RESUMEN

Chronobiology is the study of biological rhythms. Chronomics investigates interactions with environmental cycles in a genetically coded autoresonance of the biosphere with wrangling space and terrestrial weather. Analytical global and local methods applied to human blood pressure records of around-the-clock measurements covering decades detect physiological-physical interactions, a small yet measurable response to solar and terrestrial magnetism. The chronobiological and chronomic interpretation of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (C-ABPM) records in the light of time-specified reference values derived from healthy peers matched by sex and age identify vascular variability anomalies (VVAs) for an assessment of cardio-, cerebro-, and renovascular disease risk. Even within the conventionally accepted normal range, VVAs have been associated with a statistically significant increase in risk. Long-term C-ABPM records help to "know ourselves," serving for relief of psychological and other strain once transient VVAs are linked to the source of a load, prompting adjustment of one's lifestyle for strain reduction. Persistent circadian VVAs can be treated, sometimes by no more than a change in timing of the daily administration of antihypertensive medication. Circadian VVA assessment is an emergency worldwide, prompted in the United States by 1,000 deaths per day every day from problems related to blood pressure. While some heads of state met under United Nation and World Health Organization sponsorship to declare that noncommunicable diseases are a slow-motion disaster, a resolution has been drafted to propose C-ABPM as an added tool complementing purely physical environmental monitoring to contribute also to the understanding of social and natural as well as personal cataclysms.

BACKGROUND: In middle- and high-income countries, obesity is positively associated with neighbourhood deprivation. However, the moderating effect of the broader urban residential context on this relationship remains poorly understood. METHODS: In this study, we have examined the nonlinear and geographically varying relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and the likelihood of being a person with overweight among participants of the French NutriNet-Santé adult cohort study (n = 68,698), adjusted for age, gender and educational level. Ten urban residential contexts (e.g., suburbs, peri-urban or rural areas) were defined. We used a multilevel generalised additive modelling framework for analyses. RESULTS: We found that the relationship between neighbourhood deprivation and overweight differed according to urban context, in terms of both linearity and intensity. Overall, the deprivation-overweight relationship was strongly positive (with a higher prevalence of overweight in deprived neighbourhoods) in suburban areas of Paris and of other large French cities, while weak or null in small towns and rural areas, and intermediate in inner cities. In addition, we observed in suburbs of Paris and in peri-urban belts of large cities that beyond a certain level of neighbourhood deprivation, the relationship with overweight plateaued. DISCUSSION: In a French population from a high-income country, suburbs, as well as moderately deprived neighbourhoods of peri-urban areas of large cities, are potential targets for public health and urban planning policies aiming at preventing obesity. Our results emphasize the value of local analyses to better capture the complexity and contextual variations of socioeconomic determinants of non-communicable diseases such as obesity.

Conditioned reinforcer effects may be due to the stimulus' discriminative rather than its strengthening properties. While this was demonstrated in a frequently-changing choice procedure, a single attempt to replicate in a relatively static choice environment failed. We contend that this was because the information provided by the stimuli was nonredundant in the frequently-changing preparation, and redundant in the steady-state arrangement. In the present experiments, 6 pigeons worked in a steady-state concurrent schedule procedure with nonredundant informative stimuli (red keylight illuminations). When a response-contingent red keylight signaled that the next food delivery was more likely on one of the two alternatives, postkeylight choice responding was reliably for that alternative. This effect was enhanced after a history of extended informative red keylight presentation (Experiment 2). These results lend support to recent characterizations of conditioned reinforcer effects as reflective of a discriminative, rather than a reinforcing, property of the stimulus.
