Most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and respiratory illness. Among extrapulmonary signs associated with COVID-19, dermatological manifestations have been increasingly reported from different geographical regions. The exact incidence or prevalence of COVID-19 associated skin manifestation remains largely unknown and the pathophysiological mechanisms are still unclear. In this article, we have attempted to give a comprehensive overview of what has been learned a year into the pandemic on the epidemiology, clinical and histopathological features, pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical management of COVID-19 associated cutaneous manifestations.

The systematic review aimed to report the prevalence of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) usage among medical students in Saudi Arabia. Electronic databases were searched for scientific research articles published from January 2010 until December 2020. The data search was performed in electronic search engines such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Medline, Embase, Cochrane, and Saudi Digital Library. A total of five research articles that qualified the eligibility criteria were analyzed for qualitative data. The sample size in the included studies ranged from 229 to 1007 participants. The prevalence of e-cigarette usage ranged from 10.6% to 27.7% among medical students in Saudi Arabia. Studies have also reported that the prevalence of e-cigarette usage is higher among the male population in comparison with the female population. The prevalence of e-cigarette usage among medical students in Saudi Arabia is high. Similar to tobacco smoking, e-cigarette usage is a major public health issue and concern among the younger population because they have potential benefits in some and are harmful to some and also it is still unclear whether they are effective for quitting smoking. Regulatory bodies must focus and initiate strict laws and policies to minimize the sales of these products to the younger population. Health promotion strategies need to be developed to reduce the usage of e-cigarettes.

La enfermedad por coronavirus de 2019 (COVID-19) es una situación sanitaria emergente causada por el "síndrome respiratorio agudo severo por coronavirus 2" (SARS-CoV-2). La pandemia por COVID-19 en curso, que surgió de la ciudad china de Wuhan en Diciembre de 2019, se ha propagado en 188 países, y ha infectado a más de 100 millones de personas a nivel mundial a lo largo de un año. Los síntomas más comunes de la COVID-19 incluyen fiebre y enfermedad respiratoria. Entre los signos extrapulmonares asociados a COVID-19 se han reportado cada vez más manifestaciones dermatológicas en las diferentes regiones geográficas. La incidencia o prevalencia exactas de las manifestaciones cutáneas asociadas a la COVID-19 son bastante desconocidas, y los mecanismos patofisiológicos siguen sin dilucidarse. En este artículo hemos tratado de aportar una visión general amplia de lo que hemos aprendido en un año de inmersión en la pandemia en cuanto a epidemiología y características clínicas e histopatológicas, mecanismos patofisiológicos y manejo clínico de las manifestaciones cutáneas asociadas a la COVID-19.

AIMS: Glycyrrhiza glabra is a high-value medicinal plant thriving in biodiversity rich Kashmir Himalaya. The present study was designed to explore the fungal endophytes from G. glabra as a source of bioactive molecules. METHODS AND RESULTS: The extracts prepared from the isolated endophytes were evaluated for anti-microbial activities using broth micro-dilution assay. The endophytic strain coded as A2 exhibiting promising anti-bacterial as well as anti-tuberculosis activity was identified as Fusarium solani by ITS-5.8S ribosomal gene sequencing technique. This strain was subjected to large-scale fermentation followed by isolation of its bioactive compounds using column chromatography. From the results of spectral data analysis and comparison with literature, the molecules were identified as 3,6,9-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-4,4-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-1H-benzo[g]isochromene-5,10-dione (1), fusarubin (2), 3-O-methylfusarubin (3) and javanicin (4). Compound 1 is reported for the first time from this strain. All the four compounds inhibited the growth of various tested bacterial strains with MIC values in the range of <1 to 256 µg ml-1 . Fusarubin showed good activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain H37Rv with MIC value of 8 µg ml-1 , whereas compounds 1, 3 and 4 exhibited moderate activity with MIC values of 256, 64, 32 µg ml-1 , respectively. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reports significant anti-tuberculosis potential of bioactive molecules from endophytic F. solani evaluated against the virulent strain of M. tuberculosis. This study sets background towards their synthetic intervention for activity enhancement experiments in anti-microbial drug discovery programme. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Due to the chemoprofile variation of same endophyte with respect to source plant and ecoregions, further studies are required to explore endophytes of medicinal plants of all unusual biodiversity rich ecoregions for important and or novel bioactive molecules.

