RESUMEN

In aquatic systems, sediment is both a sink for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and a potential source of POPs release. Consequently, it is important to understand the pollution characteristics and sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) as POPs of Stockholm Convention in sediment for control of the ecological risk. Atmospheric deposition is a potential source of PCNs in sediment. However, there is no clear report on the contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in sediments. In this study, the Chaobai River in China was selected because it is an important drinking water source that is not affected by wastewater discharge. Surface sediments from the river were analyzed for 75 PCN congeners by using high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry. The total PCNs concentration ranged from 54 to 2266 (mean: 402) pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantity of 19 PCNs in surface sediments was 9.69 × 10-2, and CN73, CN66/CN67, and CN63 had the largest contributions to this value. Dichlorinated and trichlorinated naphthalenes were the dominant homologs. The PCN data from the sediment samples in this study were combined with data for PCNs in ambient air from a literature, which has a good match with this study in both temporal and spatial scales. The contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in the surface sediment was evaluated by comparing congener characteristics and correlation analysis. Our study indicated atmospheric transportation and deposition are important pathways for transport of PCNs into surface sediments.

RESUMEN

The coexistence of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in drinking water has generated much concern recently. However, a method to simultaneously determine these compounds has not been developed. In this study, a method using solid-phase extraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for determination of PPAHs and HPAHs in drinking water was established. Forty-two target compounds including 16 PPAHs and 26 HPAHs (16 chlorinated PAHs (Cl-HPAHs) and 10 brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs)) were selected to evaluate the performance. Our results indicate enriching compounds with a LC18 cartridge and eluting with dichloromethane is optimal with recovery of 74.88-119.4%. Method detection limits ranged from 0.34 to 3.37 ng L-1 when only using 1 L samples. The method accomplished the analysis of trace PPAHs and HPAHs. We found the coexistence of PPAHs and HPAHs including 12 PPAHs, 2 Cl-PAHs and 3 Br-PAHs in tap water samples. Maximum total concentration of PPAHs and HPAHs reached 33.69 ng L-1 and 3.04 ng L-1, respectively. Trace Br-PAHs were first detected in drinking water. 6-bromobenzene[a]pyrene was dominated among the HPAHs with a concentration from 2.30 to 2.69 ng L-1. The simultaneous occurrence of PPAHs and HPAHs in drinking water should receive more attention, and their formation mechanism should be further explored.

RESUMEN

Halocyclopentadienes (HCPDs) are an emerging class of alicyclic disinfection by-products (DBPs) with high toxicity in disinfected drinking water. However, their potential precursors remain unclear, which hinders the understanding of their formation and further development of control strategies. In this study, two HCPDs, 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-1,3-cyclopentadiene (TCC) and 1,2,3,4,5,5-hexachloro-1,3-cyclopentadiene (HCC), were identified in chlorinated lignin and tannic acid samples for the first time. The chlorination of four lignin-like and two tannic-like phenolic model compounds confirmed that guaiacol and digallic acid can produce HCPDs. According to their structures, ortho-substituents of phenolic compounds were speculated to be crucial for HCPDs formation. The simulated disinfection of catechol, 2-ethoxyphenol (2-EOP), 2-propoxyphenol (2-POP) and 3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxybenzoic acid (DH-5-MBA) with different ortho-substituents demonstrated that three of these compounds can generate HCPDs, except catechol, which further indicates that ortho-substituents, such as the methoxy, ethoxy and propoxy groups, contribute to HCPDs generation. Guaiacol was the simplest compound for generating HCPDs, and possible formation pathways during chlorination were proposed. Seven hydroxy-chlorocyclopentadienes were tentatively identified and are likely important intermediates of HCPDs formation. Additionally, TCC and HCC were confirmed in tap water and chlorinated SRNOM samples with total concentrations up to 11.07 ng/L and 65.66 ng/L, respectively, further demonstrating the wide existence of HCPDs and their precursors. This study reports the clear precursors of HCPDs and provides a theoretical foundation for controlling HCPDs formation in disinfected drinking water.

