BACKGROUND: The delineation of intraprostatic lesions is vital for correct delivery of focal radiotherapy boost in patients with prostate cancer (PC). Errors in the delineation could translate into reduced tumour control and potentially increase the side effects. The purpose of this study is to compare PET-based delineation methods with histopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 15 patients with confirmed high-risk PC intended for prostatectomy. [68Ga]-PSMA-PET/MR was performed prior to surgery. Prostate lesions identified in histopathology were transferred to the in vivo [68Ga]-PSMA-PET/MR coordinate system. Four radiation oncologists manually delineated intraprostatic lesions based on PET data. Various semi-automatic segmentation methods were employed, including absolute and relative thresholds, adaptive threshold, and multi-level Otsu threshold. RESULTS: The gross tumour volumes (GTVs) delineated by the oncologists showed a moderate level of interobserver agreement with Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.68. In comparison with histopathology, manual delineations exhibited the highest median DSC and the lowest false discovery rate (FDR) among all approaches. Among semi-automatic approaches, GTVs generated using standardized uptake value (SUV) thresholds above 4 (SUV > 4) demonstrated the highest median DSC (0.41), with 0.51 median lesion coverage ratio, FDR of 0.66 and the 95th percentile of the Hausdorff distance (HD95%) of 8.22 mm. INTERPRETATION: Manual delineations showed a moderate level of interobserver agreement. Compared to histopathology, manual delineations and SUV > 4 exhibited the highest DSC and the lowest HD95% values. The methods that resulted in a high lesion coverage were associated with a large overestimation of the size of the lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have been conducted on the relationship between breakfast consumption and mental health with conflicting results. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis was undertaken to summarize evidences on the association between skipping breakfast and mental health. METHODS: We searched online databases for all related papers through the comprehensive international data bases of Institute of PubMed/ MEDLINE, ISI/WOS and Scopus up to December 2019, using relevant keywords. Overall, 14 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. RESULTS: The total sample size of all selected studies was 399,550 individuals with age range of 6 to ≥65 years old. We found a significant positive association between skipping breakfast and Odds Ratio (OR) of depression (pooled OR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.34-1.44), stress (pooled OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.04-1.43) and psychological distress (pooled OR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.47-1.62). In contrast, there was no significant association between skipping breakfast and anxiety in all age cohort (pooled OR: 1.31; 95% CI: 0.97-1.65). However, subgroup analysis based on age stratification showed that there was a significant positive association between skipping breakfast and anxiety in adolescences (pooled OR: 1.51; 95% CI: 1.25-1.77). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, skipping breakfast was positively associated with odds of depression, stress and psychological distress in all age groups and anxiety in adolescence, underlining impact of breakfast on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Continuing medical education is essential for nurses to provide quality patient care and upgrade their professional skills and competence. The need for continuing medical education (CME) has become more apparent in the face of advances in medical science, the ever-changing healthcare system, and nurses' vital role in improving health care. It is, therefore, imperative to explore the nurses' experience of CME courses and the extent to which such programs are effective. OBJECTIVE: The present qualitative study aimed to explore and describe nurses' experiences of the effect of CE programs in promoting their competencies toward non-communicable diseases. METHODS: This qualitative content analysis study was conducted from December 2019 to April 2020 at various hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (Shiraz, Iran) and based on the principles of conventional content analysis. The target population was nurses who actively worked in the chronic wards of these hospitals. The participants were selected using maximum variation sampling, including nine nursing managers, education and clinical supervisors, and staff nurses. Data were collected through individual, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews guided by an interview guide, and data collection continued until data saturation was achieved. Each interview took about 30-45 min. Follow up questions were used for clarification when needed. Data trustworthiness was assessed according to the criteria proposed by Guba and Lincoln. RESULTS: Analysis of the interview data resulted in 230 primary codes, based on 8 categories, and three themes were identified. The extracted themes were gaps in the planning of the CME program, problematic context, and training to improve professional skills and competency. The associated categories were gaps in the planning of the CME program, problematic context, and training to improve professional skills and competency. CONCLUSION: Professional competence and performance of nurses can be improved through intrinsic motivation stimulation, planning, and implementation of training programs based on professional needs and effective assessment of the teaching/learning process.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate a national vitamin D supplementation program's cost-effectiveness among Iranian adolescents to prevent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in adulthood. STUDY DESIGN: A cost-effectiveness analytical study. METHODS: A decision tree model was adopted to evaluate the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) of monthly intake of nine pearls of 50,000 IU vitamin D for nine months to prevent CVD a one-year horizon compared to no intervention. The analysis was conducted in Iranian adolescents in first or second high school grades of 47 climatically different Iran regions. RESULTS: Our analytical analysis estimated the 1090$ cost per QALY gained of the monthly intake of 50,000 IU vitamin D for nine months among adolescents over a one-year horizon. Based on the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) threshold of 1032-2666, vitamin D supplementation was cost-effective for adolescents to prevent adulthood CVD. It means that vitamin D supplementation costs were substantially less than the costs of CVD treatments compared to the no intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings, the national program of vitamin D supplementation in adolescents would be cost effective to prevent CVD development in adulthood. From an economic perspective, vitamin D supplementation, especially in adolescents with vitamin D deficiency, would be administrated.

