RESUMEN

Double fertilization in many flowering plants (angiosperms) often occurs during the hot summer season, but the mechanisms that enable angiosperms to adapt specifically to high temperatures are largely unknown. The actin cytoskeleton is essential for pollen germination and the polarized growth of pollen tubes, yet how this process responds to high temperatures remains unclear. Here, we reveal that the high thermal stability of 11 Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) actin-depolymerizing factors (ADFs) is significantly different: ADFs that specifically accumulate in tip-growing cells (pollen and root hairs) exhibit high thermal stability. Through ancestral protein reconstruction, we found that subclass II ADFs (expressed specifically in pollen) have undergone a dynamic wave-like evolution of the retention, loss, and regeneration of thermostable sites. Additionally, the sites of AtADF7 with high thermal stability are conserved in ADFs specific to angiosperm pollen. Moreover, the high thermal stability of ADFs is required to regulate actin dynamics and turnover at high temperatures to promote pollen germination. Collectively, these findings suggest strategies for the adaptation of sexual reproduction to high temperature in angiosperms at the cell biology level.

BACKGROUND: To summarize the clinical and genetic characteristics of patients with pyridox(am)ine-5'-phosphate oxidase (PNPO) deficiency. METHODS: Clinical and genetic data of the patients were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Eighteen patients from 17 families with variants in PNPO were collected, and 15 cases survived to date. The age of onset ranged from 1 day to 5 months (median age 6.5 days) and seven of them presented with seizures <24 h. About 7/18 (39%) of patients showed seizure-free with pyridoxine (PN) or pyridoxal-5'-phosphate treatment. Two patients showed surprised therapeutic responses to antiseizure medications therapy: one could be controlled for up to 1 year and 5 months, and the other showed seizure-free for >8 years. The neurodevelopment was normal in one patient, mild delay in four, in whom responded well to PN. Severe delay could be seen in the remaining 10 surviving patients. Genetic analysis revealed 14 variants of PNPO, seven of which were novel. Five pairs of unrelated patients were observed to carry the same variants, respectively, and had similar developmental status and onset age of seizures in some degree in each pair, whereas also had differences. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical characteristics, including age of onset, treatment response and prognosis, were variable and difficult to classify into different types clearly. Patients with PNPO deficiency who used PN as their main treatment and being able to control seizures seemed to be associated with better outcomes. Patients with the same genotype tended to show the correlation of phenotype-genotype.

Pollen tube guidance regulates the growth direction and ovule targeting of pollen tubes in pistils, which is crucial for the completion of sexual reproduction in flowering plants. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) pollen-specific receptor kinase (PRK) family members PRK3 and PRK6 are specifically tip-localized and essential for pollen tube growth and guidance. However, the mechanisms controlling the polar localization of PRKs at the pollen tube tip are unclear. The Arabidopsis P4-ATPase ALA3 helps establish the polar localization of apical phosphatidylserine (PS) in pollen tubes. Here, we discovered that loss of ALA3 function caused pollen tube defects in growth and ovule targeting and significantly affected the polar localization pattern of PRK3 and PRK6. Both PRK3 and PRK6 contain two polybasic clusters in the intracellular juxtamembrane domain, and they bound to PS in vitro. PRK3 and PRK6 with polybasic cluster mutations showed reduced or abolished binding to PS and altered polar localization patterns, and they failed to effectively complement the pollen tube-related phenotypes of prk mutants. These results suggest that ALA3 influences the precise localization of PRK3, PRK6, and other PRKs by regulating the distribution of PS, which plays a key role in regulating pollen tube growth and guidance.

Salinity is detrimental to plant growth, crop production and food security worldwide. Excess salt triggers increases in cytosolic Ca2+ concentration, which activate Ca2+-binding proteins and upregulate the Na+/H+ antiporter in order to remove Na+. Salt-induced increases in Ca2+ have long been thought to be involved in the detection of salt stress, but the molecular components of the sensing machinery remain unknown. Here, using Ca2+-imaging-based forward genetic screens, we isolated the Arabidopsis thaliana mutant monocation-induced [Ca2+]i increases 1 (moca1), and identified MOCA1 as a glucuronosyltransferase for glycosyl inositol phosphorylceramide (GIPC) sphingolipids in the plasma membrane. MOCA1 is required for salt-induced depolarization of the cell-surface potential, Ca2+ spikes and waves, Na+/H+ antiporter activation, and regulation of growth. Na+ binds to GIPCs to gate Ca2+ influx channels. This salt-sensing mechanism might imply that plasma-membrane lipids are involved in adaption to various environmental salt levels, and could be used to improve salt resistance in crops.

