Statement of the Problem: The position of the chin and lips are important components in the lower third of the face and can be changed by orthodontic treatment. It seems that factors such as diversity in culture, ethnicity, and place of residence are among the factors affecting people's perception of beauty. Iran, as a vast country, contains different ethnicities and cultures, and of course, it is not exempt from this point of view. Purpose: Our purpose of conducting this study is to investigate the impact of the difference in living environment and culture on people's aesthetic perception. Orthodontists and oral surgeons can use these data to choose the best treatment plan for the patients according to their geographical zones. Material and Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the perception of lips and chin position. A series of 25 profile images were prepared in 5 sets. Each set contained 5 profile images. Northern and Southern lay people and orthodontists were asked to evaluate the profile series of each set in 1 session and score them from 1 to 5: 1, very unattractive; 2, unattractive; 3, neither attractive nor unattractive; 4, attractive; or 5, very attractive. Results: 652 participants in 3 groups, including 16 orthodontists (10 men and 6 women), 318 lay people of the North of Iran (172 men and 138 women), and 318 lay people of the South of Iran (175 men and 139 women) participated in this study. Regardless of the chin position, normal lip position and slight changes of that (in both protruded and retruded positions) were more favorable for all three groups. The images with moderately retruded lips were scored as the least attractive by all three groups and orthodontist gave the lowest score to these profiles. Southern people could better tolerate moderately retruded lips than other two groups. In the fifth series, orthodontists preferred slightly and moderately protruded lips in comparison to other two groups of laypeople. Conclusion: Regardless of the chin position, normal and slightly (-2mm to +2mm) protruded and retruded lips were more favorable in all three groups. Southern people could better tolerate moderately retruded lips than the two other groups.

OBJECTIVE: Thalassemia is the most common hereditary blood disorder across the world. This study aimed to identify some mandibular features of thalassaemic patients and compare them with unaffected counterparts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective case-control study was carried out on lateral cephalograms of 60 subjects (26 males, 34 females) with class II malocclusion and age range of 11 to 15 years. The control group consisted of 60 non-thalassaemic subjects with class II malocclusion and similar chronological age, gender and vertical facial dimension. Based on the Jarabak index, the case and control subjects were classified into hyperdivergent, normodivergent and hypodivergent growth patterns. Four linear (ramus height, ramus width, mandibular depth, and antegonial notch depth) and 3 angular (symphyseal angle, gonial angle, and mandibular arc angle) cephalometric parameters were measured to represent mandibular morphology. The data were analysed using Chi-square test and Student's t-test. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in linear measurements between thalassaemic patients and controls. The symphysis angle was significantly greater and the mandibular arc angle was significantly smaller in the total thalassaemic sample than the control individuals (P<0.001 and P=0.004, respectively). The difference in symphysis angle was significant in both hyperdivergent and normodivergent subjects (P=0.004 and P=0.002, respectively), whereas the difference in mandibular arc angle was only significant in the normodivergent subgroup P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The smaller mandibular arc angle in the thalassaemic sample suggests a more superior than posterior growth direction of condyles compared with healthy individuals. The difference in symphyseal angle represents inherent differences in chin morphology between thalassaemic subjects and controls.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Stainless steel brackets release metallic ions following the process of corrosion in the oral environment. These released ions have potential adverse effects on health, friction between wire and bracket, staining, strength of brackets. Choosing a bracket with favorable corrosive properties; therefore, should be a goal of every practitioner. PURPOSE: The goal of this study is to compare the amount of corrosion among five different brands of brackets using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Five different brands of brackets (Dentaurum, 3M, Ortho Organizer, Cobas and O.R.G) were chosen and ten brackets were selected from each brand. A piece of stainless steel wire was ligated to each bracket. The bracket-archwire complex was then immersed in artificial saliva. Subsequently, the samples were analyzed using an ICP device and the levels of iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese ions were measured. RESULTS: The findings of this study demonstrated that iron was released the most from the tested brackets, followed by nickel. We also found that the Cobas bracket had the most ion release among the tested brackets (p< 0.05), while Ortho Organizer and ORG performed favorably. There was no significant difference between Dentaurum and 3M (p> 0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the results, Ortho Organizer and ORG brackets are suggested in terms of resistance to corrosion.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced hepatotoxicity could be due to a reduction in α2ß1 integrin expression that may either be from the direct effect of CsA itself or from reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction. OBJECTIVES: In this study we aimed to identify the cellular mechanisms underlying CsA-induced hepatic injury by investigating the activation patterns of the antioxidant enzymes, using HepG2 as an in vitro model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HepG2 cells were cultured with different concentrations of CsA (0, 0.1, 1, 10 µg/ml) for 72 h. Effect of CsA on, 1) cellular integrity, 2) glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, 3) cellular levels of glutathione (GSH), 4) intracellular ROS, 5) ALT and AST activities, 6) urea production and 7) α2ß1 integrin expression were assayed. RESULTS: CsA treatment demonstrated a dose dependent increase in intracellular levels of ROS, GPx activity and decrease in GSH levels (P<0.05). GR activity was mildly attenuated in 1 and 10 µg/ml concentrations of CsA. Alanine aminotranferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels increased in CsA treated cells, while urea synthesis was significantly decreased following treatment with higher concentrations of CsA (P<0.05). Significant down-regulation of ß1integrin expression was observed in 1 and 10 µg/ml CsA treated cells while α2 integrin mRNA was significantly down-regulated in all CsA treated cells. CONCLUSIONS: The observed reduction of α2ß1 integrin expression following CsA treatment could be proposed as a possible pathway of CsA-induced hepatotoxicity. Further studies are required to elucidate whether this attenuated expression is due to the direct effect of CsA or caused by overproduction of ROS.
