RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Spina bifida is a major disorder that occurs when the membranes of the spinal cord and medulla fail to close during the embryonic period and affects the individual for the rest of life. Some physical, mental, and social difficulties can be observed in the lives of children with spina bifida after surgery. The aim of this study is to determine what kind of volumetric changes occur in the brain when spina bifida occurs in different regions of the cord. METHODS: The volume of intracranial structures of 14 children aged 1 to 9 years (7 cervical, 7 lumbosacral) with different levels of spina bifida compared with vol2Brain. RESULTS: Spina bifida occurring in the cervical region was found to cause a greater volumetric reduction in subcortical structures, cortex and gyrus than spina bifida occurring in the lumbosacral region. CONCLUSION: We believe that our study will help clinicians involved in the management of this disorder.

The aim of this study was to determine the optimal method for teaching human anatomy by comparing classical laboratory (traditional), video-assisted and three-dimensional (3D) application methods for students who had previously received only online academic anatomy education. GPower 3.1.9.4 was used for power analysis to establish sample size. After power analysis, it was decided to have 28 people in each group. Participants were given pre-anatomy education tests and divided into four matched groups: Group 1: no additional education, Group 2: Video-assisted education, Group 3: Applied 3D anatomy education, Group 4: Practical laboratory anatomy education. Each group received 5 weeks of education in muscular system anatomy. The pre-test results showed no statistically significant differences among the groups. The post-test results showed statistically significant improvement in scores (p < 0.001): group 4; 59%, group 3; 33%, group 2; 9%. The difference between group 1 and group 2 was statistically significant (p < 0.01). The difference between the groups in post hoc comparisons with all other groups was also statistically significant (p < 0.001). The results of this study show that while the optimal anatomy teaching method is conservative, the best alternative is 3D application.

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is believed to be caused by genetic, neurological, osseous growth anomalies, histological variables including muscle fiber percentage and core structure changes, metabolic and hormonal dysfunction, vestibular dysfunction, and platelet microarchitecture. The objective of this study was to contribute to the determination of the cause of AIS by analyzing the changes in pineal gland volume in AIS cases. METHODS: Study (AIS) and control group were each comprised of 26 patients who met the inclusion requirements. Scoliosis radiograph and MRI of the pineal glands were used for radiological examinations. The distribution of age, gender, Risser grading for skeletal radiological development, and sexual maturation according to Tanner categorization were uniform and statistically insignificant between groups. RESULTS: When the pineal gland volumes of the cases were evaluated according to age, the AIS group was found to have significantly reduced pineal gland volumes in all age groups. The pineal gland volume was found to be 38.1% lower in the AIS group compared to the control group (p˂0.001). In the AIS group, patients aged 13 years had the lowest pineal gland volume (77.2 ± 13.86 mm3), while patients aged 15 years had the highest volume (97.9 ± 16.47 mm3). CONCLUSION: Changes in pineal gland volume support the role of the pineal gland in the etiopathogenesis of AIS.

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to determine the effect of intrauterine carbamazepine (CBZ) exposure on fetal bone development during pregnancy. METHODS: In the study, 24 female Wistar pregnant rats were used. Rats were 20 weeks old. They had an average body weight of 150-200 g. Pregnant rats were randomly selected and divided (n = 6) into a control group, low-dose CBZ (10 mg/kg/day) group, medium-dose CBZ (25 mg/kg/day) group, and high-dose CBZ (50 mg/kg/day) group. The ossification length (mm) and ossification area (mm2 ) of the long bones of the fetuses in the experimental and control groups were calculated. The densities of alkaline phosphatase (AP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) were analyzed. The ossification regions of the femurs of the fetuses were examined under a light microscope. Microstructural images of the femurs were evaluated with scanning electron microscope photographs. The densities of minerals involved in the ossification process were analyzed. RESULTS: According to the results of the study, all three doses of CBZ caused loss of ossification areas, and it was observed that this bone loss also increased statistically significantly depending on the dose increase (p < .05). Calcium concentration decreased in the CBZ groups. When the electron microscope images were examined, it was determined that the cartilage matrix of the CBZ groups was thinned. In the histological evaluation of the groups, narrowing of the primary bone collar and smaller bone spicules in the ossification region compared to the control group were noted due to the increase in dose in the CBZ groups. In immunohistochemical staining, it was observed that the TRAP and AP expression values of the femurs were the lowest in the CBZ groups. These decreases were also statistically significant when compared with the control group. SIGNIFICANCE: It was revealed with both microscopic and macroscopic findings that exposure to intrauterine CBZ negatively affected ossification and bone growth.

