BACKGROUND: Dandelion has a great potential to be used as feed additive. Using microbial fermentation technology to degrade cell walls is conducive to enable better release of bioactive compounds of dandelion. This study intended to explore the effect of fermented dandelion (FD) on production performance, meat quality, immune function, and intestinal microbiota of broiler chickens. One-hundred and twenty 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chickens were randomly allotted into three treatments: CON (basal diet, control), LFD and HFD (basal diet with 500 and 1000 mg/kg FD, respectively), with five replicates of eight birds each. The experiment lasted for 42 days. RESULTS: The results showed that birds in HFD group had increased ADG during 1-21 days (P < 0.05). On day 21, the bursa of Fabricius index of birds in LFD group was higher (P < 0.05), while the serum contents of IFN-γ and TNF-ɑ were lower in HFD group (P < 0.05). FD supplementation decreased the observed_species, shannon, chao1 and ace indexes (P < 0.05) as well as the abundance of Bacteroidota, Bacteroides, and Alistipes (P < 0.05). Birds in HFD group had higher abundance of Firmicutes and lower abundance of Verrucomicrobiota (P < 0.05). LFD group had lower abundance of unidentified_bacteria (P < 0.05). On day 42, the abdominal fat yield of HFD group was decreased (P < 0.05). Birds in LFD group had lower L* and b* values of breast muscle (P < 0.05), while higher spleen index. The CAT activities of breast muscle of FD groups were higher (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In summary, dietary FD supplementation at 1000 mg/kg improved production performance and immune function and modulated microbiota composition in ileum of broiler chickens. FD can be supplemented in the diet to enhance performance and health of broiler chickens, of which 1000 mg/kg FD is more effective.

Fundamental sheep behaviours, for instance, walking, standing, and lying, can be closely associated with their physiological health. However, monitoring sheep in grazing land is complex as limited range, varied weather, and diverse outdoor lighting conditions, with the need to accurately recognise sheep behaviour in free range situations, are critical problems that must be addressed. This study proposes an enhanced sheep behaviour recognition algorithm based on the You Only Look Once Version 5 (YOLOV5) model. The algorithm investigates the effect of different shooting methodologies on sheep behaviour recognition and the model's generalisation ability under different environmental conditions and, at the same time, provides an overview of the design for the real-time recognition system. The initial stage of the research involves the construction of sheep behaviour datasets using two shooting methods. Subsequently, the YOLOV5 model was executed, resulting in better performance on the corresponding datasets, with an average accuracy of over 90% for the three classifications. Next, cross-validation was employed to verify the model's generalisation ability, and the results indicated the handheld camera-trained model had better generalisation ability. Furthermore, the enhanced YOLOV5 model with the addition of an attention mechanism module before feature extraction results displayed a mAP@0.5 of 91.8% which represented an increase of 1.7%. Lastly, a cloud-based structure was proposed with the Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) to push the video stream for real-time behaviour recognition to apply the model in a practical situation. Conclusively, this study proposes an improved YOLOV5 algorithm for sheep behaviour recognition in pasture scenarios. The model can effectively detect sheep's daily behaviour for precision livestock management, promoting modern husbandry development.

Step counting is an effective method to assess the activity level of grazing sheep. However, existing step-counting algorithms have limited adaptability to sheep walking patterns and fail to eliminate false step counts caused by abnormal behaviors. Therefore, this study proposed a step-counting algorithm based on behavior classification designed explicitly for grazing sheep. The algorithm utilized regional peak detection and peak-to-valley difference detection to identify running and leg-shaking behaviors in sheep. It distinguished leg shaking from brisk walking behaviors through variance feature analysis. Based on the recognition results, different step-counting strategies were employed. When running behavior was detected, the algorithm divided the sampling window by the baseline step frequency and multiplied it by a scaling factor to accurately calculate the number of steps for running. No step counting was performed for leg-shaking behavior. For other behaviors, such as slow and brisk walking, a window peak detection algorithm was used for step counting. Experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in the accuracy of the proposed algorithm compared to the peak detection-based method. In addition, the experimental results demonstrated that the average calculation error of the proposed algorithm in this study was 6.244%, while the average error of the peak detection-based step-counting algorithm was 17.556%. This indicates a significant improvement in the accuracy of the proposed algorithm compared to the peak detection method.

