Community weighted means (CWMs) are widely used to study the relationship between community-level functional traits and environment. For certain null hypotheses, CWM-environment relationships assessed by linear regression or ANOVA and tested by standard parametric tests are prone to inflated Type I error rates. Previous research has found that this problem can be solved by permutation tests (i.e., the max test). A recent extension of the CWM approach allows the inclusion of intraspecific trait variation (ITV) by the separate calculation of fixed, site-specific, and intraspecific CWMs. The question is whether the same Type I error rate inflation exists for the relationship between environment and site-specific or intraspecific CWM. Using simulated and real-world community datasets, we show that site-specific CWM-environment relationships have also inflated Type I error rate, and this rate is negatively related to the relative ITV magnitude. In contrast, for intraspecific CWM-environment relationships, standard parametric tests have the correct Type I error rate, although somewhat reduced statistical power. We introduce an ITV-extended version of the max test, which can solve the inflation problem for site-specific CWM-environment relationships and, without considering ITV, becomes equivalent to the "original" max test used for the CWM approach. We show that this new ITV-extended max test works well across the full possible magnitude of ITV on both simulated and real-world data. Most real datasets probably do not have intraspecific trait variation large enough to alleviate the problem of inflated Type I error rate, and published studies possibly report overly optimistic significance results.

BACKGROUND: As part of the fight against coronavirus disease, Nigeria received nearly 4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine via the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) Facility, marking a historic step towards equitable global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. Although evidence exists on COVID-19 hesitancy in Nigeria, yet, we are unaware of any study on the optimization of COVID-19 vaccination from the lenses of the mobile teams. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to explore the perceptions and experiences of mobile teams in selected communities during the implementation of COVID-19 vaccination in Benue and Niger. METHODS: An exploratory approach was adopted, and the study was conducted in Niger and Benue states based on poor performance in COVID-19 vaccination. Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were conducted among 12 mobile vaccination teams from 12 LGAs. The recorded discussions were transcribed and coded (inductively and deductively) using Dedoose software (v9.0). Four themes and seven sub-themes were generated from the participants' responses. RESULTS: Seventy-two (72) health workers including vaccinators, validators, Electronic Management of Immunization Data (EMID) recorders, social mobilizers, and paper recorders participated in this study. Health workers' perceptions and experiences were thematized using the health building blocks. The mobilization teams in Benue and Niger states perceived that their mobilization efforts contributed to improved coverage, increased accessibility, and reduced hesitancy among the community dwellers. Challenges reported by the teams were vaccine misconceptions, requests for incentives in exchange for vaccine uptake, poor network services, distance to communities, and vaccine stockout. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that social mobilizers play key roles in vaccine uptake, especially at the community level. Their roles in creating awareness, sensitization, and bringing the vaccine closer to hard-to-reach communities contributed to the success attained in the fight against COVID-19 in both states.

BACKGROUND: Over time, Uganda has experienced high levels of maternal mortality (435 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2006 to 336 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2016). The persistence of high levels of maternal mortality jeopardizes the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.1, which calls for reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. Conversely, the utilization of postnatal care (PNC) services in Uganda remained very low and has varied across regions. This study examined the individual and community-level factors influencing women's utilization of postnatal care services in Uganda. METHODS: Secondary data from the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) were used in this study. The study population consisted of women aged 15 to 49 who reported giving birth in the five years preceding the 2016 UDHS survey. The factors associated with postnatal care services were identified using multilevel binary logistic regression and spatial analysis. RESULTS: The result shows that the prevalence of postnatal care service utilization in Uganda was low (58.3%) compared to the World Health Organization (WHO) target of 100%. The univariate analysis shows that 13.7% of women were adolescents, 79% were of higher parity, and 70.4% had primary/no formal education, of which 76.6% resided in rural areas. On the other hand, the multilevel analysis results showed that women aged 20-29 years and 30-39 years were also found to be more likely to use PNC services (AOR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.01-1.47). Women who received quality ANC (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.78-2.36) were more likely to use postnatal care services than their counterparts. At the community level, women who lived in media-saturated communities were more likely to use postnatal care services (AOR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.01-1.65). The spatial analysis found that the Central, Eastern, and Northern regions were the areas of hotspots in the utilization of postnatal care services. CONCLUSION: This study found that age, parity, level of education, place of residence, employment status, quality of the content of antenatal care, and community media saturation were the predictors of postnatal care service utilization. The spatial analysis showed that the spatial distributions of postnatal care service utilization were significantly varied across Uganda. The government must expand access to various forms of media throughout the country to increase PNC utilization.