RESUMEN

Gold Nanostars (GNS) have attracted tremendous attention toward themselves owing to their multi-branched structure and unique properties. These state of the art metallic nanoparticles possess intrinsic features like remarkable optical properties and exceptional physiochemical activities. These star-shaped gold nanoparticles can predominantly be utilized in biosensing, photothermal therapy, imaging, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and target drug delivery applications due to their low toxicity and extraordinary optical features. In the current review, recent approaches in the matter of GNS in case of diagnosis, bioimaging and biomedical applications were summarized and reported. In this regard, first an overview about the structure and general properties of GNS were reported and thence detailed information regarding the diagnostic, bioimaging, photothermal therapy, and drug delivery applications of such novel nanomaterials were presented in detail. Summarized information clearly highlighting the superior capability of GNS as potential multi-functional materials for biomedical applications.

Selenium is an essential mineral that plays a key role in plenty of major metabolic processes. A growing body of literature has shown that selenium deficiency leads to an increase in plasma TC and TG levels. This study explores the effect of selenium supplementation on serum level of lipid profile [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL)]. We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI/WOS, and Scopus (from their commencements to Jan 2016) to identify the papers investigating the association between the intake of selenium and lipid profile. Data extracted from the relevant studies were screened. The pooled standardized mean difference was estimated using the random or fixed effects model. Heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using Q-test. Of the potentially relevant articles screened, 11 articles including 1221 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Results of meta-analysis showed that intake of selenium resulted in a statistically significant improvement in TC, [(SMD): -0.13, 95% CI: (-0.24, -0.02)], TG [(SMD): -0.19, 95% CI: (-0.38, -0.01)] and VLDL [(SMD): -0.34, 95% CI: (-0.63, -0.05)]. The selenium supplementation did not significantly improve lipid profile such as LDL [(SMD): -0.08, 95% CI: (-0.036, 0.19)], HDL [(SMD): 0.01, 95% CI: (-0.164, 0.18)], HDL/TC ratio [(SMD): 0.025, 95% CI: (-0.11, 0.16)], non-HDL-C [(SMD): 0.018, 95% CI: (-0.13, 0.16)]. This meta-analysis suggests that the effect of selenium supplementation on the serum levels of TG and VLDL is marginally significant. However, the supplementation has no effect on other serum lipids. Moreover, the study shows that the effect of selenium supplementation on lipid profile is negative.

