RESUMEN

Lipid biosynthesis is recently studied its functions in a range of cellular physiology including differentiation and regeneration. However, it still remains to be elucidated in its precise function. To reveal this, we evaluated the roles of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) signaling in alveolar bone formation using the LPA type 2 receptor (LPAR2) antagonist AMG-35 (Amgen Compound 35) using tooth loss without periodontal disease model which would be caused by trauma and usually requires a dental implant to restore masticatory function. In this study, in vitro cell culture experiments in osteoblasts and periodontal ligament fibroblasts revealed cell type-specific responses, with AMG-35 modulating osteogenic differentiation in osteoblasts in vitro. To confirm the in vivo results, we employed a mouse model of tooth loss without periodontal disease. Five to 10 days after tooth extraction, AMG-35 facilitated bone formation in the tooth root socket as measured by immunohistochemistry for differentiation markers KI67, Osteocalcin, Periostin, RUNX2, transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1) and SMAD2/3. The increased expression and the localization of these proteins suggest that AMG-35 elicits osteoblast differentiation through TGF-ß1 and SMAD2/3 signaling. These results indicate that LPAR2/TGF-ß1/SMAD2/3 represents a new signaling pathway in alveolar bone formation and that local application of AMG-35 in traumatic tooth loss can be used to facilitate bone regeneration and healing for further clinical treatment.

Glomerular epithelial protein-1 (Glepp1), a R3 subtype family of receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatases, plays important role in the activation of Src family kinases and regulates cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. In this study, we firstly examined the functional evaluation of Glepp1 in tooth development and morphogenesis. The precise expression level and developmental function of Glepp1 were examined by RT-qPCR, in situ hybridization, and loss and gain of functional study using a range of in vitro organ cultivation methods. Expression of Glepp1 was detected in the developing tooth germs in cap and bell stage of tooth development. Knocking down Glepp1 at E13 for 2 days showed the altered expression levels of tooth development-related signaling molecules, including Bmps, Dspp, Fgf4, Lef1, and Shh. Moreover, transient knock down of Glepp1 revealed alterations in cellular physiology, examined by the localization patterns of Ki67 and E-cadherin. Similarly, knocking down of Glepp1 showed disrupted enamel rod and interrod formation in 3-week renal transplanted teeth. In addition, due to attrition of odontoblastic layers, the expression signals of Dspp and the localization of NESTIN were almost not detected after knock down of Glepp1; however, their expressions were increased after Glepp1 overexpression. Thus, our results suggested that Glepp1 plays modulating roles during odontogenesis by regulating the expression levels of signaling molecules and cellular events to achieve the proper structural formation of hard tissue matrices in mice molar development.

We studied the phase change and resistive switching characteristics of copper oxide (CuxO) films through post-thermal annealing. This investigation aimed to assess the material's potential for a variety of electrical devices, exploring its versatility in electronic applications. The CuxO films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering were annealed at 300, 500, and 700 °C in ambient air for 4 min by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) method, and then it was confirmed that the structural phase change from Cu2O to CuO occurred with increasing annealing temperature. Resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) devices with Au/CuxO/p+-Si structures were fabricated, and the ReRAM properties appeared in CuO-based devices, while Cu2O ReRAM devices did not exhibit resistive switching behavior. The CuO ReRAM device annealed at 500 °C showed the best properties, with a on/off ratio of 8 × 102, good switching endurance of ∼100 cycles, data retention for 104s, and stable uniformity in the cumulative probability distribution. This characteristic change could be explained by the difference in the grain size and density of defects between the Cu2O and CuO films. These results demonstrate that superior and stable resistive switching properties of RF-sputtered CuxO films can be obtained by low-temperature RTA.