BACKGROUND: Dandelion is becoming an exploitable alternative to the widely prohibited antibiotics in the poultry production. This research aimed to investigate the effects of dandelion on the growth performance and intestinal barrier function of broiler chickens maintained under standard condition of management. One-hundred and sixty 1-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) male broiler chickens were randomly divided into four groups, with five replicates of eight birds each. The birds were fed a basal diet supplemented without (control group, [CON]) or with 500 (low dose [LD]) or 1000 (high dose [HD]) mg/kg dandelion or with 250 mg/kg chlortetracycline 20% premix (CTC) for 42 days, including the starter phase (d 1 to 21) and the grower phase (d 22 to 42). Body weight (BW) of each bird and feed consumption of each replicate were measured at d 21 and d 42. The ileal tissues were collected on day 21 and 42 to determine expression of genes coding for tight junction protein and mucin as well as ELISA analysis for immune factor. The ileal digesta was collected for microbiota and short chain fatty acids analysis. RESULTS: Compared with CON group, during day 1-21, the average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed/gain ratio (F/G) of LD group were lower (P < 0.05); during day 22-42, the F/G of LD and CTC group tended to be lower (P = 0.07); during the overall phase, the ADFI of HD and CTC groups were decreased (P < 0.05), and the F/G of dandelion and CTC groups tended to be decreased (P = 0.07). On day 21, the relative mRNA expression of claudin, occludin-1 and mucin1 in dandelion groups were up-regulated (P < 0.05), and the ZO-1 mRNA expression in CTC group was increased (P < 0.05); on day 42, the claudin and mucin1 transcripts in LD group and ZO-1 transcripts in HD and CTC group were up-regulated (P < 0.05), while the occludin-1 and mucin1 transcripts in CTC group was significantly down-regulated (P < 0.05). In addition, the contents of TNF-α in dandelion groups were lower than that in CTC group (P < 0.05). In the analysis of ileal microbiota, on day 21, decreased α-diversity was observed in HD and CTC groups (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, on day 21, the relative abundance of Firmicutes in dandelion groups tended to be higher (P = 0.09), the relative abundance of Lactobacillus in LD and CTC group were increased (P < 0.05), while Bacteroidete, Bacteroides, and Alistipes relative abundance in dandelion and CTC groups were decreased (P < 0.05). On day 42, the Actinobacteriota relative abundance in CTC group tended to be higher (P = 0.05), and Lysinibacillus relative abundance of CTC group was higher (P = 0.02). Compared with CON group, on day 21, the propionic acid and butyric acid content in CTC group were higher, the butyric acid content in HD group was lower (P < 0.10). CONCLUSION: In summary, dietary dandelion supplementation at 500 mg/kg of diet enhanced growth performance of broilers by improving the intestinal barrier function. Dandelion can be supplemented in the diet as an antibiotics alternative to enhance production in poultry industry.

Copper (Cu2+) is a micronutrient that promotes the development and reproduction of organisms. However, with the rapid expansion of modern industry and agriculture, Cu2+ concentrations are increasing, which might have negative impacts on biological and ecological safety. Spodoptera litura is not only an intermittent outbreak pest but also can be used as a model organism to assess environmental and ecological risks. Therefore, the effects of the life history and population parameters of S. litura fed on artificial diets with different Cu2+ concentrations were analyzed using the age-stage, two-sex life table. Our results showed that not only the preadult survival rate but also the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and the finite rate of increase (λ) were significantly increased under exposure to low Cu2+ concentrations (2, 4, and 8 mg/kg). In addition, the population growth of S. litura was significantly faster, indicating that S. litura can adapt well to low concentrations and is likely to undergo outbreaks of damage. Whereas, in addition to a significant reduction in preadult survival rate, population growth rate, pupal weight, pupal length, adult body weight, and oviposition were also significantly reduced under exposure to high Cu2+ concentration (32 mg/kg). And when the concentration reached 64 mg/kg, the survival rate of adults was extremely low, suggesting a decrease in the adaptation of S. litura. These results can help to understand the population dynamics of S. litura and predict potential ecological risks.