RESUMEN

To investigate the effect of pesticide use on surface water, the concentration and distribution characteristics of 57 pesticides and 3 degradation products were analyzed in the farmland soil and surface water in the Xingkai Lake area, including water from paddy fields, drainages and the Xingkai Lake, in Heilongjiang Province, China. Forty-three pesticides and three degradation products were detected in farmland soil. In dry field (corn and soybean field) soil, the main detected pesticides were atrazine and acetochlor with mean concentrations of 26.09 ng·g-1 and 49.08 ng·g-1, respectively. In paddy field soil, oxadiazon, mefenacet and chlorpyrifos were the main detected pesticides with mean concentrations of 14.32 ng·g-1, 78.60 ng·g-1 and 20.03 ng·g-1, respectively. In the surrounding water, including water from paddy fields, drainages and Xingkai Lake, the total concentrations of contaminants detected in the water samples ranged from 71.19 ng·L-1 to 10,145.76 ng·L-1. Of the three sampling periods, the mean concentration of contaminants in the water exhibited its peak during the vegetative period. In the analysis of the drainage water, the primary pesticides detected were atrazine, acetochlor and buprofezin with mean concentrations of 354.83 ng·L-1, 109.09 ng·L-1 and 254.56 ng·L-1, respectively. Atrazine, simetryn, buprofezin and isoprothiolane were the main pesticides detected in Xingkai Lake water, with the mean concentrations of 222.35 ng·L-1, 112.76 ng·L-1, 301.87 ng·L-1 and 138.02 ng·L-1, respectively. The concentrations of contaminants could be correlated with drainage, Da Xingkai Lake and Xiao Xingkai Lake water (ρ > 0.8) suggested that the source of these contaminants in drainage and Xingkai Lake water could be the same. The maximum potentially affected fraction (PAF) values of atrazine, chlorpyrifos and prometryn were higher than 5% in Xingkai Lake water, resulting in high ecological risks.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Smoking history is a heterogeneous situation for different populations, and numerous studies suggest that smoking cessation is conducive to reduce the mortality of lung cancer. However, no quantitative meta-analysis regarding smoking cessation duration based on different populations has demonstrated it clearly. METHODS: We systematically searched four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Scoups) till February 2023. Eligible studies reported the association between lung cancer survival and duration of smoking cessation. Additionally, we stratified the study population according to whether they had lung cancer at the time they quit smoking. Studies were pooled with the random-effects model. RESULTS: Out of the 11,361 potential studies initially identified, we included 24 studies involving 969,560 individuals in our analysis. Lung cancer mortality varied across two groups: general quitters and peri-diagnosis quitters. For general quitters, those who had quit smoking for less than 10 years exhibited an RR of 0.64 (95% CI [0.55-0.76]), while those who quit for 10-20 years had an RR of 0.33 (0.25-0.43), over 20 years had an RR of 0.16 (0.11-0.24), and never-smokers had an RR at 0.11 (0.07-0.15). Among peri-diagnosis quitters, the 1-year Overall Survival (OS) showed an RR of 0.80 (0.67-0.96), the 2-year OS had an RR of 0.89 (0.80-0.98), the 3-year OS had an RR of 0.93 (0.84-1.03), and the 5-year OS had an RR of 0.85 (0.76-0.96). CONCLUSIONS: Earlier and longer smoking cessation is associated with reduced lung cancer mortality, no matter in which cessation stage for two different populations.

RESUMEN

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world with more than 6300 km, covering 0.4 billion people. However, the aquatic ecosystem of the Yangtze River has been seriously damaged in the past decades due to a rapid development of economic and industrialization along the coast. In this study, we first established a dataset of fifty elements, including nine common heavy metals (HMs) and forty-one other elements, in the Yangtze River Basin through the collection of historical data from 2000 to 2020, and then analyzed their spatiotemporal distribution characteristics. The results indicated that the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), a region formed by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), may act as a sink for these elements from upstream regions. The concentrations of seven elements in surface water and 13 elements in sediment obviously increased from the upstream region of the TGR to the TGR. In addition, ten elements in the surface water and 5 elements in the sediments clearly decreased, possibly because of the interception effects of the TGD. On a timescale, Cr obviously tended to migrate from the water phase to the sediment; Pb tended to migrate from the sediment to the water phase. In the ecological risk assessment, all common HMs in surface water were supposed to have negligible risks as protecting 90 % of aquatic organisms; Cd (210.2), Hg (58.0) and As (43.1) in sediment posed high and moderate ecological risks using the methodology of the potential ecological risk index. Furthermore, Hunan Province is at considerable risk according to the sum of the potential risk index (314.8) due to Cd pollution (66.8 %). These fundamental data and results will support follow-up control strategies for elements and policies related to aquatic ecosystem protection in the Yangtze River Basin.

