BACKGROUND: In patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), ischemic myocardial fibrosis assessed by late gadolinium enhancement (I-LGE) using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) have been reported. However, the clinical significance of I-LGE has not been completely understood. We aim to evaluate the I-LGE differ phenotypically from HCM without LGE or nonischemic myocardial fibrosis assessed by late gadolinium enhancement (NI-LGE) in the left ventricle (LV). METHODS: The patients with HCM whom was underwent CMR were enrolled, using cine cardiac magnetic resonance to evaluate LV function and LGE to detect the myocardial fibrosis. Three groups were assorted: 1) HCM without LGE; 2) HCM with LGE involved the subendocardial layer was defined as I-LGE; 3) HCM with LGE not involved the subendocardial layer was defined as NI-LGE. RESULTS: We enrolled 122 patients with HCM in the present study. LGE was detected in 58 of 122 (48%) patients with HCM, and 22 (18%) of patients reported I-LGE. HCM with I-LGE had increased higher left ventricular mass index (LVMI) (P < 0.0001) than HCM with NI-LGE or without LGE. In addition, HCM with I-LGE had a larger LV end- systolic volume (P = 0.045), lower LV ejection fraction (LVEF) (P = 0.026), higher LV myocardial mass (P < 0.001) and thicker LV wall (P < 0.001) more than HCM without LGE alone. The I-LGE were significantly associated with LVEF (OR: 0.961; P = 0.016), LV mass (OR: 1.028; P < 0.001), and maximal end-diastolic LVWT (OR: 1.567; P < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, LVEF (OR: 0.948; P = 0.013) and maximal end-diastolic LVWT (OR: 1.548; P = 0.001) were associated with higher risk for I-LGE compared to HCM without LGE. Noticeably, the maximal end-diastolic LVWT (OR: 1.316; P = 0.011) was the only associated with NI-LGE compared to HCM without LGE. CONCLUSIONS: I-LGE is not uncommon in patients with HCM. HCM with I-LGE was associated with significant LV hypertrophy, extensive LGE and poor LV ejection fraction. We should consider focal ischemic myocardial fibrosis when applying LGE to risk stratification for HCM.

Carboxylesterase 1 (CES1), a member of the serine hydrolase superfamily, is involved in a wide range of xenobiotic and endogenous substances metabolic reactions in mammals. The inhibition of CES1 could not only alter the metabolism and disposition of related drugs, but also be benefit for treatment of metabolic disorders, such as obesity and fatty liver disease. In the present study, we aim to develop potential inhibitors of CES1 and reveal the preferred inhibitor structure from a series of synthetic pyrazolones (compounds 1-27). By in vitro high-throughput screening method, we found compounds 25 and 27 had non-competitive inhibition on CES1-mediated N-alkylated d-luciferin methyl ester (NLMe) hydrolysis, while compound 26 competitively inhibited CES1-mediated NLMe hydrolysis. Additionally, Compounds 25, 26 and 27 can inhibit CES1-mediated fluorescent probe hydrolysis in live HepG2 cells with effect. Besides, compounds 25, 26 and 27 could effectively inhibit the accumulation of lipid droplets in mouse adipocytes cells. These data not only provided study basis for the design of newly CES1 inhibitors. The present study not only provided the basis for the development of lead compounds for novel CES1 inhibitors with better performance, but also offered a new direction for the explore of candidate compounds for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and related diseases.

Viruses pose a significant threat to human health, causing widespread diseases and impacting the global economy. Perilla frutescens, a traditional medicine and food homologous plant, is well known for its antiviral properties. This systematic review examines the antiviral potential of Perilla frutescens, including its antiviral activity, chemical structure and pharmacological parameters. Utilizing bioinformatics analysis, we revealed the correlation between Perilla frutescens and antiviral activity, identified overlaps between Perilla frutescens target genes and virus-related genes, and explored related signaling pathways. Moreover, a classified summary of the active components of Perilla frutescens, focusing on compounds associated with antiviral activity, provides important clues for optimizing the antiviral drug development of Perilla frutescens. Our findings indicate that Perilla frutescens showed a strong antiviral effect, and its active ingredients can effectively inhibit the replication and spread of a variety of viruses in this review. The antiviral mechanisms of Perilla frutescens may involve several pathways, including enhanced immune function, modulation of inflammatory responses, and inhibition of key enzyme activities such as viral replicase. These results underscore the potential antiviral application of Perilla frutescens as a natural plant and provide important implications for the development of new antiviral drugs.

