BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aimed to develop a protocol that combines cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), software, and 3D printing to design 3D replicas for tooth autotransplantation. The goal was to evaluate the impact of this approach on the extraoral time of the donor teeth and the total surgical time, thereby enhancing surgical efficiency and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A non-randomized trial (protocol 10.1186/ISRCTN13563091) was conducted at Riga Stradins University, enrolling 46 patients (13-22 years old) who required molar extraction and possessed a non-erupted third molar. The patients were sequentially assigned to a 3D replica group (24 patients) or a control group (22 patients). The primary outcome measured was the extra-alveolar time of the donor tooth, and the secondary outcome was the total duration of surgery. Both were assessed using a sample size capable of detecting a 10-min difference. A generalized linear model adjusted for various factors was used to test for significant time differences (p < .05) between the groups. RESULTS: Forty-six patients were included in this analysis. The effect of using 3D replicas was not statistically significant and was associated with a decrease in the extraoral time of the donor tooth in seconds (ß = -9.35, 95% CI [-40.86, 22.16]). For the total surgical time in minutes, the use of 3D replicas had a statistically significant impact, reducing the operation duration in minutes (ß = -13.42, 95% CI [-24.50, -2.34]). No early complications were observed in either group, with all teeth present at 3-4 weeks post-surgery. CONCLUSIONS: The integration of 3D printing technology can enhance the efficiency of autotransplantation surgeries, primarily by reducing surgical time.

OBJECTIVE: Authors reported multiple definitions of e-oral health and related terms, and used several definitions interchangeably, like mhealth, teledentistry, teleoral medicine and telehealth. The International Association of Dental Research e-Oral Health Network (e-OHN) aimed to establish a consensus on terminology related to digital technologies used in oral healthcare. METHOD: The Crowdsourcing Delphi method used in this study comprised of four main stages. In the first stage, the task force created a list of terms and definitions around digital health technologies based on the literature and established a panel of experts. Inclusion criteria for the panellists were: to be actively involved in either research and/or working in e-oral health fields; and willing to participate in the consensus process. In the second stage, an email-based consultation was organized with the panel of experts to confirm an initial set of terms. In the third stage, consisted of: a) an online meeting where the list of terms was presented and refined; and b) a presentation at the 2022-IADR annual meeting. The fourth stage consisted of two rounds of feedback to solicit experts' opinion about the terminology and group discussion to reach consensus. A Delphi-questionnaire was sent online to all experts to independently assess a) the appropriateness of the terms, and b) the accompanying definitions, and vote on whether they agreed with them. In a second round, each expert received an individualised questionnaire, which presented the expert's own responses from the first round and the panellists' overall response (% agreement/disagreement) to each term. It was decided that 70% or higher agreement among experts on the terms and definitions would represent consensus. RESULTS: The study led to the identification of an initial set of 43 terms. The list of initial terms was refined to a core set of 37 terms. Initially, 34 experts took part in the consensus process about terms and definitions. From them, 27 experts completed the first rounds of consultations, and 15 the final round of consultations. All terms and definitions were confirmed via online voting (i.e., achieving above the agreed 70% threshold), which indicate their agreed recommendation for use in e-oral health research, dental public health, and clinical practice. CONCLUSION: This is the first study in oral health organised to achieve consensus in e-oral health terminology. This terminology is presented as a resource for interested parties. These terms were also conceptualised to suit with the new healthcare ecosystem and the place of e-oral health within it. The universal use of this terminology to label interventions in future research will increase the homogeneity of future studies including systematic reviews.