BACKGROUND: PHACTR1 (phosphatase and actin regulators) plays a key role in cortical migration and synaptic activity by binding and regulating G-actin and PPP1CA. This study aimed to expand the genotype and phenotype of patients with de novo variants in PHACTR1 and analyse the impact of variants on protein-protein interaction. METHODS: We identified seven patients with PHACTR1 variants by trio-based whole-exome sequencing. Additional two subjects were ascertained from two centres through GeneMatcher. The genotype-phenotype correlation was determined, and AlphaFold-Multimer was used to predict protein-protein interactions and interfaces. RESULTS: Eight individuals carried missense variants and one had CNV in the PHACTR1. Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) was the unifying phenotype in eight patients with missense variants of PHACTR1. They could present with other types of seizures and often exhibit drug-resistant epilepsy with a poor prognosis. One patient with CNV displayed a developmental encephalopathy phenotype. Using AlphaFold-Multimer, our findings indicate that PHACTR1 and G-actin-binding sequences overlap with PPP1CA at the RPEL3 domain, which suggests possible competition between PPP1CA and G-actin for binding to PHACTR1 through a similar polymerisation interface. In addition, patients carrying missense variants located at the PHACTR1-PPP1CA or PHACTR1-G-actin interfaces consistently exhibit the IESS phenotype. These missense variants are mostly concentrated in the overlapping sequence (RPEL3 domain). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with variants in PHACTR1 can have a phenotype of developmental encephalopathy in addition to IESS. Moreover, our study confirmed that the variants affect the binding of PHACTR1 to G-actin or PPP1CA, resulting in neurological disorders in patients.

BACKGROUND: To compare the diagnostic performance of the Node-RADS scoring system and lymph node (LN) size in preoperative LN assessment for rectal cancer (RC), and to investigate whether the selection of size as the primary criterion whereas morphology as the secondary criterion for LNs can be considered the preferred method for clinical assessment. METHODS: Preoperative CT data of 146 RC patients treated with radical resection surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The Node-RADS score and short-axis diameter of size-prioritized LNs and the morphology-prioritized LNs were obtained. The correlations of Node-RADS score to the pN stage, LNM number and lymph node ratio (LNR) were investigated. The performances on assessing pathological lymph node metastasis were compared between Node-RADS score and short-axis diameter. A nomogram combined the Node-RADS score and clinical features was also evaluated. RESULTS: Node-RADS score showed significant correlation with pN stage, LNM number and LNR (Node-RADS of size-prioritized LN: r = 0.600, 0.592, and 0.606; Node-RADS of morphology-prioritized LN: r = 0.547, 0.538, and 0.527; Node-RADSmax: r = 0.612, 0.604, and 0.610; all p < 0.001). For size-prioritized LN, Node-RADS achieved an AUC of 0.826, significantly superior to short-axis diameter (0.826 vs. 0.743, p = 0.009). For morphology-prioritized LN, Node-RADS exhibited an AUC of 0.758, slightly better than short-axis diameter (0.758 vs. 0.718, p = 0.098). The Node-RADS score of size-prioritized LN was significantly better than that of morphology-prioritized LN (0.826 vs. 0.758, p = 0.038). The nomogram achieved the best diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.861) than all the other assessment methods (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The Node-RADS scoring system outperforms the short-axis diameter in predicting lymph node metastasis in RC. Size-prioritized LN demonstrates superior predictive efficacy compared to morphology-prioritized LN. The nomogram combined the Node-RADS score of size-prioritized LN with clinical features exhibits the best diagnostic performance. Moreover, a clear relationship was demonstrated between the Node-RADS score and the quantity-dependent pathological characteristics of LNM.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common, heterogenous endocrine disorders and is the leading cause of ovulatory obstacle associated with abnormal folliculogenesis. Dysfunction of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) is recognized as a major factor that underlies abnormal follicle maturation. Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) expression in GCs differs between patients with and without PCOS. However, the role and mechanism of ANGPTL4 in impaired follicular development are still poorly understood. Here, the case-control study was designed to investigate the predictive value of ANGPTL4 in PCOS while cell experiments in vitro were set for mechanism research. Results found that ANGPTL4 levels in serum and in follicular fluid, and its expression in GCs, were upregulated in patients with PCOS. In KGN and SVOG cells, upregulation of ANGPTL4 inhibited the proliferation of GCs by blocking G1/S cell cycle progression, as well as the molecular activation of the EGFR/JAK1/STAT3 cascade. Moreover, the STAT3-dependent CDKN1A(p21) promoter increased CDKN1A transcription, resulting in remarkable suppression effect on GCs. Together, our results demonstrated that overexpression of ANGPTL4 inhibited the proliferation of GCs through EGFR/JAK1/STAT3-mediated induction of p21, thus providing a novel epigenetic mechanism for the pathogenesis of PCOS.

