RESUMEN

Somatic mutations in the ten-eleven translocation methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 gene (TET2) have been associated to hematologic malignancies. More recently, biallelic, and monoallelic germline mutations conferring susceptibility to lymphoid and myeloid cancer have been described. We report two unrelated autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome-like patients who presented with T-cell lymphoma associated with novel germline biallelic or monoallelic mutations in the TET2 gene. Both patients presented a history of chronic lymphoproliferation with lymphadenopathies and splenomegaly, cytopenias, and immune dysregulation. We identified the first compound heterozygous patient for TET2 mutations (P1) and the first ALPS-like patient with a monoallelic TET2 mutation (P2). P1 had the most severe form of autosomal recessive disease due to TET2 loss of function resulting in absent TET2 expression and profound increase in DNA methylation. Additionally, the immunophenotype showed some alterations in innate and adaptive immune system as inverted myeloid/plasmacytoid dendritic cells ratio, elevated terminally differentiated effector memory CD8 + T-cells re-expressing CD45RA, regulatory T-cells, and Th2 circulating follicular T-cells. Double-negative T-cells, vitamin B12, and IL-10 were elevated according to the ALPS-like suspicion. Interestingly, the healthy P1's brother carried a TET2 mutation and presented some markers of immune dysregulation. P2 showed elevated vitamin B12, hypergammaglobulinemia, and decreased HDL levels. Therefore, novel molecular defects in TET2 confirm and expand both clinical and immunological phenotype, contributing to a better knowledge of the bridge between cancer and immunity.

