Molecular and functional abnormalities of astrocytes have been implicated in the etiology and pathogenesis of schizophrenia (SCZ). In this study, we examined the proteome, inflammatory responses, and secretome effects on vascularization of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived astrocytes from patients with SCZ. Proteomic analysis revealed alterations in proteins related to immune function and vascularization. Reduced expression of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) p65 subunit was observed in these astrocytes, with no incremental secretion of cytokines after tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) stimulation. Among inflammatory cytokines, secretion of interleukin (IL)-8 was particularly elevated in SCZ-patient-derived-astrocyte-conditioned medium (ASCZCM). In a chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay, ASCZCM reduced the diameter of newly grown vessels. This effect could be mimicked with exogenous addition of IL-8. Taken together, our results suggest that SCZ astrocytes are immunologically dysfunctional and may consequently affect vascularization through secreted factors.

Wearing facial masks became a common practice worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated (1) whether facial masks that cover adult faces affect 4- to 6-year-old children's recognition of emotions in those faces and (2) whether the duration of children's exposure to masks is associated with emotion recognition. We tested children from Switzerland (N = 38) and Brazil (N = 41). Brazil represented longer mask exposure due to a stricter mandate during COVID-19. Children had to choose a face displaying a specific emotion (happy, angry, or sad) when the face wore either no cover, a facial mask, or sunglasses. The longer hours of mask exposure were associated with better emotion recognition. Controlling for the hours of exposure, children were less likely to recognise emotions in partially hideen faces. Moreover, Brazilian children were more accurate in recognising happy faces than Swiss children. Overall, facial masks may negatively impact children's emotion recognition. However, prolonged exposure appears to buffer the lack of facial cues from the nose and mouth. In conclusion, restricting facial cues due to masks may impair kindergarten children's emotion recognition in the short run. However, it may facilitate their broader reading of facial emotional cues in the long run.

Cacti are a distinguished group of plants that stand out for their great nutritional values, diverse uses, and unique morphology, allowing them to grow and thrive under different conditions such as dry, xeric, and even low-temperature environments. The world is going through significant climate changes that are affecting the agriculture system. Therefore, sustainable and multifunctional crops, as many species of the Cactaceae family are, might be a good alternative in the near future. In this work, the uses of cacti in human food were analyzed through a scientific prospection from the point of view of their temporal and spatial distribution and potential uses. Brazil is the country with more publications related to the scope of this work, followed by Mexico. The presence of cacti in these countries can influence their interest in these species, which might reflect the results encountered in this study. The uses and ethnobotanical applications of cacti vary in different countries worldwide. Cactus is consumed fresh (in salads), in preparations (jams and sweets), and juices, being also present in traditional dishes in countries like Mexico. This study emphasizes cacti's importance in people's diets and ongoing world changes. Their ability to thrive even in hot environments with low water resources will lead to a greater focus on these species in the upcoming years. Furthermore, these plants have great flavor and contain several beneficial chemical compounds with desirable nutritional and health properties. Therefore, knowledge dissemination combined with technological innovations will allow greater use of these multifunctional species for human consumption. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The application of oils in the food industry is challenging, owing to their inherent factors such as oxidation. Therefore, new technologies, such as nanoencapsulation, are being developed. Among the nanoencapsulated oils, essential oils (EO) and edible oils stand out for their high consumer demand. This review analyzes the production, characterization, stability, and market scenario of edible and EO nanoparticles applied in foods. Homogenization was found to be the most common technique for producing oil nanoparticles. Different encapsulants were used, and Tween 80 was the main emulsifier. Approximately 80% of the nanoparticles were smaller than 200 nm, and the polydispersibility index and zeta potential values were satisfactory, mainly for nanoparticles containing EO, whereas encapsulation efficiency varied based on the technique and the type of oil used. Oil nanoparticles were mainly applied on meat products. The temperatures and times used in the stability tests of foods containing oil nanoparticles varied depending on the food matrix, especially in microbiological and physicochemical analyses. Only one product with nanoencapsulated oil in its composition was found in the market. Oil nanoparticles have great potential in the development of innovative, economically viable, and sustainable techniques for producing new food products that are high in nutrition value.