Rationale: Air pollution has been linked with sleep disturbance in adults, but the association in children remains unclear. Objectives: To examine the associations of prenatal and postnatal exposure to fine particulate matter (particulate matter ⩽2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter; PM2.5) with sleep quality and sleep disturbances among children in 551 Chinese cities. Methods: A total of 1,15,023 children aged 3-7 years from the Chinese National Cohort of Motor Development were included. Sleep quality was measured using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). PM2.5 exposure was estimated using a satellite-based model. Generalized additive mixed models with Gaussian and binomial distributions were used to examine the associations of PM2.5 exposure with CSHQ scores and risk of sleep disturbance, respectively, adjusting for demographic characteristics and temporal trends. Measurements and Main Results: Early-life PM2.5 exposure was associated with higher total CSHQ score, and the association was stronger for exposure at age 0-3 years (change of CSHQ score per interquartile range increase of PM2.5 = 0.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.29-0.63) than during pregnancy (0.22; 95% CI, 0.12-0.32). The associations were more evident in sleep-disordered breathing and daytime sleepiness. Postnatal PM2.5 exposure was associated with increased risk of sleep disturbance (adjusted odds ratio for per-interquartile range increase of PM2.5 exposure at age 0-3 years, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.04-1.15), but no associations were found for prenatal exposure. Children who were exclusively breastfed for <6 months and had neonatal ICU admission may be more vulnerable to sleep disturbance related to PM2.5 exposure. Conclusions: PM2.5 exposure can impair sleep quality in preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Nonmalignant pleural effusion (NMPE) is common and remains a definite health care problem. Pleural effusion was supposed to be a risk factor for acute kidney injury (AKI). Incidence of AKI in NMPE patients and whether there is correlation between the size of effusions and AKI is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of AKI in NMPE inpatients and its association with effusion size. STUDY DESIGN AND METHOD: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of inpatients admitted to the Chinese PLA General Hospital with pleural effusion from 2018-2021. All patients with pleural effusions confirmed by chest radiography (CT or X-ray) were included, excluding patients with diagnosis of malignancy, chronic dialysis, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), community-acquired AKI, hospital-acquired AKI before chest radiography, and fewer than two serum creatinine tests during hospitalization. Multivariate logistic regression and LASSO logistic regression models were used to identify risk factors associated with AKI. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests for effusion volume were performed adjusted for the variables selected by LASSO. Causal mediation analysis was used to estimate the mediating effect of heart failure, pneumonia, and eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73m2 on AKI through effusion volume. RESULTS: NMPE was present in 7.8% of internal medicine inpatients. Of the 3047 patients included, 360 (11.8%) developed AKI during hospitalization. After adjustment by covariates selected by LASSO, moderate and large effusions increased the risk of AKI compared with small effusions (moderate: OR 1.47, 95%CI 1.11-1.94 p = 0.006; large: OR 1.86, 95%CI 1.05-3.20 p = 0.028). No significant modification effect was observed among age, gender, diabetes, bilateral effusions, and eGFR. Volume of effusions mediated 6.8% (p = 0.005), 4.0% (p = 0.046) and 4.6% (p < 0.001) of the effect of heart failure, pneumonia and low eGFR on the development of AKI respectively. CONCLUSION: The incidence of AKI is high among NMPE patients. Moderate and large effusion volume is independently associated with AKI compared to small size. The effusion size acts as a mediator in heart failure, pneumonia, and eGFR.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity worldwide, but effective early prediction remains a challenge due to the lack of reliable biomarkers. METHODS: Based on the extensive human biobank of our large-scale assisted reproductive cohort platform, the first-trimester serum levels of 48 cytokines, total immunoglobulins (Igs), anti-phosphatidylserine (aPS) antibodies, and several previously reported PE biomarkers [including placental growth factor (PlGF), soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), and activin A] were measured in 34 women diagnosed with PE and 34 matched normotensive controls. RESULTS: The PE group has significantly higher first-trimester serum levels of interleukin (IL)-2Rα, IL-9, tumor necrosis factor-ß (TNF-ß), RANTES, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), total IgM, and total IgG, and aPS IgG optical density (OD) value, as well as lower first-trimester serum levels of PlGF and total IgA and aPS-IgG immune complexes (IC) OD value than the control group. Combining top five first-trimester serum biomarkers (total IgM, total IgG, PlGF, aPS IgG, and total IgA) achieved superior predictive value [area under the curve (AUC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.983 (0.952-1.000), with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 94.1%] for PE development compared to PlGF and PlGF/sFlt-1 independently [AUC and 95% CI 0.825 (0.726-0.924) and 0.670 (0.539-0.800), respectively]. CONCLUSION: We identified novel first-trimester serum biomarkers and developed an effective first-trimester prediction model using immune-related factors and PlGF for PE, which could facilitate the development of early diagnostic strategies and provide immunological insight into the further mechanistic exploration of PE.

