RESUMEN

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease1. Currently, no drug lowers cholesterol through directly promoting cholesterol excretion. Human genetic studies have identified that the loss-of-function Asialoglycoprotein receptor 1 (ASGR1) variants associate with low cholesterol and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease2. ASGR1 is exclusively expressed in liver and mediates internalization and lysosomal degradation of blood asialoglycoproteins3. The mechanism by which ASGR1 affects cholesterol metabolism is unknown. Here, we find that Asgr1 deficiency decreases lipid levels in serum and liver by stabilizing LXRα. LXRα upregulates ABCA1 and ABCG5/G8, which promotes cholesterol transport to high-density lipoprotein and excretion to bile and faeces4, respectively. ASGR1 deficiency blocks endocytosis and lysosomal degradation of glycoproteins, reduces amino-acid levels in lysosomes, and thereby inhibits mTORC1 and activates AMPK. On one hand, AMPK increases LXRα by decreasing its ubiquitin ligases BRCA1/BARD1. On the other hand, AMPK suppresses SREBP1 that controls lipogenesis. Anti-ASGR1 neutralizing antibody lowers lipid levels by increasing cholesterol excretion, and shows synergistic beneficial effects with atorvastatin or ezetimibe, two widely used hypocholesterolaemic drugs. In summary, this study demonstrates that targeting ASGR1 upregulates LXRα, ABCA1 and ABCG5/G8, inhibits SREBP1 and lipogenesis, and therefore promotes cholesterol excretion and decreases lipid levels.

Equine herpesvirus type 8 (EHV-8) causes abortion and respiratory disease in horses and donkeys, leading to serious economic losses in the global equine industry. Currently, there is no effective vaccine or drug against EHV-8 infection, underscoring the need for a novel antiviral drug to prevent EHV-8-induced latent infection and decrease the pathogenicity of this virus. The present study demonstrated that hyperoside can exert antiviral effects against EHV-8 infection in RK-13 (rabbit kidney cells), MDBK (Madin-Darby bovine kidney), and NBL-6 cells (E. Derm cells). Mechanistic investigations revealed that hyperoside induces heme oxygenase-1 expression by activating the c-Jun N-terminal kinase/nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 axis, alleviating oxidative stress and triggering a downstream antiviral interferon response. Accordingly, hyperoside inhibits EHV-8 infection. Meanwhile, hyperoside can also mitigate EHV-8-induced injury in the lungs of infected mice. These results indicate that hyperoside may serve as a novel antiviral agent against EHV-8 infection.IMPORTANCEHyperoside has been reported to suppress viral infections, including herpesvirus, hepatitis B virus, infectious bronchitis virus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. However, its mechanism of action against equine herpesvirus type 8 (EHV-8) is currently unknown. Here, we demonstrated that hyperoside significantly inhibits EHV-8 adsorption and internalization in susceptible cells. This process induces HO-1 expression via c-Jun N-terminal kinase/nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2/Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 axis activation, alleviating oxidative stress and triggering an antiviral interferon response. These findings indicate that hyperoside could be very effective as a drug against EHV-8.

BACKGROUND: The carbon metabolism pathway is of paramount importance for the growth and development of plants, exerting a pivotal regulatory role in stress responses. The exacerbation of drought impacts on the plant carbon cycle due to global warming necessitates comprehensive investigation into the response mechanisms of Masson Pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.), an exemplary pioneer drought-tolerant tree, thereby establishing a foundation for predicting future forest ecosystem responses to climate change. RESULTS: The seedlings of Masson Pine were utilized as experimental materials in this study, and the transcriptome, metabolome, and photosynthesis were assessed under varying temperatures and drought intensities. The findings demonstrated that the impact of high temperature and drought on the photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate of Masson Pine seedlings was more pronounced compared to individual stressors. The analysis of transcriptome data revealed that the carbon metabolic pathways of Masson Pine seedlings were significantly influenced by high temperature and drought co-stress, with a particular impact on genes involved in starch and sucrose metabolism. The metabolome analysis revealed that only trehalose and Galactose 1-phosphate were specifically associated with the starch and sucrose metabolic pathways. Furthermore, the trehalose metabolic heat map was constructed by integrating metabolome and transcriptome data, revealing a significant increase in trehalose levels across all three comparison groups. Additionally, the PmTPS1, PmTPS5, and PmTPPD genes were identified as key regulatory genes governing trehalose accumulation. CONCLUSIONS: The combined effects of high temperature and drought on photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, transcriptome, and metabolome were more pronounced than those induced by either high temperature or drought alone. Starch and sucrose metabolism emerged as the pivotal carbon metabolic pathways in response to high temperature and drought stress in Masson pine. Trehalose along with PmTPS1, PmTPS5, and PmTPPD genes played crucial roles as metabolites and key regulators within the starch and sucrose metabolism.

