AIM: To assess the impact of adult body mass index (BMI) trajectories on the risk of obesity-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the U.S. adults after adjustment for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. METHODS: Data were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2007 to 2018, including male and female participants aged 29-59 years. Rao-Scott adjusted chi-square was employed to detect associations between categorical variables in descriptive analyses. Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for NCDs and BMI trajectories, adjusted for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Kaplan-Meier curves illustrated the cumulative incidence over time. RESULTS: Analyses were carried out on 15 721 participants and revealing significant differences among BMI trajectories in terms of demographic, lifestyle, and health characteristics. The overall prevalence of NCDs was 28.0% (95%CI:26.6-28.9). The cumulative incidence over time was higher in the high increase, moderate increase, and mixed trajectory groups, with a correspondingly higher cumulative risk (p < 0.001). Non-overweight trajectory was considered reference category in Cox models. The BMI trajectories were independently associated with an increased risk of NCDs, even after adjusting for potential confounders (HR: 1.7; 95%CI: 1.4-1.9 for moderate increase; HR: 3.6; 95%CI: 3.2-4.1 for high increase; and HR: 2.4; 95%CI: 2.1-2.7, for mixed). Furthermore, differences between males and females were also observed. CONCLUSION: The transition to and persistence of obesity into adulthood increases the risk of NCDs. The implementation of targeted interventions with long-term monitoring of BMI may be beneficial in the prevention of future obesity-related NCDs.

Porphyra sensu lato has economic importance for food and pharmaceutical industries due to its significant physiological activities resulting from its bioactive compounds (BACs). This study aimed to determine the optimal nitrate dosage required in short-term cultivation to achieve substantial BAC production. A nitrate experiment using varied concentrations (0 to 6.5 mM) revealed optimal nitrate uptake at 0.5 mM in the first two days and at 3 and 5 mM in the last five days. Polyphenols and carbohydrates showed no differences between treatments, while soluble proteins peaked at 1.5 and 3 mM. Total mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were highest in algae incubated at 5 and 6.5 mM, and the highest antioxidant activity was observed in the 5 mM, potentially related to the MAAs amount. Total carbon and sulfur did not differ between treatments, while nitrogen decreased at higher nitrate. This discovery highlights the nuanced role of nitrate in algal physiology, suggesting that biological and chemical responses to nitrate supplementation can optimize an organism's health and its commercially significant bioactive potential. Furthermore, given its ability to absorb high doses of nitrate, this alga can be cultivated in eutrophic zones or even in out-/indoor tanks, becoming an excellent option for integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) and bioremediation.

Porphyra sensu lato is one of the most economically significant and widely cultured and consumed algae in the world. Porphyra species present excellent nutraceutic properties due to their bioactive compounds (BACs). This research aimed to find the most efficient aqueous extraction method for BACs by examining alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis. Alkaline hydrolysis with 2.5% sodium carbonate (SC) and at 80 °C proved optimal for extracting all BACs (phycobiliproteins, soluble proteins, polyphenols, and carbohydrates) except mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), which were best extracted with water only, and at 80 °C. Enzymatic hydrolysis, particularly with the 'Miura' enzymatic cocktail (cellulase, xylanase, glycoside hydrolase, and ß-glucanase), showed superior results in extracting phycoerythrin (PE), phycocyanin (PC), soluble proteins, and carbohydrates, with increases of approximately 195%, 510%, 890%, and 65%, respectively, compared to the best alkaline hydrolysis extraction (2.5% SC and 80 °C). Phenolic content analysis showed no significant difference between the 'Miura' cocktail and 2.5% SC treatments. Antioxidant activity was higher in samples from alkaline hydrolysis, while extraction of MAAs showed no significant difference between water-only and 'Miura' treatments. The study concludes that enzymatic hydrolysis improves the efficiency of BACs extraction in P. linearis, highlighting its potential for the nutraceutical industry, and especially with respect to MAAs for topical and oral UV-photoprotectors.