Soil is home to microbiota with diverse metabolic activities. These microorganisms play vital roles in many ecological processes. Thus, the assessment of microbial functional diversity is an important quality indicator of soil ecosystems. In this study, we collected soil samples from three distinct forest habitats, i.e., an agroforest, a primary forest (PF), and a secondary forest, within the Angat Watershed Reservation in Bulacan, Northern Philippines. Community-level physiological profiling (CLPP) was done with the BIOLOG EcoPlate™ to analyze the responses of the soil microbial communities from the three forest habitats in the absence or presence of antibiotics. The BIOLOG EcoPlate represents 31 utilizable carbon sources. Based on the CLPP analysis, soil samples from the PF showed significantly higher utilization of most carbon sources than the other forest types (p < 0.05). Thus, less disturbed forest types constitute more functionally diverse microbial communities. The presence of antibiotics significantly decreased the carbon utilization patterns of the soil microbial communities (p < 0.05), indicating the possible use of CLPP in monitoring contamination in soil.

In the present study, we have underpinned the serpentine rock, serpentinized ultramafic soil and rhizosphere's microbial communities, signifying their heavy metals-exposed taxa signatures and functional repertoires in comparison to non-serpentine soils. The results revealed that the serpentine rock embedded soil highlighted the geo-accumulation of higher amount of Cr and Ni impacting soil microbial diversity negatively by metal stress-driven selection. Biolog Ecoplate CLPP defined a restricted spectrum of C-utilization in the higher heavy metal-containing serpentine samples compared to non-serpentine. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) score identified a higher abundance of Desulfobacterota, Opitutales, and Bacteroidales in low Cr and Ni-stressed non-serpentine-exposed samples. Whereas the abundance of Propionibacteriales and Actinobacteriota were significantly enriched in the serpentine niche. Further, the C, N, S, Fe, and methane biogeochemical cycles linked functional members were identified, and showing higher functional diversity in low Cr and Ni concentration-containing rhizosphere JS-soils. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) value confirmed the abundance of functional members linked to specific biogeochemical cycle, positively correlated with relevant pathway enrichment. Ultimately, this study highlighted the heavy metal stress within a serpentine setting that could limit the resident microbial community's metabolic diversity and further select the bacteria that could thrive in the serpentine-associated heavy metal-stressed soils. These acclimatized microbes could pave the way for the future applications in the soil conservation and management.

