Flexible solar cells have a lot of market potential for application in photovoltaics integrated into buildings and wearable electronics because they are lightweight, shockproof and self-powered. Silicon solar cells have been successfully used in large power plants. However, despite the efforts made for more than 50 years, there has been no notable progress in the development of flexible silicon solar cells because of their rigidity1-4. Here we provide a strategy for fabricating large-scale, foldable silicon wafers and manufacturing flexible solar cells. A textured crystalline silicon wafer always starts to crack at the sharp channels between surface pyramids in the marginal region of the wafer. This fact enabled us to improve the flexibility of silicon wafers by blunting the pyramidal structure in the marginal regions. This edge-blunting technique enables commercial production of large-scale (>240 cm2), high-efficiency (>24%) silicon solar cells that can be rolled similarly to a sheet of paper. The cells retain 100% of their power conversion efficiency after 1,000 side-to-side bending cycles. After being assembled into large (>10,000 cm2) flexible modules, these cells retain 99.62% of their power after thermal cycling between -70 °C and 85 °C for 120 h. Furthermore, they retain 96.03% of their power after 20 min of exposure to air flow when attached to a soft gasbag, which models wind blowing during a violent storm.

The impact of tau pathology on sleep microarchitecture features, including slow oscillations, spindles, and their coupling, has been understudied, despite the proposed importance of these electrophysiological features toward learning and memory. Dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) are known to promote sleep, but whether and how they affect sleep microarchitecture in the setting of tauopathy is unknown. In the PS19 mouse model of tauopathy MAPT (microtubule-associated protein tau) P301S (both male and female), young PS19 mice 2-3 months old show a sleep electrophysiology signature with markedly reduced spindle duration and power and elevated slow oscillation (SO) density compared with littermate controls, although there is no significant tau hyperphosphorylation, tangle formation, or neurodegeneration at this age. With aging, there is evidence for sleep disruption in PS19 mice, characterized by reduced REM duration, increased non-REM and REM fragmentation, and more frequent brief arousals at the macrolevel and reduced spindle density, SO density, and spindle-SO coupling at the microlevel. In ∼33% of aged PS19 mice, we unexpectedly observed abnormal goal-directed behaviors in REM, including mastication, paw grasp, and forelimb/hindlimb extension, seemingly consistent with REM behavior disorder (RBD). Oral administration of DORA-12 in aged PS19 mice increased non-REM and REM duration, albeit with shorter bout lengths, and increased spindle density, spindle duration, and SO density without change to spindle-SO coupling, power in either the SO or spindle bands, or the arousal index. We observed a significant effect of DORA-12 on objective measures of RBD, thereby encouraging future exploration of DORA effects on sleep-mediated cognition and RBD treatment.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The specific effect of tauopathy on sleep macroarchitecture and microarchitecture throughout aging remains unknown. Our key findings include the following: (1) the identification of a sleep EEG signature constituting an early biomarker of impending tauopathy; (2) sleep physiology deteriorates with aging that are also markers of off-line cognitive processing; (3) the novel observation that dream enactment behaviors reminiscent of RBD occur, likely the first such observation in a tauopathy model; and (4) a dual orexin receptor antagonist is capable of restoring several of the sleep macroarchitecture and microarchitecture abnormalities.