Aza-BODIPY compounds with methoxy groups at -3 and -5 and triphenylamine moieties at -1 and -7 positions with and without heavy bromine atoms at -2 and -6 positions have been designed and synthesized. The chemical structures of the novel compounds were fully characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and HRMS-TOF-ESI techniques. Steady-state absorption and emission features were investigated to analyze ground-state interactions. The effects of triphenylamine moieties and bromine atoms on charge transfer dynamics and two-photon absorption (TPA) properties were investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements and open-aperture (OA) Z-scan experiments, respectively. Contrary to popular belief, the compound containing heavy bromine atoms and triphenylamine moieties did not demonstrate any triplet transition. Since the triphenylamine moiety has high electron-donating properties and a long conjugation length, it exhibited intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) features from electron-donating moieties to the aza-BODIPY core. Additionally, it is concluded that the excited-state lifetime is shortened in the presence of a bromine atom with triphenylamine moieties. This result is rather interesting since the triplet excited state is quenched by the triphenylamine moiety despite the presence of a heavy bromine atom. The performed OA Z-scan experiments revealed that the aza-BODIPY compound containing bromine atoms has a higher TPA cross-section value (116 GM) due to efficient intramolecular charge transfer compared to that without bromine atoms (89 GM). Additionally, in the theoretical calculations, it was found that the charge transfer percentage (CT%) was the strongest in compounds containing bromine atoms.

Novel symmetrical aza-borondipyrromethene (aza-BODIPY) compounds bearing 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-methoxybiphenyl, 2,4-dimethoxybipheny, 4-bromophenyl and N,N-diphenyl-4-biphenylamine groups on the 3, 3,5 and 2,6 positions of aza-BODIPY core were synthesized via Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions while unsymmetrical analogues were obtained from the starting mono Br-substituted aza-BODIPY material which was obtained from nitrosolated pyrrole derivative. The characterizations were performed by means of 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FTIR and HRMS-TOF-ESI techniques. The spectral properties of the aza-BODIPY derivatives were investigated using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The novel compounds with extended conjugation have broadband absorption in near infrared region and show significant shifts on their absorption and fluorescence spectra compared to unsubstituted analogues. The highest bathochromic shifts were observed π-extended and strong electron donating groups at 3,5 positions of the aza-BODIPY scaffold. Depend on substitution positions of attached groups to the indacene core, the fluorescence quantum yields of chromophores were determined to be drastic changes. The singlet oxygen generation capability of the compounds were evaluated and 2,6-bromine substituted compounds AA1 and CC1 showed high singlet oxygen quantum yields (71% and 74%, respectively). Enhanced photophysical properties such as intense absorption, extended conjugation and singlet oxygen production make the investigated aza-BODIPYs promising candidates for photodynamic therapy applications and organic photovoltaic cells in NIR region.

Skeletal system and some organs development changes in rat fetuses with 30 and 60 mg/kg caffeine and melatonin's (10 mg/kg) protective role against rat fetuses were investigated. Groups (n = 4) were formed as Control, LDC, HDC, LDC+melatonin, HDC+melatonin and melatonin. Fetuses were taken by cesarean section and stained using dual skeletal staining method and FESEM. TRAP and AP immune-reactivity concentrations were calculated.  Oxidative stress and inflammatory markers were also measured by liver, bone and placenta samples.  TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, VEGF-A, SOST and Fetuin-A levels were measured in tissue by using ELISA. TBARS, SOD, GSH, GSSG, TOS, TAS, measured by spectrophotometric assay method.  The mRNA levels of Agtr2 gene expressed in placental tissues of control rats and in placental tissues of rats exposed to HDC, LDC, MEL, HDC+MEL, LDC+MEL were analyzed by Real-time PCR. The gene expressions of Agtr2 were significantly upregulated in the placentas exposed to HDC, MEL, HDC+MEL and LDC+MEL (P<0,001). No significant difference in samples of the LDC group (P>0,05). According to these data, caffeine used during pregnancy delayed ossification; melatonin, a powerful antioxidant, was found to eliminate this effect. Besides, changes in angiotensin receptor expression observed in response to a caffeine and melatonin exposure result from high dose and join effect.

