Plants are arguably the most visible components of stormwater bioretention basins and play key roles in stabilizing soils and removing water through transpiration. In regions with cold winters, bioretention basins along roadways can receive considerable quantities of deicing salt, much of which migrates out of the systems prior to the onset of plant growth but the rest remains in the soil. The resulting effects on plants presumably vary with time (due to annual weather patterns), space (because stormwater exposure is location-dependent), and biology (because plant taxa differ in their salt tolerance). The goal of this study was to investigate the magnitude of deicing salt's effects on bioretention plants and how it varies with spatial, temporal, and biological factors. The study took place in a set of five bioretention basins in Philadelphia, USA that receive runoff from a major highway. Over a five-year period, the electrical conductivity (EC) of influent stormwater frequently exceeded 1 mS cm-1 in winter, and occasionally surpassed that of seawater (∼50 mS cm-1). In both of the years when soil EC was measured as well, it remained elevated through all spring months, especially near basin inlets and centers. Mortality of nine plant taxa ranged widely after three years (0-90%), with rankings largely corresponding to salt tolerances. Moreover, leaf areas and/or crown volumes were strongly reduced in proportion to stormwater exposure in seven of these taxa. In the three taxa evaluated for tissue concentrations of 14 potentially toxic elements (Hemerocallis 'Happy Returns', Iris 'Caesar's Brother', and Cornus sericea 'Cardinal'), only sodium consistently exceeded the toxicity limit for salt intolerant plants (500 mg kg-1). However, exceedance of the sodium toxicity limit was associated with plants' topographic positions, with median concentrations greatest in the bottom of basins and least on basin rims. This study demonstrates that deicing salts can have detrimental effects on plants in bioretention basins, with the strongest effects likely to occur in years with the greatest snowfall (and therefore deicing salt use), in portions of basins with greatest stormwater exposure (typically around inlets and centers), and in plants with minimal salinity tolerance. Our results therefore underscore the value of installing salt-tolerant taxa in basins likely to experience any frequency of deicing salt exposure.

RESUMEN

Advance care planning (ACP) is a process to understand and communicate one's wishes, values, and preferences for future medical care. As part of the Choosing Wisely Canada "Time to Talk" initiative, the Canadian Neurological Society (CNS) endorsed the creation of a working group to propose ACP recommendations for patients with neurological illness. A narrative review of primary literature on ACP in neurological and non-neurological illness, medical society guidelines, and publications by patient advocacy groups was conducted. Eight ACP recommendations were deemed relevant and important to Canadian neurology practice and were approved by the CNS Board of Directors. The recommendations are meant to serve as guidance for Canadian neurologists, to stimulate discussion about ACP within the Canadian neurology community, and to encourage neurologists to engage in ACP conversations with their patients.

Internal water storage (IWS) can be included in bioretention practices to increase storage capacity or promote denitrification-the microbial reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas. IWS and nitrate dynamics are well studied in laboratory systems. However, the investigation of field environments, consideration of multiple nitrogen species, and determination between mixing versus denitrification is lacking. This study employs in situ monitoring (∼24 h duration) of water level, dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity, nitrogen species, and dual isotopes of a field bioretention IWS system for nine storms events over a year period. Rapid peaks in IWS conductivity, DO, and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations occurred along the rising limb of the IWS water level and indicated a first flush effect. TN concentrations generally peaked during the first ∼0.33 h of sampling and the average peak IWS TN concentration (Cmax = 4.82 ± 2.46 mg-N/L) was 38% and 64% greater than the average TN along the IWS rising and falling limb, respectively. Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and nitrate plus nitrite (NOx) were the dominant nitrogen species of IWS samples. However, average IWS peak ammonium (NH4+) concentrations August through November (0.28 ± 0.47 mg-N/L) demonstrated statistically significant shifts compared to February through May (2.72 ± 0.95 mg-N/L). Average lysimeter conductivity measurements were more than ten times higher February through May. The sustained presence of sodium observed in lysimeters, from road salt application, contributed to NH4+ flushing from the unsaturated media layer. Dual isotope analysis showed denitrification occurred for discrete time intervals along the tail of the NOx concentration profile and the hydrologic falling limb. Longer antecedent dry periods (17 days) did not correlate to enhanced denitrification but did correspond to more leaching of soil organic nitrogen. Results from field monitoring highlight the complexities of nitrogen management in bioretention systems. First flush behavior into the IWS suggests management to prevent TN export is most critical during the onset of a storm.