BACKGROUND: Feruloyl oligosaccharides (FOs), the ferulic acid ester of oligosaccharides, may possess the physiological functions of both ferulic acid and oligosaccharides, including antioxidative activity and gut microbiota modulation capacity. The present study aimed to investigate whether FOs could regulate the intestinal antioxidative capacity of rats by modulating the MAPKs/Nrf2 signaling pathway and gut microbiota. Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups. Rats received a standard diet and were gavaged once daily with 0.85% normal saline, 100 mg kg-1 body weight vitamin C or FOs solution at doses of 20, 40 and 80 mg kg-1 body weight for 21 days. RESULTS: FOs strengthened the antioxidative capacity of the jejunum, as indicated by increased in contents of catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, as well as glutathione. Moreover, FOs administration upregulated the mRNA expression level of antioxidant-related genes (glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit, glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit and heme oxygenase-1) in the jejunum. Increases in phosphorylation levels of Nrf2, p38 and JNK were also observed. Administration with 40 mg kg-1 FOs altered the structure and composition of the cecal microbiota, which was indicated by the increased the relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteriota, and the decreased the relative abundances of Firmicutes, Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and Blautia. Furthermore, Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the altered cecal microbiota closely correlated with jejunal antioxidative capacity of rats. CONCLUSION: FOs could be used as an antioxidant for gut heath improvement through modulating the p38/JNK-Nrf2 signaling pathway and gut microbiota. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The gut microbiota of insects usually plays an important role in the development and reproduction of their hosts. The fecundity of Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata (Fabricius) varies greatly when they develop on different host plants. Whether and how the gut microbiota regulates the fecundity of H. vigintioctopunctata was unknown. To address this question, we used 16S rRNA sequencing to analyze the gut microbiomes of H. vigintioctopunctata adults fed on two host plant species (Solanum nigrum and Solanum melongena) and one artificial diet. The development of the ovaries and testes was also examined. Our results revealed that the diversity and abundance of gut microorganisms varied significantly in insects reared on different diets. The gut microbiota of H. vigintioctopunctata raised on the two host plants was similar, with Proteobacteria being the dominant phylum in both groups, whereas Firmicutes was the dominant phylum in the group reared on the artificial diet. The predominant microbiota in the S. nigrum group were Acinetobacter soli and Acinetobacter ursingii (Acinetobacter, Moraxellaceae); Moraxella osloensis (Enhydrobacter, Moraxellaceae); and Empedobacter brevis (Empedobacter, Weeksellaceae). The microbiota in this group are associated with high lipid metabolism. In addition, the beetles' ovaries and testes were more highly developed in the S. nigrum group than in the other two groups. These findings provide valuable information for elucidating the complex roles the gut microbiota play in the fecundity of H. vigintioctopunctata, and may also contribute to developing future novel control strategies involving this economically important pest.