BACKGROUND:: Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most commonly produced chemicals in the world. BPA is used in products such as food packaging, personal care products, detergents, and plastic bottles. This study was conducted to determine the effect of BPA on fetal bone development. MATERIAL AND METHODS:: In this study, 16 pregnant female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The rats were divided into four groups: the control group and 0.5 mg/kg/day, 5 mg/kg/day, and 50 mg/kg/day dose BPA groups. The skeletal system development of fetuses was examined with double skeletal and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining (tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and the alkaline phosphatase (AP) expressions) methods. RESULTS:: The highest ossification rates in the humerus, radius, and ulna were detected as 41.05%, 39.25%, and 37.26% in the control group, respectively. The highest ossification rates in the femur, tibia, and fibula were detected as 23.04%, 30.73%, and 32.78% in the control group, respectively. Statistically significant differences were found between control and experimental groups in the TRAP and AP expression of the femur by IHC staining ( p < 0.001). CONCLUSION:: Exposure to BPA during pregnancy adversely affected ossification and bone growth. A dose-dependent decrease was observed in the rate of ossification.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, with the development of technology, screen exposure among university students has increased and caused various physical and psychological effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between screen exposure and neck disability, headache, stress, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders in university students. METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-six students were evaluated online in this study. Study outcomes were headache, depression, anxiety, stress, neck disability, and sleep quality. RESULTS: When the screen exposure was examined, it was observed that the stress, anxiety, and depression levels of the students increased as the smartphone use increased (p<0.05). Headache severity (p=0.028) in those who use smartphones for 7 h or more; It was observed that the frequency of severe neck disability increased in those who used a smartphone or computer for 7 h or more (p=0.005, p=0.026). CONCLUSION: To prevent physical and psychological problems that may arise due to the increase in screen use time in university students, it is necessary to monitor the frequency of screen use of the students, to organize trainings that explain the physical and psychological effects of long-term screen exposure and increase the level of awareness.

Tayadhuq, also known as Theodocus/Théodoros (d. early 8th century AD), was educated in the Gondes̲h̲apur School and served the Sassanid kings. During this period, he contacted the Umayyad court and became the physician of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf (d. 715 AD), the general governor of the Eastern regions of the caliphate. In addition to his knowledge on the Sassanid scientific tradition, Tayadhuq had a significant role in transferring this tradition to the Islamic world. His ideas were later followed by polymath physicians such as Rhazes (Abu Bakr al-Razi, d. 925 AD), Avicenna (Ibn Sina, d. 1037 AD), and others who lived after him. His medical works were of great importance to the development of early Islamic medicine. Therefore, this study will attempt to illuminate this forgotten scholar's medical knowledge, the works he produced, and finally illustrate his influences on later Muslim physicians.

