Having good moral character often involves shifting one's focus of attention from the self to others and the world. Across three studies (N = 605 adults), we found converging evidence that self-transcendent experiences, specifically awe and flow, enabled the expression of wisdom, as captured by wise reasoning and epistemic humility measures. Study 1 found that dispositionally awe- and flow-prone people have stronger wise reasoning and epistemic humility abilities, over and above dispositional happiness. Consistent with Study 1, Study 2 found that, across diverse recalled experiences, individuals who experienced more awe showed greater wise reasoning, and those who experienced more flow showed greater epistemic humility. In Study 3, using situated interventions, we induced awe (watching a video involving vast nature scenes) and flow (composing a song using an online music maker) and compared them with neutral and amusement experiences. Compared to these control conditions, eliciting awe and flow facilitated one's (1) ability to address interpersonal conflicts with wise reasoning, (2) ability to acknowledge one's epistemic gaps, and (3) willingness to improve those aspects and one's general moral character. Altogether, these findings reveal the promising role of self-transcendent experiences in motivating people to appreciate others' perspectives beyond one's own.

Facial expressions are key to navigating social group life. The Power Asymmetry Hypothesis of Motivational Emancipation predicts that the type of social organization shapes the meaning of communicative displays in relation to an individual's dominance rank. The bared-teeth (BT) display represents one of the most widely observed communicative signals across primate species. Studies in macaques indicate that the BT display in despotic species is often performed unidirectionally, from low- to high-ranking individuals (signaling submission), whereas the BT display in egalitarian species is usually produced irrespective of dominance (mainly signaling affiliation and appeasement). Despite its widespread presence, research connecting BT displays to the power asymmetry hypothesis outside the Macaca genus remains scarce. To extend this knowledge, we investigated the production of BT in relation to social dominance in dyadic interactions (N = 11,377 events) of 11 captive bonobos (Pan paniscus). Although adult bonobos were more despotic than previously suggested in the literature, BT displays were produced irrespective of dominance rank. Moreover, while adults produced the BT exclusively during socio-sexual interactions, especially during periods of social tension, immature bonobos produced the BT in a wider number of contexts. As such, the results indicate that the communicative meaning of the BT display is consistent with signaling appeasement, especially in periods of social tension. Moreover, the BT display does not seem to signal social status, supporting the prediction for species with a high degree of social tolerance. These results advance our understanding of the origins of communicative signals and their relation to species' social systems.

