BACKGROUND: Circulating zinc (Zn) concentrations are lower than normal in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). It is unknown whether Zn deficiency increases the susceptibility to PD. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary Zn deficiency on behaviors and dopaminergic neurons in a mouse model of PD and to explore potential mechanisms. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice aged 8-10 wk were fed Zn adequate (ZnA; 30 µg/g) or Zn deficient (ZnD; <5 µg/g) diet throughout the experiments. Six weeks later 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) was injected to generate the PD model. Controls were injected with saline. Thus, 4 groups (Saline-ZnA, Saline-ZnD, MPTP-ZnA, and MPTP-ZnD) were formed. The experiment lasted 13 wk. Open field test, rotarod test, immunohistochemistry, and RNA sequencing were performed. Data were analyzed with t-test, 2-factor ANOVA, or Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: Both MPTP and ZnD diet treatments led to a significant reduction in blood Zn concentrations (PMPTP = 0.012, PZn = 0.014), reduced total distance traveled (PMPTP < 0.001, PZn = 0.031), and affected the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (PMPTP < 0.001, PZn = 0.020). In the MPTP-treated mice, the ZnD diet significantly reduced total distance traveled by 22.4% (P = 0.026), decreased latency to fall by 49.9% (P = 0.026), and reduced dopaminergic neurons by 59.3% (P = 0.002) compared with the ZnA diet. RNA sequencing analysis revealed a total of 301 differentially expressed genes (156 upregulated; 145 downregulated) in the substantia nigra of ZnD mice compared with ZnA mice. The genes were involved in a number of processes, including protein degradation, mitochondria integrity, and α-synuclein aggregation. CONCLUSIONS: Zn deficiency aggravates movement disorders in PD mice. Our results support previous clinical observations and suggest that appropriate Zn supplementation may be beneficial for PD.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in the topological organization of whole-brain functional networks in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) and characterize the relationship of these alterations with pain characteristics. METHODS: Thirty-three CLBP patients and 34 matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent fMRI scans. A graph-theoretical approach was applied to identify brain network changes in patients suffering from chronic low back pain given its nonspecific etiology and complexity. Graph theory-based analysis was used to construct functional connectivity matrices and extract the features of small-world networks of the brain in both groups. Then, the whole-brain functional connectivity differences were characterized by network-based statistics (NBS) analysis, and the relationship between the altered brain features and clinical measures was explored. RESULTS: At the global level, patients with CLBP showed significantly decreased gamma, sigma, global efficiency, and local efficiency and increased lambda and shortest path length compared with HCs. At the regional level, there were deficits in nodal efficiency within the default mode network and salience network. NBS analysis demonstrated that decreased functional connectivity was present in the CLBP patients, mainly in the frontolimbic circuit and temporal regions. Furthermore, aspects of topological dysfunctions in CLBP were correlated with pain severity. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the aberrant topological organization of functional brain networks in CLBP, which may shed light on the pathophysiology of CLBP and support the development of pain management approaches.

Although there have been recent advances in the molecular pathology of ependymomas, little is known about the underlying molecular evolution during its development. Here, we assessed the clinical, pathological and molecular evolutionary process of ependymoma recurrence in a 9-year-old patient who had seven recurrences of supratentorial ependymoma and died from intracranial multiregional recurrences at the age of 19 years old. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of 7 tumor samples (1 primary and 6 subsequent recurrent tumors) was performed to elucidate the mutation landscape and identify potential driver mutations for tumor evolution. The genetic profiles of the seven tumor specimens showed significant heterogeneity and suggested a highly branched evolutionary pattern. The mutational signatures and chromothripsis changed with treatments. Strikingly, adhesion G protein-coupled receptor L3 (ADGRL3, also known as Latrophilins 3, LPNH3) was found to be consistently mutated during the entire disease process. However, Sanger sequencing of other 78 ependymoma patients who underwent surgery at our institution showed no genetic alteration of ADGRL3, as found in the present case. The mRNA levels of ADGRL3 were significantly lower in ependymomas (n = 36), as compared with normal brain tissue (n = 3). Grade III ependymomas had the lowest ADGRL3 expression. Moreover, ependymomas with lower mRNA level of ADGRL3 had shorter overall survival. Our findings, therefore, demonstrate a rare evolutionary process of ependymoma involving ADGRL3.