We previously showed that the transaminase inhibitor, aminooxyacetic acid, reduced respiration energized at complex II (succinate dehydrogenase, SDH) in mitochondria isolated from mouse hindlimb muscle. The effect required a reduction in membrane potential with resultant accumulation of oxaloacetate (OAA), a potent inhibitor of SDH. To specifically assess the effect of the mitochondrial transaminase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT2) on complex II respiration, and to determine the effect in intact cells as well as isolated mitochondria, we performed respiratory and metabolic studies in wildtype (WT) and CRISPR-generated GOT2 knockdown (KD) C2C12 myocytes. Intact cell respiration by GOT2KD cells versus WT was reduced by adding carbonyl cyanide-p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone (FCCP) to lower potential. In mitochondria of C2C12 KD cells, respiration at low potential generated by 1 µM FCCP and energized at complex II by 10 mM succinate + 0.5 mM glutamate (but not by complex I substrates) was reduced versus WT mitochondria. Although we could not detect OAA, metabolite data suggested that OAA inhibition of SDH may have contributed to the FCCP effect. C2C12 mitochondria differed from skeletal muscle mitochondria in that the effect of FCCP on complex II respiration was not evident with ADP addition. We also observed that C2C12 cells, unlike skeletal muscle, expressed glutamate dehydrogenase, which competes with GOT2 for glutamate metabolism. In summary, GOT2 KD reduced C2C12 respiration in intact cells at low potential. From differential substrate effects, this occurred largely at complex II. Moreover, C2C12 versus muscle mitochondria differ in complex II sensitivity to ADP and differ markedly in expression of glutamate dehydrogenase.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Impairment of the mitochondrial transaminase, GOT2, reduces complex II (succinate dehydrogenase, SDH)-energized respiration in C2C12 myocytes. This occurs only at low inner membrane potential and is consistent with inhibition of SDH. Incidentally, we observed that C2C12 mitochondria compared with muscle tissue mitochondria differ in sensitivity of complex II respiration to ADP and in the expression of glutamate dehydrogenase.

The protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), a serine/threonine phosphatase, is recognized as a tumor suppressor involved in diverse cellular processes and essential for maintaining cell viability in vivo. However, endogenous inhibitors of PP2A such as cancerous inhibitor of PP2A (CIP2A) and endogenous nuclear protein inhibitor 2 of PP2A (SET) counteract the anticancer function of PP2A, promoting tumorigenesis, development, and drug resistance in tumors. Surprisingly though, contrary to conventional understanding, inhibition of the tumor suppressor gene PP2A with exogenous small molecule compounds can enhance the efficacy of cancer treatment and achieve superior tumor inhibition. Moreover, exogenous PP2A inhibitors resensitize cancers to treatment and provide novel therapeutic strategies for drug-resistant tumors, which warrant further investigation.

The practically unlimited high-dimensional composition space of high-entropy materials (HEMs) has emerged as an exciting platform for functional material design and discovery. However, the identification of stable and synthesizable HEMs and robust design rules remains a daunting challenge. Here, we propose a mixed enthalpy-entropy descriptor (MEED) that enables highly efficient, robust, high-throughput prediction of synthesizable HEMs across vast chemical spaces from first-principles. The MEED is based on two parameters: the relative formation enthalpy with respect to the most stable competing compound and the spread of the point-defect formation energy spectrum. The former measures the relative synthesizability of an HEM to its most stable competing phase, going beyond the conventional thermodynamic understanding. The latter gauges the relative entropy forming ability of an HEM, entailing no sampling over numerous alloy configurations. By applying the MEED to two structurally distinct representative material systems (i.e., 3D rocksalt carbides and 2D layered sulfides), we not only successfully identify all experimentally reported HEMs within these systems but also reveal a cutoff criterion for assessing their relative synthesizability within each system. By the MEED, tens of new high-entropy carbides and 2D high-entropy sulfides are also predicted, which have the potential for a wide variety of applications such as coating in aerospace devices, energy conversion and storage, and flexible electronics.

