In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}Nâ_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.
RESUMEN
Transverse single-spin asymmetries of very forward neutral pions generated in polarized p+p collisions allow us to understand the production mechanism in terms of perturbative and nonperturbative strong interactions. During 2017, the RHICf Collaboration installed an electromagnetic calorimeter in the zero-degree region of the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and measured neutral pions produced at pseudorapidity larger than 6 in polarized p+p collisions at sqrt[s]=510 GeV. The large nonzero asymmetries increasing both in longitudinal momentum fraction x_{F} and transverse momentum p_{T} have been observed at low transverse momentum p_{T}<1 GeV/c for the first time, at this collision energy. The asymmetries show an approximate x_{F} scaling in the p_{T} region where nonperturbative processes are expected to dominate. A non-negligible contribution from soft processes may be necessary to explain the nonzero neutral pion asymmetries.

AIM: Preoperative factors predictive of permanent stoma creation were investigated in a long-term follow-up of patients with mid or low rectal cancer. METHOD: We included patients who underwent radical resection for mid or low rectal cancer with available data for preoperative anal function measured by manometry and Faecal Incontinence Severity Index questionnaire between January 2005 and December 2015 in three tertiary referral hospitals. A permanent stoma was defined as a stoma present until the patient's last follow-up visit or death. Preoperative factors that predicted permanent stoma creation were analysed. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 57.4 months (range 12-143 months), a permanent stoma was created in 144/577 (25.0%) patients, including 89 (15.4%) who underwent abdominoperineal resection, one (0.2%) who underwent Hartmann's operation without reversal, 15 (2.6%) with a diverting ileostomy at the time of initial sphincter-preserving surgery without undergoing stoma reversal, and 39 (6.8%) who underwent permanent ileostomy formation after sphincter-preserving surgery. Patients with permanent stoma creation had a shorter tumour distance from the anal verge (P < 0.001), larger tumour size (P = 0.020) and higher preoperative Faecal Incontinence Severity Index score (P = 0.020). On multivariable analysis, tumour distance from the anal verge predicted permanent stoma formation (relative risk 0.53 per centimetre increase; 95% confidence interval 0.46-0.60; P < 0.001) but preoperative anal function did not. CONCLUSION: Tumour distance from the anal verge was the only preoperative determinant of permanent stoma creation in rectal cancer patients. These data may help mid and low rectal cancer patients understand the need for permanent stoma.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the association between Twitter exposure and the number of citations for coloproctology articles. METHOD: Original articles from journals using Twitter between June 2015 and May 2016 were evaluated for the following characteristics: publishing journal; article subject; study design; nationality, speciality and affiliation of the author(s); and reference on Twitter. Citation data for these articles were retrieved from Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com) in January 2018. We performed a univariate analysis using these data followed by a multivariate, logistic regression analysis to search for factors associated with a high citation level, which was defined as accrual of more than five citations. RESULTS: Out of six coloproctology journals listed on the InCites JCR database, three (Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, Colorectal Disease and Techniques in Coloproctology) used Twitter, where 200 (49.5%) out of a total of 404 articles had been featured. Citation rates of articles that featured on Twitter were significantly higher than those that did not (11.4 ± 9.2 vs 4.1 ± 3.1, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, Twitter exposure (OR 8.6, P = 0.001), European Union nationality (OR 2.4, P = 0.004), Colorectal Disease journal (OR 3.3, P = 0.005) and systematic review articles (OR 3.4, P = 0.009) were associated with higher citation levels. CONCLUSION: Article exposure on Twitter was strongly associated with a high citation level. Medical communities should encourage journals as well as physicians to actively utilize social media to expedite the spread of new ideas and ultimately benefit medical society as a whole.

