RESUMEN

Near-surface negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers hold excellent promise for nanoscale magnetic imaging and quantum sensing. However, they often experience charge-state instabilities, leading to strongly reduced fluorescence and NV coherence time, which negatively impact magnetic imaging sensitivity. This occurs even more severely at 4 K and ultrahigh vacuum (UHV, p = 2 × 10-10 mbar). We demonstrate that in situ adsorption of H2O on the diamond surface allows the partial recovery of the shallow NV sensors. Combining these with band-bending calculations, we conclude that controlled surface treatments are essential for implementing NV-based quantum sensing protocols under cryogenic UHV conditions.

RESUMEN

Correlated translation-orientation tracking of single particles can provide important information for understanding the dynamics of live systems and their interaction with the probes. However, full six-dimensional (6D) motion tracking has yet to be achieved. Here, we developed synchronized 3D translation and 3D rotation tracking of single diamond particles based on nitrogen-vacancy center sensing. We first performed 6D tracking of diamond particles attached to a giant plasma membrane vesicle to demonstrate the method. Quantitative analysis of diamond particles' motion allowed elimination of the geometric effect and revealed the net rotation on the vesicle. 6D tracking was then applied to measure live cell dynamics. Motion characteristics of nanodiamonds on cell membranes under various controlled physiological conditions suggest that the nanodiamonds' rotation is associated with cell metabolic activities. Our technique extends the toolbox of single particle tracking and provides a unique solution to problems where correlated analysis of translation and rotation is critical.

RESUMEN

Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as one of the most promising areas in condensed matter research, with many exciting emerging properties and significant potential for applications ranging from topological magnonics to low-power spintronics, quantum computing, and optical communications. In the brief time after their discovery, 2D magnets have blossomed into a rich area for investigation, where fundamental concepts in magnetism are challenged by the behavior of spins that can develop at the single layer limit. However, much effort is still needed in multiple fronts before 2D magnets can be routinely used for practical implementations. In this comprehensive review, prominent authors with expertise in complementary fields of 2D magnetism (i.e., synthesis, device engineering, magneto-optics, imaging, transport, mechanics, spin excitations, and theory and simulations) have joined together to provide a genome of current knowledge and a guideline for future developments in 2D magnetic materials research.

RESUMEN

A new fabrication method to produce homogeneously fluorescent nanodiamonds with high yields is described. The powder obtained by high energy ball milling of fluorescent high pressure, high temperature diamond microcrystals was converted in a pure concentrated aqueous colloidal dispersion of highly crystalline ultrasmall nanoparticles with a mean size less than or equal to 10 nm. The whole fabrication yield of colloidal quasi-spherical nanodiamonds was several orders of magnitude higher than those previously reported starting from microdiamonds. The results open up avenues for the industrial cost-effective production of fluorescent nanodiamonds with well-controlled properties.

RESUMEN

A novel approach for preparation of ultra-bright fluorescent nanodiamonds (fNDs) was developed and the thermal and kinetic optimum of NV center formation was identified. Combined with a new oxidation method, this approach enabled preparation of particles that were roughly one order of magnitude brighter than particles prepared with commonly used procedures.

RESUMEN

Diamonds with a diameter of just 5 nm are capable of supporting colour centres and emitting fluorescence, and encapsulating these nanodiamonds in a polymer stops them blinking.