BACKGROUND: Awake prone positioning (APP) reduces the intubation rate in COVID-19 patients treated by high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC). However, the lung aeration response to APP has not been addressed. We aimed to explore the lung aeration response to APP by lung ultrasound (LUS). METHODS: This two-center, prospective, observational study enrolled patients with COVID-19-induced acute hypoxemic respiratory failure treated by HFNC and APP. LUS score was recorded 5-10 min before, 1 h after APP, and 5-10 min after supine in the first APP session within the first three days. The primary outcome was LUS score changes in the first three days. Secondary outcomes included changes in SpO2/FiO2 ratio, respiratory rate and ROX index (SpO2/FiO2/respiratory rate) related to APP, and the rate of treatment success (patients who avoided intubation). RESULTS: Seventy-one patients were enrolled. LUS score decreased from 20 (interquartile range [IQR] 19-24) to 19 (18-21) (p < 0.001) after the first APP session, and to 19 (18-21) (p < 0.001) after three days. Compared to patients with treatment failure (n = 20, 28%), LUS score reduction after the first three days in patients with treatment success (n = 51) was greater (- 2.6 [95% confidence intervals - 3.1 to - 2.0] vs 0 [- 1.2 to 1.2], p = 0.001). A decrease in dorsal LUS score > 1 after the first APP session was associated with decreased risk for intubation (Relative risk 0.25 [0.09-0.69]). APP daily duration was correlated with LUS score reduction in patients with treatment success, especially in dorsal lung zones (r = - 0.76; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure due to COVID-19 and treated by HFNC, APP reduced LUS score. The reduction in dorsal LUS scores after APP was associated with treatment success. The longer duration on APP was correlated with greater lung aeration. Allan-Herndon-Dudley is an X-linked recessive syndrome caused by pathogenic variants in the SLC16A2 gene. Clinical manifestations are a consequence of impaired thyroid metabolism and aberrant transport of thyroid hormones to the brain. Carrier females are generally asymptomatic and may show subtle symptoms of the disease. We describe a female with a complete Allan-Herndon-Dudley phenotype, carrying a de novo 543-kb deletion of the X chromosome. The deletion encompasses exon 1 of the SLC16A2 gene and JPX and FTX genes; it is known that the latter two genes participate in the X-inactivation process upregulating XIST gene expression. Subsequent studies in the patient demonstrated the preferential expression of the X chromosome with the JPX and FTX deletion.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by loss of motor neurons and characterized neuropathologically in almost all cases by nuclear depletion and cytoplasmic aggregation of TDP-43, a nuclear RNA-binding protein (RBP). We identified ELAVL3 as one of the most downregulated genes in our transcriptome profiles of laser captured microdissection of motor neurons from sporadic ALS nervous systems and the most dysregulated of all RBPs. Neuropathological characterizations showed ELAVL3 nuclear depletion in a great percentage of remnant motor neurons, sometimes accompanied by cytoplasmic accumulations. These abnormalities were common in sporadic cases with and without intermediate expansions in ATXN2 and familial cases carrying mutations in C9orf72 and SOD1. Depletion of ELAVL3 occurred at both the RNA and protein levels and a short protein isoform was identified, but it is not related to a TDP-43-dependent cryptic exon in intron 3. Strikingly, ELAVL3 abnormalities were more frequent than TDP-43 abnormalities and occurred in motor neurons still with normal nuclear TDP-43 present, but all neurons with abnormal TDP-43 also had abnormal ELAVL3. In a neuron-like cell culture model using SH-SY5Y cells, ELAVL3 mislocalization occurred weeks before TDP-43 abnormalities were seen. We interrogated genetic databases, but did not identify association of ELAVL3 genetic structure with ALS. Taken together, these findings suggest that ELAVL3 is an important RBP in ALS pathogenesis acquired early and the neuropathological data suggest that it is involved by loss of function rather than cytoplasmic toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Amoxicillin (AX) is nowadays the ß-lactam that more frequently induces immediate allergic reactions. Nevertheless, diagnosis of AX allergy is occasionally challenging due to risky in vivo tests and non-optimal sensitivity of in vitro tests. AX requires protein haptenation to form multivalent conjugates with increased size to be immunogenic. Knowing adduct structural features for promoting effector cell activation would help to improve in vitro tests. We aimed to identify the optimal structural requirement in specific cellular degranulation to AX using well-precised nanoarchitectures of different lengths. METHOD: We constructed eight Bidendron Antigens (BiAns) based on polyethylene glycol (PEG) linkers of different lengths (600-12,000 Da), end-coupled with polyamidoamine dendrons that were terminally multi-functionalized with amoxicilloyl (AXO). In vitro IgE recognition was studied by competitive radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and antibody-nanoarchitecture complexes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Their allergenic activity was evaluated using bone marrow-derived mast cells (MCs) passively sensitized with mouse monoclonal IgE against AX and humanized RBL-2H3 cells sensitized with polyclonal antibodies from sera of AX-allergic patients. RESULTS: All BiAns were recognized by AX-sIgE. Dose-dependent activation responses were observed in both cellular assays, only with longer structures, containing spacers in the range of PEG 6000-12,000 Da. Consistently, greater proportion of immunocomplexes and number of antibodies per complex for longer BiAns were visualized by TEM. CONCLUSIONS: BiAns are valuable platforms to study the mechanism of effector cell activation. These nanomolecular tools have demonstrated the importance of the adduct size to promote effector cell activation in AX allergy, which will impact for improving in vitro diagnostics.

BACKGROUND: Heart transplant (HT) remains the most frequently indicated therapy for patients with end-stage heart failure that improves prognosis in Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCM). However, the lack of benznidazole therapy and availability of RT-PCR follow-up in many centers is a major limitation to perform this life-saving intervention, as there are concerns related with the risk of reactivation. We aimed to describe the outcomes of a cohort of patients with CCM who underwent HT using a conventional protocol with mycophenolate mofetil, without benznidazole prophylaxis or RT-PCR follow-up. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. Between 2008 and 2018, 43 patients with CCM underwent HT. A descriptive analysis to characterize outcomes as rejection, infectious and neoplastic complications and a survival analysis was carried out. RESULTS: Median of follow-up was 4.3 (IR 4.28) years. Survival at 1 month, 1 year, and 5 years was 95%, 85%, and 75%, respectively, infections being the main cause of death (60%). Reactivations occurred in only three patients (7.34%) and were not related to mortality. CONCLUSION: This cohort showed a favorable survival and a low reactivation rate without an impact on mortality. Our results suggest that performing HT in patients with CCM following conventional guidelines and recommendations for other etiologies is a safe approach.

Magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) with metal-containing cations are promising extraction solvents that provide fast and high efficiency extraction of DNA. Hydrophobic MILs can be generated in situ in a methodology called in situ dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction. To consolidate the sample preparation workflow, it is desirable to directly use the DNA-enriched MIL microdroplet in the subsequent analytical detection technique. Fluorescence-based techniques employed for DNA detection often utilize SYBR Green I, a DNA binding dye that exhibits optimal fluorescence when bound to double-stranded DNA. However, the MIL may hinder the fluorescence signal of the SYBR Green I-dsDNA complex due to quenching. In this study, MILs with metal-containing cations were selected and their fluorescence quenching effects evaluated using FÓ§rster Resonance Energy Transfer and quantified using Stern-Volmer models. The MILs were based on N-substituted imidazole ligands (with butyl- and benzyl- groups as substituents) coordinated to Ni2+ or Co2+ metal centers as cations, and paired with chloride anions. The effects of NiCl2 and CoCl2 salts and of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid on the fluorophore complex were also studied to understand the components of the MIL structure that are responsible for quenching. The metal within the MIL chemical structure was found to be the main component contributing to fluorescence quenching. FÓ§rster critical distances between 11.9 and 18.8 Å were obtained for the MILs, indicating that quenching is likely not due to non-radiative energy transfer but rather to spin-orbit coupling or excited-state electron transfer. The MILs were able to be directly used in qPCR and fluorescence emission measurements using a microplate reader for detection, demonstrating their applicability in fluorescence-based detection methods. Ionic liquids and derivatives-mainly polymeric ionic liquids and magnetic ionic liquids-have been extensively used in microscale extraction over the past few years. Current trends in analytical sample preparation gear toward linking microextraction approaches with high-throughput sample processing to comply with green analytical chemistry requirements. A variety of high sample throughput strategies that are coupled to both ionic-liquid-based solid-phase microextraction and ionic liquid-based liquid-phase microextraction are herein reported. The review is focused on microscale extraction methods that use (i) custom-made and dedicated extraction devices, (ii) parallel extraction, (iii) magnetic-based separation, and (iv) miniaturized systems employing semi-automatic or fully automatic flow injection methods, related micro/millifluidic devices, and robotic equipment.

Regorafenib is one option for second-line treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), improving overall survival (OS) of sorafenib-tolerant patients who develop progression. We aim to evaluate the safety and outcomes of regorafenib as second-line treatment for HCC recurrence after liver transplantation (LT). This is a retrospective, multicenter, international study including regorafenib-treated LT patients (2015-2018), with analysis of baseline characteristics and evolutionary events during sorafenib/regorafenib treatment. Twenty-eight LT patients (57 years, 7% cirrhotics, 54% performance status 1) were included. Median time from LT to regorafenib initiation was 3.9 (1.1-18.5) years; median time on sorafenib was 11.3 (0.7-76.4) months and 14 (1-591) days from sorafenib discontinuation to regorafenib. During regorafenib (6.3 months), all patients had at least one adverse event (AE), the most common grade 3/4 AEs were fatigue (n = 7) and dermatological reaction (n = 5). While no liver rejection was observed, plasma levels of immunosuppressive drugs increased in five. Twenty-four patients developed progression (38% extrahepatic growth, 33% new extrahepatic lesions/vascular invasion). Median OS from regorafenib initiation was 12.9 (95% CI, 6.7-19.1) and 38.4 months (95% CI, 18.5-58.4) for the sorafenib initiation. This is the first study showing safety of regorafenib after LT, thus providing the rational of considering regorafenib in the clinical decision-making in sorafenib-tolerant patients with HCC recurrence after LT.