AIM: To investigate the impacts of leader-member exchange and team-member exchange on job satisfaction and turnover intention of nurses. BACKGROUND: Leader-member exchange refers to the quality of relationships between leaders and members of a team and studies on this have generally focused on the aspect of member-leader-member exchanges. In nursing, the latter can refer to a situation where nurses (members) evaluate their relationship with their head nurse (leader). Member-leader-member exchange affects job satisfaction and turnover intention of nurses. However, even though all of these types of exchanges are important, few studies have examined their effects on job satisfaction and the turnover intention of nurses. METHODS: Participants in this descriptive study were 40 head nurses and 284 clinical nurses working at three hospitals in Korea. Data were collected from a questionnaire and analysed using hierarchical multiple regression. RESULTS: Leader-leader-member exchange, member-leader-member exchange, and team-member exchange had a positive effect on job satisfaction. However, only leader-leader-member exchange and member-leader-member exchange affected turnover intention. CONCLUSIONS: The impacts of leader-leader-member exchange, team-member exchange, and member-leader-member exchange on job satisfaction were confirmed. To reduce turnover intention, our study found it is more important to improve leader-member exchange than team-member exchange. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: In health organizations, there is an important need to focus on the communication and exchange relationships between leaders and their staff, well as among the members, to increase job satisfaction. This will assist leaders to play an important role in lowering nurses' turnover intention and create an organizational culture in which nurses can communicate well with them. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY: Policy changes are needed so that the components of job performance evaluation for nurse leaders also include attendance at regular programmes, such as training to improve their leadership and communication skills, and consultations with their staff members.

BACKGROUNDS AND AIMS: We aimed to reveal the association between subclinical inflammation and metabolic risk factors and to determine the difference in the association between normal-weight and obese Korean individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data collected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2015, conducted from January to December 2015, were analyzed. Overall, 4620 subjects were examined and divided into two subgroups: 2987 and 1633 subjects in the normal-weight and obese groups, respectively. The prevalence of obesity in the study population was 34.5% (n = 1633). After multivariate adjustment, impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (odds ratio [OR] 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.05-1.42, P = 0.010), high triglyceride (TG) levels (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.13-1.47, P < 0.001), and low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.31-1.64, P < 0.001) were significantly associated with increased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in the normal-weight group but not in the obesity group. CONCLUSION: Subclinical inflammation was associated with IFG, high TG levels, and low HDL-C levels in normal-weight Korean individuals. Prospective and biochemical research is necessary to clarify the role of subclinical systemic inflammation in individuals with normal body weight and its impact on insulin resistance and abnormal lipid metabolism, which promote the incidence of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Psychological aspect and quality of life should be considered in treating patients with psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: We sought to ascertain which clinical characteristics including presence of exposed lesions are associated with impairment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with psoriasis. METHODS: The EPI-PSODE study was a nationwide, multicenter, cross-sectional study conducted in Korea that included 1260 adult patients with psoriasis. In addition to clinical characteristics including presence of exposed lesions, data were collected using the Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) Screening and Evaluation (PASE), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), MOS 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Work Productivity and Activity Impairment Questionnaire Psoriasis (WPAI: PSO) and Medication Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ). RESULTS: Patients with a DLQI score > 5 (n = 990) were younger, had an earlier onset of psoriasis, scored higher on the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), had higher body surface area (BSA) and had higher PASE scores than patients with DLQI ≤ 5 (n = 266). The group of patients with exposed lesions (n = 871) were younger and male predominance, earlier onset of psoriasis, longer disease duration, higher PASI/BSA score and a higher proportion with drinking and smoking history each than the group of patients without exposed lesions (n = 389). Presence of exposed lesions negatively influenced DLQI, 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) (mental component), presenteeism, total work productivity impairment and total activity impairment in the WPAI: PSO. In multiple regression model, PASI score was the only variable which was significantly associated with all HRQoL measures. Presence of exposed lesions was a significant factor affecting DLQI and SF-36 (mental). CONCLUSION: The presence of exposed lesions has a negative impact on quality of life, mental health and work productivity. Therefore, effective treatments are particularly needed for psoriasis patients with exposed lesions.

