RESUMEN

The urban peoples of the Swahili coast traded across eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean and were among the first practitioners of Islam among sub-Saharan people1,2. The extent to which these early interactions between Africans and non-Africans were accompanied by genetic exchange remains unknown. Here we report ancient DNA data for 80 individuals from 6 medieval and early modern (AD 1250-1800) coastal towns and an inland town after AD 1650. More than half of the DNA of many of the individuals from coastal towns originates from primarily female ancestors from Africa, with a large proportion-and occasionally more than half-of the DNA coming from Asian ancestors. The Asian ancestry includes components associated with Persia and India, with 80-90% of the Asian DNA originating from Persian men. Peoples of African and Asian origins began to mix by about AD 1000, coinciding with the large-scale adoption of Islam. Before about AD 1500, the Southwest Asian ancestry was mainly Persian-related, consistent with the narrative of the Kilwa Chronicle, the oldest history told by people of the Swahili coast3. After this time, the sources of DNA became increasingly Arabian, consistent with evidence of growing interactions with southern Arabia4. Subsequent interactions with Asian and African people further changed the ancestry of present-day people of the Swahili coast in relation to the medieval individuals whose DNA we sequenced.

Traditional substance use (SU) surveillance methods, such as surveys, incur substantial lags. Due to the continuously evolving trends in SU, insights obtained via such methods are often outdated. Social media-based sources have been proposed for obtaining timely insights, but methods leveraging such data cannot typically provide fine-grained statistics about subpopulations, unlike traditional approaches. We address this gap by developing methods for automatically characterizing a large Twitter nonmedical prescription medication use (NPMU) cohort (n = 288,562) in terms of age-group, race, and gender. Our natural language processing and machine learning methods for automated cohort characterization achieved 0.88 precision (95% CI:0.84 to 0.92) for age-group, 0.90 (95% CI: 0.85 to 0.95) for race, and 94% accuracy (95% CI: 92 to 97) for gender, when evaluated against manually annotated gold-standard data. We compared automatically derived statistics for NPMU of tranquilizers, stimulants, and opioids from Twitter with statistics reported in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and the National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS). Distributions automatically estimated from Twitter were mostly consistent with the NSDUH [Spearman r: race: 0.98 (P < 0.005); age-group: 0.67 (P < 0.005); gender: 0.66 (P = 0.27)] and NEDS, with 34/65 (52.3%) of the Twitter-based estimates lying within 95% CIs of estimates from the traditional sources. Explainable differences (e.g., overrepresentation of younger people) were found for age-group-related statistics. Our study demonstrates that accurate subpopulation-specific estimates about SU, particularly NPMU, may be automatically derived from Twitter to obtain earlier insights about targeted subpopulations compared to traditional surveillance approaches.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and other pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) sense microbial ligands and initiate signaling to induce inflammatory responses. Although the quality of inflammatory responses is influenced by internalization of TLRs, the role of endosomal maturation in clearing receptors and terminating inflammatory responses is not well understood. Here, we report that Drosophila and mammalian Vps33B proteins play critical roles in the maturation of phagosomes and endosomes following microbial recognition. Vps33B was necessary for clearance of endosomes containing internalized PRRs, failure of which resulted in enhanced signaling and expression of inflammatory mediators. Lack of Vps33B had no effect on trafficking of endosomes containing non-microbial cargo. These findings indicate that Vps33B function is critical for determining the fate of signaling endosomes formed following PRR activation. Exaggerated inflammatory responses dictated by persistence of receptors in aberrant endosomal compartments could therefore contribute to symptoms of ARC syndrome, a disease linked to loss of Vps33B.

