BACKGROUND: Studies show that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can play a role in malignancy and increase the risk of gastric cancer (GC). The objective of this research was to pinpoint genes whose expression may be influenced by EBV and play a role in the development of GC. METHODS: Candidate genes potentially susceptible to expression modulation in the presence of EBV were identified through the analysis of GSE185627 and GSE51575 datasets. The association of candidate genes with GC and the survival rate of patients was investigated based on the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) data. Also, pathways related to candidate genes were examined through the MsigDB database. The PPI network was used to identify Hub genes. To corroborate the obtained results, we utilized the RT-qPCR method, employing GC samples from both EBV + and EBV-cases, as well as adjacent normal samples. RESULTS: Our results showed that genes upregulated by the EBV in the GC cell line, as well as in EBV + samples, are significantly linked to pathways involving the immune response, inflammation, and the P53 pathway. Conversely, genes downregulated by EBV are closely linked to pathways involving cell proliferation and mTORC1. Examining the candidate genes revealed that a considerable portion of genes susceptible to downregulation under the influence of EBV exhibit oncogenic roles based on TCGA data. Moreover, some of these genes are associated with an unfavorable prognosis. Protein-protein interaction network analysis of candidate genes highlighted IFI44L and OAS2 as potential hub genes in the EBV-GC axis. Our RT-qPCR results further validated these findings, demonstrating that the expression levels of IFI44L and OAS2 were higher in EBV + samples compared to both healthy and EBV-samples. CONCLUSION: Our study underscores the capacity of EBV to exert regulatory control over genes associated with GC malignancy. In addition to its inflammatory effects, EBV elicits transcriptomic changes that appear to attenuate the progression of GC.

Salmonellosis, a zoonotic disease, is one of the leading causes of foodborne illness worldwide. It is responsible for most infections caused by consumption of contaminated food. In recent years, a significant increase in the resistance of these bacteria to common antibiotics has been observed, posing a serious threat to global public health. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of virulent antibiotic-resistant Salmonella spp. strains in Iranian poultry markets. A total of 440 chicken meat samples were randomly selected from meat supply and distribution facilities in Shahrekord and tested for bacteriological contamination. After culturing and isolating the strains, identification was performed using the classical bacteriological method and PCR. To determine antibiotic resistance, a disc diffusion test was performed according to the recommendations of the French Society of Microbiology. PCR was used to detect resistance and virulence genes. Only 9% of the samples were positive for Salmonella. These were Salmonella typhimurium isolates. All Salmonella typhimurium serotypes tested positive for the rfbJ, fljB, invA and fliC genes. Resistance to TET, cotrimoxazole, NA, NIT, piperacillin/tazobactam and other antibiotics was found in 26 (72.2%), 24 (66.7%), 22 (61.1%) and 21 (58.3%) isolates, respectively. The sul1, sul2 and sul3 genes were present in 20, 12 and 4 of 24 cotrimoxazole-resistant bacteria, respectively. Chloramphenicol resistance was found in six isolates, but more isolates tested positive for the floR and cat two genes. In contrast, 2 (33%) of the cat three genes, 3 (50%) of the cmlA genes and 2 (34%) of the cmlB genes were all positive. The results of this investigation showed that Salmonella typhimurium is the most common serotype of the bacterium. This means that most of the antibiotics commonly used in the livestock and poultry industries are ineffective against most Salmonella isolates, which is important for public health.

In Iran, dairy-based fermented foods, like yogurt, cheese, fermented milk, buttermilk, kashk, butter, and Doogh are essential dietary components. Doogh is typically made using fermented yogurt or buttermilk. However, a literature review revealed a lack of research on extracting probiotics from Doogh during processing. As dairy products contain lactic acid bacteria, the aim was to isolate and identify them using culture and PCR-sequencing techniques. Samples of traditional Doogh were collected throughout the Chaharmahal Bakhtiari province of Iran. A specific number of strains have been isolated and among them, the strain LB12 was selected for further characterization based on its probiotic properties. Probiotic properties like adhesion capability, antagonistic activity, resistance to the simulated stomach and intestinal fluids, pH, and bile salt were assessed according to National Standard ISO 19459 of Iran. The LB12 strain was identified as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei by partial 16 rDNA sequence analysis. This L. paracasei strain demonstrated its in vitro resilience to stomach conditions with 58.04% survival at pH 3 and more than 50% resistance to different bile salt concentrations. L. paracasei LB12 showed a cell surface hydrophobicity of 38.18% and a 6.2 log CFU/ml resistance to simulated gastric and intestinal fluids, and a rate of auto- and co-aggregation of 15% and 22%, respectively. L. parasei LB12 showed also a moderate adhesion to HT-29 cell line. In conclusion, L. paracasei LB12 is considered a promising potential probiotic suitable for the development of food supplement and pharmaceutical products.

