RESUMEN

During the trial production of Armillarisin A for injection (AA-I), unidentified needle-like yellow-brown crystals were occasionally observed. Here, we report an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) method for determining the source of the visible foreign bodies in the formulations of Armillarisin A active pharmaceutical ingredient (AA-API). AA-API, photolyzed samples, the intermediate polymer, and the excipient analyzed determined after the separation on a Waters Symmetry C18 (3.5 µm, 4.6 × 75 mm) column with a mobile phase consisting of a methanol/acetic acid (0.1 mol/L) aqueous solution (50:50). Furthermore, the crystal type of the visible foreign bodies, the intermediate polymer and AA-API were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that the characteristics of the visible foreign solids were the same as those of AA-API as regards UPLC peak position (368 nm) and MS spectrum in negative ion detection mode. The visible foreign solids were thus identified as unpolymerized crystals of AA-API and were attributed to AA-API itself. The results showed that the production process could be improved by changing the stirring method and frequency as well as by optimizing the polymerization temperature to ensure the safety, stability, and control of the product quality in the stage of batch production.

Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), an intricate photoprotective process, plays fundamental roles in maintaining plant fitness. The PsbS protein is essential for the rapid induction of NPQ, and acts in a dose-dependent manner in leaves. However, little information is known on the transcriptional control of PsbS in land plants. Here we demonstrated that the expression of OsPsbS1 is directly upregulated by OsbZIP72 while repressed by OsMYBS2 in rice. We identified a new cis-element GACAGGTG in japonica OsPsbS1 promoter, to which OsbZIP72 could strongly bind and activate the expression of OsPsbS1. The new cis-element CTAATC confers specific binding for OsMYBS2 in japonica OsPsbS1 promoter. OsbZIP72 can be activated by SAPK1, and acts depending on the abscisic acid (ABA) signalling pathway. GF14A protein affects the repression activity of OsMYBS2 by regulating its nucleocytoplasmic shuttling, and Ser53 is necessary for OsMYBS2 to be retained in the cytoplasm. The inducibility of OsPsbS1 transcription under high light conditions in OsbZIP72 knockout lines was greatly impaired, while the repression of OsPsbS1 transcription under a low light environment in OsMYBS2 knockout lines was significantly alleviated. These results reveal cross-talk among NPQ processes, the ABA signalling pathway and abiotic stress signalling. The elaborate mechanisms may help enhance photoprotection and improve photosynthesis in rice.

A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effects of Schizochytrium sp. on growth performance, antioxidant capacity and non-specific immunity in golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus).Two diets were formulated with or without Schizochytrium sp. supplemented (D1:0% and D2: 3%) to feed fish for 8 weeks. Results showed that growth performance, feed intake and survival rate increased significantly with Schizochytrium sp. supplemented (P < 0.05). Feed coefficient rate (FCR) of golden pompano fed the diet supplemented with Schizochytrium sp. was significantly lower than that of fish fed the control diet (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found in antioxidant capacity both in transcriptional level, including nclear factor erythroid-2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), Kelch-like-ECH-associated protein (keap1), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and enzyme activity, such as total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (P > 0.05). Gut amylase and lipase were significantly higher in dietary Schizochytrium sp. supplemented treatment than that in control group (P < 0.05). The relative peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) expression level in liver was significantly higher in Schizochytrium sp supplemented treatment than that in control one (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), IL-1R-associated kinases 4 (IRAK4), interferon regulating Factor 3 (IRF3), interferon regulating Factor 3(IRF7) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) were significantly lower in Schizochytrium sp. supplemented treatment than that in control one (P < 0.05). In Schizochytrium sp. supplemented diet, golden pompano had significantly longer villi length than that in control diet (P < 0.05); muscle thickness in Schizochytrium sp. supplemented diet was thicker than that in control one (P < 0.05) and there were more goblet cells in Schizochytrium sp. treatment (P < 0.05). After the rearing trial, an air exposure trial was conducted. Results showed that the air-exposure mortality (AEM) and mRNA expression level of Nrf2, keap1, CAT, GSH-PX and HO-1 showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). These results indicated that dietary Schizochytrium sp. improved the growth performance and non-specific immunity of golden pompano while made no difference to antioxidant capacity.