Osteoporosis is commonly treated via the long-term usage of anti-osteoporotic agents; however, poor drug compliance and undesirable side effects limit their treatment efficacy. The parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is essential for normal bone formation and remodeling; thus, may be used as an anti-osteoporotic agent. Here, we developed a platform for the delivery of a single peptide composed of two regions of the PTHrP protein (1-34 and 107-139); mcPTHrP 1-34+107-139 using a minicircle vector. We also transfected mcPTHrP 1-34+107-139 into human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and generated Thru 1-34+107-139-producing engineered MSCs (eMSCs) as an alternative delivery system. Osteoporosis was induced in 12-week-old C57BL/6 female mice via ovariectomy. The ovariectomized (OVX) mice were then treated with the two systems; (1) mcPTHrP 1-34+107-139 was intravenously administered three times (once per week); (2) eMSCs were intraperitoneally administered twice (on weeks four and six). Compared with the control OVX mice, the mcPTHrP 1-34+107-139-treated group showed better trabecular bone structure quality, increased bone formation, and decreased bone resorption. Similar results were observed in the eMSCs-treated OVX mice. Altogether, these results provide experimental evidence to support the potential of delivering PTHrP 1-34+107-139 using the minicircle technology for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Obesity, which has become a major public health problem, can arise from complex dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and immune responses, among other mechanisms. Some Lactobacillus strains effectively ameliorate obesity; however, the beneficial effects of Lactococcus spp., which are often used as dairy starters, remain unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of Lactococcus chungangensis CAU 28 using the 3T3-L1 cell line and obese mice fed a high-fat diet. Overall, administration of Lc. chungangensis CAU 28 effectively resolved obesity associated with weight gain and lipid accumulation. In differentiated 3T3-L1 cells, Lc. chungangensis CAU 28 treatment significantly diminished the total lipid quantity, inhibited triglyceride formation, and prevented the proliferation of adipogenic transcription factors (fatty acid synthase, adiponectin, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma, and CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein-α) associated with lipid accumulation. In the obesity mouse model, wherein the intake of Lc. chungangensis CAU 28 effectively reduced body weight gain, along with fat differentiation and accumulation (white fat; abdominal and subcutaneous). Furthermore, Lc. chungangensis CAU 28 increased serum adiponectin levels, decreased serum leptin levels, and effectively regulated adipokine secretion. It also increased the high-density lipoprotein:cholesterol ratio, reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, reduced the low-density lipoprotein:cholesterol ratio, and affected obesity-regulated inflammatory cytokines IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, IFN-γ, and IL-1ß. Additionally, Lc. chungangensis CAU 28 was associated with an increase in the CD3+CD4+CD8- phenotype among obese mice. Thus, the administration of Lc. chungangensis CAU 28 induced antiobesity effects, suggesting potential applications of this species as a supplement for obesity mitigation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Subcutaneous panniculitis-like alpha-beta T-cell lymphoma is a rare disease, which comprises less than 1% of all non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The epidemiology of this disorder has not been established in New Zealand, particularly the ethnic variation. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted from 2005 to 2017 in South Auckland, New Zealand. Patients with histopathologically confirmed subcutaneous panniculitis-like alpha-beta T-cell lymphoma, according to the WHO-EORTC classification, were included. Cases were identified from multiple data sources to ensure the study population was completely surveyed. Census data were used as the denominator. RESULTS: Ten cases were identified. Five were men and five women. The median age at diagnosis was of 38.5 years (range 17-73 years). Nine were Maori/Pacific, and one was European. The ethnic relative risk of subcutaneous panniculitis-like alpha-beta T-cell lymphoma in Maori/Pacific versus European was 11.1 (95% Cl 1.83-246.1, P = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Maori and Pacific have a higher relative risk of subcutaneous panniculitis-like alpha-beta T-cell lymphoma compared to non-Maori/Pacific.

BACKGROUND: The main barrier to the effective rheumatoid arthritis (RA) therapy is poor adherence. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have led to a significant change in the pattern and the number of medical visits. We assessed changing patterns of medical visits and no-show, and identified factors associated with no-show in patients with RA during COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: RA patients treated with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs at least 6 months who had been in remission or those with mild disease activity were observed for 6 months from February to July 2020. No-show was defined as a missed appointment that was not previously cancelled by the patient and several variables that might affect no-show were examined. RESULTS: A total of 376 patients and 1,189 appointments were evaluated. Among 376 patients, 164 patients (43.6%) missed appointment more than one time and no-show rate was 17.2% during COVID-19 pandemic. During the observation, face-to-face visits gradually increased and no-show gradually decreased. The logistic regression analysis identified previous history of no-show (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 2.225; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.422-3.479; P < 0.001) and fewer numbers of comorbidities (adjusted OR, 0.749; 95% CI, 0.584-0.961; P = 0.023) as the independent factors associated with no-show. CONCLUSION: Monthly analysis showed that the no-show rate and the pattern of medical visits gradually changed in patients with RA during COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, we found that previous history of no-show and fewer numbers of comorbidities as the independent factors associated with no-show.

Interest is increasing in the potentially beneficial role of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of atopic diseases. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of Lactococcus chungangensis CAU 28(T) against atopic dermatitis using murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, human keratinocyte HaCaT cells, human mast cell line HMC-1 cells, and a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis model (NC/Nga mice). The results showed that L. chungangensis CAU 28(T) exhibited potent antiinflammatory activity by inhibiting the production of the proinflammatory mediators nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Treatment with L. chungangensis CAU 28(T) reduced the release of ß-hexosaminidase and histamine in HMC-1 cells stimulated with mast cell activator compound 48/80. In addition, the back skin and ears of NC/Nga mice exhibited reduced histological manifestations of atopic skin lesions such as erosion, hyperplasia of the epidermis and dermis, and inflammatory cell infiltration. Oral administration of L. chungangensis CAU 28(T) suppressed the production of IL-4, IL-5, IL-12, IFN-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, and thymus- and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) in skin lesions, indicating that it strongly drives the local immune system with efficacy comparable to that of tacrolimus, a topical immunomodulatory drug used for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. The findings indicate that L. chungangensis CAU 28(T) could be a novel probiotic candidate for controlling the symptoms of atopic dermatitis.