The Cactaceae family can be easily found in the arid and semiarid regions, with a significant waste of its potentials, being generally used as forage. Considering that much research have shown antioxidant properties and bioactive compounds in cacti species, this review aimed to review and discuss recent advances in physicochemical composition, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activity of Cereus jamacaru, Melocactus zehntneri, Pilosocereus gounellei, Opuntia ficus-indica and Pilosocereus pachycladus fruits to investigate their food technology potential for new products development. These fruits have important amounts of micro, macronutrients, and bioactive compounds, which allow them a wide variety of uses, fresh or processed, and for industrial purposes for the production and extraction of compounds of interest (dyes, antioxidants, antimicrobials, etc.) as demonstrated in the literature. Furthermore, exploring the diversity of uses of these fruits can provide significant benefits from an economic, technological, social, environment, food, and nutritional security point of view.

Citrus huanglongbing (HLB) caused by 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas) is the most devastating citrus disease worldwide. Most commercial citrus cultivars are susceptible to HLB, with a few more tolerant exceptions such as 'LB8-9' Sugar Belle mandarin. Transcriptomic analyses have been widely used to investigate the potential mechanisms for disease susceptibility, resistance, or tolerance. Previous transcriptomic studies related to HLB mostly focused on single time point data collection. We hypothesize that changes in day length and temperature throughout the seasons have profound effects on citrus-CLas interactions. Here, we conducted RNA-seq analyses on HLB-susceptible Valencia sweet orange and HLB-tolerant mandarin 'LB8-9' in winter, spring, summer, and fall. Significant variations in differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to HLB were observed among the four seasons. For both cultivars, the highest number of DEGs were found in the spring. CLas infection stimulates the expression of immune-related genes such as NBS-LRR, RLK, RLCK, CDPK, MAPK pathway, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and PR genes in both cultivars, consistent with the model that HLB is a pathogen-triggered immune disease. HLB-positive mandarin 'LB8-9' trees contained higher concentrations of maltose and sucrose, which are known to scavenge ROS. In addition, mandarin 'LB8-9' showed higher expression of genes involved in phloem regeneration, which might contribute to its HLB tolerance. This study shed light on the pathogenicity mechanism of the HLB pathosystem and the tolerance mechanism against HLB, providing valuable insights into HLB management.

Endosperm starch synthesis is a primary determinant of grain yield and is sensitive to high-temperature stress. The maize chloroplast-localized 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH), PGD3, is critical for endosperm starch accumulation. Maize also has two cytosolic isozymes, PGD1 and PGD2, that are not required for kernel development. We found that cytosolic PGD1 and PGD2 isozymes have heat-stable activity, while amyloplast-localized PGD3 activity is labile under heat stress conditions. We targeted heat-stable 6PGDH to endosperm amyloplasts by fusing the Waxy1 chloroplast targeting the peptide coding sequence to the Pgd1 and Pgd2 open reading frames (ORFs). These WPGD1 and WPGD2 fusion proteins import into isolated chloroplasts, demonstrating a functional targeting sequence. Transgenic maize plants expressing WPGD1 and WPGD2 with an endosperm-specific promoter increased 6PGDH activity with enhanced heat stability in vitro. WPGD1 and WPGD2 transgenes complement the pgd3-defective kernel phenotype, indicating the fusion proteins are targeted to the amyloplast. In the field, the WPGD1 and WPGD2 transgenes can mitigate grain yield losses in high-nighttime-temperature conditions by increasing kernel number. These results provide insight into the subcellular distribution of metabolic activities in the endosperm and suggest the amyloplast pentose phosphate pathway is a heat-sensitive step in maize kernel metabolism that contributes to yield loss during heat stress.