Monochromatic light-illuminated active-imaging stereo-digital image correlation (stereo-DIC) has been extensively used for measuring the surface deformation of materials and structures at elevated temperatures. Despite the improvements in the image acquisition techniques or devices, it is still challenging to measure the 3D deformation of materials and structures in the presence of strong, time-varying ambient light and thermal radiation. In this study, we present what we believe to be a novel dual-filtering single-camera stereo-DIC technique for full-field 3D high-temperature deformation measurement, even in the case of extremely intense ambient light and thermal radiation. In contrast to conventional active-imaging stereo-DIC that only suppresses the thermal radiations in the spectral domain, the proposed technique utilized a dual-filtering strategy (i.e., narrow bandpass optical filtering and ultrashort exposing) to suppress the strong ambient light and thermal radiation in both time and spectral domains. Besides, a four-mirror adapter is adopted to realize 3D shape and deformation measurement using a compact single time-gated camera. Experimental verifications, including assessments with laboratory experiments and validations on real thermal deformation tests under transient aerodynamic heating and direct ohmic heating, convincingly demonstrated that the proposed single-camera dual-filtering stereo-DIC method can achieve accurate 3D shape, motion and deformation measurement, even with strong light and thermal radiation from the quartz lamps and the heated sample.

AIMS: Determining diabetes type in children has become increasingly difficult due to an overlap in typical characteristics between type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The Diabetes Study in Children of Diverse Ethnicity and Race (DISCOVER) programme is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported multicenter, prospective, observational study that enrols children and adolescents with non-secondary diabetes. The primary aim of the study was to develop improved models to differentiate between T1D and T2D in diverse youth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed models will evaluate the utility of three existing T1D genetic risk scores in combination with data on islet autoantibodies and other parameters typically available at the time of diabetes onset. Low non-fasting serum C-peptide (<0.6 nmol/L) between 3 and 10 years after diabetes diagnosis will be considered a biomarker for T1D as it reflects the loss of insulin secretion ability. Participating centres are enrolling youth (<19 years old) either with established diabetes (duration 3-10 years) for a cross-sectional evaluation or with recent onset diabetes (duration 3 weeks-15 months) for the longitudinal observation with annual visits for 3 years. Cross-sectional data will be used to develop models. Longitudinal data will be used to externally validate the best-fitting model. RESULTS: The results are expected to improve the ability to classify diabetes type in a large and growing subset of children who have an unclear form of diabetes at diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Accurate and timely classification of diabetes type will help establish the correct clinical management early in the course of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer, a major global health concern, disproportionately impacts low socioeconomic status (SES) patients, who face suboptimal care and reduced survival. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic performance of traditional Cox proportional hazards (CoxPH) regression and machine learning models, specifically Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), in patients with advanced lung cancer with low SES. DESIGN: A retrospective study. METHOD: The 949 patients with advanced lung cancer with low SES who entered the hospice ward of a tertiary hospital in Wuhan, China, from January 2012 to December 2021 were randomized into training and testing groups in a 3:1 ratio. CoxPH regression methods and four machine learning algorithms (DT, RF, SVM, and XGBoost) were used to construct prognostic risk prediction models. RESULTS: The CoxPH regression-based nomogram demonstrated reliable predictive accuracy for survival at 60, 90, and 120 days. Among the machine learning models, XGBoost showed the best performance, whereas RF had the lowest accuracy at 60 days, DT at 90 days, and SVM at 120 days. Key predictors across all models included Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score, quality of life (QOL) score, and cough symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: CoxPH, DT, RF, SVM, and XGBoost models are effective in predicting mortality risk over 60-120 days in patients with advanced lung cancer with low SES. Monitoring KPS, QOL, and cough symptoms is crucial for identifying high-risk patients who may require intensified care. Clinicians should select models tailored to individual patient needs and preferences due to varying prediction accuracies. AIM: We aimed to investigate the long-term influence of a diet and/or exercise intervention on long-term mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. METHODS: The Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Study had 576 participants with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) randomized to diet-only, exercise-only and diet-plus-exercise intervention group and control group. The participants underwent