Background: The influence of different head and neck positions on the effectiveness of ventilation with the air-Q® self-pressurizing airway remains unevaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different head and neck positions on ventilation with the air-Q® SP airway. Methods: In this prospective, randomized crossover study, we enrolled 51 female patients who were to undergo elective gynaecological or breast surgery under general anaesthesia. An air-Q® SP airway was placed in all patients, and mechanical ventilation was performed using a volume-controlled mode with a tidal volume of 10 ml kg−1 and a respiratory rate of 12 bpm. The expiratory tidal volume, peak inspiratory pressure, oropharyngeal leak pressure, and ventilation score were assessed first for the neutral head position and then for the extended, flexed, and rotated head positions in a random order. Results: All parameters were similar for the rotated head and neck position and the neutral position. Compared with the neutral position, the oropharyngeal leak pressure and peak inspiratory pressure decreased in the extended position but increased significantly in the flexed position (P<0.001). However, the expiratory tidal volume and ventilation score decreased significantly in only the extended position (P<0.001) but were similar in the flexed and neutral positions. Conclusions: Ventilation was not adversely affected in the rotated or flexed head and neck positions, whereas head and neck extension negatively influenced ventilation. Clinically, it is better to avoid head and neck extension during ventilation with an air-Q® SP airway. Clinical trial registration: NCT02402387.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether pain and pain-related unpleasantness ratings were altered by blood testosterone levels. We also investigated whether activation of brain regions that represent pain intensity [primary somatosensory cortex (S1)] and pain-related unpleasantness [perigenual ACC (pACC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC)] were affected by blood testosterone levels. METHODS: Twenty-six healthy men were recruited. Blood testosterone levels were measured before fMRI scanning. The participants were classified into two groups (high vs. low testosterone) according to their blood testosterone level (each group n = 13). The middle finger was immersed in a 50°C water bath (50°C, 30 s, five times) to induce identical noxious stimulation in all participants. RESULTS: The low testosterone group showed statistically significantly higher pain (P = 0.047), unpleasantness (P = 0.047), anxiety (P = 0.015), and fear ratings (P = 0.01) than the high testosterone group. Fear rating increased as pain rating rose and as testosterone level decreased (P < 0.001). When participants received noxious stimulation, the pACC and OFC were more highly activated in the low testosterone group compared to the high testosterone group. Activation of S1, a region related to pain intensity, did not differ between both groups. CONCLUSION: Compared to the high testosterone group, the low testosterone group had significant activation in the pACC and OFC, regions that represent pain-related unpleasantness, but not in S1 that represents pain intensity, leading to higher pain ratings. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the effects of testosterone levels when treating patients.

PURPOSE: Injection of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) is a novel method for the treatment of complex perianal fistulas. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ASCs in the treatment of complex anal fistulas not associated with Crohn's disease. METHODS: A phase II clinical trial was performed comparing two different doses of ASCs (group 1: 1 × 107 cells/mL and group 2: 2 × 107 cells/mL). Eligible patients were administered an amount of ASCs proportional to the length of the fistula by injection into the submucosal layer surrounding the internal opening and inside of the fistula tract. ASCs at twice the initial concentration were administered if complete closure was not achieved within 8 weeks. The efficacy endpoint was the complete closure of fistulas 8 weeks after injection. Patients demonstrating complete closure at week 8 were subjected to follow-up for 6 months. RESULTS: Fifteen patients were injected with ASCs; thirteen completed the study. Complete closure was observed in 69.2% (9/13) of patients at 8 weeks. Three of five patients in group 1, and six of eight in group 2 displayed complete closure; no significant differences were observed between the groups. Six of nine patients who showed complete closure participated in additional follow-up; five (83.3%) showed persistent response at 6 months. No grade 3 or 4 adverse events (AEs) were observed; observed AEs were not related to ASC treatment. CONCLUSION: ASCs might be a good option for the treatment of complex perianal fistulas are not healed by conventional operative procedures.