INTRODUCTION: Interest is growing in the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots and large language models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, particularly in dental education. To explore dental educators' perceptions of AI chatbots and large language models, specifically their potential benefits and challenges for dental education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A global cross-sectional survey was conducted in May-June 2023 using a 31-item online-questionnaire to assess dental educators' perceptions of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and their influence on dental education. Dental educators, representing diverse backgrounds, were asked about their use of AI, its perceived impact, barriers to using chatbots, and the future role of AI in this field. RESULTS: 428 dental educators (survey views = 1516; response rate = 28%) with a median [25/75th percentiles] age of 45 [37, 56] and 16 [8, 25] years of experience participated, with the majority from the Americas (54%), followed by Europe (26%) and Asia (10%). Thirty-one percent of respondents already use AI tools, with 64% recognising their potential in dental education. Perception of AI's potential impact on dental education varied by region, with Africa (4[4-5]), Asia (4[4-5]), and the Americas (4[3-5]) perceiving more potential than Europe (3[3-4]). Educators stated that AI chatbots could enhance knowledge acquisition (74.3%), research (68.5%), and clinical decision-making (63.6%) but expressed concern about AI's potential to reduce human interaction (53.9%). Dental educators' chief concerns centred around the absence of clear guidelines and training for using AI chatbots. CONCLUSION: A positive yet cautious view towards AI chatbot integration in dental curricula is prevalent, underscoring the need for clear implementation guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Toothpastes available in Europe contain a range of fluoride concentrations, with some meeting the recommended level for caries prevention (>1000 ppm fluoride (ppm)) and others containing low or no fluoride. This study evaluated toothpaste fluoride concentrations in Latvia and Lithuania to inform targeted public health strategies in regions with a high prevalence of dental caries. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2019 to May 2020, using a validated questionnaire in Latvia and Lithuania. Nationally representative samples (1309 families and 5436 members) provided data through a mixed-mode survey (paper and online) on sociodemographic information, toothpaste type, brand, and type. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests (p < 0.05) were used for analysis. RESULTS: Fifteen percent of families used non-fluoridated toothpaste and 12% used <1000 part per million (ppm) fluoride. In Latvia, 56.8% of preschoolers and 28.7% of schoolchildren used <1000 ppm or non-fluoride toothpaste, whereas in Lithuania, 47.2% of preschoolers and 29.1% of schoolchildren used <1000 ppm or non-fluoride toothpaste; 63% of adolescents and 73% of adults used toothpaste with optimal fluoride content (≥1000 ppm). Of the 228 registered toothpaste types, 62% contained more than 1000 ppm, which is optimal for caries prevention; 29% of Latvian and 24% of Lithuanian families used at least one non-fluoridated toothpaste. CONCLUSION: This study revealed significant gaps in the use of fluoride toothpaste among families in Latvia and Lithuania, especially among children. To effectively prevent dental caries, targeted interventions, and education must promote optimal fluoride toothpaste use, particularly among vulnerable populations.

PURPOSE: The phase of a MRI signal is used to encode the velocity of blood flow. Phase unwrapping artifacts may appear when aiming to improve the velocity-to-noise ratio (VNR) of the measured velocity field. This study aims to compare various unwrapping algorithms on ground-truth synthetic data generated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. METHODS: We compare four different phase unwrapping algorithms on two different synthetic datasets of four-dimensional flow MRI and 26 datasets of 2D PC-MRI acquisitions including the ascending and descending aorta. The synthetic datasets are constructed using CFD simulations of an aorta with a coarctation, with different levels of spatiotemporal resolutions and noise. The error of the unwrapped images was assessed by comparison against the ground truth velocity field in the synthetic data and dual-VENC reconstructions in the in vivo data. RESULTS: Using the unwrapping algorithms, we were able to remove aliased voxels in the data almost entirely, reducing the L2-error compared to the ground truth by 50%-80%. Results indicated that the best choice of algorithm depend on the spatiotemporal resolution and noise level of the dataset. Temporal unwrapping is most successful with a high temporal and low spatial resolution ( δ t = 30 $$ \delta t=30 $$ ms, h = 2 . 5 $$ h=2.5 $$ mm), reducing the L2-error by 70%-85%, while Laplacian unwrapping performs better with a lower temporal or better spatial resolution ( δ t = 60 $$ \delta t=60 $$ ms, h = 1 . 5 $$ h=1.5 $$ mm), especially for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) 12 as opposed to SNR 15, with an error reduction of 55%-85% compared to the 50%-75% achieved by the Temporal method. The differences in performance between the methods are statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The temporal method and spatiotemporal Laplacian method provide the best results, with the spatiotemporal Laplacian being more robust. However, single- V enc $$ {V}_{\mathrm{enc}} $$ methods only situationally and not generally reach the performance of dual- V enc $$ {V}_{\mathrm{enc}} $$ unwrapping methods.