Graphene(G)-noble metal-ZnO hybrid systems were developed as highly sensitive and recyclable surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platforms, in which ultrathin graphene of varying thickness was embedded between two metallic layers on top of a ZnO layer. Due to the multi-dimensional plasmonic coupling effect, the Au/G/Ag@ZnO multilayer structure possessed ultrahigh sensitivity with the detection limit of Rhodamine 6 G (R6G) as low as 1.0×10-13 mol/L and a high enhancement factor of 5.68×107. Both experimental and simulation results showed that graphene films could significantly regulate the interlayer plasmon resonance coupling strength, and single-layer graphene had the best interlayer regulation effect. Additionally, the SERS substrate structure prepared through physical methods exhibited high uniformity, the graphene component of the substrate possessed excellent molecular enrichment ability and silver oxidation inhibition characteristics, resulting in a substrate with high stability and exceptional reproducibility. The signal change was less than 15%. Simultaneously, due to the excellent photocatalytic performance of the low-cost and wide-band-gap semiconductor material ZnO, the SERS substrate exhibited exceptional reusability. Even after five cycles of adsorption-desorption, the SERS performance remained stable and maintained a reliable detection limit. The study introduced a novel approach to creating multilayer composite SERS substrates that exhibited exceptional performance, offering a new analytical tool with high sensitivity, stability, and reusability.

