RESUMEN

Liquid methanol has the potential to be the hydrogen energy carrier and storage medium for the future green economy. However, there are still many challenges before zero-emission, affordable molecular H2 can be extracted from methanol with high performance. Here, we present noble-metal-free Cu-WC/W plasmonic nanohybrids which exhibit unsurpassed solar H2 extraction efficiency from pure methanol of 2,176.7 µmol g-1 h-1 at room temperature and normal pressure. Macro-to-micro experiments and simulations unveil that local reaction microenvironments are generated by the coperturbation of WC/W's lattice strain and infrared-plasmonic electric field. It enables spontaneous but selective zero-emission reaction pathways. Such microenvironments are found to be highly cooperative with solar-broadband-plasmon-excited charge carriers flowing from Cu to WC surfaces for efficient stable CH3OH plasmonic reforming with C3-dominated liquid products and 100% selective gaseous H2. Such high efficiency, without any COx emission, can be sustained for over a thousand-hour operation without obvious degradation.

BACKGROUND Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is associated with atherosclerosis and cardiovascular mortality in patients with kidney failure. Aortic stiffness (AS), measured primarily by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), reflects vascular aging and precedes end-organ failure. This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum Lp(a) levels and cfPWV in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, which included 148 patients with long-term PD for end-stage kidney failure, cfPWV was measured using a cuff-based method. AS was defined as a cfPWV exceeding 10 m/s, and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine serum Lp(a) levels. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify the clinical correlates of AS. RESULTS There were 32 (21.6%) patients diagnosed with AS. Based on the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio for AS was 1.007 (95% confidence interval, 1.003-1.011; P=0.001) for every 1 mg/L increase in Lp(a) levels. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that Lp(a) (P<0.001), age (P=0.003), waist circumference (P=0.008), systolic blood pressure (P=0.010), and diabetes mellitus (P<0.001) were positively associated with cfPWV. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for Lp(a) in differentiating AS from non-AS was 0.770 (95% confidence interval, 0.694-0.835; P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Serum Lp(a) level was independently associated with cfPWV and AS in patients with PD.

RESUMEN

Mpox was diagnosed in 2 women returning to Vietnam from the United Arab Emirates. The monkeypox viruses belonged to an emerging sublineage, A.2.1, distinct from B.1, which is responsible for the ongoing multicountry outbreak. Women could contribute to mpox transmission, and enhanced genomic surveillance is needed to clarify pathogen evolution.

RESUMEN

We analyzed 1,303 SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequences from Vietnam, and found the Alpha and Delta variants were responsible for a large nationwide outbreak of COVID-19 in 2021. The Delta variant was confined to the AY.57 lineage and caused >1.7 million infections and >32,000 deaths. Viral transmission was strongly affected by nonpharmaceutical interventions.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease worldwide, and is related to disturbed lipid metabolism and redox homeostasis. However, a definitive drug treatment has not been approved for this disease. Studies have found that electromagnetic fields (EMF) can ameliorate hepatic steatosis and oxidative stress. Nevertheless, the mechanism remains unclear. METHODS: NAFLD models were established by feeding mice a high-fat diet. Simultaneously, EMF exposure is performed. The effects of the EMF on hepatic lipid deposition and oxidative stress were investigated. Additionally, the AMPK and Nrf2 pathways were analysed to confirm whether they were activated by the EMF. RESULTS: Exposure to EMF decreased the body weight, liver weight and serum triglyceride (TG) levels and restrained the excessive hepatic lipid accumulation caused by feeding the HFD. The EMF boosted CaMKKß protein expression, activated AMPK phosphorylation and suppressed mature SREBP-1c protein expression. Meanwhile, the activity of GSH-Px was enhanced following an increase in nuclear Nrf2 protein expression by PEMF. However, no change was observed in the activities of SOD and CAT. Consequently, EMF reduced hepatic reactive oxygen species (ROS) and MDA levels, which means that EMF relieved liver damage caused by oxidative stress in HFD-fed mice. CONCLUSIONS: EMF may activate the CaMKKß/AMPK/SREBP-1c and Nrf2 pathways to control hepatic lipid deposition and oxidative stress. This investigation indicates that EMF may be a novel therapeutic method for NAFLD.

