RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: The genetic basis underlying spawning abilities in the Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, remains largely unexplored. To investigate genetic variations potentially related to reproductive performance, a systematic bioinformatic analysis was conducted to identify structural variations (SVs) with different polymorphic spectra in P. vannamei with high fertility (HF) and low fertility (LF). RESULTS: A total of 2,323 and 1,859 SV events were identified exclusively in the HF and LF groups, respectively. These SVs were mapped to 277 genes in the HF group and 231 genes in the LF group. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis based on SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism) and SVs revealed several neural-related processes, suggesting the importance of neural regulation in reproduction. Notably, we identified a set of promising genes, including Cttn, Spast, Ppp4c, Spire1, Lhcgr, and Ftz-f1, which may enhance fertility in shrimp. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study is the first to establish a link between SVs and reproductive traits in P. vannamei. The promising genes discovered have the potential to serve as crucial markers for enhancing reproductive traits through targeted genotyping.

LiMn1-yFeyPO4 (LMFP) is a significant and cost-effective cathode material for Li-ion batteries, with a higher working voltage than LiFePO4 (LFP) and improved safety features compared to layered oxide cathodes. However, its commercial application faces challenges due to a need for a synthesis process to overcome the low Li-ion diffusion kinetics and complex phase transitions. Herein, a solid-state synthesis process using LFP and nano LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 (MF73) is proposed. The larger LFP acts as a structural framework fused with nano-MF73, preserving the morphology and high performance of LFP. These results demonstrate that the solid-state reaction occurs quickly, even at a low sintering temperature of 500 °C, and completes at 700 °C. However, contrary to the expectations, the larger LFP particles disappeared and fused into the nano-MF73 particles, revealing that Fe ions diffuse more easily than Mn ions in the olivine framework. This discovery provides valuable insights into understanding ion diffusion in LMFP. Notably, the obtained LMFP can still deliver an initial capacity of 142.3 mAh g-1, and the phase separation during the electrochemical process is significantly suppressed, resulting in good cycling stability (91.1% capacity retention after 300 cycles). These findings offer a promising approach for synthesizing LMFP with improved performance and stability.
RESUMEN
The sialic acid binding Ig like lectin 15 (Siglec-15) was previously identified as tumor immune suppressor gene in some human cancers with elusive molecular mechanism to be elucidated. The continuous focus on both clinical and basic biology of bladder cancer leads us to characterize aberrant abundance of BACH1-IT2 associating with stabilization of Siglec-15, which eventually contributes to local immune suppressive microenvironment and therefore tumor advance. This effect was evidently mediated by miR-4786-5p. BACH1-IT2 functions in this scenario as microRNA sponge, and competitively conceals miR-4786 and up-regulates cancer cell surface Siglec-15. The BACH1-IT2-miR-4786-Siglec-15 axis significantly influences activation of immune cell co-culture. In summary, our data highlights the critical involvements of BACH1-IT2 and miR-4786 in immune evasion in bladder cancer, which hints the potential for both therapeutic and prognostic exploitation.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease is a significant driver of the increasing global burden of chronic liver disease. This study aimed to describe the temporal trends and inequalities of liver complications related to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (LC-MASLD) by geographical region, age and sex during 1990-2021. METHODS: Global Burden of Diseases Study 2021 data were analysed to assess LC-MASLD incidence, prevalence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Temporal trends during 1990-2021 were measured by 'estimated annual percentage change' (EAPC). Inequalities of LC-MASLD burden across countries were evaluated by the slope index of inequality (SII) and the relative concentration index (RCI). RESULTS: During 1990-2021, LC-MASLD rose annually by 0.73% in incidence and prevalence, 0.19% in mortality and 0.16% in DALYs. In 2021, the Middle East and North Africa had the highest incidence and prevalence and Andean and Central Latin America had the highest mortality and DALY rates. While LC-MASLD incidence was earliest in the 15-19 age group, both prevalence and DALY rates peaked at 75-79 years for both sexes. Inequalities in mortality and DALYs by countries' socioeconomic development index increased during 1990-2021, demonstrated by a decline in SII from -0.09 to -0.56 per 100 000 for mortality and from 1.41 to -7.74 per 100 000 for DALYs. RCI demonstrated similar findings. CONCLUSION: The LC-MASLD burden is increasing globally, especially in economically disadvantaged countries, with widening disease inequalities during 1990-2021. Effective prevention and subregional interventions are crucial, with a specific focus on resource optimisation for disadvantaged populations.

