RESUMEN

Detecting scandium (Sc) with high selectivity and sensitivity is a challenging task due to its chemical similarity to other rare earth ions. Our findings show that the fluorescence of the complex fluorescent indicator calcein (CL) is quenched under acidic conditions (pH = 2), and Sc3+ strongly inhibits this process. The results demonstrate that CL forms multimers and precipitates out of the solution under acidic conditions, while Sc3+ causes a significant decrease in the scattering intensity of the solution. Additional experiments revealed that the strong Lewis acid nature of Sc3+ complexes with the carboxyl groups of CL leads to increased dispersion of CL even under acidic conditions, thus enhancing its absorption and fluorescence. The complexation ratio of Sc3+ and CL was investigated through spectral titrations and theoretical calculations. The interaction between Sc3+ and CL is the strongest among rare earth and common metal ions due to the smallest ionic radius, resulting in high selectivity. The fluorescence turn-on strategy had a linear range of 0.04 to 2.25 µM under optimal conditions, with a detection limit of 20 nM for Sc3+. The combination of 3D printing and a smartphone program allows for portable on-site analysis of Sc3+. Mineral and water samples were used to demonstrate the potential of this strategy for the rapid, selective, and sensitive analysis of low levels of Sc3+.

Salivary pepsin has been proposed as a promising diagnostic marker for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, the activity of human pepsin is strongly influenced by pH, and the acidic condition (pH ∼ 2) is optimal, which is a contradiction for the pepsin detection kit based on its catalytic activity. Thus, its accurate quantification in saliva (neutral pH) by readily rapid tools with simplicity and low cost is still challenging. Herein, a convenient fluorescence assay has been developed for the rapid detection of pepsin at neutral pH based on its electrostatic interaction with SYBR Green (SG) rather than the bioactivity. At neutral pH, the positively charged SG fluorophore can be effectively adsorbed by the negatively charged pepsin due to the low isoelectric point (pI) and large molecular size of pepsin. Thus, the molecular rotation of SG is limited, and its fluorescence intensity is significantly increased. The strategy was further confirmed to have the same fluorescence response as that of normally active and inactivated pepsin. Due to the unique pI of pepsin, the fluorescence strategy is highly selective for pepsin compared to other proteins. On the basis of this strategy, a smartphone-based fluorescence capture device integrated with a programmed Python program was fabricated for both color recognition and the accurate detection of pepsin within 3 min. Under the optimal conditions, this turn-on sensor allowed for the on-site analysis of pepsin with a detection limit of 0.2 µg/mL. Moreover, this strategy was successfully used to assess salivary pepsin to aid in the noninvasive diagnosis of GERD.

BACKGROUND Cerebral artery stenosis is closely related to cognitive function, and angioplasty can improve the cognitive function of elderly patients with vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. The specific mechanism, however, is not clear. This study explored the effect of angioplasty on cellular metabolism in the hippocampus of elderly patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighteen elderly patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis who underwent endovascular stent-assisted angioplasty (ESAA) in our department were studied. The changes in cellular metabolism (NAA / Cr, CHO / Cr, NAA / CHO) in bilateral hippocampal areas were detected by MRS before and at 6 months and 12 months after the ESAA. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA), Hamilton Depression Self-assessment Scale (HAMD), and Hamilton Anxiety Self-assessment Scale (HAMA) were also used to evaluate the cognition, depression, and anxiety of patients at different time points of the study, and analyzed the correlation between the changes of cellular metabolism in the hippocampus and the scores of MoCA, HAMD, and HAMA. RESULTS The levels of NAA/Cr in left/right hippocampal areas were significantly higher at 6 and 12 months after the ESAA than before (1.01±0.17/1.22±0.26 vs. 1.10±0.20/1.05±0.26 vs. 0.82±0.10/0.84±0.11, respectively) (P<0.01). MoCA scores were positively correlated with the levels of NAA/Cr in the left/right hippocampal areas (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively). CONCLUSIONS ESAA can improve cognitive function of patients by changing the cellular metabolism of the hippocampus in elderly patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis.

