RESUMEN

Homicide is a pressing issue in America. This study used qualitative data obtained from focus groups of family and friends of homicide victims (FFHV) to assess and better meet the needs of victims post homicide. The study results posit myriad changes to the systematic response to homicide. The article concludes with recommendations for training and resources, with specific attention to legal, law enforcement, medical, and behavioral health providers.

RESUMEN

Emerging technological tools like Artificial Intelligence-based Chatbots, digital educational alternatives and market-driven educational systems pose a challenge to the fundamental aim of the higher education system; comprehensive education for well-being. Therefore, this research aims to devise and evaluate strategies to impart new-age competencies to innovate socially and morally appropriate solutions in a modern competitive innovative society. The 8-month-long immersive learning framework (ILF), was designed based on the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) paradigm. The framework was evaluated with 133 newly joined postgraduate students doing their science or arts programmes from a higher education institution in Kerala, India. The outcome variables included well-being, depressive symptoms, personality patterns, and sub-domains of philosophy of human nature. The follow-up scores showed a significant improvement in well-being (Mean difference: 1.15, p = 0.005), trustworthiness (Mean difference: 14.74, p = 0.000), strength of will (Mean difference: 10.11, p = 0.000), altruism (Mean difference: 12.85, p = 0.000), and independence (Mean difference: 11.93, p = 0.000). Depression scores did not improve significantly. However, the intervention shielded them from the adjustment issues that often accompany any transition. The ILF framework can help students develop their personal and professional selves if it is implemented collaboratively in a reflective setting. It can also instil moral rectitude and a prosocial mindset.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Families and friends of homicide victims (FFHV) interact with healthcare systems almost immediately after the traumatic event. Their interactions with healthcare providers can either facilitate healing, have a neutral effect, or compound an already painful experience. When trauma victims are admitted to the hospital, resources are necessarily diverted on their behalf with less consistent attention paid to their families and friends. The interactions surrounding the immediate circumstance as well as experiences in the weeks to months after can have significant long-term impact. This study explores the needs and experiences of FFHV when interacting with the healthcare system to inform physicians' and providers' interactions and provision of services. METHODS: This study of 3 focus groups sought to understand these experiences with the healthcare system to better inform physicians' and providers' interactions and provision of services. RESULTS: Using the framework approach, the study ultimately built upon the existing trauma-informed care (TIC) framework to include several emergent themes. Participants discussed the need for death notification sensitivity, benefits of coordinated care, barriers to accessing care, the need for physician empathy and attention, the lack of trauma screening, and hastily prescribing medications. CONCLUSION: This TIC approach can inform future healthcare interactions with the FFHV as it grounds the patients' experience in their historical reality and may improve future provider-patient relationship.

RESUMEN

Medical and public health research supports an ongoing need for health promotion in meeting menstrual hygiene needs, including menstrual hygiene management (MHM) education and the adoption of reusable sanitary napkins. This quality improvement project focuses on menstruation education for adolescent girls in rural Tamil Nadu, India and the promotion of reusable sanitary napkins. Results indicate a significant improvement in MHM knowledge, confidence in managing menstruation, adoption of reusable sanitary napkins, and a decrease in missed school days. These findings support global recommendations for health promotion in India.

RESUMEN

This study examined self-concept, resiliency, and social support in 107 children and youth placed in foster care in New York City. Of the children and youth, 55 were placed in family foster care, while the remaining 52 children and youth were placed in a kinship foster home. Significantly more of mothers of the kinship foster care children and youth were homeless or substance abusing, yet visited their children more often than the family foster care youth. These same kinship-placed children and youth had significantly more robust self-concept, performance, and personal attribute scores. Implications for these findings are highlighted.