RESUMEN

Xingkai Lake, located in Heilongjiang Province, is an important fishery and agricultural base and is seriously polluted by agricultural non-point sources. To clarify the residual status of many pesticides in the surface water of Xingkai Lake, 27 types of pesticides, herbicides, and their degradation products were analyzed in rice paddy, drainage, and surface water around Xingkai Lake (China) during the rice heading and maturity periods. The results showed that all 27 types of pesticides, herbicides, and their degradation products were detected during the rice heading period, and the total concentration ranged from 247.97 to 6 094.49 ng·L-1. Additionally, 25 species were detected during the rice maturity period, and the total concentration ranged from 485.36 to 796.23 ng·L-1. In comparison, more pesticides, herbicides, and derived degradation products were detected during the heading period, and their total concentration was higher as well. During the rice heading period, atrazine, simetryn, and paclobutrazol were the main detected pesticides, atrazine and isoprothiolane were the main pesticides detected during the maturity period. The distribution characteristics of pesticides and herbicides in the surface water around Xingkai Lake (China) was similar to that in drainage, so they were probably imported from the drainage and rice paddy. The average risk quotient (RQ) values of atrazine, simetryn, prometryn, butachlor, isoprothiolane, and oxadiazon were higher than 0.1 in drainage and Xingkai Lake (China), which showed a potential risk to aquatic organisms.

RESUMEN

Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) had been associated with asthma in observational studies, but the effect of OSA on the onset of asthma in childhood or adulthood remains unclear, and the causal inferences have not been confirmed. This study aims to investigate the potential causal association between OSA with asthma, including different age-of-onset subtypes, providing reliable basis for the clinical treatment of OSA and asthma. Patients and Methods: Causality between OSA and asthma was assessed using a two-sample bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. OSA data were obtained from the FinnGen consortium R9, while asthma and its subtypes (adult-onset asthma, child-onset asthma, and moderate-to-severe asthma) were sourced from the IEU OpenGWAS project. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was chosen as the primary analysis and was complemented by various sensitivity analyses. The MR-PRESSO outlier test was employed to systematically identify and remove outlier variants, mitigating heterogeneity and potential effects of horizontal pleiotropy. Results: The MR analyses provided evidence of genetically predicted OSA having a promoting effect on child-onset asthma (OR,1.49; 95% CI, 1.05-2.11; P=0.025) and moderate-to-severe asthma (OR,1.03; 95% CI, 1.00-1.06; P=0.046). However, no causal association between OSA with asthma and adult-onset asthma was observed. Conclusion: Our study revealed a causal association between OSA and child asthma, but not in adults. Moderate-to-severe asthma may have a potential promoting effect on OSA. These findings underscore the importance of age-specific considerations in managing asthma and suggests the need for personalized approaches in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors play an important role in the development and management of childhood obesity and its related cardiometabolic complications. OBJECTIVE/METHODS: We aimed to explore childhood obesity subtypes based on lifestyle factors and examine their association with cardiometabolic health. We included 1550 children with obesity from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Cluster analysis identified obesity subtypes based on four lifestyle factors (physical activity, diet quality, sedentary time and smoking). Multiple linear regression assessed their association with cardiometabolic factors. RESULTS: Five subtypes of childhood obesity were identified: unhealthy subtype (n = 571; 36.8%), physically active subtype (n = 185; 21.1%), healthy diet subtype (n = 404; 26.1%), smoking subtype (n = 125; 8.1%) and non-sedentary subtype (n = 265; 17.1%). Compared with the unhealthy subtype, the physically active subtype had lower insulin and HOMA-IR levels, and smoking subtype was associated with lower HDL levels. When compared with children with normal weight, all obesity subtypes had worse cardiometabolic profile, except the physically active subtype who had similar DBP, HbA1c and TC levels; smoking subtype who had similar TC levels; and healthy diet and non-sedentary subtypes who had similar DBP levels. CONCLUSION: Children of different lifestyle-based obesity subtypes might have different cardiometabolic risks. Our new classification system might help personalize assessment of childhood obesity.

RESUMEN

Sedimentary dissolved organic matter (DOM) could exert a significant influence on the transformation of trace organic contaminants. However, the variations of sedimentary DOM properties with depth and their impact on trace organic contaminants biodegradation remain unclear. In this study, the qualitative changes in DOM properties with depth were assessed using spectral techniques. Specifically, within the sediment range of 0-30 cm, humic acid and fulvic acid fractions exhibited higher degrees of humification and aromatization at 10-20 cm, while hydrophilic fractions showed higher degrees of humification and aromatization at 20-30 cm. Furthermore, electrochemical methods were employed to quantitatively assess the electron transfer capacity of sedimentary DOM at different depths, which displayed consistent variation trend with humification and aromatization degree. The high degree of humification and aromatization, along with strong electron-accepting capability of DOM, significantly enhanced the biodegradation rates of tetracycline and ritonavir. To gain deeper insights into the influence of molecular composition of DOM on its properties, two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry analysis revealed that quinones and phenolic hydroxyl compounds govern the redox reactivity of DOM. Simulated experiment of DOM-mediated biodegradation of typical pharmaceuticals confirmed the role of quinones and phenolic hydroxyl groups in the redox reactivity of DOM.

