RESUMEN

The Finkel-Biskis-Jinkins Osteosarcoma (c-Fos; encoded by FOS) plays an important role in several cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and stroke. However, the relationship between FOS and venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains unknown. We identified differentially expressed genes in Gene Expression Omnibus dataset, GSE48000, comprising VTE patients and healthy individuals, and analysed them using CIBERSORT and weighted co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). FOS and CD46 expressions were significantly downregulated (FOS p = 2.26E-05, CD64 p = 8.83E-05) and strongly linked to neutrophil activity in VTE. We used GSE19151 and performed PCR to confirm that FOS and CD46 had diagnostic potential for VTE; however, only FOS showed differential expression by PCR and ELISA in whole blood samples. Moreover, we found that hsa-miR-144 which regulates FOS expression was significantly upregulated in VTE. Furthermore, FOS expression was significantly downregulated in neutrophils of VTE patients (p = 0.03). RNA sequencing performed on whole blood samples of VTE patients showed that FOS exerted its effects in VTE via the leptin-mediated adipokine signalling pathway. Our results suggest that FOS and related genes or proteins can outperform traditional clinical markers and may be used as diagnostic biomarkers for VTE.

RESUMEN

Rank mobility, which was designed to measure the average variation of relative rank positions with respect to any absolute variable over a given time period, can be used to explore how the memory of stock price ranking orders fades over time. We investigate the variation in rank order of the closing prices of stocks registered at the Shanghai A-share market over a long period of 16 years. And we find that rank mobility increases as a power law with increasing time scale, and eventually converges to a constant level. This power-law relationship can be observed not only over a long period of 16 years but also for each consecutive year, especially their power law exponents are very close. The empirical evidence indicates a fundamental dynamics of Chinese stock price movements.

OBJECTIVE: We investigate surname affinities among areas of modern-day China, by constructing a spatial network, and making community detection. It reports a geographical genealogy of the Chinese population that is result of population origins, historical migrations, and societal evolutions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We acquire data from the census records supplied by China's National Citizen Identity Information System, including the surname and regional information of 1.28 billion registered Chinese citizens. We propose a multilayer minimum spanning tree (MMST) to construct a spatial network based on the matrix of isonymic distances, which is often used to characterize the dissimilarity of surname structure among areas. We use the fast unfolding algorithm to detect network communities. RESULTS: We obtain a 10-layer MMST network of 362 prefecture nodes and 3,610 edges derived from the matrix of the Euclidean distances among these areas. These prefectures are divided into eight groups in the spatial network via community detection. We measure the partition by comparing the inter-distances and intra-distances of the communities and obtain meaningful regional ethnicity classification. DISCUSSION: The visualization of the resulting communities on the map indicates that the prefectures in the same community are usually geographically adjacent. The formation of this partition is influenced by geographical factors, historic migrations, trade and economic factors, as well as isolation of culture and language. The MMST algorithm proves to be effective in geo-genealogy and ethnicity classification for it retains essential information about surname affinity and highlights the geographical consanguinity of the population.

The inhaling of cigarette smoke (CS) causes damage to airway epithelial cells, which is related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has been established that CS induces autophagy, but it is still unclear whether excessive or insufficient autophagy results in cell death. This study discovered that CS significantly elevates PSAT1 expression in bronchial epithelial cells. Further studies using autophagy inhibitor, RNA interference, RT-qPCR, western blot, and CCK-8 assay in 16-HBE cells have confirmed that autophagy is temporarily initiated by cigarette smoke extract (CSE), but insufficient autophagy leads to cell death. PSAT1 induced by CSE promotes autophagy and resists insufficient autophagy caused by CSE through Akt/mTOR pathway in human bronchial epithelial cells, playing a protective role.

Background: Previous research has hinted at a crucial link between gut microbiota and arterial embolism and thrombosis, yet the causal relationship remains enigmatic. To gain a deeper understanding, we aimed to comprehensively explore the causal relationship and elucidate the impact of the gut microbiota on the risk through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study. Methods: Genetic instrumental variables for gut microbiota were identified from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 18,340 participants. Summary statistics for IBS were drawn from a GWAS including 1,076 cases and 381,997 controls. We used the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method as the primary analysis. To test the robustness of our results, we further performed the weighted median method, MR-Egger regression, and MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier test. Results: We identified three bacterial traits that were associated with the risk of arterial embolism and thrombosis: odds ratio (OR): 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08-2.31, p = 0.017 for genus Catenibacterium; OR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.42-0.96, p = 0.031 for genus Dialister; and OR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.25-3.47, p = 0.005 for genus Odoribacter. The results of sensitivity analyses for these bacterial traits were consistent (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our systematic analyses provided evidence to support a potential causal relationship between several gut microbiota taxa and the risk of arterial embolism and thrombosis. More studies are required to show how the gut microbiota affects the development of arterial embolism and thrombosis.

