RESUMEN

Serotonergic neurotransmission has been associated with aggression in several psychiatric disorders. Human aggression is a continuum of traits, ranging from normal to pathological phenomena. However, the individual differences in serotonergic neurotransmission and their relationships with aggression traits in healthy individuals remain unclear. In this study, we explored the relationship between 5-HT2A receptor availability in vivo and aggression traits in healthy participants. Thirty-three healthy participants underwent 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography (PET) with [11C]MDL100907, a selective radioligand for 5-HT2A receptors. To quantify 5-HT2A receptor availability, the binding potential (BPND) was derived using the basis function implementation of the simplified reference tissue model, with the cerebellum as the reference region. The participants' aggression levels were assessed using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire. The voxel-based correlation analysis with age and sex as covariates revealed that the total aggression score was significantly positively correlated with [11C]MDL100907 BPND in the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) pole, left fusiform gyrus (FUSI), right parahippocampal gyrus, and right hippocampus. The physical aggression subscale score had significant positive correlations with [11C]MDL100907 BPND in the left olfactory cortex, left orbital superior frontal gyrus (SFG), right anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyri, left orbitomedial SFG, left gyrus rectus, left MTG, left inferior temporal gyrus, and left angular gyrus. The verbal aggression subscale score showed significant positive correlations with [11C]MDL100907 BPND in the bilateral SFG, right medial SFG, left FUSI, and right MTG pole. Overall, our findings suggest the possibility of positive correlations between aggression traits and in vivo 5-HT2A receptor availability in healthy individuals. Future research should incorporate multimodal neuroimaging to investigate the downstream effects of 5-HT2A receptor-mediated signaling and integrate molecular and systems-level information in relation to aggression traits.

Anthocyanin accumulation is responsible for the coloration of apple fruit, and their accumulation depends on the expression of anthocyanin biosynthesis-related genes. Light is an environmental stimulus that induces fruit color by regulating genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway. In this study, the roles of light and genetic factors on fruit coloration and anthocyanin accumulation in apple fruit were investigated. Three genes in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, MdCHS, MdANS, and MdUFGT1, were synthesized and cloned into a viral-based expression vector system for transient expression in 'Ruby S' apple fruits. Apple fruits were agroinfiltrated with expression vectors harboring MdCHS, MdANS, and MdUFGT1. Agroinfiltrated apple fruits were then either kept in the dark (bagged fruits) or exposed to light (exposed fruits). The agroinfiltrated fruits showed significantly different coloration patterns, transcript expression levels, and anthocyanin accumulation compared to the control fruits. Moreover, these parameters were higher in exposed fruits than in bagged fruits. For stable expression, MdCHS was introduced into a binary vector under the control of the rice α-amylase 3D (RAmy3D) promoter. The ectopic overexpression of MdCHS in transgenic rice calli showed a high accumulation of anthocyanin content. Taken together, our findings suggest that light, together with the overexpression of anthocyanin biosynthesis genes, induced the coloration and accumulation of anthocyanin content in apple fruits by upregulating the expression of the genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway.

Zinc finger protein with KRAB and SCAN domains 3 (ZKSCAN3) acts as an oncogenic transcription factor in human malignant tumors, including colon and prostate cancer. However, most of the ZKSCAN3-induced carcinogenic mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we identified ZKSCAN3 as a downstream effector of the oncogenic Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, using RNA sequencing and ChIP analyses. Activation of the Wnt pathway by recombinant Wnt gene family proteins or the GSK inhibitor, CHIR 99021 upregulated ZKSCAN3 expression in a ß-catenin-dependent manner. Furthermore, ZKSCAN3 upregulation suppressed the expression of the mitotic spindle checkpoint protein, Mitotic Arrest Deficient 2 Like 2 (MAD2L2) by inhibiting its promoter activity and eventually inducing chromosomal instability in colon cancer cells. Conversely, deletion or knockdown of ZKSCAN3 increased MAD2L2 expression and delayed cell cycle progression. In addition, ZKSCAN3 upregulation by oncogenic WNT/ß-catenin signaling is an early event of the adenoma-carcinoma sequence in colon cancer development. Specifically, immunohistochemical studies (IHC) were performed using normal (NM), hyperplastic polyps (HPP), adenomas (AD), and adenocarcinomas (AC). Their IHC scores were considerably different (61.4 in NM; 88.4 in HPP; 189.6 in AD; 246.9 in AC). In conclusion, ZKSCAN3 could be responsible for WNT/ß-catenin-induced chromosomal instability in colon cancer cells through the suppression of MAD2L2 expression.