Propolis is a natural resinous product produced by Apis mellifera bees from the exudates of various plants. The color of propolis (green) is a consequence of its botanical origin, as bees collect young tissues and leaves of Baccaris dracunculifolia. This study evaluated the chemical composition and extraction kinetics of essential oils obtained from Brazilian green propolis by hydrodistillation. Hydrodistillation was performed for 360 min and analyzed at different times (30, 60, 120, 240, and 360 min), allowing the calculation of the accumulated content (% w/w) and the identification of the essential oil chemical profile. The GC/FID and GC/MS analysis led to the annotation of 60 compounds with estragole (13.30 %), benzyl propanoate (14.59 %), and (E)-nerolidol (13.57 %) as the main compounds. The optimum conditions for extraction of phenylpropanoids (PP), hydrocarbons (HD), monoterpenes (MT), and oxygenated monoterpenes (OMT) are between 30 and 120 min. In comparison, sesquiterpenes (ST) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (OST) are extracted more efficiently between 240 and 360 min. The optimal extraction speed determination is essential for industrial-scale processing to obtain components such as sesquiterpenes, which have a high economic value in the cosmetic/perfumery and pharmaceutical industries.

KEY MESSAGE: The overexpression of the soybean GmEXPA1 gene reduces plant susceptibility to M. incognita by the increase of root lignification. Plant expansins are enzymes that act in a pH-dependent manner in the plant cell wall loosening and are associated with improved tolerance or resistance to abiotic or biotic stresses. Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) can alter the expression profile of several expansin genes in infected root cells. Studies have shown that overexpression or downregulation of particular expansin genes can reduce plant susceptibility to PPNs. Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are obligate sedentary endoparasites of the genus Meloidogyne spp. of which M. incognita is one of the most reported species. Herein, using a transcriptome dataset and real-time PCR assays were identified an expansin A gene (GmEXPA1; Glyma.02G109100) that is upregulated in the soybean nematode-resistant genotype PI595099 compared to the susceptible cultivar BRS133 during plant parasitism by M. incognita. To understand the role of the GmEXPA1 gene during the interaction between soybean plant and M. incognita were generated stable A. thaliana and N. tabacum transgenic lines. Remarkably, both A. thaliana and N. tabacum transgenic lines overexpressing the GmEXPA1 gene showed reduced susceptibility to M. incognita. Furthermore, plant growth, biomass accumulation, and seed yield were not affected in these transgenic lines. Interestingly, significant upregulation of the NtACC oxidase and NtEFE26 genes, involved in ethylene biosynthesis, and NtCCR and Nt4CL genes, involved in lignin biosynthesis, was observed in roots of the N. tabacum transgenic lines, which also showed higher lignin content. These data suggested a possible link between GmEXPA1 gene expression and increased lignification of the root cell wall. Therefore, these data support that engineering of the GmEXPA1 gene in soybean offers a powerful biotechnology tool to assist in RKN management.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between nutritional status in early adulthood and the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs); To evaluate the influence of sociodemographic factors and lifestyle on the outcomes of BMI kg/m2 ≤24.9, ≥25.0, and ≥30.0; to estimate the population attributable fraction (PAF) to BMI elevated at 25 years old in the burden of NCDs in American adults. METHODS: We used data from 15 721 American adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2018. The Hazard Ratio (HR), Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated in the proportional risk regression models of Cox (entire population) and Poisson (restricted to non-patients), respectively. The proportionality of the risk between the burden of NCDs and BMI at 25 years old was drawn by the Kaplan-Meier curve, and the PAF was calculated. All analyses were adjusted taking into account the sample weights. RESULTS: Health disparities (sex, age, race/ethnicity, education, poverty index, and education level), and lifestyle (physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption) influenced the current nutritional status. Cumulative survival in overweight and obese groups decreased considerably over time (p < .0001). Being overweight and obese in adulthood may increase the risk of early NCDs (HR: 1.68, 95% CI: 1.54-1.84 and HR: 2.87, 95% CI: 2.56-3.21, respectively). About 22.72% (95% CI: 19.99-25.36, p < .001) of the burden NCDs could have been avoided if overweight at age 25 had been prevented. CONCLUSIONS: Monitoring weight change from young adulthood can provide a sensitive and useful clinical measure for early detection of adverse trends in NCDs risk.