Breast cancer is a significant threat to life and health, which needs more safe and effective drugs to be explored. Teadenol B is a characteristic chemical component of microbial fermented tea. This study discovered that teadenol B could exhibit obvious inhibitory effects on all four different clinical subtype characteristics of breast cancer cells. Proteomic studies show that deoxycytidine triphosphate deaminase (DCTD), which could block DNA synthesis and repair DNA damage, had the most significant and consistent reduction in all four types of breast cancer cells with the treatment of teadenol B. Considering MDA-MB-231 cells exhibit poor clinical prognosis and displayed substantial statistical differences in KEGG pathway enrichment analysis results, we investigated its impact on the size and growth of MDA-MB-231 triple-negative breast tumors transplanted into nude mice and demonstrated that teadenol B significantly suppressed tumor growth without affecting body weight significantly. Finally, we found that the conversion of LC3-I to LC3-II in MDA-MB-231 increased significantly with teadenol B treatment. This proved that teadenol B could be a strong autophagy promotor, which explained the down-regulation of DCTD to some extent and may be the potential mechanism underlying teadenol B's anti-breast cancer effects. This finding provides new evidence for drinking fermented tea to prevent breast cancer and highlights the potential of teadenol B as a novel therapeutic option for breast cancer prevention and treatment, necessitating further investigations to clarify its exact target and the details involved.

Non-healing wounds are one of the chronic complications of diabetes and have remained a worldwide challenge as one of the major health problems. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is proven to be very successful for diabetic wound treatment, for which the molecular basis is not understood. Adipocytes regulate multiple aspects of repair and may be therapeutic for inflammatory diseases and defective wound healing associated with aging and diabetes. Endothelial cell-derived extracellular vesicles could promote wound healing in diabetes. To study the mechanism by which HBO promotes wound healing in diabetes, we investigated the effect of HBO on fat cells in diabetic mice. A diabetic wound mouse model was established and treated with HBO. Haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and immunofluorescence were used for the analysis of wound healing. To further explore the mechanism, we performed whole-genome sequencing on extracellular vesicles (EVs). Furthermore, we conducted in vitro experiments. Specifically, exosomes were collected from human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) cells after HBO treatment, and then these exosomes were co-incubated with adipose tissue. The wound healing rate in diabetic mice treated with HBO was significantly higher. HBO therapy promotes the proliferation of adipose precursor cells. HUVEC-derived exosomes treated with HBO significantly promoted fat cell browning. These data clarify that HBO therapy may promote vascular endothelial cell proliferation and migration, and promote browning of fat cells through vascular endothelial cells derived exosomes, thereby promoting diabetic wound healing. This provides new ideas for the application of HBO therapy in the treatment of diabetic trauma.

Alternative treatment of long tracheal defects remains one of the challenges faced by thoracic surgeons. Tissue engineering has shown great potential in addressing this regenerative medicine conundrum and the technology to make tracheal grafts using this technique is rapidly maturing, leading to unique therapeutic approaches. However, the clinical application of tissue-engineered tracheal implants is limited by insufficient revascularization. Among them, realizing the vascularization of a tissue-engineered trachea is the most challenging problem to overcome. To achieve long-term survival after tracheal transplantation, an effective blood supply must be formed to support the metabolism of seeded cells and promote tissue healing and regeneration. Otherwise, repeated infection, tissue necrosis, lumen stenosis lack of effective epithelialization, need for repeated bronchoscopy after surgery, and other complications will be inevitable and lead to graft failure and a poor outcome. Here we review and analyze various tissue engineering studies promoting angiogenesis in recent years. The general situation of reconstructing a vascularized tissue-engineered trachea, including current problems and future development trends, is elaborated from the perspectives of seed cells, scaffold materials, growth factors and signaling pathways, surgical interventions in animal models and clinical applications. This review also provides ideas and methods for the further development of better biocompatible tracheal substitutes in the future.