Despite the extensive global consumption of architectural paint, the toxicological effects of aged exterior paint particles on terrestrial biota remain largely uncharacterized. Herein, we assessed the toxic effect of aged paint particles on soil environments using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a test organism. Various types of paint particles were generated by fragmentation and sequential sieving (500-1000, 250-500, 100-250, 50-100, 20-50 µm) of paint coatings collected from two old residential areas. The paint particles exerted different levels of toxicity, as indicated by a reduction in the number of C. elegans offspring, depending on their size, color, and layer structure. These physical characteristics were found to be closely associated with the chemical heterogeneity of additives present in the paint particles. Since the paint particle sizes were larger than what C. elegans typically consume, we attributed the toxicity to leachable additives present in the paint particles. To assess the toxicity of these leachable additives, we performed sequential washings of the paint particles with distilled water and ethanol. Ethanol washing of the paint particles significantly reduced the soil toxicity of the hydrophobic additives, indicating their potential environmental risk. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the ethanol leachate revealed the presence of alkyl amines, which exhibited a high correlation with the toxicity of the paint particles. Further toxicity testing using an alkyl amine standard demonstrated that a paint particle concentration of 1.2% in soil could significantly reduce the number of C. elegans offspring. Our findings provide insights into the potential hazards posed by aged paint particles and their leachable additives in the terrestrial environment.

PURPOSE: Studies on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are scarce in adults with epilepsy. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for ADHD and determine whether ADHD is directly associated with the risk of suicide in adults with epilepsy. METHODS: ADHD was assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 Disorders Clinical Version. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) Plus 5.0.0, Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDIE), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were also used. Suicide risk was defined as a MINI suicidality score of ≥ 1. Stepwise logistic regression and mediation analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Of the 157 adults with epilepsy, 19 (12.1 %) were diagnosed with ADHD, including inattentive (5.7 %), hyperactive (3.8 %), and combined (2.5 %) types. Thirty-two subjects (20.4 %) had a risk of suicide. ADHD was insignificantly associated with any epilepsy-related factors. The diagnosis of ADHD was not associated with suicide risk independent of NDDIE ≥ 14 and GAD-7 ≥ 7. Mediation effects of ADHD on suicidality using NDDIE ≥ 14 (odds ratio [OR] 2.850, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.398-5.811, p = 0.004) or GAD-7 ≥ 7 (OR 3.240, 95 % CI 1.537-6.828, p = 0.002) were statistically significant, with the proportion mediated being 84.5 % or 92.0 % of the total ADHD effect, respectively. These models were adjusted for age, sex, and composite epilepsy severity scores. CONCLUSIONS: ADHD was diagnosed in 12.1% of adults with epilepsy and was not associated with any epilepsy-related factors. ADHD was indirectly associated with the risk of suicide resulting from depression and anxiety in adults with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if insomnia-related factors differ depending on the presence of depression in patients with epilepsy. METHODS: This cross-sectional multicenter study collected data on depressive symptoms, insomnia symptoms, and excessive daytime sleepiness, which were defined as a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score of ≥ 10, an Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) score of ≥ 15, and an Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) of ≥ 11, respectively. Further, uncontrolled seizures were defined as one or more seizures per month during antiseizure medications treatment. A stepwise logistic regression analysis was conducted, with a logistic regression with interaction terms performed to identify differences in insomnia-related factors depending on depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Of 282 adults with epilepsy (men, 58 %; mean age, 40.4 ± 13.9 years), a PHQ-9 score ≥ 10, an ISI score ≥ 15, an ESS score ≥ 11 were noted in 23.4 % (n = 66), 20.2 % (n = 57), and 12.8 % (n = 36), respectively. More patients with depressive symptoms had an ISI score ≥ 15 (56.1 % vs. 9.3 %; p < 0.001) than those without. In multiple logistic regression, uncontrolled seizures (odds ratio [OR], 4.896; p < 0.01), daytime sleepiness (OR, 5.369; p < 0.05), and a history of psychiatric disorders (OR, 3.971; p < 0.05) were identified as significant factors that were more likely to be associated with an ISI score ≥ 15; however, this was only true in patients without depressive symptoms. In contrast, use of perampanel (OR, 0.282; p < 0.05) was less likely associated, while female sex (OR, 3.178; p < 0.05) was more likely associated with an ISI score ≥ 15 only in patients with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Insomnia-related factors in patients with epilepsy may differ between patients with and without depression. Our findings of different insomnia-related factors based on the presence of depression may facilitate the management of patients with epilepsy.