BACKGROUND: Should early response imaging predict tumor response to therapy, personalized treatment adaptations could be feasible to improve outcome or reduce the risk of adverse events. This prospective single-center observational study on 2-fluorine-18-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (2-[18F]FDG) positron-emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) features aims to investigate the association between semantic 2-[18F]FDG-PET/MRI imaging parameters and outcome prediction in uterine cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) treated with radiotherapy. RESULTS: Eleven study participants with previously untreated CSCC were examined with 2-[18F]FDG-PET/MRI at baseline and approximately one week after start of curative radiotherapy. All study participants had at least 24 months clinical follow-up. Two patients relapsed during the follow-up period. Reduced tumor size according to visual assessment was present in 9/11 participants (median change in sum of largest diameters (SLD) - 10.4%; range - 2.5 to - 24.6%). The size reduction was less pronounced in the relapse group compared to the no relapse group, with median change in SLD - 4.9%, versus - 10.4%. None of the reductions qualified as significantly reduced or increased in size according to RECIST 1.1., hence all participants were at this stage classified as non-responders/stable disease. Median baseline functional tumor volume (FTV) for the relapse group was 126 cm3, while for the no relapse group 9.3 cm3. Median delta FTV in the relapse group was 50.7 cm3, representing an actual increase in metabolically active volume, while median delta FTV in the no relapse group was - 2.0 cm3. Median delta apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) was lower in the relapse group versus the no relapse group (- 3.5 mm2/s vs. 71 mm2/s). CONCLUSIONS: Early response assessment with 2-[18F]FDG-PET/MRI identified potentially predictive functional imaging biomarkers for prediction of radiotherapy outcome in CSCC, that could not be recognized with tumor measurements according to RECIST 1.1. These biomarkers (delta FTV and delta ADC) should be further evaluated. Trial registration Clinical Trials, NCT02379039. Registered 4 March 2015-Retrospectively registered, https://classic. BACKGROUND: There is a definite shift in assisted reproductive centres from cleavage-stage embryo transfer (ET) to blastocyst transfer that is attributed to improvements in laboratory environments and advances in the development of embryo culture media. The aim of the study was to investigate the reproductive outcomes of thawed cleavage-stage ET versus blastocysts derived from an extended culture of these embryos. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This open-label, randomised, parallel group clinical trial study enrolled 182 women aged ≤37 years who underwent frozen-thawed ET from November 2015 to June 2020 at Royan Institute Research Centre, Tehran, Iran. The women were randomly assigned to either the thawed cleavage ET group (n=110) or the post-thaw extended culture blastocysts group (n=72). The primary outcome measure was the clinical pregnancy rate. Secondary outcome measures were implantation rate, live birth rate (LBR), and miscarriage rate. A P<0.05 indicated statistical significance. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of demographic characteristics. Both the mean numbers of embryos transferred and good quality embryos transferred were significantly lower in the postthaw extended culture blastocysts group compared to thawed cleavage-stage ET cycles. However, the post-thaw extended culture blastocysts group had higher clinical pregnancy (56.94 vs. 40.91%, P=0.034), implantation (34.43 vs. 19.84%, P=0.001) and live birth (49.3 vs. 33.63%, P=0.036) rates compared to the thawed cleavage-stage ET group. Miscarriage and multiple gestations rates were comparable between the groups. CONCLUSION: These results allow us to take a position in favour of post-thaw extended culture blastocysts; thus, it is important to improve the post-thawing extended culture technique (registration number: NCT02681029).

PURPOSE: Safety in Radiation Oncology (SAFRON) is a reporting and learning system on radiotherapy and radionuclide therapy incidents and near misses. The primary aim of this paper is to examine whether any discernible patterns exist in the causes of reported incidents and safety barriers within the SAFRON system concerning external beam radiotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study focuses on external beam radiotherapy incidents, reviewing 1685 reports since the inception of SAFRON until December 2021. Reports that did not identify causes of incidents and safety barriers were excluded from the final study population. RESULTS: Simple two-dimensional radiotherapy or electron beam therapy were represented by 97 reports, three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy by 39 reports, modulated arc therapy by 12 reports, intensity modulated radiation therapy by 11 reports, stereotactic radiosurgery by 4 reports, and radiotherapy with protons or other particles by 1 report, while for 92 of them, no information on treatment method had been provided. Most of the reported incidents were minor incidents and were discovered by the radiation therapist. Inadequate direction/information in staff communication was the most frequently reported cause of incident, and regular independent chart check was the most common safety barrier. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the majority of incidents were reported by radiation therapists, and the majority of these incidents were classified as minor. Communication problems and failure to follow standards/procedures/practices were the most frequent causes of incidents. Furthermore, regular independent chart checking was the most frequently identified safety barrier.