Polysaccharides are generally considered to have immune enhancing functions, and mulberry leaf polysaccharide is the main active substance in mulberry leaves, while there are few studies on whether mulberry leaf polysaccharide (MLP) has an effect on immunosuppression and intestinal damage caused by cyclophosphamide (CTX), we investigated whether MLP has an ameliorative effect on intestinal damage caused by CTX. A total of 210 1-day-old Mahuang cocks were selected for this experiment. Were equally divided into six groups and used to evaluate the immune effect of MLP. Our results showed that MLP significantly enhanced the growth performance of chicks and significantly elevated the secretion of cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-10, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ), immunoglobulins and antioxidant enzymes in the serum of immunosuppressed chicks. It attenuated jejunal damage and elevated the expression of jejunal tight junction proteins Claudin1, Zo-1 and MUC2, which protected intestinal health. MLP activated TLR4-MyD88-NF-κB pathway and enhanced the expression of TLR4, MyD88 and NF-κB, which served to protect the intestine. 16S rDNA gene high-throughput sequencing showed that MLP increased species richness, restored CTX-induced gut microbiome imbalance, and enhanced the abundance of probiotic bacteria in the gut. MLP improves cyclophosphamide-induced growth inhibition and intestinal damage in chicks by modulating intestinal flora and enhancing immune regulation and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, this study provides a scientific basis for MLP as an immune enhancer to regulate chick intestinal flora and protect chick intestinal mucosal damage.

Objectives: This study explores the influences of different types of dormitory exercise on the negative emotions of quarantined Chinese college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In a 3-week intervention, participants self-selected into a rope skipping group (RSG), an aerobic exercise group (AEG), and a resistance exercise group (REG), while participants in the control group (CG) engaged, by choice, in no physical exercise. Exercise frequency was three times a week for 45 min, with an intensity of 60-80% of maximum heart rate. Before and after the intervention, all participants completed the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS). Student's t-test was used for intra-group comparisons, while ANOVA was used for inter-group comparisons. Results: Within the three exercise groups, there were some differences in the decrease levels of anxiety and depression, statistically significant at (p < 0.05); by contrast, the levels of anxiety and depression slightly increased in the CG group, again with statistical significance (p < 0.05). Comparing each of the RSG, AEG, and REG with the CG, we found some statistically significant differences in decreasing levels of anxiety and depression (p < 0.05). A comparison of the RSG and REG with the AEG also revealed some significant differences in levels of anxiety and depression (p < 0.05). However, the RSG and REG did not significantly differ in levels of anxiety and depression (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Long-term and strict dormitory quarantine led to different levels of anxiety and depression among quarantined college students. The three different types of medium-intensity dormitory exercise evidently decreased anxiety and depression levels of quarantined college students, but aerobic exercise had the greatest influence, while rope skipping and resistance exercise had equivalent effects.

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR) is an energy-saving and environmentally benign approach to synthesizing ammonia under ambient conditions. However, the development of noble metal-free catalysts with high activity and selectivity is still a significant challenge. In this study, uniformly dispersed amorphous CoBx nanoparticles supported on carbon paper were synthesized VIA a simple wet chemical reduction method. As an efficient nitrate reduction electrocatalyst, CoBx exhibited a maximum faradaic efficiency of 94.00 ± 1.67% and a yield rate of up to 0.787 ± 0.028 mmol h-1 cm-2 for ammonia production. The enhanced NitRR performance could be attributed to a partial electron transfer from B to Co, which is necessary for optimizing the adsorption energies of the reaction intermediates and facilitating electron transport. Thus, selective and cost-effective electroreduction of nitrates to ammonia can be achieved using CoBx nanoparticles.

Cuscuta australis is a widely distributed stem parasitic plant, infecting a variety of host plants. Its parasitism has a negative effect on the hosts, mainly due to the exhaustion of nutrients, thus negatively affecting the growth and development. However, recent studies indicated that the effect of parasitism may extend beyond the simple extraction of organic compounds, water, and minerals. In the present study, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana was used as a host for Cuscuta australis, to study the effect of the parasite on the photosynthetic parameters and the proteome after short-term infection. To test this, a highly sensitive portable photosynthesis system and gel-based MS/MS proteomics were employed. It was found that the parasite has a dramatic negative effect on the photosynthetic ability of the host, as well as causing the up-regulation of stress-related proteins. Simultaneously, proteins involved in both decreased permeability and loosening of the cell wall of the host were found to be up-regulated.

There is limited information available with regard to the association between serum leptin levels, or other adipokines, and serum lipid levels and insulin sensitivity in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Thus, the aim of the present study was to perform a meta-analysis investigating this association. Potential relevant studies were identified through searching the following databases: MEDLINE, Science Citation Index, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Chinese Biomedical, Chinese Journal Full-Text and Weipu Journal. Statistical analyses were calculated using version 12.0 STATA software. In total, 21 case-control studies comprising 1,187 subjects (574 patients and 613 controls) were collected for the meta-analysis. The results identified a statistically significant difference in the serum levels of leptin when comparing the PD patients with the healthy controls [controls vs. cases, standardized mean difference (SMD), 2.09; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.58-2.59; P<0.001]. Furthermore, ethnicity-subgroup analysis indicated that the PD patients of Asian and Caucasian populations were associated with increased serum levels of leptin (Asian population, SMD, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.48-2.62; P<0.001; Caucasian population, SMD, 2.19; 95% CI, 1.19-3.18; P<0.001). Therefore, serum leptin levels may be used as a prognostic marker for PD.