The phase distribution and organic spacer cations play pivotal roles in determining the emission performance and stability of perovskite quantum wells (QWs). Here, we propose a universal molecular regulation strategy to tailor phase distribution and enhance the stability of CsPbBr3 QWs. The capability of sterically hindered ligands with formidable surface binding groups is underscored in directing CsPbBr3 growth and refining phase distribution. With trimethylamine modified boron dipyrromethene (BDP-TMA) ligand as a representative, the BDP-TMA driven can precisely control phase distribution and passivate defects of CsPbBr3 . Notably, BDP-TMA acts as a co-spacer organic entity in obtained BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 , facilitating efficient singlet energy transfer and tailoring the luminescence to produce a distinctive bluish-white emission. The BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 demonstrates significant phase stability under water exposure, light irradiation, and moderate temperature. Interestingly, BDP-TMA-CsPbBr3 exhibits the thermally-induced dynamic fluorescence control at elevated temperatures, which can be achieved feasible for advanced information encryption. This discovery paves the way for the exploration of perovskite QWs in applications like temperature sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and other advanced optical smart technologies.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to evaluate the impact of race/ethnicity on cirrhosis-related premature death during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We obtained cirrhosis-related death data (n = 872,965, January 1, 2012-December 31, 2021) from the US National Vital Statistic System to calculate age-standardized mortality rates and years of potential life lost (YPLL) for premature death aged 25-64 years. RESULTS: Significant racial/ethnic disparity in cirrhosis-related age-standardized mortality rates was noted prepandemic but widened during the pandemic, with the highest excess YPLL for the non-Hispanic American Indian/American Native (2020: 41.0%; 2021: 68.8%) followed by other minority groups (28.7%-45.1%), and the non-Hispanic White the lowest (2020: 20.7%; 2021: 31.6%). COVID-19 constituted >30% of the excess YPLLs for Hispanic and non-Hispanic American Indian/American Native in 2020, compared with 11.1% for non-Hispanic White. DISCUSSION: Ethnic minorities with cirrhosis experienced a disproportionate excess death and YPLLs in 2020-2021.

BACKGROUND: US progress toward ending the HIV epidemic was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of the pandemic on HIV-related mortality and potential disparities. METHODS: Using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States (US) Census Bureau, HIV-related mortality data of decedents aged ≥25 years between 2012 and 2021 were analyzed. Excess HIV-related mortality rates were estimated by determining the difference between observed and projected mortality rates during the pandemic. The trends of mortality were quantified with joinpoint regression analysis. RESULTS: Of the 79,725 deaths documented in adults aged 25 years and older between 2012 and 2021, a significant downward trend was noted in HIV-related mortality rates before the pandemic, followed by a surge during the pandemic. The observed mortality rates were 18.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 13.1%-25.5%) and 25.4% (95%CI: 19.9%-30.4%) higher than the projected values in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Both of these percentages were higher than that in the general population in 2020 (16.4%, 95%CI: 14.9%-17.9%) and 2021 (19.8%, 95%CI: 18.0%-21.6%), respectively. Increased HIV-related mortality was observed across all age subgroups, but those aged 25-44 years demonstrated the greatest relative increase and the lowest COVID-19-related deaths when compared to middle- and old-aged decedents. Disparities were observed across racial/ethnic subgroups and geographic regions. CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic led to a reversal in the attainments made to reduce the prevalence of HIV. Individuals living with HIV were disproportionately affected during the pandemic. Thoughtful policies are needed to address the disparity in excess HIV-related mortality.