Flexible composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) with inorganic electrolyte fillers dispersed in polymer electrolytes integrate the merits of the polymer and inorganic electrolytes and have attracted much attention in recent years. In order to increase the electrochemical performance, especially the low lithium (Li)-ion transference number in traditional dual-ion Li salt-containing CPEs, single-ion conductive CPEs are synthesized with a single-ion polymer conductor (SIPC) as the matrix and Li6.4 La3 Zr1.4 Ta0.6 O12 (LLZTO) particles as the active fillers. The single-ion conductive CPEs show a high Li-ion transference number (up to 0.96), high room-temperature (RT) ionic conductivity (>1.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 ), wide electrochemical stability window (>5.0 V, vs Li/Li+ ), and excellent long-term cycling stability with Li metal at RT (3200 h). Based on the SIPC-LLZTO CPE, the solid-state lithium metal batteries with LiFePO4 - and LiCoO2 -based cathodes deliver average discharge capacities of 159 mAh g-1 for 600 cycles and 119 mAh g-1 for 200 cycles at RT, respectively. This study sheds light on the design of high-performance CPEs for next-generation solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Equid herpesvirus type 8 (EqHV-8) is known to cause abortion, respiratory signs, and viral encephalitis in equines. EqHV-8 has been reported to cause serious economic losses in large-scale donkey farms in China. However, little is known about the viral replication and immune reaction in the brains and lungs of EqHV-8-induced C57BL/6J mice. We determined the pathogenicity and immune status in a mice model. The C57BL/6J mice were infected with the EqHV-8 donkey/Shandong/10/2021 strain, and the clinical signs and body weights were evaluated every day. In addition, viremia, virus loads, and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mice brains and lungs were assessed at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days post infection (dpi). Our results demonstrated that mice in the EqHV-8 infected group displayed body weight loss, dyspnea signs, and viremia. The expression of interleukin (IL)-1ß, interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-6 mRNA was increased in the brains and lungs of EqHV-8-infected mice than that in control group at 5 dpi and 7 dpi, and IL-12a expression was increased at 7 dpi. These data indicated that EqHV-8 elicited a strong cytokines response, caused neurogenic disease and respiratory signs in C57BL/6J mice, thus revealing the pathogenicity of EqHV-8.

Phormia regina (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) can colonize carcasses quickly, and its immature stages are reliable entomological evidence for the estimation of the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). There are discrepancies in the developmental data from previous studies on P. regina, and the related PMImin indicators need to be refined. We investigated the accuracy of forensic entomological evidence using development durations, growth accumulated degree hours, and larval body length variations of P. regina at seven constant temperatures ranging from 16 to 34 °C. We also established development models such as the isomorphen diagram, thermal summation model, isomegalen diagram, and body length simulation equation to assist with PMImin estimation. The developmental duration of P. regina from egg to adult at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34 °C was 840.8 ± 42.8 h, 580.1 ± 10.1 h, 390.4 ± 8.7 h, 316.8 ± 9.4 h, 291.4 ± 21.2 h, 238.4 ± 2.8 h, and 222.5 ± 5.2 h, respectively. The lower threshold temperature TL was 9.97 ± 0.50 °C, while the thermal constant K was 5052.7 ± 229 degree days. The lower developmental thresholds, intrinsic optimum temperature, and upper lethal developmental threshold obtained by the Optim SSI models were 13.15, 21.20, and 36.86 °C, respectively. This study aims to provide developmental models for P. regina aimed at common case-site temperatures in the northern provinces of China, which can be used for accurate PMImin estimation.