In this study, Auricularia Matrix Waste (AMW) was modified by sodium hydroxide and immobilized into granular adsorbent with sodium alginate to remove lead ions from aqueous solution through a fixed-bed column. The results of Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) illuminated that immobilization greatly changed the structure, elements, polarity and functional groups of the adsorbent. Amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl groups on the adsorbent actively participated lead(II) adsorption and cation exchange also played an important role in adsorption process. The effects of bed length, flow rate and lead ions concentration determined the breakthrough characteristics and remarkably impacted lead(II) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of lead(II) was 151.7 mg/g, when the influent bed, bed height and initial concentration were 15 mL/min, 25 mL/min and 150 mg/L, respectively. Thomas model was more suitable than the Bohart-Adams model to describe the performance of lead(II) adsorption onto IMAMW.

This study aims to discover the impact of composting and pyrolysis on the adsorption performance of Auricularia auricula dreg (AAD) for Cd(II) in aqueous solution. Auricularia auricula dreg (AAD), Auricularia auricula dreg biochar (AADB) and Auricularia auricula dreg compost (AADC) were used to remove Cd(II) from aqueous solution, and their adsorption conditions and mechanisms were compared. The adsorption quantity of three adsorbents reached the maximum (AAD: 80.0 mg/g, AADB: 91.7 mg/g, AADC: 93.5 mg/g) under same conditions (adsorbent dosage of 1 g/L, pH 5.0, biosorption temperature of 25 °C, and biosorption time of 120 min). All Cd(II) biosorption processes onto three adsorbents complied with the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, and spontaneously occurred in an order of AADC > AADB > AAD. The difference in biosorption quantity relied on variation in surface structure, crystal species and element content caused by composting or pyrolysis. Composting enhanced the changes in surface structure, crystal species, functional groups and ion exchange capacity of the AAD, resulting in AAD had greatly improved the biosorption quantity of Cd(II). Pyrolysis increased the adsorption of Cd(II) mainly by increasing the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, the particle size and pH, in the same time, providing more oxygen-containing functional groups.

In this paper, the effect of coexisting cations and anions on Cr(VI)(in the form of Cr2O72-) adsorption onto Auricularia auricula spent substrate (AASS) modified by cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was investigated in batch adsorption experiment. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 9.327 mg/g, obtained at pH 3.0, 303 K, adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L, initial Cr(VI) concentration of 20 mg/L, rotational speed of 150 r/min for 120 min, was decreased in the presence of coexisting cations and anions, among which Pb2+ and PO43- affected most by 21.79% and 12.43%, respectively. XRD, XPS and FTIR detection found that coexisting Pb2+ and PO43- would not only interfere Cr(VI) to form crystals and reduce to Cr(III), but also compete with Cr(VI) for oxygen-containing and amino groups to form Pb-O and P-NH2, respectively. In addition, the single Cr(VI) adsorption fitted with Langmuir isotherm model, while the competitive adsorption was well described by Freundlich isotherm model. Both single adsorption and competitive adsorption were in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

RESUMEN

This work developed an aptamer-dye complex as a label-free ratiometric fluorescence sensor for rapid analysis of THC and its metabolite in sewage samples. Integrated with a portable fluorescence capture device, this sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity with visualization of as low as 0.6 µM THC via naked-eye observation, and THC analysis can be accomplished within 4 min, which would be a complementary tool for quantifying THC in sewage samples to estimate cannabis consumption.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In cirrhotic patients, the clinical relevance of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is unclear. We aimed to research the relationship between MAFLD and adverse clinical outcomes in patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis. METHODS: A total of 439 patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis were enrolled. Abdominal MRI and computed tomography were used to calculate liver fat content in order to evaluate steatosis. The Kaplan-Meier method was implemented to generate survival curves. The independent risk factors for prognosis were identified by multiple Cox regression. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce the influence of confounding factors. This study explored the relevance between MAFLD and mortality, first decompensation and further decompensation. RESULTS: In our study, most patients were decompensated cirrhosis (n = 332, 75.6%) and the ratio of decompensated cirrhosis patients in non-MAFLD to MAFLD group was 199 : 133. Compared to the non-MAFLD group, patients with MAFLD had worse liver function which mainly reflected that there were more Child-Pugh C patients and higher model for end-stage liver disease score in the MAFLD group. A total of 207 adverse clinical events occurred in the total cohort during a median follow-up of 47 months, including 45 deaths, 28 hepatocellular carcinoma, 23 first decompensation and 111 further decompensation. Cox multivariate analysis showed that MAFLD was an independent risk factor for death [hazard ratio (HR) 1.931; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.019-3.660; P = 0.044 HR 2.645; 95% CI, 1.145-6.115; P = 0.023] and further decompensation (HR 1.859; 95% CI, 1.261-2.741; P = 0.002 HR 1.953; 95% CI, 1.195-3.192; P = 0.008) before and after PSM. In decompensated group with MAFLD, diabetes had a more significant effect on adverse prognosis than overweight or obesity and other metabolic risk factors. CONCLUSION: In patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis, concomitant MAFLD can predict a higher risk of further decompensation and death among decompensated individuals. According to patients among MAFLD, diabetes may be a major factor in the occurrence of adverse clinical events.

