RESUMEN

In recent years, the rotational Doppler effect (RDE) has been widely used in rotational motion measurement. However, the performance of existing detection systems based on the RDE are generally limited by the drastic reduction of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to the influence of atmospheric turbulence, partial obscuration of the vortex beam (VB) during propagation, and misalignment between the optical axis of VB and the rotational axis of the object, which poses a challenge for practical applications. In this paper, we proposed a coherent detection method of the RDE measurement based on triple Fourier transform. First, the weak RDE signal in backscattered light is amplified by using the balanced homodyne detection method, and the amplified signal still retains the same characteristic of severe broadening in the frequency domain as the original signal. Furthermore, we proposed the triple Fourier transform to extract the broadened RDE frequency shift signal after the coherent amplification. The proposed method significantly improves the SNR of RDE measurement and facilitates the accurate extraction of rotational speed, which helps to further improve the RDE detection range and promote its practical application.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the clinical effects of myofunctional treatment on children with functional mouth breathing by cephalometric radiographs and study models. METHODS: A total of 224 children (6-10 years old; 114 males and 110 females; SNA°: 82.24 ± 1.67°; ANB°: 2.79 ± 0.80°, 28° < SN-GoGn° < 37°) formed three groups: MB-M group (mouth breathers with myofunctional treatment,n = 75); MB-N group (mouth breathers with no treatment,n = 70); NB group (nasal breathers with no treatment, n = 79). A blind evaluation of cephalometric radiographs and study models was conducted at T1(pre-study) and T2 (post-study), respectively. RESULTS: Two hundred four children (MB-M:66, MB-N:68, NB:70) completed the present study. At T1, MB-M and MB-N groups, compared to their NB counterpart, had greater anterior lower facial height(P < 0.01) and overjet(P < 0.001) but shorter overbite and maxillary canines width (P < 0.001). At T2, the MB-N group exhibited a higher ANB angle, anterior lower facial height, and overjet, but shorter overbite and maxillary canines width (P < 0.001). From T1 to T2, the anterior lower facial height increased, overbite and the maxillary canines width further decreased in the MB-N group (P < 0.001). However, in the MB-M group, the incisors were retracted, overbite increased (P < 0.001), anterior lower facial height increased insignificantly (P > 0.05), and maxillary canines width increased slightly (P < 0.05). In the NB and MB-M groups, the mandible showed a normal tendency to grow forward, whereas, in the MB-N group, the mandible showed a tendency to grow downward (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Mouth breathers demonstrated increased anterior facial height and overjet but reduced overbite and maxillary arch width, which improved significantly following myofunctional treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether the subjects with mouth breathing (MB) or nasal breathing (NB) with different sagittal skeletal patterns showed different maxillary arch and pharyngeal airway characteristics. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans from 70 children aged 10 to 12 years with sagittal skeletal Classes I and II were used to measure the pharyngeal airway, maxillary width, palatal area, and height. The independent t-test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for the intragroup analysis of pharyngeal airway and maxillary arch parameters. RESULTS: In the Skeletal Class I group, nasopharyngeal airway volume (P < 0.01), oropharyngeal airway volume (OPV), and total pharyngeal airway volume (TPV) (all P < 0.001) were significantly greater in subjects with NB than in those with MB. Furthermore, intermolar width, maxillary width at the molars, intercanine width, maxillary width at the canines, and palatal area were significantly larger in subjects with NB than in those with MB (all P < 0.001). In the Skeletal Class II group, OPV, TPV (both P < 0.05) were significantly greater in subjects with NB than in those with MB. No significant differences in pharyngeal airway parameters in the MB group between subjects with Skeletal Class I and those with Skeletal Class II. CONCLUSION: Regardless of sagittal Skeletal Class I or II, the pharyngeal airway and maxillary arch in children with MB differ from those with NB. However, the pharyngeal airway was not significantly different between Skeletal Class I and II in children with MB.

As a non-essential heavy metal, cadmium (Cd) is toxic to plants. In the last 15 years, over 70 transcriptome studies have been published to decipher the molecular response mechanism against Cd stress in different plants. To extract generalization results from transcriptomic data across different plants and obtain some hub genes that respond to Cd stress, we carried out a meta-analysis of 32 published datasets. Cluster analysis revealed that plant species played a more decisive role than the media used and exposure time in the transcriptome patterns of plant roots response to Cd. The datasets from a Gramineae-like (GL) group were closer in clustering. 838 DEGs were commonly Cd-regulated in at least nine of 18 GL datasets. Gene ontology and KEGG pathway analyses revealed that oxidative stress-related terms and lignin synthesis-related terms were significantly enriched. Mapman analysis revealed that these common DEGs were mainly involved in regulation, cellular response, secondary metabolism, transport, cell wall and lipid metabolism. In Oryza sativa, 15 DEGs were up-regulated in at least four of five HM (As, Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb) groups, such as Os10g0517500 (methionine gamma-lyase) and Os01g0159800 (bHLH107). Moreover, our datasets can be used to retrieve log2FC value of specific genes across 29 studies (48 datasets), which provides data reference for the subsequent selection of HM-related genes. Our results provide the basis for further understanding of Cd tolerance mechanisms in plants.

