RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the assessment of attitudes about poverty used in nursing education considering the first Sustainable Development Goal targets. Tools assessing attitudes about poverty have been used in nursing education studies to examine the beliefs of nursing students. DESIGN: An integrative literature review was carried out in five international databases in the areas of health and nursing and in four Latin American and Caribbean databases. RESULTS: Four tools were identified, with Attitude Toward Poverty Short Form and Attitudes about Poverty and Poor People being the most used in the studies. Items from tools measured attitudes negative, prejudiced, and stigmatizing about the population living in poverty. In addition, items from tools measured a range of concepts from poverty to social inequality and disenfranchisement. CONCLUSION: The identification of poverty is a critical strategy for tackling poverty. In this sense, poverty assessment tools have the potential to recognize poverty as a multidimensional phenomenon.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the expression of sociopolitical-emancipatory knowledge, based on the participation of women-nurses in social movements, and the implications for nursing care. METHODS: a research-interference, whose data were obtained from narrative interviews with six women-nurses inserted in social movements and with political representation. Data were submitted to discourse analysis, based on Michel Foucault. RESULTS: women-nurses' social and political involvement is driven by the contexts of life and work, marked by gender inequalities. Ability to criticize oneself, the profession and health policies and practices are presented as expressions of sociopolitical-emancipatory knowledge. Nursing care is conceived as a political practice that, influenced by learning from social movements, must go through a denial of the historically performed form. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: participation in social movements triggers sociopolitical-emancipatory knowledge, resulting in differentiated care, a way of acting oriented towards reducing inequalities.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the discourses of health professionals about technologies in home care. METHOD: Qualitative research conducted in four public home care services in Minas Gerais. Data obtained from interviews with 52 professionals submitted to Critical Discourse Analysis. Results: The results indicate the functional and economic-financial discourse about the technologies. The economic discourse is dominant and reveals the contradiction between investing in high-cost equipment and the insufficiency of basic inputs for care. There is a tendency to reproduce hospital-centered logic with high technological density. The inventiveness and a process of adaptation at home are evidenced. CONCLUSION: The discourses of health professionals indicate that the circumstances of home care are determinants of the adaptations and improvisations that occur in this context and are due to the contradictions between innovating, inventing, and investing in technologies in home care.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to analyze higher education in the health area in Brazil according to the results of the students' performance in the 2019 National Student Performance Examination. METHOD: a cross-sectional and retrospective study with a quantitative approach and online data referring to 192,715 students from 3,712 health courses, collected in 2020. The students' performance was expressed in concepts, ordered on a scale of one to five. Box-plots were prepared, prevalence values of the concepts were estimated, and the differences were evaluated through statistical tests (α=5%) according to the administrative and management characteristics, as well as those of the cities where the courses were offered. RESULTS: there was a satisfactory level of higher education in health (70.0% with a score ≥3). The Medicine courses were the most satisfactorily evaluated while Speech Therapy and Nursing obtained the worst scores. Public, face-to-face and university education were associated with better teaching quality. Lower levels were found in the North region states, in small towns, outside metropolitan areas and in those under private management. CONCLUSION: heterogeneity in the quality of higher education across the health courses was verified, indicating its association with the characteristics of the teaching institutions and with the infrastructure of the cities where the courses are offered, pointing out challenges to the quality of health education in Brazil.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to analyze the nursing systems of understanding and social inequalities from the perspective of student leaders and representatives of nursing professional organizations. METHODS: qualitative research supported by the theoretical framework of Marxist dialectics. Threerepresentatives of professional organizations and five student leaders participated in the study. Datawere obtained from individual interviews and submitted to Critical Discourse Analysis. RESULTS: thediscourses are marked by commitment, relational identification and characterize the position of obligation and necessity of nursing in acting with the individuals in situations of inequality, indicating accountability as a social practice. Among the competencies necessary for nursing in confronting social inequalities, political competence is central and is associated with health advocacy. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: we conclude that acting on social inequalities is part of the historical construction of nursing. Here, we emphasized the historical importance of Florence Nightingale and her legacy for political action and leadership in nursing.