OBJECTIVES: The diazabicyclooctane ß-lactamase inhibitor OP0595 (RG6080) also acts as an antibiotic, targeting PBP2 in Enterobacteriaceae, but this activity is vulnerable to mutational resistance. We used WGS to investigate the basis of this resistance. METHODS: Twenty OP0595-selected mutants, comprising four derived from each of five different Escherichia coli strains, were sequenced on Illumina HiSeq. Reads from each mutant were mapped to the assembled genome of the corresponding parent. A variant-calling file generated with Samtools was parsed to determine genetic alterations. RESULTS: Besides OP0595, the mutants consistently showed decreased susceptibility to mecillinam, which likewise targets PBP2, and grew as stable round forms in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of OP0595. Among the 20 mutants, 18 had alterations in genes encoding tRNA synthase and modification functions liable to induce expression of the RpoS sigma factor through activation of the stringent response or had mutations suppressing inactivators of RpoS or the stringent response signal-degrading enzyme, SpoT. TolB was inactivated in one mutant: this activates RcsBC regulation and was previously associated with mecillinam resistance. The mechanism of resistance remained unidentified in one mutant. Both the RpoS and RcsBC systems regulate genes of cell division, including ftsAQZ that can compensate for loss or inhibition of PBP2, allowing survival of the challenged bacteria as stable round forms, as seen. CONCLUSIONS: WGS identified the global stringent response signal, entailing induction of RpoS, as the main mediator of mutational resistance to OP0595 in E. coli.

Insulin is known to regulate blood—glucose level and promote its utilization as an energy source in cardiac tissues under normal physiological conditions as well as stimulates signaling pathways that involved cell growth and proliferation. Although recently insulin generated free radicals via NAD(P)H has been documented but the molecular mechanism is still under investigation. The aim of present study is to elucidate the reactive oxygen species (ROS) dependent possible role of insulin in cardiac abnormalities, including hypertrophy by regulation of antioxidants enzyme (SOD) activity. In the current study, 60 cardiac patients and 50 healthy individuals as well as the rat model with insulin administration were under investigation. Oxidant, anti—oxidant biochemical assays, hypertrophic marker expression via immunobloting and histopathology were performed. We observed statistically significant elevation of the reactive oxygen species level in the serum of patients as well as in the insulin administrated rat model, a mild expression of cardiac marker in experimental models along with abnormal histopathology of hearts. However, super oxide dismutase free radical scavenger activity was down regulated upon insulin treatment compared to control rats. Conclusively, the present study showed that over expression of insulin might stimulate cardiac hypertrophic signal via up regulation of free radicals and down regulation of antioxidants enzymes including SOD activity.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is one of the most profitable and popular cereal crops in Pakistan. In July 2012, symptoms consisting of circular, black, necrotic spots, 2 to 4 mm in diameter, were observed on leaves of a commonly grown rice cultivar, Basmati-198, in private rice fields at Lahore (Punjab). This disease was observed later on rice cultivar KSK-133 grown at Faisalabad (Punjab) during the same cropping season. Disease incidence was ~35% and 25% for Basmati-198 and KSK-133, respectively. To our knowledge, the pathogen was confined only in these areas and cultivars and was not present on other rice varieties or crops. Ten infected plants were selected randomly from each field of two rice cultivars and one infected leaf for each of the 10 infected plants was selected for the isolation of fungal pathogen. Necrotic lesions were cut into pieces of ~2 mm2, surface-disinfected with 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, placed on 2% malt extract agar (MEA) (Sigma, Dorset, UK), and incubated at 25 ± 2°C for 4 to 5 days. Emerging fungal colonies were transferred aseptically to fresh MEA petri plates for purification. Alternaria spp. were consistently recovered from infected leaves. Three isolates per variety were selected for detailed morphological studies. Each isolate was grown at 25°C on MEA and potato carrot agar (PCA) for 7 days. All isolates displayed similar morphological features including black radiate, floccose colonies with irregular margins, 6 to 7 cm in diameter on MEA and 2 to 3 cm with 1 to 2 pairs of concentric growth rings on PCA. Conidial chains were not crowded with 1 to 10 conidia per branch and bearing several lateral branches. Conidiophores were tapering and narrow, 40 to 200 × 2 µm. Conidia were ovoid within a size range of 10 to 30 × 5 to 14 µm, with 1 to 5 transverse and 1 longitudinal septum. Conidial color darkens from a dull tan to a medium brown as the culture matures. Based on morphology, the pathogen was identified as Alternaria arborescens (1). A pure culture of the pathogen was deposited in First Fungal Culture Bank of Pakistan (FCBP) with accession FCBP1351. Identification based on morphology was verified by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. For this, a DNA fragment of ~650 bp was amplified using total genomic DNA as template and ITS1 and ITS4 primers (2). The nucleotide sequence of the ITS region was submitted to GenBank under accession KF679683. Comparison of the sequence with those in GenBank revealed that the sequence was 99% identical with A. arborescens, isolate ALT-242 (KC415808), causing Eucalyptus leaf spot in India and strain STE-U4345 (AF404667), a causal pathogen of apple core rot in South Africa. Pathogenicity testing was performed on both cultivars. One-month-old plants grown in greenhouse were sprayed with 10 ml of spore suspension (2 × 105 spores/ml) as well as 10 ml of this spore suspension in soil at the time of sowing. Control plants were sprayed with sterilized water. The plants were covered with plastic bags for 48 h and kept under observation for 2 weeks in a glasshouse at 30 ± 2°C. Lesions appeared on leaves after 10 days of inoculation whereas control plants remained healthy. Pathogenicity tests were repeated in triplicate. Similar disease symptoms and re-isolation of A. arborescens fulfilled Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. arborescens leaf spot of rice in Pakistan. AIM: To compare the feasibility, accuracy, and effective radiation dose (ED) of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the detection of coronary artery disease using a combined ED-saving strategy including prospective electrocardiogram (ECG) triggering with a short x-ray window and a body mass index (BMI)-adapted imaging protocol using adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR; group 1), in comparison with a prospective ECG triggering strategy alone (group 2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seventy patients scheduled for invasive coronary angiography (ICA) were evaluated. Fourteen patients were not eligible for MDCT. The remaining 156 patients were randomized to group 1 (78 patients) and group 2 (78 patients). Eight and 11 patients in groups 1 and 2, respectively, were excluded after randomization because the patients' heart rates were >65 beats/min. MDCT images were assessed for feasibility, signal-to-noise ration (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), accuracy in detection of coronary stenoses >50% versus ICA and for ED. RESULTS: The feasibility, SNR, CNR, accuracy in a segment-based and patient-based model were similar in both groups (97 versus 95%, 14.5 ± 3.9 versus 14.2 ± 4.1, 16 ± 4.6 versus 16.5 ± 4.4, 95 versus 94% and 97 versus 99%, respectively). The ED in group 1 was 72% lower than in group 2 (2.1 ± 1.2 versus 7.5 ± 1.8 mSv, respectively; p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The use of a multi-parametric ED saving protocol results in a significant reduction in ED without a negative impact on accuracy.

