(X) [Au2 X2 (MeIm-(CH2 )3 -ImMe)2 ](PF6 )2 (X=Cl, Br), which is the predominant species over compound 3 c(X) even in the presence of free halogen. The observed different relative stabilities of the oxidised complexes of compounds 1 and 3 have also been confirmed by DFT calculations.
RESUMEN
The excessive cost, unsustainability or complex production of new highly selective electrocatalysts for H2O2 production, especially noble-metal-based ones, is prohibitive in the water treatment sector. To solve this conundrum, biomass-derived carbons with adequate textural properties were synthesized via agarose double-step pyrolysis followed by steam activation. A longer steam treatment enhanced the graphitization and porosity, even surpassing commercial carbon black. Steam treatment for 20 min yielded the greatest surface area (1248 m2 g-1), enhanced the mesopore/micropore volume distribution and increased the activity (E1/2 = 0.609 V) and yield of H2O2 (40%) as determined by RRDE. The upgraded textural properties had very positive impact on the ability of the corresponding gas-diffusion electrodes (GDEs) to accumulate H2O2, reaching Faradaic current efficiencies of ~95% at 30 min. Acidic solutions of ß-blocker acebutolol were treated by photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) process in synthetic media with and without chloride. In urban wastewater, total drug disappearance was reached at 60 min with almost 50% mineralization after 360 min at only 10 mA cm-2. Up to 14 degradation products were identified in the Cl--containing medium.

The metal-support interactions between sulfur-doped carbon supports (SMCs) and Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated, aiming at verifying how sulfur functional groups can improve the electrocatalytic performance of Pt NPs towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). SMCs were synthetized, tailoring the density of sulfur functional groups, and Pt NPs were deposited by thermal reduction of Pt(acac)2 . The extent of the metal-support interaction was proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, which revealed a strong electronic interaction, proportional to the density of sulfur defects, whereas XRD spectra provided evidence of higher strain in Pt NPs loaded on SMC. DFT simulations confirmed that the metal-support interaction was strongest in the presence of a high density of sulfur defects. The combination of microstrain and electronic effects resulted in a high catalytic activity of supported Pt NPs towards ORR, with linear correlations of the half-wave potential E1/2 or the kinetic current jk with the sulfur content in the support. Furthermore, a mass activity value (550â A g-1 ) well above the United States Department of Energy target of 440â A g-1 at 0.9â V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE), was determined.

This work was aimed to the development of a set of new naphtoquinone derivatives that can act against glioma. The compounds were tested in order to find out their ability to inhibit the growth of glioma cells, and the results of these assays were correlated with electrochemical analysis and NMR-based reoxidation kinetic studies, suggesting that a redox mechanism underlies and may explain the observed biological behavior. In addition to a full description of the synthetic pathways, electrochemistry, NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction data are provided.

Four novel dinuclear N-heterocyclic dicarbene gold(I) complexes with a propylene linker between the carbene moieties have been synthesized and their luminescence and electrochemical properties, together with their reactivity towards bromine oxidative addition, have been screened. All the complexes emit in the solid state in the blue-green spectral range (400-500 nm) with appreciable intensities (Φ(em) up to ≈10%). In cyclic voltammetry, the Au(I)/Au(0) peak splits at low temperature into two separate peaks relative to the couples Au(I)-Au(I)/Au(I)-Au(0) and Au(I)-Au(0)/Au(0)-Au(0), thus indicating the presence of an Au···Au interaction in the dinuclear complex. Oxidative addition of bromine affords as a major or unique product Au(II)-Au(II) complexes most likely as a consequence of the interaction between the two gold centres favoured by the propylene linker.
RESUMEN
Using Cr-EDTA as a model system, a two-step method has been investigated for the abatement of persistent chromium complexes in water. The treatment consists of an oxidative decomposition of the organic ligands by means of ozonization or electrochemical oxidation at a boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode, followed by removal of the metal via electrochemical coagulation. In the designed synthetic waste, EDTA has been used both as a chelating agent and as a mimic of the organic content of a typical wastewater provided by a purification leather plant. A crucial point evaluated is the influence of the oxidative pretreatment on the chemical modification of the synthetic waste and hence on the electrocoagulation efficacy. Because of the great stability of Cr complexes, such as Cr-EDTA, the classical coagulation methods, based on ligand exchange between Cr(III) and Fe(II) or Fe(III), are ineffective toward Cr abatement in the presence of organic substances. On the contrary, when advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as ozonization or electrooxidation at a BDD anode are applied in series with electrocoagulation (EC), complete abatement of the recalcitrant Cr fraction can be achieved. ECs have been carried out by using Fe sacrificial anodes, with alternating polarization and complete Cr abatement (over 99%) has been obtained with modest charge consumption. It has been found that Cr(III) is first oxidized to Cr(VI) in the AOP preceding EC. Then, during EC, Cr(VI) is mainly reduced back to Cr(III) by electrogenerated Fe(II). Thus, Cr is mainly eliminated as Cr(III). However, a small fraction of Cr(VI) goes with the precipitate as confirmed by XPS analysis of the sludge.

This paper reports investigations on electrochemical removal of Cr(III) from a real wastewater sample from a 4x10(4)m(3)d(-1) purification plant located in the leather district of Arzignano (Italy). A crucial point evaluated is the relation between Cr(III) abatement and the reduction of total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand. Here we present the results of different abatement approaches including advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and electrocoagulation applied separately or in series. Neither of these methods show satisfactory results when applied alone. In particular, AOPs are completely inefficient owing to the formation of Cr(VI), which is more soluble than Cr(III). Almost total depletion (99.7%) of the recalcitrant fraction of Cr(III) is successfully achieved by combining ozonization and electrocoagulation processes. The results are consistent with the abatement of Cr in its hexavalent form by fast precipitation as NH(4)Fe(CrO(4))(2).
