RESUMEN

Endothelial dysfunction is an independent risk factor for stroke. The dysfunction of endothelial cells (EC) is closely concerned with EC senescence. Gastrodin (GAS) is an organic compound extracted from the dried root mass of the Orchidaceae plant Gastrodiae gastrodiae. It is used clinically to treat diseases such as vertebrobasilar insufficiency, vestibular neuronitis and vertigo. In the present study, we used hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 )-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to establish an in vitro EC senescence model and to investigate the role and mechanism of GAS in EC senescence. It's found that H2 O2 -treated HUVECs increased the proportion of senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA ß-gal) positive cells and the relative protein expression levels of senescence-associated cyclin p16 and p21. In addition, GAS reduced the proportion of SA ß-gal positive cells and the relative protein expression levels of p16 and p21, and increased the proliferation and migration ability of HUVECs. Meanwhile, GAS increased the expression of the anti-oxidative stress protein HO-1 and its nuclear expression level of Nrf2. The anti-senescence effect of GAS was blocked when HO-1 expression was inhibited by SnPPIX. Furthermore, absence of HO-1 abolished the effect of GAS on HUVEC proliferation and migration. In conclusion, GAS ameliorated H2 O2 -induced cellular senescence and enhanced cell proliferation and migration by enhancing Nrf2/HO-1 signalling in HUVECs. These findings of our study expanded the understanding of GAS pharmacology and suggested that GAS may offer a potential therapeutic agent for stroke.

RESUMEN

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based transparent and superhydrophobic coatings have important applications, such as anti-icing, corrosion resistance, self-cleaning, etc. However, their applications are limited by the inevitable introduction of nanoparticles/high-temperature/segmented PDMS to facilitate a raspy surface. In this study, a self-roughed, neat PDMS superhydrophobic coating with high transparency is developed via a one-step spray-coating technique. PDMS suspensions with various droplet sizes are synthesized and used as building blocks for raspy surface formation by controlled curing on the warm substrate. The optimal coating exhibits a large water contact angle of 155.4° and transparency (T550 = 82.3%). Meanwhile, the employed spray-coating technique is applicable to modify a plethora of substrates. For proof-of-concept demonstrations, the use of the PDMS hydrophobic coating for anti-liquid-interference electrothermal devices and further transparent observation window for long-term operation in a sub-zero environment is shown successful. The proposed facile synthesis method of hydrophobic PDMS coating is expected to have great potential for a broad range of applications in the large-scale fabrication of fluorine-free, eco-friendly superhydrophobic surfaces.

RESUMEN

In this work, the concentration of rare-earth ions in doped silica whispering gallery lasers (WGLs) is controlled by evaporation. The fabrication of WGLs is used to experimentally evaluate the evaporation rate (mol/µm) and ratio (mol/mol) of erbium and silica lost from a doped fiber during heating. Fixed lengths of doped silica fiber are spliced to different lengths of undoped fiber and then evaporated by feeding into the focus of a CO2 laser. During evaporation, erbium ions are precipitated in the doped silica fiber to control the erbium concentration in the remaining SiO2, which is melted into a microsphere. By increasing the length of the undoped section, a critical point is reached where effectively no ions remain in the glass microsphere. The critical point is found using the spectra of the whispering gallery modes in microspheres with equal sizes. From the critical point, it is estimated that, for a given CO2 laser power, 6.36 × 10-21 mol of Er3+ is lost during the evaporation process for every cubic micron of silica fiber. This is equivalent to 1.74 × 10-7 mol of Er3+ lost per mol of SiO2 evaporated. This result facilitates the control of the doping concentration in WGLs and provides insight into the kinetics of laser-induced evaporation of doped silica.

RESUMEN

Lithium niobate (LN) crystal plays important roles in future integrated photonics, but it is still a great challenge to efficiently fabricate three-dimensional micro-/nanostructures on it. Here, a femtosecond laser direct writing-assisted liquid back-etching technology (FsLDW-LBE) is proposed to achieve the three-dimensional (3D) microfabrication of lithium niobate (LN) with high surface quality (Ra = 0.422 nm). Various 3D structures, such as snowflakes, graphic arrays, criss-cross arrays, and helix arrays, have been successfully fabricated on the surface of LN crystals. As an example, a microcone array was fabricated on LN crystals, which showed a strong second harmonic signal enhancement with up to 12 times bigger than the flat lithium niobate. The results indicate that the method provides a new approach for the microfabrication of lithium niobate crystals for nonlinear optics.