BACKGROUND: Impaired gut microbiota leads to pathogenic bacteria infection, pro-inflammatory response and post-weaning diarrhea. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) K88 is a major cause of post-weaning diarrhea in weaned piglets. Fermented soybean meal (FSBM) could relieve diarrhea, alleviate inflammatory response, and modulate gut microbiota of weaned piglets. We used ETEC K88-challenged weaned piglet model to investigate the effects of FSBM on the growth performance, inflammatory response and cecal microbiota. Twenty-four crossbred piglets (6.8 ± 0.5 kg; 21 ± 2 days of age) were allotted into 2 treatment fed the diets with or without FSBM (6% at the expense of soybean meal). Six weaned piglets in each diet treatment were challenged by ETEC K88 (1 × 109 CFU/piglets) on day 15. The experimental period lasted for 20 days. RESULTS: The ETEC K88 challenge decreased (p < 0.05) fecal consistency and plasma interleukin-10 (IL-10) concentration, while increased (p < 0.05) average daily feed intake (ADFI) and plasma tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) concentrations. After ETEC K88 challenge, dietary FSBM replacement increased (p < 0.05) final body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), ADFI, and fecal consistency, but decreased feed conversion ratio (FCR). The plasma IL-10 concentration of weaned piglets fed FSBM was higher (p < 0.05), while IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations were lower (p < 0.05). Dietary FSBM replacement attenuated the increase of plasma TNF-α concentration and the decrease of ADG induced by ETEC K88 challenge (p < 0.05). High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene V4 region of cecal microbiota revealed that ETEC K88 challenge increased (p < 0.05) Campylobacter relative abundance on genus level. Dietary FSBM replacement resulted in higher (p < 0.05) relative abundances of Bacteroidetes and Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, and lower (p < 0.05) relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Actinobacillus. Furthermore, dietary FSBM replacement relieved the increase of Escherichia-Shigella relative abundance in weaned piglets challenged by ETEC K88 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Dietary FSBM replacement improved growth performance and alleviated the diarrhea of weaned piglets challenged with ETEC K88, which could be due to modulation of cecal microbiota composition and down-regulation of inflammatory cytokines production.

Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) is a bioactive lipid constituent of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL). It regulates various cellular functions, including migration of circulating monocytes, expression of endothelial adhesion molecules, proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). LPC can also be hydrolyzed into lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) by autotaxin (ATX) which possesses lysophospholipase D (lyso-PLD) activity. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of LPC on proliferation and migration of human artery smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) and the involvement of LPC-ATX-LPA pathway in these processes. In vitro, we found that LPC and LPA stimulated HASMCs proliferation and migration. Knockdown of LPA1 by siRNA and inhibit Gi protein with pertussis toxin (PTX) showed the contrary results. Silencing of LPC receptor genes did not significantly affect the LPC induced proliferation and migration. We detected the higher expressed mRNA and protein of ATX in HASMCs, and measured lyso-PLD activity. In atherosclerotic rabbit model, we observed high LPC level and high lyso-D activity in blood, and high expression of LPA1 in aorta walls. We also found that neointima appeared to be thickened and mRNA expressions of LPA1 appeared to be increased. These results revealed that LPC was converted into LPA by ATX to induce the proliferation and migration in HASMCs through LPA1/Gi/o/MAP Kinase signaling pathway. Our research suggested that LPC-ATX-LPA system contributed to the atherogenic action induced by ox-LDL. LPA1 antagonist may be considered as a potential therapeutic and preventative drug for cardiovascular disease.

Accurate identification of porcine cough plays a vital role in comprehensive respiratory health monitoring and diagnosis of pigs. It serves as a fundamental prerequisite for stress-free animal health management, reducing pig mortality rates, and improving the economic efficiency of the farming industry. Creating a representative multi-source signal signature for porcine cough is a crucial step toward automating its identification. To this end, a feature fusion method that combines the biological features extracted from the acoustic source segment with the deep physiological features derived from thermal source images is proposed in the paper. First, acoustic features from various domains are extracted from the sound source signals. To determine the most effective combination of sound source features, an SVM-based recursive feature elimination cross-validation algorithm (SVM-RFECV) is employed. Second, a shallow convolutional neural network (named ThermographicNet) is constructed to extract deep physiological features from the thermal source images. Finally, the two heterogeneous features are integrated at an early stage and input into a support vector machine (SVM) for porcine cough recognition. Through rigorous experimentation, the performance of the proposed fusion approach is evaluated, achieving an impressive accuracy of 98.79% in recognizing porcine cough. These results further underscore the effectiveness of combining acoustic source features with heterogeneous deep thermal source features, thereby establishing a robust feature representation for porcine cough recognition.