A synthesis strategy for the preparation of ultrathin free-standing ternary-alloy nanosheets is reported. Ultrathin Pd-Pt-Ag nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 3 nm were successfully prepared by co-reduction of the metal precursors in an appropriate molar ratio in the presence of CO. Both the presence of CO and the interplay between the constituent metals provide fine control over the anisotropic two-dimensional growth of the ternary-alloy nanostructure. The prepared Pd-Pt-Ag nanosheets were superior catalysts of ethanol electrooxidation owing to their specific structural and compositional characteristics. This approach will pave the way for the design of multicomponent 2D nanomaterials with unprecedented functions.

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, short rod-shaped and moderately halophilic bacterial strain, CAU 1105T, was isolated from soil on reclaimed tidal land in Modo, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain CAU 1105T grows optimally at a temperature of 37 °C at pH 7 in the presence of 3% (w/v) sea salt. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity analyses, the novel isolate was assigned to the genus Palleronia within the class Alphaproteobacteria and showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Palleronia marisminoris B33T (95.4%). Strain CAU 1105T contained ubiquinone-10 as the only respiratory quinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major cellular fatty acid. The DNA G+C content of strain CAU 1105T was 64.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic differentiation, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data, strain CAU 1105T represents a novel species of the genus Palleronia, for which the name Palleroniasoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1105T ( = KCTC 42298T = NBRC 110740T). An emended description of the genus Palleronia is also provided.

Pd@Pt core-shell nanocrystals consisting of well-defined Pd nanocube cores and dendritic Pt shells were prepared by a new facile aqueous one-pot synthetic method. The prepared Pd@Pt nanocrystals exhibited efficient catalytic activity and stability toward methanol electrooxidation, and their catalytic function was highly dependent on their Pt shell thickness due to the different synergism between Pt and Pd.

Graphene synthesized via chemical vapor deposition is a notable candidate for flexible large-area transparent electrodes due to its great physical properties and its 2D activated surface area. Electrochromic devices in optical displays, smart windows, etc are suitable applications for graphene when used as a transparent conductive electrode. In this study, various-layer graphene was synthesized via chemical vapor deposition, and inorganic WO(x) was deposited on the layers, which have advantageous columnar structures and W(6+) and W(4+) oxidation states. The characteristics of graphene and WO(x) were verified using optical transmittance, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The optimum transparent conductive electrode condition for controlling graphene layers was investigated based on the optical density and cyclic voltammetry. Electrochromic devices were fabricated using a three-layer graphene electrode, which had the best optical density. The graphene in the flexible electrochromic device demonstrated a potential for replacing ITO in flexible electronics.

Onions are typically consumed as the bulb, but the peel and root are discarded as by-products during processing. This study investigated the potential functional use of these by-products by analyzing the polyphenols, antioxidant compounds, and antioxidant activity contained in onions. In this study, the bulb, peel, and root of five onion cultivars ('Tank', 'Bomul', 'Gujji' 'Cobra', and 'Hongbanjang') harvested in Korea were investigated. Caffeic acid and quercetin were most abundant in the peel, whereas methyl gallate was the predominant polyphenol in the bulb. Both DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were higher in onion peel and root than in the bulb. These findings suggest that onion peel and roots, which are often discarded, have abundant antioxidant substances and excellent antioxidant activity. This study provides basic data for the future use of onion peel and roots as functional ingredients with high added value.