RESUMEN

In this Letter, we demonstrate a sensitivity-enhanced strain sensor based on a shape-modulated multimode fiber (MMF). In contrast to conventional single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS) fiber structures, which typically contain a single cylindrical homogeneous MMF section, the shape of the MMF section in this investigation is modulated by lateral offset splicing of multiple MMF segments. Simulation results show that the designed shape-modulated MMF has a higher peak mechanical strain than that of a cylindrical MMF. Experimental results demonstrate that the strain sensitivity achieved by the shaped-modulated MMF-formed SMS fiber structure is as high as -55.63 pm/µÎµ, which is 33 times higher than that for a cylindrical MMF-formed conventional SMS fiber structure at -1.65 pm/µÎµ. This high sensitivity and low-fabrication cost SMS fiber sensor has the potential to be a promising candidate in precise strain measurement applications.

RESUMEN

Increasing evidence indicated that protein arginine methyltransferase-1 (PRMT1) is an oncogene in multiple malignant tumors, including osteosarcoma (OS). The aim of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism of PRMT1 in OS. The effects of PRMT1 or BCAT1, branched-chain amino acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1) on OS cell proliferation, invasion, autophagy, and apoptosis in vitro were examined. Moreover, molecular control of PRMT1 on c-Myc or transactivation of BCAT1 on c-Myc was assessed by chromatin immunoprecipitation and quantitative reverse transcription PCR assays. The effects of PRMT1 in vivo were examined with a xenograft tumor model. The results showed that PRMT1 was potently upregulated in OS tissues and cells. Upregulation of PRMT1 markedly increased OS cell proliferation and invasion in vitro and reduced cell apoptosis, whereas PRMT1 silencing showed the opposite effects. Cisplatin, one of the most effective chemotherapeutic drugs, improved cell survival rate by inducing the expression of PRMT1 to downregulate the cisplatin sensitivity. Meanwhile, the cisplatin-induced upregulation of PRMT1 expression caused dramatically autophagy induction and autophagy-mediated apoptosis by inactivating the mTOR signaling pathway, which could be reversed by 3-methyladenine, an autophagy inhibitor, or PRMT1 silencing. PRMT1 could activate c-Myc transcription and increase c-Myc-mediated expression of BCAT1. Furthermore, BCAT1 overexpression counteracted the effects of PRMT1 knockdown on cell proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis. Of note, deficiency of PRMT1 suppressed tumor growth in vivo. PRMT1 facilitated the proliferation and invasion of OS cells, inhibited cell apoptosis, and decreased chemotherapy sensitivity through c-Myc/BCAT1 axis, which may become potential target in treating OS.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical efficacy of arthroscopic TightRope loop titanium button and clavicular hook plate in the treatment of acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation of Rockwood III/IV. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with ACJ dislocation in our hospital from January 2018 to December 2020 was conducted. The patients were assigned to be treated with arthroscopic TightRope loop titanium button (TR group) or clavicular hook plate (HP group). The preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative data and imaging findings of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: A total of 58 eligible patients were enrolled in this study. Compared with HP group, TR group had shorter incision length and less blood loss during operation. Postoperative follow-up ranged from 12 to 24 months (mean 15.4 months). At 6 months and 12months postoperatively, compared with HP group, TR group had lower VAS and higher CMS, and the difference was statistically significant. At 12 months postoperatively, compared with HP group, TR group had lower ACJ gap and coracoclavicular joint(CCJ) distance, and the difference was statistically significant. In HP group, there were 3 cases of subacromial impact, 1 case of redislocation, 2 cases of traumatic arthritis and 2 cases of wound infection. There was 1 case of redislocation in TR group. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with clavicular hook plate, arthroscopic TightRope loop titanium button is minimally invasive, safe and effective in the treatment of ACJ dislocation, and has a good trend in clinical application.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Aseptic loosening around the prosthesis is a common cause of failure in total joint arthroplasty. Polyethylene wear particles trigger the release of inflammatory factors by macrophages. Key mediators involved in osteoclastogenesis include interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (RANK), RANK ligand (RANKL), and bone protection hormone (Osteoprotegerin [OPG]). The purpose of our experiment was to see whether melittin can slow down the release of inflammatory mediators through the NF-kB pathway, regulate the RANKL/OPG ratio, reduce osteoclast formation, and delay the onset of arthritis in rats. METHODS: A total of 20 male Sprague-Dawley rats (10 months, Specific Pathogen Free, 350 g ± 20 g) were randomly divided into 5 groups: sham group, model group, melittin concentration 1 group (0.2 mg/kg), concentration 2 group (0.4 mg/kg), and concentration 3 group (0.6 mg/kg). All rats were implanted with TA2 high-purity titanium rods. A drill was used to create a bone canal along the long axis of the femur in the intercondylar notch. The model group and experimental groups were exposed to polyethylene particles, while the sham group did not receive any particles. RESULTS: The melittin group exhibited significantly increased serum levels of serum P, calcium-phosphorus product, OPG, PINP, PINP/CTX-I, and OPG/RANKKL (P < .05). In the experimental group, micro computed tomography scanning results revealed a decrease in the amount of bone defect around the prosthesis. Immunofluorescence analysis demonstrated a decrease in the expression of IKKα and P65, while the expression of OPG showed an upward trend. Both Hematoxylin-Eosin and Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase staining revealed less osteoclast and inflammatory cell infiltration in bone resorption pits. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that melittin has the ability to inhibit the NF-kB pathway in a rat model, and reduce the impact of RANKL/OPG, thereby delaying osteoclast activity and alleviating periprosthetic osteolysis.

