RESUMEN

Over the past several decades, non-technical competencies have been given an increasing amount of emphasis in veterinary medical training. However, additional research is needed to continue understanding the role that non-technical competencies play in veterinary success and wellness. An inter-related pair of non-technical competencies that needs further empirical investigation is communication and the influence of compassion on veterinarians. This research study investigated the relationship between compassion experiences and communication styles of fourth-year veterinarians-in-training using a canonical correlation analysis. The compassion fatigue resilience (CFR) model was the theoretical framework used to conceptualize how communication behaviors may contribute to compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction. Compassion experiences were measured using a version of the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) scale. Communication style was measured using the Communication Styles Inventory (CSI). Results indicated that communication style is statistically significantly related to compassion experiences (n = 281; Function 1, Rc = .552, p < .001; Function 2, Rc = .369, p < .001). Compassion fatigue was found to have a statistically significant association with the communication styles of emotionality (r = .467, p < .001), impression manipulativeness (r = .191, p = .001), and verbal aggressiveness (r = .239, p = .001). Results indicated support for veterinary training programs to continue adapting their curricula to include communication training and intervention programs to address communication and compassion fatigue, as well as to consider how the relationship between these two constructs may influence the wellness and success of veterinarians-in-training and veterinarians. More research is needed to understand the role of impression manipulativeness in veterinary wellness.

RESUMEN

Ample evidence exists in support of the influence of media, both traditional and electronic, on perceptions and engagement with alcohol marketing. We describe the development, calibration, and evidence for technical quality and utility for a new measure, the Alcohol Marketing Engagement Scale. Using two samples of college undergraduates (n1 = 199, n2 = 732), we collected field test responses to a total of 13 items. Initial support for scale validity is presented via correlations with attributes previously shown to be related to alcohol engagement. While the joint map of estimated scale locations of items and respondents indicates the need for further scale development, the results of the present analyses are promising. Implications for use in research are discussed.

RESUMEN

This study examines associations among organizational context, staff attributes, perceived importance, and use of best practices among staff in community-based, juvenile justice (JJ) agencies. As part of the National Institute on Drug Abuse's Juvenile Justice-Translational Research on Interventions for Adolescents in the Legal System (JJ-TRIALS) study, 492 staff from 36 JJ agencies were surveyed about the perceived importance and use of best practices within their organization in five substance use practice domains: screening, assessment, standard referral, active referral, and treatment support. Structural equation models indicated that supervisory encouragement and organizational innovation/flexibility were associated with greater individual adaptability. Adaptability (willingness to try new ideas, use new procedures, adjust quickly to change), was positively correlated with importance ratings. Importance ratings were positively associated with reported use of best practices. Organizational climates that support innovation likely affect use of practices through staff attributes and perceptions of the importance of such services.

RESUMEN

We used responses of two large samples of court-ordered participants from a statewide alcohol/driving safety program to investigate factor structure, score reliability, and criterion-related validity of the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, using both item-level and subscore-level data, support a one-factor structure for the SIP. Internal consistency score reliability estimates were consistent across samples and high enough to warrant use for making decisions about individuals. Item response theory model calibration of the scale, using a two-parameter logistic model, yielded consistent estimates of location and discrimination (slope) across samples. Estimated scale scores correlated moderately with an independent indicator of alcohol problems and poorly with an indicator of risky driving behavior, lending evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. We judge the SIP as adequately described by a single factor, that the joint person-item scale is coherent, and scores behave consistently across samples. (PsycINFO Database Record

RESUMEN

The present study assessed whether selected item characteristics--difficulty for the group, corrected item-total correlation, cognitive level, and difficulty for the examinee--relate to judgment of item difficulty. Undergraduate students in two classes (ns = 76, 43) identified what they believed were the five easiest and five most difficult items on a multiple-choice test. Statistically significant correlations were observed for difficulty for the group and the frequency that items were chosen as easy as well as with frequency of items chosen as difficult. Students performed significantly better on items they chose as easy than those chosen as difficult. Items chosen as easy more often called for simple, factual recall than did items chosen as difficult.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to conduct an exploratory factor analysis to provide support for the construct validity of the Positive Psychology Protective Profile, a self-report measure based on positive psychology. 985 undergraduates completed the profile, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the College Life Stress Inventory. Scores on the first two factor scores (Positive Outlook, Negative Symptoms) for the profile correlated significantly with scores on depression and stress, whereas scores on the third profile factor (Problem-solving) correlated significantly only with scores on the Beck Depression Inventory. Scores on the Positive Outlook significantly differentiated participants having either chronic illness or recent major illness from those who did not.

RESUMEN

Adolescent girls incarcerated in a state reformatory (N = 246) were recruited and assigned to an 18-session health education program or a time-equivalent HIV prevention program. Cohorts were assigned to conditions using a randomized block design separated by a washout period to reduce contamination. Post intervention, girls in the HIV risk reduction program demonstrated the acquisition of risk-reduction behavioral skills and improved condom application skill. At a follow-up assessment approximately 9 months after release from the correctional facility, girls in both conditions reported fewer unprotected sexual intercourse occasions and less sex while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

RESUMEN

Exposure to multiple traumatic events and high rates of mental health problems are common among juvenile offenders. This study draws on Conservation of Resources (COR) stress theory to examine the impact of a specific trauma, Hurricane Katrina, relative to other adverse life events, on the mental health of female adolescent offenders in Mississippi. Teenage girls (N=258, 69% African American) were recruited from four juvenile detention centers and the state training school. Participants were interviewed about the occurrence and timing of adverse life events and hurricane-related experiences and completed a self-administered mental health assessment. Hierarchical linear regression models were used to identify predictors of anxiety and depression. Pre-hurricane family stressors, pre-hurricane traumatic events, hurricane-related property damage, and receipt of hurricane-related financial assistance significantly predicted symptoms of anxiety and depression. Findings support COR theory. Family stressors had the greatest influence on symptoms of anxiety and depression, highlighting the need for family based services that address the multiple, inter-related problems and challenges in the lives of female juvenile offenders.
