RESUMEN

The effect of season (S), lamb rearing system (RT) and grain supplementation (GS) on post-partum fertility in Katahdin ewes and growth in Katahdin lambs was evaluated. Katahdin ewes were bred to lamb in fall (n = 36) or spring (n = 56) and at approximately 2.5 months post-partum were randomly assigned to be permanently separated or to continue to suckle their lambs for an additional 3 months. All ewes were joined with rams following treatment to synchronize oestrus. Weaned (W, n = 84) and continuously suckled lambs (CSK, n = 88) were fed forage only (n = 84; hay and pasture for fall- and spring-born lambs respectively) or were supplemented (n = 88; 18% crude protein ration ad libitum) and all weighed biweekly. Ewes rebred in the fall had a shorter ram introduction to lambing interval (p < 0.05), higher prolificacy (p = 0.001) and higher lambing rates (p = 0.02); however, the proportion of ewes lambing was not affected by season. The first service lambing rate was lower in ewes continuously suckling lambs in the spring, but not in the fall breeding season (S × RT, p = 0.03). Lambs that continuously suckled their dams and were supplemented grew quicker and gained more (p < 0.001) than their weaned and unsupplemented counterparts. The effect of CSK on growth rate of lambs was greater in the spring (RT × S; p = 0.05), and the effect of supplementation on growth rate of lambs was greater in the fall (GS × S; p < 0.0001). In conclusion, Katahdin lambs achieved higher weight gains from continuous suckling and grain supplementation. Moreover, Katahdin ewes are capable of early rebreeding post-partum while suckling their lambs, which makes them suited for use in accelerated lambing programmes.

Extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) is a minimally invasive lateral trans-psoas approach to the thoraco-lumbar spine that enables surgical debridement of the disc space and facilitates fusion. Previous reports are limited to case series, which have no outcomes measuring improvement. We aim to determine the effectiveness of XLIF in the treatment of patients with spondylodiscitis. We performed a cohort study over four years (2008-2011). Patients were treated with XLIF if they met our selection criteria - symptoms suggestive of discitis with consistent imaging and intractable back pain making patients bedbound. Patients were excluded if medically unfit for surgery. Pre and post-operative VAS and ODI scores were used as formal outcome measures. 14 patients were included and at 12 months, median VAS and ODI scores had improved 4.0 (95% CI, 1.9-6.5) (p = 0.005) and 37.0% (95% CI, 10.7-53.7) (p = 0.015) respectively. All patients with available imaging showed evidence of fusion. Patients typically received 6-8 weeks of antibiotics and all showed normalisation of inflammatory markers. At 5 year follow-up, median VAS and ODI were still improved at 3.0 (95% CI, 1.7-4.4) (p = 0.01) and 40% (95% CI, 10-52) (p = 0.028) respectively. The median length of inpatient stay was 10 days (range 4-40 days). This is the first study to demonstrate that the XLIF technique can significantly improve pain in discitis patients using validated formal outcome measurements. This technique could therefore potentially be used to reduce pain in patients with discitis, help them to mobilise earlier and reduce the duration of their hospital stay.

The relationship between circulating concentration of anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) and the LH content of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) preparation on follicular growth and ovulatory response in water buffaloes was evaluated. A single blood sample was taken from cows (N=31; age: 9.06±0.98years) to determine systemic AMH. Animals with concentrations higher or lower than 194±30pg/ml were placed into LOW and HIGH AMH groups and were assigned randomly to be superovulated FSH containing either a high (FSHp, HLH) or low (FolltropinV, LLH) LH content. Follicular growth and ovulation were monitored using transrectal ultrasonography. In animals with HIGH systemic AMH, treatment with FSH with a high LH content was associated with more small follicles (AMH X FSH; P=0.02). AMH had no effect on small follicles in animals treated with LLH. Females with a HIGH AMH had greater numbers of small follicles (P=0.01) and total follicles (P=0.005) than LOW AMH cows. Animals treated with HLH had more small follicles (P=0.001) but fewer large (P<0.001) and total follicles (P=0.0005) than those treated with LLH. Among animals with HIGH AMH, those treated with LLH, ovulated more follicles than those treated with HLH. (AMH X FSH; P=0.03). In conclusion, selecting animals with high AMH concentration and the use of FSH preparations with a lower LH content may improve the superovulatory response in water buffaloes.

