RESUMEN

A 28-year-old woman was admitted with a sudden loss of vision in the right eye. She underwent renal transplantation in June 1999 for chronic renal failure secondary to amyloidosis. Upon ophthalmologic examination, the patient was diagnosed with central retinal vein occlusion. Physical and laboratory examinations failed to disclose any remarkable pathology except for high homocysteine levels. Hyperhomocysteinemia has been reported as a potential risk factor requiring treatment and a significant association has been found between this condition and central retinal vein thrombosis.

RESUMEN

We investigated cytological changes in oral mucosa smears from patients treated with cryotherapy to determine whether cryotherapy prevented mucositis caused by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) therapy. Patients with gastrointestinal malignancies were divided into four groups; control patients before 5-FU therapy, patients after 5-FU therapy without cryotherapy, patients with cryotherapy before 5-FU therapy and patients with cryotherapy after 5-FU therapy. Oral mucosa samples from all patients were assessed at the beginning and on day 14 of chemotherapy. We used exfoliative cytology to evaluate cellular changes in the oral mucosa that were caused by 5-FU. Smears from each patient were stained using the Papanicolaou method and analyzed using stereology. Smears were taken from each group before and after 5-FU infusion. We found that nuclear volume was decreased significantly in cells of the 5-FU therapy after cryotherapy patients compared to the 5-FU therapy before cryotherapy patients. We also found significantly decreased cytoplasmic volumes in the 5-FU therapy after cryotherapy patients compared to the 5-FU therapy before cryotherapy patients. The results of cytomorphometric estimations revealed that cryotherapy may be used to prevent damage to oral tissue and may decrease the frequency and duration of oral mucositis caused by 5-FU.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, an evaluation was made of the relationship between the serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), osteopontin (OPN), and the semi-quantitative parameters of 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG PET/CT) in lung cancer patients with bone metastasis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The evaluation included 42 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and 31 small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients who were referred to our institution for staging by (18)F-FDG PET/CT. The biochemical parameters measured included CEA and OPN serum levels. RESULTS: Serum levels of OPN in NSCLC patients with and without bone metastasis were 21.20±4.97 ng/ml and 13.33±4.53 ng/ml, respectively (p<0.05). In SCLC patients with and without bone metastasis serum OPN levels were 23.95±4.78 ng/ml and 17.30±3.09 ng/ml, respectively (p<0.05). Serum levels of CEA in NSCLC patients with and without bone metastasis were 33.79±6.49 ng/ml and 11.74±2.96 ng/ml, respectively (p<0.05). In SCLC patients with and without bone metastasis serum levels of CEA were 28.93±4.59 ng/ml and 13.88±4.47 ng/ml, respectively (p<0.05). There were no correlations between primary tumor SUVmax, and serum levels of CEA and OPN. CONCLUSIONS: Bone metastasis can be detected in patients with lung cancer by measuring CEA and OPN levels. Increased levels of CEA and OPN levels may be considered an early warning sign in patients needing accurate imaging, as they are at higher risk of bone metastasis.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Although gastric cancer is a frequent cancer type, disseminated intravascular coagulation is a very rare but serious complication of this disease. We report a 65-year-old man who complained of weight loss, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and dyspnoea for three days. He was diagnosed as having advanced gastric cancer complicated with disseminated intravascular coagulation, which was successfully treated with mFOLFOX chemotherapy regimen. After one cycle of mFOLFOX therapy, thrombocytopenia was improved and serum lactate dehydrogenase levels decreased. Remarkable remission was seen. After 12 cycles of chemotherapy, remarkable remission was seen in the primary tumour and multiple metastatic bone lesions.

Paraffin embedded tissue sections and fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) are important methods for diagnosis. We compared thyroid tissue obtained by FNAB to paraffin embedded sections to determine whether there were differences in detection of the amounts of argyrophilic nucleolar organizing region (AgNOR) proteins. Twenty-two patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma were included in the study. Slides were prepared with both FNAB tissue and 3 µm sections of paraffin embedded tissue, and stained for AgNOR. One hundred nuclei per individual were evaluated; total AgNOR number/nucleus (TAn/TNn) and total AgNOR area/nuclear area (TAa/TNa) of individual cells were determined. Mean TAn/TNn and TAa/TNa values were 4.800 ± 1.118 and 13.382 ± 2.612, respectively, for FNAB samples; corresponding values were 2.406 ± 0.649 and 8.49 ± 0.893, respectively, for paraffin embedded sections. The differences between FNAB materials and paraffin embedded tissue sections were significant for the mean TAn/TNn and TAa/TNa values. Significant differences in the amounts of AgNOR protein detected were found between FNAB and paraffin embedded tissue sections.