lifestyle interventions for 6 years. The subsequent Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Outcome Study was a prospective cohort study to follow-up the participants for up to 24 years after the end of 6-year intervention. In total, 540 participants completed the follow-up, while 36 subjects lost in follow-up. Cox proportional hazards analysis was applied to assess the influence of lifestyle interventions on targeted outcomes. RESULTS: Compared with controls, the diet-only intervention in people with IGT was significantly associated with a reduced risk of all-cause death [hazard ratio (HR) 0.77, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.61-0.97)], CVD death [HR 0.67, 95% CI (0.46-0.97)] and CVD events [HR 0.72, 95% CI (0.54-0.96)]. The diet-plus-exercise intervention was significantly associated with a decreased risk of all-cause death [HR 0.64, 95% CI (0.48-0.84)], CVD death [HR 0.54, 95% CI (0.30-0.97)] and CVD events [HR 0.68, 95% CI (0.52-0.90)]. Unexpectedly, the exercise-only intervention was not significantly associated with the reduction of any of these outcomes, although there was a consistent trend towards reduction. CONCLUSIONS: A diet-only intervention and a diet-plus-exercise intervention in people with IGT were significantly associated with a reduced risk of all-cause death, CVD death and CVD events, while an exercise-only intervention was not. It suggests that diet-related interventions may have a potentially more reliable influence on long-term vascular complications and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing interest in hospital rehabilitation services for communities, studies on existing community-based rehabilitation (CBR) services remain scarce owing to limitations in the development of community health services and regional cultural diversity. As a guaranteed measure for ensuring the quality of rehabilitation services and achieving the desired service outcomes, clear roles and responsibilities in multidisciplinary teams and effective service delivery are particularly important. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to determine the scope of community stroke rehabilitation programs involving existing multidisciplinary teams and to analyze the implementation content and implementers' functional roles to provide guidance for future CBR programs. METHODS: The scoping review design followed the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute and was based on the normative scoping review framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. The comprehensive CBR framework was proposed by World Health Organization-guided data charting and analysis. RESULTS: Of the 22,849 identified citations, 74 studies were included, consisting of 6,809 patients with stroke and 49 primary caregivers, most of whom were from China. The most common working mode in CBR programs was a dual approach involving both healthcare professionals in medical institutions and community healthcare professionals. The number of programs in each discipline was in the following descending order: nursing, medical care, rehabilitation, psychology, nutrition, and public health. Among these, multidisciplinary teams comprising medical, nursing, and rehabilitation disciplines were the most common, with a total of 29 programs. Disciplinary members were mainly responsible for implementing their respective disciplinary content, with physicians providing guidance for the programs. More than 82.4% of the studies reported 2-4 intervention strategies. The intervention forms of rehabilitation content were the most diverse, whereas preventive interventions were more homogeneous than others. Physical function and socio-psychological measurements were the most commonly reported outcomes. CONCLUSION: CBR services implemented by multidisciplinary teams can effectively achieve functional and emotional improvement in patients with stroke, and nurses are the most involved in implementation, especially in community settings. The results further emphasize the importance of strengthening the exploration of nurses' maximum potential to implement CBR plans in future practice. Multisensory integration is a fundamental function of the brain. In the typical adult, multisensory neurons' response to paired multisensory (e.g., audiovisual) cues is significantly more robust than the corresponding best unisensory response in many brain regions. Synthesizing sensory signals from multiple modalities can speed up sensory processing and improve the salience of outside events or objects. Despite its significance, multisensory integration is testified to be not a neonatal feature of the brain. Neurons' ability to effectively combine multisensory information does not occur rapidly but develops gradually during early postnatal life (for cats, 4-12 weeks required). Multisensory experience is critical for this developing process. If animals were restricted from sensing normal visual scenes or sounds (deprived of the relevant multisensory experience), the development of the corresponding integrative ability could be blocked until the appropriate multisensory experience is obtained. This section summarizes the extant literature on the development of multisensory integration (mainly using cat superior colliculus as a model), sensory-deprivation-induced cross-modal plasticity, and how sensory experience (sensory exposure and perceptual learning) leads to the plastic change and modification of neural circuits in cortical and subcortical areas.