Tactile hallucinations frequently occur after mental illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Despite their common occurrence, there are several complicating factors that make it difficult to elucidate the tactile hallucinations. The forehead tactile hallucination, evoked by the physical object approaching to the forehead, can be easily and consistently evoked in healthy-bodied subjects, and therefore it would help with investigating the mechanism of tactile hallucinations. In this pilot study, we investigated the principles of the forehead tactile hallucination with eight healthy subjects. We designed the experimental setup to test the effect of sharpness and speed of objects approaching towards the forehead on the forehead tactile hallucination, in both a physical and virtual experimental setting. The forehead tactile hallucination was successfully evoked by virtual object as well as physical object, approaching the forehead. The forehead tactile hallucination was increased by the increase of sharpness and speed of the approaching object. The forehead tactile hallucination also increased the tactile sensitivity on the forehead. The forehead tactile hallucination can be solely evoked by visual feedback and augmented by the increased perceived risk. The forehead tactile hallucination also increases tactile sensitivity. These experimental results may enhance the understanding of the foundational mechanisms of tactile hallucinations.

(1) Background: Insects, which serve as model systems for many disciplines with their unique advantages, have not been extensively studied in gait research because of the lack of appropriate tools and insect models to properly study the insect gaits. (2) Methods: In this study, we present a gait analysis of grasshoppers with a closed-loop custom-designed motorized insect treadmill with an optical recording system for quantitative gait analysis. We used the eastern lubber grasshopper, a flightless and large-bodied species, as our insect model. Gait kinematics were recorded and analyzed by making three grasshoppers walk on the treadmill with various speeds from 0.1 to 1.5 m/s. (3) Results: Stance duty factor was measured as 70-95% and decreased as walking speed increased. As the walking speed increased, the number of contact legs decreased, and diagonal arrangement of contact was observed at walking speed of 1.1 cm/s. (4) Conclusions: This pilot study of gait analysis of grasshoppers using the custom-designed motorized insect treadmill with the optical recording system demonstrates the feasibility of quantitative, repeatable, and real-time insect gait analysis.

Genetic research has implicated dopamine neurotransmission in the expression of the self-transcendence trait in humans. However, molecular imaging of dopaminergic markers is undocumented in relation to this personality trait. In this multimodal imaging study, we first investigated the relationship between the self-transcendence trait and in vivo dopamine D2/3 receptor availability using [18 F]fallypride positron emission tomography (PET). We next conducted seed-based functional connectivity analyses using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data with regions derived from the PET analysis as seeds to explore the functional significance of D2/3 receptor availability foci associated with the self-transcendence trait. Twenty-one healthy subjects underwent high-resolution PET with [18 F]fallypride and a subset of 18 subjects also completed 3-Tesla rs-fMRI. The Temperament and Character Inventory was used to measure the self-transcendence trait. A voxel-based whole brain analysis revealed that the [18 F]fallypride binding potential (BPND ) within the cluster of the left insula was significantly positively correlated with self-transcendence trait scores. A region-of-interest analysis also showed a significant positive correlation between self-transcendence and [18 F]fallypride BPND in the left insula. The exploratory [18 F]fallypride BPND seed-based rs-fMRI analysis showed that the functional connectivity from the left insula seed to the prefrontal cortices (including the inferior frontal region) was negatively associated with self-transcendence trait scores. The results of the present study suggest that D2/3 receptor-mediated neurotransmission in the left insula may constitute a significant neurobiological factor in the self-transcendence trait. The negative associations between BPND seed-based functional connectivity and self-transcendence trait scores may suggest reduced prefrontal control in this personality trait.