We conducted a phase 2 trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of bendamustine instead of BCNU (carmustine) in the BEAM (BCNU, etoposide, cytarabine and melphalan) regimen (BendaEAM) as conditioning for autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) in patients with aggressive lymphomas. The primary endpoint was 3-year progression-free survival (PFS). Sixty patients (median age 55 [28-71] years) were included. All patients (except one who died early) engrafted after a median of 11 (9-72) and 14 (4-53) days to achieve neutrophil and platelet counts of >0.5 × 109 /l and >20 × 109 /l, respectively. Non-relapse mortality at 100 days and 1 year were 3.3% and 6.7%, respectively. With a median follow-up of 67 (40-77) months, the estimated 3-year PFS and overall survival (OS) were 58% and 75%, respectively. Patients in partial response at study entry had significantly worse PFS and OS than patients who underwent ASCT in complete metabolic remission, and this was the only prognostic factor associated with both PFS (Relative risk [RR], 0.27 [95% confidence interval {CI} [0.12-0.56]) and OS (RR, 0.40 [95% CI 0.17-0.97]) in the multivariate analysis. BendaEAM conditioning is therefore a feasible and effective regimen in patients with aggressive lymphomas. However, patients not in complete metabolic remission at the time of transplant had poorer survival and so should be considered for alternative treatment strategies.

A new class of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) with metal-containing cations was applied in in situ dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) for the extraction of long and short double-stranded DNA. For developing the method, MILs comprised of N-substituted imidazole ligands (with butyl-, benzyl-, or octyl-groups as substituents) coordinated to different metal centers (Ni2+, Mn2+, or Co2+) as cations, and chloride anions were investigated. These water-soluble MILs were reacted with the bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide anion during the extraction to generate a water-immiscible MIL capable of preconcentrating DNA. The feasibility of combining the extraction methodology with anion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) or fluorescence spectroscopy was studied. The method with the Ni2+- and Co2+-based MILs was easily combined with fluorescence spectroscopy and provided a faster and more sensitive method than HPLC-DAD for the determination of DNA. In addition, the method was compared to conventional DLLME using analogous water-immiscible MILs. The developed in situ MIL-DLLME method required only 3 min for DNA extraction and yielded 1.1-1.5 times higher extraction efficiency (EFs) than the conventional MIL-DLLME method. The in situ MIL-DLLME method was also compared to the trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium tris(hexafluorocetylaceto)nickelate(II) MIL, which has been used in previous DNA extraction studies. EFs of 42-99% were obtained using the new generation of MILs, whereas EFs of only 20-38% were achieved with the phosphonium MIL. This new class of MILs is simple and inexpensive to prepare. In addition, the MILs present operational advantages such as easier manipulation in comparison to hydrophobic MILs, which can have high viscosities. These MILs are a promising new class of DNA extraction solvents that can be manipulated using an external magnetic field. Hexanucleotide repeat expansions in C9orf72 are the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (C9 ALS). The main hypothesized pathogenic mechanisms are C9orf72 haploinsufficiency and/or toxicity from one or more of bi-directionally transcribed repeat RNAs and their dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) poly-GP, poly-GA, poly-GR, poly-PR and poly-PA. Recently, nuclear import and/or export defects especially caused by arginine-containing poly-GR or poly-PR have been proposed as significant contributors to pathogenesis based on disease models. We quantitatively studied and compared DPRs, nuclear pore proteins and C9orf72 protein in clinically related and clinically unrelated regions of the central nervous system, and compared them to phosphorylated TDP-43 (pTDP-43), the hallmark protein of ALS. Of the five DPRs, only poly-GR was significantly abundant in clinically related areas compared to unrelated areas (p < 0.001), and formed dendritic-like aggregates in the motor cortex that co-localized with pTDP-43 (p < 0.0001). While most poly-GR dendritic inclusions were pTDP-43 positive, only 4% of pTDP-43 dendritic inclusions were poly-GR positive. Staining for arginine-containing poly-GR and poly-PR in nuclei of neurons produced signals that were not specific to C9 ALS. We could not detect significant differences of nuclear markers RanGap, Lamin B1, and Importin ß1 in C9 ALS, although we observed subtle nuclear changes in ALS, both C9 and non-C9, compared to control. The C9orf72 protein itself was diffusely expressed in cytoplasm of large neurons and glia, and nearly 50% reduced, in both clinically related frontal cortex and unrelated occipital cortex, but not in cerebellum. In summary, sense-encoded poly-GR DPR was unique, and localized to dendrites and pTDP43 in motor regions of C9 ALS CNS. This is consistent with new emerging ideas about TDP-43 functions in dendrites.