While the importance of beneficial soil microorganisms for soil health and crop performance has been receiving ever-increasing attention, Serendipita indica has been widely studied as a fungal root endophyte with significant potential for increasing the stress tolerance of host plants. Boron (B) toxicity as an adverse soil condition is particularly prevalent in arid and semi-arid regions and threatens crop production. Studies on S. indica-wheat symbiosis are limited, and effects of S. indica on crops have never been reported in the context of B toxicity. Here, two pot experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions to investigate the effects of S. indica on the growth and yield parameters of bread (Triticum aestivum) and durum wheat (Triticum durum) grown at different levels of B toxicity in native vs. sterilized soil, and parameters related to root colonization, membrane damage, oxidative stress, chlorophyll, and mineral nutrition were measured to elucidate the physiological mechanisms of damage and benefit. Boron toxicity decreased early vegetative growth and grain yield, but it did not affect the straw dry weight of mature plants, whereas S. indica significantly enhanced the vegetative growth, straw dry weight, and the grain number of both wheat species. Membrane damage as demonstrated by increased lipid peroxidation and relative electrolyte leakage was caused by B toxicity and alleviated by S. indica. The benefits provided by S. indica could not be attributed to any significant changes in tissue concentrations of B or other minerals such as phosphorus. Soil sterilization generally improved plant performance but it did not consistently strengthen or weaken the effects of S. indica. The presented results suggest that S. indica may be used as an effective microbial inoculant to enhance wheat growth under adverse soil conditions such as B toxicity through mechanisms that are possibly unrelated to mineral homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), sphincterotomy, balloon biliary tract scanning, and plastic stenting in diagnosing and treating bile duct leakage after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hydatid cyst surgery in this study. METHODS: The study evaluated patients who underwent ERCP, sphincterotomy, and stenting for post-operative bile leakage. The patients were grouped under 4 groups (cystic duct stump, sac bed, hydatid cyst, and choledochal) according to the bile leakage de-tected in the ERCP procedure. The success of the procedure after the ERCP was evaluated by drain extraction time, whether early complications such as bleeding, pancreatitis, and perforation developed due to the ERCP procedure and the presence of obstructive pathology in ERCP. RESULTS: Clinical improvement was observed in 65/73 (89%) patients who underwent successful ERCP procedures, and their drains could be removed. The mean drain removal time was 32.69±23.32 days. After laparoscopic cholecystectomy, bile leakage was most frequently from the cystic duct stump. There was no difference between the groups in procedural success rates. Drain removal time was shorter in the patient group with leakage from the cystic duct compared to the other three groups (P<0.05). After the ERCP procedure, 5/73 (6.9%) patients had minor ERCP complications, which improved with medical treatment. No major ERCP complication was observed. In addition, 25/73 patients (34.2%) had obstructive pathology such as biliary stone and hydatid membrane. CONCLUSION: In patients with biliary leak due to laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hydatid cyst surgery, ERCP, sphincterotomy, balloon scanning, and plastic stenting are both highly effective and reliable options. They should be considered as the first-choice treat-ment approach in this patient group.

PURPOSE: Neuroimaging studies have shown that anosmia is accompanied by a decreased olfactory bulb volume, yet little is known about alterations in cerebral and cerebellar lobule volumes. The purpose of this study was to investigate structural brain alterations in anosmic patients. METHODS: Sixteen anosmic patients (mean age 42.62 ± 16.57 years; 6 women and 10 men) and 16 healthy controls (mean age 43.37 ± 18.98 years; 9 women and 7 men) were included in this retrospective study. All subjects who underwent magnetic resonance imaging scans were analyzed using VolBrain and voxel-based morphometry after olfactory testing. RESULTS: Despite being statistically insignificant, analysis using VBM revealed greater gray matter (GM) and white matter in the anosmia group compared to the healthy subjects. However, decreased GM (p < 0.001) and increased cerebellar (p = 0.046) volumes were observed in the anosmic patients. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed structural brain alterations in specific areas beyond the olfactory bulb. Our results indicate that the cerebellum may play an exceptional role in the olfactory process and that this will be worth evaluating with further dynamic neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Aortic aneurysms (AA) are enlargement of the aorta silently until diagnosing, not detectable on physical examination, and usually incidentally discovered during radiologic scanning for other reasons. It can get bigger sizes and can result in life-threatening outcomes if not detected early on. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between ascending aortic diameter and cardiac parameters that can be detected with tomography or/and echocardiography. Newly diagnosed (n: 85) ascending AA patients and healthy individuals (n: 86) who have not any thoracic pathology in computed tomography (CT) scans included to the study. Echocardiographically determined left atrial dimension (LAD), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVDs), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWd) values of each patient were recorded. The thorax diameters, ascending aorta diameters and cardiac volume values recorded from CT scans. The obtained findings were statistically compared. RESULTS: Positive correlation was found between aortic diameter and aging (p: 0.000). Increased thorax diameter and cardiac volume values were detected in ascending AA cases (p < 0.05). It was found to be ascending aortic diameter was positively correlated with thorax diameter and cardiac volume (0.50 < r ≤ 0.70) values and higher aortic diameter, cardiac volume, thorax diameter values were detected in male individuals when compared with the female gender. There was no significant correlation between LVEF, LVDd, and LVDs values and aortic diameter. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac volume and thorax diameter were found as strongly correlated with the diameter of the ascending aorta. The clarifying of these parameters with larger cohorts might be beneficial for the estimation of the progression of ascending AA.