PURPOSE: Few data are available regarding the nephrotoxicity of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) combination therapy in advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This study aimed to investigate the nephrotoxicity of ICI-based combination therapy versus standard of care sunitinib in patients with advanced RCC. METHODS: We searched Embase/PubMed/Cochrane Library for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Treatment-related nephrotoxicities including increase of creatinine and proteinuria were analyzed by Review Manager 5.4 software. RESULTS: Seven RCTs involving 5239 patients were included. The analysis showed that ICI combination therapy had similar risks of any grade (RR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.77-1.37, P = 0.87) and grade 3-5 (RR = 1.48, 95% CI: 0.19-11.66, P = 0.71) increased creatinine compared with sunitinib monotherapy. However, ICI combination therapy was associated with significantly higher risks of any grade (RR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.54-3.51, P < 0.0001) and grade 3-5 proteinuria (RR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.21-4.17, P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests that ICI combination therapy shows more nephrotoxicity of proteinuria than sunitinib in advanced RCC, which deserves a high attention in the clinic.

BACKGROUND: The first-line anti-rheumatic drug methotrexate (MTX) is used in the combination. Because of the unpredictable adverse reactions, optimization of relevant regimens is necessary and meaningful. This study aimed to study the possible interaction between Securidaca inappendiculate Hassk. Derived xanthones and MTX. METHODS: We established adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) model, which was treated with MTX and MTX + xanthone-rich fraction (XRF). The clinical efficacy was evaluated by histopathological examination, and LC-MS was used to monitor the blood concentration of MTX. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry were used to detect protein expression. In vitro, we assessed the activity of related transporters by cellular uptake assay based on HEK-293T cells. RESULTS: Compared with MTX-treated rats, inflammation in the immunized rats in the MTX + XRF group was obvious, indicating that XRF antagonized the anti-rheumatic effect of MTX. Meanwhile, XRF reduced liver and kidney injuries caused by MTX in addition to MTX. Results from immunohistochemical and nappendiculat assays suggested that XRF may reduce uptake of MTX by down-regulating reduced folate carrier 1 (RFC1). CONCLUSION: This study indicated that XRF could reduce the plasma concentration of MTX by inhibiting the expression of RFC1, antagonize the therapeutic effect of MTX on AIA rats, and reduce its oral bioavailability. The combination of S. inappendiculate and MTX should be further optimized to achieve the goal of increasing efficiency and reducing toxicity.

Brain energetics disturbance is a hypothesized cause of depression. Glucose is the predominant fuel of brain energy metabolism; however, the cell-specific change of glucose metabolism and underlying molecular mechanism in depression remains unclear. In this study, we firstly applied 18 F-FDG PET and observed brain glucose hypometabolism in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of corticosterone-induced depression of rats. Next, astrocytic glucose hypometabolism was identified in PFC slices in both corticosterone-induced depression of rats and cultured primary astrocytes from newborn rat PFC after stress-level corticosterone (100 nM) stimulation. Furthermore, we found the blockage of glucose uptake and the decrease of plasma membrane (PM) translocation of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) in astrocytic glucose hypometabolism under depressive condition. Interestingly, thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP), a glucose metabolism sensor and controller, was found to be over-expressed in corticosterone-stimulated astrocytes in vivo and in vitro. High TXNIP level could restrict GLUT1-mediated glucose uptake in primary astrocytes in vitro. Adeno-associated virus vector-mediated astrocytic TXNIP over-expression in rat medial PFC suppressed GLUT1 PM translocation, consequently developed depressive-like behavior. Conversely, TXNIP siRNA facilitated GLUT1 PM translocation to recover glucose hypometabolism in corticosterone-exposed cultured astrocytes. Notably, astrocyte-specific knockdown of TXNIP in medial PFC of rats facilitated astrocytic GLUT1 PM translocation, showing obvious antidepressant activity. These findings provide a new astrocytic energetic perspective in the pathogenesis of depression and, more importantly, provide TXNIP as a promising molecular target for novel depression therapy.