We examined the effects of DNA methyltransferase inhibitor - RG108, and histone deacetylase inhibitor - SAHA, on the reprogramming parameters of cloned mouse embryos produced by somatic cell nuclear transfer into oocytes. The programming parameters studied included dynamics of histone reacetylation, developmental rate, DNA methylation, and transcript levels of genes, all of which are pivotal to lineage specification and blastocyst formation. At the pronuclear stage, somatic nucleus-transplanted oocytes treated with 5 µM SAHA presented higher histone acetylation at H3K9, H3K14, H4K16 and H4K12, compared to untreated clones (p < 0.05). At the morula stage, cloned embryos treated with 5 µM RG108 or 5 µM SAHA presented lower DNA methylation intensity compared to untreated clones (p < 0.05), resembling the intensity levels of fertilized embryos. However, these effects were not observed when RG108 and SAHA were used in combination. The rate of morula formation was significantly higher in cloned embryos treated with 5 µM SAHA than in untreated clones, whereas treatment with RG108 resulted in no obvious effects on morula formation rates. On the other hand, the combined treatment with RG108 and SAHA resulted in inferior rates of cloned morula formation, compared to untreated clones. At the blastocyst stage, the aberrant expression levels of key developmental genes Oct4 and Cdx2, but not Nanog, were corrected in cloned embryos by the treatment with RG108. This is similar to the intensity levels seen in fertilized embryos. The expression of Rpl7l1 gene was significantly higher in embryos treated with both RG108 and SAHA than in untreated and in control groups. In summary, the present study showed that SAHA and RG108, when applied separately, improve the rate and quality of cloned mouse embryos.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in preventing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Iranian adolescents. METHODS: This analytical observational study was conducted, using the decision tree model constructed in TreeAge Pro to assess the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) of monthly intake vitamin D supplements to prevent T2DM compared to no intervention from the viewpoint of Iran's Ministry of Health and through an one-year horizon. In the national program of vitamin D supplementation, 1,185,211 Iranian high-school students received 50,000 IU vitamin D supplements monthly for nine months. The costs-related data were modified to 2018. The average cost and effectiveness were compared based on the Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER). RESULTS: Our analytical analysis estimated the 4071.25 (USD / QALY) cost per AQALY gained of the monthly intake of 50,000 IU vitamin D for nine months among adolescents over a one-year horizon. Based on the ICER threshold of 1032-2666, vitamin D supplementation was cost-effective for adolescents to prevent adulthood T2DM. It means that vitamin D supplementation costs were substantially less than the costs of T2DM treatments than the no intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings, the national vitamin D supplementation program for Iranian adolescents could be a cost-effective strategy to reduce the risk of diabetes in adulthood. From an economic perspective, vitamin D supplementation, especially in adolescents with vitamin D deficiency, would be administrated.

BACKGROUND: There has been a longstanding interest in the potential effect of vitamin D in preventing cardiac-metabolic diseases. However, there are divergent results regarding the impact of vitamin D supplementation (VDS) on managing cardiac-metabolic outcomes in the elderly population. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We systematically searched electronic databases; Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane, and ProQuest. We included all trials that evaluated the effect of VDS on cardiac-metabolic risk factors in the elderly population, which were published until 30 September 2021. The effects of VDS on cardiac-metabolic outcomes were assessed using standardized mean difference (SMD). A random-effect model was used to pool the SMD and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULT: The literature search identified 4409 studies, of which 12 trials met inclusion criteria. Results of random effect meta-analysis indicated a significant reduction in total cholesterol (TC) (SMD: - 0.14 mg/dl; 95% CI: - 0.25, - 0.02) and triglyceride (TG) (SMD: - 0.45 mg/dl; 95% CI: - 0.86, - 0.04) with VDS compared to the placebo. The subgroup analyses revealed that the reduction of TG in patients with diabetes and vitamin D deficiency was significant. Furthermore, short-term intervention (≤ 6 months) induced a significantly lower level of TG and insulin in comparison to longer duration (> 6 months). CONCLUSION: The study suggests that VDS could improve insulin concentration and dyslipidemia in the elderly population. The systematic review was registered in Alborz university of medical sciences with 2060-01-03-1397 number and the Ethics council IR.ABZUMS.REC.1397.207 number.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of deaths globally. The early diagnosis of MI lowers the rate of subsequent complications and maximizes the benefits of cardiovascular interventions. Many efforts have been made to explore new therapeutic targets for MI, and the therapeutic potential of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) is one good example. NcRNAs are a group of RNAs with many different subgroups, but they are not translated into proteins. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are the most studied type of ncRNAs, and have been found to regulate several pathological processes in MI, including cardiomyocyte inflammation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and fibrosis. These processes can also be modulated by circular RNAs and long ncRNAs via different mechanisms. However, the regulatory role of ncRNAs and their underlying mechanisms in MI are underexplored. Exosomes play a crucial role in communication between cells, and can affect both homeostasis and disease conditions. Exosomal ncRNAs have been shown to affect many biological functions. Tissue-specific changes in exosomal ncRNAs contribute to aging, tissue dysfunction, and human diseases. Here we provide a comprehensive review of recent findings on epigenetic changes in cardiovascular diseases as well as the role of ncRNAs and exosomal ncRNAs in MI, focusing on their function, diagnostic and prognostic significance.

