RESUMEN

Hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone nanobubble-coupled hydrodynamic cavitation have demonstrated effective algae control in laboratories, but their in-situ potential, especially impact on nutrient salt degradation and microbial communities remain unclear. This study applied two-stage nanobubble technology, combining hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone nanobubbles, in a 3300 m2 semi-enclosed area of Taihu Lake to address these gaps. Results show that the technology efficiently controls algae, reduces odors, improves anaerobic conditions, and lowers ammonia nitrogen. Over 20 days, chlorophyll-a concentration reduced by 77.46% and cyanobacterial phycocyanin by 89.47%. Additionally, the concentrations of 2-MIB, GSM, and DMTS fell below threshold values. Notably, the relative abundance of Cyanobacteria in sediment dropped from 8.53% in the control area to only 1.59% ∼ 3.65% in the experimental area. The technology also achieved a significant reduction in ammonia nitrogen, with removal efficiencies of 78.53% in the water column and 39.17% in sediments, though the removal of total phosphorus was limited. Furthermore, the two-stage nanobubble system enhanced the abundance of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms and genes in the water, while promoting nitrogen- and phosphorus-related microbial communities in sediments and inhibiting the cyanobacteria-associated genus Cyanobium PCC-6307. Thus, Two-stage nanobubble technology can be employed for in-situ algal control in aquatic ecosystems.

RESUMEN

In the present study, hybrid activation of sodium peroxydisulfate (PS) by hydrodynamic cavitation and ultraviolet radiation was investigated for Congo Red (CR) degradation. Experiments were conducted using the Box-Benken design on inlet pressure (2-6 bar), PS concentration (0-50 mg. L-1) and UV radiation power (0-32 W). According to the results, at the optimum point where the pressure, PS concentration and UV radiation power were equal to 4.5 bar, 30 mg. L-1 and 16 W respectively, 92.01% of decolorization was achieved. Among the investigated processes, HC/UV/PS was the best process with the rate constant and synergetic coefficient of 38.6 × 10-3 min-1 and 2.76, respectively. At the optimum conditions, increasing the pollutant concentration from 20 mg. L-1 to 80 mg. L-1 decrease degradation rate from 92.01 to 45.21. Presence of natural organic mater (NOM) in all concentrations inhibited the CR degradation. Quenching experiments revealed that in the HC/UV/PS hybrid AOP free radicals accounted for 63.4% of the CR degradation, while the contribution of sulfate (SRs) and hydroxyl radicals (HRs) was 53.1% and 46.9%, respectively.

RESUMEN

Effective and economical processes for the advanced treatment of coking wastewater were urgently needed to reduce the persistent organic pollutants of external drainage. In the present work, we investigated the degradation of organic pollutants in coking wastewater through IHC/FO (imping stream hydrodynamic cavitation (IHC) coupled with the Fenton oxidation (FO) process) and IHC alone for their feasibility in the advanced treatment of coking wastewater. To select the optimum parameters, attention was paid to the effects of main operation conditions including inlet fluid pressure, medium temperature, initial pH, reaction time, and initial Fe(II) and initial H2O2 concentrations. The results showed that the effects of conditions that need energy to be maintained (such as initial pH and inlet pressure) on the organic pollutant removal efficiency through IHC/FO were less pronounced than those through IHC alone. Moreover, the application of IHC/FO could remove more organic pollutants from coking wastewater than IHC even at an energy-efficient condition. For example, the highest COD removal efficiency of 12.5% was achieved in the IHC treatment at 0.4 MPa, pH 3, and 60 min for the reaction time. In the case of IHC/FO, the maximum COD removal of 33.2% was obtained at pH 7, 0.1 MPa, 12 mmol/L H2O2, and 3 mmol/L Fe2+ after reacting for 15 min. The ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) absorption spectra and gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis further revealed that the kinds and amounts of pollutants (especially those that had benzenes) remaining in water treated through IHC/FO were much fewer and smaller than in water treated through IHC alone. The better performances of IHC/FO than IHC alone were likely related to the more hydroxyl radicals produced through IHC/FO. Taken together, our findings indicate that IHC/FO has great application potential in the advanced treatment of coking wastewater.

