RESUMEN
Xylitol, as an important food additive and fine chemical, has a wide range of applications, including food, medicine, chemical, and feed. This review paper focuses on the research progress of xylitol biosynthesis, from overcoming the limitations of traditional chemical hydrogenation and xylose bioconversion, to the full biosynthesis of xylitol production using green and non-polluting glucose as substrate. In the review, the molecular strategies of wild strains to increase xylitol yield, as well as the optimization strategies and metabolic reconfiguration during xylitol biosynthesis are discussed. Subsequently, on the basis of existing studies, the paper further discusses the current status of research and future perspectives of xylitol production using glucose as a single substrate. The evolution of raw materials from xylose-based five-carbon sugars to glucose is not only cost-saving, but also safe and environmentally friendly, which brings new opportunities for the green industrial chain of xylitol.

INTRODUCTION: Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) MRI is a non-invasive, in vivo techniques which can assess placental perfusion quantitatively, and be useful for evaluating placental microcirculation. Our primary aim was to investigate whether fetal growth restriction (FGR) pregnancies have different placental perfusion and diffusion compared with normal pregnancies using IVIM. A secondary aim was to investigate correlations between placental IVIM parameters and gestational age in normal pregnancy. METHODS: This study population included 17 FGR pregnancies and 36 normal pregnancies between 28 + 3 to 38 + 0 weeks. All women underwent a MRI examination including an IVIM sequence with 9 b-values on a 3.0 T MRI system. The standard diffusion coefficeint (D), pseudodiffusion (D*) and perfusion fraction (f) were calculated. RESULTS: Placental f was significantly lower in the FGR group than that in the normal group (33.96 ± 2.62(%) vs 38.48 ± 5.31(%), p = 0.002). Placental D and D* in two groups showed no statistical significance (P > 0.05). Placental f moderately increased with increasing gestational age in normal pregnancies (r = 0.411, p = 0.013), and there existed a negative correlation between D values and gestational age (r = -0.390, p = 0.019). DISCUSSION: The f values are able to distinguish FGR from normal pregnancies. It can be uses as a feasible index to evaluate placenta perfusion. Gestational age-associated changes in placental IVIM parameters likely reveal trajectories of microvascular perfusion fraction and diffusion characteristics in the normal developing placenta.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), and stretched exponential model (SEM) based on histogram analyses derived from the whole-tumor volume combined with prognostic factors can be used to assess the response to chemotherapy and radiation therapy (CRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 60 patients with LARC who underwent diffusion-weighted imaging with 9b values (0-1000s/mm2) before CRT. Histograms derived from the whole-tumor volume were used to obtain the ADC, IVIM (Dslow, Dfast, and f), and SEM parameters (distributed diffusion coefficient (DDC) and α). The histogram metrics and prognostic factors before CRT were compared between pathological complete response (pCR) and non-pCR patients. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) were generated to analyze the histogram metrics and prognostic factors. RESULTS: A significant difference was only found in the tumor volume between the pCR and non-pCR groups (p = 0.033, AUC = 0.740). The ADC mean, DDC median, and most of the histogram metrics were significantly lower in the pCR group than the non-pCR group (p = 0.000-0.025), and AUC was highest for the ADC mean (0.890). Only the Dslow median differed significantly between the two groups (p = 0.023, AUC = 0.721). However, the Dfast, f, and α histogram metrics did not differ significantly between the pCR and non-pCR groups. The AUC for the ADC mean combined with the tumor volume was 0.908, with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 81%. The inter-observer agreements were good or excellent for the ADC and SEM histogram parameters but generally fair for IVIM. CONCLUSION: The whole-tumor ADC mean combined with the tumor volume was highly accurate for predicting pCR. The IVIM models were inferior to ADC and SEM at predicting pCR.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that combining apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value with the Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) index value might provide a reliable evaluation of the activity of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and that contrast-enhanced (CE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is unnecessary. However, the results were based on confirming only a small random sample. This study aimed to assess the role of CE-MRI in differentiating the disease activity of AS by comparing ADC value with a large sample. METHODS: A total of 115 patients with AS were enrolled in accordance with Bath AS Disease Activity Index and laboratory indices, and 115 patients were divided into two groups, including active group (n = 69) and inactive group (n = 46). SPARCC, ΔSI, and ADC values were obtained from the short tau inversion recovery (STIR), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and CE-MRI, respectively. One-way analysis of variance and receiver operating characteristic analysis were performed for all parameters. RESULTS: The optimal cutoff values (with sensitivity, specificity, respective area under the curve, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio) for the differentiation between active and inactive groups are as follows: SPARCC = 6 (72.06%, 82.61%, 0.836, 4.14, 0.34); ΔSI (%) = 153 (80.6%, 84.78%, 0.819, 5.3, 0.23); ADC value = 1.15 × 10-3 mm2/s (72.73%, 81.82%, 0.786, 4, 0.33). No statistical differences were found among the predictive values of SPARCC, ΔSI, and ADC. Multivariate analysis showed no significant difference between the combination of SPARCC and ADC values with and without ΔSI. CONCLUSIONS: Using large sample, we concluded that the combination of STIR and DWI would play significant roles in assessing the disease activity, and CE-MRI sequence is not routinely used in imaging of AS to avoid renal fibrosis and aggravation of kidney disease.

This study aimed to investigate the potential of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) diffusion-weighted MR imaging in assessing solitary pulmonary lesions (SPLs). Sixty-two patients with pathologically confirmed SPLs, including 51 and 11 cases of malignant and benign lesions, respectively, were assessed. Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) with 13 b values was used to derive apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and IVIM parameters, including true diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (f). Our results showed that, there was an excellent inter-observer agreement on the measurements of D and ADC between observers (inter-class correlation coefficient, ICC = 0.902 and 0.884, respectively). Meanwhile, f and D* showed good and substantial reproducibility (ICC = 0.787 and 0.623, respectively). D and ADC of malignant lesions were significantly lower than those of benign lesions (both P ≤ 0.001), while similar values were obtained in both groups for D* and f (both P > 0.05). In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, D showed the highest area under curve (AUC) for distinguishing malignant from benign lesions, followed by ADC. Accompanying signs of SPLs have specific features on IVIM maps. In conclusion, IVIM provides functional information in characterizing SPLs which is helpful to differential diagnosis. D and ADC have a significantly higher diagnostic value than f and D*.

A pig skeletal muscle expressed sequence tag (EST, accession number BM083186) was found to encode amino acid sequences with high homology to human TNNC2. In silico cloning obtained a 843 bp sequence which we named pig fast skeletal troponin C gene (TNNC2). The open reading frame of TNNC2 was between nucleotides 201 - 683, and was confirmed by RT-PCR. The gene encoded a 160 amino acid residue protein and had the highest similarity with human and mouse homologues, with percent identities being 93.6%, 90.5%, respectively. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis of mRNA from different normal tissues indicted that the TNNC2 gene was expressed in the skeletal muscle and the levels of expression were higher in the longissimus dorsi of the Duroc pig than in the same tissue of the Lantang pig.