Four strains (NYNU 178247, NYNU 178251, DMKU-PAL160 and DMKU-PAL137) representing a novel yeast species were isolated from the external surfaces of rice and pineapple leaves collected in China and Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene revealed that the novel species belonged to the genus Spencerozyma. The D1/D2 sequence of the novel species differed from its closest relative, Spencerozyma acididurans SYSU-17T, by 3.2â% sequence divergence. The species also differed from Spencerozyma crocea CBS 2029T and Spencerozyma siamensis DMKU13-2T, by 3.0-6.9â% sequence divergence in the D1/D2 sequences out of 592 bp. In the ITS regions, the novel species displayed 19.8-29.2% sequence divergence from S. acididurans SYSU-17T, S. crocea CBS 2029T and S. siamensis DMKU13-2T out of 655 bp. Furthermore, the novel species could also be differentiated from the closely related species by some physiological characteristics. The species name of Spencerozyma pingqiaoensis sp. nov. (Holotype CBS 15238, Mycobank MB 844734) is proposed to accommodate these four strains.

BACKGROUND: Research on the immune response to inactivated COVID-19 vaccination among people living with HIV (PLWH) is limited, especially among those with low CD4+ T lymphocyte (CD4 cell) count. This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the humoral immune response to inactivated COVID-19 vaccination among PLWH compared to HIV negative controls (HNCs) and to determine the impact of CD4 cell count on vaccine response among PLWH. METHODS: The neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) and the specific IgM and IgG-binding antibody responses to the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine at the third month after the second dose of inactivated COVID-19 vaccination were measured among 138 PLWH and 35 HNCs. Multivariable logistic regression and multiple linear regression models were conducted to identify factors associated with the seroconversion rate of antibodies and the magnitude of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody titers, respectively. RESULTS: At the end of the third month after two doses of vaccination, the seroconversion rates of IgG were comparable between PLWH (44.9%; 95% CI 36.5-53.3%) and HNCs (60.0%; 95% CI 42.9-77.1%), respectively. The median titers and seroconversion rate of nAbs among PLWH were 0.57 (IQR: 0.30-1.11) log10 BAU/mL and 29.0% (95% CI 21.3-36.8%), respectively, both lower than those in HNCs (P < 0.05). After adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities, and CD4 cell count, the titers and seroconversion rate of nAbs were comparable between PLWH and HNCs (P > 0.05). Multivariable regression analyses showed that CD4 cell count < 200/µL was independently associated with lower titers and seroconversion rate of nAbs among PLWH (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between the CD4 cell count and nAbs titers in PLWH (Spearman's ρ = 0.25, P = 0.0034). CONCLUSION: Our study concluded that the immune response to inactivated COVID-19 vaccination among PLWH was independently associated with CD4 cell count, PLWH with lower CD4 cell count showed a weaker humoral immune response, especially those with CD4 cell count < 200/µL. This finding suggests that expanding COVID-19 vaccination coverage among PLWH is impendency. In addition, aggressive ART should be carried out for PLWH, especially for those with low CD4 cell count, to improve the immune response to vaccines.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the main cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with a low five-year survival rate, posing a serious threat to human health. In recent years, the delivery of antitumor drugs using a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) has become a subject of research. This study aimed to develop an apigenin (AP)-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier (AP-NLC) by melt sonication using glyceryl monostearate (GMS), glyceryl triacetate, and poloxamer 188. The optimal prescription of AP-NLC was screened by central composite design response surface methodology (CCD-RSM) based on a single-factor experiment using encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and drug loading (DL%) as response values and then evaluated for its antitumor effects on NCI-H1299 cells. A series of characterization analyses of AP-NLC prepared according to the optimal prescription were carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Subsequent screening of the lyophilization protectants revealed that mannitol could better maintain the lyophilization effect. The in vitro hemolysis assay of this formulation indicated that it may be safe for intravenous injection. Moreover, AP-NLC presented a greater ability to inhibit the proliferation, migration, and invasion of NCI-H1299 cells compared to AP. Our results suggest that AP-NLC is a safe and effective nano-delivery vehicle that may have beneficial potential in the treatment of NSCLC.