This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of dietary mixed probiotics on growth, non-specific immunity, intestinal morphology and microbiota of juvenile pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Juvenile shrimp (initial body weight 1.21 ±â€¯0.01 g) were fed diets containing graded probiotics (F1: 0 mg/kg probiotics; F2: 1000 mg/kg probiotics; F3: 2000 mg/kg probiotics; F4: 4000 mg/kg compound probiotics; F5: 6000 mg/kg probiotics; F6: 8000 mg/kg probiotics) for 8 weeks. The result of this trial showed that the growth performance (SGR, WG, FBW) of shrimp fed diets containing probiotics (F2∼F6) were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed diet without supplemental probiotics (F1) (P < 0.05), and the highest values of the growth performance (SGR, WG, FBW) and lowest FCR were found in shrimp fed the diet containing 2000 mg/kg probiotics. Total antioxidant capacity of shrimp fed diet F2 and F3 were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the basal diets (P < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase in F4 treatment was significantly higher than that of basal treatment (P < 0.05). Catalase of shrimp in all probiotics supplemented (F2∼F6) treatments were significantly higher than that of the control one (F1) (P < 0.05). Malondialdehyde in F5 groups was significantly lower than that of F1 groups (P < 0.05). Alkline phosphatase and acid phosphatase in F3 treatments were significantly higher than those of the basal one (P < 0.05). Lysozyme of shrimp fed F2∼F6 were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed F1 diet (P < 0.05). The lipase and amylase activities in 2000 mg/kg probiotics groups showed the highest activities and were significantly higher than that of control one (P < 0.05). Intestinal villi height in F3∼F6 treatments were significantly higher than that of control one (P < 0.05). Alpha diversity indices including observed species, chao1, ACE and shannon indices showed that F2 and F3 groups had higher microbial diversity in their intestines, both richness and evenness. PCA plot showed that there was a clear shift of F2 and F3 groups from the control groups in microbial community structure. The dominant phyla in pacific white shrimp are proteobacteria, bacteroidetes and actinobacteria, the dominant genus were algoriphagus and vibrio. As the probiotics increased, the gemmatimonadetes, acidobacteria, deltaproteobacteria and xanthomonadales firstly increased and then decreased, with the highest content in F2 group, which was no significant difference to F3 group (P > 0.05) while significantly higher than other groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the supplement of mixed species probiotics can promote growth performance, enhance the non-specific immunity, influence the microbiota of the pacific white shrimps and the recommended optimum dosage in diet of Litopenaeus vannamei was 2000 mg/kg.

As a new dosage form, coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) soft capsules are easily absorbed and utilized by the human body. Co-Q10 soft capsules can effectively improve the bioavailability and reduce medical costs for patients. A main concern about Co-Q10 as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is how to control the total quantity of related substances. In this article, according to the degradation pattern of the API, the most easily degradable impurity (impurity X) in the sample was prepared and its chemical structure was determined. Furthermore, a simple and accurate method was developed for the determination of related substances and to avert the interference of excipient ingredients in Co-Q10 soft capsules. The approach was validated adequately and the primary impurity X was confirmed accurately. The limit of total quantity of related substances (less than 1%) could be revised to the level of specific impurity X being no more than 0.5%, in this effective quality control method of Co-Q10 soft capsules. The revised level is suggested to be included in the corresponding standard of the supplement taken from the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (2015 edition). This can provide a feasible method for the relevant enterprises and regulatory authorities to control the related substances of coenzyme Q10 soft capsules.

Two trials were conducted to determine the effects of dietary macroalgae Porphyra haitanensis on growth, immunity and intestinal microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei. In trial 1, shrimp (mean initial wet weight about 0.64 g) were fed with seven diets (P0, P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 and P6) containing 0% (basal diet), 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% and 6% P. haitanensis in triplicate for 60 days. Growth performance (weight gain, WG; specific growth rate, SGR) of shrimp fed the P4 diet were significantly higher than that of shrimp fed P0, P5 and P6 diets (P < 0.05) but without significant differences with shrimp fed P1-P3 diets (P > 0.05). Hepatopancreas phenoloxidase (PO) activity of shrimp fed the P. haitanensis containing diets was significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the basal diet (P0) (P < 0.05). Total haemocyte count (THC) of shrimp fed basal diet (P0) was significantly lower than that of shrimp fed diets containing P. haitanensis. Our results declared that dietary P. haitanensis supplementation increases the abundance of beneficial bacterials such as Nitrosopumilus, Marinobacter or Bifidobacterium and reduces the abundance of harmful bacterias such as Vibrio, and especially pronounced in P4 diet treatment. In trial 2, a WSSV injection challenge test was conducted for 7-day after the rearing trial and shrimp survival was also compared among treatments. A sudden shrimp death was found from the 4th day, and values of survival of shrimp fed the P3-P4 diets were higher than that of shrimp fed other diets during 4-7 days challenge test. The immune response in trial 2 were characterized by higher superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) and PO activities, lower THC and higher HCT compared to levels found in trial 1. In conclusion, suitable dietary P. haitanensis could enhance the growth performance, antioxidant capacity and alter total bacterial numbers or microbial diversity of L. vannamei and furthermore reduce oxidative stress and immune depression challenged by WSSV injection stress, and the level of P. haitanensis supplemented in the diet should be between 2.51% and 3.14%.

