BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is high and there is currently no easy way to detect early HHD. Explore the application of radiomics using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) non-enhanced cine sequences in diagnosing HHD and latent cardiac changes caused by hypertension. METHODS: 132 patients who underwent CMR scanning were divided into groups: HHD (42), hypertension with normal cardiac structure and function (HWN) group (46), and normal control (NOR) group (44). Myocardial regions of the end-diastolic (ED) and end-systolic (ES) phases of the CMR short-axis cine sequence images were segmented into regions of interest (ROI). Three feature subsets (ED, ES, and ED combined with ES) were established after radiomic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator feature selection. Nine radiomic models were built using random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and naive Bayes. Model performance was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curves, and metrics like accuracy, area under the curve (AUC), precision, recall, and specificity. RESULTS: The feature subsets included first-order, shape, and texture features. SVM of ED combined with ES achieved the highest accuracy (0.833), with a macro-average AUC of 0.941. AUCs for HHD, HWN, and NOR identification were 0.967, 0.876, and 0.963, respectively. Precisions were 0.972, 0.740, and 0.826; recalls were 0.833, 0.804, and 0.863, respectively; and specificities were 0.989, 0.863, and 0.909, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Radiomics technology using CMR non-enhanced cine sequences can detect early cardiac changes due to hypertension. It holds promise for future use in screening for latent cardiac damage in early HHD.

PURPOSE: To compare image quality, iodine intake, and radiation dose in overweight and obese patients undergoing abdominal computed tomography (CT) enhancement using different scanning modes and contrast medium. METHODS: Ninety overweight and obese patients (25 kg/m2≤body mass index (BMI)< 30 kg/m2 and BMI≥30 kg/m2) who underwent abdominal CT-enhanced examinations were randomized into three groups (A, B, and C) of 30 each and scanned using gemstone spectral imaging (GSI) +320 mgI/ml, 100 kVp + 370 mgI/ml, and 120 kVp + 370 mgI/ml, respectively. Reconstruct monochromatic energy images of group A at 50-70 keV (5 keV interval). The iodine intake and radiation dose of each group were recorded and calculated. The CT values, contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs), and subjective scores of each subgroup image in group A versus images in groups B and C were by using one-way analysis of variance or Kruskal-Wallis H test, and the optimal keV of group A was selected. RESULTS: The dual-phase CT values and CNRs of each part in group A were higher than or similar to those in groups B and C at 50-60 keV, and similar to or lower than those in groups B and C at 65 keV and 70 keV. The subjective scores of the dual-phase images in group A were lower than those of groups B and C at 50 keV and 55 keV, whereas no significant difference was seen at 60-70 keV. Compared to groups B and C, the iodine intake in group A decreased by 12.5% and 13.3%, respectively. The effective doses in groups A and B were 24.7% and 25.8% lower than those in group C, respectively. CONCLUSION: GSI +320 mgI/ml for abdominal CT-enhanced in overweight patients satisfies image quality while reducing iodine intake and radiation dose, and the optimal keV was 60 keV.

Small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) is one of the most economically important marine fishery species. L. polyactis aquaculture has experienced stress response and the frequent occurrence of diseases, bringing huge losses to the aquaculture industry. Little is known about the regulation mechanism of heat stress response in L. polyactis. In this study, to provide an overview of the heat-tolerance mechanism of L. polyactis, the transcriptome and proteome of the liver of L. polyactis on the 6 h after high temperature (32 °C) treatment were analyzed using Illumina HiSeq 4000 platform and isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ). A total of 3700 upregulated and 1628 downregulated genes (differentially expressed genes, DEGs) were identified after heat stress in L. polyactis. Also, 198 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), including 117 upregulated and 81 downregulated proteins, were identified. Integrative analysis revealed that 72 genes were significantly differentially expressed at transcriptome and protein levels. Functional analysis showed that arginine biosynthesis, tyrosine metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, starch and sucrose metabolism, and protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum were the main pathways responding to heat stress. Among the pathways, protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum was enriched by most DEGs/DEPs, which suggests that this pathway may play a more important role in the heat stress response. Further insights into the pathway revealed that transcripts and proteins, especially HSPs and PDIs, were differentially expressed in response to heat stress. These findings contribute to existing data describing the fish response to heat stress and provide information about protein levels, which are of great significance to a deeper understanding of the heat stress responding regulation mechanism in L. polyactis and other fish species.