RESUMEN

Certain food by-products, including not-good-for-sale apples and pomegranate peels, are rich in bioactive molecules that can be collected and reused in food formulations. Their extracts, rich in pectin and antioxidant compounds, were obtained using hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), a green, efficient, and scalable extraction technique. The extracts were chemically and physically characterized and used in gluten-free and vegan cookie formulations to replace part of the flour and sugar to study whether they can mimic the role of these ingredients. The amount of flour + sugar removed and replaced with extracts was 5% and 10% of the total. Physical (dimensions, color, hardness, moisture content, water activity), chemical (total phenolic content, DPPH radical-scavenging activity), and sensory characteristics of cookie samples were studied. Cookies supplemented with the apple extract were endowed with similar or better characteristics compared to control cookies: high spread ratio, similar color, and similar sensory characteristics. In contrast, the pomegranate peel extract enriched the cookies in antioxidant molecules but significantly changed their physical and sensory characteristics: high hardness value, different color, and a bitter and astringent taste. HC emerged as a feasible technique to enable the biofortification of consumer products at a real scale with extracts from agri-food by-products.

RESUMEN

Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) is thought weaken the allergenicity of beer gluten proteins. However, the mechanism of action has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, an HC device was used to treat wheat gliadin and two specific celiac-toxic peptides, P1 and P2. FT-IR, MFS, HPLC, and CD were used to monitor the structural characteristics of gliadin and the two peptides. HC reduced the abundance of the coeliac toxic peptides P1 and P2 in solution and the contents of secondary structure ß-turns and PPII, which are related to reduced allergen immunoreactivity. This meant that both the primary and secondary structures of P1 and P2 were affected by HC, leading to fewer allergic reactions. This study was focused on the impact of HC on the secondary structures of allergens produced from gluten raw materials, and it has positive implications for reducing product allergenicity. RESUMEN

Anaerobic digestion in wastewater treatment plants converts its unwanted end product - waste activated sludge into biogas. Even if the process is well established, pre-treatment of the sludge can further improve its efficiency. In this study, four treatment regimes for increasing methane production through prior sludge disintegration were investigated using lab-scale cavitation generator and real sludge samples. Three different cavitating (attached cavitation regime, developed cloud shedding cavitation regime and cavitation in a wake regime) and one non-cavitating regime at elevated static pressure were studied in detail for their effectiveness on physical and chemical properties of sludge samples. Volume-weighted mean diameter D[4,3] of sludge's particles decreased by up to 92%, specific surface area increased by up to 611%, while viscosity (at a shear rate of 3.0 s-1) increased by up to 39% in the non-cavitating and decreased by up to 24% in all three cavitating regimes. Chemical changes were more pronounced in cavitating regimes, where released soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) and increase of dissolved organic matter (DOM) compounds by up to 175% and 122% were achieved, respectively. Methane production increased in all four cases, with the highest increase of 70% corresponding to 312 mL CH4 g-1 COD. However, this treatment was not particularly efficient in terms of energy consumption. The best energy balance was found for the regime with a biochemical methane potencial increase of 43%.

RESUMEN

The 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) is an important chemical precursor that can affect human endocrine system and induce pathological symptoms. This research reports the degradation of 2,4-DCP using lab-scale hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) approach, which is considered a green and effective method. To promote the degradation efficiency, the zero-valent iron (Fe0) as the catalyst for sulfate radical (SO4•-) generation via activation of sulfite (SO32-) salts was simultaneously used. Degradation efficiency was favorable in acidic pH than the alkaline pH due to higher production of active radicals and was dependent on the dose of Fe0 and SO32-. Under optimal condition, degradation efficiency by Fe0/HC/sulfite (96.67 ± 2.90%) was considerably enhanced compared to HC alone (45.37 ± 2.26%). Quenching experiments suggested that SO4•-, •OH, 1O2, and O2•- radicals were involved in the degradation of 2,4-DCP by Fe0/HC/sulfite process, but the dominant role was related to •OH (70.09% contribution) and SO4•- (29.91% contribution) radicals. From the turbulence model, turbulent pressure at venturi throat decreased from -0.42 MPa to -2.02 MPa by increasing the inlet pressure from 1.0 to 4.0 bar and increase in pressure gradient has intensified bubble collapse due to higher turbulence tension.

RESUMEN

The popularity of microflow chemistry has skyrocketed in the last 20 years, more and more chemists are switching from macro-batch reactors to miniaturized flow devices. As a result, microfluidics is paving its way into the future by consolidating its position in organic chemistry not only as a trend but as a new, effective, and sustainable way of conducting chemistry, that clearly will continue to grow and evolve. This perspective highlights the most relevant examples of innovative enhancing technologies applied to microflow reactors aimed to improve and intensify chemical processes. The extensive applicability of microflow chemistry is further illustrated by briefly discussing examples of complex integrated microsystems and scale-up technologies, demonstrating ultimately that microflow chemistry has the potential to become the ideal technology for the future.

