RESUMEN

This paper provides a summary of 25 years of research on Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) in the western Ligurian Sea. Seasonal variations in abundance, distribution and habitat use were observed. Photographic mark-recapture methods provided a population size estimate for the period from 1998 to 2012, of about 100 individuals (95% CI of 60-220 individuals). The same methods detected a decline in population size from an average of about 120-150 from 2000 to 2005, to an average of 70-100 during 2010 to 2014. Species occurrence appeared to be significantly decreasing in coastal and continental slope areas, while it seemed to be stable in the most pelagic area. In addition, a dramatic change was observed in the local primary production, which was analysed based on time series of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll data from 1990 to 2014. Based on fisheries landings, there may have been a general decrease in fishery productivity, both in the western Ligurian Sea and in adjacent regions. Environmental variability, depletion of resources by fisheries and possibly interspecies competition may all have contributed to cause changes in Risso's dolphin habitat use and occurrence in the western Ligurian Sea.

Mycobacterium spp. and Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida are recognized as the most frequent causative agents of granulomatous lesions in fish. Although frequent episodes of mycobacterial infections have been reported in wild fish worldwide, only sporadic cases have been documented to date in Italy. To investigate for the presence of lesions referable to mycobacteriosis and to identify the mycobacterial species involved, a total of 159 wild mullets were fished from the eastern coast of the Ligurian Sea, killed and necropsied. Liver and spleen samples were collected from all fish for histopathological and microbiological analyses. Molecular investigations for identification of Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida were performed. Gross examination revealed granulomatous lesions in one animal; microscopically, 42.14% of fish displayed granulomas with various histological features, 19.50% resulted positive at Ziehl-Neelsen staining, and were confirmed as mycobacterial lesions by culture. The identified colonies were characterized as M. fortuitum, M. abscessus, M. flavescens, M. chelonae, M. septicum and M. nonchromogenicum. In all, 35% of animals resulted positive for Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida. These data suggest widespread mycobacterial infection also by Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida infections in wild fish. Moreover, the pathogenicity of some mycobacterial species, previously considered as saprophytic, was demonstrated.

Over the past thirty years, the red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata in the Mediterranean Sea has faced increasing threats, including heat waves and human activities such as artisanal and recreational fishing. Epibiosis on damaged gorgonian colonies is generally used as an indirect indication of stressed conditions. The density and height of P. clavata and the percentage of colonies affected by epibiosis and entangled in lost fishing gear were monitored to investigate the phenomenon and its trend over time in the Ligurian Sea. Analyses were based on transects collected during ROV campaigns between 2015 and 2022 at depths of 33-90 m. A strong correlation was observed between fishing efforts in the study area and the level of epibiosis. Maximal percentages of colonies affected by epibiosis and entanglement were recorded at depths of 50-70 m. Temporally, marine heat waves before 2019 were identified as the primary cause of damage to P. clavata. The decrease in epibiosis percentages after 2019, despite the 2022 heat wave, may be due to a quick recovery ability of the populations and a reduction in fishing activities during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Long-term monitoring programmes are essential to understand the changes in marine benthic communities exposed to different stressors.

We report the first record of a stranded specimen of Cymbuliaparvidentata, a pteropod species of Atlantic origin, in the Ligurian Sea. On 27 February 2022, six C.peronii and one C.parvidentata were collected on Borgio-Verezzi Beach (Savona, Italy - 44.16° N, 8.304633° W). Specimens were examined morphologically and biometrically. Measurements (length, width, height and wet weight) separated the two taxa, C.peronii being larger than C.parvidentata. The finding of C.parvidentata, which has only occasionally been reported in southern Italy, is remarkable and may be due to ascending Atlantic water (AW) pulses that reach the Ligurian Sea. This finding adds to the previous knowledge of other pelagic species of Atlantic origin that were found in the Ligurian Sea, suggesting the possibility of major on-going changes and a general "Atlantification". In order to determine the frequency of such events, it will be highly desirable to design specific citizen-science campaigns.