Sodium butyrate (SB), an essential nutritional additive for livestock, has drawn notable interest for its potential for enhancing microbiota development in ruminant animals. This study aimed to assess SB's effects on ruminal and intestinal microbiota when added to milk for preweaning dairy calves nearing 45 days old. We administered SB in the calves' milk at four levels: 0 g/d (control), 4.4 g/d (low), 8.8 g/d (medium), and 17.6 g/d (high). After a six-week trial with ten replicates per group, ruminal fluid and fecal samples were collected for 16S rRNA sequencing, specifically targeting the V3-V4 regions to analyze microbiota. The results indicated an enhancement in ruminal microbiota, particularly in community richness, with low-level SB supplementation but minimal benefits from medium and high levels of supplementation. Increasing the level of SB supplementation had a negative impact on intestinal microbiota, affecting community richness and some potentially beneficial bacterial genera. However, low SB supplementation could positively adjust the communication between ruminal and intestinal microbiota. Overall, this study suggests feeding milk supplemented with a low level of SB to suckling calves close to an older age to promote ruminal microbiota development.

Both larvae and adults of the Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata feed on leaves of potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. Given the variation in planting times of host plants in the Jianghan Plain, host switching between larvae and adults of H. vigintioctopunctata is inevitable to ensure continuous food availability. We evaluated the effect of consistent versus diverse larval and adult host plant feeding experience on growth performance, fecundity, longevity, and feeding preferences of H. vigintioctopunctata through match-mismatch experiments. Host plant quality significantly influences larval development and adult reproduction. Potatoes are identified as the optimal host plant for H. vigintioctopunctata, whereas eggplants significantly negatively affect the adult fecundity. Adult stage host feeding experience determines the fecundity of H. vigintioctopunctata, irrespective of the larval feeding experience. The fecundity of H. vigintioctopunctata adults on eggplant leaves remains significantly lower than that observed on potato leaves. Similarly, adult H. vigintioctopunctata demonstrate a preference for consuming potato leaves, irrespective of the larval feeding experience. Although host switching between larval and adult stages offers lesser benefits for the performance of herbivorous insects compared to a consistent diet with potato leaves, it maintains H. vigintioctopunctata population continuity amidst shortages of high-quality potato hosts.

The automated recognition of individual cows is foundational for implementing intelligent farming. Traditional methods of individual cow recognition from an overhead perspective primarily rely on singular back features and perform poorly for cows with diverse orientation distributions and partial body visibility in the frame. This study proposes an open-set method for individual cow recognition based on spatial feature transformation and metric learning to address these issues. Initially, a spatial transformation deep feature extraction module, ResSTN, which incorporates preprocessing techniques, was designed to effectively address the low recognition rate caused by the diverse orientation distribution of individual cows. Subsequently, by constructing an open-set recognition framework that integrates three attention mechanisms, four loss functions, and four distance metric methods and exploring the impact of each component on recognition performance, this study achieves refined and optimized model configurations. Lastly, introducing moderate cropping and random occlusion strategies during the data-loading phase enhances the model's ability to recognize partially visible individuals. The method proposed in this study achieves a recognition accuracy of 94.58% in open-set scenarios for individual cows in overhead images, with an average accuracy improvement of 2.98 percentage points for cows with diverse orientation distributions, and also demonstrates an improved recognition performance for partially visible and randomly occluded individual cows. This validates the effectiveness of the proposed method in open-set recognition, showing significant potential for application in precision cattle farming management.