The supracerebellar infratentorial (SCIT) approach is commonly used to gain access to the lateral mesencephalic sulcus (LMS), which has been established as a safe entry point into the posterolateral midbrain. This study describes a lateral variant of the SCIT approach, the supreme-lateral SCIT approach, for accessing the LMS through the presigmoid retrolabyrinthine craniectomy and quantitatively compares this approach with the paramedian and extreme-lateral SCIT approaches. Anatomical dissections were performed in four cadaveric heads. In each head, the supreme-lateral SCIT approach was established on one side, following a detailed description of each step, whereas the paramedian and supreme-lateral SCIT approaches were established on the other side. Quantitative measurements of the exposed posterolateral midbrain, the angles of LMS entry, and the depth of surgical corridors were recorded and compared between the three SCIT approach variants. The supreme-lateral (67.70 ± 23.14 mm2) and extreme-lateral (70.83 ± 24.99 mm2) SCIT approaches resulted in larger areas of exposure anterior to the LMS than the paramedian SCIT approach (38.61 ± 9.84 mm2); the supreme-lateral SCIT approach resulted in a significantly smaller area of exposure posterior to the LMS (65.24 ± 6.81 mm2) than the other two variants (paramedian = 162.75 ± 31.98 mm2; extreme-lateral = 143.10 ± 23.26 mm2; both P < .001). Moreover, the supreme-lateral SCIT approach resulted in a surgical corridor with a shallower depth and a smaller angle relative to the horizontal plane than the other two variants. The supreme-lateral SCIT approach is a more lateral approach than the extreme-lateral SCIT approach, providing a subtemporal approach with direct LMS visualization. The supreme-lateral SCIT offers the benefits of both subtemporal and SCIT approaches and represents a suitable option for the management of selected midbrain pathologies.

Medical images are used as an important basis for diagnosing diseases, among which CT images are seen as an important tool for diagnosing lung lesions. However, manual segmentation of infected areas in CT images is time-consuming and laborious. With its excellent feature extraction capabilities, a deep learning-based method has been widely used for automatic lesion segmentation of COVID-19 CT images. However, the segmentation accuracy of these methods is still limited. To effectively quantify the severity of lung infections, we propose a Sobel operator combined with multi-attention networks for COVID-19 lesion segmentation (SMA-Net). In our SMA-Net method, an edge feature fusion module uses the Sobel operator to add edge detail information to the input image. To guide the network to focus on key regions, SMA-Net introduces a self-attentive channel attention mechanism and a spatial linear attention mechanism. In addition, the Tversky loss function is adopted for the segmentation network for small lesions. Comparative experiments on COVID-19 public datasets show that the average Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and joint intersection over union (IOU) of the proposed SMA-Net model are 86.1% and 77.8%, respectively, which are better than those in most existing segmentation networks.

Epitaxial growth is a powerful tool for synthesizing heterostructures and integrating multiple functionalities. However, interfacial mixing can readily occur and significantly modify the properties of layered structures, particularly for those containing energy storage materials with smaller cations. Here, we show a two-step sequence involving the growth of an epitaxial LiCoO2 cathode layer followed by the deposition of a binary transition metal oxide. Orientation-controlled epitaxial synthesis of the model solid-state-electrolyte Li2WO4 and anode material Li4Ti5O12 occurs as WO3 and TiO2 nucleate and react with Li ions from the underlying cathode. We demonstrate that this lithiation-assisted epitaxy approach can be used for energy materials discovery and exploring different combinations of epitaxial interfaces that can serve as well-defined model systems for mechanistic studies of energy storage and conversion processes.