Background: Recent literature involves many cases with lymphoma and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) with or without the use of TNF inhibitors. Herein, we report a patient, a 56-year-old Human Leukocyte Antigen-B27 (HLA-B27) positive man with four years history of AS who was still under treatment with infliximab with clinical remission. He was admitted with a new-onset, 6-week history of bloody diarrhoea with mucus, abdominal pain, fever, and weight loss. An ileocolonoscopy showed linear ileocecal valve ulcers. Histopathological findings of ileocecal valve ulcers revealed peripheral T-cell lymphoma of the small intestine. Infliximab was interrupted because of the possible progression of the lymphoma. Methods: We aimed to emphasize the underlying potential pathogenic mechanisms and to review the related literature. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database between January 1980 and November 2020. The keywords including 'ankylosing spondylitis' and 'lymphoma' were used. Conclusion: TNFi use, immunosuppression, and chronic inflammation may be related to the development of lymphoma in chronic inflammatory diseases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this experimental rat study was to investigate the effectiveness of vitamin B12 (Vit-B12) against the teratogenic effects of nicotine use during pregnancy in the fetus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen Wistar-Albino pregnant rats were divided into six groups (n=3, each) as Group 1 (control), Group 2 (Vit-B12), Group 3 (nicotine 3 mg/kg/day), Group 4 (nicotine 3 mg/kg/day + Vit-B12), Group 5 (nicotine 6 mg/kg/day) and Group 6 (nicotine 6 mg/kg/day + Vit-B12). Nicotine was administered subcutaneously and Vit-B12 was administered intraperitoneally for 20 days. The skeletal systems of the embryos were stained using the double-staining method. The total bone length (TBL), the length of the ossified part, and the ossification rate were calculated using the ImageJ program. In addition, the weight and crown-rump length (CRL) of the embryos were measured and recorded. RESULTS: Clinical shock effect was observed in all rats administered nicotine. A significant decrease in weight, CRL, and TBL was measured in Group 3 (p=0.0081) and, particularly in Group 5 (p=0.026), which were given only nicotine, compared to other groups. In the morphometric measurements of Group 4 and Group 6 to which Vit-B12 was added, values close to the control group were measured (p=0.173). The data of Group 6 were statistically significantly larger than Group 5 (p=0.007), while it was statistically smaller than Group 1 (p=0.0038). CONCLUSION: Nicotine use negatively affects the morphological development of the embryo. On the other hand, Vit-B12 provides benefits in reducing these negative effects.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to measure and compare bilateral carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), bilateral jugular, common femoral, and main portal vein wall thicknesses (VWTs) in Behçet's disease (BD) patients with and without vascular involvement to obtain a cut-off value for vascular complications and determine their relationship with disease activity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty-three BD patients (41 males, 22 females; median age: 38.0 years; min 20 - max 71 years) and 30 healthy control subjects (14 males, 16 females; median age: 40.3 years; min 21 - max 60 years) were included in this cross-sectional study between February and March 2020. According to imaging findings, BD patients were divided into two groups as those with and without vascular complications. Disease duration, medical treatment and BD manifestations of patients were questioned. Disease activity was evaluated using the Behçet's Disease Current Activity Form (BDCAF) and the Behçet's Syndrome Activity Scale (BSAS). Two radiologists blinded to the diagnosis of BD used ultrasound to measure VWT and CIMT. Receiver operating characteristics were assessed to obtain sensitivity and specificity values for each VWT and CIMT. RESULTS: The groups were similar in terms of age, sex, and body mass index (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between the BD groups when the BDCAF and BSAS scores were compared, while there was no difference between them in terms of disease duration and medical treatment (p>0.05). All VWTs and CIMTs were significantly higher in patients with BD compared to healthy controls (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the BD groups in terms of CIMT, jugular and common femoral VWTs (p>0.05). But portal VWT was significantly higher in patients with vascular involvement (p<0.05). A cut-off value of ≥1.35 mm yielded a sensitivity of 79.2% and a specificity of 82.4% for the diagnosis of vascular involvement with the highest Youden's index (area under the curve, 0.869; 95% confidence interval, 0.783 to 0.956). CONCLUSION: Portal VWT has high sensitivity and specificity for the screening of vascular involvement in patients with BD.