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the offering of the first graduate certificate program in nursing in the state of Minas Gerais, called "Graduate Certificate Course in Obstetrics" (Curso de Pós-Graduação em Obstetrícia), by the Nursing School Carlos Chagas, in 1966, and its contribution to the professionalization of obstetric nursing. METHOD: this is a documentary, socio-historical study, based on the Sociology of Professions by Freidson. RESULTS: the data collected allowed the following thematic composition: academic organization of the graduate certificate program and differentials and discontinuities of the first graduate certificate program at the Nursing School Carlos Chagas, with two categories delineated: "Construction of specific knowledge for obstetric nursing" and "Enhancement of specialized knowledge for scientific notoriety". CONCLUSION: The first offering of a graduate certificate program in nursing by the Nursing School Carlos Chagas at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais was a milestone in the history of nursing in Minas Gerais and of the institution itself for being groundbreaking and having attracted students from other states, with repercussions in Brazil. This protagonism supported the professionalization course in the state and in the country, contributing to the scientific notoriety of the institution and of the professional category.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to know the professional trajectory of the black nurse Maria Barbosa Fernandes and to analyze elements of her professional practice based on the cultural competence model of CampinhaBacote. METHODS: historical-social study with an analysis of the findings in light of the Cultural Competence model. RESULTS: Maria Barbosa was the first black woman to earn a nursing degree at the Escola de Enfermagem Carlos Chagas (Carlos Chagas Nursing School) (1935-1938), and the documentation about her history allowed us to infer the experience of discrimination and invisibility. However, her professional trajectory was marked by careful attention to the singularities and the sociocultural reality of individuals, with an emphasis on acting in vulnerable scenarios. Final Considerations: the pairing of the theme of black women in nursing with the reference of Cultural Competence consists of an invitation to value diversity in the profession and seek to move towards care committed to overcoming inequalities, through inclusive practices and culturally sensitive care.

ABSTRACTObjective: to understand the masculinities of men in home care based on male ethosconstruction. Method: qualitative research aligned with Raewyn Connell's conception of masculinities and critical discourse analysis based on Norman Fairclough's theoretical-methodological framework. A total of 58 users were interviewed between patients and caregivers of a home care public service. Results: two discursive centralities were identified: hegemonic masculinity and its ideologies; and the new male ethos: the admission of dependency. The presence of a non-hegemonic masculinity is perceived among the men in home care, whose particular home experiences favor historical, social, and cultural changes, giving rise to new concepts, meanings, and experiences. Conclusion: the masculine ethosof men cared for at home is marked by the condition of differentiation, it is aligned with a subordinate masculinity, although it is based on dominant ideologies. This new masculine ethos allows, in other analyses, to recognize the needs and the behavior of men in home care.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the theoretical and methodological application of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy in the scientific production of nursing. METHOD: An integrative review was carried out with consultation of the databases: LILACS, BDENF, MEDLINE, PUDMED and CINHAL. We included studies in the Spanish, English and Portuguese languages, published from 1990 to 2017. RESULTS: A total of 38 articles were analyzed, of which the main concepts adopted were: dialogue/dialogicity, awareness/critical awareness and questioning. Regarding the application of the method, it was noticed the predominance of the adoption of elements such as culture circles, thematic phase and horizontality relation of the nurse with the individuals involved. CONCLUSION: Nursing has partially appropriated the Freire's referential. However, it reveals the intentionality of a transformative practice that requires deepening for the implementation of the method in its full.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the care production in a public hospital and the devices used for comprehensive care. Method: This was a health interference study, in which data collection was carried out from September 2019 to June 2022. Observations and field researcher diary records, individual interviews were conducted with coordinators and managers, and focus groups with workers, of a large hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The empirical material was submitted to thematic content analysis. Results: Devices that contribute to the construction of new management and care practices were identified. These included the Lean in Emergencies project (Fast Track, Kanban, and Huddles tools); the Internal Regulation Unit; the role of hospitalist physicians, co-managers, and shift coordinators; the work of the home care team within the hospital; and devices for interdisciplinary management, such as interdisciplinary bed runs, case discussions, and shared construction of therapeutic projects. Conclusion: The implemented devices contribute to the transformation of the health production model and work process in favor of integrating the hospital into the healthcare system.