Scopoletin, a coumarin class natural phytoalexin, is present in medicinal plants such as noni (Morinda citrifolia). It exhibits diverse pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-hyperuricemic, and anti-inflammatory effects. The objective of this study was to develop a novel HPLC-fluorescence (HPLC-FL) method for the quantitative analysis of scopoletin in the plasma and to investigate its pharmacokinetics in rats. Sample preparation involved a methanol-based protein precipitation method, and chromatographic separation was conducted using a C18 column with an isocratic mobile phase composed of water and acetonitrile containing 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid. The eluent was detected using an FL detector set to optimized excitation/emission wavelengths of 337/453 nm. Method validation encompassed assessments of selectivity, linearity (1-500 ng/mL), precision, accuracy, recovery, matrix effect, and stability in accordance with the prevailing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. The developed method was successfully applied for pharmacokinetic study in rats. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first application of a simple and sensitive HPLC-FL method for the quantification of scopoletin in a pharmacokinetic study. This method offers a promising alternative for preclinical pharmacokinetic investigations with appropriate modifications and validations and holds potential for clinical applications.

In the realm of two-dimensional (2D) crystal growth, the chemical composition often determines the thermodynamically favored crystallographic structures. This relationship poses a challenge in synthesizing novel 2D crystals without altering their chemical elements, resulting in the rarity of achieving specific crystallographic symmetries or lattice parameters. We present 2D polymorphic FeAs crystals that completely differ from bulk orthorhombic FeAs (Pnma), differing in the stacking sequence, i.e., polytypes. Preparing polytypic FeAs outlines a strategy for independently controlling each symmetry operator, which includes the mirror plane for 2Q-FeAs (I4/mmm) and the glide plane for 1Q-FeAs (P4/nmm). As such, compared to bulk FeAs, polytypic 2D FeAs shows highly anisotropic properties such as electrical conductivity, Young's modulus, and friction coefficient. This work represents a concept of expanding 2D crystal libraries with a given chemical composition but various crystal symmetries.

Nymphoides peltata has been used as a medicinal herb in traditional medicines to treat strangury, polyuria, and swelling. The phytochemical investigation of the MeOH extract of N. peltata roots led to the isolation of three iridoid glycosides and three coumarin glycoside derivatives, which were characterized as menthiafolin (1), threoninosecologanin (2), callicoside C (3), and scopolin (4), as well as two undescribed peltatamarins A (5) and B (6). The chemical structures of the undescribed compounds were determined by analyzing their 1 dimensional (D) and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and using high-resolution (HR)-electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), along with the chemical reaction of acid hydrolysis. The wound healing activities of the isolated compounds 1-6 were evaluated using a HaCaT cell scratch test. Among the isolates, scopolin (4) and peltatamarin A (5) promoted HaCaT cell migration over scratch wounds, and compound 5 was the most effective. Furthermore, compound 5 significantly promoted cell migration without adversely affecting cell proliferation, even when treated at a high dose (100 µM). Our results demonstrate that peltatamarin A (5), isolated from N. peltata roots, has the potential for wound healing effects.

Plastic pollution is becoming increasingly severe and is attracting global attention. One of its consequences is the recent discovery of micropollutant discharge into water, with Bisphenol A (BA-MP) being a typical example. This study utilizes an advanced oxidation process based on Pt-doped ZnO photocatalyst to remove BA-MP. Health concerns related to the release of BA-MP from plastic waste are discussed. Besides, the results of the photodegradation experiment show that the Pt-ZnO photocatalyst can remove 94.1% of BA-MP within 60 min when exposed to solar light. Moreover, after five reuse cycles, Pt-ZnO retains a high BA-MP removal efficiency of 71.2%, and its structure remains largely unchanged compared to the original material. The removal efficiency of BA-MP leaching from plastic waste was measured at 98.8%, confirming the suitability of Pt-ZnO for the treatment of micropollutants. Furthermore, this study also highlights the prospects and challenges of using Pt-ZnO for the treatment of micropollutants discharged from plastic waste.