Conventional textile effluent treatments cannot remove methylene blue, a mutagenic azo dye, and an endocrine disruptor, that remains in the drinking water after conventional water treatment. However, the spent substrate from Lentinus crinitus mushroom cultivation, a waste, could be an attractive alternative to remove persistent azo dyes in water. The objective of this study was to assess the methylene blue biosorption by spent substrate from L. crinitus mushroom cultivation. The spent substrate obtained after mushroom cultivation had been characterized by the point of zero charge, functional groups, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the spent substrate biosorption capacity was determined in function of pH, time, and temperature. The spent substrate had a point of zero charge value of 4.3 and biosorbed 99% of methylene blue in pH from 3 to 9, with the highest biosorption in the kinetic assay of 15.92 mg g- 1, and in the isothermal assay of 120.31 mg g- 1. Biosorption reached equilibrium at 40 min after mixing and best fitted the pseudo-second-order model. Freundlich model best fitted the isothermal parameters and each 100 g spent substrate biosorbed 12 g dye in an aqueous solution. The spent substrate of L. crinitus cultivation is an effective biosorbent of methylene blue and an alternative to removing this dye from water, adding value to the mushroom production chain, and supporting the circular economy.

True vaginal prolapse is rare in bitches and is most likely to occur near whelping. A 2-year-old intact female Brazilian mastiff, 39.5 kg, had a true vaginal prolapse associated with urinary bladder retroflection; the female was in estrus, and concomitantly had diarrhea for 3 d, plus vaginal hyperplasia, and ultimately a vaginal prolapse. Ultrasound examination and retrograde urethrocystography were extremely important for detection and identification of the position (retroflection) of the urinary bladder within the prolapsed vagina. These tools, therefore, are recommended for a conclusive diagnosis and surgical planning, to avoid trans- and postoperative complications, e.g., urethral damage or bladder rupture. Prompt diagnosis and surgical correction enabled a favorable prognosis and rapid postoperative recovery, avoiding complications or ultimately death of the dog.


Prolapsus vaginal vrai associé à une rétroflexion de la vessie chez une chienne. Le prolapsus vaginal vrai est rare chez les chiennes et est plus susceptible de se produire près de la mise-bas. Une femelle dogue brésilien intacte de 2 ans, pesant 39,5 kg, a eu un prolapsus vaginal vrai associé à une rétroflexion de la vessie urinaire; la femelle était en oestrus et avait simultanément de la diarrhée pendant 3 jours, plus une hyperplasie vaginale et finalement un prolapsus vaginal. L'examen échographique et l'urétrocystographie rétrograde étaient extrêmement importants pour la détection et l'identification de la position (rétroflexion) de la vessie dans le vagin faisant prolapsus. Ces outils sont donc recommandés pour un diagnostic concluant et une planification chirurgicale, afin d'éviter les complications trans- et postopératoires, par exemple des lésions urétrales ou une rupture de la vessie. Un diagnostic rapide et une correction chirurgicale ont permis un pronostic favorable et une récupération postopératoire rapide, évitant les complications ou éventuellement le décès du chien.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Water bodies are containers that receive a large load of water quality variables through the release of domestic, industrial, and agricultural effluents. With this focus, this work aimed to conduct a temporal-spatial variability study in the Rio de Ondas Hydrographic Basin through multivariate statistical analysis. For this, seventeen collection sites were established in four stations along the Rio de Ondas and its tributaries between 2017 and 2018. Ionic chromatography with suppressed conductivity was used for ions determination, while ICP-OES determined metals' total concentrations. The land use and occupation assessment between 1985 and 2021 was using data from MapBiomas were used and the descriptive and multivariate analysis of the data using version free of the Statistica software. The results showed that, in 30 years, there was a growth of 569% of agricultural activities in the watershed area, with significant suppression of native vegetation, favoring the transport of contaminants to rivers. Ca2+, PO42-, Al, Cu, and Zn concentrations showed a statistically significant difference between the seasons, with higher medians in the rainy season. Rainy season influenced the formation of three groups in the PCA, consisting of electrical conductivity, salinity, TDS, and PO42- (group 1); temperature, Fe, SO42-, and Cl- (group 2); and Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and HCO3- (group 3). The strong correlation between parameters of each group indicates anthropic influence on the watershed's water quality. However, levels are within the potability standard.