Ischemic stroke (IS) has become the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the prevention of IS should be given high priority. Recent studies have indicated that hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning (HBO-PC) may be a protective nonpharmacological method, but its underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study comprehensively reviewed the pathophysiology of IS and revealed the underlying mechanism of HBO-PC in protection against IS. The preventive effects of HBO-PC against IS may include inducing antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-apoptosis capacity; activating autophagy and immune responses; upregulating heat shock proteins, hypoxia-inducible factor-1, and erythropoietin; and exerting protective effects upon the blood-brain barrier. In addition, HBO-PC may be considered a safe and effective method to prevent IS in combination with stem cell therapy. Although the benefits of HBO-PC on IS have been widely observed in recent research, the implementation of this technique is still controversial due to regimen differences. Transferring the results to clinical application needs to be taken carefully, and screening for the optimal regimen would be a daunting task. In addition, whether we should prescribe an individualized preconditioning regimen to each stroke patient needs further exploration.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of applying computed tomography (CT) radiomics based on different CT-enhanced phases to determine the immunotherapeutic efficacy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: 106 patients with NSCLC who underwent immunotherapy are randomly divided into training (74) and validation (32) groups. CT-enhanced arterial and venous phase images of patients before treatment are collected. Region-of-interest (ROI) is segmented on the CT-enhanced images, and the radiomic features are extracted. One-way analysis of variance and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) are used to screen the optimal radiomics features and analyze the association between radiomics features and immunotherapy efficacy. The area under receiver-operated characteristic curves (AUC) along with the sensitivity and specificity are computed to evaluate diagnostic effectiveness. RESULTS: LASSO regression analysis screens and selects 6 and 8 optimal features in the arterial and venous phases images, respectively. Applying to the training group, AUCs based on CT-enhanced arterial and venous phase images are 0.867 (95% CI:0.82-0.94) and 0.880 (95% CI:0.86-0.91) with the sensitivities of 73.91% and 76.19%, and specificities of 66.67% and 72.19%, respectively, while in validation group, AUCs of the arterial and venous phase images are 0.732 (95% CI:0.71-0.78) and 0.832 (95% CI:0.78-0.91) with sensitivities of 75.00% and 76.00%, and specificities of 73.07% and 75.00%, respectively. There are no significant differences between AUC values computed from arterial phases and venous phases images in both training and validation groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The optimally selected radiomics features computed from CT-enhanced different-phase images can provide new imaging marks to evaluate efficacy of the targeted therapy in NSCLC with a high diagnostic value.

Heterogeneous agglomeration (HA) is a very potential technology for coal-fired flue gas treatment. In this paper, the distribution and migration mechanisms of trace elements (TEs) such as Se, As and Pb in CFPPs were studied on a 30,000 m3/hr pilot-scale experimental platform. The influences of HA on the removal efficiency of gaseous and particulate TEs were well analyzed. The results showed that Se, As and Pb were enriched in fly ash, and their sensitivity to particle size is quite different. The content of Se was the highest in PM1, reaching 193.04 mg/kg at the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) outlet. The average particle size of the total dust before ESP increased significantly from 21.686 to 62.612 µm after injecting the heterogeneous agglomeration adsorbent, conducive to its further removal by ESP. In addition, the concentrations of gaseous Se, As and Pb in the flue gas decreased after adsorbent spray, and accordingly, their contents in the hierarchical particles increased, indicating that the adsorbent could effectively promote the adsorption of gaseous trace elements in fly ash and reduce the possibility of their escape to the atmosphere. Total concentrations of Se, As and Pb emitted by wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) are 0.223, 0.668 and 0.076 µg/m3, which decreased by 59.98%, 47.69% and 90.71%, respectively. Finally, a possible HA mechanism model was proposed, where chemical adsorption, physical condensation and collision agglomeration of gaseous TEs and fine particles with adsorbent droplets occurred to form larger agglomerates.