The present study evaluated the effects of sodium butyrate (SB) supplementation on exocrine and endocrine pancreatic development in dairy calves. Fourteen male Holstein calves were alimented with either milk or milk supplemented with SB for 70 days. Pancreases were collected for analysis including staining, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, qRT-PCR, Western blotting, and proteomics. Results indicated increased development in the SB group with increases in organ size, protein levels, and cell growth. There were also exocrine enhancements manifested as higher enzyme activities and gene expressions along with larger zymogen granules. Endocrine benefits included elevated gene expression, more insulin secretion, and larger islets, indicating a rise in ß-cell proliferation. Proteomics and pathway analyses pinpointed the G protein subunit alpha-15 as a pivotal factor in pancreatic and insulin secretion pathways. Overall, SB supplementation enhances pancreatic development by promoting its exocrine and endocrine functions through G protein regulation in dairy calves.

In order to solve the problem of backward talent training mode in agriculture-related colleges and universities, this paper proposed a scheme to build a smart teaching platform by using cloud architecture, combining virtualization and twinning technology. The intelligent teaching platform is developed using the 5G converged network architecture and cloud edge system architecture. The intelligent teaching platform has realized such teaching modes as real scene teaching, combination of virtual and real teaching, immersive teaching, multi-teacher collaborative teaching and live interactive teaching. The smart teaching platform has established a new model of digital education, with the functions of teaching, teaching research, teaching management and teaching evaluation, and provides smart teaching cloud services for teachers and students of agriculture-related colleges and universities as well as external tutors. The research of multi-dimensional evaluation system solves the precise management of teaching process. The teaching effect has been significantly improved, and the management cost has been reduced, which meets the goal of training new agricultural talents in agricultural and forestry colleges.

Feruloyl oligosaccharides (FOs) were produced by solid-state fermentation of wheat bran using Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and its antioxidant activity was investigated using IPEC-J2 cells and zebrafish embryo model. Preliminary structure analysis revealed that FOs has an average molecular weight of 11.81 kDa and consists of mannose, ribose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, xylose, arabinose, and fucose. The obtained FOs possess superior reducing power and DPPH and hydroxyl free radical scavenging activities. In IPEC-J2 cells, antioxidant enzymes activities and GSH level were significantly increased, while MDA level was reduced by FOs. Further studies showed that FOs achieved the aforementioned effects by activating Nrf2 signaling pathway. In zebrafish embryo, FOs effectively suppressed ROS production, lipid peroxidation, and cell death by increasing SOD and GSH-Px activities. Our findings suggested that FOs from solid-state fermented wheat bran with mixed bacteria can be used as an antioxidant food additive or drugs.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of sodium butyrate (SB) supplementation on the growth and intestinal microbiota of preweaning dairy calves. Eighty newborn Holstein calves (56 female and 24 male) were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with 20 calves each (14 female and 6 male). The suckling milk for the four treatments was supplemented with 0, 4.4, 8.8, or 17.6 g/d SB. During the 6-week experiment, dry matter intake was recorded daily, body weight was measured weekly, and rectal fecal samples were collected in the 2nd week. The V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the microbial 16S rRNA were amplified and then sequenced. SB supplementation elevated average daily gains (ADGs) in the first and second weeks. The optimal SB supplementation level for the whole preweaning period was 8.78 g/d, as revealed by analyzing the whole preweaning period ADG using second-order polynomial regression (quadratic) equations. The alpha diversity (Shannon diversity index), beta diversity, core phyla and genera, and function of the intestinal microbiota were affected by SB supplementation. In addition, the Shannon diversity index and core phyla and genera of the intestinal microbiota were correlated with calf growth-related indices. Overall, SB supplementation in suckling milk improved the growth performance and intestinal microbiota development of dairy calves in a quadratic manner, and regression analysis indicated an optimal supplementation level of 8.78 g/d.