Autoimmune regulator+ (Aire) medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) play a critical role in tolerance induction. Several studies demonstrated that Aire+ mTECs differentiate further into Post-Aire cells. Yet, the identification of terminal stages of mTEC maturation depends on unique fate-mapping mouse models. Herein, we resolve this limitation by segmenting the mTEChi (MHCIIhi CD80hi ) compartment into mTECA/hi (CD24- Sca1- ), mTECB/hi (CD24+ Sca1- ), and mTECC/hi (CD24+ Sca1+ ). While mTECA/hi included mostly Aire-expressing cells, mTECB/hi contained Aire+ and Aire- cells and mTECC/hi were mainly composed of cells lacking Aire. The differential expression pattern of Aire led us to investigate the precursor-product relationship between these subsets. Strikingly, transcriptomic analysis of mTECA/hi , mTECB/hi , and mTECC/hi sequentially mirrored the specific genetic program of Early-, Late- and Post-Aire mTECs. Corroborating their Post-Aire nature, mTECC/hi downregulated the expression of tissue-restricted antigens, acquired traits of differentiated keratinocytes, and were absent in Aire-deficient mice. Collectively, our findings reveal a new and simple blueprint to survey late stages of mTEC differentiation.

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumour in childhood, originated from cells of the neural crest during the development of the Sympathetic Nervous System. Retinoids are vitamin-A derived differentiating agents utilised to avoid disease resurgence in high-risk neuroblastoma treatment. Several studies indicate that hypoxia-a common feature of the tumoural environment-is a key player in cell differentiation and proliferation. Hypoxia leads to the accumulation of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). This work aims to investigate the effects of the selective inhibition of HIF-1α on the differentiation induced by retinoic acid in human neuroblastoma cells from the SH-SY5Y lineage to clarify its role in cell differentiation. Our results indicate that HIF-1α inhibition impairs RA-induced differentiation by reducing neuron-like phenotype and diminished immunolabeling and expression of differentiation markers. HIF1A is involved in Retinoic Acid (RA) induced differentiation in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. siRNA HIF1A gene silencing leads to a weaker response to RA, demonstrated by changes in the neuro-like phenotype and diminished expression of differentiation markers.

The health-disease process can be influenced by the intestinal microbiota. As this plays a fundamental role in protecting the organism, the importance of studying the composition and diversity of this community becomes increasingly evident. Changes in the composition of the intestinal bacterial community may result in dysbiosis, and this process may contribute to triggering various diseases in all biological systems. This imbalance of intestinal microbiota homeostasis may alter commensal bacteria and the host metabolism, as well as immune function. Dysbiosis also causes an increase in intestinal permeability due to exposure to molecular patterns associated with the pathogen and lipopolysaccharides, leading to a chronic inflammatory process that can result in diseases for all biological systems. In this context, dietary intervention through the use of probiotics, prebiotics and antioxidant foods can be considered a contribution to the modulation of intestinal microbiota. Probiotics have been used to provide up to 10 billion colony forming units, and probiotic foods, Kefir and fermented natural yogurt are also used. Prebiotics, in turn, are found in supplemental formulations of processed foods and in functional foods that are also sources of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. In this review, we will discuss the relationship between an imbalance in the intestinal microbiota with the development of diseases, besides indicating the need for future studies that can establish bacterial parameters for the gastrointestinal tract by modulating the intestinal microbiota, associated with the adoption of healthy habits during all life cycles.

Obesity is a health problem that has been associated with neuroinflammation, decreased cognitive functions and development of neurodegenerative diseases. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative condition characterized by motor and non-motor abnormalities, increased brain inflammation, α-synuclein protein aggregation and dopaminergic neuron loss that is associated with decreased levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the brain. Diet-induced obesity is a global epidemic and its role as a risk factor for PD is not clear. Herein, we showed that 25 weeks on a high-fat diet (HFD) promotes significant alterations in the nigrostriatal axis of Wistar rats. Obesity induced by HFD exposure caused a reduction in TH levels and increased TH phosphorylation at serine 40 in the ventral tegmental area. These effects were associated with insulin resistance, increased tumor necrosis factor-α levels, oxidative stress, astrogliosis and microglia activation. No difference was detected in the levels of α-synuclein. Obesity also induced impairment of locomotor activity, total mobility and anxiety-related behaviors that were identified in the open-field and light/dark tasks. There were no changes in motor coordination or memory. Together, these data suggest that the reduction of TH levels in the nigrostriatal axis occurs through an α-synuclein-independent pathway and can be attributed to brain inflammation, oxidative/nitrosative stress and metabolic disorders induced by obesity.