OBJECTIVES: Serous cystic neoplasm (SCN) is a cystic neoplasm of the pancreas whose natural history is poorly known. The purpose of the study was to attempt to describe the natural history of SCN, including the specific mortality. DESIGN: Retrospective multinational study including SCN diagnosed between 1990 and 2014. RESULTS: 2622 patients were included. Seventy-four per cent were women, and median age at diagnosis was 58â years (16-99). Patients presented with non-specific abdominal pain (27%), pancreaticobiliary symptoms (9%), diabetes mellitus (5%), other symptoms (4%) and/or were asymptomatic (61%). Fifty-two per cent of patients were operated on during the first year after diagnosis (median size: 40â mm (2-200)), 9% had resection beyond 1â year of follow-up (3â years (1-20), size at diagnosis: 25â mm (4-140)) and 39% had no surgery (3.6â years (1-23), 25.5â mm (1-200)). Surgical indications were (not exclusive) uncertain diagnosis (60%), symptoms (23%), size increase (12%), large size (6%) and adjacent organ compression (5%). In patients followed beyond 1â year (n=1271), size increased in 37% (growth rate: 4â mm/year), was stable in 57% and decreased in 6%. Three serous cystadenocarcinomas were recorded. Postoperative mortality was 0.6% (n=10), and SCN's related mortality was 0.1% (n=1). CONCLUSIONS: After a 3-year follow-up, clinical relevant symptoms occurred in a very small proportion of patients and size slowly increased in less than half. Surgical treatment should be proposed only for diagnosis remaining uncertain after complete workup, significant and related symptoms or exceptionally when exists concern with malignancy. This study supports an initial conservative management in the majority of patients with SCN. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: IRB 00006477.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effect of magnesium sulphate on increased pain in 44 patients undergoing staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: The magnesium group (n=22) and the control group (n=22) received magnesium sulphate and isotonic saline, respectively, throughout the surgery. Postoperative pain (visual analogue scale, VAS) at rest and the amounts of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA, fentanyl) and rescue analgesia (ketoprofen) administered during the first 48 h were compared between the two groups and within each group between the first and second TKA. RESULTS: The VAS scores were significantly higher in the control group than in the magnesium group not only after the first TKA [29 (11) vs 19 (9) at 24 h and 33 (8) vs 24 (10) at 48 h; P=0.001] but also after the second TKA [44 (17) vs 20 (10) at 24 h and 43 (14) vs 25 (10) at 48 h; P<0.001]. In the control group, VAS scores were significantly higher for the second than for the first operated knee [44 (17) vs 29 (11) at 24 h and 43 (14) vs 33 (8) at 48 h; P<0.001 and P=0.006, respectively]. In the magnesium group, there were no significant differences in VAS scores between the first and second TKA. Magnesium significantly reduced the amounts of rescue analgesics and fentanyl administered over the first 48 h postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Magnesium sulphate administration significantly reduced postoperative pain and minimized the difference in pain intensity between the first and second operations. BACKGROUND: We hypothesize that pain and brain responses are affected by changes in the presentation sequence of noxious stimuli that are, overall, identical in intensity and duration. METHODS: During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning, 21 participants experienced three patterns of noxious stimulation: Up-type (step-up noxious stimulation, 15 s), Down-type (step-down noxious stimulation, 15 s), and Down-up-type (decreasing and increasing pattern of noxious stimulation, 15 s). The total intensity and duration of the three noxious stimulation patterns were identical, but the stimulation sequences were different. RESULTS: Pain and unpleasantness ratings in the Down- and Down-up-type noxious stimulations were lower than in the Up-type noxious stimulation. The left prefrontal cortex [(PFC, BA (Brodmann area) 10, (-45, 50, 1)] was more highly activated in the Down- and Down-up-type noxious stimulations than in the Up-type noxious stimulation. The S1, S2, insula, bilateral PFC (BA 46), and midcingulate cortex were more highly activated in the Up-type noxious stimulation than in the Down-type noxious stimulation. PFC BA 10 was located at an inferior level compared to the bilateral PFC BA 46 (Z axis = 1 for BA 10, compared to 22 and 25 for the right and left BA 46, respectively). When cortisol level was increased, the left hippocampal cortex, along with the left parahippocampal cortex, was greatly activated for the Up-type noxious stimulation. CONCLUSION: When pain cannot be avoided in clinical practice, noxious stimuli should be applied to patients in a step-down pattern that delivers the most intense pain first and the least intense pain last.