Megaselia scalaris (Schmitz, 1938) (Diptera: Phoridae) is a common insect in forensic science that is frequently found in indoor cases, particularly on corpses in closed environments. Although this species is useful for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin) in the absence of Calliphoridae, there is a lack of data on its development in China. Herein, we studied the development of M. scalaris exposed to seven constant temperatures ranging from 16 to 34 °C. The mean (± SD) developmental durations of M. scalaris from egg to adult stage at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34 °C were 1486.9 ± 75.3, 823.7 ± 42.8, 448.2 ± 59.8, 417.7 ± 19.7, 297.2 ± 27.3, 272.9 ± 10.4, and 253.0 ± 5.0 h, respectively. The mean (± SE) lower developmental threshold temperature (TL) and the thermal summation constant (K) were determined by a linear model as 12.69 ± 0.3 °C and 4965.8 ± 227.9-degree hours, respectively. A nonlinear model estimated the lower developmental threshold temperature, intrinsic optimum temperature, and upper lethal developmental threshold temperature as 14.58, 21.00, and 34.15 °C, respectively. We established three development models to estimate the age of the immature insect, namely the isomegalen diagram, isomorphen diagram, and thermal summation model. In addition, a regression analysis of the relationship between body length and total development time from hatching to pupariation was performed. Our findings provide a basis for applications of M. scalaris in PMImin estimations.

Transition metal boride TM2B3 is widely studied in the field of physics and materials science. However, Mn2B3 has not been found in Mn-B systems so far. Mn2B3 undergoes phase transitions from Cmcm (0-28 GPa) to C2/m (28-80 GPa) and finally to C2/c (80-200 GPa) under pressure. Among these stable phases, Cmcm- and C2/m-Mn2B3s comprise six-membered boron rings and C2/c-Mn2B3 has wavy boron chains. They all have good mechanical properties and can become potential multifunctional materials. The strong B-B covalent bonding is mainly responsible for the structural stability and hardness. Comparison of the hardness of the five TM2B3s with different bonding strengths of TM-B and B-B bonds reveals a nonlinear change in the hardness. According to the Stoner model, these structures possess ferromagnetism, and the corresponding magnetic moments are almost the same as those of GGA and GGA + U (U = 3.9 eV, J = 1 eV).

OBJECTIVE: As the predominant complication in preterm infants, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) necessitates accurate identification of infants at risk and expedited therapeutic interventions for an improved prognosis. This study evaluates the potential of Monosaccharide Composite (MC) enriched with environmental information from circulating glycans as a diagnostic biomarker for early-onset BPD, and, concurrently, appraises BPD risk in premature neonates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study incorporated 234 neonates of ≤32 weeks gestational age. Clinical data and serum samples, collected one week post-birth, were meticulously assessed. The quantification of serum-free monosaccharides and their degraded counterparts was accomplished via High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Logistic regression analysis facilitated the construction of models for early BPD diagnosis. The diagnostic potential of various monosaccharides for BPD was determined using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves, integrating clinical data for enhanced diagnostic precision, and evaluated by the Area Under the Curve (AUC). RESULTS: Among the 234 neonates deemed eligible, BPD development was noted in 68 (29.06%), with 70.59% mild (48/68) and 29.41% moderate-severe (20/68) cases. Multivariate analysis delineated several significant risk factors for BPD, including gestational age, birth weight, duration of both invasive mechanical and non-invasive ventilation, Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), pregnancy-induced hypertension, and concentrations of two free monosaccharides (Glc-F and Man-F) and five degraded monosaccharides (Fuc-D, GalN-D, Glc-D, and Man-D). Notably, the concentrations of Glc-D and Fuc-D in the moderate-to-severe BPD group were significantly diminished relative to the mild BPD group. A potent predictive capability for BPD development was exhibited by the conjunction of gestational age and Fuc-D, with an AUC of 0.96. CONCLUSION: A predictive model harnessing the power of gestational age and Fuc-D demonstrates promising efficacy in foretelling BPD development with high sensitivity (95.0%) and specificity (94.81%), potentially enabling timely intervention and improved neonatal outcomes.

Agricultural production relies heavily on the use of pesticides, which may accumulate in soil and water, posing a significant threat to the global ecological environment and biological health. Butachlor is a commonly used herbicide and environmental pollutant, which has been linked to liver and kidney damage, as well as neurological abnormalities. However, the potential impact of butachlor exposure on the gut microbiota remains understudied. Thus, our aim was to investigate the potential negative effects of butachlor exposure on host health and gut microbiota. Our results demonstrated that butachlor exposure significantly reduced the host antioxidant capacity, as evidenced by decreased levels of T-AOC, SOD, and GSH-Px, and increased levels of MDA. Serum biochemical analysis also revealed a significant increase in AST and ALT levels during butachlor exposure. Microbial analysis showed that butachlor exposure significantly reduced the abundance and diversity of gut microbiota. Furthermore, butachlor exposure also significantly altered the gut microbial composition. In conclusion, our findings indicate that butachlor exposure can have detrimental health effects, including dysregulation of antioxidant enzymes, abnormalities in transaminases, and hepatointestinal damage. Furthermore, it disrupts the gut microbial homeostasis by altering microbial composition and reducing diversity and abundance. In the context of the increasingly serious use of pesticides, this study will help provide impetus for standardizing the application of pesticides and reducing environmental pollution.