STUDY QUESTION: Does oral micronized progesterone result in a non-inferior ongoing pregnancy rate compared to vaginal progesterone gel as luteal phase support (LPS) in fresh embryo transfer cycles? SUMMARY ANSWER: The ongoing pregnancy rate in the group administered oral micronized progesterone 400 mg per day was non-inferior to that in the group administered vaginal progesterone gel 90 mg per day. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: LPS is an integrated component of fresh IVF, for which an optimal treatment regimen is still lacking. The high cost and administration route of the commonly used vaginal progesterone make it less acceptable than oral micronized progesterone; however, the efficacy of oral micronized progesterone is unclear owing to concerns regarding its low bioavailability after the hepatic first pass. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This non-inferiority randomized trial was conducted in eight academic fertility centers in China from November 2018 to November 2019. The follow-up was completed in April 2021. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: A total of 1310 infertile women who underwent their first or second IVF cycles were enrolled. On the day of hCG administration, the patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups for LPS: oral micronized progesterone 400 mg/day (n = 430), oral micronized progesterone 600 mg/day (n = 440) or vaginal progesterone 90 mg/day (n = 440). LPS was started on the day of oocyte retrieval and continued till 11-12 weeks of gestation. The primary outcome was the rate of ongoing pregnancy. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: In the intention-to-treat analysis, the rate of ongoing pregnancy in the oral micronized progesterone 400 mg/day group was non-inferior to that of the vaginal progesterone gel group [35.3% versus 38.0%, absolute difference (AD): -2.6%; 95% CI: -9.0% to 3.8%, P-value for non-inferiority test: 0.010]. There was insufficient evidence to support the non-inferiority in the rate of ongoing pregnancy between the oral micronized progesterone 600 mg/day group and the vaginal progesterone gel group (31.6% versus 38.0%, AD: -6.4%; 95% CI: -12.6% to -0.1%, P-value for non-inferiority test: 0.130). In addition, we did not observe a statistically significant difference in the rate of live births between the groups. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: The primary outcome of our trial was the ongoing pregnancy rate; however, the live birth rate may be of greater clinical interest. Although the results did not show a difference in the rate of live births, they should be confirmed by further trials with larger sample sizes. In addition, in this study, final oocyte maturation was triggered by hCG, and the findings may not be extrapolatable to cycles with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist triggers. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: Oral micronized progesterone 400 mg/day may be an alternative to vaginal progesterone gel in patients reluctant to accept the vaginal route of administration. However, whether a higher dose of oral micronized progesterone is associated with a poorer pregnancy rate or a higher rate of preterm delivery warrants further investigation. RabA4 subfamily proteins, the key regulators of intracellular transport, are vital for tip growth of plant polar cells, but their unique distribution in the apical zone and role in vesicle targeting and trafficking in the tips remain poorly understood. Here, we found that loss of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) AMINOPHOSPHOLIPID ATPASE 3 (ALA3) function resulted in a marked decrease in YFP-RabA4b/ RFP-RabA4d- and FM4-64-labeled vesicles from the inverted-cone zone of the pollen tube tip, misdistribution of certain intramembrane compartment markers, and an obvious increase in pollen tube width. Additionally, we revealed that phosphatidylserine (PS) was abundant in the inverted-cone zone of the apical pollen tube in wild-type Arabidopsis and was mainly colocalized with the trans-Golgi network/early endosome, certain post-Golgi compartments, and the plasma membrane. Loss of ALA3 function resulted in loss of polar localization of apical PS and significantly decreased PS distribution, suggesting that ALA3 is a key regulator for establishing and maintaining the polar localization of apical PS in pollen tubes. We further demonstrated that certain Rab GTPases colocalized with PS in vivo and bound to PS in vitro. Moreover, ALA3 and RabA4d collectively regulated pollen tube growth genetically. Thus, we propose that the tip-localized PS established by ALA3 is crucial for Rab GTPase-mediated vesicle targeting/trafficking and polar growth of pollen tubes in Arabidopsis.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Which factors are associated with the risk of clinical pregnancy loss in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing IVF? DESIGN: Case-control study nested in a multicentre randomized trial comparing live birth rates between fresh and frozen embryo transfer in women with PCOS. Women with the outcome of clinical pregnancy loss were selected as the case group, those with live birth as the control group. Parameters before IVF treatment and variables during ovarian stimulation and embryo transfer were compared. RESULTS: Women with clinical pregnancy loss had higher maternal body mass index (BMI, P = 0.010), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH, P = 0.032), 2-h glucose concentration after 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT, P = 0.025), and a higher proportion of fresh embryo transfers (P = 0.001). There were significant interactions between the types of transfer and antral follicle count (AFC, P = 0.013), 2-h glucose concentration after OGTT (P = 0.024) on clinical pregnancy loss in PCOS, indicating that these factors may have different effects on pregnancy loss after fresh versus frozen embryo transfer. When the multivariable logistic regression analysis was stratified by the fresh or frozen embryo transfer, AFC (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.05) was a risk factor for clinical pregnancy loss after fresh embryo transfer, while 2-hour glucose concentration after OGTT (aOR 1.13, 95% CI 1.01-1.25) was associated with clinical pregnancy loss in frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles. CONCLUSIONS: In women with PCOS, fresh embryo transfer, higher BMI, AFC and 2-h glucose concentration after OGTT were risk factors for clinical pregnancy loss. FET may be a better choice to decrease the risk of clinical pregnancy loss, especially for those with higher AFC. During FET, 2-h glucose after OGTT appears to be associated with clinical pregnancy loss and warrants close monitoring.

Due to a combination of lifestyle risk factors, the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been increasing in China, affecting an estimated 330 million people. Environmental risk factors can exacerbate these risks or independently contribute to CVD. Ozone is an overlooked and invisible risk factor, and it plays a significant role in the development of CVD. Our study provides a novel quantification of the ozone-attributable CVD mortality burden based on daily maximum 8-h average ozone concentration during May to October (6mDMA8) in Chinese adults in 2050, projected under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways 585 and 126, and using the updated WHO air quality guideline level. The study also considers the contributions made by changes in ozone exposure, population aging, population size, and baseline death rates of CVD between 2019 and 2050. While adopting a sustainable and green pathway (SSP 126) can reduce the projected magnitude of premature CVD deaths to 359,200 in 2050, it may not be sufficient to reduce the CVD mortality burden significantly. Therefore, it is crucial to implement strategies for stricter ozone control and reducing the baseline death rate of CVD to mitigate the impacts of ozone on Chinese adults.