The Port of Genoa (north-western Mediterranean Sea) receives sediments from two different catchment areas (Bisagno and Polcevera torrents). The aim of the work is to evaluate if Rare Earth Elements (REEs) could be used to identify the two sedimentary inputs and to unravel the origin of inorganic contaminants in an anthropised basin. REE results constitute a baseline for this port. The main REE-bearing minerals are phosphates and zircon. As, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Sn concentrate in the sediments closer to the Bisagno Torrent mouth, and the correlation with Ca and Light-REEs suggests their plausible geological origin. Co, Mn, and Ni maxima lie in the sediments closer to the Polcevera Torrent. Their correlation with Middle-REEs and Mg suggest that ophiolitic rocks could explain their presence. Cr, Cu, V, and Zn do not show a clear correlation with REEs, and their origin probably is a combination of natural and anthropogenic sources.

Litter has become a common component of marine ecosystems, and its assessment and monitoring are now of primary interest. Here, we characterized seafloor litter in the mesophotic depth range of the Ligurian Sea, one of the most urbanized basins of the Mediterranean Sea. Eighty sites (30-220 m depth) were investigated by by means of ROV video transects. Data regarding environmental parameters and anthropic pressures were used to explain the distribution of human-derived objects. Litter resulted widely distributed in all the investigated areas, with maximum densities of 7900 items ha-1. It was mainly represented by abandoned fishing gears, with highest abundances found on the deep coastal rocky shoals exploited by artisanal and recreational fishermen. Urban litter, primarily represented by plastics, was generally higher close to shore, especially near river mouths and large harbors. Litter densities reported here are among the highest ever recorded in Europe, denoting the urgency for specific actions to prevent further spreading.

Areas like the Mediterranean coastlines, which have high population density, represent locations of high pollution risk for surrounding environments. Thus, this study aims to compare data on the abundance, size, and composition of buoyant plastic particles collected during two weeks in 2019 in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas with data from 2018. The results from 2019 show average meso- and microplastic particle concentrations of 255,865 ± 841,221 particles km-2, or 394.19 ± 760.87 g km-2; values which differ significantly from those reported in 2018. Microplastic particles accounted for 88.7% of the sample; the majority of which had a size range being between 1 and 2.5 mm. These data are an important milestone for long-term monitoring of the highly variable plastic pollution levels within this region; showing overlaps in zones of pollutant accumulation in addition to increased overall concentrations of plastic particles compared to previous data.

Seawater passive sampling with Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) combined with Gaschromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis were employed as a tool for screening unknown contaminants in a complex Ligurian marine coastal area. The untargeted approach allowed recognizing different classes of compounds, mainly hydrocarbons from C20 to C30. Besides, two chemicals, deriving from anthropic activities, N-butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS) and diphenyl sulfone (DPS), were identified and quantified in all samples. Both analytes showed decreasing concentrations from the more confined site to the outer one. The oceanographic characterization of the area performed with multiparametric probes provided useful information, in agreement with chemical analyses. The presence of NBBS and DPS in the site presenting lower continental inputs demonstrated the usefulness of the integrative sampling approach for temporal and spatial monitoring, especially for low level and/or short-term pollution events that traditional monitoring can fail to detect.

The organic allochthonous material input in the benthic system of a NW Mediterranean shelf area was studied using a three-pronged approach, focusing firstly on the evaluation of the sedimentary stable isotope ratios and organic matter (OM) composition, then on the OM recycling processes performed by the microbial organisms, and finally on the potential trophic relationships between the macrobenthic organisms. The highest allochthonous signal, indicating continental input, was observed within the 50-m isobath, while at the 80-m isobath the marine signal was higher, pointing to a rather low continental influence approximately 5 km from the shore. Heavier rainfall, often generating abrupt allochthonous inputs by river outfalls, led to a wider spread of fine sediment particles. Carbohydrates were the compounds that best represented the continental input and these compounds were associated with potential recycling activities by microbiota, pointing to the entry of these C-containing allochthonous materials into the microbial food web. The macrofaunal deposit-feeders used sedimentary OM characterised by a continental signature as a food source, although the isotopic ratios of the organisms also pointed to selective feeding on materials that had a marine signature, especially at our offshore sampling stations. Predators fed on deposit- or suspension-feeders, with a potential selection of the latter during the highest inputs of continental materials occurring in winter.