Hypertension is a common disease that affects human health and can lead to damage to the heart, kidneys, and other important organs. In this study, we investigated the regulatory effects of bioactive peptides derived from Ruditapes philippinarum (RPP) on hypertension and organ protection in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive rats. We found that RPPs exhibited significant blood pressure-lowering properties. Furthermore, the results showed that RPPs positively influenced vascular remodeling and effectively maintained a balanced water-sodium equilibrium. Meanwhile, RPPs demonstrated anti-inflammatory potential by reducing the serum levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-2, and IL-6). Moreover, we observed the strong antioxidant activity of RPPs, which played a critical role in reducing oxidative stress and alleviating hypertension-induced damage to the aorta, heart, and kidneys. Additionally, our study explored the regulatory effects of RPPs on the gut microbiota, suggesting a possible correlation between their antihypertensive effects and the modulation of gut microbiota. Our previous studies have demonstrated that RPPs can significantly reduce blood pressure in SHR rats. This suggests that RPPs can significantly improve both essential hypertension and DOAC-salt-induced secondary hypertension and can ameliorate cardiorenal damage caused by hypertension. These findings further support the possibility of RPPs as an active ingredient in functional anti-hypertensive foods.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The study aims to quantify the global trend of the disease burden of type 2 diabetes caused by various risks factors by country income tiers. METHODS: Data on type 2 diabetes, including mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) during 1990-2019, were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We analysed mortality and DALY rates and the population attributable fraction (PAF) in various risk factors of type 2 diabetes by country income tiers. RESULTS: Globally, the age-standardised death rate (ASDR) attributable to type 2 diabetes increased from 16.7 (15.7, 17.5)/100,000 person-years in 1990 to 18.5 (17.2, 19.7)/100,000 person-years in 2019. Similarly, age-standardised DALY rates increased from 628.3 (537.2, 730.9)/100,000 person-years to 801.5 (670.6, 954.4)/100,000 person-years during 1990-2019. Lower-middle-income countries reported the largest increase in the average annual growth of ASDR (1.3%) and an age-standardised DALY rate (1.6%) of type 2 diabetes. The key PAF attributing to type 2 diabetes deaths/DALYs was high BMI in countries of all income tiers. With the exception of BMI, while in low- and lower-middle-income countries, risk factors attributable to type 2 diabetes-related deaths and DALYs are mostly environment-related, the risk factors in high-income countries are mostly lifestyle-related. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Type 2 diabetes disease burden increased globally, but low- and middle-income countries showed the highest growth rate. A high BMI level remained the key contributing factor in all income tiers, but environmental and lifestyle-related factors contributed differently across income tiers. Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) is an opportunistic infection treated with anti-fungal agents. Herein, we evaluate the efficacy and safety of miconazole buccal tablets (MBT) and itraconazole capsules in the localized treatment of patients with OPC. In this multi-centered, double-blinded, phase III trial (CTR20130414), both males and non-pregnant females (≥18 years) with OPC were randomized (1:1) to MBT plus placebo (experimental group) or itraconazole capsules plus placebo (control group). The primary endpoint was clinical cure at the end-of-treatment period [visit 4 (V4)] while secondary endpoints were clinical remission rates, partial remission rates, mycological cure, clinical relapse, and adverse events (AEs). All endpoints were statistically analyzed in both the full analysis set (FAS) and per-protocol (PP) set. A total of 431 (experimental: 216; control: 215) subjects were included. At V4, in the FAS set, the clinical cure was achieved in 68% and 59% patients in experimental and control groups, respectively with a treatment difference of 9% [95% confidence interval (CI): -1,19; P < .001] demonstrating non-inferiority of MBT over itraconazole. At V4, mycological cure rates were 68.2% and 42.0% in the experimental group and control groups (P < .001), respectively in FAS. The relapse rates were 5.4% and 6.6%, respectively, in the experimental and control groups. A total of 210 patients experienced AEs during treatment with 47.7% in the experimental group and 49.8% in the control group with no deaths. This study demonstrated that once-daily treatment with MBT was non-inferior to itraconazole with higher mycological cure rates and was tolerable with mild AE in patients with OPC.
Miconazole is an antifungal drug against certain types of fungus or yeast infections. In this study, we showed that treatment with once-daily miconazole buccal tablets was as effective as systemic itraconazole capsules in Chinese patients infected by oropharyngeal candidiasis with minimum side effects.