Potassium channels, which are the most diverse group of the ion channel family, play an important role in the repolarization of cardiomyocytes. Recent studies showed that potassium channels, such as KCNQ and HERG/eag, play an important role in regulating adult heart function through shaping the action potential and maintaining the rhythm of cardiac contraction. The potassium channel protein Shaker is the first voltage-gated potassium channel found in Drosophila to maintain the electrical excitability of neurons and muscle cells, but its role in adult cardiac function is still unclear. In this study, Drosophila was used as a model to study the role of Shaker channel in the maintenance of cardiac function under stress and aging. The incidence of heart failure was observed in shaker mutant after external electrical pacing, which simulates cardiac stress. Additionally, The cardiac-specific driver hand4.2 Gal4 was used to specifically knock down the expression of the potassium channel shaker in Drosophila. The cardiac parameter was analyzed at 1, 3, 5 weeks of age on cardiac specific knockdown of shaker using Drosophila adult cardiac physiological assay. The results showed that the mutation of shaker gene seriously affect the cardiac function under stress, demonstrated by significant increase in heart failure rate under electrical stimulation. In addition, cardiac specific knockdown of shaker increased the incidence of arrhythmias in Drosophila at the age of 5 weeks. Cardiac-specific knockdown of shaker reduces life span. Therefore, the results of this study suggest a vital role of the potassium channel shaker in maintaining normal cardiac function during aging.

Rhizoma Musa (the Rhizome of Musa basjoo Sied.et Zucc.) is used as a traditional medical herb of Miao nationality in Guizhou province, in China. It has the efficacy of clearing heat and detoxifying, quenching thirst, diuresis, etc. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that it has hypoglycemic, inhibition of α-glucosidase, and anti-inflammatory activity. However, when the rhizomes of Musa basjoo are dug up, the rhizomes are unable regenerate, and the pseudostem and leaf are discarded, which not only pollutes the environment, but also causes a huge waste of herb resources. In this study, a UPLC-ELSD fingerprint analysis with chemometric method was applied for the evaluation of chemical similarity among rhizome, pseudostem and leaf of Musa Basjoo. The results indicated that the combined method could efficiently analyze and compare the chemical similarity among rhizome, pseudostem, and leaf of Musa Basjoo. The proposed method provides the foundation for the resource substitution of the rhizome, pseudostem, and leaf of Musa Basjoo.

BACKGROUND: Selenium is prioritized to the brain mainly for selenoprotein expression. Selenoprotein T (SELENOT) protects dopaminergic, postmitotic neurons in a mouse model of Parkinson's disease (PD). OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized a proliferative role of SELENOT in neural cells. METHODS: To assess SELENOT status in PD, sedated male C57BL/6 mice at 10-12 wk of age were injected with 6-hydroxydopamine in neurons, and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from 9 healthy subjects (56% men, 68-y-old) and 11 subjects with PD (64% men, 63-y-old). Dopaminergic neural progenitor-like SK-N-SH cells with transient SELENOT overexpression or knockdown were maintained in the presence or absence of the antioxidant N-acetyl-l-cysteine and the calcium channel blocker nimodipine. Cell cycle, proliferation, and signaling parameters were determined by immunoblotting, qPCR, and flow cytometry. RESULTS: SELENOT mRNA abundance was increased (P < 0.05) in SK-N-SH cells treated with 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium iodide (3.5-fold) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from PD patients (1.6-fold). Likewise, SELENOT was expressed in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive dopaminergic neurons of 6-hydroxydopamine-injected mice. Knockdown of SELENOT in SK-N-SH cells suppressed (54%; P < 0.05) 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation but induced (17-47%; P < 0.05) annexin V-positive cells, CASPASE-3 cleavage, and G1/S cell cycle arrest. SELENOT knockdown and overexpression increased (88-120%; P < 0.05) and reduced (37-42%; P < 0.05) both forkhead box O3 and p27, but reduced (51%; P < 0.05) and increased (1.2-fold; P < 0.05) cyclin-dependent kinase 4 protein abundance, respectively. These protein changes were diminished by nimodipine or N-acetyl-l-cysteine treatment (24 h) at steady-state levels. While the N-acetyl-l-cysteine treatment did not influence the reduction in the amount of calcium (13%; P < 0.05) by SELENOT knockdown, the nimodipine treatment reversed the decreased amount of reactive oxygen species (33%; P < 0.05) by SELENOT overexpression. CONCLUSIONS: These cellular and mouse data link SELENOT to neural proliferation, expanding our understanding of selenium protection in PD.