T-cell responses to posttranslationally modified self-antigens are associated with many autoimmune disorders. In type 1 diabetes, hybrid insulin peptides (HIPs) are implicated in the T-cell-mediated destruction of insulin-producing ß-cells within pancreatic islets. The natural history of the disease is such that it allows for the study of T-cell reactivity prior to the onset of clinical symptoms. We hypothesized that CD4 T-cell responses to posttranslationally modified islet peptides precedes diabetes onset. In a cohort of genetically at-risk individuals, we measured longitudinal T-cell responses to native insulin and hybrid insulin peptides. Both proinflammatory (interferon-γ) and antiinflammatory (interluekin-10) cytokine responses to HIPs were more robust than those to native peptides, and the ratio of such responses oscillated between pro- and antiinflammatory over time. However, individuals who developed islet autoantibodies or progressed to clinical type 1 diabetes had predominantly inflammatory T-cell responses to HIPs. Additionally, several HIP T-cell responses correlated to worsening measurements of blood glucose, highlighting the relevance of T-cell responses to posttranslationally modified peptides prior to autoimmune disease development.

Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) is a cluster of behavioral problems that severely affect an individual's functioning. Currently, there is no consensus on the main clinical features of CDS, and further exploration in large samples is needed. Using a cluster-stratified random sampling method, 72,106 children and adolescents were recruited from five provinces in mainland China for this study. Using both the traditional two-factor scoring method and the CBCL DSM-oriented scales, we assessed individual behavioral problems from psychopathological and DSM-oriented perspectives. Network analysis was employed to explore the relationship between CDS and behavioral problems. The various networks were compared by gender and age subgroups. Among 72,106 participants (mean age, 11.49 years; minimum age, 5 years; maximum age, 16 years), there were 36,449 males (50.5%) and 35,657 females (49.5%). From a psychopathological perspective, the motor symptoms node was associated with the sad node and the withdrawn node, while the cognitive symptoms node was linked to the nervous node and the self-conscious node. In terms of gender, males had stronger associations of the motor symptoms node with the sad node and the withdrawn node than females (P = 0.043), and weaker associations of the cognitive symptoms node with the nervous node than females (P = 0.027). In terms of growth stage, the adolescent group had stronger associations of the cognitive symptoms node with the nervous node and the self-conscious node than the child group (P = 0.016, 0.001). From DSM perspective, motor symptoms node were associated with sad node, and cognitive symptoms node were related to can't concentrate node, nervous node, and worthless node. With increasing age, there was an upward trend in the strength of the cognitive and motor symptoms node. CDS is closely linked to psychological and behavioral issues, especially internalizing problems, with differences observed by gender and growth stage. The connection between CDS and the affective, anxiety, and ADH symptoms is particularly pronounced.