Disruptions in glucose metabolism are frequently observed among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) who utilize glucose-containing dialysis solutions. We aimed to investigate the relationship between glucometabolic indices, including fasting glucose, insulin resistance, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), PD-related glucose load, and icodextrin usage, and aortic stiffness in PD patients with and without diabetic mellitus (DM). This study involved 172 PD patients (mean age 58.3 ± 13.5 years), consisting of 110 patients without DM and 62 patients with DM. Aortic stiffness was assessed using the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV). Impaired fasting glucose was defined as a fasting glucose level ≥ 100 mg/dL. Homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) scores, serum AGEs, dialysate glucose load, and icodextrin usage were assessed. Patients with DM exhibited the highest cfPWV (9.9 ± 1.9 m/s), followed by those with impaired fasting glucose (9.1 ± 1.4 m/s), whereas patients with normal fasting glucose had the lowest cfPWV (8.3 ± 1.3 m/s), which demonstrated a significant trend. In non-DM patients, impaired fasting glucose (ß = 0.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.01-1.03, p = 0.046), high HOMA-IR (ß = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.12-1.08, p = 0.015), and a high PD glucose load (ß = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.08-1.08, p = 0.023) were independently associated with increased cfPWV. In contrast, none of the glucometabolic factors contributed to differences in cfPWV in DM patients. In conclusion, among PD patients without DM, impaired fasting glucose, insulin resistance, and PD glucose load were closely associated with aortic stiffness.

The most commonly used model in constructed wetlands is the first-order removal model, and first order kinetic constants (k) are the key parameters. The presumption is often made that k are constants. However, it is possible that k are functions of operating conditions, but the influence of operation conditions on k is unclear. In this study, response surface methodology was used to explore the variation patterns of ka (area rate constants) and kV (volume rate constants) for the removal of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in free water surface (FWS) wetlands. The experimental variables included hydraulic loading rate (HLR), water depth, and inlet concentration (Cin). The results showed that kV was more variable than ka, and the area-based first-order model is more suitable for simulating TN and TP in FWS wetlands. Inlet concentration (Cin) was significant for ka; Cin and water depth were significant for kV; HLR and the interaction between factors were insignificant. The effects of Cin on ka and kV can be described by an upward convex quadratic curve, while the effect of water depth on kV demonstrates a downward convex quadratic curve. The first-order area rate constant for TN removal was given by k = -47.66 + 22.01 Cin - 1.154 Cin2; the first-order area rate constant for TP removal was given by k = -27.75 + 95.88 Cin - 30.73 Cin2. Based on the variation patterns, the traditional k-C model was modified to the kψ-C model. The kψ-C model produced the best results at simulating the outlet concentration and removal efficiency (RE).