BACKGROUND: This review seeks to determine the relationship between food insecurity among elderly people over the past decades and nutrient deficiency, which is rather unclear. We aim to systematically review the relationship between food insecurity and dietary intake among elderly population. METHODS: In this systematic review, we systematically searched the international databases including PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Scopus for scientifically related papers which have been published up until January 2018. For a more refined search, we used the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and Emtree. In terms of search protocol, no restrictions were placed on time and language. Two independent reviewers conducted the data refining processes. Validated form (PRISMA) was used to conduct quality assessment and data extraction. RESULTS: Eight cross sectional studies have been included in this review. Two of the studies were conducted in Asia and the remaining six studies were largely based in the United States and Canada. Food insecurity was associated with low levels of vitamin and mineral intakes such as vitamins E, A, B, and D and also zinc, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Most studies also reported insufficient energy, and micro and macronutrients intake among elderly people. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this review evidence a considerable amount of food insecurity and nutrient deficiency, including vitamins E, C, D, B 2, and B 12 and zinc, phosphorus, and calcium among elderly population. These findings could be used as reliable evidence by policy makers and future complementary analyses.

Conductive electrospun nanofiber scaffold containing conductive polypyrrole (PPy) polymer was fabricated to accelerate healing of damaged tissues. In order to prepare these scaffolds, various weight percentages of polypyrrole (5, 10, 15, 20, 25%) relative to the polymers combination (chitosan, collagen, and polyethylene oxide) were used. The fabricated composite scaffolds were characterized using chemical, morphological, physio-mechanical, and biological analyses including; FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, electrical conductivity, tensile test, in vitro degradation, MTT Assay and cell culture. The polypyrrole particles were perfectly dispersed inside the nanofibers, and the fibers average diameter were reducing by increasing the polypyrrole content in the composites. The presence of polypyrrole in fibers enhanced their conductivity up to 164.274 × 10-3 s/m which is in the range of semi-conductive and conductive polymers. MTT and SEM analyses displayed that nanofibers composing 10% polypyrrole possess better cell adhesion, growth and proliferation properties comparing to other compositions. Furthermore, the suitable mechanical properties of scaffolds ideally fitted them for different kinds of tissue applications including skin, nerve, heart muscle, etc. Therefore, these fabricated conductive nanofiber scaffolds are particularly appropriate for employing in body parts with electrical signals such as cardiovascular, heart muscles, or nerves.

Polyrhodanines have been broadly utilized in diverse fields due to their attractive features. The effect of polyrhodanine- (PR-) based materials on human cells can be considered a controversial matter, while many contradictions exist. In this study, we focused on the synthesis of polyrhodanine/Fe3O4 modified by graphene oxide and the effect of kombucha (Ko) supernatant on results. The general structure of synthetic compounds was determined in detail through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Also, obtained compounds were morphologically, magnetically, and chemically characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The antibacterial effects of all synthesized nanomaterials were done according to CLSI against four infamous pathogens. Also, the cytotoxic effects of the synthesized compounds on the human liver cancer cell line (Hep-G2) were assessed by MTT assay. Our results showed that Go/Fe has the highest average inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and this compound possesses the least antimicrobial effect on Staphylococcus aureus. Considering the viability percent of cells in the PR/GO/Fe3O4 compound and comparing it with GO/Fe3O4, it can be understood that the toxic effects of polyrhodanine can diminish the metabolic activity of cells at higher concentrations (mostly more than 50 µg/mL), and PR/Fe3O4/Ko exhibited some promotive effects on cell growth, which enhanced the viability percent to more than 100%. Similarly, the cell viability percent of PR/GO/Fe3O4/KO compared to PR/GO/Fe3O4 is much higher, which can be attributed to the presence of kombucha in the compound. Consequently, based on the results, it can be concluded that this novel polyrhodanine-based nanocompound can act as drug carriers due to their low toxic effects and may open a new window on the antibacterial agents.