BACKGROUND: The quality of life of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer is seriously impaired, and socioeconomic deprivation often has a serious impact on their quality of life. However, little is known about the relative contribution of non-socioeconomic factors to the quality of life of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation. AIM: This study aims to investigate the situation and predictors of quality of life of patients with socioeconomic deprivation and evaluate the independent effects of some non-socioeconomic factors. DESIGN: A retrospective study based on cross-sectional design. METHODS: Data were obtained from 1075 patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer who received family palliative treatment in the hospice ward of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from March 2010 to October 2020, including demographic and clinical questionnaires, Karnofsky Performance Status scale and Cancer Pain and Quality of Life Questionnaire of Chinese Cancer Patients. RESULTS: The quality of life of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation is impaired and is affected by gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss, constipation and posture. Improvement in six of these factors-gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss and posture-has an independent positive impact on the development of a healthy quality of life for patients. CONCLUSIONS: Gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss and posture are important determinants of healthy quality of life in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation, and early identification and strength management of these non-socioeconomic factors may neutralize the negative impact of socioeconomic factors on the quality of life. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study provides new ideas and intervention entry points for global nurses in practice innovations to improve the quality of life of socioeconomically deprived patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer. It enables them to focus on the effectiveness of non-socioeconomic factors in the development and implementation of targeted care plans for patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer experiencing socioeconomic deprivation globally. REPORTING METHOD: This study was reported in strict compliance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guideline. Potato is an important food crop. After harvest, these tubers will undergo a period of dormancy. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a new class of plant hormones that regulate plant growth and seed germination. In this study, 500 nM of BR was able to break the dormancy of tubers. Additionally, exogenous BR also upregulated BR signal transduction genes, except for StBIN2. StBIN2 is a negative regulator of BR, but its specific role in tuber dormancy remains unclear. Transgenic methods were used to regulate the expression level of StBIN2 in tubers. It was demonstrated that the overexpression of StBIN2 significantly prolonged tuber dormancy while silencing StBIN2 led to premature sprouting. To further investigate the effect of StBIN2 on tuber dormancy, RNA-Seq was used to analyze the differentially expressed genes in OE-StBIN2, RNAi-StBIN2, and WT tubers. The results showed that StBIN2 upregulated the expression of ABA signal transduction genes but inhibited the expression of lignin synthesis key genes. Meanwhile, it was also found that StBIN2 physically interacted with StSnRK2.2 and StCCJ9. These results indicate that StBIN2 maintains tuber dormancy by mediating ABA signal transduction and lignin synthesis. The findings of this study will help us better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying potato tuber dormancy and provide theoretical support for the development of new varieties using related genes.

The Motor tic, Obsessions and Compulsions, Vocal tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES) is a widely used screening tool for Tourette syndrome (TS) and associated comorbidities. This study evaluated its applicability for children in China using 7,125 participants from the National Center for Children's Health (Beijing). Psychometric evaluations included exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, yielding a 16-item, four-factor model that explained 55.11% of the variance and demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.86). The scale showed strong convergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validity and was significantly correlated with other established TS scales. The results affirm the reliability and validity of the MOVES for screening TS in Asian contexts, addressing a crucial gap in the region's TS assessment tools.

BACKGROUND: Self-regulation is crucial for nurses who engage in in-depth end-of-life conversations with advanced cancer patients, especially in cultural contexts featuring death taboos. An improved understanding of the self-regulation process of nurses can help them address negative emotions and promote self-growth more effectively. Therefore, this study aimed to explore nurses' self-regulation process after end-of-life conversations with advanced cancer patients. METHODS: This study employed a descriptive, qualitative approach. Seventeen nurses from four hospitals and a hospice unit in mainland China were interviewed between September 2022 and June 2023. Data were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews. A thematic analysis method was used to analyse the data following the guidance of regulatory focus theory. RESULTS: Three main themes were developed: self-regulation antecedents include personality, experience, and support; promotion or prevention is a possible self-regulation process for nurses; both self-exhaustion and self-growth may be the outcomes of self-regulation, as did seven subthemes. Personality tendencies, life experience, and perceived support may affect nurses' self-regulation, thereby affecting their self-regulation outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses exhibit different self-regulatory tendencies and self-regulation outcomes. The provision of peer support and counselling support to nurses is highly important with regard to achieving good self-regulation outcomes.