Several studies have explored the biological activities of Citrus aurantium flowers, fruits, and seeds, but the bioactivity of C. aurantium leaves, which are treated as waste, remains unclear. Thus, this study developed a pilot-scale ultrasonic-assisted extraction process using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) for the optimized extraction of active compounds from C. aurantium leaves, and their antityrosinase, antioxidant, antiaging, and antimicrobial activities were evaluated. Under optimal conditions in a 150× scaleup configuration (a 30 L ultrasonic machine) of a pilot plant, the total phenolic content was 69.09 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight, which was slightly lower (3.17%) than the theoretical value. The half maximal inhibitory concentration of C. aurantium leaf extract (CALE) for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-scavenging, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-scavenging, antityrosinase, anticollagenase, antielastase and anti-matrix metalloprotein-1 activities were 123.5, 58.5, 181.3, 196.4, 216.3, and 326.4 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, the minimal inhibitory concentrations for bacteria and fungi were 150-350 and 500 mg/L, respectively. In total, 17 active compounds were detected in CALE-with linalool, linalyl acetate, limonene, and α-terpineol having the highest concentrations. Finally, the overall transdermal absorption and permeation efficiency of CALE was 95.9%. In conclusion, our CALE demonstrated potential whitening, antioxidant, antiaging, and antimicrobial activities; it was also nontoxic and easily absorbed into the skin as well as inexpensive to produce. Therefore, it has potential applications in various industries.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a global environmental pollutant. To reduce the risk caused by Cr(VI), a simple, accurate, reproducible, and inexpensive method for quantifying Cr(VI) in water and soil should be developed. In this study, three types of recombinant Escherichia coli biosensors (namely T7-lux-E. coli, T3-lux-E. coli, and SP6-lux-E. coli biosensor) containing promoters (T7, T3, and SP6), chromate-sensing regulator chrB, and the reporter gene luxAB were constructed. This study investigated the effects of cryogenic freezing temperature and time on trace Cr(VI) measurement by using recombinant E. coli biosensors. The results indicated that the activity of thawed frozen SP6-lux-E. coli cells stored at -20 °C for 270 days did not differ from that of freshly prepared cells. Turbidity and conductivity in water samples and organic matter in soil interfered with Cr(VI) measurement using the biosensor. The SP6-lux-E. coli biosensor exhibited a wide measurement range and a low deviation of <5% for measuring Cr(VI) in various Cr(VI)-contaminated water and soil samples and required only a simple pretreatment or extraction process even after 270-day storage at -20 °C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the use of recombinant biosensors for accurately measuring Cr(VI) in both water and soil.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is currently an incurable cancer. Genome-wide association studies have demonstrated that 41 genetic variants are associated with glioblastoma and may provide an option for drug development. METHODS: We investigated FDA-approved antipsychotics for their potential treatment of glioblastoma based on genome-wide association studies data using a 'pathway/gene-set analysis' approach. RESULTS: The in-silico screening led to the discovery of 12 candidate drugs. DepMap portal revealed that 42 glioma cell lines show higher sensitivities to 12 candidate drugs than to Temozolomide, the current standard treatment for glioblastoma. CONCLUSION: In particular, cell lines showed significantly higher sensitivities to Norcyclobenzaprine and Protriptyline which were predicted to bind targets to disrupt a certain molecular function such as DNA repair, response to hormones, or DNA-templated transcription, and may lead to an effect on survival-related pathways including cell cycle arrest, response to ER stress, glucose transport, and regulation of autophagy. However, it is recommended that their mechanism of action and efficacy are further determined.

Heterointerfaces have led to the discovery of novel electronic and magnetic states because of their strongly entangled electronic degrees of freedom. Single-phase chromium compounds always exhibit antiferromagnetism following the prediction of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. So far, exchange coupling between chromium ions via heteroanions has not been explored and the associated quantum states are unknown. Here, we report the successful epitaxial synthesis and characterization of chromium oxide (Cr_{2}O_{3})-chromium nitride (CrN) superlattices. Room-temperature ferromagnetic spin ordering is achieved at the interfaces between these two antiferromagnets, and the magnitude of the effect decays with increasing layer thickness. First-principles calculations indicate that robust ferromagnetic spin interaction between Cr^{3+} ions via anion-hybridization across the interface yields the lowest total energy. This work opens the door to fundamental understanding of the unexpected and exceptional properties of oxide-nitride interfaces and provides access to hidden phases at low-dimensional quantum heterostructures.