Superconductivity can occur under conditions approaching broken-symmetry parent states1. In bilayer graphene, the twisting of one layer with respect to the other at 'magic' twist angles of around 1 degree leads to the emergence of ultra-flat moiré superlattice minibands. Such bands are a rich and highly tunable source of strong-correlation physics2-5, notably superconductivity, which emerges close to interaction-induced insulating states6,7. Here we report the fabrication of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene devices with highly uniform twist angles. The reduction in twist-angle disorder reveals the presence of insulating states at all integer occupancies of the fourfold spin-valley degenerate flat conduction and valence bands-that is, at moiré band filling factors ν = 0, ±1, ±2, ±3. At ν ≈ -2, superconductivity is observed below critical temperatures of up to 3 kelvin. We also observe three new superconducting domes at much lower temperatures, close to the ν = 0 and ν = ±1 insulating states. Notably, at ν = ± 1 we find states with non-zero Chern numbers. For ν = -1 the insulating state exhibits a sharp hysteretic resistance enhancement when a perpendicular magnetic field greater than 3.6 tesla is applied, which is consistent with a field-driven phase transition. Our study shows that broken-symmetry states, interaction-driven insulators, orbital magnets, states with non-zero Chern numbers and superconducting domes occur frequently across a wide range of moiré flat band fillings, including close to charge neutrality. This study provides a more detailed view of the phenomenology of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, adding to our evolving understanding of its emergent properties.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease driven by dysbiosis in subgingival microbial communities leading to increased abundance of a limited number of pathobionts, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola. Oral health, particularly periodontitis, is a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis, with components of both these bacteria identified in postmortem brains of persons with AD. Repeated oral inoculation of mice with P. gingivalis results in brain infiltration of bacterial products, increased inflammation, and induction of AD-like biomarkers. P. gingivalis displays synergistic virulence with T. denticola during periodontitis. The aim of the current study was to determine the ability of P. gingivalis and T. denticola, grown in physiologically relevant conditions, individually and in combination, to induce AD-like pathology following chronic oral inoculation of female mice over 12 weeks. P. gingivalis alone significantly increased all 7 brain pathologies examined: neuronal damage, activation of astrocytes and microglia, expression of inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin 6 and production of amyloid-ß plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau, in the hippocampus, cortex and midbrain, compared to control mice. T. denticola alone significantly increased neuronal damage, activation of astrocytes and microglia, and expression of IL-1ß, in the hippocampus, cortex and midbrain, compared to control mice. Coinoculation of P. gingivalis with T. denticola significantly increased activation of astrocytes and microglia in the hippocampus, cortex and midbrain, and increased production of hyperphosphorylated tau and IL-1ß in the hippocampus only. The host brain response elicited by oral coinoculation was less than that elicited by each bacterium, suggesting coinoculation was less pathogenic.