BACKGROUND: Ferroptosis has attracted increasing interest in cancer therapy. Emerging evidences suggest that naturally occurring naphthoquinones exhibit potent anti-glioma effects via various mechanisms. METHODS: The anti-glioma effects of plumbagin were evaluated by in vitro and in vivo experiments. Anti-glioma mechanism of plumbagin was studied by proteomics, flow cytometry, MDA assay, western blot, and RT-PCR. Gene knockdown/overexpression, molecular docking, PharmMappper database, and coimmunoprecipitation were used to study the targets of plumbagin. RESULTS: Plumbagin showed higher blood-brain barrier penetration ability than that of lapachol and shikonin and elicited significant growth inhibitory effects in vitro and in vivo. Ferroptosis was the main mechanism of plumbagin-induced cell death. Mechanistically, plumbagin significantly downregulated the protein and mRNA levels of xCT and decreased GPX4 protein levels. NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (NQO1) was revealed as a plumbagin predictive target using PharmMappper database and molecular docking. Plumbagin enhanced NQO1 activity and decreased xCT expression, resulting in NQO1-dependent cell death. It also induced GPX4 degradation via the lysosome pathway and caused GPX4-dependent cell death. CONCLUSIONS: Plumbagin inhibited in vitro and in vivo glioma growth via targeting NQO1/GPX4-mediated ferroptosis, which might be developed as a novel ferroptosis inducer or anti-glioma candidate.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common autoimmune disease and until now, the etiology and pathogenesis of RA is not fully understood, although dysregulation of immune cells is one of the leading cause of RA-related pathological changes. Based on current understanding, the priority of anti-rheumatic treatments is to restore immune homeostasis. There are several anti-rheumatic drugs with immunomodulatory effects available nowadays, but most of them have obvious safety or efficacy shortcomings. Therefore, the development of novel anti-rheumatic drugs is still in urgently needed. Cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) has been identified as an important aspect of the so-called neuro-immune regulation feedback, and the interaction between acetylcholine and alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) serves as the foundation for this signaling. Consistent to its immunomodulatory functions, α7nAChR is extensively expressed by immune cells. Accordingly, CAP activation greatly affects the differentiation and function of α7nAChR-expressing immune cells. As a result, targeting α7nAChR will bring profound therapeutic impacts on the treatment of inflammatory diseases like RA. RA is widely recognized as a CD4+ T cells-driven disease. As a major component of innate immunity, macrophages also significantly contribute to RA-related immune abnormalities. Theoretically, manipulation of CAP in immune cells is a feasible way to treat RA. In this review, we summarized the roles of different T cells and macrophages subsets in the occurrence and progression of RA, and highlighted the immune consequences of CAP activation in these cells under RA circumstances. The in-depth discussion is supposed to inspire the development of novel cell-specific CAP-targeting anti-rheumatic regimens.