In addition to probing regional differences in receptor availability, molecular positron emission tomography (PET) is proving useful for investigating perturbations in neurotransmitter networks using interregional correlation analyses. In a multi-modal imaging study, we examined interregional correlations of dopamine D2/3 receptor availability between striatal and extrastriatal regions using [18 F]fallypride high-resolution PET in 11 patients with schizophrenia receiving low-dose maintenance atypical antipsychotics and 14 healthy control subjects, and investigated resting-state functional connectivity in the same subjects using seed-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis. In the healthy control group, there were no significant correlations of [18 F]fallypride binding potential (BPND ) between striatal regions and any cortical areas, whereas the patient group showed significant and widespread inter-correlations. Correlations between BPND in striatum, amygdala and insula with cortex were significantly higher in patients than in controls. In seed-based resting-state fMRI analysis, the healthy controls revealed positive and negative functional connectivity patterns, while patients exhibited a pattern of exclusively positive connectivity. Functional connectivity was significantly higher between striatal regions and extrastriatal areas including cortical regions in patients compared to controls. In this first such report, molecular and functional connectivity between striatal and extrastriatal regions was primarily characterized by increased interregional relationships in treated patients with schizophrenia. The results suggest that the spatial organization of D2/3 receptor availability and related functional connectivity are significantly perturbed in stable outpatients on maintenance antipsychotics. Future studies should include antipsychotic-naïve patients to determine if these relationships are illness-related characteristics, or arising due to chronic antipsychotic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the role of exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) on susceptibility to asthma in children with past episodes of bronchiolitis. METHODS: The baseline data included 2,627 school children aged 6-14 years who had participated in the longitudinal follow-up survey of the Children's Health and Environmental Research of Korea. Lifetime wheezing, past episodes of bronchiolitis, and doctor-diagnosed asthma were evaluated using an International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire. We used generalized linear regression with binomial distribution to calculate the relative risk (RR) between TRAP, assessed by proximity to a main road and the total length of roads, and asthma. RESULTS: Compared with the subjects who had less than 100 m of road length within 200-m radius from their home, those with more than 500 m of road length had significantly increased odds for infantile bronchiolitis (adjusted OR [aOR]: 1.57, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-2.42). Positive exposure-response relationships were found between residential proximity to the main road and asthma (aOR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.05-3.06; <75 m vs. >700 m from a main road, P for the trend = 0.02). Closer residential proximity to the main road (<75 m) and bronchiolitis combined increased the risks of newly diagnosed asthma (adjusted RR: 3.62, 95% CI: 1.07-12.26) compared with those without bronchiolitis and living ≥ 75 m away from the main road. CONCLUSIONS: TRAP appeared to be associated with an increased asthma among children with bronchiolitis, indicating the importance of modifying effects of bronchiolitis in asthma pathogenesis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between specific symptom severity and D2/3 receptor availability in extrastriatal regions in outpatients with schizophrenia to shed light on the role of extrastriatal dopaminergic neurotransmission in the pathophysiology of symptoms of schizophrenia. Sixteen schizophrenia patients receiving relatively low-dose maintenance atypical antipsychotics and seventeen healthy controls underwent 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution positron emission tomography with [18F]fallypride. For D2/3 receptor availability, the binding potential with respect to non-displaceable compartment (BPND) was derived using the simplified reference tissue model. The BPND values were lower in patients on antipsychotic treatment than in controls across all regions with large effect sizes (1.03-1.42). The regions with the largest effect size were the substantia nigra, amygdala, and insula. Symptoms of schizophrenia were assessed using a five-factor model of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). The region of interest-based analysis showed that PANSS excitement factor score had a significant positive correlation with the [18F]fallypride BPND in the insula. The equivalent dose of antipsychotics was not significantly correlated with PANSS factor scores or regional BPND values. The voxel-based analysis also revealed a significant positive association between the PANSS excitement factor and the [18F]fallypride BPND in the insula. The present study revealed a significant association between excitement symptom severity and D2/3 receptor availability in the insula in schizophrenia, suggesting a possible important role of D2/3 receptor-mediated neurotransmission in the insula and related limbic system in the pathophysiology of this specific symptom cluster.