Skin lightening among Eurasians is thought to have been a convergence occurring independently in Europe and East Asia as an adaptation to high latitude environments. Among Europeans, several genes responsible for such lightening have been found, but the information available for East Asians is much more limited. Here, a genome-wide comparison between dark-skinned Africans and Austro-Asiatic speaking aborigines and light-skinned northern Han Chinese identified the pigmentation gene OCA2, showing unusually deep allelic divergence between these groups. An amino acid substitution (His615Arg) of OCA2 prevalent in most East Asian populations-but absent in Africans and Europeans-was significantly associated with skin lightening among northern Han Chinese. Further transgenic and targeted gene modification analyses of zebrafish and mouse both exhibited the phenotypic effect of the OCA2 variant manifesting decreased melanin production. These results indicate that OCA2 plays an important role in the convergent skin lightening of East Asians during recent human evolution.

RESUMEN

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor. In the clinic, usual strategies for OS treatment include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, all of these therapies have complications that cannot be ignored. Therefore, the search for better OS treatments is urgent. Black phosphorus (BP), a rising star of 2D inorganic nanoparticles, has shown excellent results in OS therapy due to its outstanding photothermal, photodynamic, biodegradable and biocompatible properties. This review aims to present current advances in the use of BP nanoparticles in OS therapy, including the synthesis of BP nanoparticles, properties of BP nanoparticles, types of BP nanoparticles, and modification strategies for BP nanoparticles. In addition, we have discussed comprehensively the application of BP in OS therapy, including single, dual, and multimodal synergistic OS therapies, as well as studies about bone regeneration and antibacterial properties. Finally, we have summarized the conclusions, limitations and perspectives of BP nanoparticles for OS therapy.

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a special class of noncoding RNA molecules and the latest research hotspot in the field of RNA. CircRNA molecules have a closed loop structure, which is not affected by RNA exonuclease and has the characteristics of more stable expression. Previous studies have shown that circRNA molecules are rich in microRNA (miRNA) binding sites and act as miRNA sponges in cells. By interacting with miRNAs associated with tumors and other diseases, circRNAs play an important regulatory role. However, circRNAs have recently been found to have small open reading frames that enable them to encode peptides/proteins. These proteins have been reported to play an important role in the mechanism of regulation of a variety of diseases and have great potential in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In this review, we summarize the mechanism of action of the newly discovered circRNA-coding proteins since 2022 and briefly describe their research process. In addition, we also discuss the prediction model of the functional sites and encoded proteins of circRNAs, which provides a potential idea for future research on circRNAs.

The management and definitive treatment of critical-size bone defects in severe trauma, tumor resection and congenital malformation are troublesome for orthopedic surgeons and patients worldwide without recognized good treatment strategies. Researchers and clinicians are working to develop new strategies to treat these problems. This review aims to summarize the techniques used by additive manufacturing scaffolds loaded with BMP-2 to promote osteogenesis and to analyze the current status and trends in relevant clinical translation. Optimize composite scaffold design to enhance bone regeneration through printing technology, material selection, structure design and loading methods of BMP-2 to advance the clinical therapeutic bone repair field.


Some people have considerable bone gaps because of accidents, cancer or congenital disabilities. These gaps are difficult to heal and can cause many problems. Doctors and scientists are trying to find new ways to help these people. One way is to make artificial pieces of bone that can fit into the gaps and help the bone grow back. These are made using special machines that can print different shapes and materials. They also contain a protein called BMP-2, which allows the bones to grow faster. This article examines how these parts are made and how they can be used in patients. It also suggests how they might be improved in the future.

