RESUMEN

In this study, we construct a spatio-temporal surface atlas of the developing cerebral cortex, which is an important tool for analysing and understanding normal and abnormal cortical development. In utero Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of 80 healthy fetuses was performed, with a gestational age range of 21.7 to 38.9 weeks. Topologically correct cortical surface models were extracted from reconstructed 3D MRI volumes. Accurate correspondences were obtained by applying a joint spectral analysis to cortices for sets of subjects close to a specific age. Sulcal alignment was found to be accurate in comparison to spherical demons, a state of the art registration technique for aligning 2D cortical representations (average Fréchet distance≈0.4 mm at 30 weeks). We construct consistent, unbiased average cortical surface templates, for each week of gestation, from age-matched groups of surfaces by applying kernel regression in the spectral domain. These were found to accurately capture the average cortical shape of individuals within the cohort, suggesting a good alignment of cortical geometry. Each spectral embedding and its corresponding cortical surface template provide a dual reference space where cortical geometry is aligned and a vertex-wise morphometric analysis can be undertaken.

A herd of 650 Holstein cows was examined for skin disease. Approximately 400 of the lactating adults were affected, but heifers, calves, and nonlactating cows were clinically normal. The condition was characteristic of primary photosensitization. Milk production of the affected cows was normal. Affected cows did not appear to be ill, and none of the cows was icteric. Three of 7 cows had high serum gamma-glutamyltransferase activities, but in the other 4 cows, activity was within the reference range. Serum activities of other hepatic enzymes were within reference ranges in the 7 cows that were examined. Hepatic biopsy specimens from 3 cows were normal. Specimens from 4 other cows had changes that ranged from minimal to mild, chronic, lymphoplasmacytic periportal hepatitis to acute, random, necrotizing hepatitis. Development of photosensitivity was related to ingestion of alfalfa silage. Acetone extracts of the alfalfa silage, but not of other feedstuffs, were found to inhibit growth of Candida albicans under ultraviolet light. Cows experimentally fed a diet composed exclusively of the alfalfa silage developed skin lesions after 6 days, but did not have detectable serum concentrations of phylloerythrin.

Supervision does not represent merely the acquisition of facts. It is an emotionally charged process that touches on therapists' affective problems, interpersonal conflicts, problems in being helped, and problems in helping (Ekstein). As such, it is a process similar to, but not the same as, psychotherapy. Supervision is necessary for continued professional growth, no matter how skilled the nurse may be. Other mental health disciplines have long accepted supervision as an essential component of professional work. A number of methods can be used to review the therapist's work, including case material discussion, conjoint interviewing, direct observation, and review of mechanical recordings. This can be done individually, in groups, or among peers. A supervisor can be a senior clinician from any of the mental health disciplines. The nurse should not be limited to receiving supervision only from other nurses. Periodic evaluations of the supervisory relationship as well as the therapist's skills are recommended. Supervision is a valuable tool that the nurse therapist should use fully to develop the professional self.

Appendages are important sources of sensory information for all animals that possess them but they are commonly damaged in nature. We describe how the tactile system of the crayfish Cherax destructor functioned when subjected to the kind of damage found in wild-caught or cultured animals. Touch information was methodically varied by the removal of antennae and chelae. The resulting behaviour was analysed in a T-maze. Crayfish with a single antenna ablated turned toward the intact appendage, however, those with only a partial ablation did not, suggesting that a tactile information threshold exists for normal behaviour. When exposed to the same environment after an antennal ablation but with no prior experience in that terrain, crayfish also turned toward the side of the intact antenna. By contrast, when animals with experience obtained in a previous trial with intact antennae were tested after ablation of one antenna, they did not turn into one arm of the maze more than the other. These two outcomes indicate that behaviour is affected by an interaction between the time at which an injury occurs and an animal's knowledge of the topography, and that an injury may affect learning. We also tested to see if other appendages could provide tactile information to compensate for antennal loss. Input from the chelae did not affect the turning behaviour of crayfish in the maze.
