RESUMEN

Eosinophil peroxidase is an eosinophil-specific, cytoplasmic protein stored in the secondary granules of eosinophils. While eosinophil peroxidase deposition is increased in the esophagus in eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE), its potential role as a peripheral marker is unknown. This study aims to examine the relationship between serum eosinophil peroxidase and esophageal eosinophilia in eosinophilic esophagitis. Prospectively collected serum from 19 subjects with incident EoE prior to treatment and 20 non-EoE controls were tested for serum eosinophil peroxidase, eosinophilic cationic protein, and eosinophil derived neurotoxin using ELISA. Matching esophageal tissue sections were stained and assessed for eosinophil peroxidase deposition using a histopathologic scoring algorithm. Mean peripheral blood absolute eosinophil counts in eosinophilic esophagitis subjects were significantly elevated compared to controls (363 vs. 195 cells/µL, P = 0.008). Absolute median serum eosinophil peroxidase, eosinophil cationic protein, and eosinophil derived neurotoxin did not differ between groups; however, when normalized for absolute eosinophil counts, eosinophilic esophagitis subjects had significantly lower median eosinophil peroxidase levels (2.56 vs. 6.96 ng/mL per eos/µL, P = 0.002, AUC 0.79 (0.64, 0.94 95% CI)). Multivariate analysis demonstrated this relationship persisted after controlling for atopy. Esophageal biopsies from eosinophilic esophagitis subjects demonstrated marked eosinophil peroxidase deposition (median score 46 vs. 0, P < 0.0001). Normalized eosinophil peroxidase levels inversely correlated with esophageal eosinophil density (r = -0.41, P = 0.009). In contrast to marked tissue eosinophil degranulation, circulating eosinophils appear to retain their granule proteins in EoE. Investigations of normalized serum eosinophil peroxidase levels as a biomarker of EoE are ongoing.

This study was conducted to determine the relationships of five intragenic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers (protein kinase adenosine monophosphate-activated γ3 subunit [PRKAG3], fatty acid synthase [FASN], calpastatin [CAST], high mobility group AT-hook 1 [HMGA1], and melanocortin-4 receptor [MC4R]) and meat quality traits of Duroc breeding stocks in Korea. A total of 200 purebred Duroc gilts from 8 sires and 40 dams at 4 pig breeding farms from 2010 to 2011 reaching market weight (110 kg) were slaughtered and their carcasses were chilled overnight. Longissimus dorsi muscles were removed from the carcass after 24 h of slaughter and used to determine pork properties including carcass weight, backfat thickness, moisture, intramuscular fat, pH24h, shear force, redness, texture, and fatty acid composition. The PRKAG3, FASN, CAST, and MC4R gene SNPs were significantly associated with the meat quality traits (p<0.003). The meats of PRKAG3 (A 0.024/G 0.976) AA genotype had higher pH, redness and texture than those from PRKAG3 GG genotype. Meats of FASN (C 0.301/A 0.699) AA genotype had higher backfat thickness, texture, stearic acid, oleic acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid than FASN CC genotype. While the carcasses of CAST (A 0.373/G 0.627) AA genotype had thicker backfat, and lower shear force, palmitoleic acid and oleic acid content, they had higher stearic acid content than those from the CAST GG genotype. The MC4R (G 0.208/A 0.792) AA genotype were involved in increasing backfat thickness, carcass weight, moisture and saturated fatty acid content, and decreasing unsaturated fatty acid content in Duroc meat. These results indicated that the five SNP markers tested can be a help to select Duroc breed to improve carcass and meat quality properties in crossbred pigs.