Present study investigates the impact of chitosan microspheres-based controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer (Cm-CRNFs) on biological characteristics of Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis (Chinese cabbage) and soil. The study was carried out under various four treatments, urea (0.8033 g), blank chitosan microspheres (without urea), Cm-CRNFs (0.8033 g), and a control group (CK). The results indicated that Cm-CRNFs significantly prolonged the nitrogen release and enhanced the plant shoot length, shoot diameter, number of branches, pods, total amino acids, and vitamin C of Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis as well as increased the soil nutrient availability. Chao index of bacterial diversity analysis showed a significant reduction of 15.89 % in Cm-CRNFs, but the Shannon index value in Cm-CRNFs was increased by 23.55 % compared to CK. Furthermore, Cm-CRNFs treatment significantly influenced genus richness level of Arthrobacter, Archangium, Bacillus, and Flavihumibacter. Moreover, relative abundance of bacteria significantly enhanced Cm-CRNFs, including Acidobacteriota, Acitinobacteriota, Cloroflexi, Cyanobacteria, and Patescibacteria. Soil enzyme activity such as: urease, acid phosphatase, and catalase enzymes in Cm-CRNFs and urea treatment significantly increased. Besides, other enzymes such as: cellulase and ß-glucosidase activity decreased in the Cm-CRNFs treatment. It was concluded that Cm-CRNFs potentially prolonged discharge of micro/macronutrients and improved soil bacterial diversity, which ultimately enhanced the soil fertility and improved the soil enzyme activity.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is a serious complication for patients. Some joint surgeons have tried to use vancomycin powder (VP) in total knee and total hip arthroplasty to prevent postoperative PJI, but its effect is still not clear. At present, there is no meta-analysis that specifically analyses the effect of different doses of vancomycin powder on the incidence of PJI. METHODS: We carried out a search based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and identified the studies we needed. Review Manager (RevMan) 5.3 software was employed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The analysis of primary TKA (PTKA) showed that using 1 g (RR 0.38, 95% CI 0.22-0.67 [P = 0.0008]) and 2 g (RR 0.48, 95% CI 0.31-0.74 [P = 0.0008]) of vancomycin powder in primary TKA (PTKA) could all significantly prevent PJI. The analysis of primary THA (PTHA) showed that using 1 g (RR 0.37, 95% CI 0.17-0.80 [P = 0.01]) of vancomycin powder effectively decreased the incidence of PJI, while using 2 g (RR 1.02, 95% CI 0.53-1.97 [P = 0.94]) of vancomycin powder had no significant effect on preventing PJI. Because the data were abnormal, we believed the conclusion that using 2 g of vancomycin powder in primary THA had no effect on preventing PJI was doubtful. Using vancomycin powder in revision TKA (RTKA) significantly reduced the PJI rate (RR 0.33, 95% CI 0.14-0.77 [P = 0.01]), similar to revision THA (RTHA) (RR 0.37, 95% CI 0.14-0.96 [P = 0.04]). CONCLUSIONS: In primary TKA, both 1 g and 2 g of vancomycin powder can effectively prevent PJI. In primary THA, using 1 g of vancomycin powder is a better choice, while the effect of using 2 g of vancomycin powder is not clear, and a more prospective randomized controlled trial should be done to verify it. In revision TKA and revision THA, vancomycin powder is a good choice to prevent PJI.

The vascular bundles play important roles in transportation of photoassimilate, and the number, size, and capacity of vascular bundles influence the transportation efficiency. Dissecting the genetic basis may help to make better use of naturally occurring vascular bundle variations. Here, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the vascular bundle variations in a worldwide collection of 529 Oryza sativa accessions. A total of 42 and 93 significant association loci were identified in the neck panicle and flag leaf, respectively. The introgression lines showing extreme values of the target traits harbored at least one GWAS signal, indicating the reliability of the GWAS loci. Based on the data of near-isogenic lines and transgenic plants, Grain number, plant height, and heading date7 (Ghd7) was identified as a major locus for the natural variation of vascular bundles in the neck panicle at the heading stage. In addition, Narrow leaf1 (NAL1) was found to influence the vascular bundles in both the neck panicle and flag leaf, and the effects of the major haplotypes of NAL1 were characterized. The loci or candidate genes identified would help to improve vascular bundle system in rice breeding.