BACKGROUND: The poor prognosis of breast cancer in Sudan could be due to delayed treatment and diagnosis at an advanced stage. Our study aimed to assess the extent of delays from onset of symptoms to treatment in Sudanese women with breast cancer, as well as identify factors contributing to these delays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a multi-center cross sectional study between March and April 2023. Data were collected from the medical records and interviews with women with breast cancer in the two main oncology centers in Sudan. Linear regression was used to identify the predictors of delayed presentation. RESULTS: We interviewed 601 women with breast cancer. The majority of women (50.1%) were diagnosed at locally advanced or metastatic disease. The median interval from the onset of symptoms to receiving oncologic treatment was 221 days (IQR = 92, 496). The longest delay was the presentation delay 61 (31 244) days. The median duration for diagnosis delay and treatment delay was 21 (10.57) days and 27 (10.64) days, respectively. Predictors of early presentation included, being young (ß = -5.3; 95% CI = 0.06 to 10), married (ß = -264; 95% CI = -427 to -101), divorced (ß = -306; 95% CI = -549 to -63), or widowed (ß = -320; 95% CI = --543 to -97), urban residence (ß = -107; 95% CI = -213 to -2.3), and seeking traditional healer (ß = -204; 95% CI = -383 to -26). CONCLUSION: Most Sudanese women with breast cancer experience significant patient delays, often presenting at advanced stages. Factors like being single, older, and living in rural areas contribute to these delays. Increasing breast cancer education, improving healthcare access and addressing sociodemographic barriers can potentially expedite diagnosis and improve outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Excess abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with metabolic diseases and poor survival in colon cancer (CC). We assessed the impact of different types of CC surgery on changes in abdominal fat depots. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomography (CT)-scans performed preoperative and 3 years after CC surgery were analyzed at L3-level for VAT, subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and total adipose tissue (TAT) areas. We assessed changes in VAT, SAT, TAT and VAT/SAT ratio after 3 years and compared the changes between patients who had undergone left-sided and right-sided colonic resection in the total population and in men and women separately. RESULTS: A total of 134 patients with stage I-III CC undergoing cancer surgery were included. Patients who had undergone left-sided colonic resection had after 3 years follow-up a 5% (95% CI: 2-9%, p < 0.01) increase in abdominal VAT, a 4% (95% CI: 2-6%, p < 0.001) increase in SAT and a 5% increase (95% CI: 2-7%, p < 0.01) in TAT. Patients who had undergone right-sided colonic resection had no change in VAT, but a 6% (95% CI: 4-9%, p < 0.001) increase in SAT and a 4% (95% CI: 1-7%, p < 0.01) increase in TAT after 3 years. Stratified by sex, only males undergoing left-sided colonic resection had a significant VAT increase of 6% (95% CI: 2-10%, p < 0.01) after 3 years. CONCLUSION: After 3 years follow-up survivors of CC accumulated abdominal adipose tissue. Notably, those who underwent left-sided colonic resection had increased VAT and SAT, whereas those who underwent right-sided colonic resection demonstrated solely increased SAT.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementia caused by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aß) peptides. The extracellular deposition of Aß peptides in human AD brain causes neuronal death. Therefore, it has been found that Aß peptide degradation is a possible therapeutic target for AD. CathD has been known to breakdown amyloid beta peptides. However, the structural role of CathD is not yet clear. Hence, for the purpose of gaining a deeper comprehension of the structure of CathD, the present computational investigation was performed using virtual screening technique to predict CathD's active site residues and substrate binding mode. Ligand-based virtual screening was implemented on small molecules from ZINC database against crystal structure of CathD. Further, molecular docking was utilised to investigate the binding mechanism of CathD with substrates and virtually screened inhibitors. Localised compounds obtained through screening performed by PyRx and AutoDock 4.2 with CathD receptor and the compounds having highest binding affinities were picked as; ZINC00601317, ZINC04214975 and ZINCC12500925 as our top choices. The hydrophobic residues Viz. Gly35, Val31, Thr34, Gly128, Ile124 and Ala13 help stabilising the CathD-ligand complexes, which in turn emphasises substrate and inhibitor selectivity. Further, MM-GBSA approach has been used to calculate binding free energy between CathD and selected compounds. Therefore, it would be beneficial to understand the active site pocket of CathD with the assistance of these discoveries. Thus, the present study would be helpful to identify active site pocket of CathD, which could be beneficial to develop novel therapeutic strategies for the AD.

This study explored the development of novel biomimetic tannic acid-based hybrid nanocarriers (HNs) for targeted delivery of ciprofloxacin (CIP-loaded TAH-NPs) against bacterial-induced sepsis. The prepared CIP-loaded TAH-NPs exhibited appropriate physicochemical characteristics and demonstrated biocompatibility and nonhemolytic properties. Computational simulations and microscale thermophoresis studies validated the strong binding affinity of tannic acid (TA) and its nanoformulation to human Toll-like receptor 4, surpassing that of the natural substrate lipopolysaccharide (LPS), suggesting a potential competitive inhibition against LPS-induced inflammatory responses. CIP released from TAH-NPs displayed a sustained release profile over 72 h. The in vitro antibacterial activity studies revealed that CIP-loaded TAH-NPs exhibited enhanced antibacterial efficacy and efflux pump inhibitory activity. Specifically, they showed a 3-fold increase in biofilm eradication activity against MRSA and a 2-fold increase against P. aeruginosa compared to bare CIP. Time-killing assays demonstrated complete bacterial clearance within 8 h of treatment with CIP-loaded TAH-NPs. In vitro DPPH scavenging and anti-inflammatory investigations confirmed the ability of the prepared hybrid nanosystem to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modulate LPS-induced inflammatory responses. Collectively, these results suggest that CIP-loaded TAH-NPs may serve as an innovative nanocarrier for the effective and targeted delivery of antibiotics against bacterial-induced sepsis.