One-day-old Cherry valley meat-strain ducks were used to investigate the effect of supplemental dried oregano powder (DOP) in feed on the productivity, antioxidant enzyme activity, and breast meat quality. One hundred sixty five ducks were assigned to 5 dietary treatments for 42 days. The dietary treatment groups were control group (CON; no antibiotic, no DOP), antibiotic group (ANT; CON+0.1% Patrol), 0.1% DOP (CON+0.1% DOP), 0.5% DOP (CON+0.5% DOP), and 1.0% DOP (CON+1.0% DOP). Upon feeding, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of oregano extracts was higher than that of tocopherol, although it was less than that of ascorbic acid. As a result of in vivo study, DOP in the diet showed no effects on final body weight, feed intake, or feed conversion ratio. However, dietary 0.5% and 1% DOP supplementation caused a significant increase in the serum enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) compared with CON and ANT, while glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in tissue was increased as compared to ANT (p<0.05). Cooking loss from ducks fed with DOP decreased compared with the control ducks. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values of duck breast meat at 5 d post slaughter was found to be significantly reduced in ducks whose diets were supplemented with 0.5% and 1% DOP (p<0.05). These results suggest that diets containing 0.5% and 1% DOP may beneficially affect antioxidant enzyme activity of GPx and SOD, improve meat cooking loss, and reduce TBARS values in breast meat at 5 d of storage in ducks.

BACKGROUND: Although human adenovirus-36 (Ad-36) has been reported to be associated with obesity in US adults and children, Korean children and the Italian population, the association has not been found in Dutch or Belgian populations or in US military subjects. Therefore, we examined whether Ad-36 infection is associated with obesity in Korean adults. METHODS: A total of 540 age- and sex-matched individuals, who were normal weight, overweight or obese, were selected from participants in routine health examinations at the Ewha Womans University Medical Center. Overweight participants were defined as those with a body mass index (BMI) of 23 ≤ BMI<25 kg m(-2) and obese subjects were those with BMI ≥ 25 kg m(-2), according to the International Obesity Task Force definition. Ad-36 antibody was measured using a serum neutralization assay. RESULTS: Although more overweight participants than normal or obese subjects tested positive for the Ad-36 antibody (40%, 32.8% and 30%, respectively), the differences were not significant. The participants who tested positive for Ad-36 antibody had lower levels of triglycerides (TG) in each of the three groups, higher total cholesterol (TC) in the obese group and higher high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in both the normal and obese groups. The odds ratio (OR) for Ad-36 antibody positivity was greater in overweight than in normal subjects (OR=2.03; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.16-3.55) after adjusting for age, sex and waist circumference. However, this OR was non-significant in the obese group (OR=1.56; 95% CI, 0.67-3.67). CONCLUSION: Ad-36 seems to be strongly associated with overweight, but not obese, Korean adults.

Caenorhabditis elegans unc-44 mutations result in aberrant axon guidance and fasciculation with inappropriate partners. The unc-44 gene was cloned by transposon tagging, and verified by genetic and molecular analyses of six transposon-induced alleles and their revertants. Nucleotide sequence analyses demonstrated that unc-44 encodes a series of putative ankyrin-related proteins, including AO49 ankyrin (1815 aa, 198.8 kD), AO66 ankyrin (1867 aa, 204 kD), and AO13 ankyrin (< or = 4700 aa, < or = 517 kD). In addition to the major set of approximately 6 kb alternatively spliced transcripts, minor transcripts were observed at approximately 3, 5, 7, and 14 kb. Evidence is provided that mutations in the approximately 14-kb AO13 ankyrin transcript are responsible for the neuronal defects. These molecular studies provide the first evidence that ankyrin-related molecules are required for axonal guidance.

RESUMEN

We designed a double-layered polyimide film heater where the direction of the injection current of each layer is opposite to that of the other layer to reduce the magnetic field. The width of the heater is 0.125 mm and the resistance is 21.2 Ω. This specially designed heater successfully demonstrated temperature controllability within 10 mK for an atomic cell in an atom spin gyroscope while minimizing the generation of the magnetic field to within 1 nT.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Although capsule endoscopy has become a central diagnostic tool for small-bowel evaluation, retention of a capsule remains a major concern. This study attempted to investigate the incidence and clinical outcomes of capsule retention, and to determine the factors predictive of spontaneous capsule passage after retention. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Through a nationwide multicenter survey, we retrospectively reviewed the records of 1291 patients who had a capsule endoscopy between February 2002 and July 2006 in Korea. Clinical and procedural characteristics and postprocedural outcomes were analyzed for the cases with capsule retention. RESULTS: Capsule retention occurred in 2.5 % of total cases (32/1291). The major diseases accompanying capsule retention were Crohn's disease, malignant tumors, and tuberculous enterocolitis, in decreasing order. In 11 of the 32 patients (34.4 %), early surgical or endoscopic interventions were instituted for diagnosis or treatment of diseases before retention symptoms developed. The remaining 21 (65.6 %) patients initially received medical treatments. Of these, 10 (31.3 %) ultimately underwent surgical intervention due to the development of symptoms of intestinal obstruction or medical treatment failure. The other 11 (34.4 %) eventually passed the capsule. The presence of a larger lumen diameter (greater than two-thirds of the capsule diameter) at the stricture site was associated with spontaneous passage. CONCLUSIONS: Our large-scale study suggests that retention occurs infrequently during capsule endoscopy. Moreover, a retained capsule might indicate the best intervention for the offending pathology, or it may spontaneously pass in the long run, particularly in patients with less small bowel stricture.

When CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells are depleted or inactivated for the purpose of enhancing antitumor immunity, the risk of autoimmune disease may be significantly elevated because these regulatory T cells control both antitumor immunity and autoimmunity. To evaluate the relative benefit and risk of modulating CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells, we established a new test system to measure simultaneously the immune reactivity to a tumor-associated antigen, neu, and an unrelated self-antigen, thyroglobulin. BALB/c mice were inoculated with TUBO cells expressing an activated rat neu and treated with anti-CD25 monoclonal antibody to deplete CD25+ cells. The tumors grew, then regressed, and neu-specific antibodies and IFN-gamma-secreting T cells were induced. The same mice were also exposed to mouse thyroglobulin by chronic i.v. injections. These mice produced thyroglobulin-specific antibody and IFN-gamma-secreting T cells with inflammatory infiltration in the thyroids of some mice. The immune responses to neu or thyroglobulin were greater in mice undergoing TUBO tumor rejection and thyroglobulin injection than in those experiencing either alone. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental system to assess the concurrent induction and possible synergy of immune reactivity to defined tumor and self-antigens following reduction of regulatory T cells. These results illustrate the importance of monitoring immune reactivity to self-antigens during cancer immunotherapy that involves immunomodulating agents, and the pressing need for novel strategies to induce antitumor immunity while minimizing autoimmunity.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of providing oxygenated and hydrogenated water on the growth performance, blood biochemical parameters, and immunoglobulin concentrations and antioxidant enzyme activity of broiler chickens. In our investigation, 144 Ross × Ross broiler chicks were randomly allotted to three different treatment groups with four replicates (treatment × replicate × bird = 3 × 4 × 12). All chicks were given one of the following types of water for five weeks: tap water (CON), hydrogenated water (HNW), and oxygenated water (ONW). ONW supplementation increased the final body weight and weight gain and also improved both feed intake and feed conversion of broiler chickens as compared to those of CON broiler chickens (P < 0.05). The abdominal fat and its ratio to the final body weight showed that fat accumulation in the broiler chicken abdomen was reduced when broiler chickens drank only ONW for five weeks (P < 0.05). ONW supplementation improved blood parameters, including triacylglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Additionally, in accordance with a globulin increase in broiler chickens, both IgG and IgM generation were significantly enhanced when ONW was supplied to broiler chickens (P < 0.05) but only a numerical advance was observed in the HNW group (P > 0.05). Both oxygenated and hydrogenated water supplementation significantly improved the antioxidant effects (P < 0.05), and it seems that superoxide dismutase refinement was completed due to oxygen and/or hydrogen enhancement of drinking water. These results indicate that oxygen enhancement of drinking water may be recommended to improve growth performance by increasing immunoglobulins mainly IgG and IgM.

Sprouty (SPRY) appears to act as a tumor suppressor in cancer, whereas we demonstrated that SPRY2 functions as a putative oncogene in colorectal cancer (CRC) (Oncogene, 2010, 29: 5241-5253). We investigated the mechanisms by which SPRY regulates epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in CRC. SPRY1 and SPRY2 mRNA transcripts were significantly upregulated in human CRC. Suppression of SPRY2 repressed AKT2 and EMT-inducing transcription factors and significantly increased E-cadherin expression. Concurrent downregulation of SPRY1 and SPRY2 also increased E-cadherin and suppressed mesenchymal markers in colon cancer cells. An inverse expression pattern between AKT2 and E-cadherin was established in a human CRC tissue microarray. SPRY2 negatively regulated miR-194-5p that interacts with AKT2 3' untranslated region. Mir-194 mimics increased E-cadherin expression and suppressed cancer cell migration and invasion. By confocal microscopy, we demonstrated redistribution of E-cadherin to plasma membrane in colon cancer cells transfected with miR-194. Spry1(-/-) and Spry2(-/-) double mutant mouse embryonic fibroblasts exhibited decreased cell migration while acquiring several epithelial markers. In CRC, SPRY drive EMT and may serve as a biomarker of poor prognosis.