CONTEXT: Asian dust events are associated with increased asthma incidence, asthma exacerbation, decreased lung function and increased risk for hospitalization. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Asian dust events on asthma exacerbation by socioeconomic status using national health insurance claims data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-crossover design was used to analyze asthma-related national health insurance claims, air pollutant and climate data from 2007 to 2013 in Seoul and Incheon, Korea. We stratified our analysis by socioeconomic status (health insurance versus medical aid subscribers) and calculated the maximum air pollutant levels and average climate values per day. The number of asthma-related visits to medical institutions per day was compared between "event" and "control" days. RESULTS: Compared with "control days", the average number of asthma-related visits to medical institutions decreased on "event" days and increased 1-5 d thereafter. The number of visits by health insurance subscribers also decreased on "event" days and increased 1-5 d thereafter, while the number of visits by medical aid subscribers did not change on "event" days but increased 1-4 d thereafter. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Our study confirms that Asian dust events result in an increased number of asthma-related visits to medical institutions. This effect differed by socioeconomic status.

Hybrid materials composed of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots and π-conjugated organic molecules and polymers have attracted continuous interest in recent years, because they may find applications in bio-sensing, photodetection, and photovoltaics. Fundamental processes occurring in these nanohybrids are light absorption and emission as well as energy and/or charge transfer between the components. For future applications it is mandatory to understand, control, and optimize the wide parameter space with respect to chemical assembly and the desired photophysical properties. Accordingly, different approaches to tackle this issue are described here. Simple organic dye molecules (Dye)/quantum dot (QD) conjugates are studied with stationary and time-resolved spectroscopy to address the dynamics of energy and ultra-fast charge transfer. Micellar as well as lamellar nanostructures derived from diblock copolymers are employed to fine-tune the energy transfer efficiency of QD donor/dye acceptor couples. Finally, the transport of charges through organic components coupled to the quantum dot surface is discussed with an emphasis on functional devices.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with high-level spinal cord injuries need effective ways to perform activities. OBJECTIVES: To develop and test a medically supervised tongue-piercing protocol and the wearing of a magnet-containing tongue barbell for use with the Tongue Drive System (TDS) in persons with tetraplegia. METHODS: Volunteers with tetraplegia underwent initial screening sessions using a magnet glued on the tongue to activate and use the TDS. This was followed by tongue piercing, insertion of a standard barbell, a 4-week healing period, and an exchange of the standard barbell for a magnet-containing barbell. This was then used twice weekly for 6 to 8 weeks to perform computer tasks, drive a powered wheelchair, accomplish in-chair weight shifts, and dial a phone. Symptoms of intraoral dysfunction, change in tongue size following piercing, and subjective assessment of receiving and wearing a magnet-containing tongue barbell and its usability with the TDS were evaluated. RESULTS: Twenty-one volunteers underwent initial trial sessions. Thirteen had their tongues pierced. One individual's barbell dislodged during healing resulting in tongue-tract closure. Twelve had the barbell exchanged for a magnet-containing barbell. One subject withdrew for unrelated issues. Eleven completed the TDS testing sessions and were able to complete the assigned tasks. No serious adverse events occurred related to wearing or using a tongue barbell to operate the TDS. CONCLUSIONS: Using careful selection criteria and a medically supervised piercing protocol, no excess risk was associated with tongue piercing and wearing a tongue barbell in people with tetraplegia. Participants were able to operate the TDS.