Particulate matter (PM) has been considered to be closely related to human health, especially fine particulate matter. However, whether PM mass concentration alone is a good indicator for health impact remains a challenging question. In this study, emissions from residential coal combustion (RCC), one of the important PM sources in northern China, were tested to examine the relationship between the emission factors of particle-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) (EFROS) and PM (EFPM). A total of 24 combinations of source tests were conducted, including eight types of coal with different geological maturities (two anthracites and six bituminous) burned in three types of stoves (one honeycomb coal stove, one old chunk stove, and one new chunk stove). Here, ROS was defined as generated hydroxyl radical (·OH) by PM, and results showed EFROS from 24 residential coal combustion varied greatly by nearly 20 times. EFROS ranged 0.78-14.85 and 2.99-12.91 mg kg-1 for the emissions from honeycomb and chunk coals, respectively. Moreover, the correlation between EFROS and EFPM was significantly positive in honeycomb coal emissions (r = 0.82, p < 0.05), but it was insignificant in chunk coal emissions (r = 0.07, p > 0.05). For honeycomb coal emissions, organic carbon (OC) was quite abundant in PM and it might be the predominant contributor to both EFPM and EFROS, resulting in a strong and positive correlation. For chunk coal emissions, high EFROS was mainly related to relatively high metal emissions in AN and LVB, while the metals were not major components in PM, leading to a poor correlation between EFPM and EFROS. Therefore, this study revealed that PM was not always positively correlated with ROS from residential coal burning, and the relationship was mainly determined by the compositions of PM, suggesting PM mass concentration alone may not be the best indicator for assessing health impacts.

Due to the lack of black carbon (BC) measurement data in some cases, elemental carbon (EC) is often used as a surrogate of BC, with a simple assumption that they are interchangeable. Such assumption will inevitably lead to uncertainties in radiative forcing estimation and health impact assessment. In order to quantitatively and systematically evaluate the relationship between BC and EC as well as factors responsible for their difference, 3-year collocated equivalent BC (eBC) and EC measurements with 1-h resolution were performed in Beijing, China continuously from 2016 to 2019. EBC concentration was measured by the multi-wavelength aethalometer (AE-33) based on optical analysis, while EC concentration was determined by semi-continuous OC/EC analyzer with thermal-optical method. The results showed that around 90% of eBC concentration was higher than that of EC, with average difference between eBC and EC as 1.21 µg m-3 (accounting for 33% of average eBC in Beijing). EBC and EC concentrations exhibited strong correlation (r = 0.90) during the whole study period, but the slopes (or eBC/EC ratio) and correlation coefficients varied across seasons (spring: 1.67 and 0.94; summer: 0.91 and 0.65; fall: 1.15 and 0.88; winter: 1.09 and 0.91, respectively). Based on the information from shell/core ratios by Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), source apportionment results by positive matrix factorization model, and chemical composition of PM2.5, the differences between eBC and EC concentrations were found to be primarily related to BC aging process and secondary components as evidenced by strong positive correlation with secondary species (e.g., secondary organic carbon and nitrate). This study provided seasonal specific conversion factors of eBC and EC in Beijing and helpful reference for other areas, which will contribute new knowledge of carbonaceous aerosol and reduce uncertainty in assessing future climate change and health studies of BC.