We investigated the effects of CEC on the fermentation characteristics, epithelial gene expression, and bacterial community in the rumen of lambs fed a high-concentrate diet. Twenty-four 3-month-old female crossbred lambs with an initial body weight of 30.37 ± 0.57 kg were randomly allocated to consume a diet supplemented with 80 mg/kg CEC (CEC) or not (CON). The experiment consisted of a 14 d adaptation period and a 60 d data collection period. Compared with the CON group, the CEC group had higher ADG, epithelial cell thickness, ruminal butyrate proportion, and lower ammonia nitrogen concentration. Increases in the mRNA expression of Occludin and Claudin-4, as well as decreases in the mRNA expression of apoptotic protease activating factor-1 (Apaf-1), cytochrome c (Cyt-C), Caspase-8, Caspase-9, Caspase-3, Caspase-7, and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), were observed in the CEC group. Moreover, CEC treatment also decreased the concentration of IL-1ß, IL-12, and TNF-α. Supplementation with CEC altered the structure and composition of the rumen bacterial community, which was indicated by the increased relative abundances of Firmicutes, Synergistota, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Olsenella, Schwartzia, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG-002, Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20_group, Acetitomaculum, [Eubacterium]_ruminantium_group, Prevotellaceae_UCG-004, Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Sphaerochaeta, Pyramidobacter, and [Eubacterium]_eligens_group, and the decreased relative abundances of Acidobacteriota, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadota, and MND1. Furthermore, Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the altered rumen bacteria were closely correlated with rumen health-related indices. Dietary CEC supplementation improved growth performance, reduced inflammation and apoptosis, protected barrier function, and modulated the bacterial community of lambs fed a high-concentrate diet.

There is growing interest in the utilization of plant polysaccharides for the modulation of the rumen bacterial community and enhancement of growth performance in ruminants. Fermented wheat bran polysaccharides (FWBPs), plant polysaccharides, have been shown to improve the growth performance of lambs, but little is known about their effect on rumen bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of FWBPs supplementation to milk replacer (MR) on the growth performance, blood metabolites, weight and morphology of rumen, rumen fermentation, and rumen bacterial community which were investigated in lambs. Twelve 1.5-month-old crossbred lambs (Dorper × Small-tailed Han Sheep) with an initial body weight (BW) of 11.38 ± 0.19 kg were randomly divided into two groups, namely, the control group and FWBPs group. Compared with the control group, the FWBPs group had a higher average daily weight gain and serum total protein concentrations, and a lower feed: gain ratio. A tendency of increase in final BW and carcass BW was also observed. Administration of FWBPs increased the ruminal papillae width and ruminal butyrate proportion and decreased the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and the proportion of isobutyrate and isovalerate. In addition, the epithelial cell thickness had an increased trend in the FWBPs group. High-throughput sequencing data showed that the relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20_group and Solobacterium was enhanced by FWBP treatment; meanwhile, the relative abundance of NK4A214_group, Megasphaera, and Treponema showed a tendency to be higher than that of the control group. Furthermore, Spearman's correlation analysis revealed that the relative abundances of NK4A214_group, Treponema, and Lachnospiraceae_NK3A20_group were positively correlated with butyrate proportion. Collectively, FWBPs supplementation to MR on lambs altered the rumen bacterial community, promoted rumen development, and improved growth performance.

In this paper, numerical investigation and optimization is conducted upon an improved updraft gasifier which is expected to overcome the weakness of conventional updraft gasifier. The comprehensive Aspen Plus model of the improved updraft gasifier is based on the RYield and RCSTR reactor. The tar prediction model is constructed, and the yield of tar is determined by the volatile of biomass and gasification temperature. The Aspen Plus simulation results agree very well with experiment results for the product yields and gasification efficiency, which shows the accuracy of the Aspen Plus model. The tar content in syngas of the improved gasifier is proved to be much lower than that of the conventional one by this model. The inflection point of the gasification efficiency occurs when air ratio is 0.25, and the optimum steam proportion in the air is 7.5%. Such a comprehensive investigation could provide necessary information for the optimal design and operation of the improved updraft gasifier.