Zero-dimensional Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals (NCs) possess attractive photoluminescence (PL) properties and feature facile chemical synthesis, making them promising for application in luminescent materials. However, Cs4PbBr6 remains sensitive to polar solvents and thermal stimuli because of soft ionic nature of Cs4PbBr6 and dynamic behavior of surface ligands. Herein, a strategy controlled by an in situ surface coordination reaction is developed to fabricate stable NCs with a Cs4PbBr6-Zn(moi)2 core-shell structure. It was found that the Cs4PbBr6 surface regulated by the use of 2-mercaptoimidazole (called moi) and the coordination between the -NH group of moi and Zn2+ is critical for the formation of Cs4PbBr6-Zn(moi)2 core-shell NCs. Meanwhile, the thickness of the Zn(moi)2 shell can be facilely controlled by the growth time because of the solubility of moi and Zn(OAc)2·2H2O in ethyl acetate. Compared to bare Cs4PbBr6, Cs4PbBr6-Zn(moi)2 NCs exhibited highly improved polar solvent resistance and thermal stability. By combining the sensitivity of Cs4PbBr6 and the stability of Cs4PbBr6-Zn(moi)2, we used two NCs as PL security inks to fabricate optical anticounterfeiting labels. Thus, the disposable or reusable optical anticounterfeiting label is achieved by changing the external dual-stimuli. This work provides a novel strategy to enhance the stability of Cs4PbBr6 and develop its potential interest for application in anticounterfeiting technologies.

Nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain (NOD) receptor is a member of inherent immunity recognition receptor family. We investigated the NOD1/Rip2 signalling pathway on carotid arterial remodelling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). SHRs were treated with NOD1 agonist (iE-DAP), inhibitor (ML130), or normal saline. We determined the NOD1 and Rip2 expression in carotid artery tissues, serum tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1). The carotid artery remodelling in 16-week SHRs was higher than that of 8-week SHRs and 16-week Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Expression of NOD1, Rip2, MCP-1 and TNF-α in 16-week SHRs was higher than that of 8-week SHRs and 16-week WKY rats. Blood pressure in iE-DAP-treated SHRs was higher than SHR-C group (no treatment), together with MCP-1, TNF-α, NOD1 and Rip2 expression, as well as carotid artery remodelling. In ML130-treated group, these aspects were completely the opposite. Taken together, inhibition of NOD1/Rip2 signalling pathway could delay the vascular remodelling process.

Lung cancer seriously threatens the health of human beings, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for 80%. Nowadays, the potential position of nano-delivery in treating cancer has been the subject of continuous research. The present research aimed to prepare two molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified kaempferol (KA)-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (HA-KA-NLCs) by the method of melting ultrasonic and electrostatic adsorption, and to assess the antitumor effect of the preparations on A549 cells. The characterization and safety evaluation of the preparations illustrated that they are acceptable for drug delivery for cancer. Subsequently, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicated that the drug was adequately incorporated in the carrier, and the particle appeared as a sphere. Moreover, HA-KA-NLC showed predominant in vitro antitumor effects, inhibiting proliferation, migration, and invasion, promoting apoptosis and increasing cellular uptake of A549 cells. Otherwise, the Western blot assay revealed that preparations could activate epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related signaling pathways and modulate the expression of E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and Vimentin in A549 cells. Our present findings demonstrated that HA-KA-NLC could be considered as a secure and effective carrier for targeted tumor delivery and may have potential application prospects in future clinic therapy of NSCLC.