RESUMEN

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common head and neck malignancy. The oncometabolites have been studied in OSCC, but the mechanism of metabolic reprogramming remains unclear. To identify the potential metabolic markers to distinguish malignant oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissue from adjacent healthy tissue and study the mechanism of metabolic reprogramming in OSCC. We compared the metabolites between cancerous and paracancerous tissues of OSCC patients by 1HNMR analysis. We established OSCC derived cell lines and analyzed their difference of RNA expression by RNA sequencing. We investigated the metabolism of γ-aminobutyrate in OSCC derived cells by real time PCR and western blotting. Our data revealed that much more γ-aminobutyrate was produced in cancerous tissues of OSCC patients. The investigation based on OSCC derived cells showed that the increase of γ-aminobutyrate was promoted by the synthesis of glutamate beyond the mitochondria. In OSCC cancerous tissue derived cells, the glutamate was catalyzed to glutamine by glutamine synthetase (GLUL), and then the generated glutamine was metabolized to glutamate by glutaminase (GLS). Finally, the glutamate produced by glutamate-glutamine-glutamate cycle was converted to γ-aminobutyrate by glutamate decarboxylase 2 (GAD2). Our study is not only benefit for understanding the pathological mechanisms of OSCC, but also has application prospects for the diagnosis of OSCC.

RESUMEN

Simultaneous blue-red emission in a fiber pumped by a single wavelength source is perceived as a great challenge because of the large energy difference of the emitted photons. This Letter reports the dependence of the blue-to-red upconversion (UC) emission ratio in Yb3+-Tm3+ codoped fluorosilicate glasses (FSGs) under the excitation of a 980-nm laser on the host glass silica content. Photoluminescence spectra and SEM-EDS are used to clarify the UC mechanism, indicating that the probability of the cross-relaxation (CR) process 1G4 + 3F2→3H6 + 3F4 is key to the dominance of the blue or red emissions. This research can provide a new platform for variable UC luminescence.

RESUMEN

In this Letter, we demonstrate a high-sensitivity vector bend sensor based on a fiber directional coupler. The fiber directional coupler is composed of two parallel waveguides inscribed within a no-core fiber (NCF) by a femtosecond laser. Since the two written waveguides have closely matched refractive indices and geometries, the transmission spectrum of the fiber directional coupler possesses periodic resonant dips. Such a fiber directional coupler exhibits a good bending-dependent spectral shift response due to its asymmetric structure. Experimental results show that bending sensitivities of -97.11 nm/m-1 and 58.22 nm/m-1 are achieved for the 0° and 180° orientations in the curvature range of 0-0.62 m-1, respectively. In addition, the proposed fiber directional coupler is shown to be insensitive to external humidity changes, thus improving its suitability in high-accuracy bending measurements.