BACKGROUND: Adequate antenatal care services (ANC) use is critical to identifying and reducing pregnancy risks. Despite the importance placed on adequate antenatal care service utilization, women in Uganda continue to underutilize antenatal care services. The primary goal of this study is to identify the factors associated with women's adequate utilization of antenatal care services in Uganda. METHODS: Secondary data from the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey were used in this study. The study sample consists of 9,416 women aged 15 to 49 who reported giving birth in the five years preceding the survey. The adequate use of antenatal care services is the dependent variable. A woman who used antenatal care services at least four times is considered to have adequately used antenatal care services. We used univariate, bivariate, and multilevel logistic regression modelling to identify the factors associated with adequate utilization of antenatal care services. STATA version 14.2 was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The prevalence of adequate utilization of antenatal care services in Uganda was found to be 61.4%. Women with secondary or higher education were 32.0% (AOR = 1.32, 95% CI;1.07-1.63), employed women were 26.0% (AOR = 1.26, 95% CI;1.10-1.44), women who received high-quality antenatal care content were 78.0% (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI;1.58-2.02), and women who belong to the rich category of the wealth index bracket were 27.0% (AOR = 1.27, 95% CI;1.09-1.49), more likely to use antenatal care services adequately. Finally, the study discovered that women from less diverse ethnic communities were 15.0% (AOR, 0.85, 95%CI; 0.73-0.99) less likely to use antenatal care services adequately. CONCLUSION: Women's adequate utilization of antenatal care was influenced by both community and individual-level characteristics. Policymakers must use a multi-sectoral approach to develop policies that address both individual and community-level characteristics.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has established a link between intimate partner violence (IPV) and decision-making autonomy on women's mental, physical, and reproductive health consequences, as well as child nutritional status. However, there is a scarcity of research on the effects of IPV and decision-making autonomy on women's nutritional status. To date, no research has been conducted in Ethiopia to investigate the impact of IPV and decision-making autonomy on women's nutritional status. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between IPV and decision-making power at both the individual and community levels on women's nutritional status. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2016 Ethiopian demographic and health survey. Our study focused on 3,660 married non-pregnant women of reproductive age. We used the chi-squared test and spearman correlation coefficients for bivariate analysis. The relationship between IPV and decision making power with nutritional status was evaluated using multilevel binary logistic regression models while controlling other determinants. RESULTS: Around 28% of women reported at least one of the four types of IPV. Approximately 32% of women had no decision-making power at home. About 27.1% of women were underweight (BMI < 18.5), while 10.6% were overweight/obese (BMI ≥ 25). Women who had sexual IPV had a higher chance of being underweight (AOR = 2.97; 95% CI: 2.02-4.38) than women who had no sexual IPV. While women who had decision-making power at home were at lower odds of being underweight (AOR = 0.83; 95% CI: 0.69-0.98) than their counterparts. The findings also revealed a negative relationship between being overweight/obese and community-level women's decision-making autonomy (AOR = 0.75; 95% CI 0.34-0.89). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show the presence of a significant association between IPV & decision-making autonomy with women's nutritional status. Therefore, effective policies and programs to end violence against women and encourage women to participate in decision-making are required. This will help to improve the nutritional status of women as well as the nutritional outcomes of their families. This study suggests that efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG5) may have an impact on other SDGs particularly SDG2.

INTRODUCTION: In less developed countries, including the Gambia, childhood diarrhea is one of the leading causes of serious illness and death among children. Studies on wider determinants of behaviors in medical treatment seeking for diarrheal illnesses in poor resource settings are limited. However, the challenges are continuing and, there is a gap in research work about it in the Gambia. Therefore, the rationale of this study was to assess the individual and community level factors of medical treatment-seeking behaviors for childhood diarrhea among mothers in the Gambia. METHODS: Data from the 2019-20 Gambia demographic and health survey were used in this study, which was based on secondary data analysis. A total of 1,403 weighted samples of under-five children's mothers were included in the study for diarrhea medical treatment-seeking behaviors. Because of the hierarchical nature of the data, a multi-level logistic regression model was applied to identify individual and community-level factors that may influence mothers' medical treatment-seeking behaviors of diarrhea. Data were analyzed using multilevel logistic regression analysis. In the multivariable multilevel logistic regression analysis, variables were judged significantly linked with medical treatment-seeking behavior of diarrhea if their p-value was less than 0. 