RESUMEN

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), as a class of nonprotein-coding RNAs, post-transcriptionally regulate the expression of target genes by base pairing to 3'-untranslated regions (3'-UTRs). Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has been identified as a critical component of the antioxidant defense mechanism. Dysregulation is associated with chemoresistance and radioresistance in cancerous cells. MiRNA-mediated regulation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway has been shown to have important implications for the development of various cancers. In this article, we review the roles of miRNAs as regulators of the Nrf2 pathway in different human cancers. Ras-associated binding (Rab) proteins have an essential role regulation of vesicle transport, as well as oncogenic functions in preventing chemotherapy efficacy and cancer development. More importantly, increased evidence indicated that the interaction between miRNAs and Rabs has been determined to play critical roles in cancer therapy. However, the significant limitations in using miRNAs for therapeutic applications include cross-targeting and instability of miRNAs. The detailed aspect of the interaction of miRNAs and Rabs is not clearly understood. In the current review, we highlighted the involvement of these molecules as regulators of the Nrf2 pathway in cancer pathogenesis. Potential methods and several obstacles in developing miRNAs as an anticancer therapy are also mentioned.

In response to invading parasites, one of the principal arms of innate immunity is oxidative stress, caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, oxidative stresses play dual functions in the disease, whereby free radicals promote pathogen removal, but they can also trigger inflammation, resulting in tissue injuries. A growing body of evidence has strongly supported the notion that nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF) signaling is one of the main antioxidant pathways to combat this oxidative burst against parasites. Given the important role of NRF2 in oxidative stress, in this review, we investigate the activation mechanism of the NRF2 antioxidant pathway in different parasitic diseases, such as malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, schistosomiasis, entamoebiasis, and trichinosis.

The application of solar-thermal surfaces for antifrosting and defrosting has emerged as a passive and environmentally friendly approach to mitigate the negative consequences of frost formation, such as structural damage and reduced heat transfer efficiency. However, achieving robust all-day frostphobicity solely through interfacial modification and solar-thermal effects is challenging in practical applications: The thick frost that accumulates at night strongly scatters solar radiation, rendering the solar-thermal coatings ineffective during the daytime. Additionally, these nanostructured coatings are susceptible to wear and tear when exposed to the outdoors for extended periods of time. To address these challenges, we present an innovative frostphobic surface that incorporates V-grooved structures with superhydrophobic solar-thermal layers (VSSs). The out-of-plane gradient structures facilitate spatially regulated vapor diffusion, an enhanced photothermal effect, and robust water repellency. These features not only prevent frost from covering the entire surface overnight, enabling effective solar-thermal defrosting during the daytime, but also protect the surface from deterioration. The combined merits ensure robust all-day frostphobicity and exceptional durability, making the VSS surface promising for practical applications and extending the lifespan in extreme environments.

RESUMEN

A unique case of non-ST-elevation myocardial infarctionis discussed, in which the left main coronary artery and anomalous coronary artery from the opposite sinus of Valsalva were absent. In this case, the left coronary cusp was blunted, and all three coronary arteries trifurcated from a single ostium in the right coronary cusp. The proximal part of the left anterior descending coronary artery had a trans-septal (intermuscular) course, while the left circumflex coronary artery had a retro-aortic course and severe thrombotic stenosis before the terminal portion. Due to the patient's refusal of coronary artery bypass graft, percutaneous coronary intervention was performed.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) due to the novel coronavirus has become the highest priority that threatens human health. This situation demands widespread vaccination and the innovation of new therapeutic methods. Despite drug discoveries, the need for approving new medicaments is felt because of adverse effects and lack of efficacy. Several medicinal plants including Viola odorata L. are recommended in traditional Persian medicine for alleviating respiratory infection symptoms. Recent studies showed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-asthmatic, antitussive, analgesic, and antibacterial activities of sweet violet. These enhance respiratory functions, reduce pulmonary inflammation, and decline mucous membrane edema. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of sweet violet syrup in alleviating the manifestations of COVID-19 infection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized parallel-group double-blind controlled trial was conducted at Al-Zahra general hospital, Isfahan, Iran. A total of 108 outpatients were enrolled in the study. The patients were randomly allocated to intervention and placebo groups, with 54 patients in each group. The allocation was concealed using sealed opaque envelopes. The intervention group received violet syrup and the control group received placebo syrup, an add-on to the conventional treatment. The outcomes were COVID-19 manifestations, such as dyspnea, cough, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea, considered as outcomes of the study and were evaluated twice using a visual analog scale before the intervention and after 7 days, at the end of the study. Patients were followed daily by phone calls to monitor proper drug consumption and possible side effects. RESULTS: No significant difference was between groups regarding demographic characteristics and vital signs before and after the treatment. Although all symptoms have improved significantly in both groups, patients who received violet syrup recovered faster and the mean severity scores of cough (P = 0.025), myalgia (P = 0.036), headache (P = 0.037), and diarrhea (P = 0.044) decreased greater in comparison to control group. CONCLUSION: This study, the first clinical trial on the effectiveness of Viola odorata on SARS-CoV-2 patients, showed that Viola odorata L. effectively controls prevalent manifestations of COVID-19 including cough, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea. Regarding this survey, the violet syrup can be mentioned as a complementary treatment for viral influenza-like infections in which cough, myalgia, headache, and diarrhea are prominent.