Engraulis encrasicolus and Sardina pilchardus are pelagic fishes of notable economic and gastronomic importance in the northwest Mediterranean (Ligurian Sea, Italy). The consumption of thermally unprocessed or lightly processed, marinated or salted anchovies and sardines presents a potential risk to acquire anisakiasis, a fish-borne parasitic disease in humans. Prevalence and abundance of Anisakis larvae in Engraulis encrasicolus and Sardina pilchardus from the Monterosso fishing grounds (Cinque Terre National Park, Ligurian Sea, Italy) were assessed, and the larvae were identified by morphological and PCR-RFLP methods. Anisakis larvae, all belonging to Anisakis pegreffii spp. were found in the visceral mass of 1050 anchovies (0.8% overall prevalence), whereas no Anisakis larvae were found in the 750 sardines examined. According to these data, the risk of acquiring anisakiasis from the consumption of raw or undercooked anchovies and sardines caught in the fishing area we investigated is very low.

Temperate reefs, built by multilayers of encrusting algae accumulated during hundreds to thousands of years, represent one of the most important habitats of the Mediterranean Sea. These bioconstructions are known as "coralligenous" and their spatial complexity allows the formation of heterogeneous microhabitats offering opportunities for a large number of small cryptic species hardly ever considered. Although sponges are the dominant animal taxon in the coralligenous rims with both insinuating and perforating species, this group is until now poorly known. Aim of this work is to develop a reference baseline about the taxonomic knowledge of sponges and, considering their high level of phenotypic plasticity, evaluate the importance of coralligenous accretions as a pocket for biodiversity conservation. Collecting samples in four sites along the coast of the Ligurian Sea, we recorded 133 sponge taxa (115 of them identified at species level and 18 at genus level). One species, Eurypon gracilis is new for science; three species, Paratimea oxeata, Clathria (Microciona) haplotoxa and Eurypon denisae are new records for the Italian sponge fauna, eleven species are new findings for the Ligurian Sea. Moreover, seventeen species have not been recorded before from the coralligenous community. The obtained data, together with an extensive review of the existing literature, increase to 273 the number of sponge species associated with the coralligenous concretions and confirm that this habitat is an extraordinary reservoir of biodiversity still largely unexplored, not only taxonomically, but also as to peculiar adaptations and life histories.

This study aims to investigate the occurrence of Anisakidae larvae (genera Anisakis and Hysterothylacium) in fishes and squids used for human nutrition and increase the knowledge of the distribution of Anisakidae larvae in this area of Mediterranean Sea. Distribution and correct identification of Anisakidae larvae in fish species is important for the assessment of their relative epidemiological role; especially when the fishes are of high commercial value and largely used in human nutrition. The study investigated the occurrence of Anisakidae larvae (genera Anisakis and Hysterothylacium) in 195 fishes owing to 22 different species and 60 squids (Illex coindetii) sampled in northern Ligurian Sea. A combination of morphological and PCR-RFLP methods have been used. A total of 177 anisakid larvae were isolated in 42/195 (21.5%) fish of 11 species and only one larva in one squid. These larvae were identified morphologically as belonging to the genera Anisakis (36/177) or Hysterothylacium (142/177). All Anisakis larvae were isolated from Trachurus trachurus and were identified at species level by PCR-RFLP as belonging to Anisakis pegreffii. Hysterothylacium sp. in short, larvae presence occurred in most of examined fish species with a higher density in Mullus barbatus (mean intensity 5.6 larvae) and Serranus scriba (MI 5.3).

Making nature's value visible to humans is a key issue for the XXI century and it is crucial to identify and measure natural capital to incorporate benefits or costs of changes in ecosystem services into policy. Emergy analysis, a method able to analyze the overall functioning of a system, was applied to reckon the value of main ecosystem services provided by Posidonia oceanica, a fragile and precious Mediterranean seagrass ecosystem. Estimates, based on calculation of resources employed by nature, resulted in a value of 172 € m(-2)a(-1). Sediment retained by meadow is most relevant input, composing almost the whole P. oceanica value. Remarks about economic losses arising from meadow regression have been made through a time-comparison of meadow maps. Suggested procedure represents an operative tool to provide a synthetic monetary measure of ecosystem services to be employed when comparing natural capital to human and financial capitals in a substitutability perspective.