The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance, torsional resistance, and metallurgical characteristics of conventional NiTi wire (V taper 2, V2) and CM wire (V taper 2H, V2H)-based files. Cyclic fatigue and torsional resistance of V2 and V2H were investigated by measuring the number of cycles to fracture, maximum torque at fracture, and maximum angle at fracture. The typical patterns of fatigue and torsional fractures were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The metallurgical characteristics were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) from -100 °C to 100 °C. The austenite finishing temperature (Af) of each instrument was also measured. The microstructures of the instruments were investigated by a transmission electron microscope (TEM) along with selected area diffraction pattern analysis. The results were statistically analyzed by Mann-Whitney U-test (p = 0.05). V2H showed significantly higher cyclic fatigue resistance and torsional resistance than V2. SEM images of the fractured surfaces showed typical patterns of fatigue and torsional fracture. The DSC analysis of V2 showed one small peak in both the heating and cooling curves. The Af of V2 was -0.32 °C. V2H showed two remarkable peaks in the heating curve and one remarkable peak in the cooling curve. The Af of V2H was 33.25 °C. The TEM analysis showed that both V2 and V2H are mainly composed of austenite. In conclusion, V2H showed higher cyclic fatigue resistance and torsional resistance than V2. The superior properties of V2H could be attributed to the annealing effect and possibly the martensite phase. SCANNING 38:564-570, 2016. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Chemotherapy is an adjuvant treatment for glioblastomas, however, chemotherapy remains palliative because of the development of multidrug resistance (MDR). Following prolonged chemotherapy, MDR protein 1 (MDR1) and CD133 increase in recurrent glioblastomas. CD133 positive (CD133+) glioma cancer stem-like cells (GCSCs) markedly promote drug resistance and exhibit increased DNA damage repair capability; thus they have a key role in determining tumor chemosensitivity. Although CD133, DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK), and MDR1 are elevated in CD133+ GCSCs, the relationship among these molecules has not been elucidated. In this study, MDR glioblastoma cell lines were created in response to prolonged doxorubicin chemotherapy. CD133, DNA-PK and MDR1 were markedly elevated in these cells. CD133 and DNA-PK may increase MDR1 via the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt signal pathway. PI3K downstream targets Akt and nuclear factor (NF)-κB, which interacts with the MDR1 promoter, were also elevated in these cells. Downregulation of CD133 and DNA-PK by small interfering RNA, or inhibition of PI3K or Akt, decreased Akt, NF-κB and MDR1 expression. The results indicate that CD133 and DNA-PK regulate MDR1 through the PI3K- or Akt-NF-κB signal pathway. Consequently, a novel chemotherapeutic regimen targeting CD133 and DNA-PK in combination with traditional protocols may increase chemotherapeutic efficacy and improve prognosis for individuals who present with glioblastoma.

In this study, a simple dual sludge process was developed for small sewage treatment. It is a hybrid system that consists of upflow multi-layer bioreactor (UMBR) as anaerobic and anoxic reactor with suspended growth microorganisms and post aerobic biofilm reactor with inclined plates. UMBR is a multifunction reactor that acts as primary sedimentation tank, anaerobic reactor, anoxic reactor, and thickener. The sludge blanket in the UMBR is maintained at a constant level by automatic control so that clear water (30 mg-SS/L) can flow into the post aerobic biofilm reactor. It leads to improving performance of the biofilm reactor due to preventing of excess microbial attachment on the media surface and no requirment for a large clarifier caused by low solid loading. The HRT in the UMBR and the aerobic biofilm reactor were about 5.8 h and 6.4 h, respectively. The temperature in the reactor during this study varied from 12.5 degrees C to 28.3 degrees C. The results obtained from this study show that effluent concentrations of TCOD, TBOD, SS, TN, and TP were 29.7 mg/L, 6.0 mg/L, 10.3 mg/L, 12.0 mg/L, and 1.8 mg/L, which corresponded to a removal efficiency of 92.7%, 96.4%, 96.4%, 74.9%, and 76.5%, respectively. The sludge biomass index (SBI) of the excess sludge in the UMBR was about 0.55, which means that the sludge in the UMBR was sufficiently stabilized and may not require further treatment prior to disposal.