OBJECTIVES: To compare image quality and radiation dose of computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the head and neck in patients using two Gemstone Spectral Imaging (GSI) scanning protocols. METHODS: A total of 100 patients who underwent head-neck CTA were divided into two groups (A and B) according to the scanning protocols, with 50 patients in each group. The patients in group A underwent GSI scanning protocol 1 (GSI profile: head and neck CTA), while those in group B underwent GSI scanning protocol 2 (GSI profile: chest 80 mm). All images were reconstructed using 40% and 70% pre- and post-adaptive level statistical iterative reconstruction V (pre-ASiR-V and post-ASiR-V) algorithms, respectively. The CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose-length (DLP) product were recorded and the mean value was calculated and converted to the effective dose. CT values, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of all images were calculated. Additionally, subjective image evaluation was conducted by two independent radiologists using a five-point scoring method. All data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the CT values, SNR, CNR, and subjective score between groups A and B (p > 0.05); however, the mean effective dose (1.2±0.1 mSv) in group B was 45.5% lower than that in group A (2.2±0.2 mSv) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: GSI scanning protocol 2 could more effectively reduce the radiation dose in head-neck CT angiography while maintaining image quality compared to GSI scanning protocol 1.

OBJECTIVES: To compare image quality, radiation dose, and iodine intake of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) acquired by wide-detector using different tube voltages and different concentrations of contrast medium (CM) for overweight patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 overweight patients (body mass index≥25 kg/m2) who underwent CCTA are enrolled and divided into three groups according to scan protocols namely, group A (120 kVp, 370 mgI/ml CM); group B (100 kVp, 350 mgI/ml CM); and group C (80 kVp, 320 mgI/ml CM). The CT values, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and figure-of-merit (FOM) of all images are calculated. Images are subjectively assessed using a 5-point scale. In addition, the CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) of each patient are recorded. The effective radiation dose (ED) is also calculated. Above data are then statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The mean CT values, SNR, CNR, and subjective image quality of group A are significantly lower than those of groups B and C (P < 0.001), but there is no significant difference between groups B and C (P > 0.05). FOMs show a significantly increase trend from group A to C (P < 0.001). The ED values and total iodine intake in groups B and C are 30.34% and 68.53% and 10.22% and 16.85% lower than those in group A, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The lower tube voltage and lower concentration of CM based on wide-detector allows for significant reduction in iodine load and radiation dose in CCTA for overweight patients comparing to routine scan protocols. It also enhances signal intensity of CCTA and maintains image quality.

Objectives: To investigate the clinical value of contrast-enhanced CT combined with PET/CT in the differential diagnosis of mediastinal lymph node metastasis (MLNM) of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: A total of 120 patients with NSCLC combined with mediastinal lymphadenopathy hospitalized in our hospital were selected. All the patients received radical resection of lung cancer and mediastinal lymphadenectomy. After pathological diagnosis, they were divided into MLNM group (malignant group, undergoing contrast-enhanced CT) and non-MLNM group (benign group, receiving contrast-enhanced CT combined with PET-CT). The results were judged by two senior radiologists independently. The results of different scanning methods and postoperative pathology were compared using the t test, χ2 test and Pearson correlation coefficient test. Results: Compared with the pathological results, contrast-enhanced CT diagnosed 31 cases, with a coincidence rate of 62%, and contrast-enhanced CT combined with PET-CT diagnosed 42 cases, with a coincidence rate of 84%, presenting a statistically significant difference (P = 0.02). Among the 120 patients with lung cancer, pathological examination confirmed MLNM in 50 patients and benign enlargement in 70 patients, contrast-enhanced CT alone detected metastasis in 40 patients and benign enlargement in 80 patients, and contrast-enhanced CT combined with PET-CT detected metastasis in 47 patients and benign enlargement in 73 patients. The sensitivity and accuracy of the latter were significantly higher than those of the former (sensitivity, P = 0.01; accuracy, P = 0.01). With the increase in the malignancy of lymph nodes, the degree of CT enhancement, the concentration of radioactive substances and SUV value increased, showing positive correlations. Conclusion: Contrast-enhanced CT combined with PET/CT in the diagnosis of MLNM of NSCLC presents higher coincidence rate, sensitivity and accuracy. With the increase in tumor malignancy, the enhancement degree and radioactive substance concentration increase. The two methods are synergistic and complementary in diagnosing MLNM.