Introduction: Basicervical femoral neck fracture (FNF) is an uncommon type of femoral neck fracture and is associated with an increased risk of fixation failure due to its inherent instability. The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical parameters and reoperation rate between the use of a multiple cannulated screw (MCS) and fixed angle device (FAD) in treating basicervical FNFs. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 885 patients who underwent internal fixation between May 2004 and August 2019 to determine basicervical FNF with at least 12 months of follow-up. Among the identified 77 patients with basicervical FNF, 17 patients who underwent multiple cannulated screw (MCS) fixation and 36 patients who underwent fixed angle device (FAD) fixation were included. We compared the rates of fracture-site collapse and reoperations according to the fixation device. Results: Among the 53 patients with basicervical FNF, 13 patients (24.5%) sustained surgical complications (8 collapses of fracture site and 5 reoperations). The reoperation rate in the MCS group was significantly higher than that in the FAD group (23.5% vs. 2.8%, p = 0.016), without any significant difference in the collapse of the fracture site (11.8% vs. 16.7%, p = 0.642). Conclusions: Although basicervical FNF was rare among hip fractures, fracture site collapse was prevalent and prone to fixation failure. Surgeons should keep this in mind, and consider FAD for basicervical FNF.

To understand the mechanisms underlying tooth morphogenesis, we examined the developmental roles of important posttranslational modification, O-GlcNAcylation, which regulates protein stability and activity by the addition and removal of a single sugar (O-GlcNAc) to the serine or threonine residue of the intracellular proteins. Tissue and developmental stage-specific immunostaining results against O-GlcNAc and O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) in developing tooth germs would suggest that O-GlcNAcylation is involved in tooth morphogenesis, particularly in the cap and secretory stage. To evaluate the developmental function of OGT-mediated O-GlcNAcylation, we employed an in vitro tooth germ culture method at E14.5, cap stage before secretory stage, for 1 and 2 days, with or without OSMI-1, a small molecule OGT inhibitor. To examine the mineralization levels and morphological changes, we performed renal capsule transplantation for one and three weeks after 2 days of in vitro culture at E14.5 with OSMI-1 treatment. After OGT inhibition, morphological and molecular alterations were examined using histology, immunohistochemistry, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, scanning electron microscopy, and ground sectioning. Overall, inhibition of OGT resulted in altered cellular physiology, including proliferation, apoptosis, and epithelial rearrangements, with significant changes in the expression patterns of ß-catenin, fibroblast growth factor 4 (fgf4), and sonic hedgehog (Shh). Moreover, renal capsule transplantation and immunolocalizations of Amelogenin and Nestin results revealed that OGT-inhibited tooth germs at cap stage exhibited with structural changes in cuspal morphogenesis, amelogenesis, and dentinogenesis of the mineralized tooth. Overall, we suggest that OGT-mediated O-GlcNAcylation regulates cell signaling and physiology in primary enamel knot during tooth development, thus playing an important role in mouse molar morphogenesis.

Nanostructured silicon with an equilibrium shape has exhibited hydrogen evolution reaction activity mainly owing to its high surface area, which is distinct from that of bulk silicon. Such a Wulff shape of silicon favors low-surface-energy planes, resulting in silicon being an anisotropic and predictably faceted solid in which certain planes are favored, but this limits further improvement of the catalytic activity. Here, we introduce nanoporous silicon nanosheets that possess high-surface-energy crystal planes, leading to an unconventional Wulff shape that bolsters the catalytic activity. The high-index plane, uncommonly seen in the Wulff shape of bulk Si, has a band structure optimally aligned with the redox potential necessary for hydrogen generation, resulting in an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 12.1% at a 400 nm wavelength. The enhanced light absorption in nanoporous silicon nanosheets also contributes to the high photocatalytic activity. Collectively, the strategy of making crystals with nontypical Wulff shapes can provide a route toward various classes of photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

We report a case of occupational monkeypox virus infection from a needlestick injury in a healthcare worker in South Korea and review similar reports in the literature during 2022. Postexposure prophylactic treatment with a third-generation smallpox vaccine and antiviral agent tecovirimat inhibited local virus spread and alleviated lesion pain.