RESUMEN

The means of optimally managing very elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has not been established. We retrospectively analyzed 252 patients aged 80-100 years, diagnosed with DLBCL or grade 3B follicular lymphoma, treated in 19 hospitals from the GELTAMO group. Primary objective was to analyze the influence of the type of treatment and comorbidity scales on progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). One hundred sixty-three patients (63%) were treated with chemotherapy that included anthracyclines and/or rituximab, whereas 15% received no chemotherapeutic treatment. With a median follow-up of 44 months, median PFS and OS were 9.5 and 12.5 months, respectively. In an analysis restricted to the 205 patients treated with any kind of chemotherapy, comorbidity scales did not influence the choice of treatment type significantly. Independent factors associated with better PFS and OS were: age < 86 years, cumulative illness rating scale (CIRS) score < 6, intermediate risk (1-2) R-IPI, and treatment with R-CHOP at full or reduced doses. We developed a prognostic model based on the multivariate analysis of the 108 patients treated with R-CHOP-like: median OS was 45 vs. 12 months (P = .001), respectively, for patients with 0-1 vs. 2-3 risk factors (age > 85 years, R-IPI 3-5 or CIRS > 5). In conclusion, treatment with R-CHOP-like is associated with good survival in a significant proportion of patients. We have developed a simple prognostic model that may aid the selection patients who could benefit from a curative treatment, although it needs to be validated in larger series.

RESUMEN

Ionic liquids are a class of solvents and materials that hold great promise in bioanalytical chemistry. Task-specific ionic liquids have recently been designed for the selective extraction, separation, and detection of proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, and other physiologically relevant analytes from complex biological samples. To facilitate rapid bioanalysis, ionic liquids have been integrated in miniaturized and automated procedures. Bioanalytical separations have also benefited from the modification of nonspecific magnetic materials with ionic liquids or the implementation of ionic liquids with inherent magnetic properties. Furthermore, the direct detection of the extracted molecules in the analytical instrument has been demonstrated with structurally tuned ionic liquids and magnetic ionic liquids, providing a significant advantage in the analysis of low-abundance analytes. This article gives an overview of these advances that involve the application of ionic liquids and derivatives in bioanalysis. Graphical abstract Ionic liquids, magnetic ionic liquids, and ionic liquid-based sorbents are increasing the speed, selectivity, and sensitivity in the analysis of biological samples.

An ionic-liquid-based in situ dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method coupled to headspace gas chromatography and mass spectrometry was developed for the rapid analysis of ultraviolet filters. The chemical structures of five ionic liquids were specifically designed to incorporate various functional groups for the favorable extraction of the target analytes. Extraction parameters including ionic liquid mass, molar ratio of ionic liquid to metathesis reagent, vortex time, ionic strength, pH, and total sample volume were studied and optimized. The effect of the headspace temperature and volume during the headspace sampling step was also evaluated to increase the sensitivity of the method. The optimized procedure is fast as it only required ∼7-10 min per extraction and allowed for multiple extractions to be performed simultaneously. In addition, the method exhibited high precision, good linearity, and low limits of detection for six ultraviolet filters in aqueous samples. The developed method was applied to both pool and lake water samples attaining acceptable relative recovery values.

The use of mixed hemimicelles of ionic liquid (IL)-based surfactants in a magnetic-based micro-dispersive solid-phase extraction (m-µdSPE) approach is described. Not only is the symmetric monocationic IL-based surfactant 1,3-didodecylimidazolium bromide (C12C12Im-Br) studied for first time in m-µdSPE, but double-salt (DS) IL (DSIL)-based surfactants are also examined. Nine DSIL-based surfactants were formed by combination of C12C12Im-Br with other IL-based surfactants, including nonsymmetric monocationic and dicationic ILs combined at three different molar fractions. The analytical application was focused on the determination of a group of eight phenols, including bisphenol A, in water samples. The best results were obtained with the DSIL formed by C12C12Im-Br (molar fraction 0.5) and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C16MIm-Br), after proper optimization of the overall method in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and diode-array detection (DAD). The optimum conditions for 100 mL of water samples require a small amount (10 mg) of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles, a low content (5.0 mg of C12C12Im-Br and 3.9 mg of C16MIm-Br) of the selected DSIL, pH 11, a sonication time of 2.5 min, and an equilibration time of 5 min with the aid of NdFeB magnets, followed by elution of phenols, evaporation, and reconstitution with 0.5 mL of acetonitrile. The overall m-µdSPE-HPLC-DAD method is characterized for limits of detection down to 1.3 µg · L(-1), intraday relative standard deviations lower than 13 % (n = 3), and interday relative standard deviations lower than 17 % (n = 9), with a spiking level of 15 µg · L(-1); with enrichment factors between 15.7 and 141, and average relative recoveries of 99.9 %.