05. RESULTS: Medical treatment-seeking behaviors for diarrhea were discovered in 62.24% (95% CI: 59.67,64.74) of mothers of under five children. Being a female child has shown odds of (AOR = 0.79, (CI 95%: (0.62,0.98)) times less treatment-seeking behavior than the counterparts. Moreover, compared to mothers whose children were of average size, those whose children were smaller, and larger than average at birth were more likely to seek out pediatric medical treatment (AOR = 1.53, 95% CI (1.08-2.16), and (AOR = 1.31, 95% CI (1.01,1.169)) respectively. On the other side, mothers who have exposure to listening to the radio, and heard about oral rehydration have shown an odds of (AOR = 1.34, CI 95%, (1.05,1.72)), (AOR = 2.21, CI 95%, (1.14,4.30)), being from the middle, and rich household wealth have also shown (AOR = 2.15, CI 95%, (1.32,3.51)), and (AOR = 1.92, (CI 95%, (1.11,3.32)), a child with cough, and fever (AOR = 1.44, CI 95%, (1.09,1.89)), and (AOR = 1.73, CI 95%, (1.33,2.25)) were individual-level factors that have shown association statistically with the outcome variable. Similarly, regarding community level factors mothers who had a postnatal checkup, and those from the Kerewan region have revealed more odds of (AOR = 1.48, CI 95%, (1.08,2.02)), and (AOR = 2.99, CI 95%, (1.32,6.78)) times significantly with treatment seeking behavior of mothers respectively. CONCLUSION: Diarrhea medical treatment-seeking behavior was found low. Hence, it remains among the top public health challenges in the Gambia. Strengthening mothers' healthcare-seeking behavior and skills on home remedies, and childhood illnesses, advocating mass media exposure, assisting financially disadvantaged mothers, and postnatal checkups after delivery will enhance medical treatment-seeking behavior. Furthermore, coordinating with regional states, and designing timely policies and interventions are highly advisable in the country.

Global prevalence of antibiotic residues (ABX) in rivers requires ecotoxicological impact assessment. River microbial communities serve as effective bioindicators for this purpose. We quantified the effects of eight commonly used ABXs on a freshwater river microbial community using Biolog EcoPlates™, enabling the assessment of growth and physiological profile changes. Microbial community characterization involved 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The river community structure was representative of aquatic ecosystems, with the prevalence of Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Our findings reveal that all ABXs at 100 µg/mL reduced microbial community growth and metabolic capacity, particularly for polymers, carbohydrates, carboxylic, and ketonic acids. Chloramphenicol, erythromycin, and gentamicin exhibited the highest toxicity, with chloramphenicol notably impairing the metabolism of all studied metabolite groups. At lower concentrations (1 µg/mL), some ABXs slightly enhanced growth and the capacity to metabolize substrates, such as carbohydrates, carboxylic, and ketonic acids, and amines, except for amoxicillin, which decreased the metabolic capacity across all metabolites. We explored potential correlations between physicochemical parameters and drug mechanisms to understand drug bioavailability. Acute toxicity effects at the river-detected low concentrations (ng/L) are unlikely. However, they may disrupt microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems. The utilization of a wide array of genetically characterized microbial communities, as opposed to a single species, enables a better understanding of the impact of ABXs on complex river ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood is a critical stage for the prevention of dental caries. The prevalence of caries in preschool children is still high in Taiwan, where National Health Insurance covers 99% of the population. The effort to improve the oral health of preschool children should be based on conceptual model that encompasses more than individual-level factors. This study input nationwide survey data in a conceptual model to evaluate the effects of comprehensive factors related to the high prevalence of caries in preschool children. METHODS: This observation study examined factors related to the oral health of preschool children by employing a comprehensive multilevel model to analyse nationally representative data from the Taiwan Oral Health Survey of Preschool Children (TOHPC) 2017-2018. Individual-level, family-level and community-level contextual effects were evaluated through multilevel analysis in this study. The proportional change in variance (PCV) was used to compare the multilevel model with the null model and individual-level, family-level, and community-level context effects. RESULTS: The estimated deft index for preschool children was 1.34 (1.22-1.47) at age 3, 2.20 (2.08-2.32) at age 4, and 3.05 (2.93-3.18) at age 5. The overall prevalence of caries in preschool children in Taiwan was 34.27% (30.76%, 37.78%) at age 3, 51.67% (48.99%, 54.35%) at age 4, and 62.05% (59.66%, 64.44%) at age 5. The model that included the individual-, family-, and community-context levels exhibited the highest reduction of variance (PCV = 53.98%). The PCV was further reduced to 35.61% when only the level of accessibility to dental services for individuals, families, and the community was considered. For the model in which no community-context cofactors were considered and the model considering only the individual level, the PCVs were 20.37% and 5.52%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate the key components that affect oral health in preschool children and can serve as a reference for policy makers. The most notable finding of this study is that to improve the oral health of preschool children, community-level factors should be targeted. To rely solely on dentists for leading oral health education programs for children is impractical and inefficient. Training more professional oral health educators to provide additional community-based oral health promotion campaigns is critical. We suggest training more professional oral health educators to provide more community-based oral health promotion campaigns.