A Ho:YAG ceramic microchip laser pumped by a Tm fiber laser at 1910 nm is passively Q-switched by single- and multi-layer graphene, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and Cr2+:ZnSe saturable absorbers (SAs). Employing SWCNTs, this laser generated an average power of 810 mW at 2090 nm with a slope efficiency of 68% and continuous wave to Q-switching conversion efficiency of 70%. The shortest pulse duration was 85 ns at a repetition rate of 165 kHz, and the pulse energy reached 4.9 µJ. The laser performance and pulse stability were superior compared to graphene SAs even for a different number of graphene layers (n=1 to 4). A model for the description of the Ho:YAG laser Q-switched by carbon nanostructures is presented. This modeling allowed us to estimate the saturation intensity for multi-layered graphene and SWCNT SAs to be 1.2±0.2 and 7±1 MW/cm2, respectively. When using Cr2+:ZnSe, the Ho:YAG microchip laser generated 11 ns/25 µJ pulses at a repetition rate of 14.8 kHz.

This study aimed to assess the association between caudal block and postoperative complications after tubularised incised plate urethroplasty. The medical records of 388 paediatric patients who underwent urethroplasty at a tertiary medical centre were analysed retrospectively. Among the 342 patients included, 216 patients received a caudal block and 72 (21.1%) patients suffered surgical complications. The number of patients having surgical complications was significantly greater among patients who received a caudal block than among patients who did not receive a caudal block (53 (24.5%) versus 19 (15.1%), respectively, p = 0.04). Based on multivariate logistic regression analysis, duration of surgery, caudal block and hypospadias types were independent risk factors for the surgical complications. Patients with caudal block had an odds ratio of 2.1 (95% CI, 1.14-3.81, p = 0.018) for the development of postoperative complications compared with patients without caudal block. This analysis demonstrates that caudal block is associated with surgical complications after tubularised incised plate urethroplasty.

UNLABELLED: Sarcopenia is the age-related reduction of skeletal muscle mass in older individuals. Respiratory muscle strength may be related to skeletal muscle mass and, thus, the present study attempted to estimate the risk of sarcopenia relative to decreased pulmonary function. The present findings demonstrated that low pulmonary function was associated with low muscle mass in community-dwelling older adults. INTRODUCTION: Lean body mass is related to pulmonary function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the relationship between muscle mass and pulmonary function in healthy older adults has yet to be clarified. Thus, the present study investigated the association of pulmonary function with muscle mass in an older community-dwelling Korean population. METHODS: This study included 463 disease-free subjects over 65 years of age who underwent anthropometric measurements, laboratory tests, spirometry, and the estimation of appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) mass in the 2008-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Low muscle mass was defined as the value of ASM divided by height squared (ASM/height(2)) that was less than two standard deviations (SD) below the sex-specific mean of the young reference group. RESULTS: Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1[L]) and forced vital capacity (FVC[L]) were positively correlated with ASM/height(2) in males (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively) but not in females (p = 0.360 and p = 0.779, respectively). A univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that males with low FEV1 or FVC were more likely to have low muscle mass (odds ratio [OR] = 3.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.62-5.99 for FEV1; OR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.13-3.53 for FVC); similar results were found for females, but the significance was lower (OR = 11.37, 95% CI 0.97-132.91 for FEV1; OR = 7.31, 95% CI 1.25-42.74 for FVC). After adjusting for age, smoking, and moderate physical activity, a low FEV1 value was associated with low muscle mass in both males (OR = 2.90, 95% CI 1.50-5.63) and females (OR = 9.15, 95% CI 1.53-54.77). CONCLUSIONS: Using nationally representative data from the 2008-2011 KNHANES, low pulmonary function was found to be associated with low muscle mass in community-dwelling older Korean adults.

The energy spacing between the spin-doublet bound state of _{Λ}^{4}He(1^{+},0^{+}) was determined to be 1406±2±2 keV, by measuring γ rays for the 1^{+}â0^{+} transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the ^{4}He(K^{-},π^{-})_{Λ}^{4}He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus _{Λ}^{4}H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in ΛN interaction. By combining the energy spacings with the known ground-state binding energies, it is also found that the CSB effect is large in the 0^{+} ground state but is vanishingly small in the 1^{+} excited state, demonstrating that the ΛN CSB interaction has spin dependence.

