RESUMEN

Lacustrine sediment quality indicates the effects of both natural and anthropogenic activities on the ecosystem and communities. Despite its ecological importance, myriad complexities, and potential contaminant sources, the spatial distribution of surficial sediments in Lake Victoria's Winam Gulf has never been comprehensively documented. The purpose of this study was to assess the spatial distribution, pathways, and ecological risk of metal elements in the lake using a sediment matrix. Sediment samples were collected throughout the gulf in November 2022. The concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Sn, Ti, Tl, U, and Zn were compared to different contamination metrics and ecological risk assessment indices. The average concentrations were in the following decreasing order: Zn > > > Cr > > Cu > Ni > Pb > Co > As > Cd with mean (± SD) of 185 ± 45 mg kg-1, 56 ± 15 mg kg-1, 45 ± 16 mg kg-1, 37 ± 11 mg kg-1, 24 ± 5 mg kg-1, 20 ± 7 mg kg-1, 3.9 ± 1.3 mg kg-1, 0.30 ± 0.09 mg kg-1, respectively, with strong indications of anthropogenic sources. Average concentrations were in the following decreasing order: Zn > > > Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Co, As, and Cd levels (mean ± SD) were 185 ± 45 mg kg-1, 56 ± 15 mg kg-1, 45 ± 16 mg kg-1, 37 ± 11 mg kg-1, 24 ± 5 mg kg-1, 20 ± 7 mg kg-1, 3.9 ± 1.3 mg kg-1 and 0.30 ± 0.09 mg kg-1 with strong indications of anthropogenic sources. The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and enrichment factor categorisation schemes, respectively, classified these as uncontaminated (level 0) and depletion to minimal enrichment (level 1), while the ecological risk analysis classified them as "low risk". The mouth of the Nyando River, as well as Kisumu, Kendu, and Homa bays, were the most element-enriched and should be prioritised for focused monitoring and remediation. As a result, targeted land management of urban, industrial, transportation, and agricultural areas offers the opportunity to reduce sediment inputs into the lake ecosystem.

RESUMEN

Emerging from the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is time to ground ourselves and retrospectively assess the recent achievements of SEGH over the past years. This editorial serves as a comprehensive report on the progress made in comparison to the aspirations and goals set by the society's board in 2019 (Watts et al., Environ Geochem Health 42:343-347, 2019) (Fig. 1) and reflects on the state of the SEGH community as it reached its 50th anniversary at the close of 2021 (Watts et al. Environ Geochem Health 45:1165-1171, 2023). The focus lies on how the SEGH community navigated through the extraordinary challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020, and to what extent the 2023 targets have been met.

The impact of population expansion through economic growth and development has been identified as one of the key drivers of both water and sediment contamination from potentially harmful elements (PHEs). This presents a major hazard not only to aquatic ecosystems but local riparian communities and beyond who rely heavily on this natural resource for drinking water and fish-a valuable source of dietary micronutrients and protein. The present study measured biogeochemical concentration of PHEs in water, sediment and fish from locations pooled into four zones within Winam Gulf and Lake Victoria area of Kenya. Captured fish were used as a sentinel receptor of lake health to evaluate potential risks to fisheries and aquaculture food security. In water, concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) were observed above the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) maximum contamination level drinking water guidelines (MCL), with aluminium (Al) observed above the Aquatic Life Criteria in all four zones. Similarly, sediment concentrations in all four zones exceeded the US EPA Effects range low (ERL) threshold guidelines for Cu, nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and Pb, with Cu, Zn and Pb classed at moderate contamination levels using the contamination factor. Fish tissue concentrations from the four zones were calculated using recommended daily intakes (RDI) and for PHEs as provisional maximum tolerable intakes (PMTIs) and indicated most macro- and micronutrients were at or below 10% RDI from aquaculture and wild fish, with Se indicating a greater RDI (16-29%) in all the zones. Contributions of PHEs to PMTIs were below threshold guidelines for both aquaculture and wild fish with only Cd, Cr and Pb levels being above the PMTI thresholds. There is a need to assess the long-term effects of persistent anthropogenic PHE input into Winam Gulf and the wider Lake Victoria basin. Continued monitoring of PHEs using both historical and more recent data will enable future management policies to be implemented through improved mitigation strategies to reduce their impact on water quality, fish health and subsequent human health.

RESUMEN

When the SEGH international board released a short editorial paper back in 2019, we described an aim to increase the membership offering, whilst improving the diversity of input regionally, by scientific discipline and to ensure greater and more regular contact across the regions from 2020 onwards. Wider aspirations described in 2019 (Watts et al. 2019) are discussed within this short communication at the end of 2021 to evaluate progress made. In particular, how the SEGH community adapted to the unprecedented circumstances that have challenged each and every one of us throughout the COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020 and are likely to influence our activities for the foreseeable future.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common cancers in most Eastern and Southern African countries, but its etiology has been understudied to date. To inform its research agenda, we undertook a review to identify, of the ESCC risk factors which have been established or strongly suggested worldwide, those with a high prevalence or high exposure levels in any ESCC-affected African setting and the sources thereof. We found that for almost all ESCC risk factors known to date, including tobacco, alcohol, hot beverage consumption, nitrosamines and both inhaled and ingested PAHs, there is evidence of population groups with raised exposures, the sources of which vary greatly between cultures across the ESCC corridor. Research encompassing these risk factors is warranted and is likely to identify primary prevention strategies.