Background: Severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) surveillance is recommended to assess the severity of respiratory infections disease. In 2021, the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge, in collaboration with two general hospitals, implemented a SARI sentinel surveillance system based on electronic health registries. We describe its application in the 2021/2022 season and compare the evolution of SARI cases with the COVID-19 and influenza activity in two regions of Portugal. Methods: The main outcome of interest was the weekly incidence of patients hospitalized due to SARI, reported within the surveillance system. SARI cases were defined as patients containing ICD-10 codes for influenza-like illness, cardiovascular diagnosis, respiratory diagnosis, and respiratory infection in their primary admission diagnosis. Independent variables included weekly COVID-19 and influenza incidence in the North and Lisbon and Tagus Valley regions. Pearson and cross-correlations between SARI cases, COVID-19 incidence and influenza incidence were estimated. Results: A high correlation between SARI cases or hospitalizations due to respiratory infection and COVID-19 incidence was obtained (ρ = 0.78 and ρ = 0.82, respectively). SARI cases detected the COVID-19 epidemic peak a week earlier. A weak correlation was observed between SARI and influenza cases (ρ = -0.20). However, if restricted to hospitalizations due to cardiovascular diagnosis, a moderate correlation was observed (ρ = 0.37). Moreover, hospitalizations due to cardiovascular diagnosis detected the increase of influenza epidemic activity a week earlier. Conclusion: In the 2021/2022 season, the Portuguese SARI sentinel surveillance system pilot was able to early detect the COVID-19 epidemic peak and the increase of influenza activity. Although cardiovascular manifestations associated with influenza infection are known, more seasons of surveillance are needed, to confirm the potential use of cardiovascular hospitalizations as an indicator of influenza activity.

Undernutrition is characterized by an imbalance of essential nutrients with an insufficient nutritional intake, a disorder in which the clinical manifestations in most cases are the result of the economic and social context in which the individual lives. In 1990, the study by the medical and humanitarian Naíde Teodósio (1915-2005) and coworkers, which formulated the Regional Basic Diet (RBD) model for inducing undernutrition, was published. This diet model took its origin from the observation of the dietary habits of families that inhabited impoverished areas from the Pernambuco State. RBD mimics an undernutrition framework that extends not only to the Brazilian population, but to populations in different regions worldwide. The studies based on RBD-induced deficiencies provide a better understanding of the impact of undernutrition on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the most diverse prevalent diseases. Indexed papers that are analyzed in this review focus on the importance of using RBD in different areas of knowledge. These papers reflect a new paradigm in translational medicine: they show how the study of pathology using the RBD model in animals over the past 30 years has and still can help scientists today, shedding light on the mechanisms of prevalent diseases that affect impoverished populations.

Aedes aegypti transmits arbovirus, which is a public health concern. Certain filamentous fungi have the potential to control the disease. Here, the effects of Metarhizium anisopliae s.l. CG 153, Beauveria bassiana s.l. CG 206 and Schinus molle L. were investigated against Aedes aegypti larvae. In addition, the effect of essential oil on fungal development was analyzed. Fungal germination was assessed after combination with essential oil at 0.0025 %, 0.0075 %, 0.005 %, or 0.01 %; all of the oil concentrations affected germination except 0.0025 % (v/v). Larvae were exposed to 0.0025 %, 0.0075 %, 0.005 %, or 0.01 % of the essential oil or Tween 80 at 0.01 %; however, only the essential oil at 0.0025 % achieved similar results as the control. Larvae were exposed to fungi at 107 conidia mL-1 alone or in combination with the essential oil at 0.0025 %. Regardless of the combination, M. anisopliae reduced the median survival time of mosquitoes more than B. bassiana. The cumulative survival of mosquitoes exposed to M. anisopliae alone or in combination with essential oil was 7.5 % and 2 %, respectively, and for B. bassiana, it was 75 % and 71 %, respectively. M. anisopliae + essential oil had a synergistic effect against larvae, whereas B. bassiana + essential oil was antagonistic. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and histopathology confirmed that the interaction of M. anisopliae was through the gut and hemocoel. In contrast, the mosquito's gut was the main route for invasion by B. bassiana. Results from gas chromatography studies demonstrated sabinene and bicyclogermacrene as the main compounds of S. molle, and the in-silico investigation found evidence that both compounds affect a wide range of biological activity. For the first time, we demonstrated the potential of S. molle and its interaction with both fungal strains against A. aegypti larvae. Moreover, for the first time, we reported that S. molle might be responsible for significant changes in larval physiology. This study provides new insights into host-pathogen interplay and contributes to a better understanding of pathogenesis in mosquitoes, which have significant consequences for biological control strategies.