The diversity of fused filament fabrication (FFF) filaments continues to grow rapidly as the popularity of FFF-3D desktop printers for the use as home fabrication devices has been greatly increased in the past decade. Potential harmful emissions and associated health risks when operating indoors have induced many emission studies. However, the lack of standardization of measurements impeded an objectifiable comparison of research findings. Therefore, we designed a chamber-based standard method, i.e., the strand printing method (SPM), which provides a standardized printing procedure and quantifies systematically the particle emission released from individual FFF-3D filaments under controlled conditions. Forty-four marketable filament products were tested. The total number of emitted particles (TP) varied by approximately four orders of magnitude (109  ≤ TP ≤ 1013 ), indicating that origin of polymers, manufacturer-specific additives, and undeclared impurities have a strong influence. Our results suggest that TP characterizes an individual filament product and particle emissions cannot be categorized by the polymer type (e.g., PLA or ABS) alone. The user's choice of a filament product is therefore decisive for the exposure to released particles during operation. Thus, choosing a filament product awarded for low emissions seems to be an easily achievable preemptive measure to prevent health hazards.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Adequate decompression is the primary goal during surgical management of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Therefore, it may seem counterintuitive to use minimally-invasive strategies to treat these patients. However, recent studies show that endoscopic-assisted minimally-invasive neurosurgery (MIN) can provide both adequate decompression (which is critical for preserving viable brain tissue) and maximize neurological recovery for patients with TBI. Hence, we reviewed the pertinent literature and shared our experiences on the use of MIN. METHODS: This was a retrospective multi-center study. We collected data of 22 TBI patients receiving endoscopic-assisted MIN within 72 hours after the onset, with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores of 6-14 and whose hemorrhage volume ranging from 30 to 70 mL. RESULTS: We have applied MIN techniques to a group of 22 patients with traumatic ICH (TICH), epidural hematoma (EDH), and subdural hematoma (SDH). The mean pre-operative GCS score was 7.5 (median 7), and mean hemorrhage volume was 57.14 cm3 Surgery time was shortened with MIN approaches to a mean of 59.6 min. At 6-month follow-up, the mean GCS score had improved to 12.3 (median 15). By preserving more normal brain tissue, MIN for patients with TBI can result in beneficial effects on recoveries and neurological outcomes. CONCLUSION: Endoscopic-assisted MIN in TBI is safe and effective in a carefully selected group of patients.

RESUMEN

The advent of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDs) has led to an extensive amount of interest amongst scientists and engineers alike and an intensive amount of research has brought about major breakthroughs in the electronic and optical properties of 2D materials. This in turn has generated considerable interest in novel device applications. With the polymorphic structural features of 2D-TMDs, this class of materials can exhibit both semiconducting and metallic (quasi-metallic) properties in their respective phases. This polymorphic property further increases the interest in 2D-TMDs both in fundamental research and for their potential utilization in novel high-performance device applications. In this review, we highlight the unique structural properties of few-layer and monolayer TMDs in the metallic 1T- and quasi-metallic 1T'-phases, and how these phases dictate their electronic and optical properties. An overview of the semiconducting-to-(quasi)-metallic phase transition of 2D-TMD systems will be covered along with a discussion on the phase transition mechanisms. The current development in the applications of (quasi)-metallic 2D-TMDs will be presented ranging from high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices to energy storage, catalysis, piezoelectric and thermoelectric devices, and topological insulator and neuromorphic computing applications. We conclude our review by highlighting the challenges confronting the utilization of TMD-based systems and projecting the future developmental trends with an outlook of the progress needed to propel this exciting field forward.

Impurity doping is a viable route toward achieving desired subgap optical response in semiconductors. In strongly excitonic two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), impurities are expected to result in bound-exciton emission. However, doped TMDs often exhibit a broad Stokes-shifted emission without characteristic features, hampering strategic materials engineering. Here we report observation of a well-defined impurity-induced emission in monolayer WS2 substitutionally doped with rhenium (Re), which is an electron donor. The emission exhibits characteristics of localized states and dominates the spectrum up to 200 K. Gate dependence reveals that neutral impurity centers are responsible for the observed emission. Using GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) calculations, we attribute the emission to transitions between spin-split upper Re band and valence band edge.

ABSTRACT: Acupuncture and dry needling share many similarities in their proposed mechanisms of action and their sports medicine-related applications. Pain is the most common indication for these needling treatments, but there also are some limited studies on their use for ergogenic purposes. Needling can likely improve muscular strength and power, including increasing jump height, and it also can increase flexibility. In terms of sports recovery, acupuncture can not only be used for pain relief after injury, but also can help with routine recovery, such as in delayed onset muscle soreness. There are numerous case reports of acupuncture and dry needling being used to treat athletes for various diagnoses and conditions, however more high quality studies are needed in order to make more specific evidence-based recommendations. Given the high degree of safety and limited adverse events associated with needling treatments, it can likely be promoted in athletes.