Perovskites composed of inorganic cesium (Cs) halide provide a route to thermally resistant solar cells. Nevertheless, the use of hole-transporting layers (HTLs) with hydrophobic additives is constrained by moisture-induced phase deterioration. Due to significant electrical loss, dopant-free HTLs are unable to produce practical solar cells. In this article, we designed a two-dimensional 1,3,6,8-tetrakis[5-(N,N-di(p-(methylthio)phenyl)amino-p-phenyl)-thiophen-2-yl]pyrene (termed SMe-TATPyr) molecule as a new HTL to regulate electrical loss in lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We optimized the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs based on mixed tin (Sn)/germanium (Ge) halide perovskite (CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3) by exploring different factors, such as the deep and shallow levels of defects, density of states at the valence band (NV), thickness of the perovskite film, p-type doping concentration (NA) of HTL, the series and shunt resistances, and so on. We carried out comparative research by employing the 1D-SCAPS (a solar cell capacitance simulator) analysis tool. Through optimization of the PSC, we obtained the highest parameters in the simulated solar cell structure of fluorine tin oxide (FTO)/titanium dioxide (TiO2)/CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3/SMe-TATPyr/gold (Au), and the PCE reached up to 20% with a fill factor (FF) of 81.89%.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus is a major predictor for severity and mortality that is increased by 50% in COVID-19 infection. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of new-onset DM among patients with COVID-19 and examined the short clinical outcomes of the disease. METHOD: This is a retrospective study of revising electronic medical records to assess the prevalence of new-onset DM in COVID-19 patients and its impact on the severity of the disease. Adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 during the period from June 2020 to December 2021 were enrolled. RESULTS: 725 patients were included. 53.8% of them were males and 46.2 were females, the mean age was 43.35 ± 16.76. 13.2% were diabetics; 2.2% with preexisting DM and 11.0% had new-onset DM. 6.34% had coexisting medical conditions. DKA at presentation was observed in 6 patients (0.8%) of newly diagnosed DM. There is a significant correlation between age and family history (FH), and BMI and new-onset DM (P < 0.05). The overall mortality rate was 2.2%, and it was significantly higher in diabetics in comparison to non-diabetics (P < 0.001). 8.6% had persistent hyperglycemia after 4 months of follow-up. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of COVID-19 related new-onset DM was correlated significantly with disease severity and mortality rate. Age, FH, and BMI, were the major predictors. We recommend that frequent monitoring of blood glucose for patients with COVID-19 infections to detect DM, therefore, prompt treatment can be initiated.

Background: Sepsis-associated liver injury (SALI) occurs in about a third of septic patients, and it is often a poor prognostic factor. However, there are few studies on early SALI and its impact on the clinical course of sepsis. Here we explored the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and prognosis of early SALI. Methods: Two hundred and one patients with confirmed sepsis were divided into those with and without early SALI (on admission) based on liver function. The clinical characteristics and prognosis were compared between groups and associated factors identified by multivariable regression analysis. Results: Sepsis-related liver injury was present in 18.9% of septic patients on admission. High aspartate transaminase (AST), high direct bilirubin, and low plasma thromboplastin antecedent (PTA, factor XI) were risk factors for sepsis with SALI: the area under the AST curve was 0.825, corresponding to a sensitivity of 0.67 and a specificity of 0.93 (cutoff 91.6 U/L), the area under the direct bilirubin curve was 0.86, corresponding to a sensitivity of 0.83 and a specificity of 0.71 (cutoff 8.35 µmol/L), and the area under the PTA curve was 0.678, corresponding to a sensitivity of 0.47 and a specificity of 0.93 (cutoff 54.0). Conclusion: Septic patients with early SALI have early-onset coagulation disorders that must be recognized to instigate early intervention and halt sepsis progression. Elevated AST, PTA, and direct bilirubin may be independent risk markers of sepsis-related liver injury, and extra clinical vigilance is required when these factors are noted in patients with sepsis.