Clinical disease caused by infection with Listeria monocytogenes is rare in adult horses, and there is a paucity of ante-mortem clinicopathologic changes for this species reported in the literature. Confirmatory diagnosis is difficult and often requires post-mortem sampling of the brainstem. This report details a case of meningoencephalitis caused by Listeria monocytogenes in an adult American quarter horse gelding presenting with central neurologic signs. Pre-mortem analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed a mononuclear, primarily lymphocytic, pleocytosis, which is a reported finding in other species with listeriosis. Post-mortem histopathologic changes of the brainstem were characteristic of listeriosis, and infection was confirmed with immunohistochemical labeling and bacterial culture. Key clinical message: Listeriosis should be included as a differential diagnosis in neurologic horses with mononuclear pleocytosis identified on cerebrospinal fluid analysis.

Ce rapport détaille un cas de méningo-encéphalite causée par L. monocytogenes chez un hongre quarter horse américain adulte présentant des signes neurologiques centraux. L'analyse pré-mortem du liquide céphalo-rachidien a révélé une pléocytose mononucléaire, principalement lymphocytaire, qui est une trouvaille rapportée chez d'autres espèces atteintes de listériose. Les modifications histopathologiques post-mortem du tronc cérébral étaient caractéristiques de la listériose et l'infection a été confirmée par un marquage immunohistochimique et une culture bactérienne.Message clinique clé :La listériose doit être incluse comme diagnostic différentiel chez les chevaux avec signes neurologiques présentant une pléocytose mononucléaire identifiée lors de l'analyse du liquide céphalo-rachidien.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Conventional bioretention soil media (BSM: e.g., loamy sand) is employed in infiltration-based stormwater management practices, but concerns exist on its limited sorption capacity. However, limited quantitative data is available, particularly considering the wide range of contaminants and water quality conditions that occur in stormwater. This study utilized batch tests to investigate the capability of conventional BSM for simultaneous removal of three nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate), six metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn), and four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: naphthalene, acenaphthylene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) from synthetic stormwater. Moreover, the effects of co-contaminants and different stormwater chemistry parameters (pH, salinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) on BSM sorption capacity were investigated. BSM was not effective for nutrients removal; however, it had good removal efficiency for metals such as Cu, Pb, and Cr which are less soluble at neutral pH values compared to metals such as Ni, Cd and Zn. Moreover, BSM was effective for removing PAHs with higher hydrophobicity such as pyrene and phenanthrene. Metals sorption capacity of BSM was greater at higher pH, lower salinity and DOC; however, the sorption capacity of BSM for PAHs was not sensitive to stormwater chemistry parameters. However, competitive sorption had a notable effect on low molecular weight PAHs, Cd, and Ni. This study provides a quantitative evaluation of the BSM performance and compares the sorption capacity to potential sorptive amendments used in stormwater management. While select sorbent amendments out-performed the BSM, this was not universal and was contaminant specific; careful consideration of water quality enhancement goals and solution chemistry are required in selecting a sorbent. Overall, this study identifies the possible limitations in BSM compositions and factors that may adversely affect BSM sorption capacity, and finally describes options to enhance BSM performance and recommendations for future research.

Diagnosing the cause of abdominal disease in goats can be challenging. Clinical history, physical investigation, and laboratory findings do not always allow definitive identification of intra-abdominal disease or the underlying cause. Multidetector CT (MDCT) has become more readily available and now often replaces or augments other abdominal imaging techniques. The objective of this retrospective, observational, descriptive study was to investigate the clinical utility of MDCT for evaluation of the abdomen in goats with suspected abdominal disease involving the urinary, gastrointestinal, reproductive tracts and abdominal wall. Medical records (1/2009-12/2017) were reviewed for all goats undergoing an abdominal MDCT. Signalment, clinical history, examination and MDCT findings and outcome were recorded and categorized by abdominal organ system and wall lesion. Clinical problems and MDCT findings were compared in the various abdominal categories. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and diagnostic odds ratio (OR) were calculated for MDCT, using clinical examination findings as the reference standard. A total of 85 goats underwent an abdominal MDCT examination. The sensitivity of MDCT for detecting urinary, gastrointestinal, reproductive tract, and abdominal wall abnormalities in goats with clinical problems related to these body systems was high at 94.7 %, 78.3%, 94.1%, and 100%, and the specificity was high at 95.6%, 96.7%, 93.9%, and 100%, respectively. The PPV was 94.7%, 90.0 %, 80.0%, and 100.0%, the NPV was 95.6%, 92.1%, 98.4%, and 100%, and the OR were 387.0, 104.4, 248.0, and infinite. In conclusion, findings supported the use of MDCT as an adjunct diagnostic test for assessing goats with abdominal disease.