Changes in human genome-wide long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with air pollution are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of air pollution on human exosomal lncRNAs. A randomized, crossover trial was conducted among 35 healthy adults. Participants were allocated to 4 h exposure in road (high air pollution) and park (low air pollution) sessions in random order with a 2 week washout period. RNA sequencing was performed to measure lncRNAs. Differential lncRNAs were identified using a linear mixed-effect model. Mean concentrations of air pollutants such as ultrafine particles (UFP), black carbon (BC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were 2-3 times higher in the road than those in the park. Fifty-five lncRNAs [false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05] including lncRNA NORAD, MALAT1, and H19 were changed in response to air pollution exposure. We found that 54 lncRNAs were associated with CO, 49 lncRNAs with UFP, 49 lncRNAs with BC, 48 lncRNAs with NO2, and 4 lncRNAs with PM2.5 (FDR < 0.05). These differential lncRNAs participated in dozens of pathways including cardiovascular signaling, epithelial cell proliferation, inflammation, and transforming growth factor. This trial for the first time profiled changes of human exosomal lncRNAs following air pollution. Our findings revealed multiple biological processes moderated by lncRNAs and provided epigenetic insights into cardiovascular effects of air pollution.

We study the regulation of the electronic and spin transport properties of the WGe2N4 monolayer by adsorbing 4d transition metal atoms (Y-Cd) using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function. It is found that the adsorption of transition metal atoms (except Pd, Ag and Cd atoms) can introduce a magnetic moment into the WGe2N4 monolayer. Among the transition metal atoms, the adsorption of Nb and Rh atoms transforms WGe2N4 from a semiconductor to a half-metal and a highly spin-polarized semiconductor, respectively. The half-metallic Nb-adsorbed WGe2N4 system is selected to investigate the spin transport properties, and a high magnetoresistance ratio of 107% is achieved. In both parallel and antiparallel magnetization configurations, the spin filtering efficiency reaches close to 100% in the whole bias range, and the antiparallel magnetization configuration exhibits a dual spin filtering effect with a rectification ratio of up to 104. Our study predicts that the adsorption of 4d transition metal heteroatoms is an effective method to regulate the electronic and magnetic properties of WGe2N4 towards high-performance spintronic devices.

INTRODUCTION: Accumulating studies have suggested singletons born after frozen embryo transfer (FET) were higher than those born after fresh embryo transfer (Fre-ET). However, fewer studies had investigated the gestational age-specific between-group difference in birthweight. This study aimed to investigate the gestational week-specific difference in singleton birthweight after FET vs Fre-ET and explore potential factors that impact the difference. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, a total of 25 863 singletons were included. Multivariable linear regression and logistic regression were used to evaluate the between-group differences in mean birthweight and the incidences of large for gestational age (LGA) and small for gestational age (SGA), respectively. RESULTS: Multivariable regression analyses showed a statistically significant interaction between types of embryo transfer (ie FET vs Fre-ET) and the gestational week on mean birthweight (P < 0.001) and on the risks of large for gestational age (P = 0.001) and small for gestational age (P < 0.001). When stratified by gestational week, the differences in mean birthweight and the risks of LGA and SGA were only observed in singletons born at 37 gestational weeks or later. After adjusting for confounders, full-term but not preterm singletons born after FET had a higher birthweight (3497.58 ± 439.73 g vs 3445.67 ± 450.24 g; adjusted mean difference 58.35 g; 95% confidence interval [CI] 38.72-77.98 g), a higher risk of LGA (24.3% vs 21.1%; adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.28, 95% CI 1.15-1.42) and a lower risk of SGA (3.1% vs 4.8%; adjusted OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.53-0.70) compared with those born after Fre-ET. CONCLUSIONS: The differences in birthweight between FET and Fre-ET were observed in full-term singletons but not preterm singletons.