KEY MESSAGE: The temporal expression profiles of citrus leaves explain the sink-source transition of immature leaves to mature leaves and provide knowledge regarding the differential responses of mature and immature leaves to biotic stress such as citrus canker and Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri). Citrus is an important fruit crop worldwide. Different developmental stages of citrus leaves are associated with distinct features, such as differences in susceptibilities to pathogens and insects, as well as photosynthetic capacity. Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying these distinctions by comparing the gene expression profiles of mature and immature citrus leaves. Immature (stages V3 and V4), transition (stage V5), and mature (stage V6) Citrus sinensis leaves were chosen for RNA-seq analyses. Carbohydrate biosynthesis, photosynthesis, starch biosynthesis, and disaccharide metabolic processes were enriched among the upregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the V5 and V6 stages compared with that in the V3 and V4 stages. Glucose level was found to be higher in V5 and V6 than in V3 and V4. Among the four stages, the largest number of DEGs between contiguous stages were identified between V5 and V4, consistent with a change from sink to source, as well as with the sucrose and starch quantification data. The differential expression profiles related to cell wall synthesis, secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and terpenoids, amino acid biosynthesis, and immunity between immature and mature leaves may contribute to their different responses to Asian citrus psyllid infestation. The expression data suggested that both the constitutive and induced gene expression of immunity-related genes plays important roles in the greater resistance of mature leaves against Xanthomonas citri compared with immature leaves. The gene expression profiles in the different stages can help identify stage-specific promoters for the manipulation of the expression of citrus traits according to the stage. The temporal expression profiles explain the sink-source transition of immature leaves to mature leaves and provide knowledge regarding the differential responses to biotic stress.

Illicit drug use can cause a variety of effects including alterations in the immune system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of illicit drugs on circulating lipopolysaccharide (LPS), systemic inflammation and oxidative stress markers in drug users. We evaluated the levels of soluble CD14 (sCD14), LPS, inflammatory (TNF-α and IL-6) and regulatory (IL-10) cytokines, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP), lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and total thiols in the peripheral blood of 81 men included in groups of cannabis (n = 21), cocaine (n = 12), cannabis-plus-cocaine users (n = 27), and non-drug users (n = 21). The use of cannabis plus cocaine leads to higher systemic levels of LPS, CRP, IL-6 and higher IL-6/IL-10 ratio, characterizing a proinflammatory profile. In contrast, a regulatory profile as viewed by lower systemic TNF-α and IL-6 levels and lower TNF-α/IL-10 ratio were observed in cannabis users compared to the control group. Moreover, cocaine users presented a lower content of non-enzymatic antioxidant thiol compared to control group, cannabis group and cannabis plus cocaine group. In conclusion, our results indicate that the use of cannabis contributes to an anti-inflammatory/or regulatory profile while the concomitant cannabis plus cocaine consumption coexists with increased circulating amounts of LPS and proinflammatory status.

This study compared the effects of LED therapy associated with occlusal splint (OS) on the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). In this randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 70 TMD patients were randomly divided into six groups. The volunteers received the following treatments: Group 1 (G1) was the control and received only conventional therapy with OS; Group 2 (G2) was the placebo and received treatment with OS and therapy with LED (device turned off); Group 3 (G3) LED therapy (infrared,) once a week; Group 4 (G4) LED therapy (infrared) twice a week; Group 5 (G5) OS associated with LED (infrared) therapy (once a week); Group 6 (G6) received OS therapy plus infrared LED (two sessions per week). The patients were evaluated before, after, and 30 days after treatment. The pain intensity in masticatory system was recorded at each interval. The evaluation of the electromyographic signals (EMG) of the muscles (masseter and temporal) and blood lactate was performed before and after treatment. The associated groups presented better clinical results in relation to the control. The associated groups showed significant differences (p < 0.05) from control in the analysis of pain intensity and in decrease of the RMS value (EMG analysis). In the intragroup analysis, the volunteers in G6 exhibited a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in blood lactate. In conclusion, the association of LED therapy and OS presented superior results in relation to the isolated therapies, especially the protocol with two weekly sessions.

