RESUMEN

AIMS: This study was designed to investigate, in an in vivo setting, the effects of single and combined infections with either Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and/or Escherichia coli on the chicken immune response induced by Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine. METHODS AND RESULTS: Humoral immunity was measured through detection of NDV antibody and anti-NDV IgG titres using haemagglutination-inhibition test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. In addition, the expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines' genes (interleukin (IL) 6, IL4 and interferon (IFN) γ) were analysed using quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Significant (P < 0·05) results in all immunological parameters were detected in the vaccinated noninfected chicken group in comparison with those in groups exposed to bacterial infections. Bacterial infection along with vaccination hampered the NDV antibodies production and reduced the vaccine upregulated cytokine genes. The vaccinated mixed infection group reported lower antibody titres and cytokines expression levels compared to those in the single infection groups. All the previously enhanced immunological parameters reflected the maximum protection post challenge with velogenic viscerotropic NDV in the vaccinated noninfected chicken group. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide novel insights into the immunosuppression activities of MG and E. coli infection in chickens vaccinated against NDV. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study hopes to provide a better insight to the immunosuppressive action of bacterial pathogens in chickens. This will help to improve biosecurity strategies during NDV vaccination in the future.

RESUMEN

A pulsed ladar based object-recognition system with applications to automatic target recognition (ATR) is presented. The approach used is to fit the sensed range images to range templates extracted through a laser physics based simulation applied to geometric target models. A projection-based prescreener filters out more than 80% of candidate templates. For recognition, an M of N pixel matching scheme for internal shape matching is combined with a silhouette matching scheme. The system was trained on synthetic data obtained from the simulation, and has been blind tested on a data set containing real ladar images of military vehicles at various orientations and ranges. Successful blind testing on real imagery demonstrates the utility of synthetic imagery for training of recognizers operating on ladar imagery.

RESUMEN

The internal fine structure of the partially calcified Schistosoma haematobium eggs in the lower ureteral segments of Saudi patients with chronic urinary schistosomiasis is described. The egg shell is penetrated by cribriform pores and consists of the three previously described layers: outer microspinous, middle intermediately dense, and inner dense layers. The space between the egg shell and the developing embryo is partitioned by three layers. An outer acellular Reynolds' layer of unknown origin and function consists of a fribrillar material mixed with a finely granular matrix extending to the egg-shell pores via racemose channels. The middle von Lichtenberg's envelope consists of a single layer of flattened epithelial cells containing several mitochondria as in other previously described Schistosoma eggs suggesting an active, and perhaps selective, transport in or out of the egg shell. The inner fluid filled cavity, or Lehman's lacuna, between the von Lichtenberg's envelope and the embryo contains numerous lipoid bodies suggesting a relation to vitelline cells. Four systems (out of eight previously described for the free, mature Schistosoma miracidium) have been recognized for the first time in the developing miracidium within S. haematobium eggs and include: (1) ciliated epidermal plates representing the epithelial system, (2) an outer circular and an inner longitudinal muscle layer forming the musculatures, (3) lateral penetration glands, and (4) ciliated flame cells representing the excretory system.