Since domestication, rice has cultivated in a wide range of latitudes with different day lengths. Selection of diverse natural variations in heading date and photoperiod sensitivity is critical for adaptation of rice to different geographical environments. To unravel the genetic architecture underlying natural variation of rice flowering time, we conducted a genome wide association study (GWAS) using several association analysis strategies with a diverse worldwide collection of 529 O. sativa accessions. Heading date was investigated in three environments under long-day or short-day conditions, and photosensitivity was evaluated. By dividing the whole association panel into subpopulations and performing GWAS with both linear mixed models and multi-locus mixed-models, we revealed hundreds of significant loci harboring novel candidate genes as well as most of the known flowering time genes. In total, 127 hotspots were detected in at least two GWAS. Universal genetic heterogeneity was found across subpopulations. We further detected abundant interactions between GWAS loci, especially in indica. Functional gene families were revealed from enrichment analysis of the 127 hotspots. The results demonstrated a rich of genetic interactions in rice flowering time genes and such epistatic interactions contributed to the large portions of missing heritability in GWAS. It suggests the increased complexity of genetic heterogeneity might discount the power of increasing the sample sizes in GWAS.

Heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) is a stress-inducible enzyme that mediates antioxidative and cytoprotective effects to maintain cellular redox homeostasis. In the present study, the full sequence of HO-1 was cloned from golden pompano(Trachinotus ovatus) by RT-PCR and RACE-PCR. The full cDNA sequence of HO-1 was 1349 bp in length which comprised of a 726 bp open reading frame (ORF) preceded by 262 bp 5'-untranslated region (UTR), and followed by a 360 bp 3'UTR, encoding 241 amino acid residues. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that HO-1 showed highest similarity to that of Takifugu rubripes. Tissue distribution analysis showed that the expression level of HO-1 was relatively high in heart, liver and spleen. A trial was conducted to investigate the response of Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway to oxidative stress induced by copper. The results showed that mRNA expression of NF-E2-related nuclear factor2 (Nrf2), Kelch-like-ECH-associated protein1 (keap1), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), HO-1, NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) and Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) all significantly increased in copper treated group than that in the control group. This work provides new insight into the molecular mechanism underlying the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway in oxidative response in T. ovatus.

The present study investigated the potential mechanisms of astaxanthin in the regulation of gastrointestinal immunity and retinal mitochondrial function of golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). Triplicate groups of juvenile T. ovatus (mean initial weight: 6.03 ± 0.01 g) were fed one of six diets (D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, and D6) for 8 weeks, with each diet containing various concentrations of astaxanthin (0, 0.0005, 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, or 0.1%, respectively). Growth performance of fish fed the D2-D5 diets was higher than that of fish fed the D1 diet; however, growth performance and survival of fish deteriorated sharply in fish fed the D6 diet. Gut villus in fish fed the D2-D5 diets were significantly longer and wider than that of fish fed the D6 diet. Feeding with D2-D5 diets led to increased abundance of Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Oceanobacillus, Lactococcus, Halomonas, Lactobacillus, and Psychrobacter while abundance of Vibrio and Bacterium decreased. Additionally, feeding with the D6 diet resulted in a sharp decline in Pseudomonas and Lactobacillus abundance and a sharp increase in Vibrio abundance. A low dissolved oxygen environment (DO, 1.08 mg/L) was conducted for 10 h after the rearing trial. No fish mortality was observed for any of the diet treatments. Lysozyme (LZY) activity in fish fed the D6 diet decreased sharply and was significantly lower than that in other groups. ROS production also decreased sharply in fish fed the D6 diet. Moreover, the conjunctiva and sclera in the fish fed the D6 diet were indistinguishable. Suitable dietary astaxanthin supplementation levels (0.005-0.1%) exerting a neuroprotective effect from low dissolved oxygen environments is due to up-regulated expression of anti-apoptotic factors, such as phosphorylated Bcl-2-associated death promoter (pBAD), phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3ß (pGSK-3ß), Bcl-2 extra large (Bcl-xL), and down-regulated expression of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) pro-apoptotic factor in retinas. Furthermore, suitable dietary astaxanthin levels (0.0005-0.01%) suppressed up-regulation of critical mitochondrial components, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), while excessive astaxanthin supplementation produces the opposite effect. In brief, high-dose astaxanthin arouses and aggravates low dissolved oxygen-induced inflammation, oxidative stress, intestinal disorder, retinal apoptosis, and retinal mitochondrial dysfunction in T. ovatus. Second-degree polynomial regression of WG indicated that the optimum dietary astaxanthin for juvenile T. ovatus is 0.049%.