Marine classification schemes based on abiotic surrogates often inform regional marine conservation planning in lieu of detailed biological data. However, these schemes may poorly represent ecologically relevant biological patterns required for effective design and management strategies. We used a community-level modeling approach to characterize and delineate representative mesoscale (tens to thousands of kilometers) assemblages of demersal fish and benthic invertebrates in the Northwest Atlantic. Hierarchical clustering of species occurrence data from four regional annual multispecies trawl surveys revealed three to six groupings (predominant assemblage types) in each survey region, broadly associated with geomorphic and oceanographic features. Indicator analyses identified 3-34 emblematic taxa of each assemblage type. Random forest classifications accurately predicted assemblage distributions from environmental covariates (AUC > 0.95) and identified thermal limits (annual minimum and maximum bottom temperatures) as important predictors of distribution in each region. Using forecasted oceanographic conditions for the year 2075 and a regional classification model, we projected assemblage distributions in the southernmost bioregion (Scotian Shelf-Bay of Fundy) under a high emissions climate scenario (RCP 8.5). Range expansions to the northeast are projected for assemblages associated with warmer and shallower waters of the Western Scotian Shelf over the 21st century as thermal habitat on the relatively cooler Eastern Scotian Shelf becomes more favorable. Community-level modeling provides a biotic-informed approach for identifying broadscale ecological structure required for the design and management of ecologically coherent, representative, well-connected networks of Marine Protected Areas. When combined with oceanographic forecasts, this modeling approach provides a spatial tool for assessing sensitivity and resilience to climate change, which can improve conservation planning, monitoring, and adaptive management.

Community-level resource management efforts are cornerstones in ensuring sustainable use of natural resources. Yet, understanding how community characteristics influence management practices remains contested. With a sample size of ≥725 communities, we assessed the effects of key community (i.e., socioeconomic) characteristics (human population size and density, market integration, and modernization) on the probability of occurrence of fisheries management practices, including gear, species, and spatial restrictions. The study was based in Solomon Islands, a Pacific Island country with a population that is highly dependent on coastal fisheries. People primarily dwell in small communities adjacent to the coastline dispersed across 6 island provinces and numerous smaller islands. We used nationally collected data in binomial logistic regression models to examine the likelihood of management occurrence, given socioeconomic context of communities. In contrast to prevailing views, we identified a positive and statistically significant association between both human population size and market integration and all 3 management practices. Human population density, however, had a statistically significant negative association and modernization a varied and limited association with occurrence of all management practices. Our method offers a way to remotely predict the occurrence of resource management practices based on key socioeconomic characteristics. It could be used to improve understanding of why some communities conduct natural resource management activities when statistical patterns suggest they are not likely to and thus improve understanding of how some communities of people beat the odds despite limited market access and high population density.