RESUMEN

The effect of dietary energy and weight class on the fertility of yearling beef heifers (Angus, Hereford, and Angus x Hereford) was investigated over 2 years. In year 1, heifers (n=58) were classed as heavy (HW; > or =340 kg) or light weight (LW; <340kg) and then assigned to receive either a low (LE; 0.23 kg/day) or high energy (HE; 0.68 kg/day) diet. In year 2, heifers (n=60) were also classified as heavy (> or =335kg) or light weight (<335 kg), but the energy content of the diet was raised so that heifers on the LE and HE were targeted to gain 0.46 and 0.79 kg/day, respectively. Heifers in the four groups, LELW (n=14 and 12), LEHW (n=16 and 17), HELW (n=13 and 15), and HEHW (n=15 and 16) received restricted amounts of concentrate (HE > LE) and free choice hay over 47 or 42 days (year 1 and year 2, respectively). To synchronize estrus, heifers were fed capsules containing MGA (0.5 mg/animal each day) beginning 11 days before the end of the feeding trial (day 0), PGF(2alpha) (25mg i.m.) and estradiol benzoate (Ebeta; 400 microg i.m.) was given on days 8 and 10, respectively. Estrous behavior was observed (days 10 and 11) and all heifers were inseminated on day 11. Following AI, heifers were re-grouped and a bull was introduced (days 27-39) for the second service in both years. Pregnancy diagnosis for the first (days 41-42) and second services (days 69-97) was performed by transrectal ultrasonography. Transrectal ultrasonic observations of ovarian follicle number and size were completed for a subset of heifers (n=5-8) from each experimental group at the end of the feeding trial. The effect of year was not significant for any of the reproductive performance variables measured. The mean ADG was (0.72 +/- 0.04 kg/day) and was greater in LW than HW heifers and in heifers in the HE than LE treatment groups (P <0.05). In heifers receiving the LE diet, ADG was lower in HW than LW heifers (weight x diet; P=0.02; 0.54 +/- 0.04 and 0.62 +/- 0.03 kg/day for HW and LW heifers, respectively). The diameter of the largest follicle was greater in heifers receiving the HE diet (P < 0.05; 11.3 +/- 0.4 mm) than those on the LE diet (10.3 +/- 0.3), and in LW (P <0.05) compared to HW heifers. The HE diet increased the size of the largest follicle in LW but not HW heifers (diet x weight, P <0.05). The percentage of pubertal heifers at the end of the feeding period (59.3%), estrous response (56.4%), conception rate (47.7%), ovulation rate (88.9%), and first service pregnancy rate (36.2%) were not significantly affected by initial weight or diet. There was a tendency for first service pregnancy rates to be greater in LW than HW heifers consuming the LE diet (diet x weight, P <0.1; 54.2 +/- 15 and 30.3 +/- 10% for LELW and LEHW heifers, respectively). Pregnancy rate after two services was greater (P=0.01) in LW (82 +/- 10%) than in HW (64.5 +/- 10%). The LE diet achieved moderate rates of gain and allowed high level of reproductive performance in LW but not HW heifers.