Total mercury (THg) concentrations were measured for various fish species from Lakes Turkana, Naivasha and Baringo in the rift valley of Kenya. The highest THg concentration (636 ng g(-1) wet weight) was measured for a piscivorous tigerfish Hydrocynus forskahlii from Lake Turkana. THg concentrations for the Perciformes species, the Nile perch Lates niloticus from Lake Turkana and the largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides from Lake Naivasha ranged between 4 and 95 ng g(-1). The tilapiine species in all lakes, including the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, had consistently low THg concentrations ranging between 2 and 25 ng g(-1). In Lake Naivasha, the crayfish species, Procambrus clarkii, had THg concentrations similar to those for the tilapiine species from the same lake, which is consistent with their shared detritivore diet. THg concentrations in all fish species were usually consistent with their known trophic position, with highest concentrations in piscivores and declining in omnivores, insectivores and detritivores. One exception is the detritivore Labeo cylindricus from Lake Baringo, which had surprisingly elevated THg concentrations (mean=75 ng g(-1)), which was similar to those for the top trophic species (Clarias and Protopterus) in the same lake. Except for two Hydrocynus forskahlii individuals from Lake Turkana, which had THg concentrations near or above the international marketing limit of 500 ng g(-1), THg concentrations in the fish were generally below those of World Health Organization's recommended limit of 200 ng g(-1) for at-risk groups.

Toxic and genotoxic effects of alachlor, metolachlor, amitraz, chlordimeform, their respective environmentally stable degradation products 2,6-diethylaniline, 2-ethyl-4-methylaniline, 2,4-dimethylaniline, and two other related compounds, 3,4-dichloroaniline and aniline were compared. Acute toxicity tests with Chironomus riparius (96 h) and Vibrio fischeri (Microtox) and genotoxicity tests with a dark mutant of V. fischeri (Mutato) were carried out. Our results demonstrate that toxicity and genotoxicity of the pesticides are retained upon degradation to their alkyl-aniline metabolites. In the case of the herbicides alachlor and metolachlor, the toxicity to V. fischeri was enhanced upon degradation. Narcosis alone explains toxicity of the compounds to the midge, but not so for the bacteria suggesting a disparity in the selectivity of the test systems. All compounds showed direct genotoxicity in the Vibrio test. but amitraz and its metabolite were genotoxic at concentrations 10(3)-10(5) lower than all the other compounds. The observations indicate that stable aniline degradation products of the pesticides may contribute considerably to environmental risks of pesticides application and that genotoxic effects may arise upon degradation of pesticides.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the level of contamination with C. jejuni of raw chicken and beef meats sold in Nairobi and to assess their potential as sources of campylobacter infections to man. DESIGN: Dressed chicken and beef meat samples were randomly sourced from butcheries, markets and supermarkets in various parts of Nairobi over a period of two months. One hundred chicken and 50 beef samples were bacteriologically examined by selective enrichment and culture under microaerophilic environment. Thermophilic campylobacters were identified and characterised using standard physical and biochemical tests. SETTING: Veterinary Public Health Laboratories, Kabete, University of Nairobi. RESULTS: Thermophilic campylobacters were isolated from 77 (77%) poultry samples and one (2%) beef sample. Isolation rate (85.3%) was higher from chickens < 24 hours old since slaughter than those > 24 hours old. The beef isolate was 2% C. jejuni. Poultry samples yielded C. jejuni (59%), C. coli (39% and C. laridis (2%). CONCLUSION: These findings show that poultry meat sold at the counter is a major source of C. jejuni and C. coli, and that it is an important potential source of campylobacter infection. Proper cooking and hygienic handling before consumption is therefore essential.

Developmental effects of amitraz (acaricide), its metabolite (2,4-dimethylaniline), and paraquat (herbicide) on embryos of a nontarget organism, Xenopus laevis, were investigated. Following the standard protocol of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the experiments were carried out using native Xenopus frogs. There was a drastic increase in mortality from 24 h to 96 h for paraquat, but 2,4-dimethylaniline showed no mortality at the highest concentration tested (100 mg/L). The 96-h LC(50) values were 0.67, 3.27, and >>100 mg/L for paraquat, amitraz, and 2,4-dimethylaniline, respectively. At concentrations higher than 0.2 mg/L of paraquat all the embryos were malformed, whereas growth reduction was apparent at all test concentrations (0.1-5 mg/L). The most common teratogenic effects were flexures of the notochord and stunting of growth. Edema was the most common effect of amitraz on the embryos, and 100% of the surviving embryos in 5 mg/L were edematous. The 96-h EC(50) (malformation) values were 1.21 (95% CI 0.48-3.03) and 0.18 (95% CI 0.16-0.20) mg/L for amitraz and paraquat, respectively. The ratio of 96-h LC(50) to 96-h EC(50) (malformation), i.e., the teratogenicity index (TI) were 2.7 and 3.72 for amitraz and paraquat, respectively, and for 2,4-dimethylaniline (TI > 5) all the embryos in 25 mg/L showed observable pigment loss and encephalomegaly. This shows that paraquat and the degradation product of amitraz, 2,4-dimethylaniline, should be classified as teratogens. Teratogenic risks of massive application of these pesticides on Kenyan farms should therefore be considered.