Los esfuerzos por manejar los recursos a nivel comunitario son pilares para garantizar el uso sustentable de los recursos naturales. Aun así, el conocimiento sobre cómo las características comunitarias influyen sobre las prácticas de manejo todavía está en discusión. Con un tamaño de muestra de ≥725 comunidades, evaluamos los efectos de las características (tamaño y densidad poblacional humana, integración del mercado y modernización) comunitarias (es decir, socioeconómicas) clave sobre la probabilidad de incidencia de las prácticas de manejo de las pesquerías, incluyendo el equipamiento, las especies y las restricciones espaciales. Usamos datos recolectados en todo el país en unos modelos de regresión logística binomial para examinar la probabilidad de incidencia del manejo, dado el contexto socioeconómico de las comunidades. Contrario a las opiniones predominantes, identificamos una asociación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre el tamaño poblacional humano y la integración del mercado y entre las tres prácticas de manejo. La densidad poblacional humana, sin embargo, tuvo una asociación negativa estadísticamente significativa y la modernización una asociación variada y limitada con la incidencia de las prácticas de manejo. Nuestro método ofrece una manera para predecir remotamente la incidencia de las prácticas de manejo de recursos con base en características socioeconómicas importantes. One year after the start of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in England, more than 43 million people older than 12 years old had received at least a first dose. Nevertheless, geographical differences persist, and vaccine hesitancy is still a major public health concern; understanding its determinants is crucial to managing the COVID-19 pandemic and preparing for future ones. In this cross-sectional population-based study we used cumulative data on the first dose of vaccine received by 01-01-2022 at Middle Super Output Area level in England. We used Bayesian hierarchical spatial models and investigated if the geographical differences in vaccination uptake can be explained by a range of community-level characteristics covering socio-demographics, political view, COVID-19 health risk awareness and targeting of high risk groups and accessibility. Deprivation is the covariate most strongly associated with vaccine uptake (Odds Ratio 0.55, 95%CI 0.54-0.57; most versus least deprived areas). The most ethnically diverse areas have a 38% (95%CI 36-40%) lower odds of vaccine uptake compared with those least diverse. Areas with the highest proportion of population between 12 and 24 years old had lower odds of vaccination (0.87, 95%CI 0.85-0.89). Finally increase in vaccine accessibility is associated with COVID-19 vaccine coverage (OR 1.07, 95%CI 1.03-1.12). Our results suggest that one year after the start of the vaccination programme, there is still evidence of inequalities in uptake, affecting particularly minorities and marginalised groups. Strategies including prioritising active outreach across communities and removing practical barriers and factors that make vaccines less accessible are needed to level up the differences.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution was responsible for an estimated 6.7 million deaths globally in 2019 and 197,000 deaths in the United States. Fossil fuel combustion is the major source. HYPOTHESIS: Mapping air pollution's health impacts at the community level using publicly available data and open-source software will provide a replicable strategy for catalyzing pollution prevention. METHODS: Using EPA's Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis (BenMAP-CE) software and state data, we quantified the effects of airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution on disease, death and children's cognitive function (IQ Loss) in each city and town in Massachusetts. To develop a first-order estimate of PM2.5 pollution's impact on child IQ, we derived a concentration-response coefficient through literature review. FINDINGS: The annual mean PM2.5 concentration in Massachusetts in 2019 was 6.3 µg/M3, a level below EPA's standard of 12 µg/M3 and above WHO's guideline of 5 µg/M3. In adults, PM2.5 pollution was responsible for an estimated 2780 (Confidence Interval [CI] 2726 - 2853) deaths: 1677 (CI, 1346 - 1926) from cardiovascular disease, 2185 (CI, 941-3409) from lung cancer, 200 (CI, 66-316) from stroke, and 343 (CI, 222-458) from chronic respiratory disease. In children, PM2.5 pollution was responsible for 308 (CI, 105-471) low-weight births, 15,386 (CJ, 5433-23,483) asthma cases, and a provisionally estimated loss of nearly 2 million Performance IQ points; IQ loss impairs children's school performance, reduces graduation rates and decreases lifetime earnings. Air-pollution-related disease, death and IQ loss were most severe in low-income, minority communities, but occurred in every city and town in Massachusetts regardless of location, demographics or median family income. CONCLUSION: Disease, death and IQ loss occur at air pollution exposure levels below current EPA standards. Prevention of disease and premature death and preservation of children's cognitive function will require that EPA air quality standards be tightened. Enduring prevention will require government-incentivized transition to renewable energy coupled with phase-outs of subsidies and tax breaks for fossil fuels. Highly localized information on air pollution's impacts on health and on children's cognitive function has potential to catalyze pollution prevention.