The ability of ram introduction (RI) and progesterone pre-treatment to induce increases in LH secretion and ovulation, and the ability of progesterone pre-treatment with or without estrogen to induce estrus and ovulation in fall-born ewe lambs during seasonal anestrus was investigated. In early July, lambs of mixed breeds (41.8+/-0.6 kg and 250.7+/-1.3 days of age) were assigned to receive no treatment (C, n=7), to be introduced to rams (7:1 ewe:ram ratio; R, n=7), to be treated with progesterone (a used CIDR device) for 5 days (P, n=5), to be treated with progesterone and introduced to rams at CIDR removal (PR, n=11), or to receive the latter treatment plus an injection of estradiol benzoate (25 microg, E2beta i.m.) 24 h after CIDR withdrawal/RI (PER, n=11). Blood samples were collected from all lambs every 4h for 60 h beginning at RI/CIDR withdrawal (0 h), to characterize the LH surge profile and in groups R and C every 15 min for 8 h between 12 and 20 h for determination of LH pulse frequencies. Ultrasonographic examinations of the ovaries were conducted at 0, 36 and 60 h. In ram-exposed groups lambs were also observed for raddle marks every 4h from 0 to 60 h. The LH pulse frequency (pulses/8 h) was higher in group R (P<0.01; 7.7+/- 0.5) than group C lambs (2.7+/- 0.8). More lambs in groups exposed to rams than in the C or P groups showed an LH surge (P<0.05; 0, 100, 0, 72.7 and 100%, for C, R, P, PR and PER groups, respectively). Time from RI/CIDR removal to initiation of the LH surge was greater in lambs in the PR (43.5+/- 3.8h) than in the R (32.6+/- 4.6h; P=0.08) or PER (33+/- 1.2h; P<0.01). Diameter of the largest follicle at 0 h (3.2+/- 0.2mm) was not different among groups. Growth rate of the largest follicle between 0 and 36 h was greater (P<0.05) in RI than in C or P groups. Diameter of the largest follicle at 36 h was larger (P<0.05) in lambs in R (5.6+/- 0.2mm) and PR (5.1+/- 0.5mm) than C (4.0+/- 0.6mm) or P (3.8+/- 0.4mm) groups, and in R than PER (4.3+/- 0.4mm) treatment groups. Only lambs in the RI groups ovulated. Among RI groups the percentage of lambs ovulating was greater in the R (P<0.05; 85.7%) than PR (33.3%) groups with an intermediate response observed in lambs in treatment group PER (71.4%). The estrous response in progesterone pre-treated groups was greater (P<0.05) in lambs also treated with estrogen (PER; 81.8%), than in lambs introduced to rams alone (PR; 45.5%). In conclusion, ram introduction by itself, but not progesterone treatment alone, induces increases in LH pulse frequency, follicular development, and ovulation in fall-born ewe lambs during seasonal anestrus, further, P4 pre-treatment and RI when combined with E2 results in a high estrous response.

The objectives were to evaluate, in anestrous ewes, the effectiveness of a CIDR-G device (0.3 g progesterone) administered for 5 d to induce estrus; and FSH (Folltropin; 55 mg NIH-FSH-P1 equivalent) in saline:propylene glycol (1:4) 24 h before insert removal (Day 0), to increase ovulation rate and prolificacy. Ewes of mixed breeding were assigned at random to 3 treatments: control (C; n = 125), 5 d progesterone (P5; n = 257) and 5 d progesterone plus FSH (P5F; n = 271). Intact rams were joined at insert removal and ewes were observed every 24 h for 3 d. On Day 14, the ovulation rates of all ewes detected in estrus in the treated groups were determined using transrectal ultrasonography. Rams were removed on Day 26 to 31. Ewes were examined for pregnancy then, and again 20 to 25 d later to detect ewes that conceived to the second service period. Percentage of ewes marked by rams was higher in progesterone-treated (77%) than in C (20%; P < 0.01), but did not differ between P5 and P5F. The ovulation rate (1.95+/-0.04) did not differ due to FSH. Conception (68%) and pregnancy (52%) rates were higher in progesterone-treated (P < 0.01) than in C (0%) ewes. Estrous response varied quadratically with time after ram introduction, and the conception rate varied quadratically with the time of observation of onset of estrus. Over two service periods more progesterone-treated than C ewes lambed (65 vs 45%; P < 0.01). Lambs born per ewe exposed (0.7+/-0.1, 1.0+/-0.1, and 1.1+/-0.1 for C, P5 and P5F, respectively) was increased by progesterone (P < 0.05). Litter size to the first service period (1.59+/-0.04) and overall (1.54+/-0.03) did not differ among treatment groups. FSH-treated ewes tended to have more lambs (1.67+/-0.1) than did ewes receiving progesterone alone (1.5+/-0.1; P = 0.06) and than did ewes lambing to the second service period (1.5+/-0.1; P = 0.06). In summary, a 5-d progesterone pre-treatment of anestrous ewes induced estrous cycles and increased the pregnancy rates. A single injection of FSH only tended to increase litter size.