We cover the applications of nanomaterials to curtail the pollution induced by fossil fuel combustion, and textile dye effluents. Toxic emissions released from automobile exhaust that comprise of NOX. SOX and PAHs compile to harsh breathing and respiratory troubles. The effluents generated from the mammoth textile and leather industry is potential threat to beget massive health issues to human life, and environmental problem. Part I projects the broad envisage on role of nano materials in production of alternative biofuels. In addition, green sources for synthesizing nanomaterials are given special importance. Nano catalyst's utilization in bio-derived fuels such as biogas, bio-oil, bioethanol, and biodiesel are catered to this article. Part II cover the current statistics of textile effluent pollution level in India and its steps in confronting the risks of pollution are discussed. A clear picture of the nano techniques in pre-treatment, and the recent nano related trends pursued in industries to eliminate the dyes and chemicals from the discharges is discussed. The substantial aspect of nano catalysis in achieving emission-free fuel and toxic-free effluents and the augmentation in this field is conferred. This review portrays the dependency on nano materials & technology for sustainable future.

In this study, we studied the hydrocracking of waste chicken oil (WCO) catalyzed by mesoporous SO42-/KIT-6. The study included WCO extraction, SO42-/KIT-6 catalyst synthesis, hydrocracking, and catalytic characterization. XRD patterns revealed intense peaks in the low-angle region, with shoulder peaks showing an increase in sulphate loading from 10% to 30%. The BET-specific surface area for the pure KIT-6 supports measured at 1003 m2/g, indicative of a well-defined mesoporous structure. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed a two-stage weight loss, attributed to the elimination of hydrated water (about 200 °C) and decomposition of sulphate ions (400-450 °C). SEM analysis highlighted the surface morphology of the active SK-2 catalyst. Hydrocatalytic and catalytic cracking reactions were performed, and about 99.8% conversion was achieved with 20 mL/H H2 flow, whereas higher production of bioliquids was observed at a flow of 15 mL/h. The hydrocracking mechanism was also studied to understand the formation of lower hydrocarbons. GC analyses of simulated distilled gasoline, kerosene, and diesel showed diverse hydrocarbon compositions. For engine testing, non-hydrocracked fuel rose to 28 kW at 3000 rpm and declined to 21 kW at 3500 rpm. Emission analysis revealed decreasing trends in NOX emissions of hydrogen-rich blends, with values of 65 ppm, 54 ppm, and 48 ppm for petrol, NHBL, and HBL, respectively. Similarly, SO2 emissions reduced from petrol to NHBL and HBL at 910 ppm, 800 ppm, and 600 ppm, respectively, suggesting reduced environmental impact. CO emissions exhibited a substantial reduction in NHBL (0.90%) and HBL (0.54%) compared to petrol (2.70%), emphasizing the cleaner combustion characteristics. Our results provide a comprehensive exploration of waste chicken oil hydrocracking, emphasizing catalyst synthesis, fuel characterization, engine performance, and environmental impact, thereby contributing valuable insights to the field of sustainable bioenergy.

BACKGROUND: HPVs are considered to have high-oncogenic risk. These genotypes have been proven to have a causal link to cancers, in pediatric and youth patients, with high rates of HPV presence in the tonsillar tissues. OBJECTIVE: A prospective case-control research for determining HPV 6/11 genotypes in tonsillar specimens of children who underwent operations in the otolaryngology departments of the Medical City Complex, Baghdad, Iraq, for their non-oncologic palatine and pharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophies. METHODS: This study enrolled 102 tonsillar tissues, 82 from pediatric patients aged from 4 to 12 years and who underwent tonsillectomies for non-oncologic palatine and pharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophies; 38 specimens were from single operations while 22 were multiple specimens from the same pediatric patients, represented as a total of 44 tissues). In addition, trimmed nasal tissues from 20 patients, with unremarkable pathological changes, were included as the control group. For HPV 6/11 DNA detection, specific DNA probes were used for the chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) technique. RESULTS: In the palatine tonsillar hypertrophied tissue group, 26.2% of the tissues revealed positive CISH signals for HPV 6/11 DNA. Regarding the pharyngeal tonsillar hypertrophied tissues, 22.5% of the specimens expressed positive CISH reactions. Among the 22 pediatric patients who had combined pharyngeal and palatine tonsillectomies, in 22.7% both sites expressed positive signals. No positive-CISH reactions were documented in the control nasal tissues. Statistically a significant difference was seen when compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Significant rates of HPV were observed which pointed to the spread of HPV, among other STIs, and in mothers of at least this studied pediatric group. Also, this represented a critical mark as reservoir tissue sites, allowing transmission to other mucosal tissue localizations, playing part in their pathogenesis.