The human telomeric protein TRF1 is a component of the six-subunit protein complex shelterin, which provides telomere protection by organizing the telomere into a high-order structure. TRF1 functions as a negative regulator of telomere length by controlling the access of telomerase to telomeres. Thus, the cellular abundance of TRF1 at telomeres should be maintained and tightly regulated to ensure proper telomere function. Here, we identify U2 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) auxiliary factor 65 (U2AF65), an essentialpre-mRNA splicingfactor, as a novel TRF1-interacting protein. U2AF65 interacts with TRF1 in vitro and in vivo and is capable of stabilizing TRF1 protein by inhibiting its ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis. We also found that U2AF65 interferes with the interaction between TRF1 and Fbx4, an E3 ubiquitin ligase for TRF1. Depletion of endogenous U2AF65 expression by short interfering RNA (siRNA) reduced the stability of endogenous TRF1 whereas overexpression of U2AF65 significantly extended the half-life of TRF1. These findings demonstrate that U2AF65 plays a critical role in regulating the level of TRF1 through physical interaction and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis. Hence, U2AF65 represents a new route for modulating TRF1 function at telomeres.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To measure the activity of individual raphe nuclei with fluorine 18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and carbon 11 ((11)C) 3-amino-4-(2-dimethylaminomethylphenylthio) benzonitrile (DASB) imaging using a brain positron emission tomography(PET)/magnetic resonance (MR) imaging fusion system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Gil Medical Center, and all volunteers provided written informed consent. FDG PET, (11)C-DASB PET, and T2*-weighted MR images from seven healthy volunteers were acquired by using a PET/MR imaging fusion system. The standard uptake value ratio (SUVR) of FDG (FDG-SUVR) and nondisplaceable binding potential (BPnd) of (11)C-DASB (DASB-BPnd) were determined for each raphe nucleus. A Pearson correlation analysis was performed to show the correlation between FDG-SUVR and DASB-BPnd for the raphe nuclei. RESULTS: Each raphe nucleus could be distinguished in both FDG (identifiability ratio, 0.86; κ = 0.77) and (11)C-DASB (identifiability ratio, 0.89; κ = 0.72) images. The mean values of DASB-BPnd for each raphe nucleus from dorsal to caudal direction were 6.08 (raphe nucleus 1), 5.93 (raphe nucleus 2), 3.86 (raphe nucleus 3), 3.18 (raphe nucleus 4), and 2.74 (raphe nucleus 5); the mean FDG-SUVR values were 1.00 (raphe nucleus 1), 1.00 (raphe nucleus 2), 0.87 (raphe nucleus 3), 0.94 (raphe nucleus 4), and 0.90 (raphe nucleus 5). FDG-SUVR and DASB-BPnd for the raphe nuclei were significantly correlated (r = 0.506, P = .002). CONCLUSION: Serotonergic activity, both glucose metabolism and transporter binding potential of raphe nuclei, were measured with a brain-dedicated PET/MR imaging system and showed a significant correlation.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers are caused by a variety of factors, including peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, impaired wound healing mechanisms, and repetitive trauma. Patients with diabetic foot ulcer on the dorsum of the foot are often treated surgically. However, the right non-surgical therapy must be chosen if surgical choices are contraindicated or if the patient prefers conservative treatment over surgery. CASE SUMMARY: The purpose of this case report is to highlight the efficacy of polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) injection as a non-surgical treatment option for diabetic foot ulcers on the dorsum of the foot, particularly in patients who choose against surgical intervention. This case report presents two cases of diabetic foot ulcers located on the dorsum of the foot that were successfully treated with PDRN injection as a non-surgical intervention. CONCLUSION: If the patient declines surgery for diabetic ulcers with Wagner grade II or below, PDRN injection can be effective if necrotic tissue is removed and the wound bed kept clean.