RESUMEN

Organic contaminants, especially hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), pose potential ecological threats even at environmental concentrations. Characterization of HOC profiles and identification of key environmental stressors are vital but still challenging in groundwater quality management. In this study, a strategy for identifying the key environmental stressors among HOCs in groundwater based on integrated chemical monitoring technologies and microbial ecology analysis methods was proposed and applied to typical groundwater samples. Specifically, the characteristics of HOCs were systematically analyzed based on nontargeted and targeted approaches, and microbial community assembly and specific biomarker analysis were combined to determine the major ecological processes and key environmental stressors. The results showed that a total of 234 HOCs were detected in groundwater collected from Tongzhou, Beijing; among them, phthalate esters (PAEs) were screened out as key environmental stressors, considering that they made relatively higher microbial ecology contributions. Furthermore, their influences on the structure and function of the groundwater microbial community were evaluated by adopting high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis technologies. These findings confirmed PAEs as vital determinants driving microbial assembly, shifting community structure, and regulating community function in groundwater; in addition, the findings validated the feasibility and suitability of the proposed strategy.

RESUMEN

N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) possesses the ability to promote mental health and enhance immunity and is widely used in both medicine and food fields as a supplement. Enzymatic production of Neu5Ac using N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) as substrate was significant. However, the high-cost GlcNAc limited its development. In this study, an in vitro multi-enzyme catalysis was built to produce Neu5Ac using affordable chitin as substrate. Firstly, exochitinase SmChiA from Serratia proteamaculans and N-acetylglucosaminosidase CmNAGase from Chitinolyticbacter meiyuanensis SYBC-H1 were screened and combined to produce GlcNAc, effectively. Then, the chitinase was cascaded with N-acetylglucosamine-2-epimerase (AGE) and N-neuraminic acid aldolase (NanA) to produce Neu5Ac; the optimal conditions of the multi-enzyme catalysis system were 37°C and pH 8.5, the ratio of AGE to NanA (1:4) and addition of pyruvate (70 mM), respectively. Finally, 9.2 g/L Neu5Ac could be obtained from 20 g/L chitin within 24 h along with two supplementations with pyruvate. This work will lay a good foundation for the production of Neu5Ac from cheap chitin resources.

RESUMEN

During the laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure, closing mesentery or not was still controversial according to preexisted studies. So, the current meta-analysis aimed to compare the outcome of closure versus non-closure of mesenteric defects in laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Fifteen studies were included, enrolling 53,488 patients. Based on the outcome of analysis, regarding internal hernia, Petersen space's IH, jejunal mesenteric's IH, hospital days, and reoperation, closure of the mesentery was better than non-closure. Besides, small bowel obstruction, anastomosis ulcer, stenosis, leakage, bleeding, gastrointestinal perforation, and postoperative BMI of patients show no difference between non-closure and closure.

RESUMEN

Surface sediments are both sinks and sources of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Cl/Br-PAHs) in the environment. It is important to study the source of Cl/Br-PAHs in the surface sediment for controlling the ecological risk of Cl/Br-PAHs. Clues from the previous research suggested that atmospheric deposition may be one of the main sources of Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment. However, due to the lack of matched sediment and atmospheric Cl/Br-PAHs data, the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment has not been confirmed. This study investigated the characteristics of 37 Cl/Br-PAHs and validated the contribution of atmospheric sedimentation to Cl/Br-PAHs in sediment by a case study in the surface sediments of the Chaobai River, China. To the best of our knowledge, four Cl-PAHs and eleven Br-PAHs were found in the sediments for the first time. The total concentrations of 18 Cl-PAH species were 76-2301 pg/g, while those of Br-PAHs were 6-238 pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantities (TEQ) of the Cl-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 0.73 pg TEQ/g and 2.21 pg TEQ/g, respectively. The TEQ of the Br-PAHs in surface sediments in the water conservation area and in the urban comparison area were 2.85 × 10-2 pg TEQ/g and 6.6 × 10-2 pg TEQ/g, respectively. Based on the characteristics comparison and correlation analysis of Cl/Br-PAHs in both sediment and ambient air, it was initially confirmed the contribution of atmospheric deposition to Cl-PAHs in sediments. However, there was no conclusion of Br-PAHs in sediment similar to Cl-PAHs in sediment. It was inferred that the sources of Br-PAHs in sediment were different from Cl-PAHs in sediment.