Exploring the intricate pathogenesis of Vascular Dementia (VD), there is a noted absence of potent treatments available in the current medical landscape. A new brain-protective medication developed in China, Edaravone dexboeol (EDB), has shown promise due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, albeit with a need for additional research to elucidate its role and mechanisms in VD contexts. In a research setup, a VD model was established utilizing Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, subjected to permanent bilateral typical carotid artery occlusion (2VO). Behavioral assessment of the rats was conducted using the Bederson test and pole climbing test, while cognitive abilities, particularly learning and memory, were evaluated via the novel object recognition test and the Morris water maze test. Ensuing, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-4, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were determined through Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Synaptic plasticity-related proteins, synaptophysin (SYP), post-synaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95), and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor proteins (NR1, NR2A, NR2B) were investigated via Western blotting technique. The findings imply that EDB has the potential to ameliorate cognitive deficiencies, attributed to VD, by mitigating oxidative stress, dampening inflammatory responses, and modulating the NMDA receptor signaling pathway, furnishing new perspectives into EDB's mechanism and proposing potential avenues for therapeutic strategies in managing VD.

OBJECTIVE: For pediatric lateral condylar fractures (LCFs) of the humerus, it is often hard to determine the stability of the fracture based on the Song classification, especially for those categorized as Song stages 2 and 3. This study aims to define the characteristics of cartilage injury and assess the stability of LCFs classified as Song stages 2 and 3 on post-traumatic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: This was a retrospective study based on imaging data, conducted with a short follow-up period. From January 2016 to May 2019, data of all patients with Song 2 and Song 3 LCFs treated at two institutions were collected. Based on the inclusion criteria, a total of 62 patients with Song stage 2/3 LCF were included. All radiographs were selected for observation and classification for comparison by two observers, both experienced pediatric orthopedic surgeons. MRIs scans for comparison were analyzed in three consecutive coronal sections and cross-sections. Patients were treated conservatively with casting or surgically with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP). RESULTS: Altogether 62 cases between 1.5 to 9 years old were included. Reliability analysis revealed poor, moderate, or good agreement between the two observers (range, 0.149-0.633). Both observers showed moderate or good consistency (range, 0.413-0.611). Among the 62 patients diagnosed with Song stages 2 and 3 fractures on initial radiographs, only two patients (3%) had complete fractures with complete disruption of the cartilage hinge as seen on MRI. The hinge was generally located in the posterior-inferior region of the distal humeral cartilage as indicated on MRI. There was no significant difference between Song stages 2 and 3 with regard to ratio of hinge to total values in any cross-sections, nor was there any significant difference in the completeness of the coronal sections (P > 0.05). Of the 62 patients treated, 50 were managed conservatively with casting and 12 underwent CRPP. Forty-nine of the remaining 60 patients (97%) with incomplete fractures were managed conservatively, while the remaining 11 patients were managed with CRPP. All patients with incomplete fractures showed bone healing and no evidence of lateral condyle displacement on follow-up radiographs. CONCLUSIONS: The Song stage 2 or 3 classification is not entirely accurate and is inadequate at guiding treatment outcomes. The cartilage hinge was most likely located posteroinferiorly within the distal humeral epiphysis. According to our findings, conservative treatment with an effective cast or splint may be sufficient for bone healing in case of incomplete cartilage fractures.

Purpose: We aimed to compare the outcomes between closed reduction (CR) and open reduction (OR) in children aged 6-24 months with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) who could be reduced safely and stably by the closed reduction operation. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 77 patients who underwent CR or OR for DDH. Fifty-one patients (56 hips) underwent CR, 26 (29 hips) underwent OR. The demographic data, International Hip Dysplasia Institute classification and acetabular index (AI) before reduction and the centre-edge angle (CEA), AI, Alsberg angle (AA), Reimer's migration index (RMI), and height-to-width index (HWI) of the epiphysis were compared between two groups at the final follow-up. The percentage of coxa magna > 15% of the normal side and AA > 81° were calculated. Results: At the final follow-up, the mean AA in the CR and OR groups were 77.66° (60°-89°) and 81.97° (73°-91°) (p = 0.001), respectively, there were 32.14% and 58.62% of the hips with an AA > 81° (p = 0.019). The frequency of coxa magna > 15% of the normal side was higher in the OR group (60.9%) than in the CR group (6.5%) (p < 0.001). There was no difference in the improvement of AI, CEA, HWI, and RMI. Conclusion: In children aged 6-24 months with DDH, if a stable and safe CR can be obtained but with medial joint space up to 6mm, CR should be attempted first.