RESUMEN

Hot melt compression treatment is a new technology in which traditional pressure dehydration is combined with thermal effects to achieve improved liquid/solid separation with low energy consumption. A dewatering process combining the mechanical expression with the heating treatment of space solid waste is proposed in this paper. Temperatures of 130-180 °C and a mechanical load of 0-8 MPa were employed on the drying behavior of space solid waste and product distribution with a self-designed hot press experimental setup. Experimental results showed that mechanical compression employed at increased temperatures had revealed a significant benefit in water recovery, resulting in the highest reduction of 95.5% of the moisture content. Considering the dehydration efficiency, the dewatering process of solid waste showed a positive effect at 160 °C and 6 MPa with a residence time of 100 min. At the same time, the reusability and chemical evolution were characterized comprehensively. The results showed that the condensed water had great potential to be reused as drinking water in the space station. Moreover, from an integrated perspective involving gaseous emissions, oxygen-containing functional groups accounting for 51.58-76.01% were the main components of the gas products. Halohydrocarbon was identified as the key volatile pollutant during the process of hot compression. In conclusion, this study gives a detailed insight into the hot melt compression behavior of space waste and offers potential opportunities and benefits for space solid waste treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: 3D printing technology has become a research hotspot in the field of scientific research because of its personalized customization, maneuverability and the ability to achieve multiple material fabrications. The focus of this study is to use 3D printing technology to customize personalized poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) porous screws in orthopedic plants and to explore its effect on tendon-bone healing after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. METHODS: Preparation of PLLA porous screws with good orthogonal pore structure by 3D printer. The hydroxyapatite (HA) was adsorbed on porous screws by electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly (ELSA) technology, and PLLA-HA porous screws were prepared. The surface and spatial morphology of the modified screws were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The porosity of porous screw was measured by liquid displacement method. Thirty New Zealand male white rabbits were divided into two groups according to simple randomization. Autologous tendon was used for right ACL reconstruction, and porous screws were inserted into the femoral tunnel to fix the transplanted tendon. PLLA group was fixed with porous screws, PLLA-HA group was fixed with HA modified porous screws. At 6 weeks and 12 weeks after surgery, 5 animals in each group were sacrificed randomly for histological examination. The remaining 5 animals in each group underwent Micro-CT and biomechanical tests. RESULTS: The pores of PLLA porous screws prepared by 3D printer were uniformly distributed and connected with each other, which meet the experimental requirements. HA was evenly distributed in the porous screw by ELSA technique. Histology showed that compared with PLLA group, mature bone trabeculae were integrated with grafted tendons in PLLA-HA group. Micro-CT showed that the bone formation index of PLLA-HA group was better than that of PLLA group. The new bone was uniformly distributed in the bone tunnel along the screw channel. Biomechanical experiments showed that the failure load and stiffness of PLLA-HA group were significantly higher than those of PLLA group. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D printed PLLA porous screw modified by HA can not only fix the grafted tendons, but also increase the inductivity of bone, promote bone growth in the bone tunnel and promote bone integration at the tendon-bone interface. The PLLA-HA porous screw is likely to be used in clinic in the future.

RESUMEN

Odorant receptors (ORs) are essential for plant-insect interactions. However, despite the global impacts of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) as major herbivores and pollinators, little functional data are available about Lepidoptera ORs involved in plant-volatile detection. Here, we initially characterized the plant-volatile-sensing function(s) of 44 ORs from the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera, and subsequently conducted a large-scale comparative analysis that establishes how most orthologous ORs have functionally diverged among closely related species whereas some rare ORs are functionally conserved. Specifically, our systematic analysis of H. armigera ORs cataloged the wide functional scope of the H. armigera OR repertoire, and also showed that HarmOR42 and its Spodoptera littoralis ortholog are functionally conserved. Pursuing this, we characterized the HarmOR42-orthologous ORs from 11 species across the Glossata suborder and confirmed the HarmOR42 orthologs form a unique OR lineage that has undergone strong purifying selection in Glossata species and whose members are tuned with strong specificity to phenylacetaldehyde, a floral scent component common to most angiosperms. In vivo studies via HarmOR42 knockout support that HarmOR42-related ORs are essential for host-detection by sensing phenylacetaldehyde. Our work also supports that these ORs coevolved with the tube-like proboscis, and has maintained functional stability throughout the long-term coexistence of Lepidoptera with angiosperms. Thus, beyond providing a rich empirical resource for delineating the precise functions of H. armigera ORs, our results enable a comparative analysis of insect ORs that have apparently facilitated and currently sustain the intimate adaptations and ecological interactions among nectar feeding insects and flowering plants.