Most dyes used in the food industry are synthetic and can be a health hazard. Red tomato may serve as a natural alternative dye to replace synthetic colorants. This study aimed to review the literature on the addition of red tomato products (powder tomato, paste, freeze-dried, tomato peel powder, tomato pomace) to reduce the usage of synthetic dyes in the food industry. Red tomato products have been used as coloring in pasta, bologna, sausages, cookies, crackers, macaroons, hamburgers, breads, muffins, cheeses, and nuggets. The trans-cis isomerization of lycopene by oxidative processes directly affects the color of the pigment. The lycopene contained in tomato has antioxidant activity and could reduce or eliminate other oxidants and/or synthetic preservatives in food. Moreover, tomatoes in foods have high sensory scores, nutritional appeal, and marketing potential. However, its use as a food colorant has been not extensively explored. Therefore, further studies are still required, especially on the stability of carotenoids in tomatoes used in processed foods.

We aim to characterize the kinetics of early and late microglial phenotypes after systemic inflammation in an animal model of severe sepsis and the effects of minocycline on these phenotypes. Rats were subjected to CLP, and some animals were treated with minocycline (10 ug/kg) by i.c.v. administration. Animals were killed 24 hours, 5, 10 and 30 days after sepsis induction, and serum and hippocampus were collected for subsequent analyses. Real-time PCR was performed for M1 and M2 markers. TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, CCL-22 and nitrite/nitrate levels were measured. Immunofluorescence for IBA-1, CD11b and arginase was also performed. We demonstrated that early after sepsis, there was a preponderant up-regulation of M1 markers, and this was not switched to M2 phenotype markers later on. We found that up-regulation of both M1 and M2 markers co-existed up to 30 days after sepsis induction. In addition, minocycline induced a down-regulation, predominantly, of M1 markers. Our results suggest early activation of M1 microglia that is followed by an overlap of both M1 and M2 phenotypes and that the beneficial effects of minocycline on sepsis-associated brain dysfunction may be related to its effects predominantly on the M1 phenotype.

Cereal yields decrease when grain fill proceeds under conditions of prolonged, moderately elevated temperatures. Endosperm-endogenous processes alter both rate and duration of dry weight gain, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Heat effects could be mediated by either abnormal, premature cessation of storage compound deposition or accelerated implementation of normal development. This study used controlled environments to isolate temperature as the sole environmental variable during Zea mays kernel-fill, from 12 days after pollination to maturity. Plants subjected to elevated day, elevated night temperatures (38°C day, 28°C night (38/28°C])) or elevated day, normal night (38/17°C), were compared with those from controls grown under normal day and night conditions (28/17°C). Progression of change over time in endosperm tissue was followed to dissect contributions at multiple levels, including transcriptome, metabolome, enzyme activities, product accumulation, and tissue ultrastructure. Integrated analyses indicated that the normal developmental program of endosperm is fully executed under prolonged high-temperature conditions, but at a faster rate. Accelerated development was observed when both day and night temperatures were elevated, but not when daytime temperature alone was increased. Although transcripts for most components of glycolysis and respiration were either upregulated or minimally affected, elevated temperatures decreased abundance of mRNAs related to biosynthesis of starch and storage proteins. Further analysis of 20 central-metabolic enzymes revealed six activities that were reduced under high-temperature conditions, indicating candidate roles in the observed reduction of grain dry weight. Nonetheless, a striking overall resilience of grain filling in the face of elevated temperatures can be attributed to acceleration of normal endosperm development.