The Australian Government is meeting the challenge of water scarcity and climate change through significant on-farm infrastructure investment to increase water use efficiency and productivity, and secure longer term water supplies. However, it is likely that on-farm infrastructure investment will alter energy consumption and therefore generate considerable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, suggesting potential conflicts in terms of mitigation and adaptation policies. In particular, the introduction of a price on carbon may influence the extent to which new irrigation technologies are adopted. This study evaluated trade-offs between water savings, GHG emissions and economic gain associated with the conversion of a sprinkler (hand shift) irrigation system to a drip (trickle) irrigation system for a lettuce production system in the Lockyer Valley, one of the major vegetable producing regions in Australia. Surprisingly, instead of trade-offs, this study found positive synergies - a win-win situation. The conversion of the old hand-shift sprinkler irrigation system to a drip irrigation system resulted in significant water savings of almost 2 ML/ha, as well as an overall reduction in GHG emissions. Economic modelling, at a carbon price of $ 30/t CO(2)e, indicated that there was a net benefit of adoption of the drip irrigation system of about $ 4620/ML/year. We suggest priority should be given, in the implementation of on-farm infrastructure investment policy, to replacing older inefficient and energy-intensive sprinkler irrigation systems such as hand shift and roll-line. The findings of the study support the use of an integrated approach to avoid possible conflicts in designing national climate change mitigation and adaptation policies, both of which are being developed in Australia.