Spices and herbs are potential vectors for virulent and pathogenic micro-organisms, which cause illness in consumers, contribute to spoilage, and reduce the durability of foodstuffs. The present study aims to provide relevant data about virulence and antibiotic resistance of Bacillus cereus isolated from various spices. A total of 200 samples of 8 types of spices (black pepper, chilli, white pepper, cumin, cinnamon, turmeric, curry powder, and sumac) were collected from various markets, retail shops, and sucuk production premises located in the Isfahan province of Iran. Presumptive B. cereus strains were obtained using Bacara Agar plates after enrichment in saline peptone water and final colonies were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Enterotoxin (HBL) and nonhaemolytic enterotoxin (NHE) production were assessed using the Duopath® Cereus Enterotoxins Test kit. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was applied as antibiotics susceptibility test. PCR was used to detect Emetic toxin gene (CES and CER) and enterotoxigenic toxin gene (cytK, nheA, hblC, and entFM). Results show a significant prevalence of B. cereus (42%) in spices. However, the spices meet food safety recommendations (<104 cfu/g). Antibiotics susceptibility test show alarming rate of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics specially ampicillin (83.33%) and penicillin (82.14%). Concerning the toxin producing capacity more than half of the isolates (51.19%) produce NHE toxin and 27.38% produce HBL toxin. The most abundant gene were nheA, nheB, and nheC and a combination of 4 genes (entFM, nheA, hblC, and cytK) was detected in many isolates. In conclusion, the presence of multidrug resistant B. cereus strains carrying diarrhoeal toxin-encoding genes in spices intended for human consumption represents a serious health hazard. These results indicate the need for regular surveillance of the occurrence of B. cereus strains in spices and food products in Iran.

This paper introduces the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method to be applied in explaining inequality in health outcome across any two groups. In order to understand every aspect of the inequality, multiple regression model can be used in a way to decompose the inequality into contributing factors. The method can therefore be indicated to what extent of the difference in mean predicted outcome between two groups is due to differences in the levels of observable characteristics (acceptable and fair). Assuming the identical characteristics in the two groups, the remaining inequality can be due to differential effects of the characteristics, maybe discrimination, and unobserved factors that not included in the model. Thus, using the decomposition methods can identify the contribution of each particular factor in moderating the current inequality. Accordingly, more detailed information can be provided for policy-makers, especially concerning modifiable factors. The method is theoretically described in detail and schematically presented. In the following, some criticisms of the model are reviewed, and several statistical commands are represented for performing the method, as well. Furthermore, the application of it in the health inequality with an applied example is presented.

Salinity is a major abiotic stress that adversely affects turfgrass growth. Clinoptilolite zeolite, a silicon (Si)-rich mineral, may allow these plants to cope with salinity. Therefore, in the present study, the effects of ordinary clinoptilolite zeolite (OZ) and potassium-enriched clinoptilolite zeolite (K-EZ) on the growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were assessed under salinity stress. Perennial ryegrass seeds were cultured in soil mixtures amended, or not, with OZ or K-EZ, then exposed to three salinity levels (0, 50 or 100 mM NaCl) for three months. Control plants were grown in the same soil mixture without zeolites, but not exposed to salinity. In salinity, the application of both types of zeolite significantly decreased Na content by 44.36% and 21.31%, but increased K content by 272.34% and 81.59%, as well as the K/Na ratio by 590.47% and 129.43%, in shoots and roots, respectively, compared to the no-zeolite treatment. Similarly, Si content in shoots increased by 28.33%. Amending the soil mixture with zeolite, especially K-EZ, enhanced relative water content, membrane stability index, total chlorophyll content, total soluble proteins, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities but reduced the contents of total soluble carbohydrates, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde in saline conditions. Shoot and root dry weight, root volume and root/shoot ratio also improved. Soil amendment with both forms of zeolite, as a Si-rich mineral, partially offset the negative impacts of salinity on perennial ryegrass, although K-EZ had more noticeable positive and beneficial effects. The amendment of growth media with zeolite may be an effective sustainable management practice for turfgrass used in landscaping and sports fields exposed to saline water.