RESUMEN

This study explored the function of circular RNA VMA21 (circVMA21) in osteoarthritis (OA). IL-1ß inducement reduced the expression of circVMA21 in C28/I2 cells and human primary chondrocytes. Forced expression of circVMA21 heightened cell viability and attenuated cell apoptosis, accompanied by upregulation of Bcl-2, and downregulation of Bax and C-caspase-3 in C28/I2 cells in response to IL-1ß exposure. CircVMA21 overexpression diminished the expression of MMP1 and MMP13, augmented the expression of COL2A1, and impeded the production of IL-6, TNF-α, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and NO. CircVMA21 served as a competitive endogenous RNA by sponging miR-495-3p. F-box and WD40 domain protein 7 (FBWX7) was identified as a target of miR-495-3p. The compensation experiments affirmed that circVMA21-mediated protective effects on IL-1ß-irritated chondrocytes through the miR-495-3p/FBWX7 axis. The role of circVMA21 was also confirmed in an OA rat model. Collectively, these findings revealed a protective effect of circVMA21in OA by intercepting the miR-495-3p/FBWX7 crosstalk.

RESUMEN

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a common viral pathogen that infects more than a third of the world's population; however, the transmission route remains to be further defined. The 18-year implementation of the free HBV vaccine for children has greatly changed the prevalence of HBV infection in China, which presents a unique real-world model for assessing the pattern of HBV transmission. Cross-sectional data of HBV seromarkers between July 2019 and April 2020 were collected from 53 371 individuals aged 1-60 years in four areas of North to South in Eastern China. Longitudinal data of HBV seromarkers between 2007 and 2020 were collected from 177 adults in an area of South China. The regional- and age-specific changes in HBV seromarkers were analyzed. Overall, positive rates of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg; from 3.44% to 15.1%) and antibody against HBV core antigen (anti-HBc; from 7.6% to 44.0%) significantly increased from North to South. Among persons aged ≤18 years, the positive rates of antibody against HBsAg (anti-HBs) and anti-HBc (+) remained at low levels in the North, while they were increasing among persons aged >12 years in the South, despite higher positive rates of anti-HBs (+). Among persons aged >18 years, the anti-HBs (+) rates remained relatively stable (~60%), while anti-HBc (+) rates increased significantly with age. Up to ~80% of the anti-HBs (+) adults in the South was anti-HBc (+) while it was 13.6% in the North. In the longitudinal cohort, the anti-HBc (+) rate among adults in the South increased by 14.2% during 10 years of follow-up. Horizontal transmission might be a common route in highly endemic areas, and may help to explain the high HBV exposure worldwide. The risk of horizontal transmission among children without seroprotective anti-HBs should be notified in highly endemic areas.

RESUMEN

Airy beams have provided exciting inspiration in the field of optical communication, particle manipulation, and imaging. We investigate the propagation properties of the exponential truncation Airy beams (ETABs) on constant Gaussian curvature surfaces (CGCSs) in this paper. The analytical expression of the electric field of ETABs propagating on the CGCSs is derived. It shows that the equivalent periodical accelerations of the trajectories of ETABs on the curved surface are always larger than the constant one on the flat surface because the CGCSs have a strong focusing ability. For the same reason, the non-diffraction propagation of ETABs is found when the focusing ability of the CGCSs is strong enough. Moreover, we investigate the self-healing length of ETABs on CGCSs and explore that the ability of self-healing is related to the geometry of CGCSs besides the width of the block and the size of the beam. The self-healing length gets larger with the increase of radius of CGCSs and finally consists with that on the flat surface. These propagation characteristics are different from those in the flat space and are useful for the future applications of ETABs in particle manipulation on waveguides, light-sheet fluorescence microscopy, curved nanophotonics, and so on.