Maxillofacial metastases are rare but represent advanced disease progression and a poor prognosis. The primary purpose of this article is to describe a patient with previously diagnosed and treated invasive ductal breast carcinoma who developed a metastatic lesion in the maxillary gingiva. In addition, this article presents a brief literature review of case reports on metastatic breast cancer manifestations in the gingiva. In the present case, a 68-year-old woman had been diagnosed and treated for invasive ductal breast carcinoma. At the 6-month follow-up after treatment for breast cancer, she complained of pain in the right leg and spine, swelling in the right arm associated with redness, and a nodular growth in the maxillary gingiva that was painful, friable, and associated with tooth mobility. Imaging examinations and microscopic analysis of an oral biopsy specimen revealed disease progression to the oral cavity, femur, lung, and brain. Because of the advanced disease, the patient died within a few weeks. The literature review identified 6 articles that reported varied clinical presentations of metastatic breast cancer in the gingiva. Invasive ductal carcinoma was the most common histologic type. Routine dental follow-up of patients with cancer is essential for the identification and diagnosis of oral lesions to ensure early intervention for lesions that may be distant metastases mimicking benign lesions.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of intermittent explosive disorder (IED) in comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders and to describe the temporal sequencing of disorders in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area, Brazil. METHODS: Data from the São Paulo Megacity Mental Health Survey, a population-based study of 5037 adult individuals, were analyzed. The World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CID 3.0) was used to assess lifetime DSM-IV disorders, including IED, with a response rate of 81.3%. RESULTS: The majority (76.8%) of respondents with IED meet the criteria for at least one other psychiatric disorder, with a prevalence almost twice as high as that observed in individuals without IED. The prevalence of any anxiety, mood, impulse control or substance use disorders in respondents with IED was more than two times higher compared to those without IED, with prevalence ratios ranging from 2.1 (95% CI 1.74-2.48) to 2.9 (95% CI 2.12-4.06). The diagnosis of IED occurred earlier than most of the other mental disorders, except for those with usual onset in early childhood, as Specific and Social Phobias and Attention Deficit Disorder. CONCLUSION: Considering that IED is a highly comorbid disorder and has an earlier onset than most other mental comorbidities in the Brazilian general population, these results may be useful in guiding governmental mental health actions.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Chronic malnutrition (M) affects >1 billion people worldwide. Epidemiological data point to long-term renal and cardiovascular outcomes (e.g. arterial hypertension, cardiorenal syndromes). The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) has been implicated in the physiopathology of these disturbances, but M-induced alterations in RAAS-modulated renal Na+ handling and their cardiovascular repercussions are not known. Moreover, altered tissue-specific histone deacetylases (HDAC) results in arterial hypertension and the use of sodium Valproate (Val; a HDAC inhibitor) reduces blood pressure. However, there are no reports regarding the renal and cardiovascular effects of HDAC inhibition in M, or on the signaling pathways involved. The central aim of our study has been to investigate whether alterations in the HDAC/RAAS axis underpin alterations in active Na+ transport in the kidney and heart, and affects blood pressure. METHODS: Male rats aged 28 days were given either a control (C) or a multideficient diet (Regional Basic Diet, RBD), which mimics alimentary habits from developing countries. Subgroups received Losartan (Los), a blocker of type 1 Angiotensin II receptors. When the rats reached 70 days, new subgroups received Val until they were 90 days of age. Homogenates and enriched plasma membrane fractions from renal cortex corticis and cardiomyocytes were obtained by differential centrifugation of the tissues. The activity of renal and cardiac deacetylases was assayed by measuring - after incubation with the membranes - the amount of deacetylated lysines in a substrate containing an acetylated lysine side chain. Protein kinases activities were measured following the incorporation of the γ-phosphoryl group of [γ-32P]ATP into Ser/Thr residues of histone type III-S. The activity of Na+-transporting ATPases (kidney and heart) was quantified by measuring the release of Pi from ATP that was sensitive to ouabain ((Na++K+)ATPase), or sensitive to furosemide (Na+-ATPase). Tail-cuff plethysmography was used to measure systolic blood pressure and heart rate. RESULTS: M provoked HDAC downregulation, which was reversed by Los and Val, either alone or in combination, with selective upregulation of protein kinases C and A (PKC, PKA) in renal cortex corticis, but not in left ventricle cardiomyocytes. The 2 kinases were strongly inhibited by Los and Val in both organs. Malnourished rats developed elevated systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and heart rate (HR) at 70 days of age; Los and Val restored the control SAP, but not HR. Functional and the above biochemical alterations were associated with the deregulation of renal and cardiac Na+-transporting ATPases. (Na++K+)ATPase activities were downregulated in M rats in both organs, and were further inhibited by the pharmacological treatments in the renal cortex corticis (C and M groups) and the left ventricle (only in C rats). No additional effect was found in cardiac (Na++K+)ATPase from M rats. Ouabain-resistant Na+-ATPase was upregulated in renal cortex corticis and downregulated in cardiomyocytes, returning to C values after administration of Los and Val. CONCLUSION: The HDAC/RAAS axis appears to be a key regulator of Na+-transporting ATPases in renal cortex corticis and cardiomyocytes via an appropriate balance of PKC and PKA activities. Modifications within the HDAC/RAAS axis provoked by chronic M - with repercussions in renal and cardiac Na+ transport - underpin alterations in bodily Na+ homeostasis that culminate with the onset of arterial hypertension and potential cardiorenal syndrome.