An increasing number of studies have shown that cross-modal interaction can occur in early sensory cortices. Yet, how neurons in sensory cortices integrate multisensory cues in perceptual tasks and to what extent this influences behavior is largely unclear. To investigate, we examined visual modulation of auditory responses in the primary auditory cortex (A1) in a two-alternative forced-choice task. During the task, male rats were required to make a behavioral choice based on the pure tone frequency (low vs high) of the self-triggered stimulus to get a water reward. The result showed that the presence of a noninformative visual cue did not uniformly influence auditory response, with frequently enhancing just one of them. Closely correlated with behavioral choice, the visual cue mainly enhanced responsiveness to the auditory cue indicating a movement direction contralateral to A1 being recorded. Operating in this fashion provided A1 neurons a superior capability to discriminate sound during multisensory trials. Concomitantly, behavioral data and decoding analysis revealed that visual cue presence could speed the process of sound discrimination. We also observed this differential multisensory integration effect in well-trained rats when tested with passive stimulation and under anesthesia, albeit to a much lesser extent. We did not see this differentially integrative effect while recording in A1 in another similar group of rats performing a free-choice task. These data suggest that auditory cortex can engage in meaningful audiovisual processing, and perceptual learning can modify its multisensory integration mechanism to meet task requirements.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT In the natural environment, visual stimuli are frequently accompanied by auditory cues. Although multisensory integration has traditionally been seen as a feature of associational cortices, recent studies have shown that cross-modal inputs can also influence neuronal activity in primary sensory cortices. However, exactly how neurons in sensory cortices integrate multisensory cues to guide behavioral choice is still unclear. Here, we describe a novel model of multisensory integration used by A1 neurons to shape auditory representations when rats performed a cue-guided task. We found that a task-irrelevant visual cue could specifically enhance the response of neurons in sound guiding to the contralateral choice. This differentially integrative model facilitated sound discrimination and behavioral choice. This result indicates that task engagement can modulate multisensory integration.

We previously found that skeletal muscle mitochondria incubated at low membrane potential (ΔΨ) or interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) mitochondria, wherein ΔΨ is intrinsically low, accumulate oxaloacetate (OAA) in amounts sufficient to inhibit complex II respiration. We proposed a mechanism wherein low ΔΨ reduces reverse electron transport (RET) to complex I causing a low NADH/NAD+ ratio favoring malate conversion to OAA. To further assess the mechanism and its physiologic relevance, we carried out studies of mice with inherently different levels of IBAT mitochondrial inner membrane potential. Isolated complex II (succinate)-energized IBAT mitochondria from obesity-resistant 129SVE mice compared with obesity-prone C57BL/6J displayed greater UCP1 expression, similar O2 flux despite lower ΔΨ, similar OAA concentrations, and similar NADH/NAD+. When GDP was added to inhibit UCP1, 129SVE IBAT mitochondria, despite their lower ΔΨ, exhibited much lower respiration, twofold greater OAA concentrations, much lower RET (as marked by ROS), and much lower NADH and NADH/NAD+ ratios compared with the C57BL/6J IBAT mitochondria. UCP1 knock-out abolished OAA accumulation by succinate-energized mitochondria associated with markedly greater ΔΨ, ROS, and NADH, but equal or greater O2 flux compared with WT mitochondria. GDP addition, compared with no GDP, increased ΔΨ and complex II respiration in wild-type (WT) mice associated with much less OAA. Respiration on complex I substrates followed the more classical dynamics of greater respiration at lower ΔΨ. These findings support the abovementioned mechanism for OAA- and ΔΨ-dependent complex II respiration and support its physiological relevance.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We examined mitochondrial respiration initiated at mitochondrial complex II in mice with varying degrees of brown adipose tissue UCP1 expression. We show that, by affecting inner membrane potential, UCP1 expression determines reverse electron transport from complex II to complex I and, consequently, the NADH/NAD+ ratio. Accordingly, this regulates the level of oxaloacetate accumulation and the extent of oxaloacetate inhibition of complex II.

INTRODUCTION: Recent reports suggest severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections may increase the risk of celiac disease autoimmunity. This study aims to evaluate potential associations between coronavirus disease 2019 infection and tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies (TGA) immunoglobulin A. METHODS: From 2020 to 2021, cross-sectional screening for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and TGA was offered to 4,717 children in Colorado through the Autoimmunity Screening for Kids study. Multivariable logistic regression assessed association between previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and TGA positivity. RESULTS: Previous SARS-CoV-2 infection was not associated with TGA positivity (odds ratio 1.02, 95% confidence interval 0.63-1.59; P = 0.95). DISCUSSION: In this large-scale analysis, previous SARS-CoV-2 infection was not associated with celiac disease autoimmunity in Colorado children.