The objectives of this study were to determine whether a new progesterone (P4)-releasing intravaginal insert would induce fertile estrus and whether FSH combined with the insert would increase prolificacy in anestrous ewes introduced to rams. Ewes of mixed breeding on six farms were assigned to four randomized treatments: control (C), n = 73; 12 d P4 (polycapralactone [PCL] insert with 0.82 g P4), (P12), n = 73; 12 d P4 plus i.m. FSH (Folltropin, 55 mg NIH-FSH-P1 equivalent) in propylene glycol, 24 h before insert removal, (P12F), n = 71; and 5 d P4 plus FSH (P5F), n = 77. Growth and ovulation of follicles were observed ultrasonographically in 20 ewes at four farms (five/treatment) at insert removal and 36, 48, 72, and 96 h later. Intact rams (1:15 ewes in multiple-sire groups) were joined at insert removal, and raddle marks were observed every 12 h for 5 d. On d 26 to 30, rams were removed; ewes were examined for pregnancy then and 20 d later. Percentage of ewes marked by rams was greater in P4-treated (66 to 79%) than in C (12%; P < 0.01) ewes and in P5F (79%) than in P12F (66%; P < 0.05). Diameters of largest follicles at insert removal were greater (P < 0.05) in P4-treated (5.5 +/- 0.2) than in C ewes (4.8 +/- 0.2). Progesterone increased numbers of follicles > 3 mm (P < 0.01) or ovulated (P < 0.05; 2.6 +/- 0.6 vs 1.3 +/- 0.6 in C ewes) and FSH increased number of follicles > 3 mm (P < 0.05). In FSH-treated ewes, ovulation rate tended to be greater after treatment with P4 for 5 than for 12 d (P = 0.09, 3.3 +/- 0.6 and 2.2 +/- 0.4, respectively). More P4-treated than C ewes lambed (P < 0.01) to the first (38 to 45 vs 0%) or both (63 to 66 vs 41%) service periods. Prolificacy (first service) did not differ between FSH-treated ewes (P12F + P5F; 1.8 +/- 0.1) and ewes treated with P4 only (P12; 1.6 +/- 0.1). However, FSH increased prolificacy to first service (1.8 +/- 0.1) over prolificacy to second service (C ewes 1.5 +/- 0.1; P < 0.05, and all ewes 1.4 +/- 0.1; P < 0.01). Pregnancy retention did not differ among treatments but was greater (P < 0.01) in ewes that conceived at the first (90.9 +/- 3.7) than at the second (72.5 +/- 3.3) service period. In conclusion, a PCL insert in combination with ram introduction at insert removal was more effective than ram introduction alone to induce synchronized estrus and ovulation and to yield pregnancy after one or two service periods. Treatment with P4 for 5 d was as effective as for 12 d to induce fertile estrus in FSH-treated anestrous ewes.

"Bangladeshis are one of a wide variety of recently established immigrant groups in Italy, analysed here as an example of the interaction of geopolitics, employment and survival strategies, and the micropolitics of the community's organization in Italy. The geopolitics involves events in Bangladesh (change of government), Italy (the Martelli Law and other legislation), Europe (EU and other European policies, and the opening of eastern Europe as a routeway) and the Gulf. The micropolitics concerns mechanisms of immigration, migration sponsorship, connections to Italian political groups and clientelistic relationships within the community. Micropolitics also governs to a large extent the types of mostly informal work done by Bangladeshis in Rome."

The effect of stimulation with a gonadotropin preparation with combined follicle stimulating and luteininzing hormone like activity on reproductive success in anestrous ewes was evaluated. In Experiment 1, ewes of mixed breeding were treated with CIDR inserts (0.3g progesterone) for 5 days and were assigned randomly to receive either gonadotropin stimulation (3mL i.m. injection of P.G. 600®, 240IU eCG and 120IU hCG) at CIDR removal or no further treatment. Intact raddled rams were joined at insert removal for 30-35 days, and ewes were observed for indications of estrus after 4 days of ram exposure. Pregnancy diagnosis was conducted via transrectal ultrasonography at the time of ram removal and again 20-25 days. The second experiment was similar to Experiment 1, except treated ewes received the gonadotropin 1 day prior to insert removal. In Experiment 1, incidence of estrus was greater for treated ewes (P=0.01), and prolificacy tended to be greater in treated ewes (P=0.06). In Experiment 2, treated ewes had greater conception rates (P=0.01), pregnancy rates to first service (P=0.0007), and tended to have greater overall pregnancy rates than control ewes (P=0.07). A greater percentage of ewes lambed in the gonadotropin treated ewes than in ewes in the control group (P<0.0001), and overall lambing rates in treated ewes were greater than non-treated controls (P<0.0001). In conclusion, gonadotropin treatment 1 day prior to CIDR removal increased reproductive success in progesterone-treated anestrous ewes.