PURPOSE: QSM outside the brain has recently gained interest, particularly in the abdominal region. However, the absence of reliable ground truths makes difficult to assess reconstruction algorithms, whose quality is already compromised by additional signal contributions from fat, gases, and different kinds of motion. This work presents a realistic in silico phantom for the development, evaluation and comparison of abdominal QSM reconstruction algorithms. METHODS: Synthetic susceptibility and R 2 * $$ {R}_2^{\ast } $$ maps were generated by segmenting and postprocessing the abdominal 3T MRI data from a healthy volunteer. Susceptibility and R 2 * $$ {R}_2^{\ast } $$ values in different tissues/organs were assigned according to literature and experimental values and were also provided with realistic textures. The signal was simulated using as input the synthetic QSM and R 2 * $$ {R}_2^{\ast } $$ maps and fat contributions. Three susceptibility scenarios and two acquisition protocols were simulated to compare different reconstruction algorithms. RESULTS: QSM reconstructions show that the phantom allows to identify the main strengths and limitations of the acquisition approaches and reconstruction algorithms, such as in-phase acquisitions, water-fat separation methods, and QSM dipole inversion algorithms. CONCLUSION: The phantom showed its potential as a ground truth to evaluate and compare reconstruction pipelines and algorithms. The publicly available source code, designed in a modular framework, allows users to easily modify the susceptibility, R 2 * $$ {R}_2^{\ast } $$ and TEs, and thus creates different abdominal scenarios.

BACKGROUND: In phase-contrast (PC) MRI, several dual velocity encoding methods have been proposed to robustly increase velocity-to-noise ratio (VNR), including a standard dual-VENC (SDV), an optimal dual-VENC (ODV), and bi- and triconditional methods. PURPOSE: To develop a correction method for the ODV approach and to perform a comparison between methods. STUDY TYPE: Case-control study. POPULATION: Twenty-six volunteers. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5 T phase-contrast MRI with VENCs of 50, 75, and 150 cm/second. ASSESSMENT: Since we acquired single-VENC protocols, we used the background phase from high-VENC (VENCH ) to reconstruct the low-VENC (VENCL ) phase. We implemented and compared the unwrapping methods for different noise levels and also developed a correction of the ODV method. STATISTICAL TESTS: Shapiro-Wilk's normality test, two-way analysis of variance with homogeneity of variances was performed using Levene's test, and the significance level was adjusted by Tukey's multiple post hoc analysis with Bonferroni (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed no extreme outliers, normally distributed residuals, and homogeneous variances. We found statistically significant interaction between noise levels and the unwrapping methods. This implies that the number of non-unwrapped pixels increased with the noise level. We found that for ß = VENCL /VENCH  = 1/2, unwrapping methods were more robust to noise. The post hoc test showed a significant difference between the ODV corrected and the other methods, offering the best results regarding the number of unwrapped pixels. DATA CONCLUSIONS: All methods performed similarly without noise, but the ODV corrected method was more robust to noise at the price of a higher computational time. OBJECTIVE: To accurately estimate liver PDFF from chemical shift-encoded (CSE) MRI using a deep learning (DL)-based Multi-Decoder Water-Fat separation Network (MDWF-Net), that operates over complex-valued CSE-MR images with only 3 echoes. METHODS: The proposed MDWF-Net and a U-Net model were independently trained using the first 3 echoes of MRI data from 134 subjects, acquired with conventional 6-echoes abdomen protocol at 1.5 T. Resulting models were then evaluated using unseen CSE-MR images obtained from 14 subjects that were acquired with a 3-echoes CSE-MR pulse sequence with a shorter duration compared to the standard protocol. Resulting PDFF maps were qualitatively assessed by two radiologists, and quantitatively assessed at two corresponding liver ROIs, using Bland Altman and regression analysis for mean values, and ANOVA testing for standard deviation (STD) (significance level: .05). A 6-echo graph cut was considered ground truth. RESULTS: Assessment of radiologists demonstrated that, unlike U-Net, MDWF-Net had a similar quality to the ground truth, despite it considered half of the information. Regarding PDFF mean values at ROIs, MDWF-Net showed a better agreement with ground truth (regression slope = 0.94, R2 = 0.97) than U-Net (regression slope = 0.86, R2 = 0.93). Moreover, ANOVA post hoc analysis of STDs showed a statistical difference between graph cuts and U-Net (p < .05), unlike MDWF-Net (p = .53). CONCLUSION: MDWF-Net showed a liver PDFF accuracy comparable to the reference graph cut method, using only 3 echoes and thus allowing a reduction in the acquisition times. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: We have prospectively validated that the use of a multi-decoder convolutional neural network to estimate liver proton density fat fraction allows a significant reduction in MR scan time by reducing the number of echoes required by 50%. KEY POINTS: • Novel water-fat separation neural network allows for liver PDFF estimation by using multi-echo MR images with a reduced number of echoes. • Prospective single-center validation demonstrated that echo reduction leads to a significant shortening of the scan time, compared to standard 6-echo acquisition. • Qualitative and quantitative performance of the proposed method showed no significant differences in PDFF estimation with respect to the reference technique.