Spore settlement and development are bottlenecks for resilience of habitat-forming macroalgal species. These processes are directly related to temperature, a global stressor protagonist of ocean warming. The toxic effects of local pollutants such as copper may be worsened under a global warming scenario. Therefore, in this paper, we investigated the effects of increased temperature combined with elevated concentrations of copper on the viability, photosynthetic pigments, and ultrastructure of Gelidium floridanum tetraspores. Tetraspores were cultivated on slides with sterilized seawater or seawater enriched with CuCl2 , and incubated under 24°C or 30°C for 24 h. Tetraspores cultivated with copper 3.0 µM under 30°C had lower viability. Both temperature and copper had a significant effect on phycocyanin and phycoerythrin concentrations. Samples cultivated with copper under 30°C presented a heavily altered cellular structure, with vesicles throughout the cytoplasm, chloroplasts with altered structure and cells with degenerated cytoplasm and cell walls. Our findings show that temperature and copper significantly affect the viability, photosynthetic pigments, and ultrastructure of G. floridanum tetraspores, presenting an additive interaction for the physiology of this seaweed's early stages.

RESUMEN

Lichen sclerosus is an uncommon chronic inflammatory disease, which rarely affects the oral mucosa. Here, we describe the occurrence of oral lichen sclerosus with gingival destruction in a 12-year-old female patient. After diagnostic confirmation by histopathology, intralesional injection of corticosteroid was performed, producing satisfactory remission of the lesion.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is an uncommon pathology that affects gingival or alveolar mucosa. Although PGCG can be associated with dental implants, little is known about this lesion and implant osseointegration as well as its etiopathogenesis and the treatments available. This study sought to report a rare case of PGCG associated with dental implant, emphasizing its clinical and histopathological aspects. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man had an exophytic, reddish lesion, around a crown attached to a dental implant located in the left mandible. Radiographically, there was bone loss around the implant. After excisional biopsy, histological examination revealed a submucosal proliferation of multinucleated giant cells rendering the diagnosis of peripheral giant cell granuloma. Patient has been under follow-up for 6 months with no recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Peri-implant lesions must be completely removed to prevent recurrence of PGCG and implant failure, even in cases suspected to be reactive. Besides, histological examination must be performed on all peri-implant reactions to achieve the appropriate diagnosis and, consequently, the best treatment and follow up.

Ocean warming is increasing and scientific predictions suggest a rise of up to 4°C in sea water temperatures. The combination of a polluted and warmer environment may be detrimental for aquatic species, especially for primary producers such as seaweeds. This study investigated the potential for interactive effects of an increased seawater temperature in a copper-rich environment on the photosynthetic pigments and metabolic compounds of the red seaweed Gelidium floridanum. Seaweed samples were cultivated in a factorial design with temperature (24°C and 30°C), copper (0 and 3 µM), and time (7 and 14 d). The exposure of G. floridanum to copper and 30°C for 7 d resulted in a lower concentration of chlorophyll a, smaller phycobiliprotein rods and lower concentration of soluble sugars. After 14 d of cultivation, a higher concentration of chlorophyll a and soluble sugars could be observed on seaweeds cultivated under 30°C. The accumulation of carotenoids and the release of phenolic compounds indicated specific protective mechanisms against temperature and copper, respectively. Overall, seaweeds grew less when exposed to copper 3 µM at 30°C.