Introduction: Plantar cutaneous augmentation is a promising approach in balance rehabilitation by enhancing motion-dependent sensory feedback. The effect of plantar cutaneous augmentation on balance has been mainly investigated in its passive form (e.g., textured insole) or on lower-limb amputees. In this study, we tested the effect of plantar cutaneous augmentation on balance in its active form (i.e., electrical stimulation) for individuals with intact limbs. Methods: Ten healthy subjects participated in the study and were instructed to maintain their balance as long as possible on the balance board, with or without electrotactile feedback evoked on the medial side of the heel, synched with the lateral board sway. Electrotactile feedback was given in two different modes: 1) Discrete-mode E-stim as the stimulation on/off by a predefined threshold of lateral board sway and 2) Proportional-mode E-stim as the stimulation frequency proportional to the amount of lateral board sway. All subjects were distracted from the balancing task by the n-back counting task, to test subjects' balancing capability with minimal cognitive involvement. Results: Proportional-mode E-stim, along with the n-back counting task, increased the balance time from 1.86 ± 0.03 s to 1.98 ± 0.04 s (p = 0.010). However, discrete-mode E-stim did not change the balance time (p = 0.669). Proportional-mode E-stim also increased the time duration per each swayed state (p = 0.035) while discrete-mode E-stim did not (p = 0.053). Discussion: These results suggest that proportional-mode E-stim is more effective than discrete-mode E-stim on improving standing balance. It is perhaps because the proportional electrotactile feedback better mimics the natural tactile sensation of foot pressure than its discrete counterpart.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive factors for persistent disease activity following anti-vascular endothelial growth factors (anti-VEGF) and their long-term effects in patients to be treated for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) under real-world conditions. METHODS: Retrospective data analysis of the PROOF study, a multi-center real-world retrospective chart review conducted across Korea in patients with nAMD included treatment-naive patients with nAMD who received first anti-VEGF (ranibizumab, bevacizumab, or aflibercept) between January 2017 and March 2019 was performed. All 600 patients (cohort 1) had a minimum follow-up of 12 months of which 453 patients (cohort 2) were followed-up for 24 months from baseline. RESULTS: At month 12 after anti-VEGF therapy, 58.10% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 54.09, 62.12) of patients and at month 24, 66.02% of patients continued to have persistent retinal fluid. At both months 12 and 24, predictive factors for persistent disease activity were fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachments (PED) (P = 0.0494) and retinal fluid at month 3 after loading phase (P = 0.0082). The mean changes in visual acuity were + 6.2, + 10.1, and + 13.3 letters and in the central subfield thickness were - 79.1 µm, - 96.3 µm, and - 134.4 µm at 12 months from baseline, in the bevacizumab, aflibercept, and ranibizumab groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of retinal fluid after loading phase and fibrovascular PED were predictors of persistent disease activity after at least 1 year of anti-VEGF treatment.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to examine the relationship between job-related stress, emotional labor, and depressive symptoms among South Korean nurses in order to suggest practical methods for their management, prevention, and reduction. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used to conduct the study. A convenience sample of 441 nurses who were employed in five general hospitals in four provinces of Korea was used in the study. METHODS: A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data, which included demographic and job characteristics, job-related stress, emotional labor, and depressive symptoms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared testing, and multivariate logistic regression. FINDINGS: Approximately 38% of South Korean nurses experience depressive symptoms, and young or single nurses in particular have high levels of depressive symptoms. Marital status (odds ratio [OR] = 2.88), surface acting (OR = 2.46), job insecurity (OR = 1.99), and lack of reward (OR = 1.60) are strongly related depressive symptoms that result from job-related stress. CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate that programs for nurses need to be created that will help reduce expectations for surface acting and control job-related stress, thus preventing the development of depressive symptoms. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study has implications for human resources management in nursing organizations. If nursing administrators understand that nurses may suffer from depressive symptoms, they can strive to improve stressful work conditions, develop programs that ease job-related stress, and reduce the chances that depressive symptoms will occur.

PURPOSE: To introduce the sutureless technique to appose flaps using the BioGlue composed of bovine serum albumin (45%) and glutaraldehyde (10%) in the external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). METHODS: The clinical chart was reviewed, retrospectively. The authors studied 31 case series of 30 patients who underwent the external DCR using the BioGlue in the step of apposing flaps. Instead of the suture technique, BioGlue was applied to appose flaps. Other steps were performed in the similar fashion to the conventional external DCR. And also, authors studied 31 case series of 30 patients who underwent the external DCR with conventional suture technique. RESULTS: Mean follow-up period is 12.5 months in study group and 12.6 months in control group. During mean follow up, 3 cases of membrane formation were observed, and patency of the anastomosis was kept well established in 28 cases (90%) in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Sutureless apposition of flaps using the BioGlue can be an alternative method for the conventional suture technique in the external DCR. Also, it is easy and safe procedure to perform.

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) use for managing pain and to investigate the factors predictive of current CAM use among rural older women in South Korea. BACKGROUND: Access to medical care among older adults in rural areas is poorer than in urban areas. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study with a stratified sample of 139 women aged over 65 with chronic pain residing in rural areas of Jeju Island, South Korea. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data. RESULTS: Most subjects reported using at least one type of CAM for relieving pain within the past 12 months. Almost half of them reported currently using CAM. Herbs were the most commonly used CAM. Only 'severity of pain' was presently associated with an increased use of CAM. CONCLUSION: It is imperative to take socio-geographic-cultural factors into consideration when planning health promotion programs and caring for clients.