BACKGROUND: According to latest available data there are more of 300,000 people injects drug users (PWID) in Iran. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we used a Blinder-Oaxaca (BO) decomposition to explore the relative contributions of inequality in utilization of NSPs and to decompose it to its determinants in Teheran. METHODS: We used data from a cross-sectional survey using snowball sampling to recruit 500 PWID from June to July 2016 in Tehran. Participants were reported injecting drug use in the past month, were able to speak and comprehend Farsi enough to respond to survey questions, and were able to provide informed consent to complete the interview. We used a BO method to decompose the role of economic inequality on utilization of needle and syringe programs. RESULTS: A total 520 of clients participated in the study of which data was fully complete for 500. The selected predictor variables (age, education level, marital status, homelessness, HIV risk perception, and HIV knowledge) together explain 54% (8.5% out of 16%) of total inequality in utilization of needle and syringe programs and the remaining 46% constitute the unexplained residual. HIV risk perception status contributed about 38% (3.3% out of 8.5%) to the total health inequality, followed by HIV knowledge (26%) and education level were contributed 20% each, respectively. CONCLUSION: The results showed that contribution of economic inequalities in utilization of NSPs was primarily explained by the differential effects of HIV risk perception and HIV knowledge among PWID. Reducing HIV risk perception and increasing HIV knowledge might be essential to efforts to eliminate inequalities in access to NSPs among PWID.

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between urbanization and risk factors of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) according to the World Health Organization stepwise approach to surveillance of NCDs. This study is part of a NCD risk factor surveillance of 10 069 individuals in all provinces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, aged over 20 years, during 2011. By utilizing 2011 census data, urbanization levels were determined in all provinces and logistics regression was used to examine the relationship between urbanization and risk factors. Among males, urbanization had a positive correlation with low physical activity (OR=1.7; 95% CI: 1.42-2.09), low fruit and vegetable consumption (OR=1.8; 95% CI: 1.09-2.96), and high BMI (OR=1.4; 95% CI: 1.20-1.70). Among females there was a positive and significant correlation with low physical activity (OR=1.2; 95% CI: 1.08-1.49), low fruit and vegetable consumption (OR=1.22; 95% CI: 0.78-1.91) and high BMI (OR=1.3; 95% CI: 1.14-1.53). Thus, urbanization has a significant correlation with increases in NCD factors in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