Protein biosynthesis is fundamental to cellular life and requires the efficient functioning of the translational machinery. At the center of this machinery is the ribosome, a ribonucleoprotein complex that depends heavily on Mg2+ for structure. Recent work has indicated that other metal cations can substitute for Mg2+, raising questions about the role different metals may play in the maintenance of the ribosome under oxidative stress conditions. Here, we assess ribosomal integrity following oxidative stress both in vitro and in cells to elucidate details of the interactions between Fe2+ and the ribosome and identify Mn2+ as a factor capable of attenuating oxidant-induced Fe2+-mediated degradation of rRNA. We report that Fe2+ promotes degradation of all rRNA species of the yeast ribosome and that it is bound directly to RNA molecules. Furthermore, we demonstrate that Mn2+ competes with Fe2+ for rRNA-binding sites and that protection of ribosomes from Fe2+-mediated rRNA hydrolysis correlates with the restoration of cell viability. Our data, therefore, suggest a relationship between these two transition metals in controlling ribosome stability under oxidative stress.

Skeletal muscle comprises 40% to 55% of mature body weight in horses, and its mass is determined largely by rates of muscle protein synthesis. In order to support exercise, appropriate energy sources are essential: glucose can support both anaerobic and aerobic exercise, whereas fat can only be metabolized aerobically. Following exercise, ingestion of nonfiber carbohydrates and protein can aid muscle growth and recovery. Muscle glycogen replenishment is slow in horses, regardless of dietary interventions. Several heritable muscle disorders, including type 1 and 2 polysaccharide storage myopathy and recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis, can be managed in part by restricting dietary nonstructural carbohydrate intake.

Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, an emerging viral infection with a global case fatality rate of 35.5%, caused major outbreaks first in 2012 and 2015, though new cases are continuously reported around the world. Transmission is believed to mainly occur in healthcare settings through aerosolized particles. This study uses Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment to develop a generalizable model that can assist with interpreting reported outbreak data or predict risk of infection with or without the recommended strategies. The exposure scenario includes a single index patient emitting virus-containing aerosols into the air by coughing, leading to short- and long-range airborne exposures for other patients in the same room, nurses, healthcare workers, and family visitors. Aerosol transport modeling was coupled with Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the risk of MERS illness for the exposed population. Results from a typical scenario show the daily mean risk of infection to be the highest for the nurses and healthcare workers (8.49 × 10-4 and 7.91 × 10-4 , respectively), and the lowest for family visitors and patients staying in the same room (3.12 × 10-4 and 1.29 × 10-4 , respectively). Sensitivity analysis indicates that more than 90% of the uncertainty in the risk characterization is due to the viral concentration in saliva. Assessment of risk interventions showed that respiratory masks were found to have a greater effect in reducing the risks for all the groups evaluated (>90% risk reduction), while increasing the air exchange was effective for the other patients in the same room only (up to 58% risk reduction).