Cotton mealybug is a highly invasive pest of agricultural crops worldwide. Major agriculturists most rely on the use of insecticides for the control of pesticides. So, the indiscriminate use of insecticides leads to resistance development in recent years. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted using different concentrations of the three insecticides (profenfos chlorpyrifos and triazophos) to check the hormoligosis effects against cotton mealybug (CMB) in laboratory conditions. Investigation of variations for % mortality of adults of CMB after three days revealed that all treatments had statistically significant (P ˂ 0.05). The highest mortality was observed at the highest concentrations of profenofos 2.4% (38.55%). After 7 days, all the treatments were significant with difference in means (P ˂ 0.05). The highest mortality was recorded at the highest dilution of pesticide profenofos 2.4% (77.11%). The values of fecundity and longevity exposed a valid difference among treatments (P ˂ 0.05). Maximum fecundity was observed at the concentration 2.4% (181.41%) and longevity showed (38.46%). The highest mortality was observed at a concentration of triazophos 4% (27.98%). For chlorpyriphos the highest mortality was examined at concentration 4% (24.79%). The fecundity showed a statistically significant difference for different concentrations of triazophos and chlorpyriphos (P ˂ 0.05). The results of the recent study provide valuable information regarding the selection of insecticides and hormoligosis effects. The study can be helpful in the implications of integrated pest management of P. solenopsis.

The majority of the birds in different habitats are stressed due to alteration in multiple climate factors contributing to their loss. The present study has been planned to find the roosts composition of passerine birds in different major and sub-habitats of Punjab, Pakistan. In Faisalabad, of the four species, the higher number of exits was almost comparable, while Passer domesticus and Pastor roseus were more abundant than Tachycinet bicolor and Lanius cristatus. For the three remaining birds, total exits and returns were 180 for P. roseus, 181 for T. bicolor, and 179 for L. cristatus, respectively. Considering the exits in morning hours, a total of 314, 256, 246 and 210, were recorded from Sheikhupura. In Khanewal, of the four species, the highest exits and returns were that of P. domesticus (407; 451), followed by that of the P. roseus (273; 336), T. bicolor (242; 319) and L. cristatus (220; 397). The temperature imposed serious effects on roost exits for the four birds. The varied P-values which were higher (< 0.001***, < 0.001***, 0.002 **, <0.001***) appeared to limit the roost exits for them. Nonetheless, the impact of relative humidity exerted a strong influence on the T. bicolor (0.003**). In roosts return, it was seen that roost returns were even likely in warm temperatures and precipitation did not impose seriously on returns, and even in light rainfall. Nonetheless, relative humidity (RH) strongly impacted the sparrow. The T. bicolor and L. cristatus were adversely affected with the slopes (1.37) and (2.06), indicated with each percentage increase of relative humidity, and slope variations became least.

Environmental contamination with heavy metals is a threat to the organisms due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation in food chains. The study was aimed to assess cadmium (Cd) effect on calcium (Ca) level in bones of a freshwater fish Channa gachua. 42 fish individuals were kept into six (6) aquaria; labelled aq.0, 1, 2, 3,4 and 5 in the laboratory for treatment. Aq.0 was control group and aq.1, 2,3,4,5 were experimental with treatment solution of Cd 0, 0.1ppm, 0.5ppm, 1ppm, 2.5ppm and 5ppm respectively for three months. After exposure, bones tissue were examined for Cd accumulation and Ca concentration. Highest accumulation of Cd were recorded in aq.5 mean 46.86 ± 0.46 mgkg-1 .and lowest in the control group with mean 0.61 ± 0.06 mgkg-1. The order of Cd bioaccumulation in bones were aq.5 > aq.4 >aq.3 > aq.2 > aq.1 > aq.0. Highest concentration of Ca were noted in aq.0 (Control group) mean 7888.06 ± 4827.22 mgkg-1 and lowest were 1132.36 ± 203.73 mgkg-1 in aq.5 (at 5.0 ppm). Generally a pattern of decreasing Ca level were observed with each rise of Cd bioaccumulation aq.0 > aq.1 > aq.2 > aq.3 > aq.4 > aq.5. Current study indicated that Cd accumulation have substantial effect on Ca level in bones and hence on skeleton system. Strict rules must be implemented by government to control metals pollution and exploitations of biota.