BACKGROUND: Up to now, fecal-oral and oral-oral are the most commonly known routes for transmission of H. pylori, therefore, contaminated water can play an important role in transmission of H. pylori to humans. Genotyping using virulence markers of H. pylori is one of the best approaches to study the correlations between H. pylori isolates from different samples. The present research was carried out to study the vacA, cagA, cagE, oipA, iceA and babA2 genotyping and antimicrobial resistance properties of H. pylori isolated from the bottled mineral water samples of Iran. RESULTS: Of 450 samples studied, 8 samples (1.77%) were contaminated with H. pylori. Brand C of bottled mineral water had the highest prevalence of H. pylori (3.63%). The bottled mineral water samples of July month had the highest levels of H. pylori-contamination (50%). H. pylori strains had the highest levels of resistance against metronidazole (62.5%), erythromycin (62.5%), clarithromycin (62.5%), amoxicillin (62.5%) and trimethoprim (62.5%). Totally, 12.5% of strains were resistant to more than 6 antibiotics. VvacAs1a (100%), vacAm1a (87.5%), cagA (62.5%), iceA1 (62.5%), oipA (25%), babA2 (25%) and cagE (37.5%) were the most commonly detected genotypes. M1as1a (62.5%), m1as2 (37.5%), m2s2 (37.5%) and S1a/cagA+/IceA2/oipA-/babA2-/cagE- (50%) were the most commonly detected combined genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: Contaminated bottled mineral water maybe the sources of virulent and resistant strains H. pylori. Careful monitoring of bottled mineral water production may reduce the risk of H. pylori transmission into the human population.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high clinical standing of Helicobacter pylori, its exact routes of transmission and origin have not been determined. Based on the contentious hypothesis, foods play an important roles in the transmission of H. pylori to humans. The present study was carried out to investigate the vacA, cagA, oipA and iceA genotypes status of H. pylori isolated from the various types of ready to eat foods. METHODS: A total of 550 ready to eat food samples were cultured and tested. H. pylori-positive strains were analyzed for the presence of various genotypes and antimicrobial resistance pattern. RESULTS: Seventy four out of 550 (13.45 %) samples were positive for H. pylori. Olvie salad (36 %), restaurant salad (30 %), fruit salad (28 %) and soup (22 %) were the most commonly contaminated. H. pylori strains harbored the highest levels of resistance against amoxicillin (94.59 %), ampicillin (93.24 %), metronidazole (89.18 %) and tetracycline (72.97 %). The most commonly detected genotypes were vacA s1a (78.37 %), vacA m2 (75.67 %), vacA m1a (51.35 %) and cagA (41.89 %). The prevalence of iceA1, iceA2 and oipA genotypes were 13.51, 4.05 and 18.91 %, respectively. S1am2 (70.27 %), s1am1a (39.18 %) and m1am2 (31.08 %) were the most commonly detected combined genotypes. Of 40 different genotypic combinations, s1a/cagA+/iceA1/oipA- (12.16 %), s1a/cagA+/iceA1/oipA+ (10.81 %) and s1a/cagA-/iceA1/oipA+ (10.81 %) were the most prevalent. CONCLUSIONS: The present investigation showed that some types of ready to eat food samples maybe the sources of resistant and virulent strains of H. pylori. Warily use of antibiotics with respect to the results of disk diffusion method and careful health monitoring on food and staffs of food producing companies maybe reduce the risk of H. pylori in foods.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the concentrations of lead, cadmium, and arsenic in the human milk, and to assess the effect of jujube fruit consumption by lactating mothers in reducing the concentration of these heavy metals in their milk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2014 among forty postpartum mothers in Isfahan, the second largest and polluted city in Iran. Mothers were randomized into two groups; the intervention group received 15 g/day of fresh jujube fruit, and the controls received routine care for 8 weeks. RESULTS: In the beginning, the concentrations of lead, cadmium, and arsenic were high, without significant difference between groups. The mean (standard deviation) concentrations of lead, cadmium, and arsenic were 29.49 (16.6), 4.65 (3.51), and 1.23 (0.63) µg/L, respectively. The smoothed empirical distribution of environmental pollutants showed that in both groups the mean values and variance of toxic metals decreased after 8 weeks, with a sharper decline in the intervention group. Quantile regression analysis showed that in the intervention group, lead concentration decreased by 2.54 µg/L at the 90th quintile, and cadmium decreased by 0.19 µg/Lat 75th quintile; without significant change in arsenic level. The corresponding figures were not significant in the control group. CONCLUSION: The concentrations of heavy metals were high in human milk, and the consumption of jujube fruit had some beneficial effects in reducing these harmful elements. Pregnant and lactating mothers should be advised to reduce their exposure to environmental pollutants, and consumption of some natural medicinal foods can be useful in reducing the concentration of pollutants in human milk. Because of numerous benefits of breast milk, in spite of the existence of some toxic trace elements, breastfeeding must be encouraged because such contaminants are also found in water and formula. The impact of the current findings on the primary prevention of chronic disease should be determined in future longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium difficile has been shown to be a nosocomial pathogen associated with diarrhoea and pseudomembranous colitis in hospitalised patients and the infection is believed to be acquired nosocomially. Recent studies have shown the occurrence of C. difficile in food animals which may act as a source of infection to humans.The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of C. difficile in retail raw beef, cow, sheep, goat, camel and buffalo meat in Iran. METHOD: From April to October 2012, a total of 660 raw meat samples from beef, cow, sheep, goat, camel and buffalo were purchased from 49 butcheries in Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces, Iran, and were evaluated for the presence of C. difficile using a method including selective enrichment in C. difficile broth, subsequent alcohol shock-treatment and plating onto C. difficile selective medium. C. difficile isolates were tested for the presence of toxin genes and were typed using PCR ribotyping. RESULTS: In this study, 13 of 660 meat samples (2%) were contaminated with C. difficile. The highest prevalence of C. difficile was found in buffalo meat (9%), followed by goat meat (3.3%), beef meat (1.7%), cow (0.94%) and sheep meat (0.9%). Seven of the 13C. difficile strains (53.9%) were positive for tcdA, tcdB and cdtB toxin genes and were classified as ribotype 078. Four strains (30.8%) were positive tcdA, and tcdB, and one strain (7.7%) was possessed only tcdB. The remaining isolate was non-toxigenic. Susceptibilities of 13C. difficile isolates were determined for 11 antimicrobial drugs using the disk diffusion assay. Resistance to clindamycin, gentamycin, and nalidixic acid was the most common finding. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, the present study is the first report of the isolation of C. difficile from raw buffalo meat. This study indicates the potential importance of food, including buffalo meat, as a source of transmission of C. difficile to humans.