For highly visual species like primates, facial and bodily emotion expressions play a crucial role in emotion perception. However, most research focuses on facial expressions, while the perception of bodily cues is still poorly understood. Using a novel comparative priming eye-tracking design, we examined whether our close primate relatives, the chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and humans infer emotions from bodily cues through subsequent perceptual integration with facial expressions. In experiment 1, we primed chimpanzees with videos of bodily movements of unfamiliar conspecifics engaged in social activities of opposite valence (play and fear) against neutral control scenes to examine attentional bias toward succeeding congruent or incongruent facial expressions. In experiment 2, we assessed the same attentional bias in humans yet using stimuli showing unfamiliar humans. In experiment 3, humans watched the chimpanzee stimuli of experiment 1, to examine cross-species emotion perception. Chimpanzees exhibited a persistent fear-related attention bias but did not associate bodily with congruent facial cues. In contrast, humans prioritized conspecifics' congruent facial expressions (matching bodily scenes) over incongruent ones (mismatching). Nevertheless, humans exhibited no congruency effect when viewing chimpanzee stimuli, suggesting difficulty in cross-species emotion perception. These results highlight differences in emotion perception, with humans being greatly affected by fearful and playful bodily cues and chimpanzees being strongly drawn toward fearful expressions, regardless of the preceding bodily priming cue. These data advance our understanding of the evolution of emotion signaling and the presence of distinct perceptual patterns in hominids.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is characterized by disruptions in memory, cognition, and personality, significantly impacting morbidity and mortality rates among older adults. However, the exact pathophysiological mechanism of AD remains unknown, and effective treatment options for AD are still lacking. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) are emerging as promising platforms for disease research, offering the ability to model the genetic mutations associated with various conditions. Patient-derived iPSCs are useful for modeling neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. In this study, we generated AD iPSCs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from a 65-year-old patient with AD carrying the E682K mutation in the gene encoding the amyloid precursor protein. Cerebral organoids derived from AD iPSCs recapitulated the AD phenotype, exhibiting significantly increased levels of tau protein. Our analysis revealed that an iPSC disease model of AD is a valuable assessment tool for pathophysiological research and drug screening.

The spread of American Bullfrog has a significant impact on the surrounding ecosystem. It is important to study the mechanisms of their spreading so that proper mitigation can be applied when needed. This study analyzes data from national surveys on bullfrog distribution. We divided the data into 25 regional clusters. To assess the spread within each cluster, we constructed temporal sequences of spatial distribution using the agglomerative clustering method. We employed Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) to identify rules governing the changes in spatial patterns. Each cell in the ECA grid represents either the presence or absence of bullfrogs based on observations. For each cluster, we counted the number of presence location in the sequence to quantify spreading intensity. We used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to learn the ECA rules and predict future spreading intensity by estimating the expected number of presence locations over 400 simulated generations. We incorporated environmental factors by obtaining habitat suitability maps using Maxent. We multiplied spreading intensity by habitat suitability to create an overall assessment of bullfrog invasion risk. We estimated the relative spreading assessment and classified it into four categories: rapidly spreading, slowly spreading, stable populations, and declining populations.

Cerium and nanocubes: CeO2-supported Pd-Cu-alloy nanocubes (Pd-Cu NCs/CeO2) with high content and good dispersion of the Pd-Cu NCs were prepared in high yields by heating a solution containing Pd, Cu, and Ce precursors. The prepared Pd-Cu NCs/CeO2 have excellent catalytic activity and stability toward formic acid electro-oxidation due to the synergism between the Pd-Cu-alloy catalysts and the CeO2 support.

We report on a method for the large-scale production of graphene micropatterns by a self-assembly mediated process. The evaporation-induced self-assembly technique was engineered to produce highly ordered graphene patterns on flexible substrates in a simplified and scalable manner. The crossed stripe graphene patterns have been produced over a large area with regions consisting of single- and two-layer graphene. Based on these graphene patterns, flexible graphene-based field effect transistors have been fabricated with an ion-gel gate dielectric, which operates at low voltages of < 2 V with a hole and electron mobility of 214 and 106 cm(2)/V·s, respectively. The self-assembly approach described here may pave the way for the nonlithographic production of graphene patterns, which is scalable to large areas and compatible with roll-to-roll system.

Rhinopithecus roxellana are generally seasonal breeders, although copulation can occur throughout the year. Previous studies suggest that estradiol modulates female sexual behavior during the mating season. However, the effects of social context on estrogen levels and behavior have not been fully explored. We studied the relationship between sexual behaviors and fecal estrogens in a group of captive R. roxellana during a period of social instability. We collected behavioral data for six months and collected fecal samples at 2-3-day intervals for four months spanning the mating and nonmating seasons, and analyzed fecal estrogen levels via RIA. Females showed clear cyclic solicitation and copulation peaks in the mating season, which corresponded with sharp peaks in fecal estrogens. During the nonmating season, solicitation rates, copulation rates, and fecal estrogens were generally low. However, one nonpregnant female displayed a sharp peak in solicitations, copulations, and estrogens during the nonmating season 10-14 days after a male replacement. Our results provide preliminary evidence that social and behavioral changes affect estrogen levels in R. roxellana.