Mechanically activated factors are important in organogenesis, especially in the formation of secretory organs, such as salivary glands. Piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1), although previously studied as a physical modulator of the mechanotransduction, was firstly evaluated on its developmental function in this study. The detailed localization and expression pattern of Piezo1 during mouse submandibular gland (SMG) development were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR, respectively. The specific expression pattern of Piezo1 was examined in acinar-forming epithelial cells at embryonic day 14 (E14) and E16, which are important developmental stages for acinar cell differentiation. To understand the precise function of Piezo1 in SMG development, siRNA against Piezo1 (siPiezo1) was employed as a loss-of-function approach, during in vitro organ cultivation of SMG at E14 for the designated period. Alterations in the histomorphology and expression patterns of related signaling molecules, including Bmp2, Fgf4, Fgf10, Gli1, Gli3, Ptch1, Shh, and Tgfß-3, were examined in acinar-forming cells after 1 and 2 days of cultivation. Particularly, altered localization patterns of differentiation-related signaling molecules including Aquaporin5, E-cadherin, Vimentin, and cytokeratins would suggest that Piezo1 modulates the early differentiation of acinar cells in SMGs by modulating the Shh signaling pathway.

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water has emerged as a significant public health concern due to their potential adverse impacts, including the development of antibiotic resistance. Consequently, advanced oxidation processes based on photocatalysis have garnered considerable attention for treating pharmaceutical contaminants in wastewater. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN), a metal-free photocatalyst, was synthesized by the polymerization of melamine and assessed as a potential candidate for the photodegradation of acetaminophen (AP) and carbamazepine (CZ) in wastewater. Under alkaline conditions, g-CN demonstrated high removal efficiencies of 98.6% and 89.5% for AP and CZ, respectively. The relationships between degradation efficiency and catalyst dosage, initial pharmaceutical concentration, and photodegradation kinetics were investigated. Increasing the catalyst dose facilitated the removal of antibiotic contaminants, with an optimum catalyst dose of 0.1 g, achieving a photodegradation efficiency of 90.2% and 82.7% for AP and CZ, respectively. The synthesized photocatalyst removed over 98% of AP (1 mg/L) within 120 min, with a rate constant of 0.0321 min-1, 2.14 times faster than that of CZ. Quenching experiments revealed that g-CN was active under solar light and generated highly reactive oxidants such as hydroxyl (•OH) and superoxide (•O2-). The reuse test confirmed the good stability of g-CN for treating pharmaceuticals during three repeated cycles. Finally, the photodegradation mechanism and environmental impacts were discussed. This study presents a promising approach for treating and mitigating pharmaceutical contaminants in wastewater.