RESUMEN

Many azo dyes are consumed in the textile and dyeing industry, which makes the wastewater recalcitrant and toxic to the aquatic environment. Dye degradation by the combination of hydrodynamic cavitation and ozone (HC + O3) has caused extensive interest. The degradation mechanism of the hybrid system needs further investigation. This study investigated the degradation of acid red 73 (AR73) by HC + O3. Meanwhile, the degradation pathways and mechanisms were present. The optimal operation parameters were: inlet pressure of 0.15 MPa, O3 dosage of 45 mg/min, initial dye concentration of 10 mg/L, and initial pH at 7.5. As a result, the decolorization rate, removal of UV254 and NH3-N were 100%, 71.28%, and 87.36% in 30 min, respectively. Humic acid and most of the co-existing anions (HCO3-, SO42-, Cl-, PO43-, NO3-) played a positive role in the degradation of AR73, while NO2- restrained. The reactive species of singlet oxygen (1O2), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and super oxygen radicals (·O2-) showed synergism in the hybrid system, and the decolorization was attributed to the fracture of azo bonds by 1O2. Meanwhile, aromatic amines were generated and further degraded into small molecule compounds. The research certificated that the HC + O3 can be an effective technology for azo dye degradation.

RESUMEN

The emission standards for textile printing and dyeing wastewater are stricter due to serious environmental issues. A novel technology, hydrodynamic cavitation combined with ozone (HC + O3), has attracted wide attention in wastewater advanced treatment, whereas the contaminants removal mechanism and transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were rarely reported. This study investigated the removal efficiency and mechanism of HC + O3. The maximum removal rates of UV254, chrominance, CODCr, and TOC were 64.99%, 91.90%, 32.30%, and 36.67% in 60 min, respectively, at the inlet pressure of 0.15 MPa and O3 dosage of 6.25 mmol/L. The synergetic coefficient of HC + O3 was 2.77. The removal of contaminants was the synergy of 1O2, ·OH and ·O2-, and high molecular weight and strong aromaticity organic matters were degraded effectively. The main components in DOM were tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like, which were effectively removed after HC + O3. Meanwhile, most DOM had decreased to low apparent relative molecular weight (LARMW) compounds. Additionally, the HC + O3 effluent can reach the emission standard in 60 min for 8.07 USD/m3. It can be concluded that HC + O3 is an effective technology for the advanced treatment of industrial wastewater. This study will provide suggestions for the engineering application of HC + O3.

RESUMEN

A new approach of solvent-assisted cavitation process was proposed for degradation of organic pollutants. The process envisages the use of suitable solvent as an additive, (1-5% v/V), in the conventional cavitation process to enhance the pollutant removal efficiency. A proof of concept was provided for the removal of ammoniacal nitrogen with significantly improved efficiency using solvent-assisted hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) compared to conventional HC. The efficacy of the process was studied on a pilot plant scale (1 m3/h) and using vortex flow based vortex diode as a cavitating device. Degradation studies were carried out using a model pollutant, 4-aminophenol and four different solvents as additives, 1-octanol, cyclohexanol, 1-octane and toluene. Relatively polar solvents were found to increase the efficiency of the pollutant removal (>65%) and also increase the rates to an extent of more than 200%, compared to only HC. A very high removal of ammoniacal nitrogen, more than 90%, was obtained for solvents 1-octanol and cyclohexanol, indicating the importance of the selection of solvent. Per-pass degradation model showed 3 to 4 times increase in the per pass degradation for polar solvents compared to cavitation alone. The results confirm no role of conventional solvent extraction and no specific contamination of wastewater due to the use of solvent as an additive in the process. Further, the cost was 2-3 times lower as compared to the conventional HC. The interesting observations in the proposed process can fuel further research to provide possible improvements in existing methodologies of wastewater treatment, in general, and for removal of ammoniacal nitrogen, in particular.

RESUMEN

Printing ink wastewater (PIW) carries a heavy load of pollutants, the composition of which makes treatment difficult, especially when trying to minimize the pollution load. According to the latter, the present study aims to investigate PIW treatment with different various methods and to determine the maximum color, COD (chemical oxygen demand) and TSS (total suspended solids) removal. First, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was tested and the effect of hydrogen peroxide dosage (0-10 g L-1), and pH (3, 5, 8, 10) was examined concerning the removal of PIW initial COD concentrations 4000 and 8000 mg L-1. Removal was high (more than 81%) only at pH 5 in HC reactor. The second method involved treatment with separate pH fixation of the undiluted PIW (COD 17000 mg L-1, actual pH 8 ± 0.2). This treatment, maximized removals, reaching reduction of the initial values more than 91%, at pH 5. Finally, PIW was treated with a combination of the above methods, leading to 93-97% removals for 8000 mg L-1 PIW treatment and 97-99% for 17000 mg L-1 PIW respectively. Process cost calculations showed that the latter method is an effective and affordable treatment method for PIW streams, while toxicity tests of the treated PIW showed substantial toxicity reduction.