Under the influence of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), China conducted a nationwide lockdown (LD) which significantly reduced anthropogenic emissions. To analyze the different impacts of COVID-19 on black carbon (BC) in the two representative regions in China, one-year continuous online measurements of BC were conducted simultaneously in Beijing and Tibet. The average concentration in the LD period was 20% higher than that in the pre-LD period in Beijing, which could be attributed to the increase of transport from southwestern neighboring areas and enhanced aged BC. In contrast to megacity, the average concentration of BC in Tibet decreased over 70% in the LD period, suggesting high sensitivity of plateau background areas to the anthropogenic emission reduction in South Asia. Our study clearly showed that BC responded very differently in megacity and background areas to the change of anthropogenic emission under the lockdown intervention.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal pre-adaptive and post-adaptive level statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASiR-V) for improving image quality and reducing radiation dose in coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: The study was divided into two parts. In part I, 150 patients for CCTA were prospectively enrolled and randomly divided into 5 groups (A, B, C, D, and E) with progressive scanning from 40% to 80% pre-ASiR-V with 10% intervals and reconstructing with 70% post-ASiR-V. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated. Subjective image quality was assessed using a 5-point scale. The CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) and dose-length product (DLP) of each patient were recorded and the effective radiation dose (ED) was calculated after statistical analysis by optimizing for the best pre-ASiR-V value with the lowest radiation dose while maintaining overall image quality. In part II, the images were reconstructed with the recommended optimal pre-ASiR-V values in part I (D group) and 40%-90% of post-ASiR-V. The reconstruction group (D group) was divided into 6 subgroups (interval 10%, D0:40% post-ASiR-V, D1:50% post - ASiR-V, D2:60% post-ASiR-V, D3:70% post-ASiR-V, D4:80% post-ASiR-V, and D5:90% post-ASiR-V).The SNR and CNR of D0-D5 subgroups were calculated and analyzed using one-way analysis of variance, and the consistency of the subjective scores used the k test. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the SNRs, CNRs, and image quality scores among A, B, C, and D groups (P > 0.05). The SNR, CNR, and image quality scores of the E group were lower than those of the A, B, C, and D groups (P < 0.05). The mean EDs in the B, C, and D groups were reduced by 7.01%, 13.37%, and 18.87%, respectively, when compared with that of the A group. The SNR and CNR of the D4-D5 subgroups were higher than the D0-D3 subgroups, and the image quality scores of the D4 subgroups were higher than the other subgroups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The wide-detector combined with 70% pre-ASiR-V and 80% post-ASiR-V significantly reduces the radiation dose of CCTA while maintaining overall image quality as compared with the manufacture's recommendation of 40% pre-ASiR-V.

RESUMEN

Microwave assisted hydrothermal treatment (MHTC) was compared with torrefaction in terms of carbonization efficiency and physicochemical characteristics of char products. The utilization of produced char was optimized for composite solid biofuel production. The results show that MHTC significantly improved the binding capability of the microwave hydrochar (MHC) particles during co-densification with unprocessed biomass and coal. One possible contributor to the improved binding is the pseudo lignin formed during the MHTC, which led to a better interlocking of the feedstock particles and promoted the solid bridge formation. Composite pellet prepared with 80 wt% of torrefaction char (TC-120), 10 wt% of microwave hydrochar (MHC-30), and 10 wt% of Coal-04 showed a higher heating value of 24.54 MJ/kg and energy density of 26.43 GJ/m3, which is significantly higher than that of the raw cotton stalk pellet (16.77 MJ/kg and 18.76 GJ/m3, respectively), showing great promise as a solid biofuel. The moisture resistance and oxidation reactivity are also significantly improved. The results demonstrate that MHCs provides dual functionalities in acting as binder and fuel promoter in the production of composite biofuel. This study can provide new insight into the unique functions of MHC during fuel application, which demonstrates the great potential of applying MHTC in energy recovery from lignocellulosic biomass.