To investigate the role of cyclooxygenase (COX) as a mediator for prostaglandin synthesis in relation to generation of reactive oxidant species (ROS), we quantitated the COX-derived ROS generation and the gene expression of COX-2, an inducible form of COX in aged kidney. In addition, the modulation by dietary restriction was investigated. COX-derived ROS generation increased with age in ad libitum (AL) rats, but dietary restriction (DR) suppressed the level. The amounts of COX-2 protein and mRNA increased with age in AL rats but maintained at low levels in DR group. It was found that the binding characteristics of a nuclear transcription factor, NF-kappaB were altered by aging. The binding activity of NF-kappaB in aged kidney was significantly enhanced with the corresponding increase in mRNA and protein levels. These increases were closely in parallel to the increased ROS generation and gene expression of COX-2. The COX activity shown by NF-kappaB activation and the ROS generation by COX-mediated process were all modulated by DR. Our results suggest that the upregulation of COX-2 during aging may play an important role in many age-related diseases associated with aging process. And this upregulation was attenuated by DR. We propose that the modulation of the redox-sensitive transcription factor may well be a part of the mechanisms underpinning the anti-oxidative action of DR.

We investigated the dose-related effect of the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/leucovorin regimen on survival in 139 colon cancer patients with Dukes' B2 and C2 stage disease. Chemotherapy consisted of 400 mg/m(2) of 5-FU and 20 mg/m(2) of leucovorin injected daily for 5 days in every 4 weeks for a maximum of 12 cycles. The total dose of 5-FU administered per body surface area had a significant effect on the 5-year disease-free survival and 5-year overall survival in stage B2 and C2 colon cancer patients (P=0.0018, P=0.0011). Analysis with reference to the median DSDI demonstrated that there was a significant difference in 5-year survival in Dukes' C2 (P=0.0016), but survival was not affected by the dose intensity. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that only the total dose of 5-FU administered per surface area affected the 5-year disease-free survival and 5-year overall survival (P=0.0016, P=0.0007, respectively). It can be concluded that the total dose of 5-FU administered is important in planned dosage schedule of adjuvant chemotherapy in colon cancer.

PURPOSE: To determine how retinoids regulate the phospholipase C (PLC) gene in the Drosophila visual system. METHODS: Western blotting, activity analyses and immunocytochemistry were applied to Drosophila reared on various diets. RESULTS: Western blots and activity analyses showed that retinoid deprivation decreases PLC, the product of the norpA gene, by approximately 1/3 to 1/2 in Drosophila. Immunocytochemistry using standard and confocal fluorescence microscopy confirmed the expectation that PLC is localized to the photoreceptive rhabdomeres. Rhabdomeres of flies that were retinoid deprived, or reared on other diets devoid of chromophore precursors, fluoresced brightly. These observations are consistent with earlier morphometric analyses showing that retinoid deprivation decreases the size of rhabdomeres. In a separate control, rhabdomeric PLC was shown to be virtually eliminated by retinoid deprivation in transgenic Drosophila where the norpA coding sequence was driven by the opsin promoter. CONCLUSIONS: PLC is decreased by retinoid deprivation. Retinoid control of PLC is indirect, as expected, since the norpA promoter is so different from the promoter for rhodopsin's gene. PLC is not eliminated by deprivation but decreases in proportion to the associated decrease in rhabdomere size which, in turn, is caused by the opsin decrease. By contrast, opsin is controlled by retinoids both translationally by chromophore availability and transcriptionally. The fact that PLC is eliminated by retinoid deprivation when opsin's promoter drives the PLC gene is important evidence substantiating retinoid control via opsin's promoter.