This study attempted to manage the food waste and soybean curd residue generated in Taiwan's National Ilan University by black soldier fly-aided co-composting. The food waste and soybean curd residue were co-composted with rice husk as a bulking agent in 4:1 ratio and 0.42 mg BSF/g waste. The higher organic matter degradation of 31.9% was found in Container B (black soldier flies aided food waste and rice husk co-composting) with a rate constant of 0.14 d-1. In Container D (black soldier flies aided soybean curd residue and rice husk co-composting), the organic matter degradation of 29.4% was found with a rate constant of 0.29 d-1. The matured compost of 6.02 kg was obtained from 20 kg of food waste, while 5.83 kg of matured compost was generated from 20 kg of soybean curd residue. The physico-chemical parameters of the final matured compost were in the favorable range of Taiwan's compost standards. The germination index was 188.6% and 194.78% in Containers B and D, respectively. The present study will expand the application of BSF at the institutional level which prove to be a feasible solution for rapid, clean, and efficient composting of post-consumer food wastes.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a radiomic prediction model using initial noncontrast computed tomography (CT) at admission to predict in-hospital mortality in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: A total of 379 TBI patients from three cohorts were categorized into training, internal validation, and external validation sets. After filtering the unstable features with the minimum redundancy maximum relevance approach, the CT-based radiomics signature was selected by using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) approach. A personalized predictive nomogram incorporating the radiomic signature and clinical features was developed using a multivariate logistic model to predict in-hospital mortality in patients with TBI. The calibration, discrimination, and clinical usefulness of the radiomics signature and nomogram were evaluated. RESULTS: The radiomic signature consisting of 12 features had areas under the curve (AUCs) of 0.734, 0.716, and 0.706 in the prediction of in-hospital mortality in the internal and two external validation cohorts. The personalized predictive nomogram integrating the radiomic and clinical features demonstrated significant calibration and discrimination with AUCs of 0.843, 0.811, and 0.834 in the internal and two external validation cohorts. Based on decision curve analysis (DCA), both the radiomic features and nomogram were found to be clinically significant and useful. CONCLUSION: This predictive nomogram incorporating the CT-based radiomic signature and clinical features had maximum accuracy and played an optimized role in the early prediction of in-hospital mortality. The results of this study provide vital insights for the early warning of death in TBI patients.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a global health and human rights issue that impacts the physical and mental health of victims and increases healthcare costs. PURPOSE: This research was developed to investigate the prevalence of sexual violence against women in Taiwan and the help-seeking behavior of these women. Based on the findings, suggestions are provided for both government policymakers and frontline medical staffs. METHODS: Data for this study were collected using a face-to-face interview survey conducted with women aged 18 to 74 years nationwide. RESULTS: Of the 1,504 women surveyed, 87 (5.76%) reported having suffered from sexual violence. The one-year prevalence was 1.41%, while the lifetime prevalence was 5.76%. Although sexual violence is known to impact physical and mental health, most victims are reluctant to seek help from formal support systems. CONCLUSIONS: Victims of sexual violence often delay seeking help from medical settings. Although the victims identified in this study endured chronic symptoms and psychological trauma, few had made formal disclosures of intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) incidents. Frontline medical staffs have the opportunity to play an important role in sexual-violence response if they are made aware of incidents of IPSV / non-IPSV. Thus, to facilitate disclosure, screening for IPSV and non-IPSV should be made standard practice in high-risk medical settings.

Genome-scale metabolic models have been utilized extensively in the study and engineering of the organisms they describe. Here we present the analysis of a published dataset from pooled transposon mutant fitness experiments as an approach for improving the accuracy and gene-reaction associations of a metabolic model for Zymomonas mobilis ZM4, an industrially relevant ethanologenic organism with extremely high glycolytic flux and low biomass yield. Gene essentiality predictions made by the draft model were compared to data from individual pooled mutant experiments to identify areas of the model requiring deeper validation. Subsequent experiments showed that some of the discrepancies between the model and dataset were caused by polar effects, mis-mapped barcodes, or mutants carrying both wild-type and transposon disrupted gene copies-highlighting potential limitations inherent to data from individual mutants in these high-throughput datasets. Therefore, we analyzed correlations in fitness scores across all 492 experiments in the dataset in the context of functionally related metabolic reaction modules identified within the model via flux coupling analysis. These correlations were used to identify candidate genes for a reaction in histidine biosynthesis lacking an annotated gene and highlight metabolic modules with poorly correlated gene fitness scores. Additional genes for reactions involved in biotin, ubiquinone, and pyridoxine biosynthesis in Z. mobilis were identified and confirmed using mutant complementation experiments. These discovered genes, were incorporated into the final model, iZM4_478, which contains 747 metabolic and transport reactions (of which 612 have gene-protein-reaction associations), 478 genes, and 616 unique metabolites, making it one of the most complete models of Z. mobilis ZM4 to date. The methods of analysis that we applied here with the Z. mobilis transposon mutant dataset, could easily be utilized to improve future genome-scale metabolic reconstructions for organisms where these, or similar, high-throughput datasets are available.