The human monkeypox virus (Mpox) is classified as a member of the Poxviridae family and belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus. Mpox possesses double-stranded DNA, and there are two known genetic clades: those originating in West Africa and the Congo Basin, commonly known as Central African clades. Mpox may be treated with either the vaccinia vaccination or the therapeutics. Modifying the smallpox vaccine for treating and preventing Mpox has shown to be beneficial because of the strong link between smallpox and Mpox viruses and their categorization in the same family. Cross-protection against Mpox is effective with two Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved smallpox vaccines (ACAM2000 and JYNNEOSTM). However, ACAM2000 has the potential for significant adverse effects, such as cardiac issues, whereas JYNNEOS has a lower risk profile. Moreover, Mpox has managed to resurface, although with modified characteristics, due to the discontinuation and cessation of the smallpox vaccine for 40 years. The safety and efficacy of the two leading mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and its many variants have been shown in clinical trials and subsequent data analysis. This first mRNA treatment model involves injecting patients with messenger RNA to produce target proteins and elicit an immunological response. High potency, the possibility of safe administration, low-cost manufacture, and quick development is just a few of the benefits of RNA-based vaccines that pave the way for a viable alternative to conventional vaccines. When protecting against Mpox infection, mRNA vaccines are pretty efficient and may one day replace the present whole-virus vaccines. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to provide a synopsis of the ongoing research, development, and testing of an mRNA vaccine against Mpox.

BACKGROUND: Usually, old age brings a poor quality of life due to illness and frailty. To prolong their lives and ensure their survival, all elderly patients with chronic diseases must adhere to their medications. In our study, we investigate medication adherence for elderly patients and its impact on the general health of the patient. METHODS: We implemented a cross-sectional survey-based study with four sections in April 2022 in Saudi Arabia. Data about the participants' demographic characteristics, the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale, Patient Activation Measure (PAM) 13, and EQ-5D-5 L. RESULTS: A total of 421 patients participated in this study, their mean age was 60.4 years, and most of them were males. Most of our population is living independently 87.9%. The vast majority of people have a low adherence record in the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (8-MMAS) classes (score = < 6). Moreover, the average PAM13 score is 51.93 (Level2) indicating a low level of confidence and sufficient knowledge to take action. Our analysis showed a significant correlation between socioeconomic status and medication adherence. Also, there was an association between housing status and medication adherence. On the other hand, we found no correlation between medication adherence and quality of life (QOL) by EQ-5D-5 L. CONCLUSION: Medication adherence is directly affected by living arrangements, as patients who live with a caretaker who can remind them to take their medications at the appropriate times have better medication adherence than those who live alone. Medication adherence was also significantly influenced by socioeconomic status, perhaps as a result of psychological effects and the belief of the lower-salaried population that they would be unable to afford the additional money required to cure any comorbidities that arose as a result of the disease. On the other hand, we did not find any correlation between medication adherence and quality of life. Finally, awareness of the necessity of adherence to medication for the elderly is essential.