Three experiments were conducted on anestrous ewes of Suffolk, Dorset, and Katahdin breeding to examine the potential value of GnRH to improve ovulation and pregnancy in response to introduction of rams. In Experiment 1, treatment with GnRH 2d after treatment with progesterone (P(4); 25mg i.m.) at introduction of rams was compared to treatment with P(4) alone at the time of introduction of rams. Treatment with GnRH did not increase percentages of ewes with a corpus luteum (CL) 14d after introduction of rams, pregnant 32d after treatment with PGF(2)alpha 14d after introduction of rams, or percent of treated ewes lambing to all services. In Experiment 2, treatments with GnRH on day 2, 7, or both after introduction of rams were compared. Treatments did not differ in mean estrous response, percentages of ewes with a detectable CL or number of CL present on day 11, or mean pregnancy and lambing rates. Therefore, neither one nor two injections of GnRH at these times appeared to be effective to induce anestrous ewes to breed. In Experiment 3, treatments compared included GnRH 4d before introduction of rams, GnRH 4d before and 1d after introduction of rams, ram introduction alone, and treatment with P(4) (25mg i.m.) at the time of introduction of rams. Percentages of ewes with concentrations of P(4) greater than 1ng/mL (indicating formation of CL had occurred) 7d after ram introduction tended to be greater (P<0.07) in ewes treated with GnRH or P(4) than in control ewes treated with ram introduction alone. However, there was no difference in P(4) concentrations between groups by day 11 or 12 after introduction of rams. Estrous response rates and percentages of ewes pregnant 95d after PGF(2)alpha was administered (on day 12 after introduction of rams) tended to be greater (P=0.08 and 0.06, respectively) in ewes treated with GnRH or P(4) than in ewes exposed to rams only. There was no difference in response variables between ewes treated with GnRH 4d before introduction of rams and ewes treated with GnRH 4d before and 1d after introduction of rams. In conclusion, treatment with GnRH 4d before ram introduction showed promise as an alternative to treatment with P(4) to improve the ovulatory response and reproductive performance of ewes introduced to rams during seasonal anestrus.

Embryonic and fetal mortality reduce lambing rates and litter sizes, thus contributing to economic losses in the sheep industry. In the current study, the timing of late embryonic and fetal loss in ewes and the factors with which these losses were associated were examined. Ewes lambing and lambs born were compared with pregnancy diagnosis and counts of embryos by ultrasonography near d 25, 45, 65, or 85 of gestation. Approximately 19.9% of the ewes experienced late embryonic loss, fetal loss, or both; and 21.2% of the embryos or fetuses were lost from d 25 to term. Potential offspring were lost throughout gestation; 3.7% of embryos from d 25 to 45, 4.3% of fetuses from d 45 to 65, 3.3% from d 65 to 85, and 11.5% from d 85 to parturition; thus, approximately 3 to 4% of the potential offspring were lost for each 20-d period of pregnancy beyond d 25. A greater proportion of ewes lost one (36.7%) rather than all (20.5% single; 3.8% multiple) embryos or fetuses. The patterns of loss were similar in ewes mated during the anestrous season and the transitional period and did not vary with service period within breeding season or method of synchronization of estrus. Late embryonic or fetal losses were not related to the temperature-humidity index. Maternal serum collected near d 25, 45, 65, or 85 of gestation was assayed for concentrations of progesterone, estradiol-17beta , and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The proportions of embryos or fetuses lost were associated with breed type (P < 0.05), as were concentrations of progesterone (P < 0.01), estradiol (P < 0.05), and VEGF (P < 0.01). The relationships of loss or retention of pregnancy to hormonal variables at the 4 stages studied were limited. Complete and partial losses increased rapidly as maternal progesterone at d 25 decreased below 2 ng/mL (P < 0.05). Survival of fetuses within a litter from d 25 to 65 was greater for ewes with medium concentrations of VEGF near d 25 and from d 65 to parturition was greater for ewes with high concentrations of VEGF near d 45 (P < 0.05). In summary, late embryonic or fetal losses occurred from d 25 throughout gestation and varied with breed type and with concentrations of progesterone in maternal serum on d 25.