A 95-day feeding study was carried out to evaluate the impact of complete replacement of fish oil by plant oils in the growth performance, feed consumption fatty acid and body composition of juvenile rabbitfish, Siganus rivulatus. There were four treatments i.e., A (fish oil diet), (linseed oil diet), C (soybean meal oil diet) and D (sunflower oil diet). The experimental trial was conducted in twelve 1.5-m3 fiber glass tanks (n=3). Spinefoot rabbitfish juveniles had an average initial weight of 0.948 g ± 0.124 g and they were stocked at 50 fish per tank. Fish fed diet A showed significantly better growth rate, final body weight, and total body weight than fish fed on the other diets. Moreover, the best FCR was observed for diet A followed by diet C and diets B and D had the worst FCR. Fish body composition for crude protein, dry matter, ashes and gross energy at the end of the trial had not differed between the treatments. The highest polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was found in fish fed diet A followed in decreasing order by diets D, B, and C. Fish oil is a better dietary lipid source for Spinefoot rabbitfish juveniles, Siganus rivulatus, than plant oils. Among plant oils, soybean oil was better than linseed oil and sunflower oil as the main dietary fat source.

The present study examines the correlations between fifteen morphometric and ten meristic characters and total length (TL) of males, females, and combined sexes of Alepes vari (Cuvier, 1833) collected from Karachi fish harbor, West Wharf of Karachi Coast. Statistical analyses of linear regression relationships show mostly strong correlations (r≥0.70; p<0.05) between total length (TL) and most morphometric characters in males, females, and combined sexes, except the height of pectoral-fin (PFH), and pelvic-fin base length (PelFL); whereas, meristic characters were found to be constant and indicate weak or negative type correlations (r≤0.50; p>0.05) with total length (TL). Hence, according to our present results, there is a direct relationship between the total length of fish and all morphometric characters, which were found to be the best indicators of positive allometric pattern growth in fish. Moreover, analysis of the 2-sample t-test revealed (t-test; p>0.05) that no sexual dimorphism was reported in Alepes vari. Thus, our present study could be valuable in systematic classification, sexual dimorphism, and management of this species on the Karachi coast.

Salinity is one of the most critical environmental parameters regarding fish physiology, modifying food intake and growth performance in many fish species. The present study has investigated the effects of different salinity levels on growth performance, feeding and survival of Asian seabass Lates calcarifer juveniles. Asian seabass juveniles were reared at 0 (T1), 5 (T2), 22 (T3), 36 (T4), and 42 (T5) ppt salinity. Approximately eight hundred thirty fish individuals with an average weight of 1.24±0.52 g were randomly distributed (166 fish/Tank) in 5 concrete tanks (each tank 30×6×4 ft, volume 19,122 L) for forty days. Juveniles were initially fed 42% crude protein-containing diets at a rate of 6% of their body weight per day. The results showed that salinity level had a significant effect on the weight gain (WG), average daily weight gain (ADWG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), total biomass and health indices (p<0.05). The highest WG (39.11±1.49 g), ADWG (1.00±0.12 g), SGR (8.74±0.03% d-1) and lowest FCR (0.96±0.20) were observed with T3 treatment, which was significantly higher compared to other treatment groups (p<0.05). Among the health indices, the highest hepatosomatic index and viscerosomatic index were found with T3 treatment, significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05). No significant differences were found among the treatments in terms of survival rate (p>0.05), but the maximum survival rate (98.89±0.0%) was observed in the T3 and T2 treatments. The maximum level of crude proteins (19.99±1.4%) was found in the whole-body biochemical composition of Asian seabass juveniles in the T3 treatment group. The second-order polynomial regression showed that 20 ppt salinity is optimum for the best growth of Asian seabass. Thus, the present study recommends 20 to 36 ppt salinity for the commercial farming of Asian seabass under a closed aquaculture system.