It is well recognized that mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). The mtDNA displacement loop (D-loop) region is known to accumulate structural alterations and mutations. To understand how mtDNA variants contribute to the susceptibility to sporadic PD in Chinese, a total of 500 PD patients and 505 controls were recruited from East China, and their D-loop regions were sequenced. A total of 389 variants were detected out of the 1005 subjects. There were 91 variants with frequencies >1%, which included 88 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 2 deletions and 1 insertion. Amongst, 6 SNPs were significantly associated with sporadic PD. Specifically, the SNPs 151T/C, 189G/A, 16086C/T and 16271C/T contributed to increased susceptibility, while 318C/T and 16134T/C were associated with reduced risk for PD. Further analyses of mtDNA haplogroups and their risk for PD occurrence showed that subjects carrying haplogroup A5 were susceptible while haplogroup B5 carriers were more resistant to the disease. In summary, our study for the first time systematically analyzed mtDNA variants by sequencing the D-loop region in a Chinese population to understand their associations with PD. These results demonstrate that mtDNA variants modulate risk for sporadic PD.

PURPOSE: The updated 2013 American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists guideline recommendations for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) testing have made some major changes in HER2 fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) interpretation criteria with additional FISH equivocal cases. Repeat HER2 testing is recommended after initial HER2 FISH equivocal results; however, little is known about its impact on final HER2 status. The aim of this study is to investigate whether reflex test clarifies HER2 status, and to characterize clinicopathological features of the newly defined HER2 equivocal group. METHODS: A total of 886 consecutive cases of primary invasive breast cancer conducted with dual-probe HER2 FISH testing between November 2013 and December 2015 were reviewed. HER2 immunohistochemistry (IHC) and FISH testing were performed on a different tissue block or a new specimen after initial HER2 FISH equivocal results. RESULTS: Compared to 2007 guideline, 85 (9.6%) cases changed their category by using 2013 guideline. The major change of the 85 cases is that 57 (6.4%) cases in HER2 FISH-negative category changed to equivocal, and the equivocal category cases increased from 36 to 67. HER2 FISH equivocal was significantly associated with HER2 IHC equivocal (2+) and chromosome 17 polysomy (P < 0.01). Repeat testing by IHC and FISH clarified HER2 status in 33 and 42% of HER2 equivocal cases, respectively. Overall 32 (48%) initial HER2 equivocal cases stayed HER2 equivocal after repeat FISH and or IHC testing. These tumors were ER/PR+, with high KI-67 index. CONCLUSION: New guidelines classify more HER2 FISH equivocal cases. Repeat HER2 testing clarifies HER2 status in about 50% of initial HER2 FISH equivocal cases. In addition, HER2 equivocal cases merit further study as there is limited information about prognosis and optimal treatment strategy for this population.

We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from solids in two-color fields. It is found that under the premise of maintaining the same amplitude, the intensity of the second plateau can be enhanced by two to three orders in a proper two-color field compared with the result in the monochromatic field with the same frequency as the driving pulse of the two-color field. This can be attributed to the fact that most excited electrons can be driven to the top of the first conduction band due to the larger vector potential of the two-color fields, which leads to the higher electron population of upper conduction bands. Moreover, we also find that isolated attosecond pulses can be generated from solids by choosing a proper two-color field that allows the electrons to reach the top of the first conduction band only once. This work provides a promising method for extending the range of solid HHG spectra in experiments.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula is one of the most frequent and potentially life-threatening complications following pancreatic resections. Fibrin sealants are introduced to reduce postoperative pancreatic fistula by some surgeons. However, the use of fibrin sealants during pancreatic surgery is controversial. OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety, effectiveness, and potential adverse effects of fibrin sealants for the prevention of postoperative pancreatic fistula following pancreatic surgery. SEARCH METHODS: We searched The Cochrane Library (2015, Issue 7), MEDLINE (1946 to 26 August 2015), EMBASE (1980 to 26 August 2015), Science Citation Index Expanded (1900 to 26 August 2015), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) (1978 to 26 August 2015). SELECTION CRITERIA: We included all randomized controlled trials that compared fibrin sealant group (fibrin glue or fibrin sealant patch) versus control group (no fibrin sealant or placebo) in people undergoing pancreatic surgery. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently identified the trials for inclusion, collected the data, and assessed the risk of bias. We performed the meta-analyses using Review Manager 5. We calculated the risk ratio (RR) for dichotomous outcomes (or a Peto odds ratio for very rare outcomes), and the mean difference (MD) for continuous outcomes with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS: We included nine trials involving 1095 participants who were randomized to the fibrin sealant group (N = 550) and the control group (N = 545) after pancreatic surgery. All of the trials were at high risk of bias. There was no evidence of differences in overall postoperative pancreatic fistula (fibrin sealant 29.6%; control 31.0%; RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.71 to 1.21; P = 0.58; nine studies; low-quality evidence), postoperative mortality (3.1% versus 2.1%; Peto OR 1.29, 95% CI 0.59 to 2.82; P = 0.53; eight studies; very low-quality evidence), overall postoperative morbidity (29.6% versus 28.9%; RR 1.04, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.32; P = 0.77; five studies), reoperation rate (8.7% versus 10.7%; RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.21; P = 0.29; five studies), or length of hospital stay (12.9 days versus 13.1 days; MD -0.73 days, 95% CI -2.20 to 0.74; P = 0.331; six studies) between the groups. The proportion of postoperative pancreatic fistula that was clinically significant was not mentioned in most trials. On inclusion of trials that clearly distinguished clinically significant fistulas, there was inadequate evidence to establish the effect of fibrin sealants on clinically significant postoperative pancreatic fistula (9.4% versus 13.4%; RR 0.72, 95% CI 0.42 to 1.21; P = 0.21; three studies). Quality of life and cost effectiveness were not reported in any of the trials. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Based on the current available evidence, fibrin sealants do not seem to prevent postoperative pancreatic fistula in people undergoing pancreatic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second most common cause of death in the world and in China it has now become the main cause of death. It is also a main cause of adult disability and dependency. Acupuncture for stroke has been used in China for hundreds of years and is increasingly practiced in some Western countries. This is an update of the Cochrane review originally published in 2006 . OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of acupuncture therapy in people with subacute and chronic stroke. We intended to test the following hypotheses: 1) acupuncture can reduce the risk of death or dependency in people with subacute and chronic stroke at the end of treatment and at follow-up; 2) acupuncture can improve neurological deficit and quality of life after treatment and at the end of follow-up; 3) acupuncture can reduce the number of people requiring institutional care; and 4) acupuncture is not associated with any intolerable adverse effects. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register (June 2015), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; Cochrane Library 2015, Issue 7), MEDLINE (1966 to July 2015, Ovid), EMBASE (1980 to July 2015, Ovid), CINAHL (1982 to July 2015, EBSCO), and AMED (1985 to July 2015, Ovid). We also searched the following four Chinese medical databases: China Biological Medicine Database (July 2015); Chinese Science and Technique Journals Database (July 2015); China National Infrastructure (July 2015), and Wan Fang database (July 2015). SELECTION CRITERIA: Truly randomised unconfounded clinical trials among people with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, in the subacute or chronic stage, comparing acupuncture involving needling with placebo acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or no acupuncture. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently selected trials for inclusion, assessed quality, extracted and cross-checked the data. MAIN RESULTS: We included 31 trials with a total of 2257 participants in the subacute or chronic stages of stroke. The methodological quality of most of the included trials was not high. The quality of evidence for the main outcomes was low or very low based on the assessment by the system of Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE).Two trials compared real acupuncture plus baseline treatment with sham acupuncture plus baseline treatment. There was no evidence of differences in the changes of motor function and quality of life between real acupuncture and sham acupuncture for people with stroke in the convalescent stage.Twenty-nine trials compared acupuncture plus baseline treatment versus baseline treatment alone. Compared with no acupuncture, for people with stroke in the convalescent phase, acupuncture had beneficial effects on the improvement of dependency (activity of daily living) measured by Barthel Index (nine trials, 616 participants; mean difference (MD) 9.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.34 to 14.05; GRADE very low), global neurological deficiency (seven trials, 543 participants; odds ratio (OR) 3.89, 95% CI 1.78 to 8.49; GRADE low), and specific neurological impairments including motor function measured by Fugl-Meyer Assessment (four trials, 245 participants; MD 6.16, 95% CI 4.20 to 8.11; GRADE low), cognitive function measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (five trials, 278 participants; MD 2.54, 95% CI 0.03 to 5.05; GRADE very low), depression measured by the Hamilton Depression Scale (six trials, 552 participants; MD -2.58, 95% CI -3.28 to -1.87; GRADE very low), swallowing function measured by drinking test (two trials, 200 participants; MD -1.11, 95% CI -2.08 to -0.14; GRADE very low), and pain measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (two trials, 118 participants; MD -2.88, 95% CI -3.68 to -2.09; GRADE low). Sickness caused by acupuncture and intolerance of pain at acupoints were reported in a few participants with stroke in the acupuncture groups. No data on death, the proportion of people requiring institutional care or requiring extensive family support, and all-cause mortality were available in all included trials. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: From the available evidence, acupuncture may have beneficial effects on improving dependency, global neurological deficiency, and some specific neurological impairments for people with stroke in the convalescent stage, with no obvious serious adverse events. However, most included trials were of inadequate quality and size. There is, therefore, inadequate evidence to draw any conclusions about its routine use. Rigorously designed, randomised, multi-centre, large sample trials of acupuncture for stroke are needed to further assess its effects.