RESUMEN

Intracranial lipomas account for less than 1% of all brain tumors. Corpus callosum lipoma (CCL) is a rare finding and up until now, documented cases are around 200 patients. These lipomas remain mostly asymptomatic, but when symptoms appear, they present through headache, seizure, dementia and in some cases, rather uncommon neurological disorders such as mirror writing. Fourteen years old girl with history of 8 years headache and recent development of vertigo, extremities trembling and drop attack was referred to neurologist and brain imaging confirmed CCL. Herein, we report another rare case of CCL, with common and uncommon symptoms of latter tumor in detail; in addition to reviewing the previous 80 years case reports aiming to achieve comprehensive perception from CCL. In situ generated gold nanoparticles inside the nanospaces of periodic mesoporous organosilica with an imidazolium framework (Au@PMO-IL) were found to be highly active, selective, and reusable catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of activated and nonactivated alcohols under mild reaction conditions. The catalyst was characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurement, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analysis (EA), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the presence of either Cs2CO3 (35 °C) or K2CO3 (60 °C) as reaction bases in toluene as a reaction solvent. Under both reaction conditions, various types of alcohols (up to 35 examples) including activated benzylic, primary and secondary aliphatic, heterocyclic, and challenging cyclic aliphatic alcohols converted to the expected carbonyl compounds in good to excellent yields and selectivity. The catalyst was also recovered and reused for at least seven reaction cycles. Data from three independent leaching tests indicated that amounts of leached gold particles were negligible (<0.2 ppm). It is believed that the combination of bridged imidazolium groups and confined nanospaces of PMO-IL might be a major reason explaining the remarkable stabilization and homogeneous distribution of in situ generated gold nanoparticles, thus resulting in the highly active and recyclable catalyst system.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system, is accompanied by some psychiatric disorders, one prominent example of which is depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a Persian herbal medicine treatment that contains Crocus sativus, Hypericum perforatum, Cinnamon verum, and Vitis vinifera on fatigue and sleep disorders in MS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Persian medicine remedy containing C.sativus, H.perforatum, C.verum, and V.vinifera was tested for its ability to improve the symptoms of depression in MS patients. This randomized double-blind clinical study was performed among 52 patients with MS who were allocated to their respective research groups through blocked randomization. The patients were treated for 4 weeks with either the drug or the placebo. To quantify the symptoms of depression, Beck depression inventory (BDI) was used. RESULTS: Forty-six patients completed the study. In the course of the study, as the primary outcome, BDI decreased in the drug group (p =0.000) and the placebo group (p =0.001) significantly, but the rate of change in the drug group was significantly higher than in the placebo group (-13.9 ± 8.6 vs. -3.9 ± 4.3, p =0.000). While analyzing time and treatment effect for BDI, significant decreases in BDI were observed for the drug group, but not in the placebo group (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that Persian medicine remedy treatment in combination with chemical drugs may improve depression symptoms in MS patients. More investigations are needed to discover the exact mechanisms and processes involved.

Dilute alkali pretreatment was performed on softwood pine to maximize ethanol and biogas production via a biorefinery approach. Alkali pretreatments were performed with 0-2% w/v NaOH at 100-180°C for 1-5h. The liquid fraction of the pretreated substrates was subjected to anaerobic digestion. The solid fraction of the pretreatment was used for separate enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. High ethanol yields of 76.9‒78.0% were achieved by pretreatment with 2% (w/v) NaOH at 180°C. The highest biogas yield of 244mL/g volatile solid (at 25°C, 1bar) was achieved by the pretreatment with 1% (w/v) NaOH at 180°C. The highest gasoline equivalent (sum of ethanol and methane) of 197L per ton of pinewood and the lowest ethanol manufacturing cost of 0.75€/L was obtained after pretreatment with 1% NaOH at 180°C for 5h. The manufacturing cost of ethanol from untreated wood was 4.12€/L.

In recent years, the problems associated with bacterial resistance to antibiotics caused nanodrugs to be considered as a new way for infectious diseases treatment. The main purpose of this study was to develop a new agent against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a very difficult bacterium to treat, based on azlocillin antibiotic and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Azlocillin was conjugated with AgNPs by chemical methods and its antimicrobial activity was studied against P. aeruginosa using well diffusion agar method. Then, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of the new conjugate was specified with macro-dilution method. The animal study showed the considerable enhanced antibacterial effect of azlocillin in conjugation with AgNPs against P. aeruginosa in comparison with azlocillin alone, AgNPs alone and azlocillin in combination with AgNPs.