RESUMEN

Raw printing ink wastewater (PIW) was treated with various inorganic coagulants and organic flocculants (anionic and cationic polyacrylamides). These processes were also examined as post treatment step following hydrodynamic cavitation. Treatment effectiveness was assessed through color, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal. The addition of 4500 mg L-1 polyaluminum chloride coagulant in undiluted PIW (COD: 17000 mg L-1) resulted in 99% color removal, 96% COD and TSS removal, after settling for 2 h. The addition of 10 mg L-1 of anionic polyacrylamides in the sample reduced settling time to only 5 min, with concomitant 96-98% removal efficiency. The addition of a 4 min hydrodynamic cavitation pretreatment step reduced coagulant addition by 33%, for the treatment of undiluted PIW (with 10 mg L-1 anionic polyacrylamide), while removals were ranged between 96 and 98%. Economic analysis for the undiluted PIW showed that costs were reduced by ca. 20% with the hydrodynamic cavitation pretreatment step. Moreover, sludge characterization showed the presence of maghemite, aluminum chloride and potassium aluminum silicate. Finally, toxicity tests revealed a significant attenuation of the toxic potential of undiluted PIW, thus indicating the enhanced efficiency of the proposed combined process (hydrodynamic cavitation and coagulation/flocculation).

RESUMEN

Hydrodynamic cavitation has been a promising method and technology in wastewater treatment, while the principles based on the design of cavitational reactors to optimize cavitation yield and performance remains lacking. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a supplementation of experimental optimization, has become an essential tool for this issue, owing to the merits of low investment and operating costs. Nevertheless, researchers with a non-engineering background or few CFD fundamentals used straightforward numerical strategies to treat cavitating flows, and this might result in many misinterpretations and consequently poor computations. This review paper presents the rationale behind hydrodynamic cavitation and application of cavitation modeling specific to the reactors in wastewater treatment. In particular, the mathematical models of multiphase flow simulation, including turbulence closures and cavitation models, are comprehensively described, whilst the advantages and shortcomings of each model are also identified and discussed. Examples and methods of the coupling of CFD technology, with experimental observations to investigate into the hydrodynamic behavior of cavitating devices that feature linear and swirling flows, are also critically summarized. Modeling issues, which remain unaddressed, i.e., the implementation strategies of numerical models, and the definition of cavitation numbers are identified and discussed. Finally, the advantages of CFD modeling are discussed and the future of CFD applications in this research area is also outlined. It is expected that the present paper would provide decision-making support for CFD beginners to efficiently perform CFD modeling and promote the advancement of cavitation simulation of reactors in the field of wastewater treatment.

RESUMEN

DRIFT, HPLC-MS, and SPME-GC/MS analyses were used to unveil the structure and the main functional compounds of red (blood) orange (Citrus sinensis) and bitter orange (Citrus aurantium). The IntegroPectin samples show evidence that these new citrus pectins are comprised of pectin rich in RG-I hairy regions functionalized with citrus biophenols, chiefly flavonoids and volatile molecules, mostly terpenes. Remarkably, IntegroPectin from the peel of fresh bitter oranges is the first high methoxyl citrus pectin extracted via hydrodynamic cavitation, whereas the red orange IntegroPectin is a low methoxyl pectin. C. aurantium IntegroPectin has a uniquely high concentration of adsorbed flavonoids, especially the flavanone glycosides hesperidin, naringin, and eriocitrin.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The interest of consumers and market and scientific research for added-value foods obtained with environmentally sustainable productive chains is increasing. Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) needles (SFNs), often by-products of forest management and logging, represent an unexploited source of bioactive compounds. RESULTS: For the first time, SFN aqueous extract obtained through controlled hydrodynamic cavitation was used to enrich whole wheat flour bread. The first trial found that 35% SFNs extract addition was the absolute threshold of taste perception. The second trial investigated dough rheological properties and bread technological and antioxidant properties in samples enriched with 35% and 100% SFNs extract compared with the control (0% SFNs extract). SFNs extract significantly increased bread antioxidant capacity in both 35% and 100% SFN fresh breads by ~42.5% and ~87% respectively and in 100% SFNs bread samples after 72 h of storage by ~76%. Enrichment of 35% showed higher alveograph dough extensibility (~11%) and different bread texture in terms of hardness, springiness, and chewiness. Enrichment with 100% SFNs extract significantly improved dough and bread technological quality: it increased alveograph dough extensibility L (~18%), swelling index G (~8%), and flour strength W (~14%) and showed the highest increase in bread specific volume (~0.200 L kg-1 ). CONCLUSIONS: SFNs aqueous extract produced with controlled hydrodynamic cavitation appeared a valuable technical material for the manufacturing of added-value and functional breads. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