OBJECTIVES: The efficacy of microwave ablation (MWA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as bridge therapy has been gradually confirmed. We aimed to compare the recurrence beyond the Milan criteria (RBM) rates in potentially transplantable patients with HCC receiving MWA or radiofrequency ablation (RFA) as bridge therapy. METHODS: In total, 307 potentially transplantable patients with single HCC ≤ 3 cm who initially received MWA (n = 82) or RFA (n = 225) were included. RBM, recurrence-free survival (RFS), and overall survival (OS) were compared between MWA and RFA groups by using propensity score matching (PSM). Competing risks Cox regression was used to identify predictors of RBM. RESULTS: After PSM, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year cumulative RBM rates were 6.8%, 18.3%, and 39.3% in the MWA group (n = 75), and 7.4%,18.5%, and 27.7% in the RFA group (n = 137), respectively, with no significant difference (p = 0.386). MWA and RFA were not the independent risk factors of RBM, and patients with higher alpha-fetoprotein, non-antiviral treatment, and higher MELD score were at greater risk of RBM. Neither corresponding RFS rates (66.7%, 39.2% and 21.4% vs. 70.8%, 47% and 34.7%, p = 0.310) nor OS rates (97.3%, 88.0%, and 75.4% vs. 97.8%, 85.1%, and 70.7%, p = 0.384) for 1-, 3- and 5-years were significantly different between the MWA and RFA groups. The MWA group showed more frequent major complications (21.4% vs. 7.1%, p = 0.004) and longer hospital stays (4 days vs. 2 days, p < 0.001) compared with the RFA group. CONCLUSION: MWA showed comparable RBM, RFS, and OS rates to RFA in potentially transplantable patients with single HCC ≤ 3 cm. Compared to RFA, MWA might provide the same effect as bridge therapy.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection (SR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are reasonable treatment options for early recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (rHCC), but it is still uncertain which treatment is better. The purpose of this study was to compare the therapeutic effects of SR and RFA on patients with early rHCC. METHODS: This study enrolled 168 patients with early rHCC who underwent SR or RFA. The progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and complications between the treatment groups for the total and propensity score-matched (PSM) cohorts were compared. RESULTS: Before PSM, the 1-, 3-, 5-year OS (94.8%, 63.0%, 36.1% vs. 93.8%, 58.5%, 35.4%, P = 0.580) and PFS (50.7%, 22.7%, 12.0% vs. 68.8%, 30.3%, 15.9%, P = 0.224) were similar in RFA group and the SR group. After PSM, the 1-, 3-, 5-year OS (95.5%, 71.1%, 53.3% vs. 95.5%, 58.0%, 42.1%, P = 0.285) and PFS (50%, 36.4%, 27.3% vs. 68.2%, 25.6%, 12.8%, P = 0.999) were similar in the RFA group and the SR group. For patients with early recurrent tumors ≤3 cm, RFA and SR could achieve similar curative effects. However, SR was superior to RFA in terms PFS for patients with early recurrent tumors >3 cm, but the OS was similar. For all patients, RFA had significantly fewer complications and shorter hospitalization time compared with SR. CONCLUSION: SR achieves better tumor control compared with RFA for patients with early rHCC (>3 cm) after SR. RFA had significantly fewer complications and shorter hospitalization time compared with SR for all patients.