Data mining is an important method to obtain the key information from a large amount of data, and it is widely applied in the research on the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). The compatibility law of herbs is a key issue in the research of TCM prescriptions. This reflects the flexibility and effectiveness of TCM prescriptions, and it is also a crucial link to the development of TCM modernization. Therefore, it is the core purpose of the research on TCM prescriptions to find the compatibility law of herbs and clarify the scientific connotation. Data mining, as an effective method and an important approach, has formed a standardized system in the research of compatibility law of herbs, which can reveal the relationship between different Chinese herbs and summarize the internal rules in compatibility. Two hundred and twenty two effective papers were sorted out and categorized in this article. The results showed that data mining was mainly applied in finding the core Chinese herb pairs, summarizing the utility and attributes of TCM prescriptions, revealing the relationship between prescriptions, Chinese herbs and syndromes, finding the optimal dose of Chinese herbs, and producing the new prescriptions. The problems of data mining in research of herbs compatibility rules were summarized, and its development and trend in current researches were discussed in this article to provide useful references for the in-depth study of data mining in the compatibility law of Chinese herbs.

BACKGROUND: Drug resistance is a major cause of therapeutic failure that is often associated with elevated autophagy and apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) expression. Herein, we investigated the role of APE1 and autophagy in A549 cells treated with cisplatin. METHODS: SILAC proteomics was applied to obtain a panoramic view of cisplatin treatment in KRASG12S-mutant A549 cells. Quantity analysis of cellular apoptosis and autophagy was based on flow cytometry. Western blotting was used to examine the expression levels of apoptosis- and autophagy-related proteins, as well as those of APE1. Knockdown of APE1 was achieved by RNA interference. Immunoprecipitation was further employed to reveal the molecular interaction of APE1, p53, and LC3 when A549 cells were exposed to cisplatin. RESULTS: SILAC proteomics revealed that 72 canonical pathways, including base excision repair (BER) and autophagy signalling pathways, were regulated after cisplatin treatment in A549 cells. Cisplatin markedly induced autophagy and apoptosis in A549 cells, accompanied by remarkable APE1 increase. Suppression of autophagy enhanced the inhibition effect of cisplatin on cell growth, proliferation, and colony formation; however, APE1 inhibition enhanced the expression of LC3-I/II, suggesting that APE1 and autophagy are compensatory for cell survival to evade the anticancer action of cisplatin. Immunoprecipitation results revealed the triple complex of APE1-p53-LC3 in response to cisplatin plus CQ in A549 cells. Dual inhibition of APE1 and autophagy significantly enhanced cisplatin-induced apoptosis, which eventually overcame drug resistance in cisplatin-resistant A549 cells. CONCLUSIONS: Dual inhibition of APE1 and autophagy greatly enhances apoptosis in parental KRASG12S-mutant A549 cells and cisplatin-resistant A549 cells via regulation of APE1-p53-LC3 complex assembly, providing therapeutic vulnerability to overcome cisplatin resistance in the context of KRASG12S-mutant lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Modern-day penile prostheses use infection retardant coating to decrease rates of postoperative infection, subsequently reducing explantation and revision rates as well. The Coloplast Titan models are dipped into antimicrobial solutions right before implantation, and the components used for dipping can be tailored toward the patient. AIM: To compare infection, explantation, and revision rates among different dipping solutions used before implantation for patients with diabetes receiving a Coloplast Titan implant. METHODS: We systematically reviewed 932 patients with diabetes receiving a primary penile implant across 18 different centers from the period April 2003 to August 2018. Of those patients, 473 received a Coloplast device, whereas 459 received an AMS device. Data regarding the type of antimicrobial solution used before implantation were recorded for 468 patients receiving a Coloplast Titan, including whether or not they suffered a postoperative infection and if they underwent explantation and/or revision. Outcome rates were compared using Fisher's exact and Pearson's chi-square tests, and logistic regression modeling was