Four different crosslinked polymeric ionic liquid (PIL)-based sorbent coatings were evaluated in an automated direct-immersion solid-phase microextraction method (automated DI-SPME) in combination with gas chromatography (GC). The crosslinked PIL coatings were based on vinyl-alkylimidazolium- (ViCnIm-) or vinylbenzyl-alkylimidazolium- (ViBzCnIm-) IL monomers, and di-(vinylimidazolium)dodecane ((ViIm)2C12-) or di-(vinylbenzylimidazolium)dodecane ((ViBzIm)2C12-) dicationic IL crosslinkers. In addition, a PIL-based hybrid coating containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was also studied. The studied PIL coatings were covalently attached to derivatized nitinol wires and mounted onto the Supelco assembly to ensure automation when acting as SPME coatings. Their behavior was evaluated in the determination of a group of water pollutants, after proper optimization. A comparison was carried out with three common commercial SPME fibers. It was observed that those PILs containing a benzyl group in their structures, either in the IL monomer and crosslinker (PIL-1-1) or only in the crosslinker (PIL-0-1), were the most efficient sorbents for the selected analytes. The validation of the overall automated DI-SPME-GC-flame ionization detector (FID) method gave limits of detection down to 135 µg · L(-1) for p-cresol when using the PIL-1-1 and down to 270 µg · L(-1) when using the PIL-0-1; despite their coating thickness: ~2 and ~5 µm, respectively. Average relative recoveries with waters were of 85 ± 14 % and 87 ± 15 % for PIL-1-1 and PIL-0-1, respectively. Precision values as relative standard deviation were always lower than 4.9 and 7.6 % (spiked level between 10 and 750 µg · L(-1), as intra-day precision). BACKGROUND: The incorporation of bimetallic magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) in microextraction methods is an emerging trend due to the improved magnetic susceptibility offered by these solvents, which relies on the presence of metallic components in both the cation and the anion. This feature favors easy magnetic separation of these solvents in analytical sample preparation strategies. However, reported liquid-phase microextraction methods based on bimetallic MILs still present an important drawback in that the MILs are highly viscous, making a dispersive solvent during the microextraction procedure necessary, while also requiring a tedious back-extraction step prior to the chromatographic analysis. RESULTS: We propose for the first time a new generation of ultra-low viscosity bimetallic MILs composed of two paramagnetic Mn(II) complexes characterized by their easy usage in dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME). The approach does not require dispersive solvent and the MIL-DLLME setup was directly combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and fluorescence detection (FD), without any back-extraction step. The approach was evaluated for the determination of five monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as carcinogenic biomarkers, in human urine. Optimum conditions of the MIL-DLLME method included the use of a low MIL volume (75 µL), a short extraction time (5 min), and no need of any dispersive solvent neither NaCl. The method presented limits of detection down to 7.50 ng L-1, enrichment factors higher than 17, and provided inter-day relative standard deviation lower than 11%. Analysis of urine samples was successfully performed, with biomarker content found at levels between 0.24 and 7.8 ng mL-1. SIGNIFICANCE: This study represents the first liquid-phase microextraction method using the new generation of low-viscous bimetallic MILs. The proposed MIL-DLLME approach represents 2 important advances with respect to previous methods employing bimetallic MILs: 1) no dispersive solvent is required, and 2) direct injection of the MIL in the HPLC is possible after minor dilution (no back extraction steps are required). Therefore, the microextraction strategy is simple, rapid, and consumes very small amounts of energy.