The tropical peatlands of southern Brazil are essential for the maintenance of the Atlantic Rain Forest, one of the 25 hotspots of biodiversity in the world. Although diazotrophic micro-organisms are essential for the maintenance of this nitrogen limited ecosystem, so far studies have focused only on micro-organisms involved in the carbon cycle. In this work, peat samples were collected from three tropical peatland regions during dry and rainy seasons and their chemical and microbial characteristics were evaluated. Our results showed that the structure of the diazotrophic communities in the Brazilian tropical peatlands differs in the evaluated seasons. The abundance of the genus Bradyrhizobium showed to be affected by rainfall and peat pH. Despite the shifts of the nitrogen-fixing population in the tropical peatland caused by seasonality it showed to be constantly dominated by α-Proteobacteria followed by Cyanobacteria. In addition, more than 50% of nifH gene sequences have not been classified, indicating the necessity for more studies in tropical peatland, since the reduction of N supply in the peatlands stimulates the recalcitrant organic matter decomposition performed by peatland micro-organisms, influencing the C stock.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health conditions are of rising concern due to their increased contribution to the global burden of disease. Mental health issues are inextricably linked with other socio-cultural and health dimensions, especially in the rural areas in developing countries. The complex relationship between mental health issues and socio-cultural settings may largely toll upon healthcare-seeking behavior. So, it urges to document the current status of mental healthcare-seeking behavior during the perinatal period among rural women in Bangladesh to develop a context-specific intervention in the future. METHODS: This study was carried out in one sub-district in Bangladesh from April 2017 to June 2018. We conducted 21 In-depth Interviews (IDIs) and seven Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with different groups of purposively selected participants. After collecting the recorded interview and making the verbatim transcription, the data were coded through Atlasti 5.7.a. Data were analyzed thematically to interpret the findings. RESULTS: Two-thirds of the total respondents did not seek mental healthcare during the perinatal period at the community level. They also did not know about the mental health service provider or the facility to get set these services. Only one respondent out of twenty-one sought maternal mental healthcare from a gynecologist from a private hospital. Socio-cultural factors such as social stigma, traditional beliefs and practices, social and religious taboos, and social capital negatively influence healthcare-seeking behaviors. Besides, the community-level service providers were not found to be adequately trained and did not have proper guidelines regarding its management. CONCLUSION: The findings provide evidence that there is an urgent need to increase the awareness for service users and formulate a guideline for the community-level service provider to manage maternal mental problems during the perinatal period of women in rural Bangladesh.

Firearm violence continues to be a national public health issue. The objective of this study was to collect baseline data regarding North Carolina County Commissioners' perceptions of firearm violence and potential local level interventions. A cross-sectional study of NC County Commissioners (n = 582) was conducted to investigate the research questions. The top 5 firearm violence prevention interventions that would be supported by NC County Commissioners included offering gun safety classes for adults (88.5%), implementing public education campaigns to promote responsible firearm storage (86.0%), developing courtroom processes that ensure domestic abusers turn in their guns as required by law (83.2%), adopting a standard policy of tracing all crime guns (79.4%), and providing firearm violence prevention programs for at-risk neighborhoods and individuals (72.2%). North Carolina County Commissioners perceived lack of understanding regarding which interventions would be most effective as the greatest barrier to supporting various types of firearm violence prevention interventions (50.3%).