Clove oil is used as an anaesthetic for many species of fish worldwide; however, relatively few studies have assessed its effectiveness on Amazon fish species and no compelling evidence has ever been reported on the relaxant properties of this oil for skeletal muscle of fish. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the latencies to deep anaesthesia and recovery, along with the myorelaxant effect of clove oil on three Amazon fish species: cardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi, banded cichlid, Heros severus and angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare, submitted to short-term anaesthetic baths. Fish were assayed in three groups of 60 fish each and individually anaesthetized in a completely randomized design with six clove oil concentrations using 10 fish/species/concentration. Electromyographic recordings from dorsal muscle were performed during stages of induction and recovery in which nine fish/species/stage were used. Deep anaesthesia was attained for all concentrations tested, and no mortalities were observed throughout the experiments and after a 48-h observation period. Concentration of 90 µL L-1 and above promoted fast deep anaesthesia (< 3 min) and calm recovery in angelfish and cardinal tetra, whereas the concentration of 60 µL L-1 sufficed to quickly anaesthetize banded cichlid. Times to full recovery were not significantly contrasting among species and occurred within appropriate time threshold (< 5 min). Clove oil exerted a conspicuous depression of muscle contraction power, and therefore can be effectively used as a muscle relaxant agent for P. scalare, P. axelrodi, H. severus and potentially, for other fish species.

Hepatic fibropoiesis has been confirmed in canine visceral leishmaniasis. In fibrotic disease, hepatic stellate cells (HSC) play an important role in fibropoiesis, undergoing activation by TGF-ß to acquire characteristics of myofibroblasts. These cells show extensive capacity for proliferation, motility, contractility, collagen synthesis and extracellular matrix component synthesis. The aim of this work was to identify markers of HSC activation in 10 symptomatic and 10 asymptomatic dogs naturally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum. Eight uninfected dogs were used as controls. Alpha-actin (α-SMA), vimentin and cytokeratin were investigated by immunohistochemistry as HSC markers. The cytokine TGF-ß in tissue was also evaluated by immunohistochemistry. All infected dogs showed higher numbers of reticular fibres than controls. Fibropoiesis found in infected dogs was always associated with the presence of parasites and chronic granulomatous hepatitis. Positive correlation was found among fibropoiesis, parasite tissue load and expression of α-SMA. There was no correlation between fibropoiesis, vimentin and cytokeratin markers. The expression of cytokine TGF-ß was higher in infected dogs than in controls, but not significantly different between symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs. These results confirm previous work describing the intense hepatic fibropoiesis in dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum, but now associated them with overexpression of TGF-ß, where α-SMA may be a superior marker for activated HSC cells in CVL.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor, especially in the minor salivary glands. This case report describes a 40-year-old man who presented with an EMC on the palate. Histologically, the tumor was characterized by a biphasic structure consisting of duct-lining cuboidal cells in the inner layer and clear myoepithelial cells in the outer layer. The clear cells predominated, and the diagnosis was confirmed with immunohistochemical staining. The inner cuboidal epithelial cells were positive for cytokeratins, whereas the outer cells were positive for S-100 protein and smooth muscle actin. The patient was treated with a wide surgical excision, and no recurrence or metastasis was observed at a 10-year follow-up. A literature review found only 30 well-documented cases of EMC in the intraoral minor salivary glands.

Florid osseous dysplasia (FOD) has been described as a condition that typically affects the jaws of middle-aged women of African descent and usually presents as multiple radiopaque masses distributed throughout the jaws. The diagnosis is generally based on clinical and radiographic presentation, often involving various regions of the jaws without evident bone expansion. This article describes the course of FOD in a 27-year-old African-American woman during 22 years of follow-up, emphasizing the dynamic radiographic characteristics of this entity and unusual co-occurrence with multiple simple bone cysts. These data reinforce the importance of long-term follow-up in patients diagnosed with FOD.