Equine myofibrillar myopathy (MFM) causes exertional muscle pain and is characterized by myofibrillar disarray and ectopic desmin aggregates of unknown origin. To investigate the pathophysiology of MFM, we compared resting and 3 h postexercise transcriptomes of gluteal muscle and the resting skeletal muscle proteome of MFM and control Arabian horses with RNA sequencing and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation analyses. Three hours after exercise, 191 genes were identified as differentially expressed (DE) in MFM vs. control muscle with >1 log2 fold change (FC) in genes involved in sulfur compound/cysteine metabolism such as cystathionine-beta-synthase ( CBS, ↓4.51), a cysteine and neutral amino acid membrane transporter ( SLC7A10, ↓1.80 MFM), and a cationic transporter (SLC24A1, ↓1.11 MFM). In MFM vs. control at rest, 284 genes were DE with >1 log2 FC in pathways for structure morphogenesis, fiber organization, tissue development, and cell differentiation including > 1 log2 FC in cardiac alpha actin ( ACTC1 ↑2.5 MFM), cytoskeletal desmoplakin ( DSP ↑2.4 MFM), and basement membrane usherin ( USH2A ↓2.9 MFM). Proteome analysis revealed significantly lower antioxidant peroxiredoxin 6 content (PRDX6, ↓4.14 log2 FC MFM), higher fatty acid transport enzyme carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT1B, ↑3.49 MFM), and lower sarcomere protein tropomyosin (TPM2, ↓3.24 MFM) in MFM vs. control muscle at rest. We propose that in MFM horses, altered cysteine metabolism and a deficiency of cysteine-containing antioxidants combined with a high capacity to oxidize fatty acids and generate ROS during aerobic exercise causes chronic oxidation and aggregation of key proteins such as desmin.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess medication prescribing and patient-reported outcomes among people with epilepsy (PWE) in Bhutan and introduce criteria for evaluating unmet epilepsy care needs, particularly in resource-limited settings. METHODS: People with epilepsy in Bhutan (National Referral Hospital, 2014-2015) completed a questionnaire, the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory (QOLIE-31), and an electroencephalogram (EEG). Management gap was the proportion of participants meeting any of six prespecified criteria based on best practices and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. RESULTS: Among 253 participants (53% female, median: 24years), 93% (n=235) were treated with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Seventy-two percent (n=183) had active epilepsy (≥1 seizure in the prior year). At least one criterion was met by 55% (n=138) of participants, whereas the treatment gap encompassed only 5% (n=13). The criteria were the following: 1. Among 18 participants taking no AED, 72% (n=13) had active epilepsy. 2. Among 26 adults on subtherapeutic monotherapy, 46% (n=12) had active epilepsy. 3. Among 48 participants reporting staring spells, 56% (n=27) were treated with carbamazepine or phenytoin. 4. Among 101 female participants aged 14-40years, 23% (n=23) were treated with sodium valproate. 5. Among 67 participants reporting seizure-related injuries, 87% (n=58) had active epilepsy. 6. Among 111 participants with a QOLIE-31 score below 50/100, 77% (n=86) had active epilepsy. Years since first AED treatment (odds ratio: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.12) and epileptiform discharges on EEG (odds ratio: 1.95, 95% CI: 1.15, 3.29) were significantly associated with more criteria met. CONCLUSIONS: By defining the management gap, subpopulations at greatest need for targeted interventions may be prioritized, including those already taking AEDs.

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is a remediation approach that is often used to remediate soil and groundwater contaminated with fuels and chlorinated solvents. At many aqueous film-forming foam-impacted sites, perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) can also be present at concentrations warranting concern. Laboratory experiments were completed using flow-through one-dimensional columns to improve our understanding of how ISCO (i.e., activated persulfate, permanganate, or catalyzed hydrogen peroxide) could affect the fate and transport of PFAAs in saturated porous media. While the resultant data suggest that standard ISCO is not a viable remediation strategy for PFAA decomposition, substantial changes in PFAA transport were observed upon and following the application of ISCO. In general, activated persulfate decreased PFAA transport, while permanganate and catalyzed hydrogen peroxide increased PFAA transport. PFAA sorption increased in the presence of increased aqueous polyvalent cation concentrations or decreased pH. The changes in contaminant mobility were greater than what would be predicted on the basis of aqueous chemistry considerations alone, suggesting that the application of ISCO results in changes to the porous media matrix (e.g., soil organic matter quality) that also influence transport. The application of ISCO is likely to result in changes in PFAA transport, where the direction (increased or decreased transport) and magnitude are dependent on PFAA characteristics, oxidant characteristics, and site-specific factors.

Stormwater runoff contains dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Interactions between DOC and PTEs can impact PTE speciation and mobility, but are not fully understood. Soil samples were collected from a vegetated bioretention bed to investigate the effects of DOC (0, 15, and 50 mg-C/L) on the desorption of 10 PTEs captured by the soil media: Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, Sb, and Pb. In the absence of DOC, the desorbed PTE concentration from bioretention media into the aqueous phase ranking was as follows: Fe > Mn âˆ¼ Zn > Cu > Pb > Sb > As > Co > Sn âˆ¼ Cd. Increased DOC concentrations resulted in a reduction of the soil-water distribution coefficient (Kd) values. The greatest shift in Kd was observed for Cu and lowest for Sb. The PTE sorption capacities were lower for surficial soil samples (lower Kd) compared to the deep soil samples. Overall, the desorbed PTE (average midchannel 55.7 µg/g) fraction accounted for <1.1 % of the total extracted PTEs (5364 µg/g), and while this is a small percentage of the total, this is the fraction that is mobile. The extracted PTE fractions revealed that DOC reduced the organic matter-bound and carbonate-bound fractions. The PTE desorption trends suggest that reducing DOC in stormwater runoff could be an effective measure to mitigate the release of PTEs into the environment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Basilar artery stenting is a rescue therapy in the management of hyperacute stroke. Published data on efficacy and safety are limited. METHODS: A systematic review of published studies was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria were adult patients with ischemic stroke with permanent basilar artery stent placement within 48 h of onset. Data were extracted by two independent reviewers. Additional cases from our institution were identified via a local stroke registry. RESULTS: Of 212 screened articles, patient-level data was reported in 35 studies (87 individuals) and six additional patients were included from our registry. Patients (n = 93, 63 % male; median age 64) most often presented with mid-basilar occlusion (52 %) and 76 % received treatment within 12 hours of onset. Favorable angiographic results occurred in 67 %. The final modified Rankin Scale score (mRS) was 0-3 for 56 % of patients; mortality was 29 %. Those with complete flow post-procedure were more likely to have a final mRS of 0-3 (p = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In 93 cases of basilar stenting in hyperacute stroke, favourable angiographic and functional outcomes were reported in 67 % and 56 % of patients, respectively. International multicenter registries are required to establish benefit and identify patient and technical factors that predict favorable outcomes.