RESUMEN

Thousands of organic pollutants are intentionally and unintentionally discharged into water bodies, adversely affecting the ecological environment and human health. Screening for organic pollutants that pose a potential risk in aquatic environments is essential for risk management. This review evaluates the processes, methods, and technologies used to screen such pollutants in the aquatic environment and discuss their advantages and disadvantages, in addition to the challenges and knowledge gaps in this field. Combining non-target screening, target screening, and suspect screening is often effective for compiling a list of potential risk compounds and enables the quantitative analysis of these compounds. Sample preparation technologies and pollutant detection technologies considerably affect the results of pollutant screening. The limited amount of chemical and toxicological information contained in databases hinders the screening of organic pollutants with potential risk. Machine learning, high-throughput methods, and other technologies will increase the accuracy and convenience of screening for high-risk pollutants. This review provides an important reference for screening these compounds in aquatic environments and can be used in future pollutant screening and risk management.

RESUMEN

In this study, we investigated the concentration distribution of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives in the effluents of 5 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Beijing, China for eight months. We first identified the coexistence of PAHs, chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in the effluents of WWTPs. Three Cl-PAHs and 7 Br-PAHs were first found. The total concentrations of PAHs, Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs and OPAHs ranged from 8.99-88.38, n.d.-5.70, n.d.-13.11 ng L-1 and 15.47-106.92 ng L-1, respectively. In terms of temporal distributions, the total concentrations of PAHs and OPAHs presented a decreasing trend from April to November and the total concentrations of Cl-PAHs and Br-PAHs fluctuated at lower levels. These results indicated that these compounds will be long-term discharged into the receiving river. In addition, Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs and OPAHs were likely generated by transformations occurring during chlorination disinfection. For ecological risk assessment, risk quotients of 6 compounds, indeno[1,2,3-cd] pyrene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, 6-bromobenzo[a]pyrene, 1,8-dibromopyrene and 1,6-dibromopyrene, were thought to indicate high ecological risk (fish). Furthermore, Cl-PAHs, Br-PAHs and OPAHs in the effluents of WWTPs can cause more serious environmental hazards than the corresponding PAHs.

RESUMEN

Recently, derivates of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have aroused increasing concerns due to potential health problems they cause. In this study, we first found the coexistence of PAHs, chlorinated PAHs (Cl-PAHs), brominated PAHs (Br-PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in tap water. Twenty-six compounds including 13 PAHs, 5 Cl-PAHs, 5 Br-PAHs, and 3 OPAHs were detected. Total concentrations of PAHs (2.50-56.90 ng L-1) and OPAHs (n.d. to 80.34 ng L-1) were relatively higher than those of Cl-PAHs (0.30-11.28 ng L-1) and Br-PAHs (n.d. to 8.20 ng L-1). We calculated the 95th percentile incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values of PAHs and HPAHs. In all sampling sites, although no ILCR values for PAHs and HPAHs were higher than 1.00E-06, results still indicates there is still a low cancer risk existed. In addition, regional impact was established by combining ILCR values with population density. Predicted cancer incidence (PCI, people km-2) was calculated to evaluate regional impact more comprehensively. The results were different from previous hypothesis that sampling sites with high ILCR values may not necessarily present high regional impacts. RESUMEN

Hypobromous acid (HOBr), a highly reactive active species, can be formed and impact reaction processes with organic pollutants in source water during chlorination disinfection of the water containing bromide (Br-). In this study, we investigated the transformation kinetics of 10 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and formation mechanisms of transformation products in the presence of Br- during chlorination. The results indicated that HOBr can accelerate the processes of electrophilic substitution (ES) and single electron transfer (ET) reactions in PAHs, and the second-order rate constants of HOBr are 102-103 times higher than those of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) with PAHs. HOBr was more conductive to induce ES reactions than HOCl. In water containing Br-, HOBr and HOCl dominate the reaction processes with PAHs, although other active bromine species may still affect reaction processes. In terms of transformation products, higher reactivity of HOBr results from faster formation of oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) and halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) than HOCl. As an example of 3 model PAHs, anthracene transforms faster to its oxygenated products at a higher concentration, while pyrene and fluorene transform faster to halogenated products. These fundamental results were essential to understanding the transformation kinetics of PAHs and the formation of toxic disinfection by-products in the presence of Br-.