COVID-19 has dramatically changed the lifestyle of people, especially in urban environments. This paper investigated the variations of built environments that were measurably associated with the spread of COVID-19 in 150 Wuhan communities. The incidence rate in each community before and after the lockdown (January 23, 2020), as respective dependent variables, represented the situation under normal circumstances and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI). After controlling the population density, floor area ratio (FAR), property age and sociodemographic factors, the built environmental factors in two spatial dimensions, the 15-minute walking life circle and the 10-minute cycling life circle, were brought into the Hierarchical Linear Regression Model and the Ridge Regression Model. The results indicated that before lockdown, the number of markets and schools were positively associated with the incidence rate, while community population density and FAR were negatively associated with COVID-19 transmission. After lockdown, FAR, GDP, the number of hospitals (in the 15-minute walking life circle) and the bus stations (in the 10-minute cycling life circle) became negatively correlated with the incidence rate, while markets remained positive. This study effectively extends the discussions on the association between the urban built environment and the spread of COVID-19. Meanwhile, given the limitations of sociodemographic data sources, the conclusions of this study should be interpreted and applied with caution.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all countries irrespective of their state of development. In countries with traditional societies, religious leaders have been acknowledged as key stakeholders in community engagement activities, including disease prevention. A community-level prevention model was established in 2020 by the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB), Sri Lanka, which incorporated mobilisation of the clergy to support the prevention and response schemes to COVID-19 with non-governmental stakeholders. This model was part of a more extensive community engagement network established by the HPB in cooperation with the country offices for WHO and UNICEF. Building trust, empowering behavioural traits applicable to minimise risks from COVID-19, leadership and coordination, message dissemination, addressing stigma and discrimination, supporting testing procedures, contact tracing activities and vaccination, building community resilience, spiritual and psychosocial support, and welfare provision are some of the useful factors that were identified in the model. Furthermore, a much broader and holistic approach is needed to focus on health behaviours and social and cultural aspects in a multi-faceted nature. This paper highlights a novel COVID-19 prevention model with active involvement of religious leaders that can be implemented in low resource settings. Our experience from Sri Lanka demonstrates the feasibility of implementing this model to mitigate the disastrous situation following the COVID-19 outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Microbial communities inhabiting the rhizosphere play pivotal roles in determining plant health and yield. Manipulation of the rhizosphere microbial community is a promising means to enhance the productivity of economically viable and important agricultural crops such as sunflower (Helianthus annuus). This study was designed to gain insights into the taxonomic and functional structures of sunflower rhizosphere and bulk soil microbiome at two different locations (Sheila and Itsoseng) in South Africa. RESULTS: Microbial DNA extracted from the sunflower rhizosphere and bulk soils was subjected to next-generation sequencing using 16S amplicon sequencing technique. Firmicutes, Actnobacteria and Proteobacteria predominated sunflower rhizosphere soils. Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus and Fibrobacteres were positively influenced by Na+ and clay content, while Actinobacteria, Thaumarchaeota, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Aquificae and Chloroflexi were positively influenced by soil resistivity (Res) and Mg2+. The community-level physiological profiling (CLPP) analysis showed that the microbial communities in SHR and ITR used the amino acids tryptophan and malic acid efficiently. The metabolisms of these carbon substrates may be due to the dominant nature of some of the organisms, such as Actinobacteria in the soils. CONCLUSION: The CLPP measurements of soil from sunflower rhizosphere were different from those of the bulk soil and the degree of the variations were based on the type of carbon substrates and the soil microbial composition. This study has shown the presence of certain taxa of rhizobacteria in sunflower rhizosphere which were positively influenced by Na+ and Mg2+, and taxa obtained from SHR and ITR were able to effectively utilized tryptophan and malic acid. Many unclassified microbial groups were also discovered and it is therefore recommended that efforts should further be made to isolate, characterize and identify these unclassified microbial species, as it might be plausible to discover new microbial candidates that can further be harnessed for biotechnological purpose.