We assessed adherence to five transparency practices-data sharing, code sharing, conflict of interest disclosure, funding disclosure, and protocol registration-in articles in dental journals. We searched and exported the full text of all research articles from PubMed-indexed dental journals available in the Europe PubMed Central database until the end of 2021. We programmatically assessed their adherence to the five transparency practices using a validated and automated tool. Journal- and article-related information was retrieved from ScimagoJR and Journal Citation Reports. Of all 329,784 articles published in PubMed-indexed dental journals, 10,659 (3.2%) were available to download. Of those, 77% included a conflict of interest disclosure, and 62% included a funding disclosure. Seven percent of the articles had a registered protocol. Data sharing (2.0%) and code sharing (0.1%) were rarer. Sixteen percent of articles did not adhere to any of the five transparency practices, 29% adhered to one, 48% adhered to two, 7.0% adhered to three, 0.3% adhered to four, and no article adhered to all five practices. Adherence to transparency practices increased over time; however, data and code sharing especially remained rare. Coordinated efforts involving all stakeholders are needed to change current transparency practices in dental research.

PURPOSE: Three-dimensional (3D) quantification of circulation using a Finite Elements methodology. METHODS: We validate our 3D method using an in-silico arch model, for different mesh resolutions, image resolution and noise levels, and we compared this with a currently used 2D method. Finally, we evaluated the application of our methodology in 4D Flow MRI data of ascending aorta of six healthy volunteers, and six bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) patients, three with right and three with left handed flow, at peak systole. The in-vivo data was compared using a Mann-Whitney U-test between volunteers and patients (right and left handed flow). RESULTS: The robustness of our method throughout different image resolutions and noise levels showed subestimation of circulation less than 45 cm2 /s in comparison with the 55cm2 /s generated by the current 2D method. The circulation (mean ± SD) of the healthy volunteer group was 13.83 ± 28.78 cm2 /s, in BAV patients with right-handed flow 724.37 ± 317.53 cm2 /s, and BAV patients with left-handed flow -480.99 ± 387.29 cm2 /s. There were significant differences between healthy volunteers and BAV patients groups (P-value < .01), and also between BAV patients with a right-handed or left-handed helical flow and healthy volunteers (P-value < .01). CONCLUSION: We propose a novel 3D formulation to estimate the circulation in the thoracic aorta, which can be used to assess the differences between normal and diseased hemodynamic from 4D-Flow MRI data. This method also can correctly differentiate between the visually seen right- and left-handed helical flow, which suggests that this approach may have high clinical sensitivity, but requires confirmation in longitudinal studies with a large cohort.

BACKGROUND: Transverse myelitis (TM) is characterized by acute development of motor, sensory and autonomic dysfunctions due to horizontally diffused inflammation in one or more segments of the spinal cord in the absence of a compressive lesion. The not well-known inflammation process induces demyelination resulting in neurological dysfunction. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report we used a functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique to evaluate changes in the peri-spinal vascular response induced by a peripheral median nerve electrical stimulation in a patient with chronic transverse myelitis (TM). fNIRS showed drastically reduced signal amplitude in the peri-spinal vascular response, compared to that obtained from a healthy control group throughout most of the C7-T1 and T10-L2 spinal cord segments. CONCLUSION: The potential use of this relatively non-invasive fNIRS technology support the potential clinical application of this method for functional test of the spinal cord through the assessment of the spinal neurovascular response.