BACKGROUND: the emergence of carbapenemases in Enterobacteriaceae is driving a search for therapeutic alternatives. We tested ACHN-490, a sisomicin derivative that evades all plasmid-mediated aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, against 82 carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates. Comparators included internationally and locally available aminoglycosides. Methods The isolates variously had KPC (n = 12), SME-1 (n = 1), IMP (n = 13), VIM (n = 5), NDM (n = 17) or OXA-48 (n = 19) carbapenemases, or had combinations of impermeability with AmpC (n = 5) or extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (n = 10). They included 53 Klebsiella spp., 19 Enterobacter spp., 6 Escherichia coli and 4 others; most were multiresistant. Genes were identified by PCR and sequencing; MICs were measured by CLSI agar dilution. RESULTS: ACHN-490 was active at ≤ 2 mg/L against all 65 isolates with carbapenem resistance mechanisms other than NDM enzyme, mostly with MICs of 0.12-0.5 mg/L; isepamicin was active against 63/65 at ≤ 8 mg/L. In contrast, 35% were resistant to gentamicin at 4 mg/L, 61% to tobramycin at 4 mg/L and 20% to amikacin at 16 mg/L. However, 16 of the 17 isolates with NDM-1 enzyme were resistant to ACHN-490, with MICs ≥ 64 mg/L, and these were cross-resistant to all other human-use aminoglycosides tested. Their behaviour was associated with ArmA and RmtC 16S rRNA methylases. Apramycin (a veterinary aminoglycoside) retained its full activity, with MICs of 4-8 mg/L versus strains with armA or rmtC, though resistance was seen in one Klebsiella pneumoniae with AAC(3)-IV (MIC ≥ 256 mg/L). CONCLUSIONS: ACHN-490 has potent activity versus carbapenem-resistant isolates, except those also harbouring 16S rRNA methylases; isepamicin is also widely active, though less potent than ACHN-490. Evasion of 16S rRNA methylases by apramycin is noteworthy and may provide a starting point for future aminoglycoside development.

BACKGROUND: The global accumulation of Escherichia coli with CTX-M extended-spectrum ß-lactamases partly reflects the dissemination of clonal lineages, notably ST131 and ST405. More recently, E. coli have emerged that produce NDM carbapenemase. We sought to determine the clonal diversity of E. coli with this enzyme from English hospitals, and to compare them with isolates from Pakistan and India. METHODS: The 18 NDM-positive E. coli were from hospitals in England (n = 10), Pakistan (n = 7) and India (n = 1). Isolates were compared by phylogenetic grouping, multilocus sequence typing and PFGE of XbaI-digested DNA. Isolates were screened by PCR for acquired AmpC genes, bla(CTX-M), and the 16S rRNA methylase genes armA and rmtC. RESULTS: Most of the isolates belonged to phylogenetic groups B1 (n = 9) or D (n = 7); two were group A and none was group B2. Nine isolates from England and Pakistan belonged to the B1 lineage ST101, with seven of these clustering at >77% similarity by PFGE. Other lineages included ST405 (n = 3, group D), ST648 (n = 3, group D), the ST23 complex (one each of ST90 and ST410, both group A) and ST156 (n = 1, group D). Sixteen of 18 isolates had a group 1 CTX-M gene, 13 had a CIT-type acquired AmpC, and 16 had either or both of armA and rmtC. CONCLUSIONS: The E. coli isolates producing NDM-1 carbapenemase belonged to six sequence types and included diverse clonal lineages. Nevertheless, isolates of B1-ST101 accounted for half the collection, and included isolates from both England and Pakistan. None of the isolates belonged to ST131 or to phylogroup B2.

Optimum planting arrangement is an important attribute for efficient utilization of available resources and to obtain high yield of cotton. Application of plant growth promoter and retardant on cotton in improved planting density are the innovative techniques in the establishment of more productive cotton crop. Therefore, we planned a field study to assess the role of bio-stimulant and growth retardant in the resource utilization efficiency of cotton cultivars planted under variable row spacing at Agronomic Research Area Bahauddin Zakariya University and Usmania Agricultural Farm Shujabad during Kharif 2012. Experimental treatments consisted of cotton genotypes viz. CIM-573 and CIM-598, cultivated under conventional (75 cm), medium (50 cm) and ultra-narrow row spacing (25 cm) with foliar spray of bio-stimulant (moringa leaf extract) and growth retardant (mepiquate chloride), either sole or in combination, keeping distilled water as a control. Exogenously applied MLE alone and MLE + MC significantly enhanced the number of squares, flowers and green bolls per plant leading to higher cotton seed and lint yield of CIM 598 cultivar cultivated under conventional row spacing. While application of MC alone and MLE + MC produced maximum micronaire value, fiber strength and fiber uniformity ratio of CIM 573 cultivar cultivated under conventional row spacing. The results suggested that application of MLE is a possible approach to enhance the cotton productivity and the use of MC to enhance the fiber quality attributes under conventional row spacing.
