RESUMEN

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients are considered immunocompromised, putting them at high risk for infections, including cytomegalovirus (CMV). CMV can affect hematological parameters, causing further complications in ESRD patients. This study intended to determine the seropositivity of CMV infection in hemodialysis patients and its effect on different blood parameters in ESRD patients to help decrease the overall dialysis associated morbidity and mortality. Blood samples were collected from 45 ESRD patients and 45 controls. A complete blood count was performed using an automated cell counter. CMV-specific IgM and IgG levels were measured using immunochemistry testing. The seropositivity for CMV-IgG was 42.2% in ESRD patients which was significantly higher than in control group (22.2%) (p=0.042). The seropositivity for CMV-IgM was 6.7% in ESRD patients with no difference with the control group (4.4%). The prevalence of anemia was significantly higher in CMV seropositive (77.3%) compared to CMV seronegative (47.8%) ESRD patients. Other studied blood parameters were not different between CMV seronegative and seropositive ESRD patients. In conclusion, CMV infection is a significant concern for dialysis patients and can affect hematological parameters, leading to further complications. Early detection and treatment of CMV infection and monitoring of CMV IgM and IgG levels are critical to prevent further complications and improve clinical outcomes.

We report electrical conductance and thermopower measurements on InAs nanowires synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Gate modulation of the thermopower of individual InAs nanowires with a diameter around 20 nm is obtained over T = 40-300 K. At low temperatures (T < ∼100 K), oscillations in the thermopower and power factor concomitant with the stepwise conductance increases are observed as the gate voltage shifts the chemical potential of electrons in InAs nanowire through quasi-one-dimensional (1D) subbands. This work experimentally shows the possibility to modulate semiconductor nanowire's thermoelectric properties through 1D subband formation in the diffusive transport regime for electron, a long-sought goal in nanostructured thermoelectrics research. Moreover, we point out the scattering (or disorder) induced energy level broadening as the limiting factor in smearing out the 1D confinement enhanced thermoelectric power factor.

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Cardiac arrhythmias are prevalent in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD), however, dialysis treatment per se can be considered as an arrhythmogenic stimulus. Uremic patients are characterized by a "pro-arrhythmic substrate" because of the high prevalence of ischemic heart disease, left ventricular hypertrophy, and autonomic neuropathy. The incidence of hypothermia in HD patient is unknown. The severity of hypothermia correlated to cardiac arrhythmias. Here, we report a 50-year-old Saudi lady known case of long-standing diabetes mellitus with diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, ESRD on HD, coronary artery disease developed transient third-degree heart block secondary to iatrogenic hypothermia during HD session, which was completely resolved after adjusting temperature of dialysis machine. To the best of our knowledge, the association of third-degree atrioventricular block and hypothermia induced by HD session has not been previously reported.

We report on low temperature (2-30K) electron transport and magneto-transport measurements of a chemically synthesized InAs nanowire. Both the temperature, T, and transverse magnetic field dependences of the nanowire conductance are consistent with the functional forms predicted in one-dimensional (1D) weak localization theory. By fitting the magneto-conductance data to theory, the phase coherence length of electrons is determined to be tens of nanometers with a T(-1/3) dependence. Moreover, as the electron density is increased by a gate voltage, the magneto-conductance shows a possible signature of suppression of weak localization in multiple 1D subbands.

This report describes the case of a 13-year-old male patient presenting with functional small bowel obstruction. The child was also observed to have persistent tachycardia, and repeat cardiac examination revealed a new-onset cardiac murmur and a gallop rhythm. Acute viral myocarditis was clinically suspected, prompting further cardiac evaluations including electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram (echo), and cardiac enzyme panel. Both EKG and echo findings suggested acute myocardial injury, in addition to elevated levels of cardiac enzymes and other inflammatory markers. Considering the ongoing pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection was suspected, but reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was negative. Because multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may occur later in the course of COVID-19 illness, a SARS-CoV-2 antibody test was performed, with positive results. To our knowledge, this is the first pediatric case of COVID-19 presenting as functional intestinal obstruction. We present this case to share our findings on this unique manifestation of COVID-19 with pediatric colleagues. We also engage in a brief review of MIS-C.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding issues pertaining to quality of life is essential for any disease, particularly in recipients of liver transplantation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of liver transplantation on Egyptian recipients' health-related quality of life (HRQOL). METHODS: A prospective study carried out at the Ain Shams Center for Organ Transplantation (Cairo, Egypt), including 35 recipients for the evaluation of HRQOL using short form 36 score (Arabic version) and Beck Depression Inventory scores pre-transplantation and 1 and 6 months afterwards. RESULTS: The mean age of the recipients was 49.27 ± 8.16 years. Among them, 17 patients were highly educated. A statistically significant improvement in all dimensions of their HRQOL was observed after liver transplantation. Their physical functioning was 45.00 ± 34.34 before liver transplantation while after 1 and 6 months it was 57.50 ± 20.66 and 74.83 ± 19.27, respectively (P < 0.001). All 17 patients completed their first year after transplantation, showing a statistically significant improvement in all dimensions of their HRQOL one year after liver transplantation except that in mental health, role limitation due to emotional health emotional and social functioning domains. CONCLUSION: HRQOL is an important aspect of liver transplantation that should not be neglected.

This research was conducted to study the effect of three different sowing dates (15th October, 15th November and 15th December) and two vernalization treatments (5 °C and -20 °C) on leaf structure of Beta vulgaris L. cv. Univers. The obtained data are summarized as follows: The maximum values of the most studied parameters; lower epidermis + spongy tissue thickness, midrib, mesophyll tissue, vascular bundle, collenchymatous tissue and number of xylem vessels per arm were found as a result of 15th October sowing date treatment compared with the two other sowing dates. Furthermore, effect of the cooling treatments varied according to the recorded character, sowing date and cooling degree. Most of the vernalization treatments at early sowing dates increased the mesophyll tissue, midrib, number of vascular bundles per transverse section, vascular bundle thickness and number of xylem arms per transverse section. The two studied cooling treatments at 15th October sowing date increased both stomatal index and average number of stomata: average number of epidermis cells compared with the control. Furthermore, 15th October under -20 °C treatment led to small epidermal cells and stomata formation, straight epidermal cell walls and closed stomata in comparison to the control.

The inhomogeneity of as-grown single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), in terms of chiral structure, is a major obstacle to integration of these novel materials in advanced electronics. While separation methods have circumvented this problem, current synthesis approaches must be refined for large-scale production of SWCNTs with uniform properties. In addition, it is highly desirable to alter the initial chirality distribution which constrains fundamental study and applications. Here, we demonstrate that semiconducting SWCNTs are selectively produced in the gas phase by engineering catalysts at the nanoscale with precise size and composition. The semiconducting content in as-grown mixtures of SWCNTs is assessed by UV-visible-NIR absorbance and micro-Raman spectroscopy and reaches a maximum purity of 90% for samples catalyzed by Ni(0.27)Fe(0.73) nanoparticles (2.0 nm mean diameter). Electrical studies are performed on thin film transistors (TFTs) fabricated from as-grown SWCNTs and reveal high on/off current ratios of 10(3).