In this survey the incidence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) contamination in some dairy products collected from the Iran market was investigated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. From February 2011 to February 2012, a total of 200 samples composed of yoghurt (60 samples), cheese (80 samples), and ice-cream (60 samples) showed that 75.5% of the tested samples were contaminated with various levels of AFM1 ranging from 14.3 to 572.1 ng/L. AFM1 was detected in 48 (80.0%) yoghurt samples (ranging from 19.7 to 319.4 ng/L), in 69 (86.3%) chesses samples (ranging from 14.3 to 572.1 ng/L) and in 34 (56.7%) of ice cream samples ranging from (ranging from14.9 to 147.4 ng/L). Eleven of cheese samples (13.8%) and three of yoghurt samples (5.0%) were higher that maximum tolerance limit accepted by European union/codex Alimentarius (250 ng/L). It was concluded that widespread occurrence of AFM1 in cheese samples was considered to be possible hazards for public health especially for children. This study suggests a regular monitoring of AFM1 in milk and milk products in the country.

Mercury and arsenic pollution has been recognized as a potential environmental and public health problem for over 40 years. The major source of exposure to mercury and arsenic for humans is the ingestion of sea food. Concentrations of mercury and arsenic in the muscle samples of green tiger shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus) from the Persian Gulf were determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Concentrations of metals in muscle samples were 49-115 µg kg(-1) for mercury, 115-131 µg kg(-1)for arsenic, with means of 82.7 and 251.6 µg kg(-1), respectively. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference of mercury and arsenic concentration in shrimp muscles between selected stations (Bushehr, Khuzestan, and Hormozgan provinces). No significant difference was found among heavy metal contents of male and female shrimps. The results of this study indicate that the green tiger shrimp from the Persian Gulf have concentrations well below the maximum permissible levels for mercury (500 µg kg(-1)) and arsenic (6000 µg kg(-1)), according to international standards, with no health risk of consumers.

1. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Arcobacter spp. isolated from different species of retail poultry meat in Iran. 2. From August 2012 to April 2013, a total of 540 raw poultry meat samples from chicken (n = 100), turkey (n = 100), quail (n = 100), partridge (n = 80), duck (n = 50), ostrich (n = 60) and geese (n = 50) were purchased from randomly selected retail outlets in Shahrekord, Isfahan, Sari and Rasht, Iran. 3. Using culture techniques, 71 of 540 poultry meat samples (13.1%) were positive for Arcobacter spp. The highest prevalence of Arcobacter spp. was found in chicken meat (28.0%), followed by quail (12.0%), duck (11.4%), turkey (11.0%), geese (8.0%), partridge (7.5%) and ostrich (3.3%) meat. The number of A. butzleri isolated from poultry meat samples (90.1%) was significantly higher than A. cryaerophilus (7.1%) and A. skirrowii (2.8%). Significantly more poultry meat samples were found to contain Arcobacter spp. by the PCR assay than by the culture method. 4. Susceptibilities of Arcobacter isolates were determined for 14 antimicrobial drugs using the disk diffusion method. All of the 71 Arcobacter isolates tested were resistant to one or more antimicrobial agents. Resistance to cephalothin and vancomycin (95.8%) was the most common finding, followed by resistance to methicillin, azithromycin and ampicillin. All Arcobacter isolates were susceptible to gentamicin, streptomycin, tetracyclin and kanamycin. 5. The results of this study indicated the importance of poultry meat, especially chicken meat, as potential sources of Arcobacter spp. infection in people. Furthermore, the strains indicated resistance to a broad spectrum of antibiotics.