Rationale: It remains unknown whether long-term ozone exposure can impair lung function. Objectives: To investigate the associations between long-term ozone exposure and adult lung function in China. Methods: Lung function results and diagnosis of small airway dysfunction (SAD) were collected from a cross-sectional study, the China Pulmonary Health Study (N = 50,991). We used multivariable linear and logistic regression models to examine the associations of long-term ozone exposure with lung function parameters and SAD, respectively, adjusting for demographic characteristics, individual risk factors, and longitudinal trends. We then performed a stratification analysis by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Measurements and Main Results: We observed that each 1 SD (4.9 ppb) increase in warm-season ozone concentrations was associated with a 14.2 ml/s (95% confidence interval [CI], 8.8-19.6 ml/s] decrease in forced expiratory flow at the 75th percentile of vital capacity and a 29.5 ml/s (95% CI, 19.6-39.5 ml/s) decrease in mean forced expiratory flow between the 25th and 75th percentile of vital capacity. The odds ratio of SAD was 1.09 (95% CI, 1.06-1.11) for a 1 SD increase in warm-season ozone concentrations. Meanwhile, we observed a significant association with decreased FEV1/FVC but not with FEV1 or FVC. The association estimates were greater in the COPD group than in the non-COPD group. Conclusions: We found independent associations of long-term ozone exposure with impaired small airway function and higher SAD risks, while the associations with airflow obstruction were weak. Patients with COPD appear to be more vulnerable.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of seamless care management under FOCUS-PDCA for patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI) complicated with dysphagia and its influence on nutrition status and neurological functions. Methods: A total of 98 patients with acute cerebral infarction complicated with dysphagia admitted to our hospital from March 2019 to December 2022 were selected and divided into two groups with equal numbers. The control group received routine nursing management. The study group implemented seamless nursing management under FOCUS-PDCA based on the control group. The therapeutic effect, nutritional status, and neurological function of the two groups were compared before and after intervention. Patients in both groups were intervened for 1 month. Results: (1) After the intervention, the Water Drinking Test (WDT) Grade I and Grade II of the study group increased from 0.00% before the intervention to 32.65%, and the control group also increased from 0.00% before the intervention to 14.29% and 22.45%. , while the number of Grade III, Grade IV, and Grade V decreased in both the control group and the study group. That is, the WDT level test of both groups after the intervention was better than before the intervention, and the research group was better than the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (Z=2.732, P = .006). (2) There was no statistical significance in the GUSS score and SWAL-QOL of the two groups before the intervention (P > .05); after the intervention, the GUSS score of the control group (16.32±4.26) was lower than that of the study group (18.52±4.85) (P < .001) , the SWAL-QOL score of the control group (116.48±31.05) was lower than that of the study group (143.08±33.85) (P < .001), and the GUSS scores and SWAL-QOL of the two groups after the intervention were higher than before the intervention (P < .001). (3) Compared with the nutritional status of the two groups, there was no statistical significance in PA, ALB, and Hb before intervention (P > .05); after intervention, PA, ALB, and Hb in the control group were (218.15±27.15) and (38.67±5.84) respectively. (120.85±31.05), all lower than the study group (261.15±22.52), (42.84±6.32), (134.18±30.47) (P < .01), and the PA, ALB and Hb of the two groups after intervention were all higher than before intervention (P < .001). (4) Comparing TSF and MAMC between the two groups, there was no statistical significance in TSF and MAMC before intervention (P > .05); after intervention, TSF and MAMC in the control group were (13.84±6.38) and (28.61±4.15) respectively, both of which were low. Compared with the study group (16.94±6.69), (33.15±3.84) (P < .001), and the TSF and MAMC of the two groups after the intervention were higher than before the intervention (P < .001). (5) Comparing the neurological function and limb function between the two groups, there was no statistical significance in NIHSS and FMA before intervention (P > .05); after intervention, NIHSS and FMA in the control group were (19.64±3.52) and (48.15±4.85) respectively. The NIHSS was higher than that of the study group (16.52±3.85), and the FMA was lower than that of the study group (58.84±5.63) (P < .001). The NIHSS and FMA of both groups after the intervention were better than those before the intervention (P < .001). (6) The incidence rate of complications in the study group was 4.08%, which was lower than 18.37% in the control group (P < .05). Conclusion: Seamless nursing management for patients with ACI and dysphagia under the FOCUS-PDCA model has obvious effects. It can effectively improve the patient's swallowing function, reduce the degree of neurological deficit, improve their nutritional status and quality of life, and has fewer complications.
