RESUMEN
Cadmium was administered in drinking water at a concentration of 50 ppm to female Wistar rats for 5 months before mating, and then continued during gestation. The histochemical evaluation revealed a relative decrease in succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and Mg+2-stimulated ATPase activities in duodenum, liver and kidney in the exposed rats. It is suggested that the resulting decrease in metabolic efficiency in maternal organs would be expected to exert an indirect, inhibitive effect on maternal-fetal transfer of nutrients, as reflected by fetal growth retardation.

The behaviour of Dallop knitted polyester nets, produced by the Research and Development Centre of Knitting Industry in lódz was experimentally tested. The prostheses were implanted in dog's abdominal walls, in subcutaneous tissue and in muscles fascias. After six months observation it was stated that they may be used in surgical clinic because of the small tissue reaction and proper healing into tissues. New type of packages for radiative sterilization was also favourably evaluated.

L929 and WEHI tumor cell lines were genetically modified to constitutively express the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Ole 1 gene, coding for the delta 9-desaturase enzyme. These cells exhibit an increased ratio of monounsaturated fatty acids in their membrane phospholipids paralleled by an overall decrease in the membrane molecular order and a highly increased tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) sensitivity. The TNF-alpha signaling cascade involves events, like receptor clustering and cleavage of membrane constituent lipid molecules by phospholipases, which are influenced by the physical state of cellular membranes. We discuss the possible involvement of non-bilayer forming lipids in the control of signaling mechanisms leading to TNF cytotoxicity.