Clinical prediction indicators such as the pneumonia severity index (PSI) and CURB-65 score are useful, but they are complex and often not followed. Therefore, biomarkers that improve hospital outcome predictions are emerging. This study evaluated the prognostic value of a new sepsis biomarker, serum lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) concentrations, in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients. We prospectively collected blood samples from emergency department CAP patients on days 1 and 7 (post-admission) and analyzed their plasma LPC concentrations. We retrospectively reviewed patient medical records and analyzed correlations between plasma LPC concentrations and clinical parameters and hospital outcomes. A total of 56 CAP patients were included in this study; 24 (42.9 %) required intubation and 15 (26.8 %) died. The mean LPC concentrations on days 1 (p = 0.015) and 7 (p = 0.002) of hospitalization were significantly lower in the non-survivors. Day 1 LPC concentrations were inversely correlated with the PSI (ρ = -269) and CURB-65 scores (ρ = -386). For predicting hospital mortality, the day 1 LPC concentration was comparable with the CURB-65 or PSI scores. Day 1 LPC cut-off levels <29.6 µmol/L were associated with hospital CAP outcomes, including the need for mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, intensive care unit admission, and hospital mortality. Additionally, day 7 LPC concentrations were correlated with in-hospital mortality. Initial serum LPC concentrations predicted hospital outcomes in CAP patients requiring hospitalization. These values were correlated with prognostic markers, such as the PSI and CURB-65 scores. Additionally, follow-up LPC measurements predicted the clinical course of CAP patients.

BACKGROUND: Hair is known to persist on the occipital and part of the temporal scalp in patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), but no quantified data about the follicular changes in such areas exist. AIM: To evaluate the hair characteristics in nonbalding scalp areas in East Asian patients with AGA. METHODS: In total, 265 participants [211 patients with AGA and 50 healthy controls (HCs)] were enrolled. The patients were divided by the Basic and Specific (BASP) classification [four basic types (L, M, C, and U) and two special types (V and F)], and the hair in the occipital region and two sites of the temporal region were analysed by computer-assisted phototrichography. Hair density, hair width, number of each follicular unit, ratio of single to compound hairs and ratio of terminal to vellus hairs were examined. RESULTS: In the temporal region, a statistically significant (P < 0.05) decrease in hair density was observed in patients with C, U or F subtypes, and a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in hair thickness was observed in patients with the U subtype compared with HCs. In the mastoid and occipital areas, both hair density and hair thickness was significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in patients with the U subtype compared with HCs. Within each classification, hairs became generally thinner as the hair loss progressed. CONCLUSIONS: Hair density and hair thickness of known nonbalding scalp regions showed some differences depending on the severity and the BASP subtypes in East Asian people with male pattern baldness.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we sought to identify a criterion for the intermediate-risk grouping of patients with cervical cancer who exhibit any intermediate-risk factor after radical hysterectomy. METHODS: In total, 2158 patients with pathologically proven stage IB-IIA cervical cancer with any intermediate-risk factor after radical hysterectomy were randomly assigned to two groups, a development group and a validation group, at a ratio of 3 : 1 (1620 patients:538 patients). To predict recurrence, multivariate models were developed using the development group. The ability of the models to discriminate between groups was validated using the log-rank test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: Four factors (histology, tumour size, deep stromal invasion (DSI), and lymphovascular space involvement (LVSI)) were significantly associated with disease recurrence and included in the models. Among the nine possible combinations of the four variables, models consisting of any two of the four intermediate-risk factors (tumour size ≥3 cm, DSI of the outer third of the cervix, LVSI, and adenocarcinoma or adenosquamous carcinoma histology) demonstrated the best performance for predicting recurrence. CONCLUSION: This study identified a 'four-factor model' in which the presence of any two factors may be useful for predicting recurrence in patients with cervical cancer treated with radical hysterectomy.