In the study, Zinc dibenzyl dithiocarbamate (ZBDC) was synthesized with one-step method. ZBDC was detected and characterized with FTIR,UV-Vis,XRD,TG-DSC. Its micro-structure and intrinsic regularity were revealed. Chemical bond types into ZBDC molecule were revealed with FTIR. The final product was determined as ZBDC. Two absorption peaks were detected with UV-Vis at 209.8,266.1 nm respectively, due to n→σ*, π→π* electronic transitions. It could provide experimental basis for enterprise to test ZBDC product quality and speculate its structure. ZBDC phase composition and structure were revealed through crystallographic data from XRD detecting such as cell parameters, crystal face index. The phase composition and qualitative identification of ZBDC structure were completed. Two kinds of information were detected with TG-DSC as quality change and thermal effect. There were three absorption peaks of 194.5,361.1,433.5 ℃, due to transition peak and decomposition phase of ZBDC respectively. The decomposition temperature of ZBDC was very high. It could provided reference for research on rubber vulcanizing properties with ZBDC on rubber vulcanizing machine.

In the study, zinc methyl mercaptobenzimidazole (MMBZ) was synthesized by one-step method. MMBZ was detecued and characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, XRD, TG-DSC. Its micro-structure and intrinsic regularity were revealed. Chemical bond types into MMBZ molecule were revealed by FTIR. The final product was determined MMBZ. There absorption peaks were detected by UV-Vis at 219.6,245.5,302.2 nm respectively, due to n→σ(*),π→π(*),π→π(*) electronic transitions, led by S­C, benzene and five element heterocyclic in MMBZ molecule. It could provide experimental basis with enterprise to test MMBZ product quality and speculate its structure. It was shown that MMB was a ligand of MMBZ, and its basic structure of MMB was retained still by XRD spectra. The structure of MMBZ molecule was amorphous. Two kinds of information were detected with TG-DSC as quality change and thermal effect. There were five absorption peaks of 67.5, 155.3, 253.7, 324.8, 391.3 ℃, due to impurity solvent decomposition peak, phase transition peak and decomposition of MMBZ respectively. The scheme of one step preparation of composite environment-friendly rubber antioxidant MMBZ was feasible. The structure of MMBZ could be speculated by results of its detecting. It could provide the basis of experimental data on association MMBZ performance, exploring its anti-aging mechanism and extending the scope of MMBZ application.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a chronic airways disease predominantly affecting East Asians. Macrolides, a class of antibiotics, have been used as the main treatment for DPB, based on evidence from retrospective and non-randomised studies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of macrolides for DPB. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL (2014, Issue 6), MEDLINE (1966 to July week 1, 2014), EMBASE (1974 to July 2014), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) (1978 to July 2014), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) (1974 to July 2014), KoreaMed (1997 to July 2014) and Database of Japana Centra Revuo Medicina (1983 to July 2014). SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs assessing the effect of macrolides for DPB. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two review authors independently assessed study quality and subsequent risk of bias according to The Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias. The primary outcomes were five-year survival rate, lung function and clinical response. We used risk ratios (RR) for individual trial results in the data analysis and measured all outcomes with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS: Only one RCT (19 participants) with significant methodological limitations was included in this review. It found that the computerised tomography images of all participants treated with a long-term, low-dose macrolide (erythromycin) improved from baseline, while the images of 71.4% of participants in the control group (with no treatment) worsened and 28.6% remained unchanged. Adverse effects were not reported. This review was previously published in 2010 and 2013. For this 2014 update, we identified no new trials for inclusion or exclusion. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: There is little evidence for macrolides in the treatment of DPB. We are therefore unable to make any new recommendations. It may be reasonable to use low-dose macrolides soon after diagnosis is made and to continue this treatment for at least six months, according to current guidelines.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) supported on spherical alumina substrate was prepared by using sol-gel method combined with dip-coating process. The surface morphology and structure of the synthesized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The results show that the morphology of the supported TiO2 composite material was obviously different from that of the original support. It reveals a layer formed by anatase TiO2 nanoparticles of 10-20 nm was deposited on the alumina substrate. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses on the spherical alumina substrate and the resulting TiO2 composite catalyst were performed to determine the TiO2 loading content in the samples. It indicates that the TiO2 loading content on alumina substrate could be effectively increased by increasing the times of dip-coating alumina support in TiO2 sol. When dip-coating times increased to 5, the TiO2 loading content increased from 3.8 Wt. % to 15.7 Wt. %. In addition, the photocatalytic performances of the supported TiO2 materials prepared by different dip-coating times have been investigated by degrading methylene blue. It was found that the surface morphology of the supported TiO2 material was not only improved, but also the photocatalytic activity could be promoted significantly by increasing the dip-coating times. When the alumina substrate was dip-coated in TiO2 sol from 1 to 4 times, the degradation rate of methylene blue increased from 40% to 83.1%. However, after dip-coating the alumina support in TiO2 sol for 5 times, the degradation of methylene blue was only up to 85.6%. This indicates that the photocatalytic activity increased slowly when the TiO2 content in the supported catalyst was up to some extent. It is attributed to the continuous dip-coating resulted in less opportunities and weak intensity of illumination for the TiO2 nano-particles that under lower layer. The photocatalytic activity was relatively stable after repeated use of the supported TiO2 material for 5 times.

BACKGROUND: Statin therapy has shown to deplete atherosclerotic plaque lipid content and induce plaque regression. However, how early the plaque lipid depletion can occur with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering in humans in vivo has not been fully described. METHODS: We enrolled 43 lipid treatment naïve subjects with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis and LDL-C ≥ 100 and ≤ 250 mg/dl. Rosuvastatin 5-20 mg/day was used to lower LDL-C levels to < 80 mg/dl. Lipid profile and carotid MRI scans were obtained at baseline, 3, 12, and 24 months. Carotid plaque lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC) and plaque burden were measured and compared between baseline and during treatment. RESULTS: Among the 32 subjects who completed the study, at 3 months, an average dose of rosuvastatin of 11 mg/day lowered LDL-C levels by 47% (125.2 ± 24.4 mg/dl vs. 66.7 ± 17.3 mg/dl, p < 0.001). There were no statistically significant changes in total wall volume, percent wall volume or lumen volume. However, LRNC volume was significantly decreased by 7.9 mm3, a reduction of 7.3% (111.5 ± 104.2 mm3 vs. 103.6 ± 95.8 mm3, p = 0.044). Similarly, % LRNC was also significantly decreased from 18.9 ± 11.9% to 17.9 ± 11.5% (p = 0.02) at 3 months. Both LRNC volume and % LRNC continued to decrease moderately at 12 and 24 months, although this trend was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Among a small number of lipid treatment naïve subjects, rosuvastatin therapy may induce a rapid and lasting decrease in carotid plaque lipid content as assessed by MRI. BACKGROUND: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are widely used in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, yet controversy exists about their impact on residual kidney function. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to evaluate the benefits and harms of ACEis and ARBs for preserving residual kidney function in PD patients. SEARCH METHODS: The Cochrane Renal Group's specialised register, Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE (OvidSP interface), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and other resources were searched by applying a prespecified comprehensive search strategy. Date of last search: 01 May 2014. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs comparing ACEis or ARBs with placebo, other antihypertensive drugs or each other in PD patients were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Screening, selection, data extraction and quality assessments for each retrieved article were carried out by two authors using standardised forms. Authors were contacted when published data were incomplete. Statistical analyses were performed using the random effects model and results expressed as risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Heterogeneity among studies was explored using the Cochran Q statistic and the I² test, subgroup analyses and random effects meta-regression. MAIN RESULTS: Six open-label studies (257 patients) were identified. One study compared ACEi with other antihypertensive drugs, three compared ARBs with other antihypertensive drugs, and two studies compared an ARB with an ACEi. Long-term use (≥ 12 months) of an ARB showed significantly benefit of preserving residual kidney function in continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) patients (MD 1.11 mL/min/1.73 m², 95% CI 0.38 to 1.83), although there was no significant benefit when an ARB were used short-term (≤ six months). One study showed that compared with other antihypertensive drugs, long-term use (12 months) of the ACEi ramipril showed a significant reduction in the decline of residual kidney function in patients on CAPD (MD -0.93 mL/min/1.73m², 95% CI -0.75 to -0.11), and delayed the progression to complete anuria (RR 0.64, 95% CI 0.41 to 0.99). There was no significant difference in serum potassium, urinary protein excretion, Kt/V, weekly creatinine clearance and blood pressure for ARBs versus other antihypertensive drugs. Compared with other antihypertensive drugs, ramipril showed no difference in mortality and cardiovascular events. Compared with an ACEi, ARBs did not show any difference in residual kidney function.The selection bias assessment was low in four studies and unclear in two. Five studies were open-label; however the primary outcome (residual kidney function) was obtained objectively from laboratory tests, and were not likely to be influenced by the lack of blinding. Reporting bias was unclear in all six studies. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Compared with other antihypertensive drugs, long-term use (≥ 12 months) of ACEis or ARBs showed additional benefits of preserving residual kidney function in CAPD patients. There was no significant difference on residual kidney function preservation between ARBs and ACEis. However, limited by the small number of RCTs enrolling small number of participants, there is currently insufficient evidence to support the use of an ACEi or an ARB as first line antihypertensive therapy in PD patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem which is at high increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and renal failure. Deterioration of kidney function causes an increase in circulating toxins, which, in turn promotes the progression of CKD. Oral adsorbents with capacity to adsorb and remove substances including uraemic toxins from the intestine could be effective in minimising kidney injury. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the benefits and harms of oral adsorbents for preventing or delaying the progression of CKD. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Renal Group's Specialised Register (to 22 September 2014) through contact with the Trials' Search Co-ordinator using search terms relevant to this review. The following four Chinese medical databases were also searched: China Biological Medicine Database (1979 to May 2012); Chinese Science and Technique Journals Database (to May 2012); China National Infrastructure (to May 2012); Wan Fang database (to May 2012). SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs comparing any oral adsorbents for preventing or delaying the progression of CKD. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two authors independently assessed and extracted information. Information was collected on methods, participants, interventions and outcomes (incidence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), mortality, quality of life and adverse events). Results were expressed as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or as mean differences (MD) for continuous data with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Adverse events were expressed as risk differences (RD). MAIN RESULTS: Fifteen studies (1590 patients) conducted in Japan, China, and the USA were identified. The risk of bias of the included studies was moderate or high and the sample sizes were small.Three studies compared oral AST-120 plus routine treatment with placebo plus routine treatment; however data on our outcome measures of interest were not reported in two studies. These studies did not assess or did not provide data for our primary outcomes of interest (incidence of ESKD; time to ESKD; all-cause mortality). There was no significant difference in the changes of serum creatinine (SCr), slope of 1/SCr over time and creatinine clearance (CrCl) between AST-120 and placebo for patients with CKD.Eight studies compared oral AST-120 plus routine treatment with routine treatment alone; data on our outcome measures of interest were not reported in one study. There was no significant difference in incidence of ESKD, all-cause mortality and the change in health-related quality of life between AST-120 and routine treatment for patients with CKD. AST-120 showed beneficial effects on delaying the decline of kidney function measured by using the slope of change in estimated CrCl (SMD 0.39, 95% CI 0.21 to 0.5) and the mean changes of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) (MD -0.76 mL/min/mo, 95% CI -0.82 to -0.70) for patients with CKD; AST-120 was not superior to routine treatment in retarding the decline of kidney function measured by using the 1/SCr slope over time, occurrence of increase in SCr concentration, doubling of SCr concentration, changes in GFR from baseline (mL/min/1.73 m²) and slope of the eGFR curve (mL/min/mo) for patients with CKD.Three studies compared oral Ai Xi Te plus routine treatment with routine treatment alone. These studies did not assess our primary outcomes of interest. Compared with routine treatment, Ai Xi Te had positive effects on reducing SCr (MD -113.40 (µmol/L), 95% CI -188.69 to -38.10) and retarding the decline of CrCl (MD 9.74 (mL/min), 95% CI 4.28 to 15.21) for patients with CKD.One study compared oral Niaoduqing granules plus routine treatment with routine treatment alone, but did not assess our primary outcomes of interest. Compared with routine treatment, Niaoduqing granules had positive effects on reducing SCr (MD -135.60 (µmol/L), 95% CI -198.03 to -73.17) and CrCl (MD 13.30 (mL/min), 95% CI 5.69 to 20.91).The most commonly reported adverse events associated with AST-120 and Ai Xi Te were gastrointestinal symptoms however no serious adverse events were reported. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Few studies reported our primary outcomes of interest. For our secondary outcomes, there is evidence of limited quality that AST-120, Ai Xi Te and Niaoduqing granules may have positive effects on delaying the decline of kidney function. There were no serious adverse events for any of the interventions in patients with CKD. Given the lack of information for our primary outcomes, the low methodological quality of most studies, and the small sample sizes, there is no strong evidence on the effectiveness of these oral adsorbents.