Disc displacement is a common disorder of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that often results in progressive joint dysfunction, including clicking, arthralgia, functional limitations, osteoarthritis, and even condylar resorption. Several arthroscopic techniques have been proposed to treat anterior disc displacement. Yang's arthroscopic disc repositioning and suturing technique, described in 2012, consist in a pair of sutures inserted through the junction of the disc and the retrodiscal tissue and tied underneath the cartilage of the external auditory canal. This technique is reported to be the most stable over time, but it has 2 main disadvantages, 1) it is one of the most challenging to perform, requiring a skill TMJ arthroscopic surgeon and 2) it needs a customized suture equipment. We designed a modification to Yang's technique using a common, cheap, available and disposable suture set.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID19 pandemic, the Latvian government issued first absolute restrictions (elective treatments prohibited, only emergency care) and later relative restrictions (preference for non-aerosol-generating procedures (AGP) and emergency care) on dental care. This study aims to assess the impact of these restrictions on the decision made by Latvian dentists about caries treatment. METHODS: A Survey-based cross-sectional study was used. A minimum sample size of 174 dentists was estimated for national representativeness (N = 1524). The questionnaire was developed by experts and sent three times via email to Latvian dentists from July to September 2020 and was also delivered in printed form at two national conferences in September and October 2020. Descriptive statistics were calculated. RESULTS: We received 373 completed questionnaires, with a total response rate of 24.5%. Under the recommendation to reduce AGP for the treatment of uncomplicated caries, 10% of the dentists stated that they would stop attending, 54% would only attend emergencies, and 36% would attend as usual. Under prohibition, the percentages are 15%, 74%, and 11%, respectively. Regarding the type of treatment, more than 75% would opt to proceed with selective caries removal for both primary and permanent teeth and 10% for extraction. CONCLUSION: Latvian dentists are willing to treat patients with caries during the pandemic and state that they prefer to use non- or minimally invasive and less aerosol-generating methods for caries treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Dental undergraduates will access the Internet searching for learning materials to complement their training; however, open access content is not generally recommended by dental schools. This study aimed to evaluate how dental students are using online video content. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Students from eight Universities (Athens, Birmingham, Brescia, Cardiff, Melbourne, Paris, Sao Paulo and Valdivia) representing three continents were invited to complete a survey on their access and learning from online videos. RESULTS: International students behave similarly when studying dental content online. Of 515 respondents, 94.6% use the Internet as a learning tool. It was observed that videos are not frequently recommended during didactic lectures (9.6%). But many students (79.9%) will use YouTube for their learning which includes clinical procedures. Students will check online content before performing procedures for the first time (74.8%), to understand what was explained in class (65.9%) or read in books (59.5%), to relearn clinical techniques (64.7%) and to visualise rare procedures (49.8%). More than half of the students do not fully trust the accuracy or the reliability of online content. This does not prevent students from watching and sharing dental videos with classmates (64.4%). The content watched is not shared with teachers (23.3%) even when it contradicts what was learnt in the school (38.2%). CONCLUSION: This study concludes that students regularly integrate open access digital resources into learning portfolios but are hesitant to inform their teachers about their viewing habits. Students wish to receive critical skills on how to evaluate the material they encounter outside their traditional learning space.

PURPOSE: To develop an Off-Resonance Insensitive Orthogonal CSPAMM sequence (ORI-O-CSPAMM) for the acquisition of CSPAMM and MICSR grids in half of the acquisition time. METHODS: Phantom and mid-level left ventricle short-axis tagged images were acquired using CSPAMM, ORI-CSPAMM, O-CSPAMM, and the proposed ORI-O-CPAMM sequences to interrogate and compare its behavior under off-resonance effects produced by vegetable oil and subcutaneous and epicardial fat. The images were compared in terms of signal and the capacity to obtain complex difference and MICSR images. RESULTS: Like ORI-CSPAMM, the proposed ORI-O-CSPAMM sequence removed almost completely the off-resonance artifacts produced during the tagging preparation. Tagging grids without DC components were obtained with ORI-O-CSPAMM using complex difference and MICSR from only two complementary images, which reduced the scan time to a half compared to CSPAMM and ORI-CSPAMM. The removal of off-resonance effects and the capacity to obtain MICSR images are advantages of ORI-O-CSPAMM over the O-CSPAMM sequence. CONCLUSION: We developed a novel and fast tagging sequence designed to remove off-resonance effects during the tagging preparation, and to obtain complex difference and MICSR grids in half of the scan time compared to CSPAMM and ORI-CSPAMM sequences, which could allow its application to clinical protocols.