Caffeine is a characteristic bioactive compound in tea and coffee plants, which is synthesized and accumulated extensively in leaves and seeds. However, little is known about the regulatory mechanism of caffeine synthesis in plants. This study compared the caffeine metabolite between tea and coffee plants. We found that tea leaves contained significantly higher caffeine than coffee leaves, which is perhaps due to more members of N-methyltransferase (NMT) genes as well as higher expression levels in tea plants. Substantial numbers of transcription factors were predicted to be involved in caffeine biosynthesis regulation, combining weighted gene co-expression network analysis and the cis-element of NMT promoter analysis in tea and coffee plants. Furthermore, analysis of the transcription factors from the caffeine-related modules suggested that the regulatory mechanism of caffeine biosynthesis was probably partly conservative in tea and coffee plants. This study provides an essential resource for the regulatory mechanism of caffeine biosynthesis in plants.

Sclerotinia diseases are important plant fungal diseases that, causes huge economic worldwide losses every year. Ciboria shiraiana is the main pathogen that results in mulberry sclerotia diseases. Sclerotia and appressoria play important roles in long-term pathogen survival and in host infection during life and disease cycles. However, the molecular mechanisms of sclerotial development and appressoria formation in C. shiraiana have not been well studied. Here, an Asm1p, Phd1p, Sok2p, Efg1p and StuAp (APSES)-type transcription factor in C. shiraiana, CsXbp1, involved in sclerotial development and appressoria formation was functionally characterized. Bioinformatics analyses showed that CsXbp1 contained an APSES-type DNA binding domain. The expression levels of CsXbp1 were higher in sclerotia and during later stages of infection. Compared with wild-type strains, hyphal growth was slower, the number and weight of sclerotia were reduced significantly, and appressoria formation was obviously delayed in CsXbp1 RNA interference (RNAi) strains. Moreover, the CsXbp1 RNAi strains showed weakened pathogenicity owing to compound appressoria defects. Tobacco rattle virus-mediated host-induced gene silencing enabled Nicotiana benthamiana to increase its resistance to C. shiraiana by reducing the CsXbp1 transcripts level. Thus, CsXbp1 plays vital roles in sclerotial formation, appressoria formation, and pathogenicity in C. shiraiana. This study provides new insights into the infection mechanisms of C. shiraiana and plant resistance breeding.

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is achieved by using mechanical stimuli, which lead to the remodeling of periodontal tissues. Previous findings have demonstrated that autophagy may be one of the cell responses to mechanical stress. As a key structure in the integrin pathway, integrin linked­kinase (ILK) may play a role in the transmission of these mechanical signals. In addition, ILK is an important upstream molecule that regulates autophagy, under the influence of phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K). Therefore, exploring the effect of mechanical stress on autophagy and the associated role of ILK/PI3K is of utmost significance to understanding the mechanism behind OTM. In the present study, human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) were embedded into a collagen­alginate complex hydrogel for three­dimensional (3D) culturing. Static compressive stress (2.5 g/cm2) was loaded using the uniform weight method for 5, 15, 30, and 60 min. The autophagy of hPDLCs was detected by the expression of Beclin­1 (BECN1) and ATG­5 using RT­qPCR and LC3, respectively, using immunofluorescence. The results showed that the level of autophagy and gene expression of ILK increased significantly under static compressive stress. In ILK­silenced cells, static compressive stress could also upregulate ILK expression and increase the levels of autophagy. After PI3K inhibition, the increase in the autophagy level and the upregulation of ILK expression disappeared. These findings suggest that static compressive stress can induce autophagy in hPDLCs in a rapid, transient process, regulated by ILK and PI3K. Moreover, this static stress can upregulate ILK expression in a PI3K­dependent manner.

SDD17, a delta-15 desaturase from the fungus Saprolegnia can convert arachidonic acid to eicosapentanoic acid in yeast, plant embryos, and mammalian cells. Here, we generated transgenic mice that carried two copies of codon-optimized sdd17 cDNA within a non-coding domain of chromosome 6. RT-PCR analysis revealed that the foreign gene was expressed in the transgenic tissues. Gas chromatography showed that the levels of total unsaturated fatty acids in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues were significantly (p<0.05) increased in transgenic mice compared to non-transgenic mice at 3 or 8 weeks of age. In addition, the serum concentrations of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in transgenic females, but not in males, were significantly lower than those in sex-matched non-transgenic mice. These results suggest that endogenous sdd17 expression is beneficial for mammalian health and that its effects on fatty acid profiles may differ between sexes.