PURPOSE: Selenium (Se) is a trace element having significant effects on human metabolism. Recent studies suggest that Se supplementation have a pivotal effect on the inflammatory markers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of Se supplementation on plasma inflammatory markers including C-reactive protein (CRP) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and nitric oxide (NO) as a stress oxidative index, among patients with metabolic diseases. METHODS: To assess the effects of Se on the inflammatory markers, following the PRISMA-P guidelines, we systematically searched ISI/WOS, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus for studies that assessed the effect of Se supplementation on the inflammatory markers. Data extraction was performed by two independent investigators. Using the random effects or fixed-effects model depending on the results of heterogeneity tests was used to estimate the pooled standardized mean difference (SMD). Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using Cochran's Q test and I2 index. RESULTS: The initial search revealed 3,320 papers. After screening process and considering inclusion criteria, 7 publications were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis results showed that Se supplementation did not significantly affect CRP and hs-CRP concentrations (mean difference (MD) = -0.15; 95% CI: -0.55- 0.23; P = 0.43). Subgroup analysis of CRP type showed that Se supplementation significantly decreased hs-CRP level (pooled SMD = -0.44; 95% CI: -0.67-0.21). Moreover, no significant change was observed in NO level by continuing to take Se supplementation, (pooled SMD: 0.003, 95%CI: -0.26, 0.26). CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that Se supplementation would have desirable effects on cardio-metabolic indicators through affecting the levels of inflammatory markers. Given the importance of concerns, more attention should be given to more prospective studies with longer follow-up.

Intraguild predation (IGP) is a ubiquitous, important and common interaction that occurs in aphidophagous guilds. The effects of extraguild prey (EGP, i.e., aphids) density, predator life stage combinations and duration of the interaction on the level, asymmetry and direction of intraguild predation between lacewing Chrysoperla carnea and ladybird Hippodamia variegata were examined in simple laboratory arena and more complex microcosm environment. Three initial densities of 50, 150 and 400 Aphis fabae third instar nymphs and a control without aphids were provided to six combinations of predator life stages (2nd and 3rd larval instars of lacewing and 3rd and 4th instars and adult females of ladybird). The remaining aphid density and occurrence of IGP were checked after 24, 48 and 72 h. The IGP intensity (IGP level, IL) was similar in the simple arena (reaching 0.6 between larvae in absence of EGP and 0.3 between lacewing larvae and ladybird females) and microcosm environment (0.3 without EGP). In both environments, increasing EGP density lowered IL according to negative exponential relationship. IGP was asymmetric (general average asymmetry was 0.82 in simple arena and 0.93 in microcosm, the difference was not significant) and mostly in favour of larvae of C. carnea, except in the combination of 2nd larvae of C. carnea with the 4th larvae and adults of H. variegata. The direction of IGP, but not other characteristics, partially changed during the duration of the experiment. The incidence of IGP interactions among aphid predators under real conditions and its consequences on aphid biological control are discussed.

Kombucha is a valuable traditional natural tea that contains beneficial compounds like organic acids, minerals, different vitamins, proteins, polyphenols, and several anions. Kombucha possesses anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antifungal activity as well as hepatoprotective effects. Considering the unique properties of Kombucha, several investigations have already been conducted on its nutritional properties. In this review, an effort has been devoted to pool recent literature on the biomedical application of Kombucha under the objectives, including the chemical composition of Kombucha and industrial production, and highlight different properties of Kombucha. Finally, we explain its adverse effects and prospect. This review is an active, in-depth, and inclusive report about Kombucha and its health benefits.