BACKGROUND: Auxin plays an important role in plant resistance to abiotic stress. The modulation of gene expression by Auxin response factors (ARFs) and the inhibition of auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (Aux/IAA) proteins play crucial regulatory roles in plant auxin signal transduction. However, whether the stress resistance of Masson pine (Pinus massoniana), as a representative pioneer species, is related to Aux/IAA and ARF genes has not been thoroughly studied and explored. RESULTS: The present study provides preliminary evidence for the regulatory role of the PmaIAA27 gene in abiotic stress response in Masson pine. We investigated the effects of drought and hormone treatments on Masson pine by examining the expression patterns of PmaIAA27 and PmaARF15 genes. Subsequently, we conducted gene cloning, functional testing using transgenic tobacco, and explored gene interactions. Exogenous auxin irrigation significantly downregulated the expression of PmaIAA27 while upregulating PmaARF15 in Masson pine seedlings. Moreover, transgenic tobacco with the PmaIAA27 gene exhibited a significant decrease in auxin content compared to control plants, accompanied by an increase in proline content - a known indicator of plant drought resistance. These findings suggest that overexpression of the PmaIAA27 gene may enhance drought resistance in Masson pine. To further investigate the interaction between PmaIAA27 and PmaARF15 genes, we performed bioinformatics analysis and yeast two-hybrid experiments which revealed interactions between PB1 structural region of PmaARF15 and PmaIAA27. CONCLUSION: The present study provides new insights into the regulatory functions of Aux/IAA and ARF genes in Masson pine. Overexpression of PmaIAA gene may have negative effects on the growth of Masson pine, but may improve the drought resistance. Therefore, this study has great application prospects.

Endophytic bacteria are an important biological control for nematodes. We isolated the nematicidal Bacillus cereus NJSZ-13 from healthy Pinus elliottii trunks. Bioassay experiments showed killing of all tested nematodes by proteins from the NJSZ-13 culture filtrate within 72 h. Degradation of the nematode cuticles was observed, suggesting the action of extracellular bacterial enzymes. The responsible protease was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, and SDS-PAGE. The protease had a molecular weight of 28 kDa and optimal activity at 55 °C and pH 9, indicating an alkaline protease. The study suggests the potential for using this B. cereus NJSZ-13 strain protease to prevent pinewood nematode infection.

Magnesium alloys are among the most promising materials for medical implants, and by preparing a superhydrophobic surface, the rate of corrosion can be effectively slowed down and durability be improved. However, the anticorrosion surfaces are inevitable to be damaged for the conventional micro-nanostructured superhydrophobic magnesium alloys, which highly limits their application prospects. This work proposes the development of a Terracotta Warrior pit superhydrophobic structure (TWPSS), consisting of a wall structure with a Terracotta Warrior-like pit and a lotus-like surface papillae structure within the wall. For the first time, top-down laser ablation of the pits to prepare the lotus-like surface papilla structure is used in conjunction with a bottom-up laser-guided melt stacking of the raised wall structure to achieve rapid fabrication of a TWPSS on a magnesium alloy surface. The Cassie-Baxter-based design of the wall structure spacing effectively protects the internal lotus-like surface papillae from damage and the disappearance of low surface energy material, and the results show that the superhydrophobic surfaces of magnesium alloys have excellent mechanical durability and repairability. In addition, it was found that the recast layer and laser melting stacked layers produced on the surface of the alloy during femtosecond laser processing refined the grain size of the magnesium alloy and effectively suppressed the corrosion rate. The combination of the superhydrophobic gas layer and the resulting grain refinement slowed down the corrosion of the magnesium alloy. Thus, the rapid preparation of TWPSS structures with mechanical durability and corrosion resistance by femtosecond lasers expands the clinical applications of superhydrophobic surface magnesium alloys in medical devices.