The research on the potential of cavitation exploitation is currently an extremely interesting topic. To reduce the costs and time of the cavitation reactor optimization, nowadays, experimental optimization is supplemented and even replaced using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). One of the approaches towards sustainable water treatment is the use of the cavitation reactor with bluff elements mounted on its stator and rotor. The experimental results show that, besides the rotational speed, the spacing of the rotor pins has the most significant effect on the cavitation intensity and effectiveness, while the pin diameter and the surface roughness are less significant design parameters. The present paper uses a simplified CFD approach to investigate the conditions in the reactor and to select the optimal among a number of geometry variations.

RESUMEN

Pectin is a valuable biopolymer used as a natural, clean label additive for thickening and gelling. However, industry faces issues with dispersibility and stability of pectin formulations. To address these issues, the effect of short processing time (30-180 s) with hydrodynamic (HC) and acoustic cavitation (AC) on the dispersibility and gelling functionality of mandarin pectin-rich polysaccharide (M-PRP) was investigated. Short-time processing with HC and AC did not affect polymer composition. HC, but not AC, decreased polydispersity index (PDI) from 0.78 to 0.68 compared to the control. Electron and atomic force microscopy showed that HC and AC decreased aggregation of fibrous and matrix polymers. Both treatments increased apparent viscosity significantly from 0.059 Pa s to 0.30 Pa s at 10 -s. The pectin dispersions showed good gelling capacity upon addition of calcium (final conc. 35 mM). HC and AC treatments for 150 s led to gels that were 7 and 4 times stronger (as measured by peak force) than the control with more homogeneous, less porous structures. In conclusion, short-time HC and AC can improve the dispersibility and functionality of citrus pectin without affecting composition, and are promising technologies to facilitate the use of pectin in industry applications.

RESUMEN

A scalable manufacturing method for the production of biocompatible fewlayered graphene nanosheets is developed using hydrodynamic cavitation. Scalable exfoliation is induced by employing hydrodynamic cavitation and a serum albumin protein. Unlike acoustic cavitation, the primary means of bubble collapse in hydrodynamic cavitation is caused laterally, thereby separating two adjacent flakes through a shear effect. In this process, bovine serum albumin, a known protein, was employed to act as an effective exfoliation agent and provide desired stability by preventing restacking of the graphene layers. This method was used to study the effect of time of graphene exfoliation in a novel hydrodynamic cavitation system. The fabricated products were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that with increasing the time of exfoliation, the number of graphene layers decreased based on theI2D/IGratio but disorder increased based on theID/IGratio. At 3 h, theI2D/IGratio was at 0.39 and theID/IGratio was 0.25, while at 6 h theI2D/IGratio was 0.35 andID/IGratio was 0.29. The results of the theoretical and computational analysis this research outlines are needed to obtain an effective cavitation model that can be used to potentially improve graphene synthesis and quality. The captured images of bubble propagation in the solution imply that this fluidic phenomenon could assist the graphene exfoliation. To prove this, a simple cavitation model using a needle valve was designed. The needle valve cavitation setup was able to identify that cavitation assists in graphene exfoliation and this was proved using the graphene characterization data. Based on these findings, the simulation models were designed in ANSYS and COMSOL. Specifically, through the ANSYS simulation, we were able to calculate cavitation numbers for specific flow rates and fluid temperatures.

RESUMEN

Tested in vitro on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, grapefruit IntegroPectin is a powerful protective, antioxidant and antiproliferative agent. The strong antioxidant properties of this new citrus pectin, and its ability to preserve mitochondrial membrane potential and morphology, severely impaired in neurodegenerative disorders, make it an attractive therapeutic and preventive agent for the treatment of oxidative stress-associated brain disorders. Similarly, the ability of this pectic polymer rich in RG-I regions, as well as in naringin, linalool, linalool oxide and limonene adsorbed at the outer surface, to inhibit cell proliferation or even kill, at high doses, neoplastic cells may have opened up new therapeutic strategies in cancer research. In order to take full advantage of its vast therapeutic and preventive potential, detailed studies of the molecular mechanism involved in the antiproliferative and neuroprotective of this IntegroPectin are urgently needed.