Caffeine (CaF), a widely consumed compound, has been associated with various harmful effects on human health, including metabolic, cardiovascular disease, and reproductive disorders. Moreover, it poses a signifincant threat to organisms and aquatic ecosystems, leading to water pollution concerns. Therefore, the removal of CaF from wastewater is crucial for mitigating water pollution and minimizing its detrimental impacts on both humans and the environment. In this study, a solar-driven Cu-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Cu/CN) photocatalyst was synthesized and evaluated for its effectiveness in oxidizing CaF in wastewater. The Cu/CN photocatalyst, with a low band gap energy of 2.58eV, exhibited superior performance in degrading CaF compared to pure graphitic carbon nitride (CN). Under solar light irradiation, CuCN achieved a remarkable CaF degradation efficiency of 98.7% CaF, surpassing CN's efficiency of 74.5% by 24.2%. The synthesized Cu/CN photocatalyst demonstrated excellent removal capability, achieving a removal rate of over 88% for CaF in wastewater. Moreover, the reusability test showed that Cu/CN could be successfully reused up to five cycles maintaining a high removal efficiency of 74% for CaF in the fifth cycle. Additionally, the study elucidated the oxidation mechanism of CaF using solar-driven Cu/CN photocatalyst and highlighted the environmental implications of the process.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the Korean Hip Fracture Registry (KHFR) Study is to establish a nationwide, hospital-based prospective cohort study of adults with hip fracture to explore the incidence and risk factors of second osteoporotic fractures for a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) model. METHODS: The KHFR, a prospective multicenter longitudinal study, was launched in 2014. Sixteen centers recruited participants who were treated for hip fracture. The inclusion criteria were patients, who were treated for proximal femur fracture due to low-energy trauma and aged 50 or more at the time of injury. Until 2018, 5,841 patients were enrolled in this study. Follow-up surveys were conducted annually to determine occurrence of second osteoporotic fracture, and 4,803 participants completed at least one follow-up survey. DISCUSSION: KHFR is a unique resource of individual level on osteoporotic hip fracture with radiological, medical, and laboratory information including DXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry), bone turnover marker, body composition, and hand grip strength for future analyses for FLS model. Modifiable factors for mortality after hip surgery is planned to be identified with nutritional assessment and multi-disciplinary interventions from hospitalization to follow-ups. The proportions of femoral neck, intertrochanteric, and subtrochanteric fractures were 517 (42.0%), 730 (53.6%), and 60 (4.4%), respectively, from 2014 to 2016, which was similar in other studies. Radiologic definition of atypical subtrochanteric fracture was adopted and 17 (1.2%) fractures among 1,361 proximal femoral fractures were identified. Internal fixation showed higher reoperation rate compared to arthroplasty in unstable intertrochanteric fractures (6.1% vs. 2.4%, p = 0.046) with no significant difference in mortality. The KHFR plans to identify outcomes and risk factors associated with second fracture by conducting a 10-year cohort study, with a follow-up every year, using 5,841 baseline participants. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Present study was registered on Internet-based Clinical Research and Trial management system (iCReaT) as multicenter prospective observational cohort study (Project number: C160022, Date of registration: 22th, Apr, 2016).

Oral cancer is a malignant neoplasm of oral cavity. It accounts for approximately 5% of all malignant tumors. Approximately 97% of all oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, followed by adenocarcinomas, and rarely malignant melanomas. It occurs particularly in males (twice as common in males than in females) of middle age (above 40 years). Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. has traditionally been known for its effective antitumor activity and is currently used in China for cancer therapy. A. pilosa Ledeb. has been traditionally used for the treatment of abdominal pain, sore throat, headache, blood discharge, parasitic infections, and eczema in Korea and other Asian countries. Most studies on A. pilosa Ledeb. are related to the leaves and a few investigated the roots of the plant. However, detailed mechanisms of antitumor activity of A. pilosa Ledeb. have not been fully elucidated. Furthermore, to date, there have been no reports on the antitumor effect of A. pilosa Ledeb. in oral squamous cells. In this study, we used proteomic technology to observe changes in proteins related to anticancer activity of A. pilosa Ledeb. and identified target proteins among altered proteins to reveal the underlying mechanism of action.

LiS batteries with high theoretical capacity are attracting attention as next-generation energy storage systems. Much effort has been devoted to the introduction of cathode materials with strong adsorption to sulfide species, but it is presented that this selection should be refined in the application of high donicity electrolytes. The oxides with different adsorption capacities are explored while controlling the electrolyte donicity, confirming the trade-off effect between the donicity and the adsorption capacity for sulfur conversion. Specifically, a cathode substrate containing oxide nanoparticles of MgO, NiO, Fe2 O3 , Co3 O4 , and V2 O5 is prepared with spectra in adsorption capacity as well as low and high donicity electrolytes by controlling the concentration of LiNO3 salt. Strong adsorbent oxides such as Co3 O4 and V2 O5 cause competitive adsorption of electrolyte salts in high donicity electrolytes, resulting in poor cell performance. High cell performance is achieved on weakly adsorbing oxides of MgO or NiO with high donicity electrolytes; the MgO-containing cathode cell delivers a high discharge capacity of 1394 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C. It is believed that understanding the interactions between electrolytes and adsorbent substrates will be the cornerstone of high-performance LiS batteries.