Objective To observe the effect of cryptotanshinone on the ferroptosis of human liver cancer HepG2 cells. Methods The viability of the HepG2 cells cultured in vitro was determined using the Cell Counting Kit-8(CCK-8),and the half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC50)was calculated. The cell morphology was observed using an inverted microscope. The reactive oxygen species(ROS)level was detected with the 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate(DCFH-DA)probe.The glutathione(GSH)assay kit was used to determine the GSH level.Western blot analysis was employed to detect the expression of cystine/glutamate antiporter system light chain(xCT)and glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4),two marker proteins in ferroptosis.Additionally, the cell viability,ROS level,GSH level, and the expression levels of xCT and GPX4 were detected for the cells treated with the ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostain-1(Fer-1),the iron chelator deferoxamine(DFO),and the ROS scavenger N-acetylcysteine(NAC).Results Cryptotanshinone significantly inhibited the cell viability of HepG2 cells with an IC50 of 93.73 µmol/L,and caused the morphological changes and death of the cells. It could significantly induce ROS accumulation, reduce GSH level, and down-regulate the expression of xCT and GPX4 in HepG2 cells.Fer-1,DFO,and NAC can remedy the cryptotanshinone-caused decrease in the cell viability of HepG2 cells.Fer-1 could inhibit cryptotanshinone-induced ROS accumulation, restore GSH level, and recover the expression of xCT and GPX4. Conclusion Cryptotanshinone may increase the accumulation of ROS by inhibiting the expression of xCT and GPX4 to induce the ferroptosis of HepG2 cells.

BACKGROUND Chronic hypertension changes the function and structure of the heart and blood vessels. This study aimed to explore the role of the NOD1/Rip2 (nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 1/receptor-interacting protein 2) signaling pathway in myocardial remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Blood pressure was measured using a tail cuff. The cardiac structure was observed using echocardiography. Slices of the myocardium were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The expression of NOD1 and Rip2 was detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blot, and immunohistochemistry. The content and distribution of collagen in the myocardium were observed using Van Gieson staining. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the interleukin-1 (IL-1) concentrations. SHRs were treated with the NOD1 agonist iE-DAP and NOD1 inhibitor ML130. RESULTS The NOD1 agonist increased blood pressure in SHRs, and the NOD1 inhibitor decreased blood pressure; the interventricular septum thickness (IVST) and left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT) of the agonist-treated group were thicker than those of the control group, and the antagonist exerted the opposite effects. The levels of the NOD1 and Rip2 mRNAs and proteins, serum IL-1 concentration, and myocardial collagen volume fraction (CVF%) increased in SHRs in the NOD1 agonist group, but the levels of NOD1 and Rip2, serum IL-1 concentration, and myocardial collagen volume fraction (CVF%) decreased in SHRs in the NOD1 inhibitor group. CONCLUSIONS NOD1/Rip2 expression increased during the progression of myocardial remodeling in SHRs. The NOD1 agonist increased NOD1 expression and promoted myocardial remodeling, while the NOD1 antagonist reduced NOD1/Rip2 expression and protected against myocardial remodeling.

BACKGROUD: Diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease and a severe public health issue. The incidence trends for type 1 diabetes (TIDM) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have rarely been studied on a global scale. We aimed to determine the temporal and geographical trends of diabetes globally. METHODS: Data on diabetes mellitus, including incidence, prevalence from 1990 to 2017 were obtained from the 2017 Global Burden of Disease study. We calculated the estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of diabetes mellitus according to sex, region, and disease type. RESULTS: The worldwide incident cases of diabetes mellitus has increased by 102.9% from 11,303,084 cases in 1990 to 22,935,630 cases in 2017 worldwide, while the ASIR increased from 234 /100,000 persons (95% UI, 219-249) to 285/100,000 persons (95% UI, 262-310) in this period [EAPC = 0.87, 95% confidence interval (CI):0.79-0.96]. The global ASIRs of T1DM and T2DM both demonstrated significant increase during 1990-2017, with EAPCs of 0.34 (95% CI,0.30-0.39) and 0.89 (95% CI,0.80-0.97), respectively. The ASIR trends also varied considerably by regions and countries. The increase in ASIR was greatest in high sociodemographic index regions (EAPC = 1.05, 95% CI:0.92-1.17) and lowest in low-SDI regions (EAPC = 0.79, 95% CI:0.71-0.88). CONCLUSIONS: Both the number of incident cases and ASIR of diabetes mellitus increased significantly during 1990-2017 worldwide, but the temporal trends varied markedly across regions and countries.