PURPOSE: Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) is usually performed by minimizing a functional with data fidelity and regularization terms. A weighting parameter controls the balance between these terms. There is a need for techniques to find the proper balance that avoids artifact propagation and loss of details. Finding the point of maximum curvature in the L-curve is a popular choice, although it is slow, often unreliable when using variational penalties, and has a tendency to yield overregularized results. METHODS: We propose 2 alternative approaches to control the balance between the data fidelity and regularization terms: 1) searching for an inflection point in the log-log domain of the L-curve, and 2) comparing frequency components of QSM reconstructions. We compare these methods against the conventional L-curve and U-curve approaches. RESULTS: Our methods achieve predicted parameters that are better correlated with RMS error, high-frequency error norm, and structural similarity metric-based parameter optimizations than those obtained with traditional methods. The inflection point yields less overregularization and lower errors than traditional alternatives. The frequency analysis yields more visually appealing results, although with larger RMS error. CONCLUSION: Our methods provide a robust parameter optimization framework for variational penalties in QSM reconstruction. The L-curve-based zero-curvature search produced almost optimal results for typical QSM acquisition settings. The frequency analysis method may use a 1.5 to 2.0 correction factor to apply it as a stand-alone method for a wider range of signal-to-noise-ratio settings. This approach may also benefit from fast search algorithms such as the binary search to speed up the process.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between regional wall shear stress (WSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) and aortic dilation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Approach and Results: Forty-six consecutive patients with BAV (63% with right-left-coronary-cusp fusion, aortic diameter ≤ 45 mm and no severe valvular disease) and 44 healthy volunteers were studied by time-resolved 3-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging. WSS and OSI were quantified at different levels of the ascending aorta and the aortic arch, and regional WSS and OSI maps were obtained. Seventy percent of BAV had ascending aorta dilation. Compared with healthy volunteers, patients with BAV had increased WSS and decreased OSI in most of the ascending aorta and the aortic arch. In both BAV and healthy volunteers, regions of high WSS matched regions of low OSI and vice versa. No regions of both low WSS and high OSI were identified in BAV compared with healthy volunteers. Patients with BAV with dilated compared with nondilated aorta presented low and oscillatory WSS in the aortic arch, but not in the ascending aorta where dilation is more prevalent. Furthermore, no regions of concomitant low WSS and high OSI were identified when BAV were compared according to leaflet fusion pattern, despite the well-known differences in regional dilation prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: Regions with low WSS and high OSI do not match those with the highest prevalence of dilation in patients with BAV, thus providing no evidence to support the low and oscillatory shear stress theory in the pathogenesis of proximal aorta dilation in the presence of BAV.

