RESUMEN

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) frequently lead to the impairment of visual functions including blurred and/or distorted vision, due to the disruption of visual cortical mechanisms. Previous mTBI studies have focused on specific aspects of visual processing, e.g., stereopsis, using artificial, low-level, stimuli (e.g., Gaussian patches and gratings). In the current study we investigated high-level visual processing by employing images of real world natural scenes as our stimuli. Both an mTBI group and control group composed of healthy observers were tasked with detecting sinusoidal distortions added to the natural scene stimuli as a function of the distorting sinusoid's spatial frequency. It was found that the mTBI group were equally as sensitive to high frequency distortions as the control group. However, sensitivity decreased more rapidly with decreasing distortion frequency in the mTBI group relative to the controls. These data reflect a deficit in the mTBI group to spatially integrate over larger regions of the scene.

RESUMEN

We evaluated the proposal that there exist detectors of the following four cardinal phases in human vision: +cosine, -cosine, +sine, and -sine. First, we assessed whether there was evidence that these cardinal phases were processed by independent 'labeled lines,' using a discrimination at detection threshold paradigm. Second, we assessed whether suprathreshold phase discrimination was best at phases intermediate between these cardinal values. Third, we tried to replicate previous evidence showing that an absence of facilitation occurs only between cosine pedestals and sine tests (or vice-versa). In all three experimental approaches we found no compelling evidence for four cardinal phase groupings. We did however find evidence for independent detectors for pure increments and decrements (+/-cosine). We suggest that phase discrimination, whether at threshold or suprathreshold, is mediated by mechanisms that encode the relative positions and contrasts of local increments and decrements within the stimulus.

Do texture-sensitive mechanisms operate separately on, or pool, luminance and colour contrast information? We addressed this question by measuring threshold-versus-amplitude functions for orientation-modulated (OM) gratings comprised of gabor elements defined by either colour or luminance contrast. In both the uncrossed (all elements in test and mask defined by either colour or luminance contrast) and crossed (equal mixtures of luminance and colour contrast in both test and mask) conditions, evidence of sub-threshold facilitation between test and mask was obtained. The sub-threshold facilitation in the crossed condition could not be accounted for by luminance artifacts in the ostensibly isoluminant gabors. The results are consistent with a single visual mechanism sensitive to OM textures that pools information from both the luminance and chromatic post-receptoral mechanisms.