This study was undertaken to investigate serially the development, progression, and healing of acute pancreatitis which was induced in rats by the closed duodenal loop technique. Edematous changes appeared within 2 to 4 h. Pancreatic blood flow increased at 1 h and tended to decrease after 3 h. After injection of fesin into the loop, fesin appeared in the periacinar space and acinar cells after 4 h. Electron microscopy showed that partial destruction of the plasma membrane occurred and serum amylase increased considerably at the same time, suggesting that the initial inflammatory changes caused the release of pancreatic enzymes at approximately 4 h. After elimination of the causal factors, edematous pancreatitis healed completely but hemorrhagic acute pancreatitis was not completely healed 6 months later.

Osteosarcoma is one of the most common juvenile malignant tumors in Korea. Combined modality treatment (pre-operative chemotherapy + limb salvage surgery + adjuvant therapy) improved the patients' overall survival and quality of life. We evaluated the efficacy and feasibility of pre-operative chemotherapy with intra-arterial (IA) cisplatin plus continuous intravenous infusion (CI) of adriamycin. We assessed the rate of limb salvage, recurrence pattern and the survival impact based on the histologic response of pre-operative chemotherapy. Fourty-one patients with histologically-proven high grade osteosarcoma of the extremities were enrolled from January 1990 to June 1995. Pre-operative chemotherapy, cisplatin 120 mg/m2 IA and adriamycin 75 mg/m2/72 h CI was administered every 3 weeks for 3 cycles, followed by limb salvage surgery if possible or by amputation. According to the histologic tumor response, if the tumor necrosis was >90%, the same regimen was administered for 3 cycles as an adjuvant therapy. A salvage regimen (Ifosfamide 7.5 gm/m2/5 d IV + high dose MTX 10 gm/m2 IV+VP-16 360 mg/m2/3 d IV) was administered every 3 weeks for 6 cycles if the tumor necrosis was <90%. Of 41 patients, 37 patients were evaluable for efficacy and toxicities, because 4 patients refused chemotherapy after 1 or 2 cycles. Twenty-one patients were male and 16 were female with median age of 16 years (range 8-41). The tumor locations were: distal femur 20, proximal tibia 8, humerus 6, distal tibia 2 and 1 in proximal femur. All but one patient, who died of neutropenic sepsis, completed the planned pre-operative therapy. Of the 36 patients who received surgery, limb salvage surgery was possible in 30 patients (83.3%) and 27 patients (75%) showed a good response (grade III 10; 27.8%, grade IV 17; 47.2%). With a median follow-up of 23 months, 3-year disease-free survival rate was 54.7% and overall survival rate was 78.3%. Of the 15 patients who recurred, the major metastatic site was the lung. No operation-related mortality was observed. Most patients experienced grade III-IV nausea, vomiting and hematologic toxicities, which were reversible with supportive cares. Pre-operative chemotherapy with IA DDP+CI ADR followed by surgery showed 75% histologic tumor response rate, 83% limb salvage rate and 54.7% 3-year disease-free survival rate with tolerable side effects. To improve the survival rate, the possible role of good salvage chemotherapy with a non-cross resistance regimen in poor responders should be evaluated.

We measured the sero-positivity rate of serum alpha-fetoprotein (alphaFP) of gastric cancer patients by ELISA assay; forty-two curatively resected patients, 14 palliatively resected patients, 8 who received explo-laparotomy or bypass surgery and 18 patients with systemic metastasis. The sero-positive rate was 9.8% (8/82) and the positivity increased with cancer progression. Sex, age and pathological type were similar between alphaFP-positive and -negative patients. The overall synchronous hepatic metastasis rates in alphaFP-positive and alphaFP-negative groups were 37.5% (3/8) and 12.2% (9/74), respectively (p=0.08). The predictability of synchronous liver metastasis in eight alphaFP-positive patients were as follows: 37. 5% of total patients (3/8), 50.0% (3/6) of unresectable patients, and 60.0% (3/5) of patients with systemic metastasis. In three alphaFP-positive patient with liver metastasis, all the hepatic lesions were intrahepatic and multiple, while in alphaFP-negative patients, 67% (6/9) of the hepatic lesions was single intrahepatic lesion or surface nodule. The predictability of both synchronous and metachronous liver metastasis in alphaFP-positive gastric cancer patients was 75%. These findings suggested that, in advanced stomach cancer patients, especially in stage IV, alphaFP can be used in predicting liver metastasis during follow-up.