OBJECTIVE: To compare image quality, radiation dose, and iodine intake of head-neck CT angiography (CTA) acquired by wide-detector with the gemstone spectral imaging (GSI) combination with low iodine intake or routine scan protocol. METHODS: Three hundred patients who had head-neck CTA were enrolled and divided into three groups according to their BMI values: group A (18.5 kg/m2 ≦ BMI <24.9 kg/m2), group B (24.9 kg/m2 ≦ BMI <29.9 kg/m2) and group C (29.9 kg/m2 ≦ BMI ≦ 34.9 kg/m2) with 100 patients in each group. Patients in each group were randomly divided into two subgroups (n = 50) namely, A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. The patients in subgroups A1, B1 and C1 underwent GSI with low iodine intake (270 mgI/ml, 50 ml) and combined with the ASiR-V algorithm. Other patients underwent three dimensional (3D) smart mA modulation with routine iodine intake (350 mgI/ml, 60 ml). Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of all images were calculated after angiography. Images were then subjectively assessed using a 5-point scale. CT dose index of volume and dose-length product (DLP) was converted to the effective dose (ED) and then compared. RESULTS: The mean CT values, SNR, CNR and subjective image quality in subgroups A2, B2 and C2 are significantly lower than in subgroups A1, B1, and C1 (P < 0.01), respectively. The ED values in subgroup A1, B1, and C1 are 55.18%, 61.89%, and 69.64% lower than those in A2, B2, and C2, respectively (P < 0.01). The total iodine intakes in subgroups A1, B1, and C1 are 35.72% lower than those in subgroups A2, B2, and C2. CONCLUSIONS: The gemstone spectral imaging with monochromatic images at 53-57 keV combined with ASiR-V algorithm allows significant reduction in iodine load and radiation dose in head-neck CT angiography than those yielded in routine scan protocol. It also enhances signal intensity of head-neck CTA and maintains image quality.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the difference in absorbed organ dose and image quality for head-neck CT angiography using organ dose modulation compared with 3D smart mA modulation in different body mass indices (BMIs) using an adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR-V) algorithm. METHODS: Three hundred patients underwent head-neck CTA were equally divided into three groups: A (18.5 kg/m2≦BMI < 24.9 kg/m2), B (24.9 kg/m2≦BMI < 29.9 kg/m2) and C (29.9 kg/m2≦BMI≦34.9 kg/m2). The groups were randomly subdivided into two subgroups (n = 50): A1-A2, B1-B2 and C1-C2. The patients in subgroups A1, B1 and C1 underwent organ dose modulation with the ASiR-V algorithm, while other patients underwent 3D smart mA modulation. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of all head-neck CT angiography images were calculated. Images were then subjectively evaluated. Mean values of several indices including dose-length product (DLP) were computed. The DLP was converted to the effective dose (ED). SNR, CNR and ED in groups A, B, and C were compared in statistical data analysis. RESULTS: SNR, CNR, and subjective image scores show no statistical differences in three groups (P  >  0.05). However, there is significant difference of ED values (P  <  0.05) . For example, in subgroup A1 mean ED values are 15.30% and 23.66% lower than those in subgroup A2 at thyroid gland and eye lens, respectively. Similar patterns also exist in groups B (B1 vs. B2) and C (C1 vs. C2). CONCLUSIONS: Using organ dose modulation and applying the ASiR-V algorithm can more effectively reduce the radiation dose in head-neck CT angiography than using 3D smart mA modulation, while maintaining image quality. Thus, using organ-based dose modulation has the additional benefit of reducing dose to the thyroid gland and eye lens.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Unlike other organs, which only have one set of capillary network, the renal microvasculature consists of two sets of capillary network series connected by efferent arterioles. Angiotensin II constricts the efferent glomerular artery. Hence, renal tumor blood flow (BF) distribution may be different from tumors in other organs. This study aims to investigate the effects of angiotensin II on the hemodynamics of intrarenal VX2 tumors using perfusion computed tomography(CT). METHODS: Twenty-four male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: groups A (blank controls), group B (negative controls), and group C (angiotensin II-treated animals). Group B and C were established to the model of intrarenal VX2 tumors. Furthermore, perfusion CT of the kidney was performed in each group. Prior to perfusion CT scan in group C, the mean arterial blood was elevated to 150-160 mmHg by angiotensin II. The BF, blood volume (BV), mean transit time (MTT), capillary permeability-surface area product (PS), and relative permeability-surface area product (RPS) of tumors and renal tissues were calculated. RESULTS: Compared with normal renal cortex tissues in group A, the BF, BV and PS values of tumors in group B were significantly lower, MTT was prolonged and RPS increased. Compared with group B, only the RPS of these tumors increased from 83.23 ± 29.17% to 120.94 ± 31.84% by angiotensin II infusion. Angiotensin II significantly increased the RPS value of the renal cortex distant from the tumor (CDT) and the right renal cortex (RRC). CONCLUSIONS: Perfusion CT can accurately observe the influence of angiotensin II on normal and tumor BF in kidneys. This clarifies the effect of angiotensin II on intrarenal tumor hemodynamics.