RESUMEN

Capillary fiber (CF) has been extensively investigated in a singlemode fiber (SMF)-CF-SMF (SCS) sensing structure since multiple light guiding mechanisms can be easily excited by simply tuning the air core diameter (cladding diameter) and length of the CF. Understanding the light guiding principles in an SCS structure is essential for improved implementation of a CF based fiber sensor. In this work, light guiding principles in a relatively large air core diameter (≥ 20 µm) and long length of CF (> 1 mm) are investigated theoretically and experimentally. It is found that both multimode interference (MMI) and Anti-Resonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide (ARROW) light guiding mechanisms are excited in the SCS structure in the transmission configuration. However, MMI dips are not observed in the spectrum for the air core diameters of CF smaller than 50 µm in the experiment due to large transmission loss in small air core CFs. Further experimental results demonstrate that a CF with a bigger air core diameter shows a higher sensitivity to curvature, and the highest sensitivity of -16.15 nm/m-1 is achieved when an CF-100 was used. In addition, a SMF-CF-20-CF-30-SMF (SCCS) structure is proposed for high sensitivity bi-direction liquid level measurement for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Two types of ARROW dips (Dip-20 and Dip-30) are simultaneously excited in transmission, hence both liquid level and liquid flow direction can be detected by tracing the dip strength changes of Dip-20 and Dip-30, respectively.

The construction of multiple light guidance mechanisms in a hollow-core fiber (HCF) structure is a popular way to realize the simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters. In this work, a partial coating method to excite multiple anti-resonant light guidance mechanisms (ARLGMs) in an HCF structure for the simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters is proposed. As an example, a double ARLGM based on a partially polyimide (PI)-coated HCF structure for the simultaneous measurement of relative humidity (RH) and temperature is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The dip (dip II) produced by the PI-coated HCF section shifts linearly with surrounding RH changes with a sensitivity of circa 58.6 ± 0.77 pm/%RH, while the dip (dip I) produced by the bare HCF section (with an air coating layer) is insensitive to RH changes. In addition, both types of dips have linear responses to temperature variations, with similar sensitivities of ∼ 17 pm/°C. Hence, the proposed sensor structure can be used as an RH sensor that is also capable of compensating for local temperature fluctuations. More importantly, the simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters (such as biomarkers) is possible using the proposed method provided the proper sensing materials are partially coated onto the HCF surface.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Studies focusing on the relationship between gastric volume and facemask oxygenation without ventilation during apnea in anesthesia induction are scarce. This study compared the change in gastric volume during apnea in anesthesia induction using facemask ventilation and facemask oxygenation without ventilation in adults undergoing laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial, 70 adults undergoing laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia were divided into two groups to receive facemask oxygenation with and without ventilation for 60 seconds after loss of consciousness. Before anesthesia induction and after endotracheal intubation, the gastric antral cross-sectional area was measured with ultrasound imaging. Arterial blood gases were tested at baseline (T1), after preoxygenation (T2), after loss of consciousness (T3), and before and after endotracheal intubation (T4 and T5, respectively). RESULTS: Sixty patients were included (ventilation n = 30; non ventilation n = 30, 10 patients were excluded). The median [IQR] change of gastric antral cross-sectional area in ventilation group was significantly higher than in non ventilation group (0.83 [0.20 to 1.54] vs. 0.10 [- 0.11 to 0.56] cm2, P = 0.001). At T4 and T5, the PaO2 in ventilation group was significantly higher than in non ventilation group (T4: 391.83 ± 61.53 vs. 336.23 ± 74.99 mmHg, P < 0.01; T5: 364.00 ± 58.65 vs. 297.13 ± 86.95 mmHg, P < 0.01), while the PaCO2 in non ventilation group was significantly higher (T4: 46.57 ± 5.78 vs. 37.27 ± 6.10 mmHg, P < 0.01; T5: 48.77 ± 6.59 vs. 42.63 ± 6.03 mmHg, P < 0.01) and the pH value in non ventilation group was significantly lower (T4: 7.35 ± 0.029 vs 7.42 ± 0.047, P < 0.01; T5: 7.34 ± 0.033 vs 7.39 ± 0.044, P < 0.01). At T4, the HCO3- in non ventilation group was significantly higher (25.79 ± 2.36 vs. 23.98 ± 2.18 mmol l- 1, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: During apnoea, the increase in gastric volume was milder in patients undergoing facemask oxygenation without ventilation than with positive pressure ventilation.