Detection of species fraud in meat products is important for consumer protection and food industries. A molecular technique such as PCR method for detection of beef, sheep, pork, chicken, donkey, and horse meats in food products was established. The purpose of this study was to identification of fraud and adulteration in industrial meat products by PCR-RFLP assay in Iran. In present study, 224 meat products include 68 sausages, 48 frankfurters, 55 hamburgers, 33 hams and 20 cold cut meats were collected from different companies and food markets in Iran. Genomic DNA was extracted and PCR was performed for gene amplification of meat species using specific oligonucleotid primers. Raw meat samples are served as the positive control. For differentiation between donkey's and horse's meat, the mitochondrial DNA segment (cytochrome-b gene) was amplified and products were digested with AluI restriction enzyme. Results showed that 6 of 68 fermented sausages (8.82%), 4 of 48 frankfurters (8.33%), 4 of 55 hamburgers (7.27%), 2 of 33 hams (6.6%), and 1 of 20 cold cut meat (5%) were found to contain Haram (unlawful or prohibited) meat. These results indicate that 7.58% of the total samples were not containing Halal (lawful or permitted) meat and have another meat. These findings showed that molecular methods such as PCR and PCR-RFLP are potentially reliable techniques for detection of meat type in meat products for Halal authentication.

Background: Helicobacter pylori are the principal causative factor in the etiological factors of chronic, active, or type B gastritis; peptic and duodenal ulcers; stomach carcinoma; and epithelial tissue lymphoid malignancies. It infects more than half of the population worldwide. To reduce H. pylori production, pharmacological therapy of H. pylori diseases typically involves using threefold treatment methods. However, as a result of such therapy, antimicrobial resistance is commonly developed. Alternative therapeutics for H. pylori diseases are thus of particular interest. Methods: Thyme essential oils (EOs) obtained from T. caramanicus Jalas plants in Iran were tested for antibacterial activity against H. pylori obtained from 320 poultry specimens in this investigation. Antibacterial activity was measured using inhibition zones, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs). The impact of T. caramanicus Jalas essential oils on H. pylori isolate cagA, vacA, and babA2 gene expression was evaluated using a quantitative real-time PCR method (p < 0.05). Results: The chemical content of these EOs varied significantly according to chromatographic examination. Thymol, carvacrol, and terpinene-4-ol are the most abundant components in these EOs. H. pylori was recognized as a Helicobacter species with a 175-bp PCR product of 16S rRNA in 20/20 (100%). According to PCR results, all 20 (100%) isolates belonged to H. pylori. The EOs inhibited H. pylori in a dose-dependent manner, with T. caramanicus Jalas being the most effective, followed by pterygium EOs in decreasing order. At 8 mg/mL of T. caramanicus Jalas EOs, IZs against H. pylori were 27.4 ± 0.42 mm, and at 8 mg/mL of pterygium, IZs against H. pylori were 1 ± 0.02. T. caramanicus Jalas essential oils were used to treat all bacteria, and the findings showed that T. caramanicus Jalas had a substantial inhibitory impact on the expression of cagA, vacA, and babA2 virulence-related genes (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In a dose-dependent manner, the EOs of T. caramanicus Jalas EO demonstrated a high degree of antimicrobial property against H. pylori bacteria. The most efficient EOs were those from T. caramanicus Jalas with relative concentrations of thymol and carvacrol, followed by the coumarin-dominated pterygium EO with reduced antibacterial activity.