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been offered as a possible indicator of intracranial pressure (ICP). Increased ICP is observed during intracranial injury. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between increased ONSD and positive intracranial findings from multislice computed tomography (CT) of the brain. METHODS: In total, CT scans of 161 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The image that showed the largest ONSD was magnified five times. RESULTS: The CT scan revealed intracranial lesions in 54 patients and no intracranial lesions in 107 patients. A significant relationship was observed between positive CT findings and increased ONSD: 5.60±0.75 mm vs. 5.35±0.75 mm (p=0.038). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.600 (95% confidence interval, 0.508-0.692; p<0.039). A cut-off value of ≥5.0 mm had a sensitivity and specificity of 80% and 36%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a significant yet poor relationship between intracranial injury and increased ONSD from the multislice CT scan. Severe structural changes in the brain and trauma that causes bleeding have only limited effects on the extension of the optic nerve.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the possible effects of low (3 mg/kg) and high (6 mg/kg) doses of nicotine on the skeletal development of rat fetuses by the double staining method and the protective role of melatonin (10 mg/kg) against these effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen adult female Wistar-Albino rats were divided into six groups (n=3, each) as control, low-dose nicotine, high-dose nicotine, low-dose nicotine+melatonin, high-dose nicotine + melatonin and melatonin. While nicotine was given to the experimental groups on gestation days 1-20, nicotine and melatonin were administered together to the treatment groups. The fetuses were delivered by cesarean section on the 20th day of pregnancy. The skeletal systems of the fetuses were stained using the double staining method. The forelimbs and hindlimbs of the fetuses were firstly investigated under a stereomicroscope, and then their photos were taken. The total bone length, the length of the ossified part and the ossification rate were calculated using the ImageJ program. RESULTS: The degree of ossification in the bones of the feet and the hands was determined. When the total bone length and the length of the ossified part were evaluated, they were significantly decreased in the nicotine groups (P<0.05), but were close to each other in the treatment and the control groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: It has been found that the use of nicotine during pregnancy delays skeletal ossification and that melatonin, a powerful antioxidant, eliminates the teratogenic effects of nicotine.

Two-dimensional materials show considerable promise as high surface area electrodes for energy-storage applications such as supercapacitors. A single sheet of graphene possesses a large specific surface area because of its atomically thin thickness. However, to package this area efficiently in a device, it must be confined within a finite three-dimensional volume without restacking of the sheet faces. Herein, we present a method of maintaining the high surface area through the use of a hybrid thin film in which few-layer-exfoliated black phosphorus (BP) reduces graphene oxide (GO) flakes. When the film is exposed to moisture, a redox reaction between the BP and the GO forms an interpenetrating network of reduced GO (RGO) and a liquid electrolyte of intermediate phosphorus acids H xPO y. The presence of the liquid H xPO y electrolyte in the RGO/H xPO y film stabilizes and preserves an open-channel structure enabling rapid ion diffusion, leading to an excellent charging rate capability (up to 500 mV s-1 and retaining 62.3% of initial capacitance at a large current density of 50 A g-1) when used as electrodes in supercapacitors.