BACKGROUND: Chronic type B aortic dissection (TBAD) is associated with poor long-term outcome, and accurate risk stratification tools remain lacking. Pressurization of the false lumen (FL) has been recognized as central in promoting aortic growth. Several surrogate imaging-based metrics have been proposed to assess FL hemodynamics; however, their relationship to enlarging aortic dimensions remains unclear. We investigated the association between aortic growth and three cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR)-derived metrics of FL pressurization: false lumen ejection fraction (FLEF), maximum systolic deceleration rate (MSDR), and FL relative pressure (FL ΔPmax). METHODS: CMR/CMR angiography was performed in 12 patients with chronic dissection of the descending thoracoabdominal aorta, including contrast-enhanced CMR angiography and time-resolved three-dimensional phase-contrast CMR (4D Flow CMR). Aortic growth rate was calculated as the change in maximal aortic diameter between baseline and follow-up imaging studies over the time interval, with patients categorized as having either 'stable' (< 3 mm/year) or 'enlarging' (≥ 3 mm/year) growth. Three metrics relating to FL pressurization were defined as: (1) FLEF: the ratio between retrograde and antegrade flow at the TBAD entry tear, (2) MSDR: the absolute difference between maximum and minimum systolic acceleration in the proximal FL, and (3) FL ΔPmax: the difference in absolute pressure between aortic root and distal FL. RESULTS: FLEF was higher in enlarging TBAD (49.0 ± 17.9% vs. 10.0 ± 11.9%, p = 0.002), whereas FL ΔPmax was lower (32.2 ± 10.8 vs. 57.2 ± 12.5 mmHg/m, p = 0.017). MSDR and conventional anatomic variables did not differ significantly between groups. FLEF showed positive (r = 0.78, p = 0.003) correlation with aortic growth rate whereas FL ΔPmax showed negative correlation (r = - 0.64, p = 0.026). FLEF and FL ΔPmax remained as independent predictors of aortic growth rate after adjusting for baseline aortic diameter. CONCLUSION: Comparative analysis of three 4D flow CMR metrics of TBAD FL pressurization demonstrated that those that focusing on retrograde flow (FLEF) and relative pressure (FL ΔPmax) independently correlated with growth and differentiated patients with enlarging and stable descending aortic dissections. These results emphasize the highly variable nature of aortic hemodynamics in TBAD patients, and suggest that 4D Flow CMR derived metrics of FL pressurization may be useful to separate patients at highest and lowest risk for progressive aortic growth and complications.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses a spectrum of liver abnormalities including steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Liver biopsy remains the gold standard method to determine the disease stage in NAFLD but is an invasive and risky procedure. Studies have previously reported that changes in intrahepatic fatty acids (FA) composition are related to the progression of NAFLD, mainly in its early stages. The aim of this study was to characterize the liver FA composition in mice fed a Choline-deficient L-amino-defined (CDAA) diet at different stages of NAFLD using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). METHODS: We used in-vivo MRS to perform a longitudinal characterization of hepatic FA changes in NAFLD mice for 10 weeks. We validated our findings with ex-vivo MRS, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and histology. RESULTS: In-vivo and ex-vivo results showed that livers from CDAA-fed mice exhibit a significant increase in liver FA content as well as a change in FA composition compared with control mice. After 4 weeks of CDAA diet, a decrease in polyunsaturated and an increase in monounsaturated FA were observed. These changes were associated with the appearance of early stages of steatohepatitis, confirmed by histology (NAFLD Activity Score (NAS) = 4.5). After 10 weeks of CDAA-diet, the liver FA composition remained stable while the NAS increased further to 6 showing a combination of early and late stages of steatohepatitis. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that monitoring lipid composition in addition to total water/fat with MRS may yield additional insights that can be translated for non-invasive stratification of high-risk NAFLD patients.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The diagnosis and treatment of dental trauma are based primarily on observational evidence and case reports. The aim of this research is to assess the quality of reporting of case reports published from 2008 to 2018 in dental selected journals using the Care Report (CARE) guideline and to assess whether there was a change after publication of the CARE guidelines. METHODS: A descriptive study of the publications available on PubMed from specialist journals was conducted. Searches were made for MESh and free keywords associated with dental trauma and tooth injuries. One calibrated evaluator (kappa-intra = 0.87) using the CARE guidelines (max = 30 points) evaluated all case reports published from 2008 to 2018 in relevant journals. The average score before and after 2013 was compared by t-test and regression modeling, and the description of each CARE item was analyzed. RESULTS: The search found 201 relevant articles published in Dent Traumatol 141 (70.1%), Eur Arch Paediatr Dent 10 (5.0%), Int J Clin Pediatr Dent 16 (8.0%), J Clin Pediatr Dent 19 (9.5%), and Pediatr Dent 15 (7.5%). The mean quality (± standard deviation) was 14.3 (±2.6), and range from 7 to 20. The number and mean (±SD) before the CARE guidelines were n = 171, mean = 14.3 (±2.6) and after the CARE guidelines were n = 30, mean = 14.7 (±2.7), (P = .39, t-test). No significant differences per journal or origin of the first author were found. CONCLUSIONS: The reporting quality of case reports about dental trauma in five international dental journals has not improved since the publication of the CARE guidelines. The lack of reporting of essential items in case reports suggests that journals could enhance their quality by requiring authors to adhere to the CARE guidelines or similar reporting guidelines.