Studies have noted the association between Escherichia coli K-12 (E. coli K-12) and the reduction of malignancy in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this relationship have not been thoroughly explored. The aim of this study was to identify the genes influenced by E. coli K-12 and their connection to CRC. We identified the genes affected by E. coli K-12 using the GSE50040 dataset. Additionally, we investigated the relationship between the expression of genes affected by E. coli K-12 and CRC using the cancer genome atlas data. The association between the expression of E. coli K-12-affected genes and patient prognosis was investigated using clinical data. Pathways related to CRC and E. coli K-12-related genes were analyzed using the Enrichr tool. Furthermore, we employed a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network to identify hub genes associated with both E. coli K-12 and CRC. To validate our findings, we conducted RT-qPCR analysis on CRC samples and adjacent normal tissue. The results of GSE50040 showed that E. coli K-12 could change the expression of many genes related to CRC in colorectal cell lines. The results showed that E. coli K-12 reduces the expression of several genes linked to the main pathways used by cancer cells, such as the metastasis, WNT, cell proliferation pathway, and mTORC1. It was demonstrated that elevated BGN, FJX1, and LZTS1 expression is linked to a bad prognosis in patients and that E. coli K-12 may be able to lower this expression. Also, based on the PPI network, genes such as KLF4 and CXCL3 were identified as hub genes related to genes affected by E. coli K-12. When KLF4 and CXCL3 expression levels in cancer samples were compared to nearby normal tissue, a significant change in these genes' expression levels was found in CRC. Our findings demonstrated the potential relationship between oncogene genes and genes impacted by E. coli K-12. Also, our findings demonstrated that E. coli K-12 may regulate the expression of genes linked to a high death rate. In summary, the results of this study suggest that E. coli K-12 can be regarded as a significant probiotic with the potential to mitigate the risk of CRC development.

Today, microbial contamination in food is one of the major problems of the food industry and public health in general around the world. Foodborne illnesses, such as diarrheal diseases, kill many people around the world each year. The general objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of sodium alginate nanoemulsion coating incorporated with oregano essential oil (Origanum vulgare L.) and Trachyspermum ammi oil (Carum cupticum) on Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes. To achieve this study, fresh chicken meat was used for this experiment. Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111 and Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 were obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (Manassas, VA, USA). After the preparation of the essential oil, the chemical composition of this essential oil was determined by using (GC-MS). The physicochemical properties of the nanoemulsion essential oil prepared were characterized and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The results showed that the GC-MS analysis of the volatile constituents of the Origanum vulgare essential oil compounds allowed the identification of 19 compounds representing 93.72% of the total oil. The major components detected in Origanum vulgare essential oil were pulegone (49.25%), eucalyptol (18.23%), and menthone (12.37%). About the Carum cupticum essential oil, 21 compounds representing 98.5% of the total oil were identified. The major components detected in Origanum vulgare essential oil were thymol (23.3%), p-cymene (17.5%), and γ-terpinene (16.8%). The best z-average (d.nm) is 483.4 nm (Carum cupticum essential oil + nano) followed by 470.1 nm (nanochitosan). The results of the antimicrobial test showed that the different preparations have a good inhibitory activity for the in vitro growth of Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. According to the MIC and MBC results of this study, the nanoemulsion also presented a good bacteriostatic activity against the two pathogenic bacteria tested in this study.

BACKGROUND: The quality of drinking water has an important role in human infection and disease. This study was aimed at comparing polymerase chain reaction and culture in detecting Escherichia coli, Salmonella species and Vibrio cholera in tape water and bottled drinking water in various seasons in Isfahan province, Iran. METHODS: A total of 448 water samples from tap water and bottled mineral water were taken over 6 months, from July 2010 to December 2010, and after filtration, samples were examined by culture and polymerase chain reaction methods for detection of Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, and Vibrio cholerae. RESULTS: The culture method showed that 34 (7.58%), 4 (0.89%) and 3 (0.66%) of all 448 water samples were positive for Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, and Vibrio cholera, respectively. The uidA gene from Escherichia coli, IpaB gene from Salmonella species, and epsM gene from Vibrio cholera were detected in 38 (26.38%), 5 (3.47%), and 3 (2.08%) of 144 tap-water samples, respectively. Escherichia coli was detected in 8 (2.63%) of 304 samples of bottled drinking water from 5 companies. The water of southern part of Isfahan and company 5 had the highest prevalence of bacteria. The Escherichia coli water contamination was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the hot seasons (July-August) than cold (November-December) seasons and in company 5 than other companies. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) for the prevalence of bacteria between the tap waters of southern part and tap waters of central part of Isfahan. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the polymerase chain reaction assays can be an extremely accurate, fast, safe, sensitive and specific approach to monitor drinking water quality from purification facilities and bottled water companies. Also, our study confirmed the presence of Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, and Vibrio cholerae as water-borne pathogens in tap water and bottled drinking water of Isfahan, Iran. The present study showed the important public health problem in Isfahan, Iran.