One of the primary technologies currently being deployed for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water is ion exchange (IX). For regenerable IX resins, concentrated PFAS in the resulting spent brine and/or still bottoms requires further treatment. This research demonstrated that PFAS in spent brine and still bottoms can be effectively degraded sonochemically at 1000 kHz. Overall, PFAS degradation was negatively impacted by high total organic carbon (TOC) and residual methanol (MeOH) solvent (up to 50 g/kg; 5% w:w), but was enhanced by the high chloride. The addition of caustic (up to 1 N NaOH) partially mitigated the inhibition by TOC and MeOH. Sonochemical degradation of individual PFAS compounds resulted in significant mineralization to form inorganic fluoride, but small quantities of volatile organic fluorine species (VOF) were noted. This is believed to be the first report of sonochemical degradation of PFAS in ion exchange regeneration wastes, and indicates the possibility for the application of this technology as part of a complete PFAS capture and destruction treatment train.

Size exclusion chromatography (SEC), which separates molecules based on molecular volume, can be coupled with online inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to explore size-dependent metal-natural organic matter (NOM) complexation. To make effective use of this analytical dual detector system, the operator should be mindful of quality control measures. Al, Cr, Fe, Se, and Sn all exhibited columnless attenuation, which indicated unintended interactions with system components. Based on signal-to-noise ratio and peak reproducibility between duplicate analyses of environmental samples, consistent peak time and height were observed for Mg, Cl, Mn, Cu, Br, and Pb. Al, V, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Se, Cd, Sn, and Sb were less consistent overall, but produced consistent measurements in select samples. Ultrafiltering and centrifuging produced similar peak distributions, but glass fiber filtration produced more high molecular weight (MW) peaks. Storage in glass also produced more high MW peaks than did plastic bottles.

QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) sample processing methods have previously been applied to a range of compounds and matrices. This study presents a modified QuEChERS sample processing method that was validated and employed for 24 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for various biological matrices. PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals that have attracted substantial attention as some compounds are acknowledged to be persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative. It is crucial to determine PFAS in diverse environmental matrices. Currently, limited sample processing methods for PFAS in biological matrices are available and the majority only focus on a few compounds such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Thus, there is a demand to develop a sample processing method which is effective for many commonly tested PFAS compounds in environmental biological samples. In this study, the detailed sample processing procedures and method performance are described. The highlights of this method are: •The extraction solvent and salts were adjusted for PFAS extraction from environmental biological matrices.•The modified QuEChERS method is effective for extraction and cleanup from a variety of matrices including algae, plants, invertebrates, amphibians, and fish.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of man-made fluorinated organic chemicals that can accumulate in the environment. In water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), some commonly detected PFAS tend to partition to and concentrate in biosolids where they can act as a source to ecological receptors and may leach to groundwater when land-applied. Although biosolids undergo some stabilization to reduce pathogens before land application, they still contain many microorganisms, contributing to the eventual decomposition of different components of the biosolids. This work demonstrates ways in which microbial weathering can influence biosolids decomposition, degrade PFAS, and impact PFAS partitioning in small-scale, controlled laboratory experiments. In the microbial weathering experiments, compound-specific PFAS biosolids-water partitioning coefficients (Kd) were demonstrated to decrease, on average, 0.4 logs over the course of the 91 day study, with the most rapid changes occurring during the first 10 days. Additionally, the highest rates of lipid, protein, and organic matter removal occurred during the same time. Among the evaluated independent variables, statistical analyses demonstrated that the most significant solids characteristics that impacted PFAS partitioning were organic matter, proteins, lipids, and molecular weight of organics. A multiple linear regression model was built to predict PFAS partitioning behavior in biosolids based on solid characteristics of the biosolids and PFAS characteristics with a R2 value of 0.7391 when plotting predicted and measured log Kd. The findings from this work reveal that microbial weathering can play a significant role in the eventual fate and transport of PFAS and their precursors from biosolids.