Forensic entomology case reports are the product of rapid development in the field, the widespread acceptance of the science and the application of forensic entomological knowledge. In this study, we retrospectively summarized information derived from 307 forensic entomology case reports from 1935 to 2022 from a global perspective. Our checklist of relevant information included insect species, specific indoor or outdoor preferences, preferred temperatures, and stages of body decomposition. Finally, a concept and calculation method for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation accuracy was proposed. There were 232 cases using insect developmental data and 28 cases using succession patterns to estimate PMI. A total of 146 species of insects were involved in the cases, of which 62.3% were Diptera and 37.7% were Coleoptera. Postmortem intervals were estimated from eggs in 4 cases, larvae in 180 cases, pupae in 45 cases, and puparia in 38 cases. The majority of cases were from June to October, and the average number of species mentioned in the cases was more at 15-30 °C. Considering the standardization of application, in the majority of cases, insect evidence was collected by other personnel and sent to forensic entomologists, there was a delay in the sampling, and the scene or meteorological data were directly used without correcting. Our data shows that there are still many shortcomings in the universality and standardization of forensic entomology in its practical application.

Equid herpesvirus 8 (EHV-8), also known as asinine herpesvirus type 3 (AHV-3), can cause severe respiratory disease, abortion in mares, and neurological disorders. There is limited information on the prevalence of EHV-8 in donkeys in China. In this study, we investigated EHV-8 infection in donkeys using PCR, resulting in the identification of a field strain, termed EHV-8 SD2020113, which was isolated using RK-13 cells and characterized by high-throughput sequencing and transmission electron microscopy. Our data indicated that 38.7% (457/1180) of donkeys showed the presence of EHV-8 in blood samples. Analysis of the ORF70 gene showed the highest similarity (99.8-99.9% identity) to EHV-8 IR/2015/40 (MF431614.1) and SDLC66 (MW816102), and, in phylogenetic analysis, it clustered with EHV-8 SDLC66 from China. The findings of this study indicate that EHV-8 is likely to represent a threat to the donkey industry, and breeders and veterinarians who care for donkey farms should be aware of this.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to estimate predictors for vaginal birth following balloon catheter induction of labor (IOL) in women with one previous cesarean section (CS) and an unfavorable cervix. METHODS: This 4-year retrospective cohort study was conducted in Longhua District Central Hospital in Shenzhen China, between January 2015 and December 2018. Patients with one previous CS and a current singleton-term pregnancy who underwent balloon catheter cervical ripening and IOL were enrolled. Univariate analysis was used to identify predictive factors associated with vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC). Binary logistic regression was further used to identify which factors were independently associated with the outcome measure. The primary outcome was VBAC, which was a successful trial of labor after cesarean delivery (TOLAC) following IOL. RESULTS: A total of 69.57% (208/299) of the women who planned for IOL had VBAC. In the final binary logistic regression equation, lower fetal weight (< 4000 g) (odds ratio [OR]5.26; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.09,13.27), lower body mass index (BMI,<30 kg/m2) (OR 2.27; CI 1.21, 4.26), Bishop score after cervical ripening > 6 (OR 1.94; CI 1.37, 2.76) remained independently associated with an increased chance of VBAC. CONCLUSIONS: The influencing factors of VBAC following IOL were fetal weight, BMI, and Bishop score after cervical ripening. Adequate individualized management and assessment of the IOL may help improve the VBAC rate.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have revealed that Gleason score upgrading (GSU) was closely related to an increased biochemical recurrence rate and adverse oncologic outcomes in patients with prostate cancer (PC). Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to determine the predictive factors for GSU following radical prostatectomy (RP). METHODS: We performed an extensive literature search using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane in September 2022. In order to calculate the pooled odds ratio (OR), standardized mean difference (SMD), and 95% confidence intervals, a fixed effect or a DerSimonian and Laird random effect was applied. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies included 18,745 PC patients that were available for further analysis. Our results revealed that GSU was significantly correlated with age (summary SMD = 0.13; p = 0.004), prostate volume (PV) (summary SMD = -0.19;p < 0.001), preoperative PSA (p-PSA) (summary SMD = 0.18; p < 0.001), PSA density (PSAD) (summary SMD = 0.40; p < 0.001), number of positive cores (summary SMD = 0.28; p = 0.001), percentage of positive cores (summary SMD = 0.36; p < 0.001), Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) scores (>3/≤3) (summary OR = 2.27; p = 0.001), clinical T stage (>T2/≤T2) (summary OR = 1.73; p < 0.001), positive surgical margins (PSM) (summary OR = 2.12; p < 0.001), extraprostatic extension (EPE) (summary OR = 2.73; p < 0.001), pathological T stage (>T2/≤T2) (summary OR = 3.45; p < 0.001), perineural invasion (PNI) (summary OR = 2.40; p = 0.008), and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (summary SMD = 0.50; p < 0.001). However, we found that GSU was not significantly correlated with body mass index (BMI) (summary SMD = -0.02; p = 0.602). Moreover, our sensitivity and subgroup analyses showed that the findings were reliable. CONCLUSIONS: Age, PV, p-PSA, PSAD, number of positive cores, percentage of positive cores, PI-RADS score, clinical T stage, PSM, EPE, pathological T stage, PNI, and NLR are independent factors predicting GSU following RP. The findings may be helpful in risk stratification and personalized treatment in PC patients.