performed to account for covariates. OUTCOMES: The main outcome measures of this study were postoperative infection, explantation, and revision rates. RESULTS: Of the total 932 patients reviewed, 33 suffered a postoperative infection. Of 468 patients receiving Coloplast implants, there was a 3.4% infection rate. The most commonly used antibiotic combination before dipping was vancomycin + gentamicin (59.0%). There was a significantly lower rate of postoperative infection, explantation, and revision when vancomycin + gentamicin was used than those associated with the use of all other dipping solutions ([1.4% vs 6.4%; P = .004], [1.1% vs 8.3%; P < .001], and [2.5% vs 12.5; P < .001], respectively). After adjusting for age, body mass index, preoperative blood glucose level, and hemoglobin A1c, the use of other dips was an independent predictor of postoperative infection (odds ratio: 0.191; P = .049). The inclusion of rifampin in the dipping solution trended toward being a significant risk factor for infection (P = .057). Including antifungals in the dipping solution did not affect infection (P = .414), explantation (P = .421), or revision (P = .328) rates. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Vancomycin + gentamicin was the most efficacious combination of antibiotics used for dipping in terms of preventing postoperative infection and subsequent explantation and revision. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: Data were sampled across multiple institutions providing a large sample that may be more representative of the population of interest. A key limitation of the study was its retrospective nature, which prevented us from controlling certain variables. CONCLUSION: The use of rifampin did not provide the same type of protection, possibly representing a shift in resistance patterns of common bacteria responsible for device infection. The present work aims to develop a novel and sustainable approach to adsorb and recover low-concentration Hg0 in the off-gas downstream a distillation/condensation system in the recycling processes for waste Hg-containing devices. Hg0 adsorption and regeneration efficiencies of raw and HNO3-treated activated carbon fiber cloth (ACFC) were examined. The adsorption experiments were conducted with an initial Hg0 concentration of 260-300 µg/m3 at room temperature. The regeneration of ACFC was done by an electrothermal swing process with 20, 40, and 60 W direct currents. The experimental results showed that the Hg0 adsorption efficiency of raw ACFC increased to approximately 90% after the 60 W electrothermal regeneration. After HNO3 treatment, the content of oxygen functional groups on HNO3-treated ACFC increased, which enhanced the Hg0 adsorption performance and resulted in over 90% adsorption efficiency for the samples before and after electrothermal regeneration. Importantly, both raw and HNO3-treated ACFCs retained the high adsorption efficiency after nine cycles of adsorption/regeneration, indicating that both raw and HNO3-treated ACFCs were effective and renewable adsorbents for low-concentration Hg0 adsorption and recovery. A Hg adsorption/regeneration mechanism was proposed to explain the increasing adsorption efficiency after electrothermal regeneration and the great adsorption efficiency of HNO3-treated ACFC.

In this study, a high-gravity (HiGee) process incorporating CO2 and NOx reduction from flue gas in a petrochemical plant coupled with petroleum coke fly ash (PCFA) treatment was established. The performance of HiGee was systematically evaluated from the engineering, environmental, economic, and energy aspects (a total of 15 key performance indicators) to establish the air pollution, energy efficiency, waste utilization nexus. The engineering performance was evaluated that lower energy consumption of 78 kWh/t-CO2 can be achieved at a capture capacity of 600 kg CO2/t-PCFA. A net emission reduction of 327.3 kg-CO2/t-PCFA could be determined based on six environmental impact indicators. A cost-benefit analysis was conducted using operating cost, product sale, carbon credit, and savings in air pollution fees to present a better technological selection compared to existing carbon capture and storage plants. The waste heat recovery from the flue gas via the HiGee process could be measured via moisture condensation and attendant elimination of white smog emissions. Retrofitted heat recovery and energy intensity up to 131.8 kJ/t-PCFA and 0.21 kWh/t-PCFA were assessed. Finally, a comprehensive analysis of the HiGee process based on three daily load scenarios of CO2 capture scale were conducted, suggesting an optimal operating condition of the HiGee for generating profitability.