Applying gel-type solid chlorine dioxide for the sustained release of chlorine dioxide has several shortcomings, such as no resistance to acid and alkali corrosion and poor mechanical properties. However, introducing quaternary ammonium, carboxyl, and amino groups into the hydrogel system can enhance its acid and alkali resistance. In this study, the effects of concentration of dry heat-modified starch, quaternized carboxymethyl cellulose, and chitin on the swelling behavior and mechanical properties of starch-based acid- and alkali-resistant hydrogels are investigated. The feasibility of the actual and predicted values of the tentative results is verified based on the response surface design to determine the optimal concentration ratio of acid- and alkali-resistant hydrogels. The results reveal that optimized process parameters are reliable. The maximum swelling ratio and compressive stress of the hydrogel are 5358.00% and 44.45 kPa, respectively, and its swelling behavior conforms to the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Thus, the present study can provide a new method of developing efficient starch-based chlorine dioxide hydrogels for the sustained release of chlorine dioxide.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a radiomics score (Rad-score) extracted from liver and spleen CT images in cirrhotic patients to predict the probability of esophageal variceal rebleeding. Methods: In total, 173 cirrhotic patients were enrolled in this retrospective study. A total of 2,264 radiomics features of the liver and spleen were extracted from CT images. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression was used to select features and generate the Rad-score. Then, the Rad-score was evaluated by the concordance index (C-index), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess the risk stratification ability of the Rad-score. Results: Rad-scoreLiver, Rad-scoreSpleen, and Rad-scoreLiver-Spleen were independent risk factors for EV rebleeding. The Rad-scoreLiver-Spleen, which consisted of ten features, showed good discriminative performance, with C-indexes of 0.853 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.776-0.904] and 0.822 (95% CI, 0.749-0.875) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curve showed that the predicted probability of rebleeding was very close to the actual probability. DCA verified the usefulness of the Rad-scoreLiver-Spleen in clinical practice. The Rad-scoreLiver-Spleen showed good performance in stratifying patients into high-, intermediate- and low-risk groups in both the training and validation cohorts. The C-index of the Rad-scoreLiver-Spleen in the hepatitis B virus (HBV) cohort was higher than that in the non-HBV cohort. Conclusion: The radiomics score extracted from liver and spleen CT images can predict the risk of esophageal variceal rebleeding and stratify cirrhotic patients accordingly.

We aimed to investigate the CXCL13 concentration of the serum and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative latent syphilis patients with treatment failure and explore the change in CXCL13 after treatment. Sixty-eight latent syphilis patients with treatment failure (failure group), 68 syphilis patients with successful treatment (seroconversion group) and 18 patients with non-inflammatory diseases of the nervous system (control group) were included and serum and CSF were collected. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to detect the CXCL13 in the serum and CSF. Results showed that the serum CXCL13 concentration was comparable among three groups, and the CSF leukocyte count, IgG index and CXCL13 concentration in the failure group were significantly higher than those in the seroconversion group and control group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). CSF CXCL13 concentration in the failure group was positively related to the CSF leukocyte count (r = 0.3594, P < 0.001). Of the 68 patients in the treatment failure group, neurosyphilis was found in 17 (25.0%). In conclusion, involvement of nervous system is one of the reasons for the treatment failure in patients with latent syphilis. Detection of CSF CXCL13 concentration is helpful for the diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation of HIV-negative latent syphilis patients with treatment failure and neurosyphilis.

This study aims to evaluate the potential of fresh spent mushroom substrate (SMS) in Cd immobilization and soil improvement, compared with spent mushroom substrate biochar (SMSB) and spent mushroom substrate compost (SMSC). A simulating remediation experiment was conducted with soil at Cd concentration of 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 mg kg-1 and amendment addition ratio of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4% for 90 days. At the end of incubation, it was found that 4%SMS addition showed the best effect both on Cd immobilization and soil improvement. It decreased Cd exchangeable fraction ratio by 52.77% (16.30% higher than 4%SMSC) and increased residual fraction ratio by 65.28% (36.34% and 49.64% higher than 4%SMSB and 4%SMSC, respectively); increased soil pH, EC, and CEC by 10.43% (3.83% higher than 4%SMSC), 11.54%, and 29.72%; and increased urease activity, sucrase activity, and catalase activity by 125.61% (43.90% and 8.54% higher than 4%SMSB and 4%SMSC, respectively), 79.46% (35.35% and 14.02% higher than 4%SMSB and 4%SMSC, respectively), and 75.68% (29.73% higher than 4%SMSB), compared with control treatment (CK) respectively. The results demonstrate that 4%SMS can be used as amendments for cadmium-contaminated soils.