Three experiments were conducted with a total of 1579 ewes to examine reproductive performance in response to synchronization of oestrus during the breeding season, using controlled internal drug releasing (CIDR-G) inserts in regimens designed to provide high concentrations of circulating progesterone. In experiment 1, treatment with two CIDR-G inserts for 12 days produced conception rate (79%) and prolificacy (1.9) to first service equivalent to breeding at natural oestrus (56% and 2.0, respectively). Pregnancy rates to two service periods were 90 and 79%, respectively. In experiments 2 and 3, progesterone was delivered by a single CIDR-G insert for 5 days in combination with prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha; 5 mg i.m., twice, 3 h apart) the day before (experiment 2), or at insert removal (experiment 3). The combined treatments improved rates of synchronization of oestrus (p<0.01) by 23 and 20% points, respectively, and pregnancy rates to the first service period by 19 (p<0.05) and 13 (p<0.01) percentage points, respectively, compared to treatment with PGF2alpha alone. It is concluded that the combination of treatment for 5 days with a CIDR-G insert and two injections of 5 mg PGF2alpha, the day before, or the day of insert removal, were effective treatments to obtain high fertility at synchronized oestrus in ewes during the breeding season.

The envelope glycoprotein gB (gpUL55) is a candidate for inclusion in subunit cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccines, although data on gB antibody responses after natural infection are limited. [35S]-labeled gB was partially purified from cells infected with an adenovirus recombinant expressing gB and used in radioimmunoprecipitation assays to characterize responses in solid organ transplant recipients with primary (n = 11) or secondary (n = 8) CMV infection. Seropositive transplant patients without evidence of infection (n = 5) and healthy seroconverters (n = 7) were also studied. gB antibody developed concurrently with CMV-specific IgG, IgM, and neutralizing activity in transplant patients with primary infection. Sustained boosts in gB antibody were seen in patients with secondary infection, and healthy seroconverters developed early gB responses. These data imply that gB antibody is an integral part of the humoral response to CMV infection, and, in view of experimental data regarding immunogenicity, support a role for gB in subunit vaccines.

Intracellular processing of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) glycoprotein B (gB; gpUL55) expressed by a recombinant adenovirus (Ad-gB) was studied in human A549 cells as processing events could affect immunogenicity when such viruses are used as live-recombinant vaccines. Cleavage of [35S]methionine-labelled gp13O into gp93 and gp55 reached a maximum after a 3 h chase. Cleavage was completely inhibited by brefeldin A, suggesting that processing normally occurs as a late Golgi or post-Golgi event. Uncleaved gp 130 remained completely sensitive to endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase H (Endo-H) in untreated cells following long chase periods, indicating high-mannose oligosaccharides at all of the 18 N-linked glycosylation sites (Asn-X-Ser/Thr) and retention in the endoplasmic reticulum. Endo-H analysis of gp55 from swainsonine-treated and untreated cells was consistent with glycosylation at all three potential sites, with two oligosaccharides remaining sensitive to Endo-H and one being processed to Endo-H resistance. The heavily glycosylated N-terminal gp93 subunit was not detected by [35S]methionine-labelling but was easily detected along with gp55 after labelling with [3H]mannose. No cleavage of gp 130 was observed in analogous pulse-chase radiolabelling of Ad-gB-infected human fibroblasts, even though these cells are permissive for HCMV replication and can process the native gB molecule. Processing of gB in recombinant adenovirus-infected A549 cells was generally similar to that previously reported for native gB in HCMV-infected fibroblasts.

We performed an experimental investigation of thermal lensing in silver gallium selenide (AgGaSe(2)) optical parametric oscillator crystals pumped by a 2-µm laser at ambient temperature. We determined an empirical expression for the effective thermal focusing power in terms of the pump power, beam diameter, crystal length, and absorption coefficient. This relation may be used to estimate average power limitations in designing AgGaSe(2) optical parametric oscillators. We also demonstrated an 18% slope efficiency from a 2-µm pumped AgGaSe(2) optical parametric oscillator operated at 77 K, at which temperature thermal lensing is substantially reduced because of an increase in the thermal conductivity and a decrease in the thermal index gradient dn/dT. Cryogenic cooling may provide an additional option for scaling up the average power capability of a 2-µm pumped AgGaSe(2) optical parametric oscillator.