Pentatrichomonas hominis (P. hominis) is a zoonotic parasite that affects a wide range of hosts, causing gastrointestinal diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of P. hominis among caged foxes and raccoon dogs and the effect of P. hominis on the gut microbiota in female foxes. A total of 893 fresh fecal samples were collected from the Hebei and Henan Provinces in China. P. hominis was screened based on 18S rRNA gene expression via nested PCR. The difference in the gut microbiota between nine P. hominis-positive and nine P. hominis-negative samples was investigated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The total prevalence of P. hominis infection in foxes and raccoon dogs was 31.7% (283/893). The prevalence rates of P. hominis infection were 28.2% (88/312) and 33.6% (195/581) in foxes and raccoon dogs, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that all P. hominis strains detected in foxes and raccoon dogs in the present study were the zoonotic genotype CC1. Moreover, compared with those in the P. hominis-negative group, the diversity of the gut microbiota in the P. hominis-positive group was lower, and the abundance of Firmicutes and the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) in the P. hominis-positive group were lower than those in the P. hominis-negative group. We speculate that these differences may be due to indigestion and diarrhea in infected female foxes. Overall, the present study evaluated the prevalence of P. hominis in foxes and raccoon dogs in the Henan and Hebei Provinces and revealed that P. hominis infection interrupted the diversity of the gut microbiota in female foxes.

Microbes play a crucial role in maintaining health by aiding in digestion, regulating the immune system, producing essential vitamins, and preventing the colonization of harmful bacteria. The stability of the microbiota is, therefore, necessary for overall well-being. However, several environmental factors can negatively affect the microbiota, including exposure to industrial waste, i.e., chemicals, heavy metals, and other pollutants. Over the past few decades, industries have grown significantly, but the wastewater from those industries has seriously harmed the environment and the health of living beings both locally and globally. The current study investigated the effects of salt-contaminated water exposure on gut microbiota in chickens. According to our findings, amplicon sequencing showed 453 OTUs across control and salt-contaminated water exposure groups. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteriota were the most dominant phyla in the chickens regardless of treatment. However, exposure to salt-contaminated water resulted in a remarkable decline in gut microbial diversity. While, the beta diversity revealed substantial differences in major gut microbiota components. Moroever, microbial taxonomic investigation indicated that the proportions of one bacterial phylum and nineteen bacterial genera significantly decreased. Also, the levels of one bacterial phylum and thirty three bacterial genera markedly increased under salt-contaminated water exposure, which indicates a disruption in gut microbial homeostasis. Hence the current study provides a basis to explore the effects of salt-contaminated water exposure on the health of vertebrate species.

Multi-focus image fusion plays an important role in the application of computer vision. In the process of image fusion, there may be blurring and information loss, so it is our goal to obtain high-definition and information-rich fusion images. In this paper, a novel multi-focus image fusion method via local energy and sparse representation in the shearlet domain is proposed. The source images are decomposed into low- and high-frequency sub-bands according to the shearlet transform. The low-frequency sub-bands are fused by sparse representation, and the high-frequency sub-bands are fused by local energy. The inverse shearlet transform is used to reconstruct the fused image. The Lytro dataset with 20 pairs of images is used to verify the proposed method, and 8 state-of-the-art fusion methods and 8 metrics are used for comparison. According to the experimental results, our method can generate good performance for multi-focus image fusion.