Two enantiomeric pairs of new 3d-4f heterometallic clusters have been built from two enantiomer Schiff base derivatives, labeled as R-/ S-H2L, in situ obtained from the condensation reactions with o-vanillin and R-/ S-2-phenylglycinol. The formulas of the series clusters are [Mn6Ln2(µ3-OH)4(µ4-O)(Ac)4(H2O)2( R-L)6]·NO3·OH (Ln = Dy (1R), Gd (2R)), [Mn6Ln2(µ3-OH)4(µ4-O)(Ac)4(H2O)2( S-L)6]·NO3·OH (Ln = Dy (1S), Gd (2S)), whose crystal structures and magnetic properties have been characterized. Structural analysis indicated that the above clusters consisted of a [Mn6Ln2] core, featuring a sandwich configuration. The results of magnetic measurements showed the presence of slow magnetic relaxation with the effective energy barrier of 14.85 K in two Dy derivatives under the condition of zero-dc field, while the significant magnetocaloric effect of Gd analogues was found in a wide temperature range.

By utilizing a flexible tetrapyridinate ligand, tetrakis(4-pyridyloxymethylene) methane(L), a novel multifunctional soft porous framework, [Co(NCS)2(L)]·2H2O·CH3OH (1), was constructed. This framework exhibits quick and selective solvatochromic and vapochromic behavior during a reversible crystal-to-amorphous-to-crystal (CAC) transformation. Importantly, the rapid CAC transition can selectively be triggered by methanol molecules, even at low concentrations of liquid or gaseous methanol. This reproducible transition can be monitored by single-crystal and power X-ray analysis, IR, and UV-vis, which all powerfully illustrate the selectivity and sensitivity of this system. In addition, the typical magnetic behavior of single ion magnets (SIMs) has been successfully introduced into this 3D framework, and the modified dynamic relaxations have been investigated via experimental and theoretical analysis. The consistent observations of both experimental and theoretical results support that the distortions of the metal coordination environments should be responsible for the finely tuned SIM behavior.

RESUMEN

How the organ size is determined is a fundamental question in developmental biology. The metazoan Hippo signaling pathway is well established to negatively regulate organ sizes. Recent studies in plants have started to shape an emerging Hippo signaling pathway. In this review, we summarize the studies in the past decade on the two known components of plant Hippo signaling pathway, the Ste20/Hippo homolog SIK1, and the MOB1/Mats homolog MOB1, with a focus on their developmental functions. Then we envision future discoveries that may shape a complete Hippo signaling pathway in plants.