A nutritional feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of shrimp paste on feeding attractiveness, growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, immune-related genes and intestinal morphology in hybrid snakehead (Channa maculata ♀ × Channa argus ♂). Two diets were formulated with or without shrimp paste supplementation (D1:0% and D2: 3%) to feed fish for 8 weeks. Results showed that growth performance (FBW, WG and SGR) and feed intake (FI) significantly increased with shrimp paste supplemented (P < 0.05), while FCR and SR of hybrid snakehead fed diets supplemented with shrimp paste or not showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). Gut lipase and amylase activities were significantly higher in diet supplemented with shrimp paste than that in control one (P < 0.05). Hepatic antioxidant statuses of hybrid snakehead fed dietary shrimp paste or not showed no significant differences in total antioxidant capacity, malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase of fish (P > 0.05). Results showed that fish fed diet with shrimp paste supplemented did not show significant difference in expression of GR, IκB, P65 and IL8 than that in control group (P > 0.05). There are significantly more goblet cells in shrimp paste supplemented diet than that in control diet (P < 0.05). However, villi length and muscle thickness showed no significant difference compared to control diet (P > 0.05). The results indicated that dietary 3% shrimp paste supplementation improved the growth performance of hybrid snakehead by enhancing feed intake (FI) while made no difference to antioxidant capacity and immunity.

BACKGROUND: Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is a common chronic condition, especially in children. Ocular symptoms are often overlooked during treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (ARC). Pediatric ARC can be effectively treated using sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), which is a guideline-recommended safe treatment approach. However, the therapeutic efficacy of SLIT in terms of ameliorating eye symptoms has not been effectively evaluated. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the use of SLIT for infants, children, and adolescents (aged from 3 to 18 years) with AC or ARC. We searched the Cochrane Library database, EMBASE, and Medline from November 1990 to 2017 to find papers dealing with the effects of SLIT on pediatric AC or ARC. We used standardized mean differences (SMDs) to assess therapeutic effects, employing a random effects model. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. The I2 metric was used to evaluate heterogeneity. RESULTS: In total, 13 clinical RCTs were included in our meta-analysis. SLIT reduced ocular symptoms to a level below that of controls (SMD = -0.21; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.41 to -0.01; p = 0.04; I2 = 55%). Notably, on subgroup analysis, SLIT clearly reduced pollen-induced pediatric AC (SMD = -0.36; 95% CI, -0.53 to -0.19; p < 0.0001; I2 = 25%) but not mite-induced AC (SMD = 0.20; 95% CI, -0.20 to 0.60; p = 0.34; I2 = 46%). CONCLUSION: SLIT relieved ocular symptoms in children with ARC or AC. To confirm these results, future meta-analyses should evaluate high-quality, large-scale population-based trials.

The study was conducted to compare and evaluate effects of four different macro-algaes on growth, immune response, and intestinal microbiota of Litopenaeus vannamei. In the rearing trial 1, shrimp were fed five diets containing four sources of macro-algaes for 8 weeks, named D1 (without macro-algae), D2 (Porphyra haitanensis), D3 (Undaria pinnatifida), D4 (Saccharina japonica), and D5 (Gracilaria lemaneiformis), respectively. Growth performance of shrimp in D5 diet was significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the control and D4 diet (P < 0.05); however, there is no significant difference among D2, D3, and D5 diets (P > 0.05). Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter from the D2, D3, and D5 diets were significantly higher than that from the control and D4 diets (P < 0.05). Supplementary macro-algaes enhanced hepatopancreas immunity through positively increasing total antioxidant status (TAS) and prophenoloxidase activity (ProPO), as well as up-regulating the hepatopancreas RNA expression of ProPO and IκBα and down-regulating the expression of transforming growth factor ß. Furthermore, dietary macro-algaes modified intestinal microbiota of L. vannamei, boosting the relative abundance of beneficial bacterial such as Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Bacillaceae, and decreasing those detrimental bacterial such as Gammaproteobacteria and Vibrionaceae. In the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) challenge trial, shrimps were injected for 6-day after the rearing trial. On the fourth day, shrimp death started to occur, and the mortality in D2, D3, and D5 diets was significantly lower than that in control and SJ diets during 4-6 challenged days (P < 0.05). Dietary macro-algaes ameliorated hepatopancreas damage in L. vannamei by increasing TAS and ProPO activities and decreasing SOD activity, inhibiting the lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde), as well as regulating the immune-related genes expression. Taken together, dietary macro-algaes availably relieved enterohepatic oxidative damage by improving antioxidant ability and immunity and regulated intestinal microbiota in L. vannamei. These results indicated that G. lemaneiformis is the most suitable macro-algae and then followed by U. pinnatifida and P. haitanensis as the feed ingredient for L. vannamei.