BACKGROUND: Waterpipe tobacco smoking has increased tremendously at a global level among all age groups, particularly young people. Previous studies have examined the impact of waterpipe tobacco pictorial health warnings on adults but scarce studies were done on adolescents. The aim of this study was to assess the association of textual versus pictorial warnings on tumbac boxes and the motivation to quit waterpipe smoking among adolescents located in two Eastern Mediterranean countries Lebanon and Iraq. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between May and November 2022, involving 294 adolescents waterpipe smokers from Lebanon and Iraq. The questionnaire included the Lebanese Waterpipe Dependence Smoking-11, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, the Waterpipe Harm Perception Scale, Waterpipe Knowledge Scale, Waterpipe Attitude Scale, the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence, and the Motivation to Stop Scale. RESULTS: When adjusting the results over confounding variables, the results showed that compared to finding the warnings to stop smoking not efficacious at all, adolescents who find the warnings moderately (aOR = 2.83) and very (aOR = 6.64) efficacious had higher motivation to quit. Compared to finding the warnings not increasing their curiosity for information about how to stop waterpipe smoking at all, participants who confessed that warnings increased their curiosity a little (aOR = 2.59), moderately (aOR = 3.34) and very (aOR = 3.58) had higher motivation to quit. Compared to not considering changing the tumbac brand if the company uses pictorial warnings, adolescents who would consider changing the tumbac brand (aOR = 2.15) had higher motivation to quit. CONCLUSION: Pictorial and textual warnings on waterpipe packs were associated with higher motivation to stop waterpipe smoking. Public health education programs for this purpose seem warranted.

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system has an indispensable function in the uteroplacental circulation, placental growth, and blood pressure optimization. The angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) gene is a critical integrator for electrolyte balance, and water retention, along with inhibiting preeclampsia. The main goal of this pertaining study is to assess the contribution of ACE*(Ins/Del) variant with the susceptibility for preeclampsia with focus on the severity of the disease among gestational hypertensive women. This retrospective study included 225 participants [125 PE gestational women, and 100 normotensive healthy controls] matching with age, and geographical region. PE women classified into 82 early-onset PE women, accompanied with 43 late-onset PE women. Additionally, PE women categorized into 59 mild PE women, together with 66 severe PE women. The genotyping and characterization of ACE*(Ins/Del) variant were applied using the PCR technique. Our findings indicated higher frequency of the ACE*(Del/Del) genotype and ACE*(D allele) with elevated risk of preeclampsia compared to normotensive controls under recessive (OR = 2.09, and p-value = 0.007), and allelic (OR = 1.75, and p-value = 0.012) models. In addition, testing logistic regression revealed that the levels of endothelin-1 and malondialdehyde exposed significant difference for the ACE*(Del/Del) genotype among early-onset and late-onset PE women (p-value = 0.024, and 0.23, respectively). Furthermore, carriers of the ACE*(Del/Del) genotype observed statistically significant with lower sodium concentrations among severe PE women (p-value = 0.034). The ACE*(Del/Del) genotype and ACE*(D allele) were associated with increased risk preeclampsia among gestational women. Furthermore, early-onset PE and late-onset PE were correlated with endothelin-1 and malondialdehyde concentrations among Egyptian women.

The present study was designed to green synthesize titanium dioxide nanoparticles (G-TiO2 NPs) using Salacia reticulata leaf extract as a reducing and capping agent to assess antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects as well as toxicity evaluation in zebrafish. Besides, zebrafish embryos were employed to study the effect of G-TiO2 NPs on embryonic development. Zebrafish embryos were treated with TiO2 as well as G-TiO2 NPs at four different concentrations, i.e., 25, 50, 100, and 200 µg/ml for 24-96-hour post-fertilization (hpf). The SEM analysis of G-TiO2 NPs confirmed that the size was in the range of 32-46 nm and characterized by EDX, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR, UV-vis spectra. During 24-96-hour post-fertilization (hpf), the results showed that 25-100 µg/ml of TiO2 and G-TiO2 NP instigated developmental acute toxicity in these embryos, causing mortality, hatching delay, and malformation. TiO2 and G-TiO2 NPs exposure induced axis bent, tail bent, spinal cord curvature, yolk-sac, and pericardial edema. Exposure of larvae to the highest concentrations of 200 µg/ml TiO2 and G-TiO2 NPs caused maximum mortality at all time points and reached 70% and 50%, respectively, at 96 hpf. Besides, both TiO2 and G-TiO2 NP revealed antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. In addition, G-TiO2 NPs exhibited antibacterial effects. Taken together, this study provided a valuable insight into the synthesis of TiO2 NPs using green methods and the synthesized G-TiO2 NPs possess moderate toxicity and potent antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities.