YM-1, a heavy metal resistant and plant growth-promoting bacterium, was immobilized with spent substrate of mushroom and applied to alleviate the toxicity of Pb to pakchoi. The results indicated that the biomass of pakchoi in inoculation group was increased by 17.45 to 27.05% compared with that in non-inoculated group (p < 0.05). The root and shoot were lengthened by 13.45% to 39.17% and 20.23% to 42.36%, respectively. The content of Pb in root and shoot obviously reduced and that in edible part (shoot) was less than 0.2 mg kg-1 in the low concentration of Pb. Other indicators such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), chlorophyll, and protein all testified that YM-1 inoculation was conducive to the alleviation of Pb toxicity to pakchoi.

Objective Endovascular stent-assistant angioplasty (ESAA) is a valid treatment for symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis (SVAS), but the long-term effect and the improvement of condition compared with medication treatment are unknown. This study investigated the long-term efficacy of ESAA in patients with moderate and severe SVAS, and compared the efficacy with medication treatment. Materials and methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data of 43 patients with moderate and severe SVAS hospitalized in our department. According to different treatment methods they were divided into 29 cases in an ESAA group and 14 cases in a medication treatment group. During the follow-up period, the degree of vascular stenosis, vascular blood flow velocity, restenosis rate, recovery of neurological function and the incidence of cerebral ischemic events in the two groups were analyzed. Results The average clinical follow-up period was 89.4 ± 10.2 months. Before treatment, the stenosis rate and average blood flow velocity of the two groups were not statistically significant ( p > 0.05). During the follow-up period, both were significantly lower than the medication treatment group ( p < 0.01). In the ESAA group, three cases of stent stenosis, and three cases in the medication treatment group were completely occluded. The total ischemic events in ESAA group were three cases, compared with nine cases in the medication treatment group; the difference was statistically significant ( p < 0.05). Conclusion ESAA has a long-term effect in the treatment of symptomatic moderate and severe vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. It is superior to medication therapy in preventing posterior circulation ischemia (PCI), but a larger sample size is still needed to confirm the study.

Neurosyphilis is a chronic infectious disease with involvement of central nervous system infection by Treponema pallidum. This study was to investigate the contents of B lymphocyte chemokine 1 (BLC-1/chemokine [C-X-C motif] ligand 13), Th1 cytokines (Interleukin [IL]-2, IL-12, and Interferon [IFN]-γ), and Th2 cytokines (IL-6 and IL-10) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of HIV-negative patients with neurosyphilis before and after treatment, aiming to elucidate roles of CXCL13 and Th1/Th2 cytokines in immune response to and pathogenesis of neurosyphilis.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to detect the contents of CXCL13, IL-2, IL-12, IFN-γ, IL-6, and IL-10 in serum and CSF of 47 HIV-negative patients with neurosyphilis, 36 syphilis patients without neurological involvement and 23 controls (noninfectious intracranial disease) before, 3 and 12 months after treatment with high dose penicillin.Results showed that there was no significant difference in blood CXCL13 content among 3 groups (P > .05); CSF CXCL13 content in neurosyphilis patients was significantly higher than in other 2 groups (P < .001), and positively related to leucocyte count, protein concentration, and IgG index. IL-6 and IL-10 contents of the serum and CSF in neurosyphilis patients were markedly higher than in other 2 groups (P < .05 or .01), but IL-2, IL-12, and IFN-γ of the serum and CSF were significantly lower than in other 2 groups (P < .05 or .01). The IL-6, IL-10, IL-2, IL-12, and IFN-γ contents of the serum and CSF were comparable between control group and syphilis group (P > .05). CSF CXCL13 content was positively related with IL-6 and IL-10 content, while negatively related to IL-12 content in neurosyphilis patients. CSF IL-6 content was negatively related with IL-12 content. In neurosyphilis patients, the CSF CXCL13 content reduced significantly at 3 and 12 months (P < .001), the CSF IL-2 and IL-12 contents increased significantly at 12 months, and CSF IL-6 contents reduced significantly at 12 months after treatment (P < .05 or .01).It is concluded that neurosyphilis patients did not have normal immune function. CXCL13 and Th1/Th2 cytokines are involved in the immune response of neurosyphilis patients. CSF CXCL13 and Th1/Th2 cytokines contents may be used for the diagnosis and evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of neurosyphilis.