A series of 354 polyester-cotton blend fabrics were studied by the near-infrared spectra (NIRS) technology, and a NIR qualitative analysis model for different spectral characteristics was established by partial least squares (PLS) method combined with qualitative identification coefficient. There were two types of spectrum for dying polyester-cotton blend fabrics: normal spectrum and slash spectrum. The slash spectrum loses its spectral characteristics, which are effected by the samples' dyes, pigments, matting agents and other chemical additives. It was in low recognition rate when the model was established by the total sample set, so the samples were divided into two types of sets: normal spectrum sample set and slash spectrum sample set, and two NIR qualitative analysis models were established respectively. After the of models were established the model's spectral region, pretreatment methods and factors were optimized based on the validation results, and the robustness and reliability of the model can be improved lately. The results showed that the model recognition rate was improved greatly when they were established respectively, the recognition rate reached up to 99% when the two models were verified by the internal validation. RC (relation coefficient of calibration) values of the normal spectrum model and slash spectrum model were 0.991 and 0.991 respectively, RP (relation coefficient of prediction) values of them were 0.983 and 0.984 respectively, SEC (standard error of calibration) values of them were 0.887 and 0.453 respectively, SEP (standard error of prediction) values of them were 1.131 and 0.573 respectively. A series of 150 bounds samples reached used to verify the normal spectrum model and slash spectrum model and the recognition rate reached up to 91.33% and 88.00% respectively. It showed that the NIR qualitative analysis model can be used for identification in the recycle site for the polyester-cotton blend fabrics.

BACKGROUND: B56ε is a regulatory subunit of the serine/threonine protein phosphatase 2A, which is abnormally expressed in tumors and regulates various tumor cell functions. At present, the application of B56ε in pan-cancer lacks a comprehensive analysis, and its role and mechanism in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still unclear. AIM: To analyze B56ε in pan-cancer, and explore its role and mechanism in HCC. METHODS: The Cancer Genome Atlas, Genotype-Tissue Expression, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis, and Tumor Immune Estimation Resource databases were used to analyze B56ε expression, prognostic mutations, somatic copy number alterations, and tumor immune characteristics in 33 tumors. The relationships between B56ε expression levels and drug sensitivity, immunotherapy, immune checkpoints, and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-related genes were further analyzed. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was performed to reveal the role of B56ε in HCC. The Cell Counting Kit-8, plate cloning, wound healing, and transwell assays were conducted to assess the effects of B56ε interference on the malignant behavior of HCC cells. RESULTS: In most tumors, B56ε expression was upregulated, and high B56ε expression was a risk factor for adrenocortical cancer, HCC, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, and pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (all P < 0.05). B56ε expression levels were correlated with a variety of immune cells, such as T helper 17 cells, B cells, and macrophages. There was a positive correlation between B56ε expression levels with immune checkpoint genes and HLA-related genes (all P < 0.05). The expression of B56ε was negatively correlated with the sensitivity of most chemotherapy drugs, but a small number showed a positive correlation (all P < 0.05). GSEA analysis showed that B56ε expression was related to the cancer pathway, p53 downstream pathway, and interleukin-mediated signaling in HCC. Knockdown of B56ε expression in HCC cells inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion capacity of tumor cells. CONCLUSION: B56ε is associated with the microenvironment, immune evasion, and immune cell infiltration of multiple tumors. B56ε plays an important role in HCC progression, supporting it as a prognostic marker and potential therapeutic target for HCC.
